▼ My research considers how early medieval authors used representations of sexuality to produce English understandings of race and nation. While medievalists have written a great deal about how sexual practices, particularly sex between men, were used to form individual sexual identities, scholars have paid far less attention to how English authors used such practices to catalogue and classify people into larger group identities, such as races or nations. I argue that both clerical and secular authors adopted sexual moralization for nationalist purposes, often pressing into service literary genres initially formed outside of England, such as elegy, penitential literature, theology, biography, and riddles. English authors martialed the “foreignness” of texts and genres from Irish, Welsh, Byzantine, Northern European, and Continental sources to license their own designations of sexual practices as markers of racial identity that indicated where one fell on the imagined hierarchy running from sinner to saved. Consequently, sexual practice became a shorthand for designating who deserved to be included in the English nation—a category commensurate with being saved—and who needed to be cast out. In a period where British, Welsh, Anglo-Saxon, and Danish forces staged competing claims to the British Isles, authors sorted out these claims by fabricating a race called “Anglo-Saxon” out of the various invading tribes of Angles, Saxons, and Jutes and then framing the Anglo-Saxon race as coterminous with the English nation. Using sexual practice as a marker of this race made the race divinely sanctioned and moral; race was an essential trait – yet one located in the condition of the soul rather than in the color of the body.

▼ In my thesis I shall elaborate on how the self is constructed in Modernism. Based on Virginia Woolf’s novel The Waves my inquiry adresses the question: according to Woolf, is there a coherent Modern identity or, instead of complete structures, we should rather search for deconstructed, constantly fluctuating and dissipating ones? Drawing upon Bataille’s notion of
eroticism, I will investigate in Woolf’s novel the primordial forces from which the self originates and I will also examine how the self is modulated in relation with ’the other’. Mainly through an examination of Bernard’s inner voice, sensations and impressions will lead us to explore Woolf’s concept of the world, its layered existence and the motif of ’singularity’ versus ’alterity’. Besides the question of an autonomous self, the book makes us focus on the notion of human relationships and on how identity is modulated along and together with them. Woolf applies several metaphors throught the narrative, from among which I will look at only the most prominent ones. Apart from the motif of the sea, the fish, the drop and the waves, Woolf’s colour-symbolism and recurring passages also provide us with an insight into her vision of the self. Finally, to give a clearer understanding of Woolf’s notion of the self as presented in The Waves I will also juxtapose Woolf’s approach with Georges Bataille’s theory of closure, T. S. Eliot’s concept of tradition and with J. Hillis Miller’s image of anastomosis.

▼ This dissertation analyzes the (ab)use of politics and
eroticism within the framework of the Transition to democracy in Spain, its social and cultural impact—on literature, film, music, and popular media—, and its consequences. After a period of nearly four decades, when the country was subjected to a totalitarian regime, Spanish society underwent a process of democratic restoration. As a result, the two topics considered taboo during almost forty years of repression—i.e., politics and sexuality/eroticism—, gushed out fiercely. Every aspect of culture was influenced by and intrinsically linked to them. However, while we have been offered a more or less global approach to the Transition—the Transition as a whole—, and some studies have focused on diverse areas, no research to date has covered in depth the significance of those issues during that historical moment.
Considering the facts stated above, it was imperative to conduct a more detailed analysis of the influence of both
eroticism and politics on the cultural production of the Transition from different perspectives. Although the academic intelligentsia has often rejected them as expressions of mass culture, we must consider Pierre Bourdieu’s theories—in line with the tradition of classical sociology, that includes science, law, and religion, together with artistic activities—, Michel Foucault’s ideas on sexuality, and New Historicism, examining texts and their contexts.
This work concludes that the (ab)use of both subjects during the Spanish Transition was a reaction to a repressive condition. It led to extremes, to societal transgression and, in most cases, to the objectification of women because of the impositions of a patriarchal society. It was, however, part of a learning and, in a sense, cathartic process that led, eventually, to the reestablishment of the status quo, to a more equitable and multicultural society where men, women, and any political or sexual tendencies are respected—at least, in theory.

▼ The ornament in visual arts a pictorial element that functions as a complement or beauty enhancement in a visual composition - is considered the most banal, and even disposable aspect of images. But this superficiality is only apparent, masking a complexity that unfolds in a series of formal, symbolic and theoretical questions. In this way, the ornament can be thought of as a superficial abbyss, and the questions it raises may be suggested in pairs of conceptual oppositions, which can only be resolved through paradox. Thus, this work consists of a series of essays, each starting out with an image whose ornaments referr to the conceptual opposition in question. The discussions are then illustrated and enriched with the addition of other images, forming anachronic series. Through these ornaments, issues of art history are explored, like that of the ornament as filling - based on the theoretical literature produced in this respect, particularly in the second half of the nineteenth century, by authors such as Riegl, Wornum and Goodyear - of luxury and expenditure - based on literature produced in first half of the twentieth century by names such as Bataille, Caillois and Loos - and eroticism - point of confluence of the previous discussions

▼ This thesis considers anxieties and concepts of agency related to femininity as represented through the beautiful and the grotesque, and the tensions that manifest when these two states coalesce. Reviewing dominant anti-fashion/beauty rhetoric that rose to prominence with second-wave feminism establishes a framework for understanding the persistence of Western culture’s fraught relationship with women’s cultivation of image and sexual appeal. Conversely, examining third and fourth-wave feminism’s more holistic embrace of fashion presents an alternate viewpoint that justifies the agential power of knowing engagement with contemporary systems of dress and beautification. This is supported by theories of performativity of gender. Similarly, highlighting Western culture’s historic belief that women’s bodies exist as innately abject provides insight into enduring anxieties towards the corporeal female form constituted as grotesque. In contrast, referencing scholarly theories that frame the carnivalesque female grotesque, including the active display of erotic will, as a mode of liberating female bodily expression, helps support arguments for the grotesque’s self-affirming potential. Consideration of philosophical arguments that demonstrate the value of the erotic and its connection with the abject assists in reasoning the link between personal sovereignty, erotic pleasure and transgression. Examination of select artistic examples helps draw even greater attention to the tensions that reside in dominant attitudes towards representations of femininity today.
The studio practice consists of two short films buttressed by a selection of photographic works. These artworks use the subject of the self to explore concerns of fantastical, performative self-transformation to reflect on the polymorphic nature of femininity. Like the work critiqued in the thesis, the studio research similarly evokes aesthetics of the sumptuous, alluring and repellent relating to style, location, materiality and the female body. Together, the written thesis and creative studio outcomes aid appreciation of the semiotic value of this ambiguous yet powerful mode of representation.

▼ Photography and painting have been posited as antagonistic mediums since the former’s inception in the 19th century, and despite generations of artists working across the mediums and disavowing the divide, it still looms large in our cultural imagination. This paper discusses the history of photography and painting as critical adversaries and practical allies, from both a historical and conceptual perspective, with a final segue to the history of gendered looking in art, and the rarity of a ‘female gaze’.
My master’s work comprises a series of paintings that are in conversation with photographs I have taken of my partner sleeping. Using intimate portraits in a combination of painting and photography I attempt to draw out dissonant attitudes to authenticity, artistic value and the ‘reality content’ of images. The work interrogates our disparate reactions between photographs and paintings that recreate photographs, using the unique strengths of each to challenge and complicate our instinctive ‘reading’ of the image. They are diverse in style and presentation, while constant in subject. The examination/exhibition will take place in June at the SCA Galleries, and will consist of at least ten paintings on various media (including but not limited to paper, glass, aluminium, and wood).

Portuguese Poet Florbela Espanca (1984 1930) lived and produced her literary work during a period in which, on the one hand, the ideals of an innovative and irreverent movement were being fomented led by Fernando Pessoa, Almada Negreiros and Mário de Sá-Carneiro , on the other hand, Portugal was still dominated by a conservative and authoritarian thought, anchored in a bourgeois-christian ideology. Inserted in an unfavorable social context to the expression of the female sexual impulse, poet Florbela then appears with an innovative speech as threatening the sexual organization of the Portuguese society. This way, considering the relations between the poetic text and the historical-social context, the aim of this work is to present a reading upon the Eroticism in The Flowering Heath (2005) as a way to contravene the borders given to the sexual phenomenon. For this reason, we will mainly resort to the concepts developed on the approach of Georges Bataille The Eroticism (2004) and also by Octavio Paz The Double Flame: Love and Eroticism (2001)

This research aims at investigating the eroticism construction sense in Cazuzas song, especially, thorough the enunciator subject. The shortage of studies concerning the work of this artist in a linguistic context is what makes this research pioneer in the Brazilian musical field. The corpus is composed of 10 songs, in a chronological order of Cazuzas productions. All this production translates the singular tone of the eroticism revealed by the poet who stands up in the scene of the epoch. The first objective is to develop a linguistic-discursive analysis about the construction forms of the eroticism sense, by the subject, in Cazuzas songs to, then, separate the following ends: to identify the subject importance in the dialogic process of language; to admit the relevance of the voices in the eroticism construction sense and assimilate the ideological interference in the selected songs. The theoretical axis is based in Bakhtins socio-interactionism (1997) that works with the dialogical subject in a purely social perspective, in which characterizes the voices that speak in the discourses pronounced by the subject. The analysis demonstrates that the eroticism present in this artists songs naked familiar and personal values intrinsic in man and society, putting them as one beings truth. The conclusion points to a new direction of linguistic analysis from the song gender as also reveals the subject role in the moment that the eroticism is announced in the discourses, as to personal or social order.

At a time when the books about the Arab-Islamic societies show women with burquc and veils in their covers, it is necessary to seek for subsidies that sustain the discussion about sexuality and misogyny. This paper will discuss how the sexual and erotic sources of the classic Arab-Islamic society (XII and XIII centuries) think about the religion and the feminine. After a systematising of the premisses of the Koran about the sexuality and about the woman, two erotic-sexuals texts will be analyzed, As Fontes do Prazer, from Al-Sayyid Hrn Ibn ©usayn Al-Maæzmi - probably written in the XII century AD/VI H. -, and Les Delices des coeurs, Ce que lon ne trouve en aucun livre, from A¬mad al-Tf - produced in the XIII century AD/VII H. Being the medicine a place of dialogue for these works, the medicals indications about the body will be questioned from the work (Al-Qnn f Al-Æibb), The Canon of Medicine of Ibn Sina

Eroticism is the main theme in Caio Fernando Abreus works. In most of his books, the author presents characters that deal with a dominant desire, but also face the impossibility of its total fruition. This dissertation proposes an analysis of this theme, as addressed by Abreu, by focusing on the review of four of his short stories from Morangos Mofados (1982) and Os dragões não conhecem o paraíso (1988). In order to understand how eroticism pervades the selected narratives, the analyses are divided in two parts. In the first one, I analyze two short stories focused on erotic initiation: Sargento Garcia and Uma praiazinha de areia bem clara, ali, na beira da sanga. In the second part, I present the ways by which eroticism and death are intertwined in two other Abreus short stories: Os sapatinhos vermelhos and Terça-feira gorda. These last ones reveal the idea that death establishes the subject and pleasure finitude. I argue that, in these short stories, eroticism appears more as a promise of fulfillment than a total fruition. Even when accomplished, pleasure is restricted by elements that are external to the subjects, such as societys prejudice, or by the intrinsic condition of individuals and of the self: incompleteness

▼ Portuguese Poet Florbela Espanca (1984 1930) lived and produced her literary work during a period in which, on the one hand, the ideals of an innovative and irreverent movement were being fomented led by Fernando Pessoa, Almada Negreiros and Mário de Sá-Carneiro , on the other hand, Portugal was still dominated by a conservative and authoritarian thought, anchored in a bourgeois-christian ideology. Inserted in an unfavorable social context to the expression of the female sexual impulse, poet Florbela then appears with an innovative speech as threatening the sexual organization of the Portuguese society. This way, considering the relations between the poetic text and the historical-social context, the aim of this work is to present a reading upon the
Eroticism in The Flowering Heath (2005) as a way to contravene the borders given to the sexual phenomenon. For this reason, we will mainly resort to the concepts developed on the approach of Georges Bataille The
Eroticism (2004) and also by Octavio Paz The Double Flame: Love and
Eroticism (2001)

▼ This dissertation establishes a viewpoint in the Social Cience Field of the Nymphs image in the romanesque construction of the twentieth century based in modern archaeology. Our literary corpus is constitututed by the book of the russian author callled Wladimir Nabokov entlited Lolita and the book Presença de Anita, from a brazilian author called Mario Donato. Both works had a singular repercussion involving an erotic conception wich was faced as pornographic and baffling. We appeal to Georges Bataille‟s and Foucault‟s discussion in order to observe it through an erotic viewpoint from an inner experience not submitted to normalizations. Such experiences provoke a feeling of something unknown and it reflects wild singularities proposed by Foucault and related with many misunderstanding things presented in institutions and cultures. Furthemore Bataille‟s conception about erotism will give us conditions to analyze nymphs‟ bodies in order to see themselves from their main characteristics, such as seduction and tempting and maligning forces. We still aim to focus the paradigm of mankind and nature in the direction presented by Edgar Morin. He analyzes some feelings that nymphs provoke and their relation between men and death. In adittion, we present in this issue some questions between culture and biology, focusing on the initial period of larva (wich means the beggining), bringing up what is ready to be born, a mythical and significant body shown in the media. Lolita in the cinema and A Presença de Anita in the TV was disturbing in society and it projected the possibility of a syntaxes of desire. It can has a symbolic purpose or it can be a kind of social and cultural phenomenon, wich is an object of representation. Our purpose is to immersion/emerge in the Nimphs‟s body with adventure and its risks at the same time in wich we are crossing frontiers

Excursus about the author and his work; the second one introduces the concept of Allegory exemplifying it with representative images of Romance; the third one presents tragic elements in dialog with the Bataille
Eroticism in an Allegory of Feeling; the fourth one shows Stylistic Features used as a display mean of Comedy in Romance going towards the musicalness, being the features used to provoke laugh; the fifth and last one discusses about the study pertinence.

▼ This thesis aims to analyze the construction of the eroticism in the movie Crime Delicado(by Beto Brant, 2005).George Bataille ideas have contributed a lot with this research while he understands eroticism as being the rupture of interdicts and the search for continuity. Among all the ways the eroticism has being dealt in the movies, Crime Delicado peculiarity is to show both, the construction and the deconstruction of the eroticism based on the fusion and dissolution of the bodies. Starting from the analysis of Crime Delicado scenes, the problem of research aims to investigate how the construction of eroticism happens in the movie. The hypothesis here conceived is that some elements added to the narrative, lightening, framing and the intermediation with arts can construct an erotic or antierotic scene. From arts, specially, it will be addressed how the pictorial dialogues with the movie and helps to create the eroticism. The research methodology will comprehend the film analysis and the comparison of the movie with other movies, indicating the relationship between eroticism and painting. Therefore, the bibliography is based mainly in Bataille, Keesey &Duncan, Aumont and Dubois.
A presente dissertação objetiva examinar a construção do erotismo no filme Crime Delicado (Beto Brant, 2005).

The present work aims to investigate the possible implications between the woman and anguish. Our main focus is to research the ways that the woman experiences anguish and how such an affective state bursts out in the psychic feminine life. In order to conduct the research, a psychoanalytical bibliography about the topic was revisited, especially in Freuds work and Lacans studies. The research was based upon Freuds indication that castration anguish, shown as structuring in a mans psychic life, does not present itself as the basis of anguish in the other sex. The correlate to the anguish of castration, for a woman, is the fear of the loss of love, which leads to the investigation of an archaic period in a womans history: her pre-oedipal relation with the mother. This first love bond, which the woman will re-edit several times in each new love encounter, will serve as a basis throughout all her erotic life. In order to illustrate such an issue, Marguerite Durass novel,The Lover, and Camille Claudels works have been chosen to show the intrinsic devastating relation among the woman, anguish, love and the mother.

This qualitative doctoral research in education, conducted with ethnographic inspiration, examines a particular place in the city of Porto Alegre, recognised as a place of homosexual sociabilities and practices, but that also excepts any adult audience (heterosexual men, transvestites, women). Even if it came to be recognized as a gay place, paradoxically it is possible to notice some hierarchies based upon heterosexual practices and behaviors. Inspired by the work of Marquis de Sade, The 120 days of Sodom, or the School of Licentiouness, I see this particular research field as he metaphor of the Silling castle, which suffered numerous adaptations to accommodate several performances and erotic practices. The ' Castle ' that was researched also enabled the analysis of a specific bodily practice, the male strip tease. The analysis problematized the various investments in the body young masculine men who, daily entertain an audience that is predominantly homosexual. In these shows pedagogical elements related to gender and sexuality were perceived. These elements presented on stage were mosty based on a possible supremacy of heterosexuality, which at the same time that devalues the homosexuality of the customers, the feminine and transvestite conditions. Therefore, though being mostly dedicated to gay customers the shows presented in this “castle” also have heteronormative referentials like the rejection of feminine traits and homosexuality.

▼ There are many ways in which gender diversity and sexualness are experienced, spoken of and transacted in India. Recent activism against marginalisation related to sexual and gender nonconformity has led to transformation of some of these idioms into objects that circulate in particular registers of governmentality. In the process, something quite else is created, and this something else portends to speak the truth of 'sexuality in India'. Based on fieldwork carried out between 2005 and 2007 in cities, towns and villages around India, this thesis tells a story of this emergence of 'sexuality' as an aspect of personhood, a political object, a basis for social mobility, a mode of connectedness between people and as a legitimate cause for a movement. The term 'Queer', used variously in India, is a shorthand in some contexts for people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and with South Asian identities such as Hijra, Kothi and Aravani. In others, it refers to a political project challenging norms of heterosexual monogamy, marking a conscious move away from identity-based politics premised on a bio-medical presumption that desire defines personhood. Evoking both these meanings, I examine queer activism as the negotiation of terms of entry of Queer bodies into epidemiological and juridical registers. In relation to the first, I examine interventions of the transnational HIV/AIDS industry that target 'men who have sex with men' – or 'MSM' – the category through which the industry apprehends sexualness between male subjects. I focus on the political-economic conditions of epidemiological knowledge, and on the transformation of idioms of gender and sexualness that its production draws upon. The industry, I argue, is involved in establishing availability of socio-economically marginalised bodies for intervention and research. These relationships of availability are possible because of their promise of social mobility and respectability for queer folk, hitherto despised in masculinist political economies. This mobility is contingent upon the creation and adoption of epidemiologically overdetermined identities which ironically find political significance in being seen as timeless and 'traditional'. The dichotomous being of the 'MSM' - simultaneously the producer and the object of this epidemiological knowledge, implies that the production of this knowledge is predicated upon the ability of queer folk to perform their place in the 'community'. The relationships in the 'field' are already written into the data, and thus the knowledge. Epidemiological knowledge, and the subjects it speaks of, I thus argue, are best understood as articulations of the conditions of their production. The second theme, of Law and the juridical register, opens with an examination of the tensions involved in the production of 'homophobia' as a political object. The disavowal of erotic dimensions in the naming of experiences as 'homophobic violence' is situated in the context of a popular imagination of a worthy juridical subject, and in…

▼ The coming-of-age novel or story exhibits a search for the individual’s meaningful existence within society in conjunction with the attainment of one’s true self. In the years following the Spanish Civil War, Carmen Laforet, Ana María Matute, Mercè Rodoreda, Esther Tusquets and others, published novels of female development that enriched the canon of the Spanish literature. The recent decades have witnessed the publication of a growing number of female formation novels by Lucía Etxebarría, Almudena Grandes, Rosa Montero, as well as many other leading female writers in Spain. This dissertation examines the silenced voice in women’s narrative fiction characterized by modules of the Bildungsroman and aided through cinematic representations. It provides an investigation of patterns in women’s narrative trajectory revolving around configurations of the novel of self-formation and theoretical perspectives on love and eroticism as seen in the novels Nada, El mismo mar de todos los veranos, Julia, Las edades de Lulú, Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes, Primera memoria and the film Elegy. Additionally, I question the interchangeability and reversibility of masculine and feminine traits as demonstrated in the novel Te trataré como a una reina and the films Carmen and Lucía y el sexo, proposing that these notions manifest a discord that subverts the hierarchy of hegemonic discourses. I also focus on exploring connections between women’s marginal standing and the overall sense of displacement and uneasiness that trickled into the Spanish Transition period as seen in the novels Cielo nocturno, La plaza del diamante and the film Las trece rosas. Ultimately, the texts and films I have chosen formulate evocations of this relationship in order to explore factual/fiction dividends of the novel of self-discovery. All works have a common divergent interest in the interplay between the attainment of the self that is aided through political or social conflict, while the others deal tangentially with relationships involving gender based perspectives in conjunction with desire and intimacy.

▼ This collection of short stories and the accompanying critical exegesis interrogates whether eroticism, as defined by Georges Bataille, is possible in contemporary erotic writing. The project employs a Lacanian lens through which to examine the notions of transgression, selfhood, transcendence and language as aspects of Bataillean eroticism. It argues that works in the erotica genre such as 'Fifty Shades of Grey' rely on nostalgia for the transgression of prohibitions that no longer hold moral authority. This project argues, theoretically and creatively, that we must discover and define what constitutes contemporary taboos and prohibitions in mainstream society if we are to formulate new erotic works that explore their transgression.

▼ How do Victorian novels, those detailed imaginative records of psychic interiority and social life, put into language the aspect of our interior lives that seems most stubbornly nonlinguistic: that is, the insistent claims and impulses of erotic desire? If Victorian culture valued reason and accountability over sheer erotic fulfillment, and at the same time represented love and desire as important social experiences, then how did the Victorian novel represent the process of reasoning about desire without diluting its intensity or making it mechanical? In "Bad Logic," I argue that a surprising array of novelists, including Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Anthony Trollope, George Eliot, George Meredith, and Henry James, registered the troublesome opacity of erotic life by experimenting with forms of "bad logic," from hasty conclusions to contradictions to tautologies, and finally to the ethical and erotic possibilities of vagueness. These forms bring into view the limitations of logic as a rubric for moral accountability, while at the same time they work as ironic and tacit ways of speaking and thinking about erotic desire. In other words, in the Victorian novel, the singular, embodied feelings of erotic life are imagined not as ineffable, nonsocial, or fully beyond the explanatory powers of logic and the rational mind. Rather, erotic desires represent a profound depth of psychic and affective life that, even in its resistance to sound propositional language, wants to be understood. The resurgence of interest in theories of logic in nineteenth-century England was in fact intimately related to the philosophical problem of the deep, idiosyncratic self that seems to exceed scientific knowledge about thought and its structures, but which nonetheless guides so much of psychic, ethical, and erotic life. Philosophers and social critics as diverse as Thomas Carlyle, John Stuart Mill, George Boole, and George Eliot took up the stubborn problem of logic and its complex relationship to character. But it was the realist novel, I argue, that allowed for the fullest development of this problem through its own strategies for developing fictional character and representing the fullness of psychic and affective life and its often difficult social expression. That the Victorians talked and wrote endlessly about sex and sexuality, in a variety of medical, scientific, sociological, and psychological vocabularies, has been taken for granted since Foucault provided us with our most enduring account of the Victorian "logic of sex." With "Bad Logic," I enter into an ongoing reappraisal of Foucault's influence on the study of sexuality by suggesting that the Victorian impulse toward talking about and representing sexuality and desire may have had a more complex rationale than a utilitarian desire to manage and regulate sexual behaviors. Foucault's late work turned to sexual practice or ethos as a potentially utopian alternative to the "discourse" of sexuality, and yet I argue that novelistic representations of eroticism in language can extend…

▼ A fifty page manuscript of poetry and a critical introduction detailing the poet's aesthetics. Using the idea of the double-image and
eroticism, the poet places her work in the category of the surreal. She describes the process of writing poetry born of fragmentary elements as a feminist emergence of agency. The manuscript is composed of four sections, each an element in the inevitable breakdown of a love relationship: meeting, love-making, birth of a child, death. Quotes from various authors of anthropological and fictional texts begin each section to reinforce thematic structure in a process of unveiling the agency of the narrator. The poems are organized as a series, beginning and ending with sequence poems.

▼ In the opening of Eroticism, Geroges Bataille’s seminal text on the relationship between death and sensuality, he chose a quote from the Marques De Sade: ‘There is no better way to know death than to tie it to some licentious image’. It is my contention in this thesis that few filmmakers understand such a sentiment as profoundly as Mario Bava did, and although he is often regarded as one of the foremost directors of Gothic, I argue that he was one of the great cinematic practitioners of eroticism. Transgression pervades Bava’s Gothic works as a means to a paradoxical state of terror and passion whereby neither one is resolved but rather they meet in a kind of jouissance, intermingling iconic binaries such as pleasure and pain, beauty and the grotesque, and order and disorder. However, although he often does displace sexuality into the domains of the dangerous, grotesque and violent through strong symbolic and metaphorical use of objectification, he also has powerful metaphors of romance. These two themes, the ‘normal’ homogenous pursuit of desire and its dangerous, primal, heterogeneous ‘other’, are often viewed as contrasting binaries, yet when viewed from the position of Georges Bataille’s theory of eroticism the oneiric imagery, themes and narratives of Bava’s Gothic films become intricate examinations of guilt, desire and death. Bava, in the spirit of Bataille, refuses to privilege the transgression over the taboo (and vice versa) instead using each to ‘complete and reinforce’ the other. He also ironically exemplifies this dialectic of horror and beauty by making the beauty fit for Douglas Sirk and the horror fit for the Grand Guignol. This thesis examines Bava’s continual fascination with death and desire by concentrating purely on his 60s Gothic Revivalist works Black Sunday, Black Sabbath (The Wurdalak segment), The Whip and the Body and Kill, Baby Kill!, and his 60s Modern Gothic works The Telephone, The Girl who Knew Too Much and Blood and Black Lace. In order to achieve this the thesis also examines important influences, socio-economic factors and culturally specific trends that not only shaped Bava’s Gothic style but also contributed to the evolution of the Gothic style in the cinema. It seeks to apply Bataillian theory (and occasionally various Bataille-informed psychoanalytic principles) to scrutinise both the reoccurring and exclusive ways Bava has situated death and desire within the framework of the Gothic genre.Throughout the writing of this thesis I also concurrently worked on various feature length screenplays as a means of amalgamating the ideas of Bataille and the cinematic language of Bava into an artistic practicum (in the spirit of how Bataille exorcised his own ideas into creative works such as Story of the Eye). The eventual result (a feature length screenplay) stands as an amalgamation between a written interpretation of Bava’s visual and thematic concerns, Bataille’s fiction, and the incorporation of the theoretical framework I established in the thesis. Although I resist the notion of…

▼ This research outlines the reconfiguration of the creative act of drawing through physical practice as a response to mass culture. This practice takes place in the context of developing digital technologies, culminating in metadrawing. Metadrawing is defined as the integration of the post-digital collapse of media specificity in the visual arts. This research posits metadrawing as a descriptor for the paradigm shift between the physical act of drawing in pre-digital mass culture and the principles of drawing incorporated into digital technologies.
Through this shift, drawing has become an artistic act that is no longer working to collapse media divisions, and now operates within and without these divisions, destabilised by digital technologies. This research examines drawing as a history of innovations and responses to shifts in technologies and their applications. Questions of genre, form and medium are subsequently downplayed for an interdisciplinary approach. High and low are no longer distinct, as the internet search engine is adopted into the artist's toolbox, alongside the digital camera and animation software. The many accessible and disposable images are integrated as raw matter, to fossick and sift through.
Accompanying studio research operates within the interdisciplinary freedoms of the metadrawing. Approaches to quotation, appropriation, pastiche, irony, detachment and sincerity are explored through a rigorous drawing practice, resulting in a vast, multilayered body of work. This self-reflexive and intuitive practice incorporates numerous ciphers into its many suspended, but interrelated narratives. Beyond the physical level, the work operates on an intertextual level, moving between the metaphysics of genre and previously separated art forms to create a reconfigured history, unhampered by previous distinctions and boundaries of media and form. This research posits the act of drawing as a reaction to, or divergence from, the dominant techno-capitalist status quo, treating the tactile experiences of studio practice as subversive, transgressive, and erotic. This research explores the subjectivity and the subjective agency of the artist. Drawing is therefore defined as a process of unrepeatability, a process that, while no longer necessary for picture making, still forms a crucial and engaging tier of the visual arts. Drawing’s divergence from the commercialised intangibility of the digital has revitalized its practitioners, demanding a reconsideration of what is means to draw today. This tension is explored through the different methods of studio practice, on the level of the personal-biological, the erotic, and in terms of collision and materiality. Specific images are selected through criteria directly linked with the subjective agency of the artist, and reconfigured through artistic practice, creating a new imbrication of the raw image matter.
