Based on 13 months of ethnographic research, this dissertation documents how the people of Tautu, Vanuatu incorporate the global flows of biomedicine and Christianity into their local knowledge structures and social practices and the resulting integration of biomedical, Christian, and traditional medical ideologies and practices. This integration is articulated in Tautuans' theories of illness causation and categories of care; knowledge practice; diagnosis and treatment processes; definitions of health and illness; and healing narratives. At the center of this creative, integrative process are traditional social relations based on kinship and exchange and the related principles of pragmatism, "dividuality," and reciprocity. However, Christianity – specifically "gift" narratives in which Tautuans explain that their healing knowledge and powers come from God – is the main discursive frame through which Tautuans create a middle ground between "traditional" and "modern/Western." These gift narratives serve multiple purposes. First, they allow patients and practitioners to organize their past experiences and to make sense of suffering. Second, in these "gift" narratives Tautuans authorize certain aspects of traditional medicine by reconstructing them as Christian knowledge. Third, through these narratives Tautuans are carving out a space where biomedical, traditional, Christian forms of healing are complimentary practices, as the idea that all types of medicine are "gifts from God" causes the categories of biomedical, traditional, and Christian to fall away and to be subsumed by the larger heading of "spiritual healing." Fourth, these gift narratives are also religious narratives about salvation intended to convert people not only to kastom medicine but also to the Christian faith. Finally, these narratives are an attempt to appropriate and indigenize biomedical ideologies and forms of knowledge production and to gain international recognition of the efficacy of traditional medicinal plants; these narratives, then, illustrate Tautuans' desires to globalize their local practices and to engage with the modern world on their own terms.

▼ Understanding dynamic, unpredictable, multiple, pluralistic and entangled relations in technology and organization is an inherent endeavor of the Information System (IS) research. However, recent innovation and changes in technology and organizations have posed significant challenges to the existing theoretical and methodological lens to analyze mutually dependent, ensemble, inseparable, ceaselessly intra-actable and constitutively entangled relations in technology and organizations. In line, this study employed sociomateriality as a wider theoretical lens to analyze constitutive entanglements and disentanglements in technology and organization illustrated with a case of E-service of land record in Bangladesh. This study has applied sociomateriality along with intra-actions, diffraction, relational ontology and performativity lens to trace continuous constitutive entanglements and disentanglements in the E-service. Thus, this study identified significance of constitutive entanglement lens through tracing unprecedented changes, unintended consequences and unexpected outcomes from the intra-actions, diffractions, relationalities and performativity in the organizational context and technological process of the E-service. This study has developed ‗action design ethnographic research' (ADER) as an in-depth methodological framework through conducting 'action design research‘ (ADR) in the process of ethnographic research (ER). In line, this study has formulated problems in organizational contexts, designed and redesigned solutions through mutually reciprocal relations between the researcher and clients, conducted concurrent evaluation and identified learning. Consequently, this study has addressed the practitioners' problems through engaging and intervening in the organizational contexts and technological processes of the E-service of land record in Bangladesh. Thus, both the sociomaterial lens and ADER offered potentials to design and redesign the organizational contexts and the E-service processes. Along the line, the study has contributed to theory and practice of IS research through applying sociomateriality and addressing practitioners‘ problems. Therefore, this study has made significant contribution to knowledge and practice.

Atualmente as empresas encontram-se em um ambiente bastante competitivo e necessitam inovar continuamente em produtos que possam atender os consumidores cada vez mais exigentes. Neste contexto, a pesquisa etnográfica, originada na antropologia, passa a adquirir importância na área de marketing, por ser considerada como uma das alternativas para gerar idéias para novos produtos. Entretanto, alguns estudiosos têm alertado pelo uso indiscriminado da técnica e, por não obedecer o rigor metodológico, têm aplicado o método de observação ao invés da pesquisa etnográfica. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de verificar como os profissionais de marketing têm utilizado a pesquisa etnográfica na geração de idéias para novos produtos. O trabalho utiliza como base teórica os conceitos e métodos da etnografia originada na antropologia e, a sua adaptação para o marketing. Posteriormente foi realizada a pesquisa de campo que se propôs a investigar junto a esses profissionais, como eles têm utilizado a ferramenta, quais são as limitações e contribuições para a área de marketing. Em conjunto com essas entrevistas foi analisada a metodologia aplicada em três projetos denominados etnográficos, para verificar se o rigor metodológico obedece os preceitos básicos da etnografia adaptada ao marketing. O resultado confirmou a existência do uso indiscriminado e a falta de um rigor metodológico, bem como a confusão na aplicação da metodologia com a técnica de observação, resultado da pressão por prazos, da falta de especialistas que dominem a técnica e do desconhecimento pelo próprio cliente que solicita a pesquisa. Apesar de entender as limitações desse estudo, chega-se ao ponto de que novas pesquisas devem ser desenvolvidas para o aprofundamento das questões-chave da problemática, e propiciar novos rumos a um instrumento que se conclui ser fundamental para a área de marketing

Nowadays, companies have been working in a competitive environment and for this reason, they need to innovate and deliver products, which meet consumers expectations. Ethnographic research originated from anthropology, and became popular in marketing. This research has become a method to understand consumers and generate ideas for new products. However, some experts have called attention to the bad utilization of the methodology and according to them, the marketing research executives have opted to use an observation technique, intrinsic to the conventional qualitative research rather, ethnography. The proposal of this study is to confirm or contradict the statement above, and verifies how the creation of a new product occurs, considering the employment of the techniques related to the ethnographic research. The foundations of this work follow the ethnographical and the anthropological concepts and methods in order to understand how it was the adaptation to the marketing area. ▼ This thesis explores and analyses the mythical quality of modem Athens as experienced by tourists. It is an exploration of the tourist gaze upon the Athenian landscape, as well as an account of how tourists narrate its urban mythology. This research is largely concerned with the relationship of time and space through memory, exploring the interplay between the spatial arrangement of urban elements, temporality and the experience of the city. Athens is viewed as a city marked by a temporal collage where different historical periods are juxtaposed. This juxtaposition gives Athens the character of a deconstructed city. The city is made present through spatialised remainders, her genius loci. This thesis thus analyses the relationship between Athens past and the present, the strangely familiar and the stereotypically exotic, as interwoven within an urban landscape imagined, gazed and finally, narrated by foreign tourists. The core argument of this work is that the Athenian landscape embodies an urban mythology constructed by the nineteenth century romantic travellers: these, through their writings, fashioned the stereotypical imagery of Athens. Modem tourists are the consumers of these myths. Like their nineteenth century predecessors, tourists stroll around the city following the traces of their memory - key landmarks and symbols, recognising what they have already known; feeling nostalgic for the past -their past, fragmenting the landscape into different historic layers, depopulating it from its present inhabitants, orientalising it. In this work I explore the transmission and reinvention of the myths of Athens through guidebooks, travel brochures, guided tours and tourist photographs. The exploration of the different images of Athens as visualised by tourists leads to a discussion of gendered, orientalised, literary, photographic and cartographic aspects of the Athenian urban landscape. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on post-modernism, post-structuralism and semiotics. My research methods have been qualitative, including both in-depth interviews and participant observation, following tourists around the city and participating in their activities. I also analysed the ways tourists 'gaze' and photograph the city. My intention is to draw -metaphorically speaking- a mental map including the sites visited, consumed and experienced by tourists.

▼ Sociology of dance is an evolving discipline that takes as a central focus the social makeup of dance – the societal structures and individual agency that are inherent within dance activity and practice. Relevant ethnographic literature that adopts particular sociological concepts and models is generally narrow in focus, with attention centred on the frameworks of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault and the conformation of vocational and professional ballet and contemporary dancer minds and bodies, to particular practice-specific behaviours and beliefs. Through drawing on Erving Goffman’s (1959/1990) model of dramaturgy, this interdisciplinary thesis uncovers and interrogates the two-way relationship between sociological micro relations (social interactions), and various types of dance activity and practice. Six case studies undertaken encompass a wide range of dance and social settings; the professional ballet class, inclusive creative dance class, line dancing class, salsa club, Highland dancing class, and dance in primary education. Data was collected through undertaking participant observation (primary method) and qualitative interviews (secondary method): each specific combination was influenced by the reflexive approach followed, the nature and setting of each case study and as researcher, my own dance ability. The transcripts and field notes were analysed and situated within Goffman’s (1959/1990) framework to interrogate the social and dance ‘performances’ given. The research aims to firstly, uncover and present the nature of the ‘realities’ (Goffman, 1959/1990) within each setting and secondly, to interrogate and demonstrate the applicability of the dramaturgical model to dance scholarship. The findings reflect the sociological binary of individual agency and societal structures as realities were shaped by the ‘place’ of each dance activity and practice in the field of dance, and challenged, maintained or supported existing dominant perceptions. ▼ Precipitated by the news of the death of Johanna Exiner, this research is an investigation into the current state of Australian dance therapy, an investigation that required the integration of three bodies of knowledge and data: first, a literature study of the origins of dance therapy between 1940 and the mid-60s in the US; secondly a study of the two founding figures of Australian dance therapy; and thirdly a multi-sensory study of nine Australian dance therapists. The research into contemporary dance therapists includes a range of phenomenological and ethnographic approaches as well as arts-based enquiry in which the body of the researcher herself was deployed as a probe, sensor and articulator of the meanings of body movement across a range of diverse dance therapy sessions. This embodied dance experience was found to be a uniquely valuable source of insight into the world of dance therapy practice, a world that is not easily described in language. The findings of the research were both reassuring and disquieting. They suggest that Australian dance therapy may be on the cusp of a crisis which included many dimensions. There was a falling off in the expressive dance skills and experience among new entrants to the field. Neighbouring body-based therapies are better at 'marketing' themselves than dance therapy. The demise of the dance therapy courses at the University of Melbourne has meant that there is no longer any recognised educational pathway in Australia leading to postgraduate study in dance therapy, and a consequent paucity of research from within and on Australian dance therapy. And so dance therapy itself seems at risk in that it is weakly defined, resourced, and 'branded', as well as lacking robust, accredited training/study and research infrastructures. However, the successful use of movement observation and analysis as well as embodied dance experience points to a rich vein of research for phenomenologically disclosing and representing the essence of dance therapy sessions in a 'language of movement' that does not detour through potentially distortive psycho-therapeutic language or vocabulary. Finally the hope is that this study may provide a valuable contribution to the dance therapy profession and assist its caapcity building by raising again Exiner's radical challenge to the field to re-define dance therapy back towards the inherent healing powers of movement and dance in themselves. It may be that how the field responds to this challenge will determine it future vitality and viability

▼ In recent times, recess has become threatened by the press for more academic instruction time and by fears of violent behavior. A dramatic indicator of this trend is seen in the increasing number of schools and school districts which have done away with or significantly reduced recess time (BBC news, 2007; Coughlan, 2007; Jarrett, 2002; Pressler, 2006; Sindelar, 2004). Underlying these actions is a belief that free play time is separate, and might even detract, from the work of school. This dissertation study, examines youth's communicative practices in the common playground game four square, providing evidence that important types of learning occur during recess time play. Furthermore, the findings of this study provide direction for curricular and classroom practice innovation. Ethnographic in nature, this dissertation draws from over thirty five hours of audio/video recording gathered during lunch recess, collected during the 2007-2008 school year, at a small inner city elementary school playground, in a high needs area, of a large costal United States city. Utilizing methods common to linguistic anthropology, this study employs carefully composed transcripts as the primary data source, supported by extensive field notes and other analytic writings. The study is situated in three broad areas of inquiry: semiotic and language development, literacy theory and practice, and the study of peer cultures. The findings indicate that playground games are a unique part of physical culture and, furthermore, provide particular semiotic affordances which contribute to youth's language learning. A model for understanding the different semiotic affordances of activities during recess is proposed. In their play youth are shown to use gesture and posture as a way of scaffolding talk and building complex utterances. Specifically, in this study, the playing of four square is shown to provide youth with an opportunity to develop a semiotic awareness, that is, an awareness of how words, bodily expressions and objects can stand for other things and actions. As such this study has implications for a notion of literacy theory that engages with meaning making on a broad level. The study makes the argument for an embodied notion of literacy to be developed that accounts for the unique ways youth use their bodies as expressive mediums. Recess is shown to be much more than simply a time for "blowing off steam". Far from a "cognitive rest" as recess has been hypothesized to function as, important work happens when youth are engaged with each other, in creative and physically interactive ways. It is shown that the information gathered from studying youth engagement with games and each other during recess time can be used to inform classroom practices, and suggestions for curriculum are presented.

▼ Based on ethnographic research on exiled Tibetan political institutions and practices in India, this thesis investigates sovereignty in exile. The Tibetan Government-in-exile (TGiE), based in India since 1960, remains internationally unrecognised, has limited judicial powers and lacks de jure sovereignty over territory in both Tibet and in exile. However, this exiled administration claims legitimacy as the official representative of the Tibetan population, attempts to make its voice heard within the international community and performs a number of state-like functions in relation to its diasporic 'citizenry'. Given that conventional political theory is premised on the territorially-bounded sovereign nation-state as a container for political activity, and governments are legitimated according to the territory over which they hold authority, this is an exceptional case of a government which appears to refute these orthodox assumptions. As such, this study of the form, functioning and limitations of TGiE and of its existence and state-like operations within another sovereign state, raises important theoretical issues which speak directly to political geography's concerns with power and space. These include the nature of sovereignty, the extent to which sovereignty can be disentangled from jurisdiction over territory, and the role of 'the exception' in geopolitical discourses. Employing multi-sited ethnographic methodologies, the broad aims of this research are to investigate what kind of political entity the TGiE is, and to examine the nature ofthe sovereignty it articulates. To do so, attention is paid to Tibetan settlements in exile as sites of sovereignty, TGiE's construction of a Tibetan 'population' in exile and its management of livelihoods, the negotiation of exilic political identities, and the strategic spatialities of TGiE's election systems. Rejecting realist arguments that polities such as TGiE should be viewed merely as discrepant forms of political practice, it is argued that if sovereignty is understood as historically contingent and socially constructed - and the state, sovereignty, and territory thereby conceptually disentangled - this opens up the theoretical possibility of territorial-less sovereign polities.

▼ This study aims to examine children’s musical games in a natural performance context, the Greek school playground. It focuses on the meaning children attribute to their musical games, as well as the practices they develop, and the ways they interact and communicate during these musical performances. The musical games children play in their free time is a very recent research area, which has developed mainly in a few countries in Europe and Africa as well as in Australia and the US (K. Marsh, 2008. Grugeon, 2001. Dzansi, 2004. Harrop-Allin, 2010. Harwood, 1998b). While there is a research gap in Greece, there is a need to investigate children’s musical games in depth as they take place spontaneously in the Greek school playgrounds today. The above issues were examined through three research questions. The first question looks at various aspects of children’s culture expressed though their musical games focusing on issues of context, group formation, preferences, technology, oral transmission and creativity. The second question looks at how children interact during their musical performances, focusing on participants’ multimodal communication as well as on the teaching and learning practices they develop. The third question examines the teachers’ views on children’s musical games in the playground. The research is ethnographical (Atkinson, Coffey, Delamont, Lofland & Lofland, 2007) and was conducted in nine schools in urban, semi-urban and rural environments in three different geographical areas of Greece, and more specifically in four counties (Xanthi, Attica, Piraeus and Rethymno). Data collection took place through the methodological tools of participant observation, group interviews with the children, video recordings of the musical performances, and individual interviews with the teachers. The research lasted for 2 weeks in each school and 6 months in total (January-June 2017). The material collected from participant observation was analysed using the method of ethnographic narration (Emerson, Fretz & Shaw, 2011) and the material collected from the students and the teachers during the interviews as well as participant observation was analysed through the thematic analysis method (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Video recordings of musical performances were analysed drawing on multimodality principles (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2001. Kress, 2000. Jewitt & Kress, 2003) and applying a modification of other researchers’ multimodal approaches (Bezemer, 2014. Bishop & Burn, 2013). The analysis showed that musical games are alive in Greek school playgrounds with a repertoire that has been enriched from the internet and is transformed as it is orally transmitted. Through musical games, children question and/or validate social relations, values, behaviours and stereotypes. In addition to the lyrics and movement patterns, children also use various ways to communicate and interact in their musical games, such as speech, gaze, body posture and orientation, facial expressions, gestures, touch and space among the performers (proxemics).…

▼ A investigação sobre as crianças de rua em Luanda: uma caracterização das suas expressões culturais pretende caraterizar as expressões culturais que as crianças de rua em Luanda usam no seu quotidiano. Através desta caracterização foi possível descobrir de que maneira elas usam e manifestam as suas expressões culturais, qual é a sua ligação com a cultura e a história da Angola, quais são as capacidades que as crianças mobilizam nas expressões e de que maneira as crianças se desenvolvem através destas expressões culturais, considerando a teoria de Howard Gardner sobre inteligências múltiplas. Esta investigação foi realizada com a participação das crianças de rua em Luanda, mais propriamente as crianças da casa Magone, que é um centro de acolhimento que faz parte da congregação católica Dom Bosco. Também participaram crianças que residem (por um período) nos diferentes lugares de Luanda. O trabalho de campo foi concretizado através da colaboração do VIS e do Dom Bosco, que me deram a possibilidade de estar em contacto com as crianças deste estudo. A investigação foi feita através da metodologia qualitativa com orientação etnográfica que consistiu em conviver com as crianças da casa Magone durante partes do dia e da noite, no centro de acolhimento e nas ruas. Além disso, convivi com diferentes grupos de crianças que residem (por um tempo) nos diferentes lugares da cidade: Largo 1º de Maio, Bairro do São Paulo e Avenida Marginal. Durante o convívio usei os recursos da observação participante, entrevistas, conversas inesperadas e participei nas actividades criadas pelas crianças. A investigação assumiu a forma de um estudo de caso, o que implicou o envolvimento e a participação das crianças num conjunto de actividades, num processo democrático, onde são incluídas como cidadãs, com vista ao seu desenvolvimento pessoal e ao desenvolvimento de competências e confiança (Kirby, 1999). Desta forma, não só foram objecto de estudo mas tornaram-se investigadoras delas próprias. ▼ Este estudo tem por tema a formação permanente de professores de educação física da Secretaria Municipal de Esportes, Recreação e Lazer de Porto Alegre, bem como as relações desta formação com a prática deste coletivo docente. Esta investigação focaliza os significados atribuídos por estes professores a sua formação permanente na relação com o cotidiano de suas práticas pedagógicas, tendo em vista as características institucionais onde se realiza: de espaço de atuação nãoescolar como praças, parques, centros de comunidade, ruas, associações comunitárias; bem como a grande diversidade de campos de atuação deste professorado que tem no lazer, no esporte e em ações ligadas à promoção da saúde os instrumentos de sua intervenção, nos seus vieses educativos, competitivos e ou lúdicos. A pergunta que sintetiza o problema de investigação e orienta as decisões metodológicas é: Quais significados o professorado de educação física da Secretaria Municipal de Esportes, Recreação e Lazer de Porto Alegre atribui ao seu processo de formação permanente e que impactos este processo produz no cotidiano de sua prática pedagógica? Para responder a esta questão realizei entrevistas semi-estruturadas, analisei documentos do período que vai de 1989 até 2009; com o mesmo intento, utilizei as observações e registros do diário de campo sobre as situações de formação promovidas pela instituição e do cotidiano das práticas dos professores de educação física desta secretaria, que permitissem a construção de quadro de análise e interpretação sobre o material coletado. O processo analítico apontou para algumas categorias significativas para a compreensão de práticas docentes e do papel que a formação permanente ocupa na sua sustentação e na superação dos desafios e contradições presentes nestas práticas. Uma destas categorias situa-se no não-lugar do espaço público da secretaria – a possibilidade e a expectativa de uma ação educativa em espaços que não parecem claramente associados aos significados da instituição escolar Desta decorre uma outra, situada no próprio sujeito do estudo: o “ser-não ser” do professor desta instituição – as tensões e contradições na construção de uma identidade docente – manifestas em trajetos de aproximação à cultura escolar ao mesmo tempo que elenca as peculiaridades distintivas do seu fazer educativo. ▼ A qualidade de vida (QV) é buscada incessantemente pelos seres humanos que realizam diversas mudanças no seu dia-a-dia no sentido de ter uma vida melhor. Este trabalho é uma pesquisa sobre a QV inserida no campo social, com a população dos catadores de materiais recicláveis, trabalhadores que têm sido estudados porque realizam um trabalho importante para a limpeza das cidades e para o meio ambiente. A pesquisa foi realizada com os catadores da Associação dos Coletores de Materiais Recicláveis de Florianópolis - ACMR. Esta associação se encontra instalada na capital de Santa Catarina e é composta por pessoas que buscam uma QV melhor por meio da coleta e venda de materiais recicláveis. O objetivo geral foi procurar compreender a manifestação das categorias da QV destes catadores e, para que este pudesse ser alcançado, surgiram os seguintes objetivos específicos: Identificar a percepção dos fatores da qualidade de vida e analisar a manifestação dos fatores da qualidade de vida dos catadores de materiais recicláveis da ACMR. Para tanto, iniciou-se a pesquisa teórica acerca do tema QV, momento em que se verificaram as definições acerca deste, seguindo da construção teórica sobre os sujeitos catadores de materiais recicláveis, procurando entender o funcionamento do cotidiano deles, a sua rotina de trabalho, as dificuldades, os sentimentos por eles vividos e a forma como operam a sua vida. A pesquisa etnográfica, estratégia utilizada para o desenvolvimento do trabalho, norteou a pesquisa de campo que foi realizada por meio de visitas à associação. Convivendo com os sujeitos pesquisados, as sucessivas entrevistas em profundidade foram realizadas. Para entender a realidade dos nativos, houve a necessidade de buscar da visão com o olhar do outro e assim se encontrou uma forma de compreender outra realidade de um mundo que ao mesmo tempo é próximo e distante. Após a pesquisa de campo, efetuou-se a transcrição dos dados coletados e a interpretação destes, momento em que se revelou a percepção dos fatores da QV e, posteriormente, foi possível identificar e analisar a manifestação dos fatores da QV destes catadores. Após realizou-se um comparativo entre as categorias da QV segundo o entendimento dos autores estudados e as consideradas pelos catadores como fatores da QV, e ao final, foram formuladas novas definições para QV a partir da visão dos catadores Advisors/Committee Members: Elaine Ferreira, Christiane Kleinübing Godoi, Sérgio Luís Boeira.

Τhis Ph.D. Thesis aims to analyze the results of a research project based on ethnography in order to explore the concept of citizenship, democracy and child’s right to education as formulated by national and supranational authorities, sociopolitical situation, economic crisis and the interaction of social subjects. It is based on the analysis of group interviews and discussions, pupils’ ideas, comments and opinions, on data coming from the participant observation field, the issues raised and the discussions among pupils and teachers. In the first part research is focused on the analysis of young pupils’ perceptions aged 10-12 year at an ordinary primary school about the content of citizenship and role and the objectives of citizenship education in the curriculum and the school community. It also based on research-action as a technique to explore students' views of the ideal school and shaped the second part of research. In this context, the second part of research is focused on the analysis of a teaching intervention for emancipation, inspired by libertarian and critical pedagogy. Through different concepts and controversial issues, aims to encouraged students to analyze their own experience based on participation, knowledge and discussions and form on students’ active role by different material for the construction of their citizenship.

Η παρούσα διατριβή αποτελεί μία ποιοτική έρευνα βασιζόμενη στην εθνογραφία με στόχο να διερευνήσει το περιεχόμενο της ιδιότητας του πολίτη, της δημοκρατίας και του δικαιώματος στην εκπαίδευση, όπως διαμορφώνονται από τους εθνικούς και υπερ-εθνικούς θεσμούς, τις κοινωνικές και πολιτικές συνθήκες, την οικονομική κρίση και τη διάδραση των κοινωνικών υποκειμένων. Βασίστηκε στην ανάλυση των συλλογικών και ατομικών συνεντεύξεων, των συζητήσεων, των απόψεων και πρακτικών των ατόμων, δεδομένα που προέκυψαν από τη συμμετοχική παρατήρηση στο χώρο του σχολείου, αλλά και των ζητημάτων που προέκυψαν από τις συζητήσεις μεταξύ των εκπαιδευτικών, των μαθητών και των γονέων. Στο πρώτο μέρος η έρευνα αφορά την ανάλυση των πεποιθήσεων των ενηλίκων και των μαθητών, ηλικίας 10-12 ετών, σε μία τυπική σχολική μονάδα σχετικά με το περιεχόμενο και το ρόλο της ιδιότητας του πολίτη στο αναλυτικό πρόγραμμα και τη σχολική καθημερινότητα. Παράλληλα μέσω της αξιοποίησης της έρευνας-δράσης ως τεχνικής διερευνήθηκαν οι οπτικές των μαθητών για το ιδανικό σχολείο και διαμορφώθηκε το δεύτερο μέρος της έρευνας. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό το δεύτερο μέρος της έρευνας αφορά την ανάλυση μιας διδακτικής παρέμβασης με στόχο τη χειραφέτηση βασιζόμενη στις αρχές της ελευθεριακής και της κριτικής παιδαγωγικής. Αξιοποιώντας διάφορα εποπτικά μέσα και αντιφατικά θέματα που αντλήθηκαν από την καθημερινότητα επιχειρήθηκε από τη μια η ενδυνάμωση των μαθητών, ώστε να καταστούν ικανοί να αναλύουν την εμπειρία τους στη βάση της δικής τους συμμετοχής, της γνώσης και των συζητήσεων και από την άλλη η διαμόρφωση του ενεργού ρόλου των μαθητών μέσω διαφόρων υλικών για την κατασκευή της ιδιότητας του πολίτη.

▼ The news media are powerful purveyors of culture in North America. Crime news reporting particularly is an influential means by which the news media define the boundaries of deviant and non-deviant behaviour. For the purposes of the present research, I examined the ways that the print news media constructed cases of male-perpetrated Intimate Partner Homicide (IPH) in Alberta. Using a social constructionist theoretical orientation grounded in an Ethnographic Content Analysis methodology, I examined 381 newspaper articles that discussed four separate incidents of male-perpetrated IPH. Approaching these data from the perspective of media reciprocity and a social constructionism epistemology, I considered the various ways that the print media presented these cases for their audience, but also the various ways that the audience’s expectations and the general zeitgeist of the culture may have affected this presentation. Much of the dominant discourse in the cases I studied was consistent with previous research examining IPH presentations in the news media, namely that the media present victims and perpetrators in stereotyped ways according to their gender and ethnicity. However, I also examined some less prominent themes, including those that were pro-feminist, ambivalent, fictionalized, and constructed for the purpose of audience titillation and voyeurism. Additionally, owing to the qualitative nature of the methodology, I was able to examine discussions that subverted the stereotypical representation of victims and perpetrators in the news media and examine how these presentations could affect audience understanding of the phenomenon of IPH. Overall, the present project led to a discussion of how the media construct various facets of psychology and feminism and how these facets are in turn constructed by society in a reciprocal process whereby the media influence culture and culture correspondingly affects the media. ▼ Over the past thirty-five years, an increasing number of women have been working outside their homes in Bangladesh, particularly in the country's largest city Dhaka. A key factor has been the growing garments industry and rapid urbanisation. Research exploring these demographic changes reveals a complex picture of women's situations. While conditions are often extremely poor and pay is low, new forms of work provide women with opportunities that were otherwise rarely available to them and bring them into spaces that were in the past dominated by men. Selling sex demonstrates a form of employment that brings similar dilemmas; while it is often violent and highly stigmatised, women have fought for their right to engage in this type of work. This complex reality is central to the research questions of my PhD study. How do women in these different yet overlapping contexts understand their experiences and manage their identities? Have new employment opportunities and urban living situations fundamentally changed women's positions? To answer these questions, I spent fourteen months conducting ethnographic research. I began by living in an area with a low-income population and talking with women about their experiences of work. I then met with women who sold sex, visited their homes and places of work. Through observations and in-depth interviews, I was able to explore the spaces women occupied, how they managed their multiple identities and utilised their agency. I found that while there were significant social changes occurring for participants, underlining belief systems saw more gradual change. To accommodate various ideological influences, beliefs were highly complex and often seemed contradictory. I argue that women use the means available to them to manage and improve their situations within significant structural restrictions. Women outside the sex industry maintained their precarious identity as a 'good woman', while pushing boundaries and utilising opportunities. Women who sold sex capitalised on their identity as a 'bad woman' to access services and to be part of activist groups but tried to hide this identity when it was detrimental, which was generally the case. They continued to experience high levels of violence, stigma and social exclusion. In conclusion, I argue that a better understanding of women's responses to social changes and how they manage their positions is essential to work with women to improve the services and policies that affect their lives.
