▼ The
Escalation of Commitment (EC) to a new product development (NPD) project is aptly characterized as “throwing good money after bad money” because the continuation of a failing course wastes scarce resources and precludes the opportunity of investing in alternate projects. Many studies have enhanced our understanding of EC. The focus of these studies is to explain EC in behavioral terms. In addition to explaining behavior, studies on EC should focus on understanding psychological aspects associated with EC in order to provide insights concerning the processes that guide managers’ behavior. The extant research on EC suggests that managers’ perception of personal responsibility to initiate a NPD project is an antecedent of EC. However, we don’t know which psychological components of commitment are escalated. Furthermore, we don’t know when (i.e. NPD outset or post failure) these components are escalated. Researchers suggest self-justification theory as a rationale for EC to NPD when a manager is personally responsible for initiating the NPD project. Self-justification theory employs a behavioral commitment view. This view suggests that the effects of personal responsibility to initiate a project on future behavior and attitudes towards the project are reduced when rewards are associated with the personal responsibility. In fact, under the title of “Reverse Incentive Effect,” a parallel stream of research exists to explain a counterintuitive effect in which a smaller reward produces a higher effect than a larger reward. However, we don’t know which components of commitments are associated with the reverse incentive effect. The objective of this dissertation is to identify which components of commitments are escalated, when are the components escalated and which components of the commitment are involved in the reverse incentive effect. Consistent with the experimental method in EC, a 2x2 experiment design is employed in which the independent variables are personal responsibility to initiate NPD project and reward. The results of this experiment support my hypotheses and suggests 1) a differential effect of interaction between personal responsibility to initiate project and reward on components of psychological commitment at the outset of NPD project, and 2) change in the effects of interaction between the personal responsibility and rewards on the components upon potential NPD failure. Based on the empirical findings theoretical and managerial implications as well as possible future research, are discussed.

▼ Project
escalation means that a failing project is permitted to continue and good money is thrown after bad. According to survey reports, about 30% to 40% of software projects emerge
escalation phenomena. Traditional
escalation studies focused on agentâs over-committed behaviors of in-house projects. Being very popular now, outsourcing projects can be mainly influenced by its powerful stakeholders, including customer and vendor, but few studies are presented. First of all, six
escalation cases were in progresses and factors of outsourcing
escalation were abstracted, including project information management, customer satisfaction, outsourcing relationship, development risks, monitor, and project
escalation. The causal relation of outsourcing
escalation of software project is used to create a
escalation framework. This study classified four business types that have different processes of outsourcing participation, monitor, risk attitutes during project
escalation.

▼ Research investigating the underlying causes and factors involved in violence and aggression has suggested there is a tendency for aggression to escalate as a means to justify prior aggression. In addition, past research has also examined the effect of perceived similarity towards the target of aggression on intensity and escalation of aggression. This study looked at the relationship between initial level of aggression and the escalation of aggression and at perceived similarity to the target of aggression as a possible factor influencing this escalation. Individuals engaging in severe initial aggression who experience higher perceived similarity to their targets of aggression should be more prone to justifying their actions and so might escalate more. To examine this, subjects could administer any of 10 levels of negative reinforcement (insults) to a learner for incorrect responses. Half of the subjects were required to practice this procedure with a mild and half with a severe insult. Results indicated that an effect of perceived similarity emerged, with individuals using less severe insults when perceived similarity to the learner was high. Contrary to predictions, high-perceived similarity to the learner stemmed escalation for participants insulting the learner with a severe insult initially. Moreover, participants who insulted with a mild insult initially escalated in their aggression when perceived similarity was high. In addition, an interaction effect of gender and perceived similarity was found, with men engaging in more severe subsequent aggression than women when perceived similarity to the target of aggression is high. The limitations, further directions, and implications of this study are discussed.

▼ Recent tensions on the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea have led to concerns that provocative actions, such as harsh rhetoric and low-level violence, might embroil the United States in an unwanted war. The international relations literature, however, does not offer a coherent theory of provocation and crisis escalation. Instead, scholars and policymakers rely on intuition or other mechanisms of escalation, such as those based on accidents, threat perception, or imperfect signaling to explain the dangers of provocation in crises. Drawing on recent insights in social psychology and the study of resolve, this dissertation advances a novel theory of provocation that explains how provocative rhetoric and military actions can distinctly lead to unwanted crisis escalation and conflict. I test my theory at the individual level with a survey experiment and use the findings to develop three game-theoretic models that analyze how provocation affects crisis dynamics in different strategic contexts. To show that these mechanisms can significantly impact real crises, I closely examine the Sino-IndiaWar of 1962 and Sino-Soviet Border Conflict of 1969 using primary Chinese sources, and briefly review three additional cases of more recent crises. In the conclusion, I discuss the implications for coercive diplomacy and crisis management.

Sklep: Ena prvenstvenih nalog menedžmenta v socialnovarstvenih zavodih je zagotavljanje varnosti stanovalcem in zaposlenim.
Starting point, purpose: In special social care institutions, it is noticeable that the number of aggressive and violent behaviour is increasing. The phenomenon of aggressive and violent behaviour is influenced by various factors. The purpose of the research was to determine the extent to which aggressive behaviour occurs in special social welfare institution and what is the impact of risk factors such as gender, age, psychopathology of residents, openness, and overcrowding of departments and time of residence in the institution.
Methods: The research is based on the quantitative work methodology. A systematic overview and analysis of collected data from incidents lists and work schedules have been done. Only those data were included in which aggressive behaviour has accrued between the residents, to themselves or to objects in the environment. The data were statistically processed using computer SPSS and Excel programs.
Results: The results of the research have shown that aggressive and violent behaviour occurs in 13 % of all residents living in a special social welfare institution. Most aggressive and violent behaviour happens in secured departments which are linked to the fact that residents with aggressive behaviour are placed in secured departments. Men are more often violent towards others and women in contrary…

▼ Managing large capital construction projects requires the coordination of a multitude of human,
organizational, technical, and natural resources. Cost has its proven importance as the prime
factor for project success. Price
escalation is one of the wide ranging problems that the
construction industry is facing currently.
Investigation of factors that might contribute to a price
escalation is significant in order to notice
attention to specific areas of improvement for federal road construction projects in Ethiopia.
Hence, assessment of price
escalation and adjustment problems on federal road construction
projects needs to be done in order to better support the economic development. Accordingly, this
research attempts to assess causes and effects of price
escalation, to identify problems of price
escalation and adjustment and methods to manage/administer price
escalation on federal road
construction projects, which can serve as the way forward for future work in coping with these
escalations. The data required for this study were collected through self-administered open and
close ended questionnaires, desk studies/archival records (four in number) and unstructured
interviews.
The statistical method of Relative Importance Index and Spearman‟s correlation coefficient were
used to analyze the collected data through questionnaires. Based on the findings variables were
ranked according to their occurrence. In addition the respondent‟s correlation in ranking
variables was studied in order to identify the agreements between respondents.
Poor estimation, improper planning and/or improper implementation of proper planning and
project schedule changes are identified as major internal causes of price
escalation and also
increase in material cost/material price fluctuation, increase in global demand for construction
materials, fluctuation in money exchange rates and limited capacity of material producers are
identified as major external causes of price
escalation in Ethiopian federal road construction
projects.
Findings revealed that the major effects of price
escalation are higher project costs, cash flow
(project financing) problem of the projects, delay and dispute among parties. The study also
identified uncompensated increase in cost of construction materials, construction price indices may over estimate or under estimate the market conditions as at how prices have risen and
selection of the most suitable index in using inflation indices are identified as major problems of
price
escalation and adjustment in Ethiopian federal road construction projects. Finally, based on
the analysis of the results, recommendations have been proposed that enables to minimize the
problems of price
escalation and adjustment on federal road construction projects and favors the
construction industry for better performances.

cost of road projects, construction materials price such as cement, reinforcement steel
bar, bitumen, fuel, etc take the lion’s share of the overall total cost of a road construction
projects. The ever increasing cost of these construction inputs supplemented with market
inflation and other unforeseen national and international factors are hypothetically
believed to have strongly contributed to road construction project contracts price
inflation.
There has been considerable road project price
escalation in Ethiopia over the past years
that was believed by most stakeholders to have impacted the overall Road Sector
Development Program (RSDP) of the country. Road project prices especially over the
recent years have been increasing at an alarming rate that the
escalation has been neither
linearly compatible with the increasing market indicators nor tangibly justified by
concerned stakeholders or researchers.
Due to the fact, there is a speculation created among the stakeholders whether the
planned government’s budget allocations are sufficient enough to cover anticipated
sector programs as a result of periodical high tender price offers received that frequently
exceeds pre-tender engineering estimates. This is presumed to jeopardize the number of road
improvement works that can be achieved for the planned budget year.
This research focuses and deals with an in depth assessment of the causes and effects of price
escalation of federal road contracts in Ethiopia. As a baseline study, the research went
through briefly into the historic study of the trend of price
escalation of road contracts in our
neighboring east and sub-Saharan African countries to support the final outcome of the
assessment. The objective of this research is to identify the possible root causes and effects of price
escalation of federal road contracts in Ethiopia so that an awareness of the causes would be
created amongst road clients, consultants, contractors and stakeholders of the road
construction industry so that timely remedial measures would be taken to mitigate the
resulting problems in due possible time.
Hence to address the problem, a questionnaire was designed and disseminated to contractors,
consultants and employers involved in the road construction industry and a supplementary
desk study was conducted on price
escalation of federal road contracts in Ethiopia to assist
the survey study.
Based on the findings of the research using simple statistical approaches, Likert’s scale and
Kendall coefficient of concordance, it’s been possible to conclude that, cost inflation of

▼ The construction industry plays a central role in the creation of any nation’s wealth. For developing economies, it forms the backbone of most industries. Cost escalation, schedule overruns and quality shortfalls in construction projects often offset the intended contribution of the industry to the economy. The aim of the study reported in this dissertation was to establish significant causes of cost escalation, schedule overruns and quality shortfalls and propose mechanisms that could be used to systematically address the causal factors.Using a detailed literature review, structured interviews and questionnaire surveys, the results of the study confirmed the prevalence of cost escalation and schedule delays on construction projects in Zambia. The study identified: insufficient initial analysis of costs; change orders; inflation; and schedule overruns to be the most significant causal factors of cost escalation. Financial difficulties on the part of contractors; change orders; poor sub-contractor performance; and changes in drawings or specifications were found to be the major causes of schedule overruns. On the other hand, the most significant causal factors for quality shortfalls were identified to be: inadequate and inconsistent release of funds by clients; poor financial management by contractors; long lapse between feasibility study and implementation of projects; inadequate supervision; and incompetence or lack of capacity by contractors. The study also identified a knowledge gap in project managers in construction management. It was established that the Client Satisfaction Enhancement Flowchart Model (CSEFM) that was developed during the study could be used to improve project delivery and satisfaction enhancement factors in terms of their relative importance. Appropriate project management practices and training for successful execution of construction projects have been recommended, especially in developing economies like Zambia.

▼ This thesis is a case study of software project
escalation and termination. According to domestic and international literature, software projects often faces
escalation phenomenon. Therefore, this thesis studied three cases of information-system development from two different areas. The first two cases are about A and B natural gas companiesâgeographic information system. Company Aâs geographic information system lasted for eight years and ended with termination. Company Bâs geographic information system lasted for ten years. During these years, company B had changed three different software solution providers, but the project is still pending until today. The third case is about Company Câs ERP system development. The project was initiated in December of 2002 after signing the contract. It was targeted to finish in 2004. Until July, 2007, this project is not completely finished yet. From the above three cases, the causes of software project
escalation and termination were investigated. What leads to the
escalation of software project? Why is the software project terminated? What is the root cause? This research integrated the theoretical framework of project
escalation and termination from literature. The framework addresses four key factors of
escalation: (1) Project factor (2) Psychological factor (3) Social factor (4) Organizational factor (Staw and Ross, 1987); and also two key factors for termination: (1) Economic factor and management factor behind it (2) Technical factor and management factor behind it(Ewusi-Mensah and Przasnyski, 1991). Based on these factors, this study finds out affecting elements behind those factors, and then verifies and modifies the research framework. Finally, this thesis brings up conclusion and suggestions, hoping to provide managers with some advices when developing a new software project, in order to minimize the loss caused by
escalation and termination.

▼ Information systems project management has historically been a problematic area. One of the reasons for this has been the issue of
escalation where resources continue to be committed to a failing course of action. While many causes of
escalation have been proposed, this dissertation investigates one possible cause: that the project manager may not hear, ignores or overrules a report of bad news to continue a failing course of action: the Deaf Effect response to bad news reporting. This effect has not been previously studied within the information systems literature. In this dissertation, the Deaf Effect is examined through a series of three laboratory experiments and a case study. It finds that in a conducive environment, where the bad news reporter is not seen as credible, and the risk of project failure is seen as low, decision makers tend to view the report of bad news as irrelevant and thus ignore or overrule the report of bad news and continue the current course of action. Role Prescription of the bad news reporter, illusion of control and a perception of a highly politicized environment are factors that also increase the occurrence of the Deaf Effect.

▼ The diffusion of sales force automation (SFA) systems has enabled a far more systematic approach to sales force management. This opens new avenues for the academic study of the industrial selling process as well: new arenas for investigation, new windows into salesperson behavior, and new methodological pitfalls. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a better understanding of SFA from an academic perspective, and then apply these insights to resolve gaps in our understanding of how sales forces behave and how they might be better managed. To do this, three areas of analysis are explored: methodological, behavioral, and theoretical.

▼ The most common cyber-attack vector is exploit of software vulnerability. Despite much efforts toward building secure software, software systems of even modest complexity still routinely have serious vulnerabilities. More alarmingly, even the trusted computing base (e.g. OS kernel) still contains vulnerabilities that would allow attackers to subvert security mechanisms such as the application sandbox on smartphones. Among all vulnerabilities, memory corruption is one of the most ancient, prevalent, and devastating vulnerabilities. This thesis proposed three projects on mitigating this threat. There are three popular ways to exploit a memory corruption vulnerability – attacking the code (a.k.a. code injection attack), the control data (a.k.a. control-flow hijacking attack), and the non-control data (a.k.a. data-oriented attack). Theoretically, code injection attack can be prevented with the executable XOR writable policy; but in practice, this policy is undermined by another important technique – dynamic code generation (e.g. JIT engines). In the first project, we first showed that this conflict is actually non-trivial to resolve, then we introduced a new design paradigm to fundamentally solve this problem, by relocating the dynamic code generator to a separate process. In the second project, we focused on preventing data-oriented attacks against operating system kernel. Using privilege
escalation attacks as an example, we (1) demonstrated that data-oriented attacks are realistic threats and hard to prevent; (2) discussed two important challenges for preventing such attacks (i.e., completeness and performance); and (3) presented a system that combines program analysis techniques and system designs to solve these challenges. During these two projects, we found that lacking sufficient hardware support imposes many unnecessary difficulties in building robust and efficient defense mechanisms. In the third project, we proposed HDFI (hardware-assisted data-flow isolation) to overcome this limitation. HDFI is a new fine-grained isolation mechanism that enforces isolation at the machine word granularity, by virtually extending each memory unit with an additional tag that is defined by data-flow. This capability allows HDFI to enforce a variety of security models such as the Biba Integrity Model and the Bell – LaPadula Model. For demonstration, we developed and ported several security mechanisms to leverage HDFI, including stack protection, standard library enhancement, virtual function table protection, code pointer protection, kernel data protection, and information leak prevention. The evaluation results showed that HDFI is easy to use, imposes low performance overhead, and allows us to create simpler and more secure solutions.

▼ The problem of price volatility as it pertains to material and labor is a major source of risk and financial distress for all the participants in the construction industry. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to address this problem from both viewpoints of risk analysis and risk management. This dissertation offers three independent papers addressing this goal. In the first paper using the Engineering News Record Construction Cost Index (ENR CCI), a predictive model is developed. The model uses General Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (GARCH) approach which facilitates both forecasting of the future values of the CCI, and capturing and quantifying its volatilities as a separate measure of risk through the passage of time. GARCH (1,1) was recognized as the best model. The maximum volatility was observed in October 2008 and results showed persistent volatility of the CCI in the case of external economic shocks. In the second paper using the same cost index (ENR CCI), the methodology of the first paper is integrated with Value at Risk concept to cautiously estimate the escalation factor in both short and long-term construction projects for avoiding cost overrun due to price volatilities and inflation. Proposed methodology was also applied to two construction projects in which the estimated escalation factors revealed satisfactory performances in terms of accuracy and reliability. Finally, the third paper addresses the price volatility from the view of risk management. It entails two objectives of identifying and ranking of potential management strategies. The former is achieved via in-depth literature review and questionnaire interviews with industry experts. The latter is done using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Quantitative risk management methods, alike those offered in foregoing papers are considered as one of the candidates in dealing with the price volatility risk. Cost, risk allocation and duration were perceived as the most significant criteria (project indicators) in construction projects. Also, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) with respect to project duration; quantitative risk management methods with respect to the cost; and Price Adjustment Clauses (PAC) with respect to the risk allocation, were recognized as the top strategies to manage the risk of price volatilities.

▼ Successful management of capital investment projects is vital to organisational performance. However, research shows that managers are prone to continue investment in projects in the face of significant negative accounting feedback – this is known as the ‘escalation of commitment’ phenomenon. Escalation behaviour is undesirable as it diverts resources from more economically valuable investments and can lead to sub-optimal project outcomes.
This thesis reports two experiments that investigate how four factors can help reduce escalation of commitment to unprofitable capital investment projects. Study One examines how the type of consultant (internal versus external) and the nature of their assigned purpose influences their willingness to communicate project concerns to the senior management of an organisation. Results from this first Study show that even though consultants may recognise problems with a project, communication of these to senior management is not necessarily automatic. Specifically, Study One shows that external consultants are generally more willing than internal consultants to communicate concerns to senior management. Furthermore, an interaction is found between the internal consultants and their assigned purpose, where internal consultants assigned a purpose that specifically requires communication of concerns are less willing to communicate than internal consultants who are not specifically assigned do so.
Study Two examines how different moods (positive versus negative) interact with information presentation sequence (numerical information presented last versus narrative information presented last) to influence an external consultant’s recommendation to continue an unprofitable project. Results from Study Two show that consultants in a positive mood spend significantly less time processing available project information during project evaluation than those in a negative mood. Furthermore, consultants in a positive mood show greater variability in their recommendation depending on differences in information presentation sequence. Specifically, results show that consultants in a positive mood are more likely to recommend an escalation of commitment where narrative information is presented last than where numerical information is presented last. In contrast, consultants in a negative mood show greater consistency in their recommendations, and are not affected by differences in information presentation.

▼ This study focuses on the influence of normative pressure within Venture Capital syndicates that lead organizational decision makers to avoid terminating unsuccessful investments, so called ‘escalation of commitment’ or ‘throwing good money after bad’.
Venture Capital organizations tend to invest in syndicate form, because of the risk involved in investing in start-up companies. Investing in syndicate form has many advantages, like improving the performance of Venture Capital organizations and increasing the survival chances of the portfolio companies they have invested in. To be invited to join a syndicate, a Venture Capital organization must have a good network, a good reputation and must be reliable. The reputation and reliability of a Venture Capital organization determine the status of a Venture Capital organization. This status plays a role in choosing future syndicate partners. Status can be determined by measuring the position of the organization within a broader network. The more central within the network, the higher the status.
Within syndicates the different syndicate parties have to comply with formal and informal rules of engagement. Formal rules are sanctioned by formal contracts. Informal rules are sanctioned by the logic of social obligations. If the accepted informal rule is consistency and decisiveness, like ‘sticking to their guns’, decision makers may feel the pressure to continue investing even after they have received negative feedback. This is called normative pressure. Not all organizations experience the same amount of normative pressure. Some organizations are more sensitive to normative pressure than others, this depends on the status of the organization.
The literature did not give a clear picture of the influence of normative pressure on escalation of commitment. Some scientists claimed that normative pressure has a positive effect on escalation of commitment, where others claimed there was no relationship at all. In the investigation on normative pressure and escalation of commitment, also the role of status was frequently involved. Which role status plays was not clear either. Some studies stated that high status organizations are more sensitive to normative pressure, while other studies stated that high status organizations are less sensitive to normative pressure. This conclusive and contradicting statements suggested further research.
A qualitative research was conducted in which 3 Venture Capital syndicates consisting of 8 Venture Capital organizations were investigated. Each Venture Capital syndicate invested in a portfolio company and the presence of escalation of commitment was determined. Professionals of these Venture Capital organizations were interviewed on the subject of normative pressure. Finally the network of these 8 Venture Capital organizations was mapped out to determine the status of each Venture Capital organization.
A positive relationship between normative pressure and escalation of commitment was found. The majority of the Venture Capital organizations…

Escalation of Commitment in Temporary Organisations : A Case Study of the 1996 Mt. Everest Disaster.

▼ In an organisation, escalation of commitment represents behaviour of decision makers who become committed to failing courses of action. This behaviour usually derives from the decision makers’ reluctance to acknowledge their failed action in the initial allotment of time and resources, and thus taking actions to manifest their prior decision were correct and they will be achieving the planned goal. In a single day of 1996 during a climbing expedition destined to summit Mt Everest, eight people lost their lives, including the climbing team leaders, in part due to the decision made that led to the teams to engage in escalation behaviour. The climbing teams in the 1996 Mt Everest expedition serve as examples of temporary organisations in an extreme setting. The purpose of the research is to explore insights on the aspects promoting escalation on the Mt Everest tragedy and shed some light into how escalation manifests in temporary organisations. The factors that might be found will be applicable only to this particular case; nevertheless they might contribute on the overall development of how escalation comes about in temporary organisations. The research question of this study is how aspects promoting escalation where present in the 1996 Mt. Everest expedition? For many years different theories attempted to explain the factors that promote escalation behaviour. The most important theories were combined together into a theoretical framework developed by Staw and Ross (1987a), which contains four major determinants of commitment in escalation: project, psychological, social and organisational. This framework is applied in this qualitative study based on the 1996 Mt Everest case. The study was executed through the analysis of the firsthand accounts of the survivors and observers present on the mountain that year as well as mass media outputs, the framework of escalation was used as an assistance tool for making sense of the findings the research may produce. The results of the study managed to place the line of events in the determinants framework and identified all four types of determinants of commitment taking place through the progress of the expedition. A new organisational determinant of commitment was found (pursuit of enterprise growth) which yielded significant practical implications and might also lead the way for future research on escalation of commitment in temporary organisations.

▼ The sub-state nationalist conflicts in both Northern Ireland and the Basque Country have undergone significant de-escalation. However, while the transformation of the conflict in Northern Ireland involved a negotiated agreement with the host state, that of the conflict in the Basque Country did not. Thus, if the shape of the outcome represents the dependent variable, exploring these transformations requires an examination of three interrelated independent variable groupings. The first explores the operational capacities of each movement through an examination of their resources, and how access to these resources may have changed over time and impacted the overall strategies. Secondly, an examination of state responses to both the conflict itself as well as to changing movement strategies is undertaken. Finally, the third grouping seeks to explore the dynamics the above variables have on the way in which the sub-state nationalist organizations are led and directed. This project found that while both the Republican Movement and the MLNV experienced motivating pulls toward de-escalation and pursuit of movement goals increasingly dominated by institutional politics (Grouping 1), the differences in the responses of the host States (Grouping 2), and the organizational structures through which movement assessments and decisions are funnelled (Grouping 3), allowed for the MLNV to make the more radical commitment to de-escalation in the absence of a negotiated settlement, while the Republican Movement was able to move the bulk of, but not all, its membership into a negotiated agreement with the British state. The Republican Movement experienced greater optimism for and motivation in negotiations than did the MLNV, while the MLNV experienced greater motivation toward de-escalation more generally.

▼ State agencies use considerable amounts of asphalt, fuel, concrete and steel in the construction of roads and bridges each year. The cost of construction materials fluctuates during the period of a construction contract and some materials have historically been more volatile than others. During times of price volatility, methods of lessening the financial risk to contractors and state agencies are important. In the past decade, petroleum products (e.g. liquid asphalt binder and fuel) and reinforcing steel experienced considerable swings in cost over relatively short periods of time. There are several methods that can be used to mitigate these risks including but not limited to fixed price contracts, stockpiling materials, and the use of price adjustment clauses. The most common method that has been adopted at most state agencies is the use of price adjustment clauses. This study analyzes price adjustment clauses currently in use by United States Departments of Transportation to determine the factors that most affect reimbursement. This study also seeks to assist the South Carolina Department of Transportation better understand the benefits and risks involved with price adjustment clauses (PACs) of various construction materials.

▼ Training for law enforcement on effective ways of
intervening in mental health crises is limited. What is available
tends to be costly for implementation, labor-intensive, and
requires officers to opt-in. DEFUSE, an interactive online training
program, was specifically developed to train law enforcement on
mental illness and de-escalation skills. Derived from a stress
inoculation framework, the curriculum provides education, skills
training, and rehearsal; it is brief, cost-effective, and scalable
to officers across the country. Participants were randomly assigned
to either the experimental or delayed treatment control conditions.
A multivariate analysis of variance yielded a significant
treatment-by-repeated-measures interaction and univariate analyses
confirmed improvement on all of the measures (e.g., empathy,
stigma, self-efficacy, behavioral outcomes, knowledge). Replication
dependent t-test analyses conducted on the control condition
following completion of DEFUSE confirmed significant improvement on
four of the measures and marginal significance on the fifth.
Participant responses to BPAD video vignettes revealed significant
differences in objective behavioral proficiency for those
participants who completed the online course. DEFUSE is a powerful
tool for training law enforcement on mental illness and effective
strategies for intervening in mental health crises. Considerations
for future study are discussed.

De-Escalation in Police-Citizen Encounters: A Mixed Methods

▼ There is demand for police reform in the United States
to reduce use of force and bias, and to improve police-citizen
relationships. Many believe de-escalation should be a more central
feature of police training and practice. It is suggested that
improving officers’ communication and conflict resolution skills
will temper police-citizen interactions and reduce police use of
force, and that such a change will improve citizen trust in the
police. To date, however, de-escalation training has not spread
widely across agencies, and de-escalation as a strategy has not
been studied. Without an evidence-based understanding of these
concepts, de-escalation training will proceed blindly, if at all.
Accordingly, this dissertation represents one of the first
empirical studies of de-escalation in police work. The author
completed this study as an embedded researcher in the Spokane (WA)
Police Department, and it proceeds in two parts. Part 1 was
exploratory and qualitative, consisting of in-depth interviews
(N=8) and a focus group (N=1) with eight highly skilled police
de-escalators. These officers were nominated by peers as the best
among them at de-escalating difficult encounters with citizens. The
results in Part 1 explore officers’ perceptions of de-escalation
and offer a definition of de-escalation as well as a description of
de-escalation tactics. In Part 2, the author systematically
observed the concepts developed in part 1 during 35 ride-alongs
with 29 police officers, including the peer nominated officers
(N=131 police-citizen encounters). This phase of the research
investigated whether characteristics of officers, citizens, and
situations are associated with de-escalation use, and de-escalation
effectiveness. Implications from these findings are drawn for
police practice, theory, and research methods. This dissertation is
a launching point for empirical research on de-escalation in police
work.

▼ The presence of burglary charges in the criminal career of a male sex offender has been found as a valid empirical predictor of the seriousness of the criminal career of the offender. Burglary is systematically classified as a property offense in studies about the criminal careers of sex offenders. This approach ignores the possible sexual and versatile dimensions of burglary and hides a possible escalation of the offender toward sexual aggression in his incidents of burglary. This thesis remedies these gaps and investigates the various components of, and evidence of escalation in, incidents of burglary.
The sample of offenders is composed of 281 sex offenders with at least one incident of burglary. A second sample contains 762 separate incidents of burglary committed by these offenders. The results indicate a variety of characteristics in incidents of burglary. A typology is developed to represent these elements: nonsexual, covert sexual, overt sexual, and versatile. The thesis analyses the differences in the criminal careers of those sex offenders. Finally, the results also show various forms of escalation in incidents of burglary that are correlated with more violent criminal histories. This thesis discusses the implications of these findings with regards to the previous literature, particularly regarding specialization and versatility.

▼ The central goal of this project is to better understand the relationship between civil war and repression at each phase of the "civil-war life-cycle," which is composed of the
escalation and onset of civil war, the war itself, and the post-war period. The project then seeks to understand the role of repression in civil war onset, where repression is argued to be either a permissive condition or a direct cause of civil war, where the role of repression is tied to what type of civil war occurs. As a permissive condition, repression essentially provides the opportunity for a group to carry out an attack, invasion, mutiny, and the like. During other conflicts, repression may be a direct cause of the war. The repression of protest movements may lead those groups to view "normal," non-violent political channels as closed, while also increasing grievances and therefore their willingness to fight. This direct mechanism along with the
escalation process that leads to civil war is explored in depth, using data from the 2011 Arab Spring. This project also seeks to explain when conflicts are likely to be accompanied by harsh repression and the targeting of civilians, and to address whether that strategy is effective. It is argued that insurgencies rely on civilian populations for material and non-material support; if the government targets this resource pool then it may be able to undercut that lifeline and thus the military effectiveness of the group. Yet, as repression is costly this is only a strategy likely to be employed when the rebels are gaining ground, when they are relatively strong and militarily effective. As such, governments that employ repression as a war-time strategy are likely beginning from a point of weakness or disadvantage. It is thus further argued that the "gamble" of repression is not likely to reverse the government's fortunes; rather, wars marked by high levels of repression are most likely to end in stalemate. Finally, the use of, or the restraint from using, repression in post-war periods is also explored. Little attention has thus far been paid to the use of repression in post-conflict states, despite the growing literature on the consequences of conflict and the importance of this time for rebuilding and establishing peace. Here, the transformation of the war-time threat, together with various constraints against using repression in the post-war period, are considered.

Lean Startup theory (LST) has been growing in popularity in entrepreneurship worldwide. LST is a theory for startup companies to reduce costs and time, and for entrepreneurs to create a process that eases decision-making. In this study, links betweenproblems of decision making (overconfidence, prospect theory, the halo effect and escalation of commitment) and LST has been examined through semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs in Sweden. Furthermore, general lessons from the cases has been studied to illustrate advantages and weaknesses of LST. As pioneers of LST argue that the theory is suitable for all sectors and industries, this claim has also been examined. The study found that LST processes counteract the negative effects associated with overconfidence and the halo effect, but cannot handle the problems that areintroduced in conjunction with the prospect theory and escalation of commitment. Furthermore, the study reaches the conclusion that LST requires a fit with each startup company, and functions best in sectors and industries where the entry barrier of capital requirement is low.

▼ Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among
Canadian men. The standard treatment in high-risk category is
radical radiation, with androgen suppression treatment (AST).
Significant disease progression is reported despite this approach.
Radiation dose escalation has been shown to improve disease-free
survival; however, it results in higher toxicities.
Hypofractionated radiation schedules (larger dose each fraction in
shorter overall treatment time) are expected to deliver higher
biological doses. A hypofractionated scheme was used in this study
to escalate radiation doses with AST. Treatment was well tolerated
acutely. Early results of self-administered quality of life
reported by patients shows a decrease in QOL which is comparable to
other treatment schedules. Significant positional variation of the
prostate was observed during treatment. Therefore, we suggest daily
target verification to avoid a target miss. Initial late effects
are reasonable and early treatment outcomes are promising. Longer
follow-up is required for full outcomes assessments.

▼ For decades, men in South Africa and many African
countries have enjoyed the role of being the main providers and
protectors of the family. The concept, “head of the family” implied
a lot in terms of playing a leading role in the family. A man
literarily became the main provider of the family while the woman
was the family maker, i.e. looked after the family. Since the new
dispensation in South Africa, the economic situation of women has
improved tremendously. The campaign for the equality through the
Gender Equality process and the Feminine Theology has seen many
women coming out of the oppression of economy and climbing the
ladders of prosperity and better live. On the hand, the policy of
gender equality seems to have negative effects on the lives of men
who had the privilege of having better salaries and enjoying the
economic authority and being the major breadwinners in the family.
Before this, many women’s salaries were just an augmentation of the
husband’s salary and most of the financial transactions in the
family were done in the name of the husband. Women could not buy on
credit without the authorization of the husbands. With the new
dispensation, all those barriers have been removed and women have
been empowered to participate in the financial transactions without
getting authorizations of their spouses. Once men lose their jobs
or discover that their wives are earning far more than they do,
they get depressed and their lives deteriorate hopelessly. They
become alcoholics and sometimes take their own lives or decide to
wipe out the whole family. This situation does not only confine
itself to married couples, but to single men as well, especially
the young ones. Many young women have the opportunity of going
through tertiary education and are therefore earning better
salaries and can afford to buy houses and cars independently from
male counterparts. They do not need the security and comfort of men
and can live on their own. It is because of the
escalation of the
phenomenon of traumatised men that the researcher was challenged to
want to study it further, to see how prevalent it is and work with
men to make them aware of it and to find ways of accepting it as a
reality. The researcher further worked on a strategy to develop a
counselling model or strategies for the Church to help the affected
men and to prepare those who have not yet been involved to be
ready.

▼ This study proposes to look for a relationship between the de-escalation techniques and the amount and severity of aggressive behaviors in students who have an Emotional/Behavioral Disorder. The Crisis Prevention intervention teaches strategies that may help provide students with EBD the ability to de-escalate situations so they can function in the regular education setting with their peers and later on to function within society as adults. To implement this study each time a student got referred to the EBD room for a behavioral issue the special education teacher implemented CPI?s strategies to help the student de-escalate his/her behavior. The teacher recorded the amount of time it took for the student to de-escalate inappropriate behaviors and the level of aggressiveness that the behavior had escalated too. When the student was ready to self-compose, accept responsibility for behaviors, and the student accepted and followed through on the consequences for behaviors the student went back to the mainstream setting. Results of this study indicated that there is a highly significant correlation between the Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies that were implemented and a decrease in time spent in the EBD room and time spent at a crisis level.

▼ This thesis investigates the implementation of the ‘Team-Teach’ behaviour support training programme in New Zealand. This school-wide training package develops generalised skills in behaviour management and de-escalation for students who are exhibiting extreme and violent behaviour. The Team-Teach framework also provides training in physical interventions that are designed for use in schools, and with children. The legal issues associated with the use of physical intervention are also addressed during the training in addition to recommended best practice for the development of policies and procedures. Prior evidence suggests that behaviour support training with a physical intervention overlay can result in increased confidence and safety for staff members and a reduction in the levels of physical intervention and incidents.
The purpose of this study was to investigate participant opinion of Team-Teach training immediately after course delivery and further into implementation in addition to an investigation into the barriers and facilitating factors affecting the impact of Team-Teach within two New Zealand special schools.
The research employs a mixed method pragmatic paradigm utilising document analysis, questionnaire and interview survey to ascertain the impact and implementation issues related to Team-Teach training. Quantitative analysis of course feedback ratings and attitudinal scales were combined with the qualitative thematic analysis of written comments and interview transcripts to inform the discussion.
The results present a positive endorsement of Team-Teach training both immediately after the training course and further into implementation and compare favourably with the findings of previous international studies. Research participants reported a significant increase in personal confidence and a perceived reduction in incidences of extreme behaviour and physical intervention. The perceptions of research participants to initial training in New Zealand varied considerably between training providers and there were also notable differences between groups in different work roles and with different levels of experience. Research participants expressed concern over the lack of adaptation of the Team-Teach syllabus to embrace the New Zealand context.
Research participants endorsed use of the ‘positive handling plan’ (PHP) as a way to legitimatise and standardise practice in difficult situations. It was however clear that neither school had developed genuine parental partnerships in either the creation or effective communication of these plans. There was a general agreement that parents should be able to access Team-Teach training but significant concerns were highlighted over how this could be achieved in practice.
Research participants endorsed the Team-Teach model of training ‘in-house’ tutors to provide contextual and responsive internal capacity. There was a general agreement that the physical interventions taught were effective and appropriate for use with children. Participants clearly expressed…
