The purpose of this thesis is to introduce and illustrate some of the deep connections between commutative and homological algebra. We shall cover some of the fundamental definitions and introduce several important classes of commutative rings. The later chapters will consider a particular class of rings, the \emph{fiber product}, and, among other results, show that any Gorenstein fiber product is precisely a one dimensional hypersurface. It will also be shown that any Noetherian local ring with a (nontrivially) decomposable maximal ideal satisfies the Auslander-Reiten conjecture. To conclude, generalizations of results by Takahashi and Atkins-Vraciu shall be presented. Advisors/Committee Members: Alina Iacob, Jimmy Dillies.

Com o intuito de auxiliar o estabelecimento de estratÃgias de um programa de melhoramento genÃtico da qualidade da madeira e do carvÃo vegetal este estudo teve como objetivos: i) estimar os parÃmetros fenotÃpicos e genotÃpicos para as caracterÃsticas da madeira e do carvÃo vegetal, ii) estimar os ganhos genÃticos no processo de seleÃÃo e iii) selecionar clones de Eucalyptus, por meio das caracterÃsticas da madeira e do carvÃo vegetal. Foram utilizados nove clones hÃbridos de Eucalyptus cultivados no municÃpio de Taiobeiras, norte de Minas Gerais. Utilizaram-se toras de 3 m de comprimento para a confecÃÃo dos corpos-de-prova. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 3 repetiÃÃes. Os parÃmetros fenotÃpicos e genÃticos foram estimados a partir dos quadrados mÃdios. Foi estimado o ganho genÃtico para as caracterÃsticas que apresentaram significÃncia. Para as caracterÃsticas de crescimento e propriedades mecÃnicas da madeira, o efeito de clone foi significativo. Exceto para a contraÃÃo volumÃtrica, as propriedades fÃsicas e quÃmicas da madeira apresentaram efeito de clone significativo. O efeito de clone foi significativo para a largura das fibras e a espessura da parede celular. Nas caracterÃsticas avaliadas no carvÃo vegetal, observou-se que o efeito de clone foi significativo para o rendimento gravimÃtrico em carvÃo vegetal, rendimento em carbono fixo e densidade bÃsica relativa aparente. Os ganhos genÃticos obtidos na madeira e no carvÃo vegetal variaram de 4,16% para o rendimento em carbono fixo a 27,58% para a massa seca da madeira. Os clones com maior nÃmero de caracterÃsticas favorÃveis foi o FGA-30, destacando-se nas caracterÃsticas de crescimento, propriedades fÃsicas e quÃmicas da madeira e rendimentos em carvÃo vegetal; o FGA-49, com destaque nas propriedades fÃsicas e o I-380 que se destacou nas propriedades mecÃnicas da madeira. AcrÃscimos superiores poderÃo ser alcanÃados pela hibridaÃÃo desses clones com outros que apresentaram maior taxa de crescimento. Com a seleÃÃo dos clones FGA-30 e FGA-34, foi previsto um acrÃscimo de 53,44m3 na produÃÃo de carvÃo vegetal, o que corresponde a uma receita adicional prevista de R$4.007,95 em cada hectare de floresta plantada.

To help the establishment of strategies for a genetic breeding program for wood quality and charcoal, the objectives of the present study were: i) to estimate the phenotypical and genetic parameters for the wood characteristics and charcoal, ii) to estimate genetic gains in the selection process, iii) to select clones of Eucalyptus hybrids through wood characteristics and charcoal. Nine Eucalyptus clones, cultivated at the region of Taiobeiras, located at the North of Minas Gerais State were analysed. Three meters longs logs were utilized for specimens preparation. In this work, I deal with emergent shapes using deformation.       With this deformation technical element (which in this case are discarded barrels from fiberglass) resulting shapes and curves that give me a basis for further work with the object. So I transform seemingly technical object to object organic. Subsequent stacking barrels on each other and bridging transitions between drums, creates a compact shape and composition of the vertical nature of the organic character.    The vision of this column should be inspired by nature and vegetation. The column should reflect the steady shift and grow. Shapes obtained deformations are related shapes, which you can perceive in nature as such. Subjects/Keywords: V mé závěrečné práci; bych rád předvedl postup; ke kterému jsem se s touto technikou dostal. Implodováním šesti vyřazených sudů od laminátu; vzniklo takzvaných šest dílů skládačky. Jednoduchým variováním; jsem hledal návaznost tvarů mezi barely a začal jsem je stavět na sebe. Jednotlivé spoje jsem svařil; a aby na sebe tvary opravdu navazovaly; potáhl jsem je laminátem se skelným vláknem. Tímto postupem; jsem se dopracoval do výšky zhruba 5; 5 m. Tento rozměr už dělá z věci celkem masivní a manipulačně náročný objekt; který je náročný na stabilitu. Tím jsem na spodní část byl nucen připevnit ocelový kříž. Tento nosný kříž bude pojednán tak; aby nerušil věc jak vizuálně; tak koncepčně. Celý objekt je následně potažen laminátem a skelným vláknem pro zpevnění celého korpusu a pro získání různorodější a hrubší výsledné struktury.; In my thesis; I would like to show the procedure to which I got with this technique. Implodováním six discarded barrels from a laminate formed the so-called six parts of the puzzle. A simple variováním; I was looking for continuity between the barrels and shapes I started to build on each other. Individual welded joints I and shapes so that they really followed; I drew a laminate with fiberglass. In this procedure; I had worked up to a height of about 5.5 m; this dimension it makes things a massive total and handling challenging subject that is challenging to stability. Thus I was forced to the bottom of the mount steel base. This supporting cross will be discussed so as to not disturb the thing both visually and conceptually. The whole object is then coated with fiberglass and glass fiber reinforcement for the entire body and to become more diverse and the resulting coarser structure.
