This project report describes the process of the development of an evaluation process for family exhibitions in the Maritime Museum Rotterdam. It is focusing on collecting qualitative feedback from families, consisting out of children between 8 and 12 years old and their parent or grandparents. The Maritime Museum Rotterdam has various interactive exhibitions which learn their visitors about the maritime world. The museum was looking for a way to get qualitative feedback from their visitors about these exhibitions. The museum wants to learn what contributes to or deducts a positive experience of their exhibitions, so they can create even more inspiring exhibitions in the future. The assignment for this project is to design a tool-box, containing all elements needed to conduct a successful qualitative evaluation of a family exhibition. The Sea monster exhibition in the Maritime Museum was chosen to be a test-case for this project. During the project, several methods for gaining feedback were explored. It was decided to build an evaluation process around the concept of a heat-map which shows what areas visitors do or don’t like. The method that was chosen to collect the data to create the heat-map is experience sampling. During the exhibition visit, visitors are asked to give a small sample of feedback. They can do this by pressing a smiley that indicates how much they like what they are doing or seeing at that moment on a special developed tracking device. This device also keeps track of the location of the visitors. A line, showing the route of the visitors and the given feedback samples will be created from this information. For this concept, a framework of the evaluation process was created. In this framework, two tracks were distinguished. One track, called version 1 in this project, collects the route and feedback samples of over a hundred visitors. An interactive stand will ask automated questions based on this data. The other track, called version 2 in this project, only involves five families. A heat-map is created for each family member and based on the heat-map an interview is held. A process poster was developed which shows all steps of both tracks. However, the focus during the project was on this last track, version 2. The tracking device (the tool), the interview, and the analysis and communication of version 2 were developed further. Several tests were done to find the characteristic the portable tracking device should meet to collect the right data to create a heat-map that can be used to structure the interview. In the final design, a working prototype of the tracking device was created. Besides that, an interview guide was developed containing all information needed to conduct an interview, based on the heat-map. Lastly, all steps of the analysis and communication were distinguished and finding-cards were designed To validate the concept, various tests were done to evaluate the evaluation process.

▼ Much of what is known about the stability of Vocational interests is from a between-person perspective (e.g., rank-order stability). This dissertation investigates the within-person variability of vocational interests. Three studies employ experience sampling methods to assess the daily fluctuations of RIASEC interests. These studies make three main contributions. First, I apply a whole trait perspective to understanding interests: interests can be stable at the between-person level yet vary at the within-person level. In so doing, I examine whether the within-person operationalization of interests affects the nomological relationship within interest domains (i.e., structural validity) and with personality traits of extraversion and openness. This analysis provides evidence that conceptualizing vocational interests as a density distribution is a viable and appropriate way of assessing a person’s interest. Second, G-theory is advanced as a better, more nuanced, and precise method of variance decomposition compared to other methods of variance decomposition. Beyond parsing variance into within- and between-person, G-theory estimates variability that arises due to differences in item selection and administration. Finally, I investigate a potentially better test of Holland’s (1997) congruence hypothesis. Rather than the current approach that matches individuals’ RIASEC activity preferences to their occupation (which consists of a heterogeneous mix of activities), I investigate the daily measurement of individuals’ RIASEC activity preferences matched to the daily work activity they actually do, an activity-interest congruence. Overall, results show that applying whole trait theory to vocational interests is an appropriate operationalization of interests that does not contradict what is currently known about interests at the between-person level. Rather, vocational interests exhibit non-trivial levels of within-person variability across all three studies. Results did not support the ESM test of the congruence hypothesis. ▼ Experience sampling methodology (ESM) is a real-time data capture method that can be used to monitor symptoms and behaviours as they occur during everyday life. With measures completed multiple times a day, over several days, this intensive longitudinal data collection method results in multilevel data with observations nested within days, nested within subjects. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the optimal use of multilevel models for ESM in the design, reporting and analysis of ESM data, and apply these models to a study in people with psychosis.A methodological systematic review was conducted to identify design, analysis and statistical reporting practices in current ESM studies. Seventy four studies from 2012 were reviewed, and together with the analysis of a motivating example, four significant areas of interest were identified: power and sample size, missing data, momentary variation and predicting momentary change. Appropriate multilevel methods were sought for each of these areas, and were evaluated in the three-level context of ESM.Missing data was found to be both underreported and rarely considered when choosing analysis methods in practice. This work has introduced a more detailed understanding of nonresponse in ESM studies and has discussed appropriate statistical methods in the presence of missing data. This thesis has extended two-level statistical methodology for data analysis to accommodate the three-level structure of ESM. Novel applications of time trends have been developed, were time can be measured at two separate levels. The suitability of predicting momentary change in ESM data has been questioned; it is argued that the first-difference and joint modelling methods that are claimed in the literature to remove bias possibly induce more in this context. Finally, Monte Carlo simulations were shown to be a flexible option for estimating empirical power under varying sample sizes at levels 3, 2 and 1, with recommendations made for conservative power estimates when a priori parameter estimates are unknown. In summary, this work demonstrates how multilevel models can be used to examine the rich data structure of ESM and fully utilize the variation in measures captured at all levels. ▼ The role of positive affect and happiness in depression and vice versa is the subject of a growing tide of scientific research. Although a deficit in positive feelings – anhedonia – is the hallmark of depression, the mechanisms underpinning the interaction between depression and happiness are yet to be clearly understood. Dysphoria, or sub-threshold depression, is a prevalent and growing concern particularly among young people, and emerging research suggests that it is associated with biases in positive emotion processing and regulation, which may foreshadow the development of a clinically significant disorder. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of dysphoria in the predictions, experience, and memory of everyday happiness in a young adult population. One hundred and sixty university students aged between 17 and 30 were asked about their general happiness and to predict their level of happiness over an upcoming two weeks. They were then asked to rate their level of happiness several times per day for two weeks, to recall their levels of happiness and, finally, to make predictions about their future happiness. Participants were assigned to a high-dysphoria and a low-dysphoria group based on their scores on a measure of depressive symptomatology. Results showed that dysphoria was associated with dampened predicted, experienced, and remembered happiness, diminished memory-experience and prediction-experience gaps, significance of troughs in predicting memories, and more cognitive-based rather than experience-based memories of happiness. Overall, the findings imply that significant deficits in positive feelings, spanning beliefs, experience, memory, and anticipation of happiness are evident in sub-threshold depression, and this pattern of deficits may contribute to the maintenance of lower happiness in dysphoric individuals, which may put them at risk of poor physical and psychological outcomes. ▼ Parents and educators seek to guide students with visual impairments (VI) so they develop a robust sense of identity as they work alongside, and compete with, their typically-developing peers at school. In this study I explored the social inclusion of 12 Australian high school students with VI. I wanted to know how they described school social inclusion, whether they felt included, and what influenced these feelings. Seven times a day for one week, these participants responded to the same in-the-moment survey about the activity in which they were engaged. A questionnaire, the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM), and an interview complemented these data. Despite as a group scoring highly on the PSSM, in-the-moment survey data revealed participants felt less accepted and fitted less at school than out of school. The presence of an additional disability significantly increased loneliness and negatively influenced PSSM scores, fitting in and enjoyment at school. In interview, participants described school social inclusion as being noticed by others. Four participants, including all with additional disabilities, had experienced peer exclusion. Five themes encompassed the influences on school social inclusion. These were: (a) putting myself forward; (b) knowing me; (c) having control; (d) having a place to shine; and (e) peer exclusion and rejection. These themes align with the needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness articulated in self-determination theory, a theory of motivation. This linking of school social inclusion and motivation suggests students with VI will put effort into engaging with, and feel included in, high school if activities and interactions fulfil their needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness. This link also requires closer scrutiny of the influence of school environment on social inclusion and motivation. Future research is needed to determine if this link applies more widely, to adolescents with impairments other than vision.

▼ In dit onderzoek staat stress bij hoog opgeleide moeders centraal. De overheid in Nederland stimuleert vrouwen om aaneengesloten te blijven werken tijdens hun hele werkzame leven. Daarnaast wil de overheid ook de kosten van de gezondheidszorg verlagen. Stressgerelateerde klachten nemen een groot deel in van de kosten van de gezondheidszorg in beslag. Na de geboorte van hun eerste kind moeten vrouwen de keuze maken al dan niet terug te keren naar de werkvloer. Onderzoek naar de relatie tussen de arbeidsdeelname van moeders en de door hen ervaren stress en stressreactiviteit is dus maatschappelijk relevant. Dit onderzoek gaat in op de verschillen in stress en stressreactiviteit bij werkende en thuisblijvende moeders. Er hebben 13 werkende en 13 thuisblijvende moeders meegedaan tussen de 30 en 47 jaar, allen met een opleiding op Hbo-niveau of hoger. De moeders zijn geworven in het sociaal netwerk van de onderzoekster. Het aantal werkuren van de deelnemende werkende moeders ligt tussen de 12 en de 50 uur. Alle moeders hebben een partner en kinderen onder de 12 jaar. Er is onderzoek gedaan door middel van de Experience Sampling Methode, een gestructureerde dagboekmethode, waarbij ervaren stress (in de contexten activiteit, sociaal en event) en negatief affect gedurende zeven dagen tien keer per dag gemeten werd. Het design van het onderzoek is cross-sectioneel. De belangrijkste bevindingen uit het onderzoek liggen in het feit dat de werkende moeders die hebben deelgenomen aan het onderzoek meer activiteit- en sociaal gerelateerde stress rapporteren dan de thuisblijvende moeders. Daarnaast is bij de werkende moeders de stressreactiviteit bij de activiteit,- en de event gerelateerde stress sterker dan bij de thuisblijvende moeders. De deelnemende thuisblijvende moeders rapporteren in geen enkele context de meeste stress en een minder sterke of gelijke relatie tussen stress en negatief affect. Gezien de risico's van stress op de lichamelijke en geestelijke gezondheid wordt vervolgonderzoek naar de oorzaken van de stressbeleving bij werkende moeders aanbevolen.

College counseling centers are struggling to meet the growing psychological demands of undergraduates. Research has demonstrated that self-compassion-based interventions can improve psychological well-being, and that such benefits may be especially fitting for students adjusting to the strains of college life. Mobile technology, now nearly ubiquitous among undergraduates, presents a unique opportunity to reach students in the course of their daily life, and thus, to help augment outcomes associated with psychological interventions. In this randomized controlled trial of a novel self-compassion intervention, participants were assigned to one of three conditions: 1) ESC, a 3-week self-compassion workshop supplemented with text messages related to self-compassion (n = 27); 2) NSC, an identical self-compassion workshop without supplemental text messages (n = 28), and; 3) WC, waitlist control (n = 25). All participants received a link on their smartphone each day to a 14-item internet-based questionnaire assessing Mood, Positive Affect, Negative Affect, Self-Criticism, Sleep Quality, Sleep Quantity, and Exercise Quantity. Data were analyzed using Multilevel Modeling. Contrary to study hypotheses, there were no significant differences between conditions in the trajectories of any outcome variables. However, ancillary analyses revealed that participants in the self-compassion interventions experienced significant improvements in Mood, Positive Affect, and Negative Affect, while participants in the Waitlist Control group only experienced increases in Sleep Quantity. Results highlight the potential utility of brief self-compassion interventions to improve day- to-day mood and affect in college students. More research is necessary to determine how to successfully augment brief interventions through mobile technology.

Social dysfunction is a hallmark of schizophrenia and leads to significant disability and distress. Decreased positive and increased negative affect predict poorer social functioning in those with schizophrenia. Social functioning and affect have traditionally been measured in the laboratory; yet, these methods are limited. Experience sampling methods (ESM) offer more immediate, ecologically valid assessments of these constructs. The purpose of this study was to examine social functioning and affect in schizophrenia using a novel form of ESM that passively collects audio data. The two primary hypotheses were: 1) clinical status (schizophrenia versus control) will predict social functioning, level of positive affect, and level of negative affect; and 2) the relationship between clinical status and affect will be moderated by context (social versus non-social). Additional exploratory aims tested the convergent validity between traditional, laboratory-based assessments of social functioning and this novel ESM. Data was collected from 38 people with schizophrenia and 36 control participants; Results partially supported the hypotheses. As expected, laboratory measures of social functioning revealed that those with schizophrenia performed worse than controls. ESM measures of social functioning found that the schizophrenia group interacted with others at the same rate as the control group but did not exhibit as much social engagement. ESM measures of affect revealed the schizophrenia group reported more negative affect than controls, but no differences in positive affect were found. Social context did not moderate the relationship between clinical status and affect. Lastly, correlations between laboratory measures and ESM measures of social functioning were significant for the schizophrenia group but not the control group. Results further our understanding of social functioning and affect in those with schizophrenia and yield important implications for future work.

▼ Meta-emotions are emotions that occur in response to other emotions (e.g., guilt about anger). Although preliminary evidence indicates that depression is associated with a greater likelihood of meta-emotions, much remains unknown about meta-emotions, including how regularly they are experienced and whether emotional awareness constructs (including attention to and clarity of emotion) influence their occurrence. In the present study, we aim to establish norms for meta-emotions in everyday life, determine whether increased emotional awareness is associated with a greater likelihood of meta-emotions, and examine whether negative emotions about negative emotions (negative-negative meta-emotional experiences) are associated with depressive severity. We recruited an adult community sample (n=79) to complete seven days of experience sampling. At each survey, they indicated current attention to emotion, clarity of emotion, and whether and what kind of meta-emotional experience they were having. Experiences were categorized as negative-negative, negative-positive, positive-positive or negative-negative. Approximately 53% of participants reported at least one meta-emotional experience. Meta-emotional experiences were reported about twice a week; negative-negative experiences were most frequent. Although attention to and clarity of emotion each individually predicted the likelihood of meta-emotional experiences, only attention to emotion contributed unique variance. Using multi-level modeling, we found that higher self-reported depressive severity was associated with the likelihood of meta-emotional experiences and specifically with negative-negative experiences. Findings indicate that most adults experience meta-emotions, especially during moments of high attention to emotion, and that negative-negative experiences are associated with depressive severity. These findings suggest that treatments for depression would benefit from emphasizing acceptance of negative emotions. ▼ Every day, employees experience moments where they must decide how much of their private lives they want known to others. Sometimes, these moments are triggered by questionnaires from their company or organizational researchers. Other times, these moments come in the form of break room conversations. In all these moments, employees face the dilemma of how much personal information to share. Traditionally, the disclosure of personal information has been treated as self-initiated behavior. However, it is unclear how employees respond when others prompt them to share information considered private. To investigate this phenomenon, I first conducted an inductive study to identify the characteristics of workplace conversations about personal information. Second, drawing from the identity management, privacy, and stress appraisal literatures, I used an experience sampling methodology to examine how employees interpret and respond to these conversations. I recruited from across the United States 128 full-time employees who completed daily surveys over 16 workdays. Findings showed that conversations pertaining to sacred (i.e., meaningful) topics were more likely to elicit revealing responses, whereas conversations pertaining to out-of-bounds (i.e., inappropriate) topics were more likely to elicit concealing responses. Findings also showed that revealing responses were more likely to have positive relational outcomes, but concealing responses were more likely to have negative emotional and cognitive outcomes that persisted throughout the day. This research extends theorizing about identity management by examining reactive forms of disclosing information and expanding the conceptualization of what kinds of personal information employees are likely to protect. It also extends workplace privacy research by investigating interpersonal and informal requests for personal information. Further, this research has practical relevance as it indicates that managers should monitor and influence appropriate norms surrounding personal conversations in order to foster team building and avoid emotional and cognitive distractions.

▼ The development of the classification systems of psychiatric disorders illustrates a long-term debate on whether a discrete and categorical or a continuum and spectral view best describes psychiatric disorders. This is because comorbidity between mental disorders is common and the symptoms of the same psychiatric disorders are heterogeneous. These all increase the difficulty to diagnose and to treat mental disorders. Generally, the diagnostic systems have attempted to develop diagnostic criteria of psychiatric disorders that resemble a solid medical model, where each disorder is described by a discrete category of symptoms. However, these attempts have been plagued by problems. Even though having a categorical classification system makes diagnoses easier than having nothing to work from, a categorical classification system cannot explain clinical conditions. Having alternative classification systems such as one based on dimensions (spectra) or a mixture of categorical and spectral classification systems may be better than using either classification system alone. It has been suggested that a mechanistic property clusters (MPC) would be a suitable alternative (Kendler et al., 2011). The MPC described psychiatric disorders are caused by multi-level causal loops and interactions. A similar view of symptoms forming a causal network – the network theory – has been advocated (Borsboom, 2008, 2017). The network theory hypothesizes that the present psychiatric symptoms are caused by the same and/or other psychiatric symptoms occurred earlier. This PhD project investigated the heterogeneous nature of the symptoms of major depression (MD) by using their repeated measures in daily-life settings in three studies. We used on-line questionnaires, mobile questionnaires, and activity sensors. MD symptoms at the moment were measured using mobile questionnaires and daily physiological signals were recorded using activity sensors. The on-line questionnaires were administered before and after the participants completed the momentary questionnaires. Study 1 measured the momentary MD symptoms using Android devices, Study 2 was a replicate of Study 1 and iOS devices were employed in Study 2. Study 3 measured the momentary MD symptoms and activity levels using Android and iOS devices and activity sensors. Study 3 was a replication of Studies 1 and 2. The replicability of the results across the three studies was tested. Meta-analysis was used to see whether there were similar patterns across studies. In addition to the network theory, discriminant and convergent validity of the mobile and retrospective MD assessments were tested. The heterogeneity of MD symptoms was examined in the relationships between momentary MD symptom ratings and controlling factors (i.e., age, gender, employment status, marital status, educational level, MD severity, circadian rhythm, personality traits and facets, daily activity and heart rate variability).
