▼ Software reuse is prevalent in
software development. It is not uncommon that one
software product may depend on numerous libraries/products in order to build, install, or run.
Software reuse is difficult due to the complex interdependency relationships between
software packages. In this work, we presented four approaches to retrieve such dependency information, each technique focuses on retrieving
software dependency from a specific source, including source code, build scripts, binary files, and Debian spec. The presented techniques were realized by a prototype tool, DEx, which is applied to a large collection of Debian projects in a comprehensive evaluation. Through the comprehensive analysis, we evaluate the presented techniques, and compare them from various aspects.

▼ The aim of this bachelor thesis is to deal with the topics related to public
software licenses, their use, their properties in the form of specific contractual agreements (license aspects), mutual compatibility and followingly take this information and systemize it of a form of an information portal, which is the practical output of this thesis. At the beginning of the thesis, the current issue of why public
software licenses are used today and how they are legally perceived is examined. Emphasis is placed on Czech law in the context of civil code and copyright law and with them associated licensing agreements, since the vast majority of the license terms of the world-wide used
free software licenses is only written in English, and the terminology is based on the United States legal system. Consequently, the nomenclature and the necessary terms for working with the license terms are unified. In the main part of the thesis specific licenses are selected according to their relative usage and their characteristics based on relevant market surveys. These chosen licenses and their license agreements are analyzed more in-depth. Specific contractual agreements of said license agreements are expanded upon whilst being named in the thesis as “license aspects”. In the practical part of the thesis is described a solution for a web information portal, which should serve the laic as an initial view on the issue of public
software licenses. The site addresses the issues of selecting a specific public
software license for its original work (
software), introducing specific licenses and comparing them based on analyzed licensing aspects, compatibility of more public
software licenses in a larger composite
software unit in which the individual
software components of the whole are licensed under various public
software licenses. Also, the consequences of choosing one of the selected public
software licenses for the future of the
software are described. At the end of the thesis, the vision of the future information portal, its expansion with other functionalities and its overall possible improvement based on feedback from the public are also presented.

▼ Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou topologické správy vektorových dat v geografických informačních systémech GIS. V rámci této práce byly navrženy a realizovány změny ve vektorové architektuře desktopového open source GIS nástroje GRASS s cílem zlepšení její interoperability. Součástí práce je návrh a realizace nové generace grafického uživatelského rozhraní systému GRASS GIS včetně specializovaných nástrojů orientovaných na nové vlastnosti vektorové architektury, které byly v rámci této práce implementovány.; The doctoral thesis deals with storing vector data in geographical information systems GIS. Well-known open source GRASS GIS was used as a platform for the development. Within the scope of this thesis the GRASS GIS vector architecture was re-designed and the new features developed to increase its interoperability. Significantly improved OGR interface brings to GRASS GIS ability to read and write vector data in various GIS formats. Newly designed PostGIS interface allows to store and manipulate with vector data in the geospatial database PostGIS including full support for topological access to the data. This allows the GRASS user to store topological vector data except of the native file-based data format also in the PostGIS database. In OGR library was implemented support for the Czech Cadastral Exchange Data Format to allow reading cadastral data using various open source tools including GRASS GIS or QGIS. Also a new generation of the graphical user interface for GRASS was designed and developed including tools supporting newly developed features of the GRASS GIS vector architecture.

▼ Releasing
software is challenging. To decide when to release
software, developers may
consider a deadline, a set of features or quality attributes. Yet, there are many stories of
software that is not released on time. In large-scale
software development, release management
requires significant communication and coordination. It is particularly challenging
in
Free and Open Source
Software (FOSS) ecosystems, in which hundreds of loosely connected
developers and their projects are coordinated for releasing
software according to a
schedule.
In this work, we investigate the release management process in two large-scale FOSS
development projects. In particular, our focus is the communication in the whole release
management process in each ecosystem across multiple releases. The main research questions
addressed in this dissertation are: (1) How do developers in these FOSS ecosystems
communicate and coordinate to build and release a common product based on different
projects? (2) What are the release management tasks in a FOSS ecosystem? and (3) What
are the challenges that release managers face in a FOSS ecosystem?
To understand this process and its challenges better, we used a multiple case study
methodology, and colleced evidence from a combination of the following sources: documents,
archival records, interviews, direct observation, participant observation, and physical
artifacts. We conducted the case studies on two FLOSS
software ecosystems: GNOME
and OpenStack. We analyzed over two and half years of communication in each ecosystem
and studied developers’ interactions. GNOME is a collection of libraries, system services,
and end-user applications; together, these projects provide a unified desktop —the GNOME
desktop. OpenStack is a collection of
software tools for building and managing cloud computing
platforms for public and private clouds. We catalogued communication channels,
categorized coordination activities in one channel, and triangulated our results by
interviewing key developers identified through social network analysis.
We found factors that impact the release process in a
software ecosystem, including a
release schedule positively, influence instead of direct control, and diversity. The release
schedule drives most of the communication within an ecosystem. To achieve a concerted release,
a Release Team helps developers reach technical consensus through influence rather
than direct control. The diverse composition of the Release Team might increase its reach
and influence in the ecosystem. Our results can help organizations build better large-scale
teams and show that
software engineering research focused on individual projects might
miss important parts of the picture.
The contributions of this dissertation are: (1) an empirical study of release management
in two FOSS ecosystems (2) a set of lessons learned from the case studies, and (3) a theory
of release management in FOSS ecosystems. We summarize our theory that explains our
understanding of release management in…

software development relies on open-source
software to facilitate reuse and reduce redundant work.
Software developers use open-source packages in their projects without having insights into how these components are being developed and maintained. The aim of this thesis is to develop approaches for analyzing issue and dependency management in
software projects.
Software projects organize their work with issue trackers, tools for tracking issues such as development tasks, bug reports, and feature requests. By analyzing issue handling in more than 4,000 open-source projects, we found that many issues are left open for long periods of time, which can result in bugs and vulnerabilities not being fixed in a timely manner. This thesis proposes a method for predicting the amount of time it takes to resolve an issue by using the historical data available in issue trackers. Methods for predicting issue lifetime can help
software project managers to prioritize issues and allocate resources accordingly. Another problem studied in this thesis is how
software dependencies are used.

▼ There are few aspects of modern life that remain unaffected by
software, and as our day-to-day challenges change, so too must our
software.
Software systems are complex, and as they grow larger and more interconnected, they become more difficult to modify due to excessive change propagation. This is known as the ripple effect. The primary strategies to mitigate it are modular design, and minimization of coupling, or between-module interaction. However, analysis of complex networks has shown that many are scale-
free, which means that they contain some components that are highly connected. The presence of scale-
free structure implies high coupling, which suggests that
software systems may be hard to modify because they suffer from the ripple effect.
In this thesis, a large corpus of open-source
software systems is analysed to determine whether
software systems are scale-
free, whether scale-
free structure results in high coupling, and whether high coupling results in ripple effects that propagate change to a large proportion of classes.
The results show that all systems in the corpus are scale-
free and that that property results in high coupling. However, analysis of system evolution reveals that existing code is modified infrequently and that there is rarely sufficient evidence to be confident that ripple effects involving a high proportion of classes have actually occurred. This thesis concludes first that while it is desirable to avoid excessive interconnectivity, it is difficult to completely eliminate high coupling; and second, that the presence of high coupling does not necessarily imply poor system design.

The application of mobile electronic devices in Education has been increasing since the last decade. Projects such as UCA (Um Computador por Aluno), formulated by the Brazilian Federal Government, OLPC (One Laptop per Child), conducted by a nonprofit organization of the same name, and M-Learning, organized by European universities, are large-scale examples of that phenomenon. The educational impacts of those devices have been reported in those projects and in related ones; and they also indicate how to achieve positive results. However there is no Software Engineering models focused on producing the kind of applications used in this context. Thence this text analyzes the design particularities of these tools for mobile platforms, with a closer look to the collaborative development in free software communities and the Brazilian reality. The development of a drawing tool for the OLPC project was used as a study case for this research. This application was created using the Extreme Programming model in a team of researchers led by the author and it is currently supported by the OLPC community. Based in that experience, two Software Engineering models have been extended: Extreme Programming and Socio-cognitive Engineering. These extensions were developed in order to support a collocated team (working according to one of these two methods) interacting with a free software community.

In this Ph.D dissertation we present an approach about source code metrics tracking. We have researched source code metrics distributions and associations to discuss their causality and management-practices implications. Our studies have assessed distributions and correlations of source code metric values on 38 free software projects, which have a lot of activated contributors in their repositories. We have collected and analyzed metrics from 344,872 classes and modules of about 38 free software projects. Additionally, to show how it is useful to track source code metrics, we have extended the model of free software attractiveness to include source code metrics. Our technical attractiveness model indicates a statistical relationship between source code metrics and number of downloads, contributors, and commits in the analyzed free software repositories. For that, we have conducted empirical studies with 8,450 free software projects. From a practical point of view, we have contributed with a set of innovative tools for automated evaluation of free software projects. Our tool allow the analyses of source code metrics that mirror quality perceptions from the free software communities point of view.

Over the past historical periods the technique has played an important role in the formulation of social demands. People always placed in the technologies their expectations and desires of constructing a different reality. The same thing has happened recently with digital technologies. Many social groups rely on technology as an enabling mechanism for a fairer and more democratic society, where the knowledge is unrestricted and widely available. In this work, we use a historical perspective to present a contemporary debate on digital technologies as emancipatory instruments. For that purpose, we investigated the GNU Project - an outstanding free software movement initiated by Richard Stallman in the 1980s - because of its long-term strive not only for a free computer science but also for free knowledge. We consider the GNU Project one of the main representatives of the current expectations of digital technologies as enabling mechanisms for a better society. We investigated the characteristics of GNU Projects speech and we tried to understand how it has been built over the time, as well as social practices which accompany individuals and what are its carriers. We identified, in the discourse, historically mobilizing keywords which may be used by both left- and right-wing groups. Furthermore, by positioning itself as a political project aimed to develop a diferente society, the…

Sharing knowledge is one of the main advantages brought to us by the Internet. Facebook and YouTube, for instance, are some of the tools that allow such goal. In this dissertation, a specific social networking site, named Stroome, will be analyzed and the network potential in the content creation through the interaction established between its users will be explored. Drawing a timeline that starts with the Free and Open Source Software movement until the Web 2.0 phenomena, this specific social network will be described with the help of concepts such as «Read/Write» and «Read Only» cultures proposed by Lawrence Lessig. In the end, taking into account issues such as intellectual property rights, I tried to understand the motivation underneath the users‟ participation and the purpose of the contents they produce within the social networking site.

The concept of free software is almost as old as the software industry. Understanding the dynamics of formation, composition, organization, interests and limits of a free software community is not an easy task. It\'s a fuzzy and complex scene that resembles an organizational chaos. The importance of free software communities grows up every year, be it due to its adoption by the government or by the private market. These points to possible changes in the dynamics of free software development in Brazil. The following work has the objective of evidencing, by the optics of the free software communities, how much the free software development model in Brazil is leaving its ideological focus and instead being made due to business opportunities. As such free software communities related aspects are presented and its possible relation with the information technology market.

Society is always looking for innovations as process facilitators for the objectives in different areas, using tools, and various techniques. Among these is the Reverse Engineering (RE), which is the engineering process in order to obtain a product or object from a original model. In recent years, with the rapid technological evolution, involving machines, tools and software, ER has become a resource used until even by small and medium-sized enterprises. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of engineering resources, such as hardware and software. low cost or free-use software on the RE in order to obtain a part machined in a CNC machine as faithful as possible to the original physical model. For applied the concepts, processes and resources required in the steps reconstruction of a physical model, since 3D scanning, using scanners dimensionality, the treatment of the captured object, the reconstruction of the model in the CAD software to the generation of the G code, through CAM software, to be sent to a CNC machine to perform the machining and obtain the model part. Was the Ciclop 3d manual scanner, whose many close to the original object. Meshlab softwares were also used for handling the scanned model and AutoCad Fusion 3D for creating the model and generation of the machining processes and G code, chosen due to ease of use and because they are free software.

▼ Our times has been marked by profound paradigmatic transformations which resulted from several reconfigurations in the social, cultural and technological fields. From the symbiotic relation among the information society, culture, and the new communication and information technologies, a new sociocultural form, called Cyberculture, emerges within the contemporary society. In this context, based on the succesful experiences of free software development communities, we saw the emergence of several initiatives in the cyberspace which aim to collaborate around the production of cultural and informational assets of common interest. Those free software projects and other initiatives in the cyberspace are examples of the emergence of a new form of production based on large scale collaboration taken by self-motivated individuals. This research aims to investigate the way this production form happens in the GNOME Project community. GNOME is a free software project which aims to develop a desktop environment for GNU/Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, and a platform for the development of desktop applications. The GNOME Project has a community with aproximately 500 contributors from several countries who collaborate around the development of high complexity software modules. More specificaly, well investigate the relation between the new communication technologies and collaborative actions in the cyberspace; identify which eletronic communication instruments are used in GNOME; and how those instruments are used on the collaboration among project participants.
The Information Technologies that western societies have been experimenting for the last few decades brought a profusion of digital machines and their operating systems. During this period, industry developed sophisticated and expensive proprietary application softwares for the full use of these machines, and took good part of the social market to the hands of few multinational companies, Microsoft among them. But the libertarian spirit of some members of scientific and hakers communities promoted the development of free and open software, that can be used as a ampler social good, and, mainly, evolve in optimum of the collaborative spirit. The present work studies the two models of software production, compares them aiming at the evidentes of qualities of each one, its costs and possibilities of adoption. It projects the possibility that courses of the Social Communication area could migrate to the free software model, given the qualities of this system, the radical reduction of costs and the conclusions that ample segments of communication production are adopting them. For this purpose, it compares the experiences applied with both systems in two courses of communication, in its qualification for audio and motion picture production.(AU)

▼ This work approaches the study, project and implementation of a virtual environment of education and learning, based on the environment AMEM (Surrounding Multimedia for the Education Mediated for Computer). The Environment AMEM was developed using total free technologies, being this a premise for its project of implementation in its second version. Based in the first version of the environment, it was made an analysis based on studies and experiences with the use of the same, concluding itself that the same it would have to be remodeled and implementation, using more current technologies for its development. Being thus, he was definite that the same programming language JSP (Java Server Pages) and the data base PostgresSQL would be developed using it. Also one verified that the AMEM it would have to hold a module of pedagogical and administrative reports, for the relative extraction of information the pedagogical aspects in what it is mentioned you discipline them, groups, activities and to the student . Being thus, a system was developed, that became possible the professor, to the same get the biggest number of referring information to these data, making possible an analysis of its work, improving this, as well as the exportation and importation of these data

▼ In 2009, the University of Edinburgh was approached by Edinburgh City Council to
participate in a project to create a property information service for public consumption
based on the council’s Corporate Address Gazetteer which would take the form of an
online interactive map. This service fell within the framework of the ‘One Scotland:
One Geography’ policy initiative. It also fell within the proposed objectives of a new
updated One Scotland: One Geography policy yet to be published. To further
conform to this initiative, it was decided to adopt a
Free/Open Source solution to
serve the requirements as set out by the customer, a user group and also mimicked the
functionality demonstrated on similar local council web sites. A survey was then
undertaken to understand the reasons why FOSS had not been adopted by many
councils to serve their web mapping needs. The survey concluded that a lack of
technical knowledge, as well as issues regarding the availability of support when
adopting FOSS and the tie in of councils to an IT out-sourcing agreement were issues.
To address the issue of technical knowledge, a service meeting user requirements,
InformED, was created (available at www.informedinburgh.co.uk) utilising FOSS
solutions which required only basic programming skills to implement. The solution
was then evaluated to positive reception. The second part of this paper chronicles the
steps necessary to re-create such a service.

▼ The purpose of this research was to identify factors that affect participants’ satisfaction with their experience of a
free/libre open source
software (FLOSS) project. The research built on existing models of user satisfaction from the information systems literature, and also incorporated two characteristics of FLOSS projects first identified by Ye, Nakakoji, Yamamoto, and Kishida (2005), product openness and process openness. The central research question it answered was, What factors influence participant satisfaction with a
free/libre and open source application
software project?
Richard Stallman’s reasons for setting up the GNU project and the
Free Software Foundation arose from his frustration at being forced to be a passive user of
software used for a Xerox printer. These suggest that being able to be an active participant in a FLOSS project is one factor that should be examined, and therefore the first sub-question this project answers is, What types of contributions do participants make to
free/libre and open source
software projects?
Several studies have shown that the extent of participation in a FLOSS project varies from individual to individual, and this variation leads to the second sub-question, Do the factors that influence satisfaction vary for different types of participation? If so, in what way?
A preliminary conceptual model of factors affecting participant satisfaction was developed, reflecting the key concepts identified in the literature. The main theoretical goal of this research was to test the model using empirical data.
The research used a sequential, mixed methods approach. The first, qualitative stage involved reviewing documents from selected projects and interviewing a purposive sample of FLOSS project participants. The second, quantitative stage involved an online survey of FLOSS project participants, and the data gathered were used to test the conceptual model.
The results of the first stage showed that participation in FLOSS projects was a more complex construct than previously reported in the literature. Seven distinct categories of activities were identified:
• use;
• interaction with code;
• supporting the community;
• outreach;
• sponsorship;
• management; and
• governance.
Four attributes that modified these categories were also identified: organisational focus, role formality, remuneration, and time commitment.
Data from 154 responses to the online survey were used to test the model using stepwise multiple regression, which determined the effect of each of the variables on overall participant satisfaction. Moderated regression analysis was used to test the effects of three potential moderating variables. The results showed that that perceived system complexity had the largest effect, decreasing satisfaction if respondents perceived that the
software was complex, while project openness and perceived developer communication quality accounted for the most variance in satisfaction.
The main theoretical contribution of this research lies in its extension of satisfaction studies to…

▼ This study investigated the use of an advanced
technological development (
free GeoGebra
software) within the
secondary educational setting in four relatively under-resourced
schools in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. This advancement
is viewed as having the potential to promote the teaching and
learning of complex ideas in mathematics, even within traditionally
deprived communities. The focus in this study was on the teaching
and learning of transformation geometry at Grade 9 and attainment
was reflected in terms of the van Hieles' levels of geometrical
thinking. A mixed methods approach was followed, where data was
collected through lesson observations, written tests and
semi-structured interviews. Four Grade 9 teachers from four schools
were purposively selected, while twenty-four mathematics learners
(six from each school) in the Tshwane metropolitan region were
randomly selected. The teachers' lesson observations and interview
outcomes were coded and categorised into themes, and the learners'
test scripts were marked and captured. The analysis of test scores
was structured according to the van Hieles' levels of geometric
thought development. As far as the use of GeoGebra is concerned, it
was found that teachers used the program in preparation for, as
well as during lessons; learners who had access to computers or
android technology, used GeoGebra to help them with practice and
exercises. As far as the effect of the use of GeoGebra is
concerned, improved performance in transformation geometry was
demonstrated.

▼ Coding Commons: Fun and the Ubuntu Labor Process
explores what is at stake in how we understand ""digital work"" and
builds a theory of code that exposes the dependencies and
externalities of code production. This labor geography uses
ethnographic research methods to analyze the labor process of
Ubuntu, an international
software project emblematic of emerging
conditions of work and new organizations of productive resources.
Ubuntu is a
free software project – meaning that the collaborative
practices of creating Ubuntu are dedicated to making it freely
available to be used and changed by anyone – and it is built by the
labor of a few hundred paid contributors and tens of thousands of
volunteers. Ubuntu is made via an on-going uneasy negotiation
between the capitalist mode of production and a non-capitalist mode
of production organized by something coders themselves call
""fun."" My research has revealed that fun is more than an
individual motivation or experience: it is a means through which
labor is organized. As firms seek to capitalize on our desire for
fun – via processes such as ""crowd-sourcing"" or the creation of
""fun"" workplaces – knowing what our fun produces is as important
as knowing what our work produces. So, why this fun now? What else
does our work and fun produce when part of the commons? What is the
nature of the relationship between capitalism and the commons when
code is held in common? What is code? Or, to sum all these
questions up, how is life breathed into 0s and 1s? I answer these
questions though the words and experiences of Ubuntu contributors,
all the while working to build a theory of the material life of
code. This theory rests on my argument that code is the material
with which all things digital are made. Code is metal, plastics,
and other material that has a dual nature: it is both something
akin to a set of instructions, and in it its use, code is movement
and machine. I demonstrate how focusing on this material life
allows for tracing the movement of value into the commons and
though moments of being put to use for capital – in other words, how
it works that capital can seek a spatial fix in a commons of
computer code. Capital is dependent upon the commons, and making
sense of the form and outcomes of this dependency is crucial to
understanding capitalism and its extractive strategies. Dealing
with the material life of code and coders leaves us with the
challenge of connecting distant people, machines, and labor
processes that are all part of creating the computing environment
we have before us. Making these connections is a basis for making
it common sense to ask: is a more just way of distributing
resources is possible? And how can any work – from coding to hand
soldering circuit boards – be organized so that it is fun? And how
might this fun be part of creating humane and sustainable ways for
producing what we need and more justly allocating the surpluses we
produce?
