▼ Dundes (1965) and Adams (1973) suggest that folklore validates and maintains conformity or control in or over the society and educates certain aspects of culture and justifies its rituals and institutions, and shows the manner of thinking, mode of life, and attitudes of the society. Hence, the major goal of this study was examining the images of women in Arsi Oromo folktales, folksongs and proverbs. To achieve this goal an attempt was made to collect and analyze folktales, folksongs and proverbs from two districts in east Arsi zone. The data were collected through interviewing people from the study area, using focused group discussions, making observations of the discussions and also using already documented folktales, folksongs and proverbs. The study revealed that images of women in Arsi Oromo folktales, folksongs and proverbs have been portrayed both positively and negatively and that images of women in all the three genres were highly distorted though some positive images also existed. Regarding the positive images of women, some of the Arsi Oromo folktales, folksongs and proverbs have represented some groups of women, for example, wives as faithful, honest and loving; mothers as fair and thoughtful; and female beings in general as wise and problem-solving. There are also some positive representations of women that are manifested only in the proverbs. These are the portrayal of women in general as cautious and suspicious beings; wives and girls as indispensable persons; and mothers as generous. However, the largest parts of the collected folktales, folksongs and proverbs have represented women in a negative and distorted manner. These include the representations of women in general as shameless, selfish and greedy, trouble makers and evil-minded, stupid, and as inferior to men in every aspect; and in particular, wives as unfaithful and adulterous, and step-mothers and co-wives as cruel and jealous. Moreover, some negative representations of women were observed only in the sample proverbs. They include the depiction of women generally as liars, pretenders, deceivers, submissive, quiet and weak, unintelligent, and careless and unreliable, on the one hand, and wives as disagreeable and disobedient, on the other. The other point found out was that images of women in the three genres vary. That is, some positive and negative representations of women exist only in the proverbs but not in the folktales and folksongs. In general, the over all result revealed that the deep-rooted attitude of the patriarchal society that attempted to establish the superiority of men and subordination of women in its oral literature. ▼ Wu-Hsiung Chenï¼b.1945-ï¼is a Kaohsiung local composer. Although he never received any formal music education, he dedicates himself to creating Taiwanese songs. Chen started to compose when he was in his twenties. His early works were piano variations of Taiwanese folksongs. Several years later, he tried to write choral arrangements of Taiwanese folksongs, and he also found the Red Clogs Choir. In recent years, Chen cooperates with many Taiwanese local poets to create nearly one hundred choral songs. Chen hopes his songs could touch the local peopleâs hearts and bring the awareness of Taiwanese language and culture. Chen emphasized, âIf the lyrics cannot inspire me, I will not be able to compose.â Songs are the artistic extension of the poems. The author of this paper has been the conductor of Red Clogs Choir for ten years and worked with the composer since young. She synthesizes the composerâs creative motives, the lyric writersâ reactions with the musical works, and the audienceâs response and chooses eight representative songs written by eight different poets among Chenâs numerous Taiwanese choral songs. The first song, âFour Seasons, Four Sentencesâ, is a joyful panegyric on the four seasons in Taiwan. The second song, âSpring Dreamâ, strongly expresses a young manâs yearning for love. The third song, âEarthquakeâ, emphasizes Taiwanese strong personality no matter how bad they have suffered from severe earthquakes. The fourth song, âBeloved Four-leaved Cloverâ, expresses the anticipation that four main ethnic groups of Taiwan can respect, and benefit from, one another and unite together as a clover. The fifth song, âRatsâ, vividly portrays the old Taiwanese saying: Raise rats to bite your own sacks (which mean being betrayed by those whom you brought up). The sixth song, âNight Scenery of Hsitzu Bayâ, represents the beautiful night view at Hsitzu Bay. The seventh song âTaxiâ depicts the lives of hard-working taxi drivers. Finally, the last song, âTaiwan, My Countryâ, speaks of Taiwanese peopleâs praise and warm feelings for this island. An obvious song-writing style can be found in these eight choral works. There is always a major melody in each song which matches the rhymes of the text. Chen likes to use jumping intervals with rhythmic change when he wants to display passionate, enthusiastic, heroic or spirited feelings. The harmony is generally in traditional Western style. Chen often uses syncopated rhythms to emphasize some lyrics and sometimes adds semitones to change the music color. He likes to use the piano accompaniment. It brings out the atmosphere, provides harmony, and helps the chorus to maintain its Taiwanese rhymes and poetic expressions. This paper consists of six parts: the preface, Wu-Hsiung Chenâs life, Chenâs works, Eight Taiwanese choral songs, the characteristics of Chenâs songs, and the conclusion. ▼ Focusing on interactions between Britain and the US in the field of popular song, this thesis explores the constitutive relationship between discourse, performance, and identity via critical and postcolonial theory. I interrogate how and why nostalgic and essentialising visions of alterity were used to resist mass consumption, global capitalism, and the changes wrought by modernity during the twentieth century. I argue that folk music does not exist outside the discourse of revivalism and is therefore best seen as an institutionalised system of knowledge animating the 'low Other'. Chapter 1, '"Dancing Puppets": Nationalism, Social Darwinism, and the Transatlantic Invention of Folksong', uncovers moments of mediation between 'primitive' cultures and metropolitan elites during the early twentieth century. Employing the idea of gatekeeping, I critique a genealogy of powerful voices including Cecil J. Sharp and John A. Lomax alongside others who persistently challenged their orthodoxies. Chapter 2, '"His Rough, Stubborn Muse": Industrial Balladry, Class, and the Politics of Realism', investigates Marxist visions of working-class culture, showing how ideas of rural authenticity were translated onto urban contexts. Focusing on the BBC 'radio ballads', I argue that industrial folksong was a form of social realism intended as a gendered bulwark against threats posed by Americanisation and postwar affluence. Chapter 3, '"Found True and Unspoiled": Blues, Performance, and the Mythology of Racial Display', explores African American culture, showing how desires written into a revivalist gaze forced artists to assume what I term 'black masks' for the benefit of white male fantasy. Focusing on televised performances, I argue that the semiotics of blues events provide a way of understanding the workings of racial identity itself. I conclude by proposing that what I term the 'folkloric imagination' is a simulacrum brought into existence by ideological fantasy - a manifestation of the colonialist Real.

Miksi näitä riimillisiä lauluja laulettiin Vienassa ja millaisia merkityksiä laulut kantoivat? Tutkimus “Maria Feodorovan laulupolut - Vienankarjalaisen kansanlaulajan repertuaari musiikkisukupolven rakentajana” -kuvaa yhden laulajan lauluohjelmiston avulla riimillisten laulujen esitysyhteyksiä ja laulujen saamia merkityksiä Venäjän pohjoisessa Karjalassa. Tutkimus perustuu kirjoittajan laajaan ja monipuoliseen kenttätyöhön Vienan Karjalassa 1990-luvun lopussa ja 2000-luvun alussa ja yhdeksän muun tutkijan keräämään aineistoon Vienan Karjalasta vuosien 1981–2004 välisenä aikana. Lauluaineiston lisäksi tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään haastattelu- ja havainnointiaineistoa. Tutkimuksen pääkohteeksi valikoitunut laulaja Maria Feodorova (1909–2000) oli poikkeuksellisen taitava ja monipuolinen kansanmuusikko, jolla oli laaja lauluohjelmisto. Feodorovalta tallennettu ohjelmisto sisältää 126 laulua: rekilauluja, lastenlauluja, balladeja, arkkiveisuja, kalevalamittaisia runolauluja ja neuvostoaikaisia populaareja lauluja. Tutkimuksessa kuvataan musiikkikulttuurin muutosta, joka tapahtui tanssimusiikin tultua nuorison suosimaksi musiikinlajiksi. Erityisen suosion nuorison tanssiminen ja sen myötä tanssien säestyksenä lauletut piirileikkilaulut saavuttivat 1900-luvun alussa. Sosialismin myötä syntyneen poliittisen nuorisoliikkeen toiminta Venäjän Karjalan kylissä toi mukanaan uudenlaisia sisältöjä lauluihin. Myös laulujen esityskäytännöt muuttuivat niiden siirryttyä osaksi kerhotalojen ohjelmallista toimintaa. Tutkimuksessa kuvataan lauluja myös musiikkianalyyttisesti. Tehdyn analyysin perusteella näyttää siltä, että riimillinen kansanlaulu ja sen erityistyyppi, rekilaulu, oli varioiva laulumuoto, jota laulajat sovelsivat erilaisissa käyttötilanteissa haluamallaan tavalla. Tanssimusiikin tulo Venäjän Karjalaan vakiinnutti lauluohjelmistoihin riimilliset kansanlaulut. Suomenkielisiä riimillisiä lauluja laulettiin paitsi tanssin säestyksenä kyläjuhlissa ja nuorison kokoontumisissa, myös työnteon rytmittäjinä, vapaamuotoisissa illanistujaisissa ja poliittisissa nuorisokokoontumisissa kerhotaloilla. Myös lastentarhoissa leikittiin piirileikkejä riimillisten laulujen säestyksellä. Laulujen merkitys laulajille oli sidoksissa laulamistilanteisiin, jotka olivat sosiaalisia. Laulupolut -käsite tutkimuksessa kuvaa paikallisen musiikillisen toiminnan muotoja, joihin tutkimuksen kohde Maria Feodorova osallistui. Tutkimuksessa käsitellään myös Feodorovan laulamien kansanlaulujen sisältöjä, joissa kuvastuivat niin paikallisesti tärkeinä pidetyt arvot, kuin sosialismin myötä tulleet uudenlaiset ihanteet. Paikallisia arvoja olivat Karjala kotipaikkana, nuoruus elämänvaiheena ja vienalaisten kokemukset liikkuvan elämäntavan harjoittajina. ▼ Beethoven's folksong arrangements and variations have been coldly received in recent scholarship. Their melodic and harmonic simplicity, fusion of highbrow and lowbrow styles, seemingly diminished emphasis on originality, and the assorted nationalities of the tunes have caused them to be viewed as musical rubble within the heritage of Western art music. The canonic composer's relationship with the Scottish amateur folksong collector and publisher George Thomson, as well as with his audience, amateur music lovers, has been largely downplayed in the reception of Beethoven. I define Beethoven's engagement with folksongs and their audience as the "Beethoven Folksong Project," evaluating it in the history of Beethoven reception as well as within the cultural and ideological contexts of the British Isles and German-speaking lands at the turn of the nineteenth century. I broaden the image of Beethoven during his lifetime by demonstrating that he served as an ideal not only for highly educated listeners and performers but also for amateur music lovers in search of cultivation through music. I explore the repertory under consideration in relation to the idea of Bildung ("formation" or "education" of the self or of selves as a nation) that pervaded contemporary culture, manifesting itself in music as the tradition of Bildungsmusik ("music for self-improvement"). Drawing on both contemporary reviews and recent studies, I show that the music's demanding yet comprehensible nature involved a wide range of elements from folk, popular, and chamber music to Hausmusik ("house music"), Unterhaltungsmusik ("music for entertainment"), Alpenmusik ("music of the Alps"), and even Gassenhauer ("street music"). Within the tradition of Bildungsmusik, adaptation of folksongs for domestic music-making, recomposition of pre-existing materials, collaboration between professionals and amateurs, and incorporation of musics familiar to and popular with contemporaries served as significant means for the composer to communicate with a middle-class audience. The hybrid and flexible nature of the folksong settings was not an awkward mix of various kinds of "trivial" music but rather a reflection of political, cultural, and social phenomena in Europe at the turn of the nineteenth century.
