▼ ABSTRACT The Meaning of Being: The Challenges of Existential Psychology for Biblical Counseling Frederick Nobuya Rodeheaver In fulfillment for the degree Doctor of Philosophy The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary 2017 Chair: Dr. Jeremy Pierre The thesis of this dissertation is that any anthropology that guides pastoral counseling must account for the totality of the human experience, including an individual’s subjective experience of his or her life. Existential psychology, while captive to its own faulty assumptions, has made this kind of anthropological subjectivity a primary focus and thus becomes a helpful dialog partner to the biblical counseling movement in its continued trajectory of theoretical and methodological refinement. This dissertation concludes that while the insights of existential psychology are helpful to biblical counseling, due to its naturalistic assumptions their own therapeutic foci are more comprehensively answered from a theological framework, specifically in the doctrines of the imago Dei, and Christology. The study concludes with practical applications of existential psychology’s insights in the counseling relationship after they have been recast into a Christological context. Chapter 2 examines existential psychology in detail with particular emphasis on its key distinctive; a focus on existence instead of essence. The chapter concludes with a discussion explaining the failure of existential psychology to be the corrective to human understanding that its proponents hoped it to be. Chapter 3 investigates the three unique foci that existential psychology stresses to capture or understand personal subjectivity; the pursuit of authenticity, the problem of anxiety and the question of authority & autonomy. Chapter 4 recasts the very issues of chapter 3 in a Christological context based upon the imago Dei and its corollary doctrine the imago Christi. This recasting provides a surer foundation to the very issues that existential psychology emphasizes and provides the theological link to the therapeutic advantage that is found in existential psychology’s insight and techniques. Chapter 5 provides the practical application of the insights and discoveries of chapters 2 through 4 to the counseling relationship between the biblical counselor and counselee. Chapter 6 summarizes the main arguments of the dissertation and provides recommendations for future research. Advisors/Committee Members: Pierre, Jeremy (advisor).

Dissertação de mestrado apresentada ao ISPA - Instituto Universitário

Problema: Poucas investigações têm sido feitas ao nível das técnicas em psicoterapia existencial baseada em dados empíricos. A este nível destacam-se apenas os trabalhos de Norcross (1987) e de Alegria et al. (in press). Objetivo: Este estudo procurou perceber quais as práticas existentes em psicoterapia existencial a partir das quais os próprios psicoterapeutas existenciais consideraram ser as mais características do seu modelo de psicoterapia (Correia et al., 2014). Método: Trinta e duas sessões de oito participantes e quatro psicoterapeutas existenciais foram analisadas por dois analistas, através da grelha OGTEP. Resultados: Os resultados demonstram um predomínio de práticas relacionais (48,1%), práticas hermenêuticas (28,6%) e outras práticas não específicas do modelo existencial (12,9%). Práticas ligadas a conceitos existenciais obtiveram um resultado reduzido (0,4%). Estes dados sustentam a necessidade de futuras investigações de forma a averiguar a frequência destas práticas, nomeadamente face a diferentes ramos da psicoterapia existencial.

ABSTRACT – – Problem: Few research has been made in existential psychotherapy techniques based on empirical data. At this level only include the work of Norcross (1987) and Alegria et al. (in press). Aim: This study aimed to understand which practices in existential psychotherapy from which own existential psychotherapists considered to be the most features of their psychotherapy model (Correia et al., 2014). Method: Thirty-two sessions of eight participants and four existential psychotherapists were analyzed by two operators, through OGTEP grid. Results: The results showed a prevalence of relational practices (48.1%), hermeneutical practices (28.6%) and other non-specific practices of the existential model (12.9%). Practices related to existential concepts obtained a reduced result (0.4%). These data support the need for further investigation in order to ascertain the frequency of these practices, particularly given the different branches of existential psychotherapy.

O presente trabalho pretende discorrer a respeito do existencial compreensão dentro da obra Ser e Tempo de Martin Heidegger. Para isso, deve-se ter em vista o Dasein tal como foi conceituado pelo autor, como tendo relação fundamental com sua própria existência no mundo, esta determinando a sua essência. Desse modo, o existencial compreensão participa do triunvato: disposição, compreensão e linguagem, que definem o ser-aí em sua abertura. Focando-se na compreensão do sentido do ser, determinante da vivência cotidiana do Dasein, o trabalho se desenvolve do modo descrito a seguir. No primeiro capítulo, algo é falado a respeito dos tempos de estudo de Heidegger que precederam a escrita de Ser e Tempo. No segundo capítulo, algo é falado a respeito de Husserl e o impacto especial que suas idéias tiveram no pensamento Heideggeriano, muitas vezes construído como uma resposta possível a elas. No terceiro capítulo, a obra Ser e Tempo é claramente tematizada, e algo é falado a respeito de sua estrutura, especialmente as características do Dasein no que se referem a ao ser-no-mundo, cotidianidade, compreensão e temporalidade da compreensão, e interpretação. No quarto capítulo algo é falado a respeito das consequências da hermenêutica heideggeriana tal como foi apresentada, no que diz respeito ao que Heidegger apresenta de singular na compreensão do ser pelo Dasein

This paper intends to discuss about the existential understanding in the work Being and Time by Martin Heidegger. This should be donne having in sight Dasein as it was conceptualized by the author as having a fundamental relationship with his own existence in the world, this determining its essence. Thus, the existential understanding participates of the triumvirate: state-of-mind, understanding and language, that define the being-there in its opening. Focusing on understanding the meaning of being, determining the daily life od Dasein, the work evolves as described below. In the first chapter, something is said about the time of study of Heidegger that preceded the writing of Being and Time. In the second chapter, something is said about Husserl and the particular impact that his ideas had in heideggerian thought, often build as a possible response to them. In the third chapter, the work Being and Time is clearly thematized, and something is said about its structure, especially in the characteristics of Dasein which refers to being-in-the-world, everyday being, understanding and interpretation. In the fourth chapter something is said about the consequences of Heideggers hermeneutics as presented, with regard to what Heidegger presents as unique in the understanding of being of Dasein

▼ The purpose of this exegesis is to describe the theoretical, biographical, and practical journey of producing the text of the book, The Challenge of Existential Social Work Practice. The exegesis is Part A of the complete thesis, and Part B is the book itself, which is not submitted as a separate document, as it is subject to commercial contract with the publishers, Palgrave Macmillan. Part C is an article titled ‘Applying Gabriel Marcel’s Thought in Social Work Practice’, which was published in Marcel Studies in 2015 and is freely available on line. The three documents comprise my attempt to make sense of an existential approach to social work practice in the 21st century. In this exegesis, I critically examine the writings of key existential thinkers such as Jean Paul Sartre, Gabriel Marcel, and Martin Heidegger as they apply to social work. The view that existential thought is incommensurable with the diversity of existential perspectives is rejected. There are some fundamental concepts shared among existential thinkers. Two examples are the ideas of being-in-the-world and lived experience, which, I argue, are common to all the thinkers mentioned above. My focus is the application of existential thinking to social work practice. The corpus of existential creative writing, which includes literature, plays, films, and diaries, features less in my work than does explicitly philosophical writing. My view is that the philosophical works are most relevant to social work practice. However, existential creative writing does highlight important features of existential thought in a way that enhances our understanding of the underlying philosophy. Albert Camus, for example, wrote more creative works than philosophical ones, and as such this exploration of existential thought must cover a broad cross-section of existential writing limited by my focus on social work. For example, I refer to ‘The Guest’ (1958), a short story by Camus. I have used this short story because I believe that it brings out the dilemma of the helping person in a hostile environment in their role as both a social control and potential agent of social change. For me, Camus’s story exemplifies the challenge of being in both roles, taking both responsibilities seriously and facing the challenges of this dilemma.

▼ Existential loneliness is a concept that is largely ignored in the psychological research tradition, although from a philosophical perspective it is deeply connected to inherent human longings of connection and meaning. This research investigated the relationship between existential loneliness and two variables that are theoretically closely related to the concepts of connection and meaning, namely mindfulness (connection to oneself and others) and spiritual well-being (connection to a larger whole). This was done in a sample of n = 180 individuals (61.7% female; mean age 41.72, SD = 12.16) of the Dutch population. A multiple regression analysis was conducted. It can be concluded that there is a negative relationship between mindfulness and existential loneliness, as well as between spiritual well-being and existential loneliness. This means that people with a higher level of mindfulness and/or a higher level of spiritual well-being experience a lower level of existential loneliness. At the same time, people with a lower level of mindfulness and/or spiritual well-being experience a lower level of existential loneliness. There are some limitations to this study, for example the use of a non-random sampling method, a limited sample group, a scale that has not been widely tested, and a potential bias towards the higher educated. However, these limitations are inherent to exploratory research and does not diminish the main strength of this thesis, namely that it has provided more insight into an important and prevalent societal phenomenon, that had not been extensively researched previously, that has so far only been addressed in more philosophical instead of scientific debates, and linked almost exclusively to negative concepts, such as terminal illness. This research provides a first understanding of two positive determinants of existential loneliness, which could potentially be used to help make sense of this inherently humane condition, as well as to actively cope with the potential (adverse) effects of it.

▼ Current rates of excessive alcohol use and abuse among young adults are recognized as a major problem by scholars across a wide variety of fields. Here, I take a social psychological approach to understanding why individuals drink to excess, examining the unique role that a specific form of social isolation called existential isolation (feeling alone in one’s experiences of the world; Yalom, 1980; Pinel, Long, Murdoch, & Helm, 2017) may play in predicting alcohol use and abuse. The relationship between existential isolation and alcohol use is explored using both correlational and cross-lagged designs. Results indicate that existential isolation predicts alcohol use above and beyond a more traditional measure of social isolation, though not in the hypothesized direction (i.e. social isolation is associated with more alcohol use, whereas existential isolation is associated with less). Further, negative emotional symptoms (depression, anxiety, and stress) and racial identity emerged as significant moderators of this effect. Exploratory analyses considering a reversal of the hypothesized causal direction (i.e. alcohol use now predicting feelings of existential isolation) revealed a significant two-way interaction between current and lifetime alcohol use and a significant three-way interaction between current alcohol use, desire for existential connection, and motivations to use alcohol for social purposes. Implications of these general findings are discussed, including that 1) they identify a seemingly positive outcome of drinking that may play a role in perpetuating problematic alcohol use, and 2) conversely, they may illustrate a “dark side of sobriety.” This research serves as a first step into distinguishing between aspects of social isolation in the realm of alcohol use and abuse. Future research is necessary in order to identify the mechanisms underlying this effect and inform the development of more effective alcohol-related interventions. ▼ Background: Reminiscence interventions for people with dementia ignore the role of nostalgia, despite overwhelming evidence that nostalgia is a psychological resource in social psychology research involving non-clinical populations. To date, research has not examined the effects of nostalgia among people with dementia. One possible reason for this is that dementia is rarely conceptualised as an existential threat although existential concerns are implicit within the dementia literature. Aim: To compare nostalgic and non-nostalgic memories on a range of psychological resources (outcomes) among people with mild to moderate dementia. Methods: Two randomised controlled experimental studies were conducted among individuals with mild to moderate dementia. Nostalgic and non-nostalgic memories were evoked either using an event-reflection technique (Study 1) or music (Study 2). Outcome measures were social connectedness, self-esteem, meaning in life, self-continuity, optimism and positive and negative affect. Data were analysed using content analysis to explore the way in which both memories were experienced. Several statistical tests were then used to compare the two memories on the outcomes. Results: Nostalgic memories were experienced differently from non-nostalgic memories. Nostalgic memories tended to be more self-relevant, prominently featured people and sometimes assumed a redemption sequence. Statistically, nostalgic memories significantly increased social connectedness, self-esteem, meaning in life, self-continuity, optimism and positive (but not negative) affect relative to non-nostalgic memories in both studies. However, only individuals who were more resilient (Study 2) or were higher in trait deficit-reduction (Study 1) perceived social connectedness benefits from nostalgia. Moreover, participants who were more neurotic did not derive meaning in life and self-continuity benefits from nostalgia (Study 1). Conclusion: Nostalgia is a positive psychological resource for people with mild to moderate dementia. This calls for future research to investigate the use of nostalgic reminiscence as an intervention to manage various existential threats among people with dementia.

▼ Genetic counselors routinely engage with patients and families who grapple with questions of meaning while making decisions about genetic risk (Biesecker, 2001). Research and theory demonstrate genetic counselors gain important personal insights through their work (Runyon et al., 2010) and grow professionally from self-reflective practice regarding their beliefs and values (Zahm, 2009, 2010). Data are lacking, however, about the nature of the meaning genetic counselors bring to the profession and how they directly experience and/or navigate issues of meaning within clinical practice over time. Accordingly, a national sample (N=298) of practicing genetic counselors completed a survey assessing demographic characteristics and willingness to participate in a semi-structured telephone interview exploring their views on meaning as they relate to their clinical work and professional development. Sixty-eight individuals of varied experience levels were interviewed about: 1) how they define a meaningful life for themselves; 2) lifetime sources of influence on their sense of meaning; 3) work-related contexts that reaffirm their sense of meaning; 4) work-related contexts that challenge their sense of meaning; 5) how their sense of meaning has changed over time; and 6) reasons for participating in this study. Twenty-five interviews were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research methods (Hill, 2012); data saturation was reached at that point. Thirty-six thematic domains and 31 categories were extracted. Common themes included: importance of satisfying relationships; helping others; personal fulfillment; personal and patient experiences of illness and loss; religious and/or spiritual foundations; value conflicts; competing obligations; challenges to meaning; development of empathy; resiliency; and increased humility. Results suggest the importance of professional venues for discussions of meaning (e.g., genetic counseling program curricula, continuing education, and peer supervision/consultation). Additional findings, illustrative examples, and practice implications and research recommendations are presented.

▼ This thesis proposes an existential analysis of the ethical dimension of film. Its goal is to illuminate the role of fiction in creating and testing moral worlds. It does so by examining Unforgiven, a Western film by Clint Eastwood. This examination provides the grounded analysis of a specific moral universe, relating it to earlier analyses of the Western genre. In doing so, the thesis stakes a claim for ethical textual analysis as an alternative to formalism and other established approaches to analyzing film. This thesis examines film as an ethically significant art form. It argues that film is a crucial laboratory for ethical discussion in which the lifeworld, and the representation of lifeworld are interdependent. This interdependence creates a locus of ethical obligation requiring ethical consideration. One issue inherent in film as a locus of ethical obligation is Paul Ricoeur’s concept that relations among human beings are symmetrical. This symmetry is intrinsic to the relation between film viewers and the characters in the films they view. For films to have emotional and intellectual meaning, viewers must understand film characters as persons who confront the audience with ethical dilemmas and actions. These characters are important precisely because the ethical dilemmas they face and the actions they take resemble those of viewers who watch a film. In this perspective, films participate in constructing the nomothetic universe of the viewer, enabling the viewer to reflect upon the nomos a film evokes. The viewer experiences film as an ethical and existential text, enabling the viewer to reflect in ways similar to Ricoeur’s description of philosophy as reflection on human existence. The symbolic form of film experience renders the ethical and existential issues of human experience accessible. This permits the viewer to grasp these issues in human concrete terms. Film genres present human experience by representing a lifeworld that permits engagement and reflection. In this thesis, scene-by-scene analysis of the unfolding narrative recapitulates the experience of viewing the film. The temporal experience of viewing emulates Ricoeur’s narrative structure of ethical decision as well as the structure of interpretation. As narrative, Unforgiven creates a world to tell a story. As philosophy, Unforgiven highlights the ethical and existential problems of human responsibility and the status of the subject. As a work of art, Unforgiven creates a surplus of meaning that meets each viewer on a hermeneutical horizon as individual and different as one viewer is from the next.

▼ The aim of this thesis was to explore existential loneliness from the perspective of significant others, to contrast their perceptions with frail older people’s experiences and to describe significant others’ and family care advisors’ views on existential support. This thesis is part of a larger research project about existential loneliness among frail older people, the LONE study. The thesis embraces three qualitative and one quantitative study. A total of 29 significant others, 15 frail older people and 120 family care advisors participated in the studies. The significant others were husbands, wives, daughters, sons, other relatives and friends to frail older people. The concept ‘frail older people’ was defined as older persons (≥ 75 years old) dependent on long-term health- or social care. The qualitative studies were based on multistage focus-group interviews (study I) and individual interviews (studies II and III). The quantitative study (IV) had a cross-sectional design and was based on a questionnaire specifically developed for the current study. Different methods to analyse data were used; hermeneutics (study I), content analysis (study II), a case study with thematic analysis (study III) and descriptive statistics (study IV). Findings from the four studies show that existential loneliness emerges when: 1) Longing for, but also striving for, a deeper feeling of connectedness, 2) Being in, but also enduring, an unwanted separation, and 3) Not finding, but still trying to recreate meaning. This thesis also shows that existential loneliness is often experienced in so-called limit situations in life and arises in difficult choices related to close relationships, in connection with experiences of meaninglessness and in the absence of connection to something or someone. The results show that existential loneliness emerges in the process of balancing between what was and what is to come in the unknown future. Significant others navigate themselves, and sometimes together with the older person, through an unfamiliar existence that makes them feel ambivalent about the de-cisions they have previously made and the decisions they need to make in the future, while also doubting the meaning in their current situation. Existential support should mainly focus on transition phases and on relational aspects. Person-centredness can be a way to make the existential needs of significant others and older people visible and to provide support based on their needs.

▼ This dissertation investigates the Mandarin Chinese nominals [Numeral-Classifier-(de)-Noun] and their functions as preverbal and post-verbal subjects and topics. It starts with a close analysis of the internal structure of the Chinese nominals. I propose a set of syntactic structures that capture the behaviors and distinctions between the canonical [Num(eral)-Cl(assifier)-N(oun)] and the non-canonical [Num(eral)-Cl(assifier)-de-N(oun)] expressions. Upon close examinations of the extensive data, Chapter 2 concludes that the canonical [Num-Cl-N] has a right-branching structure (Tang 1990, 2005; Li 1998, 1999), while the non-canonical [Num-Cl-de-N] has two left-branching structures, which correspond to the amount reading and the attributive reading respectively. I also explore two issues related to the Chinese nominal structures, the classifier modification case [Num-A(djective)-Cl-N] and the null yi 'one' case [(yi)-Cl-N]. For the former issue, I suggest that the combination of the adjective and the CL/M is decided by the semantic compatibility among the gradable adjective, the CL/M, and the head noun. As for the latter, I propose that Mandarin [Cl-N] and [yi-Cl-N] have the same structure, and yi 'one' is subject to PF deletion in destressed contexts (Li 1998). ❧ From the internal nominal structures, I go on to explore the Chinese nominals in preverbal positions, that is, the canonical subject positions and topic positions. Specifically, I seek to permute the DP-internal account (Li 1998, 1999) with a more refined predicational distinction that incorporates the primacy of location (McNally 1992) in the thetic/categorical distinction (Kuroda 1992, 2005). I suggest that only location-dependent Stage-level predicates (LD SLP) express thetic judgment. Individual-level predicates (ILP), which are location-independent (unless coerced), must be categorical. Location-independent Stage-level predicates (LI SLP) are also categorical; however, when [Num-Cl-N], particularly [yi 'one'-Cl-N], is acceptable, it is a type of quantificational sentence (Kuroda 1995, Shyu 2012). What this proposal translates into subject definiteness/specificity is that ILP must have definite or generic subjects, LI SLP may have specific subjects, and the LD SLP can have non-specific subjects. ❧ I continue the discussion of Chinese subjects by looking at the post-verbal subjects in the Existential Construction (EC) you 'have'-sentences, particularly the EC with secondary predicates, called the Existential Coda Construction (ECC). I argue against the adjunct and the NP/DP analyses in the literature, and proposed a V-complement analysis which is functionally a topic-comment structure. The proposed structure is able to account for the essential properties of the ECC as well as the lack of the Coda restriction in Mandarin, that is, Mandarin ECC allows ILP.
