▼ Five experiments were conducted to evaluate tree forage as a feedstuff for small livestock, using the foliage of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and hybrid poplar (Populus spp.). In the first trial, rabbits were fed diets containing 40% alfalfa (control), and 10%, 20% and 40% poplar leaves (PL) from untrimmed or uncoppiced growth, and 10% and 20% PL from trimmed or coppiced growth. At the 20% level, crude protein (CP) was better digested for the coppiced PL than for the uncoppiced (p < .05). No significant difference was evident between treatments in the average daily gain (ADG) or feed efficiency, but dry matter (DM) intake increased for all the PL treatments compared to the control (p < .01). In the second experiment, black locust (BL) leaves were treated by various methods in an attempt to counter the effect of tannins. Rabbits were fed diets containing 50% alfalfa (control), 25% alfalfa and 25% black locust meal (BLM) (BLM control), BLM + 1% polyethylene glycol (PEG), BLM + 1% phytase, and BLM + 0.3% L-methionine and 0.3% choline chloride. In general, nutrient utilization and ADG were better for the control than for the BLM treatments. The addition of PEG increased CP digestibility (p < .01) and ADF (p < .03) compared to the BLM control, partially alleviating the reduced nutrient availability. The addition of L-methionine and choline chloride increased ADF digestibility (p < .02). In the third trial, black locust (BL) bark and other tree products were used to study the possible toxic effects of lectins in BL bark. Rabbits were fed diets containing 25% BL bark, oak sawdust, red alder bark, or red alder sawdust (all diets also included 25% alfalfa). A 50% alfalfa diet served as a control. In general, nutrient digestibilities and ADG were higher for the control than the treatments and, also, higher for the BL bark diet than the alder bark diet. The ADG with the BL bark diet was lower than for the alder bark diet (p < .01), which indicated a possible toxic effect of the BL bark. The fourth trial examined the feeding value of poplar leaves for sheep. Sheep were fed diets containing 50% PL or 50% alfalfa. Nutrient digestibilities were lower for the PL diet (p < .01). In the fifth experiment, BL leaves were fed to sheep and goats in order to determine if goats, being browsers instead of grazers like the sheep, are better equipped to tolerate the anti-nutritive effects from BL forage. Sheep and goats were fed diets composed solely of BL leaves or alfalfa (control). Overall, the nutrient digestibilities were higher for alfalfa than for BL leaves, and there was no difference in terms of digestibility between species. Although the leaves of black locust and poplar contain anti-nutritive factors, it was concluded that the trees have potential as multipurpose trees from which the leaves could be harvested as animal fodder, particularly in temperate areas of the developing world. ▼ In the southeastern United States, there is a need for a native, cool-season grass component for restoring and reclaiming grasslands and providing quality forage for livestock. Experiments were conducted on southeastern wildrye [Elymus glabriflorus (Vasey) Scribn. & C.R. Ball] to assess agronomic parameters, and establish a base of information for use in future research and breeding programs. Optimal germination requirements (temperature, light, pH, and physical dormancy) were evaluated. Our data suggests that for southeastern wildrye, the optimal temperature required for germination is between 15 and 20^oC. Light treatments (constant dark, constant light, short day, and long day) did not influence germination as much as temperature, but can be a limiting factor to stand establishment. Acid source and pH treatments (HCl, H₂SO₄, and H₃PO₄ at four pHs 3, 4, 5, and 7) revealed that southeastern wildrye tends to germinate the greatest in soils with a pH greater than 5.0 (HCl at 66.7%), even though germination was observed in lower pHs. Physical dormancy treatments [bearded/glume intact (control), bearded/glumeless, debearded/glume intact, and bearded/glumeless removed] revealed the debearded/glume intact treatment had significantly less mean percentage germination (43.3%) than all other treatments. Planting depth was evaluated under five treatments ranging from surface planting to a depth of 2.54 cm. For the two years this study was conducted, the 0.64 cm treatment had greater percentage of seedlings to emerge than most other treatments. Forage quantity and quality were measured in three experiments. Orchardgrasses and tall fescue entries outperformed native entries in height, yield, and ground cover ratings. Forage quality analysis revealed statistical similarities between southeastern wildrye and improved, non-native cultivars. Harvest management evaluating cutting intervals (20, 30, 40, 60, and 80-d) and subsequent regrowth for two years was conducted. Quantity and quality analysis indicated that harvests should be conducted every 20 to 30-d in order to maintain nutritional requirements for livestock consumption. Future research should include: identification, selection, and development of southeastern wildrye plants with enhanced forage traits (persistence, palatability, lodging resistance) and establishment characteristics (higher germination, awnless), grazing trials, and fertility response trials. A two-year (2016-2017) field study was conducted at Melfort, Saskatoon, and Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada to evaluate forage production, nutritive value, and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of pea-barley and pea-oat intercrops in comparison to pea, barley and oat monocrops with and without nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Pea-cereal intercrops significantly increased forage DM yield (P<0.001) compared to pea monocrops at all three experimental sites. The barley and oat were dominant (P<0.001) species in the intercrop by accounting for 65-92% of the total DM yield. The lodging resistance of peas improved (P<0.001) in pea-cereal intercropping compared to the monocrop peas. Land equivalent ratio (LER), was higher for intercrops (P<0.002) than monocrops with values ranging between 1.03 and 1.18, indicating the advantages of pea-barley and pea-oat intercropping for using growth resources over monocrops. Pea-cereal intercrops contained similar forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and starch concentrations compared to monocrops of barley and oat, but they had higher (P<0.001) protein yield (PY) and crude protein (CP) concentration. In the intercrop, substantial amount of fixed N transferred from pea to the barley and oat components. The response of monocrops and pea-cereal intercrops to an addition of N fertilizer varied among the experimental sites. At the Melfort site, N fertilizer increased total DM yield (P=0.003), CP concentrations (P=0.021), and PY (P=0.001) of monocrops and intercrops, but it reduced plant lodging resistance by 0.1-2.0 points (P=0.003), and percentage of N derived from atmposhere (%Ndfa) by 22-63% (P<0.001). At the Swift Current site, %Ndfa was reduced by 35-65% (P=0.019) with N fertilization although when other agronomic traits were not affected. There was no significant N fertilizer effect at the Saskatoon site. Overall, this study indicates that intercropping forage pea with forage barley or oat is an efficient system relative to corresponding monocrops to increase land productivity, forage DM yield, %Ndfa, CP concentration, PY, and to improve pea lodging resistance. Effect of N fertilizer application to intercropping was site-specific, and it reduced %Ndfa of pea at two of three sites in the study. ▼ Hard Red Winter (HRW) and Soft Red Winter (HRW) wheat classes (Triticum aestivum L.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) are commonly established as a source of winter and spring forage for cattle grazing in many regions of Texas and the U.S. Southern Great Plains. Small grains used in these grazed systems offer the flexibility of management for season long forage production or production of both forage and grain (dual-purpose). Many commercially available and experimental cultivars are continually evaluated on their ability to produce grain, but little yield data is available on wheat and oats under dual-purpose management systems. In forage production systems, soil fertility management is also an integral component in meeting specific yield goals that producers depend upon to sustain adequate animal performance. Current nitrogen (N) recommendations in Texas are based on heavy, moderate, and light levels of grazing. To address these issues, two-year studies were initiated at three locations in Central Texas. The objectives of these studies were; (1) to evaluate thirty wheat and ten oat cultivars based on forage production and grain yield to identify those best suited to dual-purpose management; (2) to determine winter wheat forage yield potential at varying levels of N fertility; and (3) to evaluate five minimally invasive and non-destructive methods of quantifying forage yield. Results from dual-purpose cultivar evaluations included significant differences in forage yield, nutritive value, and grain yield between cultivars and species. Overall, oat produced less forage than either class of wheat, but Mg content was generally higher in oat. For grain production, SRW performed better under irrigation, but in dryland situations both wheat classes performed equally. We also found that pre-plant N fertilizer significantly reduced stand establishment in dry environments. The 67 kg ha-1 pre-plant N and the 45 kg ha-1 top-dress rates produced the highest forage yield. Nutritive value generally increased as N application rate increased, even when no yield increase was observed. Hand clipping and canopy height both correlated very well with full plot harvest and visual ratings and NDVI had moderate relationships with full plot harvest. The relationship between ground cover and dry matter yield was variable and only weakly correlated. The first study evaluated the efficacy of different water sources and treatment systems on ruminal parameters using an in vitro gas production system. Outcomes of the study suggested that the source and nutrient quality of water can affect rate of ruminal fermentation. Thus, use of real farm water being offered to the cow to conduct in vitro gas production measurements may accurately predict the ruminal fermentation, digestibility and total gas production. The second study evaluated two recently developed leafy-floury corn silage hybrids against conventional starchy corn silage hybrid on performance of early lactating dairy cows. The results showed that all three corn silage hybrids are similar in terms of DMI, milk yield, milk components and 3% fat corrected milk FE. Starchy corn silage hybrid was lower in CP, higher in starch, lower in sugar content, lower in starch digestibility and lower in fiber digestibility compared to both leafy-floury corn silage hybrids. This study demonstrates that a lower starch, higher digestible fiber corn silage diet can support similar milk production compared to a higher starch, lower digestible fiber diet. The third study evaluated intercropping of Vining soybean and BMR grazing corn with different seeding ratios on forage yield, nutrients composition and digestibility. The results showed that monocropping of Vining soybean produced lower DM yield, lower DDM yield, lower NFC yield and lower milk yield (T/ha) compared to intercropping of Vining soybean and BMR grazing corn with monocropping of BMR grazing corn being intermediate. The optimal seeding ratio of Vining soybean to BMR grazing corn is between 67:33 and 50:50 based on yield of DDM and Milk (T/ha). The fourth study evaluated late season row cropping of mixed seeds of corn and soybean with different seeding ratios on forage yield, nutrient yields and digestibility. The result showed that the combinations and seeding ratios of corn and soybean affect the forage and nutrient yields. The greatest yield of nutrients occurred with BMR grazing corn and Big Buck 6 soybean combination at 65:35 seeding ratio. A minimum of 90 d is required to complete the ensiling process of forage before feeding to the cow. The fifth study evaluated the effect of intercropping of MC 5300 corn with Viking 2265 soybean or Vining soybean at different seeding ratios on biomass and nutrient yields under organic condition. The results showed that seeding ratio of MC 5300 corn and Vining soybean or Viking 2265 at 67:33 produced higher fresh biomass yield and dry matter yield. Land equivalent ratio was greater for MC 5300 corn and Viking 2265 soybean combination at 67:33 or 50:50 seeding ratios. Le modèle de Bourgoyne et Young de forage a été appliqué aux données provenant des puits forés dans le champ de Hassi Massoud en Algérie. Le modèle de forage sert à prédire l'effet de huit paramètres de forage xi, sur le taux de pénétration (ROP). Le comportement d'un terrain (type) donné on regard de son forage est modélisé par la sélection de huit constantes ai. La régression multiple a été utilisée pour trouver la meilleure équation linéaire de prévision (modèle) pour un terrain donné. Autrement dit les constantes sont déterminées au moyen de l'analyse par régression multiple des données de terrain. Les auteurs ont effectué leur travail dans la région de côtière du Golfe de Louisiane. Dans cette région les formations sont tendres et sont forées par les outils tricône avec des dents fraisées. Dans l'ensemble, l'écart entre les valeurs observées et calculées est acceptable, il est de 5% à 15%. Des résultats obtenus par l’utilisation des huit paramètres du modèle de Bourgoyne et Young ne se sont pas comparables à ceux obtenus en utilisant un modèle simples à trois paramètres analogues aux relations RWN. Les techniques statistiques ont montré que pour les données analysées, le modèle de Bourgoyne et Young pourrait être réduit à un modèle simple de cinq paramètres sans une perte considérable de la capacité prédictive. Malheureusement, Bourgoyne et Young a recommandé la méthode de régression multiple linéaire pour résoudre ces huit inconnues, mais cette méthode est limitée au nombre de points de données et les limites recommandées pour les paramètres de forage. Résultats de la recherche appliquée deux méthodes ont été comparées l’une à l’autre, et il a été constaté que la méthode de régression multiple non linéaire est la meilleure méthode mathématique pour trouver les constantes de modèle dans de nombreuses situations. Il est facilement d’appliquer pour prédire le taux de pénétration lorsque le point des données est présent et que les paramètres de forage ne sont pas dans les limites recommandées. Enfin, pour optimiser la vitesse de rotation et le poids sur l'outil, ils ont basé leurs travaux sur l'usure des dents, qui à un effet considérable sur la vitesse de pénétration pour les outils ayant des dents fraisées

▼ Barley (Hordeum vulgare) has been largely absent from Texas’s cropping systems with no current public or private breeding program in the state since 2001. However, barley may become increasingly important due to a rapidly growing dairy industry, especially in the Texas Panhandle. For these dairies, barley may provide a more drought tolerant alternative as a cool season silage source compared to other small grains. This would be highly beneficial to the High Plains region due to the depletion of the Ogallala aquifer. Additionally, roughly 1.2 million hectares of small grains are grazed in Texas and barley may offer an alternative source of fall forage for beef cattle. Moreover, barley provides a less desirable host to insects such as Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor), which can be devastating to wheat (Triticum aestivum). The Hessian fly is a major pest of small grains and can cause significant economic losses in some areas of Texas. Small grains intended for grazing are typically planted much earlier in the fall and hence are more vulnerable to Hessian fly damage. Consequently, finding resistant lines is of great importance. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to 1) Identify experimental barley lines with superior forage and silage production in Texas, 2) Screen barley lines for Hessian fly resistance, and 3) Conduct stability, repeatability, and heritability analysis on winter barley lines. Lines examined in this study were previously screened and selected from 298 winter and facultative lines obtained from the Triticeae Coordinated Agricultural Project (TCAP) for adaptation to Texas environments based on disease resistance, vernalization requirements, and frost tolerance. All silage and Hessian fly field trials were laid out in an alpha lattice design with two replications. Forage and silage trials were conducted in College Station, McGregor, and Dimmitt, Texas, during the 2016 season and McGregor, Comanche, Brady, and Dimmitt in 2017. Hessian fly trials were located in McGregor in 2016 and McGregor and Brady in 2017. Normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) and plot height measurements in the fall indicated significant differences (P<0.0005) among barley lines at all environments except for NDVI in two out of six site years. Spring silage dry matter yields revealed significant differences (P<0.05) among barley lines in three out of four site-years. Several of the top yielding barley lines exceeded 15 tonnes per hectare in Comanche, Texas, which was the best producing environment for spring silage. The top producing barley line out-yielded the top commercial barley or wheat check by an average of 1.25 tonnes/hectare across the four locations. Large variation of Hessian fly field trial infestations prevented good separation between resistant and susceptible lines. In a subsequent growth chamber trial, 13% (18 of 140) of the barley lines showed potential resistance. ▼ Cattle consuming low-quality forage may have decreased forage organic matter intake as a result of decreased nitrogen (N) intake. To date, a value has not been assigned to dried distillers' grains as a protein supplement to cattle consuming low-quality Bermudagrass forage. To address this shortcoming in the data, 13 duodenally and ruminally fistulated steers were arranged in an incomplete 13 x 4 Latin square with 13 treatments and 4 periods. Treatments were arranged as a 4 x 3 factorial plus a negative control (NC), which received no supplement. The first factor consisted of 4 levels of supplemental protein provided at 52, 104, 156, and 208 mg N/kg BW. The second factor consisted of one of three supplemental protein sources, cottonseed meal (CSM), dried distillers' grains (DDG), and dried distillers' grains plus urea (DDGU). Total digestible organic matter (TDOMI), and total organic matter intake (TOMI) increased in response to the increasing level of supplemental protein (P <0.01). Similarly, digestible neutral detergent fiber intake (DNDFI) increased as a result of supplementation (P = 0.06). Forage organic matter intake did not increase as a result of protein supplementation (P = 0.20). However, forage organic matter intake (FOMI) responded quadratically to provision of CSM (P = 0.02). In contrast, DDG and DDGU did not significantly increase FOMI. Organic matter digestibility (OMD) tended to increase (P= 0.09) as a result of protein supplementation. Ruminal ammonia concentrations increased linearly in response to increasing provision of supplemental protein and were greater than control steers (P less than 0.01). Supplementation with DDGU resulted in the greatest increase in ruminal ammonia concentrations. Plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) concentrations increased in a linear fashion in response to CSM and DDGU supplementation (P less than 0.01), while provision of DDG resulted in a quadratic response (P = 0.08). Based on these results, DDG can be utilized as a protein supplement to increase TDOMI, however, it accomplishes this without significantly impacting FOMI which is in contrast to CSM. ▼ Eight cecally cannulated Quarter Horse geldings were utilized in a crossover design with two 28 d periods with a 21 d washout period between. Horses were adapted to dietary treatments from d 1 to 19, dry matter intake was determined from d 20 to 24, and cecal fluid was collected on d 28. Horses were paired by age and body weight (BW) and randomly assigned to treatment. Treatments consisted of housing horses individually in stalls or group housed in a dry lot pen. Regardless of treatment, all horses were individually fed a pelleted concentrate at 1% BW (as fed) offered twice daily 12 h apart. All horses had ad libitum access to coastal bermudagrass hay. Hay was offered to stalled horses initially at 2% BW (as fed) then adjusted based on 120% of a previous 3 d average of voluntary intake. A dual marker system was utilized for estimation of voluntary intake in all horses using titanium dioxide (TiO2) as the external marker and acid detergent insoluble ash (ADIA) as the internal marker. Cecal samples were collected 4-h after the morning meal and immediately analyzed for pH. Samples were transported to the USDA/ARS laboratory to enumerate total anaerobic bacteria and lactic acid bacteria, and to determine methane and ammonia activity. Cecal pH was influenced by housing (P = 0.02) with group housed horses having lower cecal pH values when compared to stalled horses (6.52 +/- 0.04 and 6.69 +/- 0.04, respectively). The cecal pH values of this study are similar to other reported values when feeding similar diets (5). Populations of cecal total anaerobic bacteria and lactobacillus were not influenced by housing (P >= 0.21). Treatments did not affect the production of acetate, propionate, or butyrate (P >= 0.15). Additionally, methane and ammonia production were not affected by treatments (P >= 0.17). Forage intake was greater for group housed horses (P = 0.04) than stalled (8.47 +/- 0.89 kg DM/d and 5.17 +/- 0.89 kg DM/d, respectively). In conclusion, confinement housing did not greatly influence the cecal environment of a horse when similar diets were offered. Advisors/Committee Members: Coverdale, Josie A. ▼ In many pasture and rangeland scenarios, low-quality forages (< 6-8% CP) are the primary energy source for some portion of the year. At these times, energy is typically the first limiting nutrient to the ruminant. Low-quality forages are generally not limited in availability; however, the high cell wall content and reduced levels of CP prevent ruminants from being able to extract the harvested energy. Without provision of supplemental nutrients, the available energy may be inadequate to meet performance expectations. Protein supplementation during periods of inadequate forage quality has been observed to alleviate ruminal nitrogen deficiencies and increase forage utilization. Increased forage utilization translates into greater energy extraction allowing for increased animal performance. The first trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of utilizing non-protein nitrogen (a slow-release urea compared to urea) on intake and digestion of beef steers consuming low-quality bermudagrass hay. Steers were provided ad libitum access to a low-quality bermudagrass hay (7.3 % CP and were ruminally dosed once daily with either urea or slow-release urea (SRU) at levels to provide 0, 64, 128, or 192 mg of N/kg of initial BW per day. Additionally, steers were supplemented with glycerol at levels of 0 or 0.1% of initial BW per day. Total OMI and forage OMI (FOMI) increased quadratically (P < 0.01) with NPN supplementation. However there was not a difference in total OMI or FOMI between urea and the SRU (P = 0.24 and 0.21, respectively). The largest increases in FOMI and total OMI occurred with the first level of supplementation (64 mg N/kg BW) for both urea and SRU and intake peaked when 128 mg N/kg BW was supplemented. Total OMD was not affected by N supplementation level however N from urea tended to elicit a greater response than from the SRU (P = 0.01). Ruminal OMD increased linearly (P = 0.07) and ruminal NDF digestion increased quadratically (P = 0.09) with N supplementation. The second experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of hay crude protein and protein supplementation on intake and digestion in beef steers. Steers received one of three bermudagrass (Cynodon Dactylon) hays of differing nutritive value (7.0, 8.4, or 13.4% CP) and either 0 or 156 mg N/kg BW supplemented as cottonseed meal once daily. No significant Hay x CSM interactions were observed for hay OMI, total OMI, TDOMI, or digestible NDF intake (P >= 0.67). Hay OMI and total OMI increased linearly (P < 0.01) with hay nutritive value. A quadratic response (P = 0.03) was observed for TDOMI with increasing hay nutritive value. This response was largely driven by a quadratic increase (P < 0.01) in OM digestion with increasing nutritive value of hays. Supplementing CSM generally did not affect HOMI (P = 0.63) although TDOMI (P = 0.03) was increased. Similarly, OM digestion (P = 0.61) and NDF digestion (P = 0.11) were not impacted by CSM supplementation. Advisors/Committee Members: Wickersham, Tryon A.
