▼ This dissertation is concerned with performance analysis of diversity combining schemes in frequency-hop spread spectrum communications under the worst case partial-band noise and multitone jamming. Performance of a ratio-threshold diversity combining scheme in fast frequency hop spread spectrum systems with M-ary frequency shift keying modulation (FFH/MFSK ) under partial-band noise (PBN) and band multitone jamming without and with the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is analyzed. The analysis is based on exact bit error probabilities, instead of bounds on the bit error probabilities. A method to compute the bit error probability for ratio-threshold combining on jamming channel is developed. Relationship between the system performance and the system parameters, such as ratio-threshold, diversity order, and thermal noise level, is illustrated. The performances under band multitone jamming and under partial-band noise jamming are compared. For binary FSK modulation, the performance under the two types of jamming is almost the same, but for 8-ary FSK modulation, tone jamming is more effective against communications. The structure of the combiner is very simple and easy to implement. Another merit of this combiner is that its output can be directly fed to a soft-decision FEC decoder. Maximum-likelihood diversity combining for an FFH/MFSK spread spectrum system on a PBN interference channel is investigated. The structure of maximum likelihood diversity reception on a PBN channel with AWGN is derived. It is shown that signal-to-noise ratio and the noise variance at each hop have to be known to implement this optimum diversity combining. Several sub-optimum diversity combining schemes, which require the information on noise variance of each hop to operate, are also considered. The performance of the maximum-likelihood combining can be used as a standard in judging the performance of other suboptimum, but more practical diversity combining schemes. The performance of the optimum combining scheme is evaluated by simulations. It is shown that the Adaptive Gain Control (AGC) diversity combining actually achieves the optimum performance when interference is not very weak. But the performance difference between some of the known diversity combining schemes, which do not require channel information to operate, and the optimum scheme is not small when the diversity order is low. An error-correction scheme is proposed for an M-ary symmetric channel characterized by a large error probability Pe. Performance of the scheme is analyzed. The value of Pe can be close to, but smaller than, 1 – 1/M for which the channel capacity is zero. Such a large Pe may occur, for example, in a jamming environment. The coding scheme considered consists of an outer convolutional code and an inner repetition code of length m which is used for each convolutional code symbol. ▼ Cognitive radio (CR) has been considered as an innovative and powerful technology to solve the spectrum under-utilization problem in conventional wireless networks. Instead of fixed spectrum allocation, CR allows cognitive users to dynamically and intelligently share the radio spectrum with licensed users. Unfortunately, cognitive radio networks (CRNs) impose unique challenges due to the co-existence of various primary networks, of which the Quality of Service (QoS) should be protected. Most of the existing research on CR has mainly focused on detecting and utilizing unused portions of the spectrum (i.e., spectrum holes) in the frequency-time domains. However, spatial dimension spectrum reuse has not been carefully investigated. By exploiting location information, cognitive users have the potential to estimate the spectrum holes more precisely and optimize their power control, spectrum access and routing strategies so as to improve spectrum efficiency. Due to the high fluctuation and heterogeneity of the available spectrum occupied by licensed users, there are great challenges to develop location-aware dynamic spectrum sharing techniques, not only in the physical layer but also across the whole layers of the remaining protocol stack. In this thesis, we investigate various location-aware design approaches, including location-aware spectrum management, location-aware network optimization and location-aware routing protocols, to exploit multi-user, multi-frequency, and multi-hop selection diversity. We start with investigating the spectrum access for underlay CRNs. The transmit power is regulated to identify the spatial spectrum holes. To take advantage of the distributed spectrum holes, a short-path routing strategy is developed for multihop CRNs. Such a strategy navigates the transmitting packet from the source to the destination by following a designed guide strip, while avoiding harmful interference to the primary users. Next, a joint power control, spectrum allocation and relay selection scheme is considered for multiuser CRNs, which further improves the spectrum and power efficiency by coordinating the spectrum holes on multiple frequency bands. To fairly allocate the spectrum, we then design a novel semi-matching spectrum sharing framework with the objective of maximizing the minimum throughput among the cognitive users. With graph theoretic tools, efficient and effective algorithms are proposed based on knowledge of the location information. By numerical results, these designed algorithms are demonstrated to enhance the cognitive users' QoS, as well as to improve the spectrum efficiency and fairness.

▼ Cognitive radio (CR) and mobile networks have been a hot topic for extensive study in recent years. Since the spectrum allocation and access are both dynamic, new challenges are introduced into the spectrum management and the applications. In this thesis, for the spectrum assignment problem, we proposed aggregation-aware spectrum assignment (AASA), a spectrum assignment algorithm in cognitive ad-hoc networks. AASA utilizes the small spectrum fragments that cannot be utilized by contiguous spectrum assignment algorithms. To obtain quantitative understanding of current spectrum utilization, we carried out a set of spectrum measurements in the 20MHz to 3GHz spectrum band at 4 locations concurrently in Guangdong province of China, and using these data sets we conducted a set of detailed analysis of the first and second order statistics of the collected data. Moreover, we also utilized such spectrum correlation to develop a 2-dimensional frequent pattern mining algorithm that can accurately predict channel availability based on past observations. For the multi-user multi-channel coordination issue, we present a new coordination approach subcarrier coding (SC), which was designed to enable the receiver obtain the coordination messages via simple energy detection. At last, for the application, we first propose deStress, the mobile and remote stress monitoring, alleviation and management system to quantitatively assesses the user’s stress level in a continuous range. deStress provides a system for stress monitoring and management, and a novel adaptive respiration-based bio-feedback approach to alleviate stress. Then we design and implement RASS, a portable real-time automatic sleep scoring system to accurately scores the sleeping state and detects sleep apnea in real-time based on the sensing results of pulse, blood oxygen, activity, sound and light signals. The above studies demonstrate that this thesis solves several key challenges of spectrum management and application in wireless and mobile networks.

▼ Time-Frequency Distributions (TFDs) are accounted to be one of the powerful tools for analysis of time-varying signals. Although a variety of TFDs have been proposed, most of their designs were targeted towards obtaining good visualization and limited work is available for characterization applications.In this work, the characteristics of the ambiguity domain (AD) is suitably exploited to obtain a novel automated analysis scheme that preserves the inherent TF connection during Non-Stationary (NS) signal processing. Following this, an energy-based discriminative set of feature vectors for facilitating efficient characterization of the given time-varying input has been proposed. This scheme is motivated by the fact that, although, the interfering (or cross-) terms plague the representation, they carry important signal interaction information, which could be investigated for usability for time-varying signal analysis.Once having assessed the suitability of this domain for NS signal analysis, a new formulation for obtaining AD transformation is introduced. The number theory concepts, specifically the even-ordered Ramanujan Sums (RS) are used to obtain the proposed transform function. A detailed investigation and comparison to the classical approach, on this novel class of functions reveals the many benefits of the RS-modified AD functions: inherent sparsity in representation, dimensionality reduction, and robustness to noise.The next contribution in this work, is the proposal of kernel modifications in AD for obtaining high resolution (and good time localization) distribution. This is motivated by the existing trade-off between TF resolution and interfering term reduction in TF distributions. Here, certain variants of TF kernels are proposed in the AD. In addition, kernels that are derived from the concept of learning machines are introduced for discriminative characterization of NS signals.Following this, two novel AD-based schemes for neurological disorder discrimination using gait and pathological speech detection are introduced. The performance evaluation of these AD-based schemes, using a linear classifier, resulted in a maximum overall classification accuracy of 93.1% and 97.5% for gait and pathological speech applications respectively. The accuracies were obtained after a rigorous leave-one-out technique validation strategy.These results further confirm the potential of the proposed schemes for efficient information extraction for real-life signals. ▼ A simple dynamic model is used with various observations to provide an approximate spectral description of low frequency oceanic variability. Such a spectrum has wide application in oceanography, including the optimal design of observational strategy for the deployment of floats, the study of Lagrangian statistics and the estimate of uncertainty for heat content and mass flux. Analytic formulas for the frequency and wavenumber spectra of any physical variable, and for the cross spectra between any two different variables for each vertical mode of the simple dynamic model are derived. No heat transport exists in the model. No momentum flux exists either if the energy distribution is isotropic. It is found that all model spectra are related to each other through the frequency and wavenumber spectrum of the stream-function for each mode, Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ), where (k, I) represent horizontal wavenumbers, W stands for frequency, n is vertical mode number, and (φ,λ) are latitude and longitude, respectively. Given Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ), any model spectrum can be estimated. In this study, an inverse problem is faced: Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ) is unknown; however, some observational spectra are available. I want to estimate Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ) if it exists. Estimated spectra of the low frequency variability are derived from various measurements: (i) The vertical structure of and kinetic energy and potential energy is inferred from current meter and temperature mooring measurements, respectively. (ii) Satellite altimetry measurements produce the geographic distributions of surface kinetic energy magnitude and the frequency and wavenumber spectra of sea surface height. (iii) XBT measurements yield the temperature wavenumber spectra and their depth dependence. (v) Current meter and temperature mooring measurements provide the frequency spectra of horizontal velocities and temperature. It is found that a simple form for Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ) does exist and an analytical formula for a geographically varying Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ) is constructed. Only the energy magnitude depends on location. The wavenumber spectral shape, frequency spectral shape and vertical mode structure are universal. This study shows that motion within the large-scale low-frequency spectral band is primarily governed by quasigeostrophic dynamics and all observations can be simplified as a certain function of Φ(k, I, w, n, φ, λ). The low frequency variability is a broad-band process and Rossby waves are particular parts of it. Although they are an incomplete description of oceanic variability in the North Pacific, real oceanic motions with energy levels varying from about 10-40% of the total in each frequency band are indistinguishable from the simplest theoretical Rossby wave description. At higher latitudes, as the linear waves slow, they disappear altogether. Non-equatorial latitudes display some energy with frequencies too high for consistency with linear theory; this energy produces a positive bias if a lumped average westward…

▼ Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have been proposed in recent years to solve the spectrum scarcity problem by exploiting the existence of spectrum holes. This thesis studies two problems in CRNs, the cooperative spectrum sensing scheduling problem and the joint spectrum allocation and relay selection problem in CRNs. The first problem is how to optimally schedule cooperative spectrum sensing in CRNs. In CRNs, secondary users can be coordinated to perform spectrum sensing so that primary user activities can be detected more accurately. However, in a dynamic spectrum environment, more sensing cooperation may induce every secondary user to sense more channels and thus decreasing their transmission times. In Chapter 2, we study this tradeoff by using the theory of partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). This formulation leads to an optimal sensing scheduling policy that determines which secondary users sense which channels with what miss detection probability and false alarm probability. A myopic policy with lower complexity yet comparable performance is also proposed. Numerical and simulation results are provided to illustrate that our design can utilize the spectrum more efficiently for cognitive radio users. The second problem is the joint spectrum allocation and relay selection problem in CRNs. One of the important issues in a cellular CRN is how to efficiently allocate primary user (PU) spectrums without causing harmful interference to PUs. In Chapter 3, we present a cross-layer framework which jointly considers spectrum allocation and relay selection with the objective of maximizing the minimum traffic demand of secondary users that can be supported in a cellular CRN. Specifically, we consider (1) CRN tries to utilize PU spectrums even when the CRN cell is not outside the protection region of the PU cell, and (2) cooperative relay is used in cellular CRNs to improve the utilization of PU spectrums. We formulate this cross-layer design problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and use LINGO to obtain the optimal solution. Compared with a conventional channel allocation scheme, the numerical results show a significant improvement by using our scheme.

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to investigate potential links between trunk stiffness, vibration transmission and whole-body vibration (WBV) injuries. The investigation was comprised of field and laboratory studies. Tri-planar trunk postures, operator injury histories and 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) vibration exposure data were collected from eight forestry skidders during normal field operations in Northern Ontario. Using this skidder posture and vibration exposure data, the laboratory investigation examined interactions between WBV exposure levels and spectra, seated trunk postures, trunk muscle activity, and trunk stiffness on the transmission of 6-DOF vibration from the seat to several levels of the spine. The field study revealed that when driving, skidder operators were exposed to vibrations with higher accelerations and lower frequency exposures while adopting the most neutral postures. When dropping-off (DOAL), picking-up (PUAL) or ploughing a load, operators were exposed to vibrations with lower accelerations and higher frequency exposures while adopting the postures furthest away from neutral. Furthermore, operators who adopted the greatest lateral trunk bending and forward flexion for the greatest percentage of time reported low-back and neck pain, however, interestingly were not exposed to the greatest exposure accelerations. Operators who complained of neck pain as a result of twisting to see the rear of the vehicle while DOAL and PAUL experienced some of the highest translational and rotational vibration exposures during those operating conditions. This suggests that WBV exposures and postures may interact to produce operator injuries. The laboratory study revealed a number of interactions between vibration exposure (magnitude, spectra and axis), posture, muscle activity, trunk stiffness, vibration transmissibility, dominant transmission frequency and spinal level. In general, experiment conditions expected to increase trunk muscle activity and stiffness typically did. In contrast, the expected increase in vibration transmissibility and dominant transmission frequency with increased muscle activity and trunk stiffness was not present under many of the simulated field conditions. Trunk muscle activity patterns necessary to maintain required trunk postures were often out of phase with input accelerations, reducing trunk stiffness and increasing transmissibility. These results are contrary to findings from previous studies thus bringing into question the appropriateness of literature based vibration exposure guidelines. La turbulence diminue le confinement du plasma et dégrade les performances des réacteurs à fusion. Différentes instabilités peuvent induire la turbulence comme les Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) et les Trapped Electron Modes (TEM). Etant donné que les ITG et les TEM sont déstabilisés par différent gradients, ils peuvent tous les deux être stables, instables, ou donner un seul mode dominant.Il est important de pouvoir discriminer expérimentalement les régimes dominés par les TEM ou les ITG car le transport et la rotation qu’ils induisent peuvent être sensiblement différents.Des méthodes expérimentales existent pour cela, mais elles sont complexes et pas toujours réalisables. Cette thèse montre qu’une analyse des spectres fréquentiels de fluctuation peut fournir une indication expérimentale du mode dominant.En fonction du scénario du plasma, les spectres peuvent exhiber différentes composantes. Dans cette thèse il est montré que l’un d’eux appelé mode "Quasi-Cohérent" (QC) est induit par les TEM dans le plasma de cœur.Cette découverte a été faite dans des plasmas Ohmiques par des mesures de réflectométrie et des simulations gyrocinétiques combinées à un réflectomètre synthétique. Elles montrent que les TEM induisent des spectres fréquentiels étroits responsables des modes QC observés expérimentalement dans le cœur du plasma. Ces modes QC ont été renommés QC-TEM en référence à leur lien avec les TEM.Les premières applications de ces résultats ont ensuite été faites dans des plasmas Ohmiques et dans ceux chauffés par ondes à la fréquence cyclotronique électronique. De plus, des transitions ont été rapportées entre les QC-TEM et des modes MHD.

Plasma Turbulence is responsible of the anomalous transport which degrades the performances of the fusion devices. Turbulence is trigger by different instabilities such as the Ion Temperature Gradient Modes (ITG) and the Trapped Electron Modes (TEM). As ITG and TEM are driven by different gradients, they can either both be stable, both coexist or give way to a single dominant mode. The transport and the toroidal velocity induced by ITG and TEM can be noticeably different thus it is important to be able to discriminate experimentally the dominant modes. Different experimental approaches exist to distinguish ITG from TEM but they are complex and not systematically feasible. This thesis shows that frequency fluctuation spectra can provide an additional experimental indication of the dominant mode.These spectra can show different components:-Broadband spectra (delta-f around hundreds of kHz) which are generally attributed to turbulence.-Coherent modes (delta-f around 1 kHz) which oscillate at a very well-defined frequency.-Quasi-Coherent (QC) modes (delta-f around tens of kHz) which oscillate at a rather well defined frequency but are reminiscent of the broadband fluctuations.Reflectometry measurements and gyrokinetic simulations combined with a synthetic reflectometer diagnostics show that TEM can induce QC modes in the core region of Ohmic plasmas. Fast precise moisture measurement in mineral process plants, has long been a difficult problem. In this master thesis a foundation for a new way of measurement using transmission line theory, is laid out. Macroscopic electro-magnetic properties of the measured sample can be linked to those of the individual constituents of the sample. Thus one is believed to be able to do a precise estimate of the amount of moisture in a sample. In our case the samples are moist magnetite concentrate. The characterization of sample macroscopic electro-magnetic properties is done by using a coaxial cell, performing frequency spectra measurement. In this master thesis, the electrical behavior that links the measured data to the macroscopic electro-magnetic properties is examined. It exists two setups, one inductive and one capacitive. The DC resistivity of the moist magnetite concentrate is determined and some interesting phenomena, suggested to be self potential were discovered. This phenomenon is in general known from geochemistry of mineral rich clays. This made the measurements of resistivity tricky to perform, some measurements were achieved and a new relation between moisture of the moist magnetite concentrate and resistivity is presented. Studies have been performed on the history of attempts of solving this problem, as well as current relevant research. Reference samples have been prepared in a geotechnical laboratory. Impedance frequency behavior of the measurement equipment is measured and presented, with different curves for different moisture content. From these measurements it is obvious that the moisture affects the impedance of the measurement equipment and thus it is possible to use this method to measure moisture content, if one can determine the electrical model which describes the measurement system. A few equivalent circuits of transmission lines have been discussed, and one was chosen to represent the purely coaxial part of the coaxial cell. Other parts have been modeled with other elements of AC theory. A new electrical model for the coaxial probe is proposed, based on LC resonances. Some Comsol FEM simulations have been performed on the coaxial cell, as well as on electric property sensors. Ideas to designs of electrical sensors are discussed. It is mainly the geometry which has been investigated. First it was proposed that a phenomenon of resonance occurs at the interface of the bottom and coaxial part of the cell, LC resonance. The resonance effect has later been investigated and identified as quarter wavelength resonance, due to the length of the measurement cell and change of wave velocity due to wave propagation in MUT. Simulations of proposed circuit equivalents in Orcad with PSpice have given some correlation with measured data for dry and non-conducting samples. There is still work to be done, to complete an accurate mathematical model of the system.

▼ Voltage source inverter (VSI) fed induction motors are increasingly used in industrial and transportation applications as variable speed drives. However, VSIs generate non-sinusoidal voltages and hence result in harmonic distortion in motor current, motor heating, torque pulsations and increased acoustic noise. Most of these undesirable effects can be reduced by increasing the switching frequency of the inverter. This is not necessarily true for acoustic noise. Acoustic noise does not decrease monotonically with increase in switching frequency since the noise emitted depends on the proximity of harmonic frequencies to the motor resonant frequencies. Also there are practical limitations on the inverter switching frequency on account of device rating and losses. The switching frequency of many inverters often falls in the range 2 kHz - 6 kHz where the human ear is highly sensitive. Hence, the acoustic noise emission from the motor drive is of utmost important. Further, the acoustic noise emitted by the motor drive is known to depend on the waveform quality of the voltage applied. Hence, the acoustic performance varies with the pulse width modulation (PWM) technique used to modulate the inverter, even at the same modulation index. Therefore a comprehensive study on the acoustic noise aspects of induction motor drive is required. The acoustic noise study of the motor drive poses multifaceted challenges. A simple motor model is sufficient for calculation of total harmonic distortion (THD). A more detailed model is required for torque pulsation studies. But the motor acoustic noise is affected by many other factors such as stator winding distribution, space harmonics, geometry of stator and rotor slots, motor irregularities, structural issues controlling the resonant frequency and environmental factors. Hence an accurate model for acoustic noise would have to be very detailed and would span different domains such as electromagnetic fields, structural engineering, vibration and acoustics. Motor designers employ such detailed models along with details of the materials used and geometry to predict the acoustic noise that would be emitted by a motor and also to design a low-noise motor. However such detailed motor model for acoustic noise purposes and the necessary material and constructional details of the motor are usually not available to the user. Also, certain factors influencing the acoustic noise change due to wear and tear during the operational life of the motor. Hence this thesis takes up an experimental approach to study the acoustic noise performance of an inverter-fed induction motor at any stage of its operating life. A 10 kVA insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based inverter is built to feed the induction motor; a 6 kW and 2.3 kW induction motors are used as experimental motors. A low-cost acoustic noise measurement system is also developed as per relevant standards for measurement and spectral analysis of the acoustic noise emitted. ▼ This thesis presents a theoretical study of thermoelastic guided waves in cylinders in the context of Lord-Shulman generalized theory of thermoelasticity. Two different methods were formulated to study dispersion relations in infinite cylinders. One of them is a Semi Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) method and the other is an analytical method. In the SAFE method, the dispersion equation has been formulated as a generalized eigenvalue problem by treating radial displacement and temperature with a one dimensional finite element model through the thickness of the cylinder. In the analytical method, displacement potentials are introduced to obtain the dispersion relations of guided wave modes. This method is applicable to isotropic cylinders and has been developed primarily to cross check the SAFE formulation. Frequency spectra obtained by both methods for an isotropic cylinder have shown excellent agreement with each other. Since the SAFE method can be used for an anisotropic composite cylinder, guided wave modes for anisotropic and composite cylinders are presented. Transient analysis of ultrasonic guided waves generated by concentrated heating of the outer surface of an infinite anisotropic cylinder has also been studied. The SAFE method is employed to model the response of a cylinder due to a pulsed laser focused on its surface. Green’s functions were constructed numerically by superposition of guided wave modes in frequency and wave number domains. Time histories of the propagating modes are then calculated by applying an inverse Fourier transformation in the time domain. Transient radial displacements of longitudinal and flexural modes of a silicon nitride cylinder are presented. Propagation of thermoelastic waves in finite length circular cylinders have also been investigated. The SAFE method is used to simulate the guided wave modes in the cylinder. Frequency spectra obtained by the SAFE formulation, for a finite length transversely isotropic cylinder, are validated by comparing the numerical results with relevant publications. Frequency spectra for axisymmetric and asymmetric modes in a silicon nitride finite cylinder with both ends insulated and restrained by frictionless rigid walls are presented. The plain strain problem of circumferential guided waves is also studied and the results are validated for an isothermal case. ▼ Simultaneous two-point three-component four-sensor hot-wire velocity measurements taken in three flows of aeroacoustic interest are here analyzed. The analyses provide information on the turbulence structure of the flows as it would be encountered by hypothetical noise producing blades passing through the flows. Two-point measurements taken in the first flow, a lifting wake from a rectangular NACA 0012 half wing, are used to calculate space-time correlation functions and 'pointwise' wave number frequency spectra. Two upwash spectra, calculated for locations in the region of the wake that is roughly homogenous in the spanwise direction, are direct estimates of the full wave number frequency spectra at their locations. As such, they are used to perform aeroacoustic calculations, and the results are compared to results achieved using the von KÃ¡rmÃ¡n isotropic spectrum. Amiet's approximation, where the wave number frequency spectra can be represented by the correlation length scales is found to hold reasonably well for the measured spectra. The two-point measurements in the second flow, a vortex/blade-tip interaction, are analyzed to provide information useful to researchers of blade-wake interaction noise produced by helicopter rotors. Space-time correlation functions and wave number frequency spectra are calculated for five cuts through the region of interaction. The correlation functions provide information concerning the turbulence length scales found in the interaction region. The spectra are compared to the von KÃ¡rmÃ¡n isotropic spectrum and found to be greatly different. However, the spectra do bear some resemblance to spectra calculated in the spanwise homogenous region of the lifting wake. The two-point measurements taken in the third flow, the wake from a fan cascade, are analyzed to provide information of use to modelers of broadband noise produced through rotor wake/stator interactions. In particular, space-time correlation functions are calculated for a grid of two-point measurements, which allows the estimation of the turbulence structure as seen by a passing stator blade. Space-time correlation functions and wave number frequency spectra are calculated for various stator configurations. ▼ The Insurance Bureau of Canada released a report in 2013 that evaluated the seismic risk of two major metropolitan areas of Canada, with projected losses of 75bn in British Columbia along the Cascadia subduction zone, and 63bn in the east through the Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec corridor. Such reports should prompt researchers and designers alike to rethink the way that seismic design is approached in Canada to develop resilient and sustainable cities for the future. To mitigate the economic losses associated with earthquake damage to buildings in seismically active areas, controlled rocking steel braced frames have been developed as a seismically resilient low-damage lateral-force resisting system. Controlled rocking steel braced frames (CRSBFs) mitigate structural damage during earthquakes through a controlled rocking mechanism, where energy dissipation can be provided at the base of the frame, and pre-stressed tendons pull the frame back to its centred position after rocking. The result is a building for which the residual drifts of the system after an earthquake are essentially zero, and the energy dissipation does not result from structural damage. Design methods for the base rocking joint and the capacity-protected frame members in CRSBFs have been proposed and validated both numerically and experimentally. However, the is no consensus on how to approach the design of the frame members, questions remain regarding how best to design CRSBFs to prevent building collapse, and no experimental work has been done regarding how to connect the CRSBF to the rest of the structure to accommodate the rocking motion. Because the force limiting mechanism of a CRSBF is rocking only at the base of the frame, the frame member forces are greatly influenced by the higher-mode response, resulting in more complex methods to design the frame members. This thesis begins by outlining two new design procedures for the frame members in controlled rocking steel braced frames that target both simplicity and accuracy. The first is a dynamic procedure that requires a truncated response spectrum analysis on a model of the frame with modified boundary conditions to consider the rocking behaviour. The second is an equivalent static procedure that does not require any modifications to the elastic frame model, instead using theory-based lateral force distributions to consider the higher modes of the rocking structure. Neither method requires empirical calibration to estimate the forces at the target intensity. The base rocking joint design is generally in good agreement between the various research programs pioneering the development of the CRSBFs. However, the numerous parameters available to select during the design of the base rocking joint give designers an exceptional amount of control over the performance of the system, and little research is available on how best to select these parameters to target or minimise the probability of collapse for the building.
