Family is a place of ambivalence and contradiction. On the one hand, it can be defined as a zone of comfort, mutual aid, affection and above all protection against all kinds of mistreatment. On the other hand, it can be the very centre of abuse and its first source. This shameful violence compels people to silence and therefore often escapes the authorities. Our study aims at unveiling this important taboo, little known at the time. At exposing and explaining the highly antagonistic relationships between the members of a nuclear/conjugal family. Violence takes many forms. It can be physical (blows, injuries, sexual abuse) but also economic (property offences, need, deprivation, deliberate theft) or even moral (psychological hold on someone, insults, debasement). It can also derive from changes of behaviour, which generate conflicts between spouses (conjugal violence), but also between parents and their offspring (parental violence or child violence towards parents). In a city like Paris – and more generally in the Seine department – which claims to be a centre of modernity, a pioneer as regards changes in social mores and ways of thinking, violence is no less obvious. Its way of life and daily obligations affect family behaviours in a significant manner. Added to this is a difficult context: the pre-war period, marked by economic and political crises, then by German Occupation…

▼ [ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] Gatekeeping is a process by which individuals control access to kin. Gatekeeping is facilitative to the extent that others' involvement with kin is encouraged through information-sharing and cooperation; gatekeeping is restrictive to the extent that others' involvement with kin is restricted by withholding information or refusing contact or interaction. Despite recognition that gatekeeping is a dyadic phenomenon that occurs in many types of
family relationships, researchers have largely explored gatekeeping from the perspective of gatekeepers. The experiences of individuals who are gatekept remain unaccounted for. Using a grounded theory approach, this study explored how individuals in multigenerational stepfamilies experience and respond to being gatekept. Data from 15 stepgrandmothers and 9 stepgrandfathers reporting on relationships with 153 stepkin reveal that the type of gatekeeping experienced (restrictive vs. facilitative) varies by gender, personal evaluations and perceptions of being gatekept, remarriage timing, and time spent in the remarried household. As families become increasingly complex in structure and functions, exploring gatekeeping processes that inform how families establish, carry out, and flex their rules, roles, and boundaries can strengthen our understanding of how families come to forge identities that promote relational positivity and stability. ▼ Although interracial marriages are growing more common in the U.S. today, some people still do not approve of interracial marriage, and approval rates likely vary by race and gender. Few studies have examined attitudes toward interracial marriage in recent decades, with the lone exception focusing exclusively on women (Baars 2009). The current research utilized data from the General Social Survey to examine racial (black versus white) and gender-based differences in attitudes towards interracial marriages over a thirty-year period, 1972-2002. Using logistic regression, the current study tested the effects of respondent race and gender – and the combination thereof – on approval toward versus disapproval of interracial marriages, controlling for demographic factors such as region, education level, age, church attendance and political affiliation. Findings show that blacks are significantly more likely to express approval than whites, and men are more likely to express approval than women, controlling for demographics. Also, in terms of race/gender interactions, black men, white men, and black women are all significantly more likely to approve of interracial marriage than white women, net of other factors. Independent of the effects of race and gender, there has been a significant increase in approval over the thirty-year period.

▼ In the United States (U.S.), the birthrates of Biracial offspring have significantly increased among partnered/married White women and Black men. Racial identification has been historically categorized as “either/or” in the U.S. versus “both/and” which can make it difficult for Biracial individuals to racially identify. Prior research has focused primarily on racial identity development among younger Biracial children and youth and has not examined Biracial identity development across the lifespan. Moreover, few researchers have examined the influence of White mothers on their Biracial offspring’s racial identity development and racial socialization process. In order to fill these gaps, this dyadic qualitative phenomenological dissertation study was designed to retrospectively examine the racial identity and parental socialization experiences of eight Biracially identified male and four female adults and their White mothers. This study followed the stages of transcendental phenomenology as described by Moustakas (1994). First a demographic self-report survey was completed (one for the adult child and one for the White mother) and a skin color scale that only adult Biracial children completed. Then, using a semi-structured interview guide eight Biracial adult children (4 females; 4 males who reported lighter skin and between 18 to 42 years old) and their White mothers were first interviewed separately (30 minutes each) and then interviewed together as a dyad. Interviews, emails, and telephone calls were transcribed verbatim; the 24 transcriptions were analyzed using conventional content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005) and MAXQDA to identify dominant themes. During the second stage of analysis, findings were examined through the lenses of Biracial identity development (Poston, 1990), parental racial socialization (Hughes and Johnson, 2001), and Rockquemore and Laszloffy’s (2005) continuum of Biracial identity perspective. The following seven dominant themes emerged for the eight adult Biracial individual interviews: 1) Influence of White Mother on Racial Identity, 2) Colorism, 3) Racial Landscape of Biracials, 4) Views on Race, 5) Preference/Favoring Whiteness – Physical Attributes, 6) How Biracial children Deal with racism and, 7) Acceptance. The following four dominant themes emerged for the eight White mother interviews: 1) What Race is Your Child?, 2) Colorism, 3) Cultural Collision and, 4) Parenting a Biracial Child. The following four main themes emerged for the eight
family interviews: 1) Responsibility and Recommendations for Socializing Biracials, 2) Closeness of Mother-Child Relationship, 3) Colorism and, 4) How the Interracial
Family Functions. Noteworthy, despite reporting a close relationship to their Biracial children, most White mothers did not initiate open discussions about race at home or engage in active parental racial socialization. Biracial adult children described reactive socialization experiences (first racial encounters in the community) and most reported not sharing these experiences with…

▼ Background:
Providing unpaid care for a spouse, partner, relative or friend is a day-to-day reality. Carers in the context of cancer have a similar profile to carers in the UK. Lung Cancer is a low profile cancer but yet is the second most common cancer in Scotland associated with social deprivation, poverty, therapeutic nihilism, and stigma. The significant contribution by carers of people affected by cancer has resulted in their recognition as “partners in the delivery of care”.
Aim:
To explore the experiences of the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer from a carer’s perspective.
Methods:
Unstructured interviews were undertaken with 15 carers of relatives with a lung cancer diagnosis. The individual with lung cancer identified carers. Data were analysed using a qualitative design and analysis in the grounded theory tradition.
Findings:
Analysis of data from the carers indicated that whilst carers are engulfed by the cancer experience and face barriers and deficits of care, they have illustrated and demonstrated that they have their own assets, which are further enhanced by community and societal resources. Five categories were identified and a sense of carer resilience emerged. Subsequently the theory developed was fostering carer resilience in lung cancer care.
Discussion:
Resilience emerged in carers at a time of increasing interest within the wider context of health and social care. Although resilience is not a new concept there are a lack of studies including carers in a cancer context and until now none in lung cancer. Resilience cannot and should not be fostered by one professional group and therefore an opportunity exists for collaboration between agencies involved in the provision of services for carers of relatives with cancer. The limitations of the study are acknowledged.
Conclusion:
The findings from this study have implications for practice beyond healthcare and as Scotland embarks upon health and social care integration it is perhaps an opportune time to develop that. Findings highlighted the potential, strengths, interests, abilities and capacity of carers rather than their limitations. Future research could look specifically at resilience in carers of relatives with lung cancer in addition to testing interventions to enhance carers’ resilience.

The adults who remain with their original families are a multifactorial phenomenon, involving economic, cultural, familial and psychological
factors, which generates discontentment and suffering for those who find themselves in this situation. The objective of this dissertation is the understanding of the motives, intentions and rationales that determine the prolonged stay of adults within their original families. In order to accomplish this, we used psychoanalytical theory both to aid our research design and to inform our analysis of the data collected through our fieldwork. Our interests in understanding how such adults perceive, attribute meaning to and live their everyday lives alongside their original families, and in identifying their perspectives on the future, themselves and their families have built the objectives of this study. We studied this phenomenon via semi-structured interviews with seven middle class adults from the city of São Paulo, aged between 26 and 37 years old, five women and two men, who lived with their original families in 2010. Some themes have emerged from the analysis of the interviews:
family: culture, tradition, history and structure; being an adult; expectations about the future; work and salary:…

▼ Although there is little official data, early girls’ marriage before the age of 18 appears to have increased in Tajikistan over recent years, due to the limited socio-economic opportunities. This study aimed to explore the main causes behind the fall in the age of marriage for girls. As Tajikistan is based on patriarchal values, where family is the core of decision-making, the study looks into the family dynamics and interrelationships to analyse the driving forces behind the decision to arrange marriage for the girls at an earlier age. Using triangulated methods of qualitative data collection, such as interviews, focus group discussions and case studies, the study was conducted in urban, semi rural/semi urban and rural areas of Tajikistan. The findings confirm that early marriage exists in Tajikistan. Although marriage has always been important for Tajiks, recently early age of marriage has been more prioritized. The young girls today leave school when they reach puberty, limit their socialization with their friends outside of the house and rigorously learn skills that qualify them as a ‘desirable’ kelin [bride] to increase their chances of getting a marriage proposal within what is a short marriage window. At the same time, the study argues that the family decision to pursue an early age of marriage for daughters is not because of the low status of the women as it has been suggested in some earlier research. Instead, the study argues that marriage is a strategy to provide girls with what is often the only opportunity of an economically and socially secure future in the country under the current socio-economic and political context. Relations within the families are more complicated than dominant-subordinate as previously portrayed but are based on respect, love and responsibility towards each other. This ‘connectivity’ assists in shaping the girls as potent Tajik women ready for their future roles of mothers and wives. The young girls, as this study suggests, are usually not completely powerless either, as they exercise the limited agency provided by the patriarchal system and actively engage in negotiating their interests. Thus, the study aimed to (1) draw attention to the issue of early marriage among girls in Tajikistan and (2) to contribute to the scholarly discussion on early marriage and on gender and family dynamics in Tajikistan. Based on the findings, it is recommended that more research needs to be conducted to discuss the phenomenon of early girls’ marriage in Tajikistan. Further, legal, political and social changes are necessary to provide a safety net for women married at an early age but divorced or abandoned later. Although bringing changes to the marriage values might be a challenging task, it is hoped that this research and others similar to this one will demonstrate the importance of the issue and will result in appropriate attention and an effective policy response.

▼ Multi-
family businesses represent a rare phenomenon in the
family business environment. With limited research to draw upon and intergroup theory suggesting multiple families that are in business together should be in constant conflict, this dissertation sets out to examine why some multi-
family businesses are able to avoid or manage intergroup conflicts, and how multi-
family businesses can work harmoniously. Utilizing a qualitative, grounded theory-influenced approach, the thesis develops a theoretical understanding that started with the data and then intertwined the empirically derived observations with the extant literature to formulate a model focusing on trust within and between families. The dissertation is structured as follows. First, the introduction will define multi-
family businesses and explain the reason for this dissertation as well as highlighting the contributions of the dissertation. Second, a review of the literature will examine
family business literature, intergroup related literature and trust literature. Third, a detailed explanation is given for the methodology that was used and also how it was used. Fourth, the results are presented by means of a model that emerged from the data with quotations from the data supporting the model presented. Fifth, a discussion is presented comparing and contrasting the results of this dissertation to extant research in the areas of
family business, intergroup
relations and trust. Limitations of this thesis, future research implications as well as some practical applications of this dissertation are also discussed. Lastly, a concluding section briefly recaps this dissertation and its contributions to the areas of
family business, intergroup
relations and trust.

▼ Background: Dementia presents challenges for whole families requiring on-going adaptation. Family relationships provide important benefits, thus understanding the impact of dementia for families is critical to facilitating their wellbeing. Behavioural variant Frontotemporal Dementia (bvFTD) brings specific challenges for relationships, however little is understood about how these are experienced or how families adjust. Aims: This research sought to develop an in-depth understanding of the inter-generational family experience of bvFTD over time. Method: Using a qualitative design, nineteen people were interviewed from seven families, including people living with bvFTD. Interviews occurred over three time points. Narrative analysis and grounded theory were used to understand how relationships are affected and the psycho-social coping processes involved in adjustment over time. Results: Four themes emerged; - Cohesive and connected – distant and disconnected - Challenges to we/ I - Assimilating, adjusting and reconstructing – resisting, denying, being stuck - A changing we / I – an entrenched we / I Results illustrate the influence of pre-existing relationships on family experiences of bvFTD. Challenges to family relationships occurred, including changes in mutuality and increased responsibility. Levels of awareness and understanding, influenced by factors such as proximity impacted upon individual and family adjustment. Assimilating these changes was critical to developing strategies for managing the impact on the relationship and adapting to ‘a changing we’. For closest family members including partners, grief and loss were experienced resulting in the need for a parallel adaptation to a changing ‘I’. Acceptance and adaptation was critical to supporting the wellbeing of the person with bvFTD.

Demographic and epidemiologic transitions influence the Family
arrangements, making the course of life of the families dynamic and leading to intergenerationality. These factors influence several aspects of the life of the elderly, especially their family relations. To assess the family dynamic of the elderly is associated to the lack of studies on the family function in this context. Thus, the objective was to assess the family relationship of the elderly using the family APGAR and the associated factors in a capital city in the Brazilian Mid-West region. This is a cross-sectional, populationbased, epidemiological study which is part of the matrix study carried out by the Rede de Vigilância a Saúde do Idoso (REVISI -Network for Elderly Health Surveillance). The probability sample was formed by 934 elderly living in the urban area of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. Data were collected from November 2009 to April 2010. A standardized questionnaire was applied including socioeconomic and demographic variables, self-referred health conditions, pain, falls,
and access to health services. Scales to measure functional and cognitive capacities were applied. Family APGAR index assessed the family dynamics. Scores 7 refer to Good Family Function (GFF) and scores <7 refer to Family Dysfunction (FD). The outcome variables considered were the family relations and all the other relations considered as predictor variables in the instrument. For univariate association analysis, Chisquare (c)2, or Fischer’s Exact test was used at a 5% significance level. The association magnitude was expressed by Prevalence Ratio (PR) and their respective confidence intervals (CI95%). Multiple logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated to the outcome by building the model with the predictor variables whose p values were 0.20 in the univariate analysis. When we inquired the total sample that answered the index, GFF was associated to age, education, having an income, self-refer health as bad /terrible, pain complaint osteoporosis and
cancer. As for the elderly who referred family dysfunction, high dysfunction was associated to …

Background: 25 000- 30 000 people are afflicted of stroke each year. Incidence of the stroke often occurs suddenly, leaving the relatives unprepared to face their new life as carers for the stroke survivor. Diseases such as stroke whose onset occurs suddenly are not well described in the literature, unlike other diseases that has a slower onset. Aim, The aim of this study was to conduct a synthesis of the knowledge about support for informal carers of stroke survivors in their home environment and to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies included in the synthesis. Method: The analysis was conducted by using meta-ethnography described by Noblit & Hare´s (1988). Findings: Carers for individuals affected by stroke-are sometimes unprepared for how to deal with their everyday lives when the individual affected by stroke is discharged from hospital and returns home in their own homes, they sometimes experience a lack of support from the community. The results revealed four themes, support in social life, support for their own health, support from the outside world, information and knowledge. Conclusion: There is a lack of a professional safety net for the carers, further research that examines support for carers in close proximity after discharge from hospital to home would be valuable. Keywords: Stroke, stroke patients, caregiver support, professional family relations, support; psychosocial, social support, home nursing, family nursing, family, Qualitative studies, experience*,

Changes in the conception of the family are observed, however, its importance for the development of the individual in its psychosocial aspects is undeniable. The family configuration gained diversity and plurality, while the traditional model no longer presents itself as the only group perceived as
family. Given the importance of understanding families more and more, this study aimed to understand the exercise of family function in different settings in the psychosocial formation of adolescents. Three main instruments were used to collect data: a) parental styles scale, with the evaluation of two dimensions: parental responsiveness and demandingness; b) family climate inventory, considering the factors of cohesion, support, hierarchy and conflict; c) structured family interview, to understand the family interactions in its structure. The results showed that the four family systems, with different configurations, exercised their role and function in the formation of the individual and facilitated the promotion of the emotional health of their members, even with differences in their educational practices and family interactions. However, it was the family systems conceived by affective bonds and cohabitation that demonstrated better results in the dimensions and factors studied,
which pointed to more functional family systems.

– – ABSTRACT – – Child depression was recognized only from the second half of the twentieth century. However, it is observed that the literature gives less importance to the study of childhood depression compared with depression in adolescence and adulthood. Considering the importance of the family context to the development and maintenance of depressive disorder in children, the main goal of the present study is to identify and describe the perception of family relations in children diagnosed with a depressive organization, in mother and father, to contribute for a better understanding of family functioning of these children. This study assessed five children diagnosed with depression with ages between seven and ten years old, three children were males and two were females and their parental figures. We used the Case Study method multiple, exploratory and the following instruments: Non-thematic Drawing, Human Figure Drawing (Machover, 1978), Family Drawing (Corman, 2003), Children’s Depression Inventory (Marujo, 1995), Family Relations Test, Children’s Version (Bene, 1985), Family Relations Test, Married Couples’ Version (Bene, 1976), PN Test (Corman, 2001) and also two…

The emotional and behavioral problems in adolescence relate to symptom patterns, which can be divided into two types: internalizing and externalizing. More specifically, internalizing symptoms that are expressed in relation to oneself, characterized by sadness, withdrawal, somatic complaints and fear. This thesis attempts to broaden the understanding of adolescents internalizing symptoms and family relationships. The section I of this thesis includes a systematic review of the literature on adolescents internalizing symptoms and family relationships in national and international databases, between 2005 to 2009. In Section II, it presents an empirical study that aimed to investigate the predictive power of emotional problems and behavior of parents and children, the characteristics of family relationships and stressful events during adolescence to the onset of…

▼ This qualitative study explored the perceptions of effectiveness of a performance review process at one family business. Ten employees across the firm were interviewed in order to describe the process, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and offer suggestions for improvement. Findings suggest that participants understood the process steps and timing, but had less accurate understanding of the process outcomes. Participants generally perceived the process as fair, helpful, and valuable to their development. Noted strengths included the process design and support from direct managers, executive leaders, and the organization. Weaknesses included the lack of structure, poor consistency in ratings, timing issues, and lack of goal alignment. Recommendations include improving the rating system, adjusting the process timing and structure, leveraging evaluation data as a talent management tool, and increasing stakeholder involvement. However, these study findings are considered exploratory, and more research should be conducted to determine how representative these findings are of family businesses.

According to Edmonds and Wilcocks (1995:1-2), South Africa is in the grip of a major drug boom. If this is not taken seriously, South Africa could lose as much as 30% of its future generation in terms of health, happiness, functioning and even life. Drug abuse is an important factor that can affect the quality of life of not only the drug abuser, but also all those connected with them (Edmonds and Wilcocks, 1995:1-2). Substance abuse is a problem that influences the family system. Models such as Bell and Khantzian (1991) and Cooks' (1988) description of the Minnesota model define substance abuse as a disease. This model also known as the medical model, can be attributed to the work of Jellinek (1960). It focuses on individual biological factors with little consideration for familial, social or psychological variables. On the other hand, a family systems perspective indicates that the family system enables the substance abuser towards abusive patterns of behaviour. The family plays an important role in the process of dependency as well as in the rehabilitation process. These models are brought together in the study, as this combination is valuable in understanding the complexity of substance abuse and its effects on the family system. The aim of the study is to explore the families understanding of substance abuse and their role in the treatment process. A qualitative methodology is used to understand the life events, experiences and beliefs of family members, from their point of view. The focus of the research is on family members who have attended the family program at Stepping Stones Rehabilitation Center. Exploring the understanding they have of substance abuse and their role in the treatment process, from their frame of reference. The theoretical basis for the study is formulated within the medical model and a systems perspective. A nonprobability, purposive sample is utilized to seek information rich cases. Eleven respondents are interviewed. Different members within the family system are selected to illuminate the question under investigation. An interview schedule formulated from literature, is utilized to create consistency in the face-to-face interviews. The in depth interviews facilitate exploration. Data is gathered by means of a literature review, field notes and audiotapes transcribed by the researcher. Analysis of the data is done manually according to a schedule. The schedule I developed according to coding categories that are identified when working with raw data. The information from the data gathered is analysed and used to identify themes, which are offered as results. An extensive literature control is conducted, in order to further the validity of the research. From the study, methodological and theoretical conclusions can be made. Methodological conclusions indicate the effectiveness of using a qualitative methodology and face-to-face interviews in exploring the question under study. The theoretical conclusions indicate families understanding of substance abuse and their role in the…

▼ A collection of short stories allows a writer certain freedoms that the novel form does not. It enables the writer to explore different ideas of form, content, and voice in a limited amount of space, looking at small slices of life that should hopefully add up to more than the sum of its parts. As such, this collection of stories attempts a variety of structures and styles. The view points range between first person to third person, and the main characters vary in gender and age, letting the voices of an 13 year old country girl in "What You Can't Leave Behind," and a man in his early 30's living in the city in "The Sun and Death" stand next to each other, among others. These stories are most simply connected through the idea of exploring the way people relate to one another, and especially how families interact, in this often chaotic world.

▼ Family members significantly influence dating behaviors and their support is instrumental for a healthy relationship (e.g., Wang et al., 2006). Although many interracial couples report family disapproval of their relationship (e.g., Inman et al., 2011), few studies have asked family members directly about their attitudes towards these couples. We asked three-hundred twenty-nine White participants how they feel, what they think, and how they would behave towards a couple consisting of either their brother or their sister with a White, Black, or Asian partner. Results revealed that participants’ level of internal motivation to control prejudice (IMS) consistently moderated perceptions of interracial couples. Specifically, high levels of IMS were associated with positive affect, beliefs, and behaviors towards White siblings dating a non-White partner. The findings suggest that IMS may be key in understanding how individuals perceive interracial couples involving a family member.

ABSTRACT
When enter the school, the child is subject to the interaction established between the two socializing agents that will follow throughout its development: the school and the family. It is therefore crucial that this relationship is harmonious in order to be beneficial to each student.
Due to the plurality of situations that may arise in establishing social relationships, it becomes important to understand the conceptions that prevail in society and what is most valued by stakeholders in this relationship.
Based on this assumption a small study on the conceptions of a teacher and a small sample of parents of students in a Primary School in the city of Lisbon was developed.
This study was conducted among a group of the 1st year of schooling as part of the Course Unity (UC) of Supervised Practice and Teaching II (PES II) the result of which is presented in this report.
In the report we realize the whole process of characterizing the socio-educational context and the consequent definition of intervention goals, problematic, guiding principles and intervention strategies.
Along the route that involved the intervention with this group of…

▼ Recent studies have suggested that there is a relationship between treatment outcomes and baseline factors related to
family functioning and specific eating disorder symptoms. However, these relationships have not been studied extensively within a pediatric population hospitalized for treatment. Therefore, it is unknown whether these relationships exist within an acutely ill population and whether these baseline characteristics improve significantly immediately following acute hospitalization. Given these limitations, the aims of the present study were to identify aspects of
family functioning and eating cognitions and attitudes at admission that predict outcome at discharge, and evaluate what aspects of
family functioning and eating cognitions and attitudes improve during an acute treatment period. The sample consisted of 41 patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or eating disorder not otherwise specified between the ages of 10 and 17 years. At admission, all patients were administered a structured clinical interview to obtain valid psychiatric diagnoses. Additionally, patients completed self-report measures of eating cognitions, eating attitudes, and
family functioning; while parents completed a self-report measure of
family functioning. Families also participated in a standardized clinician-rated observational measure of
family functioning. All measures were re-administered at discharge, and the patient's body mass index (BMI) at admission and discharge were obtained from the medical record. The attrition rate from intake to discharge for this study was 26.8%. Overall, it appeared that parents and patients perceived their families to be healthy at intake, with little improvements noted over the course of treatment. However, standardized observations characterized these families as being affectively avoidant. Additionally, parental perception of adaptive
family functioning at intake was predictive of outcome based upon the unit psychiatrist's assessment, and patient perception of healthy familial Expressiveness at intake was predictive of outcome based upon pathological eating attitudes. BMI and eating attitudes based upon eating behavior during treatment improved significantly over the course of treatment. However, patients continued to endorse unhealthy eating cognitions at discharge. These results suggest that weight restoration and pathological eating behavior are the first symptoms to improve during an aggressive treatment period, and psychological symptoms may require a longer period of treatment to remit.

▼ Introduction: Coordination among primary health care professionals plays a key role in providing high-quality and effective primary health care. The WHO strongly recommends that pharmacists and general practitioners collaborate at this level.
Both community pharmacists and general practitioners are professionals who often share the same patients and objectives.
A number of studies have shown that collaboration between these professionals leads to improved results in community health. Findings also indicate that a lack of communication between them affects the patient's security and causes avoidable health problems. However, collaborating is still not common practice in the Spanish health system. Some previously conducted qualitative studies show that there are several factors which favour or hinder collaboration, but because of existing differences they are not applicable to Spain.
Objectives: The main objective of this study is to identify and analyse the primary and secondary factors affecting communication and collaboration between community pharmacists and practitioners in Spain from their perspective. The secondary objectives are to explore the differences between professional collectives, between Autonomous Communities and between professionals with and without experience in collaboration, and to evaluate how useful this collaboration is perceived to be.
Methods: This study is based on qualitative exploratory-descriptive and semi-structured multicentre face-to-face interviews conducted with primary health practitioners and community pharmacists – both with and without experience in collaborating – based on two Autonomous Communities: Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
Findings: A total of 37 interviews with 19 pharmacists and 18 practitioners were conducted.
The factors affecting collaboration depend on the collaboration phase. Four key factors with an impact on the initiation of collaboration were identified: perceived usefulness, interest of the head of the primary health care team, the professionals' attitude, and geographical as well as legal conditions. Once successfully set up, the continuity of a collaboration appears to depend on two factors: the fulfilment of objectives and changes in the management of the primary health care centre.
Attitude-related factors were the most relevant for professionals. Those with a background in collaboration provided more data and information about facilitators. In turn, those without experience provided more information about barriers and difficulties.
No significant differences between the stratified segments were observed. The differences between Autonomous Communities are due to divergent management approaches within the primary health care teams.
Primary health practitioners and community pharmacists expressed similar opinions regarding the majority of these key factors with some differences specific to each professional collective, e.g. regarding conflicts of interest which are specific to each professional group.
All participants of both professions…

▼ The aims of this thesis are to investigate the factors influencing treatment fidelity of health behaviour change (HBC) interventions. The thesis will focus on HBC interventions delivered by practice nurses (PNs) and health care assistants (HCAs) to patients within general practice, although the findings will be explored within the context of the wider treatment fidelity literature. The thesis comprises five studies, focussed on exploring, enhancing and assessing fidelity of delivery and receipt of HBC interventions. Through developing an enhanced understanding of these areas of treatment fidelity, the thesis will also make recommendations for strategies to enhance and assess fidelity of delivery and receipt of future HBC interventions. Study one is a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies that explored the views and experiences of nurses who had delivered HBC interventions with a focus on how this can inform future delivery of HBC interventions. Study two is an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of PNs’/HCAs’ experiences of helping patients to change their health behaviours within the context of their routine care, and before and after delivery of an intervention to facilitate increased walking. Study three reports a quantitative assessment of delivery of intervention techniques to facilitate increased walking, as specified in an intervention protocol, by PNs/HCAs. Study four explores PNs’/HCAs’ views and experiences of the factors that influenced their delivery of the walking intervention. Study five investigates treatment receipt, by exploring patients’ understanding of, and experiences of receiving the walking intervention. The key findings from this research are that delivery and receipt of HBC interventions within general practice are influenced by a range of factors that include the providers’ confidence and skills, the patients’ expectations and/or engagement with the intervention and the general practice within which the intervention is delivered. A number of these factors are difficult to influence and so research teams need to develop a range of strategies to enhance delivery and receipt of HBC interventions. These may include appropriate preparation for providers to deliver the intervention, the provision of a simple intervention resource to support delivery of the intervention and the development of strategies to enhance patients’ understanding of intervention techniques.

▼ This thesis follows a paper based format where papers 1 and 2 are stand-alone papers prepared for submission to the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. The relevant submission guidelines are included in the Appendix. Paper One: The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the effects of family-centred interventions for children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes and review the bias associated with included studies. The review summarises the outcome measures which consisted of HbA1cs, hospital admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), adherence, and family relationships including diabetes-related conflict. Research studies that were randomized controlled trials were selected to maximise the quality of information reviewed. Electronic searches of the OVID database using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched from their start dates until May 2012. Nine studies were located and assessed with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Two studies were excluded from further analysis due to serious concerns about bias of their results. The remaining 7 had their findings summarised in a narrative statement, which indicated that family-centred interventions significantly improved HbA1cs, reduced DKA admission rates, improved adherence, and enhanced family relationships including reduced conflict. Family-centred interventions appear to be effective in enhancing health and psychological outcomes. The interventions however, were mainly in clinical settings and delivered by trained professionals. Given the importance of the family relationships in diabetes control, a need exists for interventions to have a more flexible setting and method of delivery, remain viable and demonstrate sustainability. Paper two: Clinic based interventions in type 1 diabetes have shown improvements in family relationships and metabolic control, but have limited reach. Therefore, a self-directed intervention was evaluated. Recruitment occurred through national advertising with diabetes charities, and the randomized controlled trial was conducted via online data collection. Parents of adolescents (aged 11-17) with diabetes were randomized to usual care (n = 37) or intervention (n = 42) using computerised block randomization, with researchers blinded to block size. The 10 week intervention involved the Self-directed Teen Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) workbook (10x1hour modules) and Chronic Illness tip sheet. Primary outcomes of diabetes-related family conflict and parenting stress were assessed pre and post-intervention. Intention-to-treat analysis was undertaken (n = 79), due to increased attrition from the intervention group. Intervention significantly improved diabetes related conflict, but not parental stress, compared to usual care. Followup analyses will assess maintenance effects and impact on metabolic control. Paper three: This paper was a Critical Evaluation, the purpose of which was to consider the findings from both papers, highlight additional and unexpected outcomes, place the research in the wider context, explore…
