▼ Nowadays, the need for an even more integrated management approach of woodlands as well as the flexibility that a full road network offers against the prevention of risk of forest fires have led us to the completion of the opening of many woodlands. According to our point of view, compatibility and smooth access to all points of the road network throughout the year is a challenge as well as its proper management and organization for its maintenance. Building a unified database that will function as a platform for development in the area can be considered to be the cornerstone for the generation of a developmental plan. Such a plan will include the registration and production of an electronic database that consists of the basic elements of the property ownership and of the main characteristics of the forest road network and of the forest techniques applied so far.The present thesis can be divided into three distinct sections:The first section describes the production of a land registry database. The thesis focuses on three different areas of investigation in terms of both their topological and morphological characteristics as well as of their social and economic data. Towards this end, orthophotomaps of the year 1945 have been produced for areas where these were either lacking or whose precision was not sufficient enough for our purposes. For later years, existing orthophotomaps were used as their precision and visibility were deemed to be adequate. In this way, we have generated forest maps using single-photograph observation of the orthophotomaps, stereoscopic observation of aerial photographs as well as spot checks and autopsies. Forest maps of all three areas of investigation have been created. The second section seeks to address the process of registration and production of an integrated database that consists of road network data, such as the recording and classification of forest works and forest roads and their subsequent taxonomy in terms of the degree of access they offer. We believe that a modern view on this issue will offer a deeper analysis of the problem and will help us suggest a policy of maintenance on a systematic basis that will be organized around three main pillars: diagnosis-forecast-programming. The fully-integrated systems of maintenance usually consist of mathematical models that are equivalent to the three pillars mentioned above and they are used to manage and assess the data of a problem, be they technical, circulatory, financial leading to specific solutions necessary for the interventions that have to be made defining at the same time the time needed for the execution, the size, type and cost of the operations. Such a system was applied in two different areas of investigation, i.e. Lailia and Pilio. The third section presents the production of a 3-D interactive depiction of the area. ▼ Erosion and sedimentation related to roads in mountainous areas have long been a concern for land managers and those charged with protecting soil, water and streams. Erosion in the Mill and Luffenholtz Creek watersheds in Humboldt County, California, with their extensive clay soils, can lead to high turbidity levels in receiving bodies of water. These eroded clays, once suspended in flowing water, can increase the costs of treating water for domestic water supplies. Furthermore a health hazard can result from the creation of disinfection bi-products, such as chloro-tri-halomethanes. Reasons for studying turbidity in these creeks included the use of these creeks for domestic water supplies for the City of Trinidad and the surrounding area and the presence of endangered species of fish. In addition the receiving waters of Trinidad Bay have been designated an Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS), as well as a Critical Coastal Area (CCA). Local residents were interested in identifying sediment sources and implementing practices to remedy these problem areas. Detailed road and erosion surveys and monitoring of suspended sediment, discharge, and turbidity levels in Mill Creek (3.11 kilometers??) and Luffenholtz Creek (12.95 kilometers??) were completed to determine the sources of turbidity. Two continuous turbidity and stage monitoring stations in lower Mill and Luffenholtz Creeks were maintained along with six additional grab sample locations. Watershed physiographic and land use characteristics were compared for those basin areas upstream from the eight monitoring sites and a statistical analysis was completed to determine whether significant differences existed between turbidity levels in the watersheds. The Luffenholtz Creek watershed, particularly Grassy and 18 Creeks, and the main stem of Luffenholtz, just downstream of the 21 Rock Quarry, were the sub-watershed areas with the highest turbidities. They were also the sub-watershed areas with the highest density of roads, the most miles of roads adjacent to streams, and the highest concentration of identified erosion prone sites. Statistical analysis showed that Luffenholtz Creek was significantly more turbid than Mill Creek, and the site downstream of the 21 Rock Quarry was significantly more turbid than the site upstream of the 21 Quarry. Total instantaneous loads for a three-storm period (5/1-5/4, 5/4-5/9, and 5/13-5/17/2009) representing three of eight major storms for the year, were approximately 0.016 metric tons per kilometer?? for Luffenholtz Creek and 0.0006 metric tons per kilometer?? for Mill Creek. Although Mill Creek was the watershed with the highest rate of timber harvesting over the past ten years, the steepest stream profile, and a history of more extensive fires, its turbidities were nearly always lower than Luffenholtz Creek. The main goals of this research are:1.The study of the forest opening-up data in the research areas.2.The study of the conditions that prevail in the research areas (vegetation, geological formations, slopes, altitudes, exposures). 3.The calculation of the size of forest road density.4.The selection of the proper velocity for surveying the road network with the use of GPS on a car (kinematic method).5.The seasonal comparison (winter-summer) of the forest road (measuring with GPS Hiper Pro and Total Station Leica TC 805L).6.The study of spatial and temporal variations in the forest opening-up of the research area. The completion of the above goals was achieved through research on the data that are analyzed and processed in this dissertation, which includes: 1.A bibliographical review on the means and the types of forest opening-up (Chapter 2, par. 2.1, 2.2, 2.4).2.The collection and data processing of ideal road density estimates (Chapter 2, par. 2.4.1.1.3.1, 2.4.1.1.3.1.1) (Table 5.1-1).3.The collection and data processing of all the primary elements from the measurements that were conducted for the selection of the proper velocity for the kinematic method (Chapter 5, par. 5.2), (Tables 6.3-1, 6.3-2, 6.3-3).4.The collection and data processing of all the elements for the seasonal comparison (winter-summer) of the road network survey (Chapter 5, par. 5.2).5. The digitization of forest and basic road network maps dating to 1945, 1996, and 2007 in order to calculate the length of the roads in each category and the comparison of the first two with that of 2007 (Chapter 5, par. 5.2). Furthermore, data was collected on the length of the roads concerning the period from 2007 to 2013 from the Forestry Office of the Taxiarchis University Forest.In accordance with the processing of the data that was collected from the research area:1.The size of road opening was calculated with three methods. -The method of amortization resulted in Dοικ= 27,20m/ha, Dθ= 17,74m/ha (Picture 6.1-1, Table 6.1-1).-The method of internal rate of return resulted in Dοικ= 23,84m/ha, Dθ= 17,87 m/ha (Picture 6.1-2, Table 6.1-2).-The method of cost-benefit analysis resulted in Dαρ=33, 70m/ha.2.The road density was calculated based on the data which refer to road lengths of the years 1970, 1980, and 2013. 3.The proper velocity of the kinematic method was also calculated (Tables 6.3.-1, 6.3-2, 6.3-3).4.The seasonal comparison (winter-summer) of the road network depiction was achieved (Tables 6.3.1-1 , 6.3.1-2).5.The spatial and temporal variations of the University Forest of Taxiarchis’ forest opening-up for the years 1945, 1996, and 2007 were also calculated. 138.000m of new roads were constructed from 1945 to 2007, whereas from 2007 to 2013 50.000m were built (Tables 6.4-1, 6.4-2, 6.4-3, 6.4-4).

Magistro darbe tiriami medžių pažeidimų kiekiai ugdomuose eglynuose, medienos ištraukimui naudojant skirtingas medvežes. Darbo objektas – Tauragės miškų urėdija. Darbo tikslas – išanalizuoti medžių pažeidimų kiekius ugdomuose eglynuose, medienos ištraukimui naudojant skirtingas medvežes. Darbo metodai – Tyrimas buvo atliktas Tauragės miškų urėdijoje. Tyrimai atlikti ugdymo kirtimų biržėse, kuriose mediena buvo ištraukiama medvežėmis arba savikrovėmis priekabomis. Duomenys buvo renkami 2008 metų rugsėjo19-29, bei spalio 15-25 dienomis. Po medienos ištraukimo biržėse buvo skaičiuojami pažeisti medžiai, nustatomas žaizdų ilgis, plotis, aukštis, aukštis nuo šaknies kaklelio, pažeisto medžio atstumas nuo valksmo. Darbo rezultatai. Atlikus tyrimus ir skaičiavimus ugdomuose kirtimuose, Tauragės miškų urėdijoje, gauti tokie rezultatai: Medžių kamienai pažeidžiami iki 2,1 m aukščio, vidutinis žaizdų aukštis yra apie 1,1 m. Medžių žaizdų dydis kinta nuo 30 iki 280 cm., vidutinis žaizdos plotas yra 97,5 cm2. Dažniausios mažos ir vidutinio dydžio, iki 100 cm2 ploto žaizdos. Medžiai pažeidžiami iki 6 m pločio juostoje nuo valksmų. Didžiausia pažeidimų dalis tenka arčiausiai valksmų augantiems medžiams: 57,1 proc. visų pažeistų medžių yra 2 m pločio juostoje nuo valksmo, 2-4 m atstumu nuo valksmo – 28,8 proc. visų pažeistų medžių. Research where done by searching damages in spruce stand during thinning operations, using different type of forwarders. Object of the work - Taurages and Telsiu Forest enterprises. Aim of the work – to analyze amount of damages in spruce stand during thinning operations, using different type of forwarders. Methods – Investigation were made in Taurages forest enterprise. Plots were selected in areas where thinning operations was done, using forwarders. Data were collected in year 2008 September 19-29, and 2008 October 15-25. When the wood was logged from the area, all damaged trees were investigated. Distance from the strip road, injuries size (long, width), high were investigation objects. Results – During investigation in Taurage enterprise, collected data in thinning operations, gave following results: Stems where damaged till 2,1 meter high, average high around 1,1 m. Size of injuries vary from 30 to 280 cm2, average size 97,5 cm2. Small and average size injuries till 100 cm2 were most common. Trees were damaged 6 meters away from the edge of strip road. Biggest amount of injuries where found 2 meters away from strip road 57,1 % of all damaged trees, distance between 2-4 meters took 28,8 %. Less damages made smaller and weaker forwarder. In average 6,08±0,37 % of the trees, left after thinning, were damaged. ▼ The scope of this thesis is to investigate the design and properties of rigid concrete pavements for forest and mountainous areas of Greece. Rigid pavements at forest roads must provide adequate bearing capacity, long service life and good traffic conditions, with the minimum construction and maintenance cost.The area of research is Epirus, at Northwestern Greece, which is characterized as a steep, mountainous landscape, covered by forests to a great extent. Forest roads without pavement at the mountainous areas of Epirus must be maintained yearly in order to be usable. On the other hand, forest roads with rigid pavement have no need for maintenance and even at the end of the pavements life cycle remain useable. Rigid pavements have been established as a good technical solution for the Forest Service, which constructs them at forest roads with repeated surface wear.So far rigid pavements at forest roads in the mountains of Epirus have been constructed on an empirical basis. Basic parameters of road pavements design have been ignored. Furthermore, the energy footprint of the constructed forest rigid pavements is high and no industrial byproducts or recycled materials have been used in order to reduce life cycle cost.Forest and mountainous roads are low volume roads; trucks carry heavy loads of wood only during the harvest period. In mountain and forest areas, like the mountains in the area of Epirus, it is inefficient to record traffic volumes due to the extensive forest road network and bad weather conditions during the winter. For this reason, traffic load is estimated using forest wood production, farming intensity and the amount of industries located at forest and mountainous areas (quarries, wind farms, etc.). Using this information it is possible to calculate traffic load for any forest and mountainous area.In order to make a complete registry of the problems and failures of concrete pavements constructed in forest roads of the Region of Epirus, it was decided to record the existing concrete pavements by visiting and surveying most of the forest road network of Epirus. A large area of the Region of Epirus was covered including parts with high tree density.A database was created containing problems in the observed road network, in order to identify and present the most common causes of failure in the forest concrete pavements. An identification and categorization of the concrete pavement properties was carried out and core specimens were drilled from concrete, while soil specimens were also taken from the ground where the concrete layer was based on. The traffic load for the service life of the pavements was then estimated and, based on the results, the required concrete layer thickness was calculated. ▼ Roads alter the ecological landscape and affect the function and composition of nearby soil chemistry and plant communities in an area of impact termed the “edge-effect zone”. While the 6.3 million kilometers of roads in the US cover only about 1% of the land, the edge effect zone around these roads has been estimated to occupy nearly 20% of the total land area in the US (Forman 2000). The objective of this study was to examine the spatial extent of transported materials and impacts on forest soil and vegetative communities immediately surrounding roadways based on road types classified as “Highway,” “Two-Lane Paved,” and “Gravel.” This research was located within two watersheds in the state of Vermont, in areas where a substantial area of forest existed adjacent the roadway. Using GIS mapping, transects were constructed at right angles to the road, and samples were gathered at the Shoulder, Ditch, Backslope, 10m from the edge of the forest, and 50m from road center during the summer of May 2009 to August 2009. Soil samples were analyzed for a suite of nutrients and physical characteristics, as well as heavy metals. The forest composition and percent area coverage by species of herbaceous flora and woody shrubs were also recorded. The main effects from roads were dependent on the extent of clearing and topography modification required for a roadway. The spatial extent of these modifications was correlated positively with road use intensity. Highways have the greatest ecological impact and gravel roads the least impact. The cleared area defines how much sunlight is available to plant communities and the distance that road pollutants will travel. Some heavy metals (such as Pb, Cd, Ni and Zn) were correlated positively with road use intensity. Gravel roads have higher calcium content in nearby soil when compared to other road types. This is most likely due to mobilized dust from the road base. Proximity to all road types had neutralizing effects on the soil pH relative to the acidic native forest soil. Changes in microtopography next to the road have marked effects on the composition of plant communities through maintenance and direction of water flow. Ditch areas support wetland plants, and have greater soil moisture and sulfur content, while plant communities closer to the road are characteristic of drier upland zones. The area past the edge of the forest does not appear to be affected chemically or physically by any of the road types, possibly due to the dense vegetation that develops outside of the right-of-way. To reduce the ecological footprint of future road development, road corridors should be narrowed, traffic consolidated to mass transit systems such as busses or railroad, and buffer zones of vegetation next to the right-ofway should be encouraged to contain the spread of pollutants. ▼ Kessler Mountain in Fayetteville Arkansas has long been recognized for its beauty and natural resources. Parts of Kessler Mountain have been homesteaded and developed in the past, but most of the mountain has remained relatively undisturbed. The planned development of over 4,000 housing units to cover Kessler Mountain stimulated controversy and consideration of other management alternatives. A twist of fate involving an economic recession, a dedicated group of outdoor recreation enthusiasts, and environmental conservationists led to the permanent protection of 384 acres in the Kessler Mountain Regional Park. To help evaluate the natural resources at Kessler Mountain, forest composition, structure, and tree age were measured at two old growth forest parcels on Kessler Mountain. Forest understory and overstory were surveyed and increment cores were collected from select overstory trees. The overstory of the post oak (Quercus stellata) site (Site A) was dominated by post oak and northern red oak (Quercus rubra). The understory was dominated by northern red oak and black locust (Robnia pseudoacacia). The oldest post oak trees at the post oak site were in the 250 to 300-year-old age class based on dendrochronological analysis of core samples. The overstory of the chinkapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) site (Site B) was dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum var. saccharum) and chinkapin oak. The understory was dominated by eastern red cedar (Juniperous virginiana) and northern red oak. The oldest chinkapin oak trees at Site B were in the 200 to 250-year-old age class. The data suggest that chinkapin oak and post oak are currently not regenerating at rates necessary to maintain long term dominance in the canopy at these particular study sites on Kessler Mountain. As more land is conserved in the region significant planning and funding need to be dedicated to proper management of these lands to maintain biodiversity and healthy forests. ▼ Cieľom bakalárskej práce je návrh cykloturistickej trasy v úseku Bumbálka – Hluchanka. Cyklotrasa prechádza po hrebeni Beskyd a Turzovskej vrchoviny a spája turistické oblasti v katastrálnom území obcí Makov, Vysoká nad Kysucou (SK) a Bílá (ČR). Táto cesta je prakticky využívaná pre pešiu turistiku a zimnú lyžiarsku turistiku a je začlenená v príslušnej sieti turistických trás i zimných lyžiarskych magistrál. Avšak územiu chýba jej začlenenie do siete cyklotrás.Vytvorenie cyklotrasy vznikne vyznačením ťahu pre cykloturistov v teréne po existujúcej lesnej ceste a jej konštrukčnom upravení. Návrh prihliada na pohyb motorových vozidiel a lesnej techniky v danej lokalite. Výsledkom je navrhnutá lesná cesta triedy a kategórie L3,5/20 v celkovej dĺžke 6,19km. V celom úseku je smerové vedenie kvôli CHKO v maximálnom záujme prispôsobené pôvodnej trase a morfológii terénu. Cesta je rozdelená do 6 charakteristických úsekov, v ktorých sú navrhnuté nové konštrukčné vrstvy. Smerové, výškové vedenie a konštrukčné vrstvy sú obsiahnuté v tejto práci.; The aim of this Bachelor thesis is design of cycle track in the section Bumbálka – Hluchanka. Cycle track goes through crest of Beskydy and highlands of Turzovka and connects tourist regions in cadastral areas of villages Makov, Vysoká nad Kysucou (SVK) and Bílá (CZ). This road is practicaly used for hiking in summer as well as for hiking in winter. The road is included in tourist tracks and winter cross country skiing tracks. However, considered area is not included in network of cycling tracks. Cycle track is therefore created by direction marking for cycle tourists in terrain along existing forest road and modification of structural layers. Design counts with presence of motor vehicles and heavy forest machinery in considered location. The result of this Bachelor thesis is design of forest road of cathegory L3,5/20 in total length 6,19km. Horizontal alignment and profile is maximum adapted to the original track and terrain because area is part of Protected area Kysuce and Beskydy. Section is divided in 6 characteristic subsections, where are designed new structural layers. Designed horizontal alignment, profile and structural layers are included in this project report. ▼ As rodovias podem representar um importante fator na fragmentação de habitat para espécies silvestres adaptadas a habitats de alta complexidade estrutural, como as florestas tropicais. As estradas reduzem a conectividade da paisagem e a capacidade da população regional em habitar todas as áreas adequadas e estes efeitos são mais significativos nas espécies que evitam a estrada, que são, muitas vezes, espécies de interior de florestas. A magnitude dos efeitos de barreira dependerá do comportamento e mobilidade destas espécies. Quando as estradas representam ralos (sink) ou barreiras para as populações, devido, respectivamente, aos atropelamentos ou à repulsa, medidas mitigadoras são indicadas para aumentar a conectividade entre as manchas de habitat separadas por essas estradas. A qualidade do habitat é um fator que deve ser considerado, mesmo com baixas frequências de atropelamentos nesses locais. O objetivo desse estudo foi propor dois métodos de seleção de áreas prioritárias para implantação de medidas mitigadoras dos efeitos das estradas sobre espécies de vertebrados florestais: Seleção Hierárquica Multivariada e Seleção Bivariada. A área de estudo foi o bioma Mata Atlântica, sendo recortado em paisagens hexagonais em três escalas diferentes (10.000, 1.000 e 100 km), usando a extensão Repeating Shapes no programa ArcGIS 9.3. Em cada hexágono foram calculados: área de floresta e de Unidade de Conservação, densidade de estradas e de hidrografia. Apenas os hexágonos cobertos por no mínimo 45% pela Mata Atlântica, com mais de 50% de cobertura florestal e mais de 1% de Unidades de Conservação foram incluídos nas análises. Após esta seleção, no método Seleção Hierárquica Multivariada, foi feita uma análise de componentes principais (PCA) com as quatro variáveis medidas, para cada escala separadamente. Os hexágonos foram então ordenados segundo o posicionamento deles no 1 Eixo da PCA de forma hierárquica e da maior para menor escala de hexágonos. Para área de estudo o método de Seleção Bivariada foi construído um gráfico de pontos, para cada escala de hexágono, com as variáveis cobertura florestal e rios. Foram selecionados os hexágonos que estavam localizados no quadrante do gráfico que representasse maior densidade de rios e maior porcentagem de cobertura florestal. Posteriormente foi feita uma simulação para avaliar se os métodos eram capazes de recuperar escores tão alto quanto a ordenação seguindo apenas o posicionamento dos hexágonos no Eixo 1 da PCA, sem uma análise hierárquica. O método de Seleção Hierárquica Multivariada foi mais eficiente para escolha de áreas prioritárias do que a Seleção Bivariada tanto para a escala intermediária (1.000 km) quanto para a menor escala (100 km). Os cinco hexágonos de 100 km mais prioritários estão localizados em São Paulo e Paraná, abrangendo quatro UCs (PARES de Jacupiranga, APA de Guaraqueçaba, APA Cananéia- Jacuípe e PARES da Ilha do Cardoso). ▼ Erosion from forest roads is a known problem in mountainous terrain. To abate these negative consequences, physical Best Management Practices (BMPs) are implemented, sometimes with no knowledge of erosion hot spots. With the need to minimize water quality impacts while at the same time accounting for multiple considerations and constraints, road BMP planning at the watershed scale is a difficult task. To assist in this planning process, a methodology is presented here that combines WEPP: Road erosion predictions with simulated annealing optimization. Under this methodology, erosion predictions associated with BMP options for a segment comprise the objective function of an optimization problem. This methodology was tested on a watershed in the Lake Tahoe Basin. WEPP: Road input data was gathered through road surveys. Modeling results predicted relatively little sediment leaving the forest buffer, as a result of numerous well-maintained BMPs and the dry climate found in the watershed. A sensitivity analysis for all WEPP: Road input parameters is presented, which provides insight into the general applicability of these erosion estimates as well as the relative importance of each input parameter. After evaluating erosion risk across the entire watershed, applicable BMPs were assigned to problem road segments and WEPP: Road was used to predict change in sediment leaving the buffer with BMP implementation at a given site. These predictions, combined with budget constraints as well as equipment scheduling considerations, were incorporated into an algorithm using simulated annealing as its optimization engine. Three modeled scenarios demonstrate the viability of this methodology in reducing total sediment leaving the road buffer over a planning horizon. Of the 173 segments surveyed, 38 segments could be treated using generic BMPs. For all three scenarios, BMP-SA reduced sediment leaving the buffer by as much as 70% over the course of a 20-year planning horizon. For the 38 segments treated with BMPs, sediment was reduced by greater than 90% over the planning horizon. This methodology is a viable approach for streamlining watershed-scale road network BMP planning, despite its heavy reliance on road erosion estimates.

▼ Tropical deforestation is a key process influencing land cover dynamics as well as global climate change. While our understanding of the drivers and consequences of deforestation has grown rapidly in the past two decades, there remain significant debates concerning its estimation, new calls for research on its causation, and growing doubts about its mitigation via public policies. This dissertation therefore takes up these questions by bringing together remote sensing of land-cover, theoretical frameworks for understanding causation behind land cover change, and insights from landscape ecology about forest fragmentation in order to evaluate the estimation, causation, and spatial-temporal aspects of deforestation. I focus on the case of Acre, located in the Brazilian Amazon. Acre is a useful case study because it has incurred deforestation in recent years, but the spatial patterns and temporal dynamics vary considerably. Acre is witness to two key causal factors behind deforestation, new infrastructure and changes in land tenure. Acre also became the focus for a debate within Brazil over competing sources of deforestation estimates as a means of evaluating public policies for sustainable development. Finally, Acre is a global leader in the design and implementation of payments for ecosystem services programs that seek to reduce environmental degradation. The heart of this dissertation resides in three analytical papers. The first takes up the question of the importance of the processing and classification of remote sensing data as they may affect deforestation estimates. I compare three sources of deforestation estimates for Acre and systematically evaluate their processing protocols. The estimates vary considerably, and land cover classification emerges as the main explanation. This bears implications for selecting processing protocols for deforestation estimation to evaluate public policies. The second paper focuses on the issue of the relative importance of infrastructure and land tenure for deforestation trajectories. Both causal factors have large literatures and previous empirical work, but there has been less attention to whether these factors operate independently of each other. I focus on eastern Acre, where the Inter-Oceanic Highway has been paved over time across a mosaic of diverse land tenure types. This permits comparisons of deforestation estimates over time for an array of lands which received paving at different times, exist at different distances from the highway, and have different land tenure rules. The findings show that accessibility and tenure both exert important effects on deforestation, and that the interaction between infrastructure and tenure is not strong as sometimes supposed. However, there is also evidence of rule-breaking, which also bears implications for theory and policy. The third and final paper focuses on the issue of the spatial pattern of deforestation. ▼ This study took place within the Oak Openings Region, a biodiversity hotspot in northwestern Ohio. The Oak Openings was created during the Cenozoic period, a time where glaciers continuously moved across Ohio, creating valleys and riverbeds. When the Wisconsin glaciers melted back from Ohio around 14,000 years ago, waters were released into multiple lakes with sandy beaches. Overtime, these sandy beaches started to became dunes inundated by rainwater that could not drain past the clayey till and bedrock ground layer. Water that would stand between the clay layer and sandy dunes provided moisture to eventually support oak savanna habitat. Between the sand ridges, rainwater would saturate the land, which created open areas of wet prairie (Higgins, 2003; Grigore, 2004). The combination of oak savanna habitat and open wet prairie gave this region the name of “Oak Openings” (Grigore, 2004). Today, the Oak Openings looks quite different as a result of the economic development and agricultural pursuits along the Toledo-Detroit corridor. This area is highly fragmented by roads, agricultural fields and urban/residential development. Roughly 45% of the Oak Openings Region contains urban and suburban development and roughly a quarter of the region has been converted to areas of agricultural production (Schetter and Root, 2011). However, there are still remnants of wild lands that exist west and south of the city of Toledo. This area is Ohio’s largest single surficial sand covering which is 1-12 meters thick and consists of wet lowland and sand ridge terrain with elevations up to 210 meters above sea level. This region is approximately 8 kilometers wide and 32 kilometers long (Higgins, 2003; Figure 1) and contains oak savanna, oak woodland and wet prairie habitats on post glacial beach ridges and swales and covers 478 km2 (The Nature Conservancy, 2001; Grigore, 2004; Schetter and Root, 2011).The Oak Openings Region contains one third of all of Ohio’s endangered plant communities as well as many rare animals and early successional ecosystems. However, only about 10% of the Oak Openings Region is in protected areas (Abella et al., 2007). Early successional ecosystems in this area (e.g. oak savannas and prairies) were historically maintained by disturbances such as fire. Now, these disturbances are mimicked by management activities such as prescribed fires and thinning. In Ohio there are two preserves known as the Oak Openings Preserve and Maumee State Forest, which are the largest protected areas and support many different vertebrate populations and species. However, these two preserves are also highly fragmented by agricultural fields, roadways, railways, and trails that may limit animal movement and increase road mortality. Therefore, it is critical to better understand animal movement and road mortality in this area to promote viable populations, increase our knowledge of vertebrate movement and prevent the killing of vertebrate species by vehicle collisions. V nalogi sem opisala taksonomijo, biologijo in razširjenost srnjadi (Capreolus capreolus), predstavila problematiko povozov srnjadi v Sloveniji in v svetu. Predstavila sem analizo trkov s srnjadjo na cestah in iskala odgovore na vprašanja, kateri okoljski, krajinski in naravnogeografski dejavniki te trke pojasnjujejo. Med letoma 2008 in 2012 je bilo v vseh 15 lovskoupravljalskih območjih (v nadaljevanju LUO) skupno evidentiranih 28.348 povoženih osebkov srnjadi, kar v povprečju predstavlja 5.670 osebkov srnjadi na leto. Največ povozov je bilo zabeleženih med aprilom in majem ter med septembrom in oktobrom. Prek dneva pa je bil višek povozov zabeležen med 4.00 in 8.00 zjutraj. V številu povozov srnjadi obstajajo razlike med LUO. Največji delež povozov je bil v Gorenjskem (13,4 %), Pomurskem (12,9 %) in Ptujsko-ormoškem (10 %) LUO, najmanjši pa v Triglavskem (2,4 %), Kamniško-savinjskem (3,4 %) in Zasavskem (3,7 %). Število povozov srnjadi ni v korelaciji z velikostjo območja (r = 0,32

p = 0,25). V številu povozov srnjadi obstajajo razlike glede na dolžino gozdnega roba, vodotokov, cest in število prebivalcev (p < 0,05). S povečevanjem dolžine gozdnega roba, vodotokov, cest in števila prebivalcev se je povečeval tudi trend povoza srnjadi, povezava je statistično značilna (p < 0,05). Število povozov srnjadi je eksponento naraščalo z večanjem teh spremenljivk. V številu povozov obstajajo razlike glede na naravnogeografske in krajinske značilnosti območja. Območja z največjim deležem povozov imajo naslednjo rabo tal: skupni delež gozdnih, njivskih in travniških površin je na teh območjih presegal 80 % površine. V območjih z najmanjšim deležem povozov pa so gozd in travniki pokrivali več kot 75 % površine. Z večanjem števila povozov srnjadi se je zmanjšal delež gozdnih in travniških površin, delež njivskih površin pa je narastel. Povezave med številom povozov in različnimi vrstami rabe tal nisem mogla posplošiti na celotno Slovenijo. The aim of the thesis is to describe taxonomy, biology and the prevalence of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) as well as problems concerning roe deer traffic collisions in Slovenia and around the world. The thesis contains analysis of roe deer collisions on roads and intents to provide answers to the questions regarding environmental, landscape and geographical factors that explain those collisions. Between 2008 and 2012 in all 15 hunting management districts (HMD) there were a total of 28.348 recorded road-kiled roe deer, which on average represents 5.670 individuals per year. The highest number of road-killed animals was recorded between April and May, followed by the period between September and October. TO ACHIEVE THE AFOREMENTIONED AIMS OF THE RESEARCH, WE GATHERED ELEMENTS FROM SEVEN REGIONS OF GREECE AND AUSTRIA. Σκοπός της έρευνας είναι να βρεθούν τα κριτήρια που επηρεάζουν την διάνοιξη του δάσους, να αξιολογηθούν αντικειμενικά με τη χρήση σύγχρονων μέσων και μεθόδων και να επιλεγεί απο μια σειρά δυνατών λύσεων αυτή που έχει τις λιγότερες επιπτώσεις στο περιβάλλον. Για το σκοπό αυτό αναλύονται οι περιβαλλοντικές επιπτώσεις της διάνοιξης του δάσους. Καθορίζονται τα κριτήρια και οι βαρύτητες των κριτηρίων της έντασης και της απορροφητικότητας απο την ελληνική, διεθνή βιβλιογραφία και γνώμες ειδικών επιστημόνων. Αποτιμόνται τα κριτήρια με αξιοποίηση στοιχείων επιγείων μετρήσεων, φωτογραμμετρικών, φωτοερμηνευτικών και G.I.S. Βαθμολογούνται τα ίδια κριτήρια με αντικειμενική βαθμολογία για κάθε δασικό δρόμο, δηλαδή κάθε κριτήριο που επηρεάζει την επίπτωση βαθμολογείται με άριστα όταν δεν την επηρεάζει καθόλου. Αξιολογείται από μια σειρά εναλλακτικών λύσεων αυτή που έχει την υψηλότερη ποσοτιαία βαθμολογία που ονομάζεται συντελεστής συμβατότητας. Η διάνοιξη του δάσους και οι επιπτώσεις στο περιβάλλον πρέπει να μελετώνται με συνδιασμό μεθόδων. Πρέπει να συνταχθούν ειδικές τεχνικές προδιαγραφές απο το υπουργείο γεωργίας για τη σύνταξη μελέτης περιβαλλοντικών επιπτώσεων για την αποκατάσταση του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος, απο την κατασκευή των δασικών δρόμων, σύμφωνα με όσα δίνονται αναλυτικά στα αποτελέσματα. Σε ευαίσθητες ορεινές περιοχές πρέπει πρώτα να γίνει ο σχεδιασμός σε σχέση με τα κριτήρια που αναφέρθηκαν και μετά η χάραξη του δικτύου δασικών δρόμων.

The aims of this research are to find the criteria which affect the opening up of the forests, to evaluate them objectively with the use of modern up to date methods, and to choose from a list of possible solutions, which would have the least consequences to the environment. So for this reason: The environmental impacts of the opening up are analyzed. The criteria and the weighing up of criteria intensity and absorption of the forest road, by the Greek and international bibliography and knowledge of specialized scientists. The assessment of the criteria, utilizing terrestrial measurements photogrametric photo interpretation assesments and also G.I.S. for every forest road. The same criteria are marked objectively for every road, in other words every criteria, which is affected is marked out of 100 when it is not influenced. Valuation b a list of alternative choices, those, which have the highest protection marks and which are named compatibly efficient in their construction with their environment. The opening up of the forests and the impacts on the environment should be studied by combining methods.Technical specifications should be drawn up by the Monistry of Agriculture, so that the environment impacts assesment will comply with the replacement of the natural surroundings, due to the construction of roads, in accordance with the analyzed results. In sensitive areas, plans which include the aforementioned criteria should be drawn-up, to trace the forest network road system.
