▼ Waste disposal has always been one of the challenging aspects of human life mostly in populated areas. In every urban region, various factors can impact both amount and composition of the generated waste, and these factors might depend on a series of parameters. Therefore, developing a predictive model for waste generation has always been challenging. We believe that one main problem that city planners and policymakers face is a lack of an accurate yet easy-to-use predictive model for the waste production of a given municipality. It would be vital for them, especially during business downturns, to access a reliable predictive model that can be employed in planning resources and allocating budget. However, most developed models are complicated and extensive. The objective of this research is to study the trend of solid waste generation in Philadelphia with respect to business cycle indicators, population growth, current policies and environmental awareness, and to develop a satisfactory predictive model for waste generation. Three predictive models were developed using time series analysis, stationary and nonstationary multiple linear regressions. The nonstationary OLS model was just used for comparison purposes and does not have any modeling value. Among the other two developed predictive models, the multiple linear regression model with stationary variables yielded the most accurate predictions for both total and municipal solid waste generation of Philadelphia. Despite its unsatisfactory statistics (R-square, p-value, and F-value), stationary OLS model could predict Philadelphia’s waste generation with a low level of approximately 9% error. Although time series modeling demonstrated a less successful prediction comparing to the stationary OLS model (25% error for total solid waste, and 10.7% error for municipal waste predictions), it would be a more reliable method based on its model statistics. The common variable used in all three developed models which made our modeling different from the Streets Department’s estimations was unemployment rate. Including an economic factor such as unemployment rate in modeling the waste generation could be helpful especially during economic downturns, in which economic factors can dominate the effects of population growth on waste generation. A prediction of waste generation may not only help waste management sector in landfill and waste-to-energy facilities planning but it also provides the basis for a good estimation of its future environmental impacts. In future, we are hoping to predict related environmental trends such as greenhouse gas emissions using our predictive model.

▼ This dissertation examines whether spatial measures of health determinants and health outcomes are being used appropriately and effectively to improve the health of marginalized populations in the United States. I concentrate on three spatial measures that have received significant policy and regulatory attention in California and nationally: access to healthful foods, climate change, and housing quality. I find that measures of these health determinants have both significant limitations and unrealized potential for addressing health disparities and promoting health equity. I define spatial triage as a process of using spatial data to screen or select place-based communities for targeted investments, policy action, and/or regulatory attention. Chapter 1 describes the historical context of spatial triage and how it relates to ongoing health equity research and policy. In Chapter 2, I evaluate spatial measures of community nutrition environments by comparing data from in-person store surveys against data from a commercial database. I find that stores in neighborhoods with higher population density or higher percentage of people of color have lower availability of healthful foods and that inaccuracies in commercial databases may produce biased measures of healthful food availability. Chapter 3 focuses on spatial measures of climate change vulnerability. I find that currently used spatial measures of "disadvantaged communities" ignore many important factors, such as community assets, region-specific risks, and occupation-based hazards that contribute to place-based vulnerability. I draw from examples of successful actions by community-based environmental justice organizations and reframe "disadvantaged" communities as sites of solutions where innovative programs are being used to simultaneously address climate mitigation, adaptation, and equity goals. In Chapter 4, I combine electronic health records, public housing locations, and census data to evaluate patterns of healthcare utilization and health outcomes for low-income children in San Francisco. I find that children who live in redeveloped public housing are less likely to have more than one acute care hospital visit within a year than children who live in older, traditional public housing. These results demonstrate how integrating patient-level data across hospitals and with data from other sectors can identify new types of place-based health disparities. Chapter 5 details recommendations for analytic, participatory, and cross-sector approaches to guide the development and implementation of more effective health equity research and policy.

▼ The background to this study had its genesis from the fact that little was known about how illiterate and semi-literate adults learnt about environmental sustainability in rural Zambia. In recent years, there has been a great need for education for all (EFA), not only youths or those that attend formal education. Further, in 2000, the United Nations set eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which is an agenda for improving the human condition by 2015. To achieve MDGs, a country will need political, socioeconomic and environmental sustainability.The seventh MDG deals with the environmental sustainability. Among those, target nine aims to reverse loss of environmental natural resources. It was in line with this goal and the great need for education for all that this study was designed to investigate the role of dialogue education in ensuring environmental sustainability among the illiterates in rural Petauke district, Zambia. The study addressed itself to three major questions. These were: (a) How do illiterate and semi-literate adults in "Kakwewa-Lusowe watershed" community and "Showground" compound community in Petauke district learn about environmental sustainability? (b) What are the levels of awareness of environmental sustainability among illiterate and semi-literate adults in "Kakwewa-Lusowe watershed" community and "Showground" compound community in Petauke district; and (c) Is there room for additional environmental sustainability approaches to be proposed in "Kakwewa-Lusowe watershed" community and "Showground" compound community in Petauke district? The study design was a case study. It was supported by triangulation of more qualitative than quantitative data. It, therefore, involved both qualitative and quantitative methods to collect data. The sample comprised 58 respondents. Qualitative method used semi-structured interviews, FGDs and physical field observations. Quantitative methodology relied on the use of questionnaires administered to local leaders and randomly selected residents of the "Showground" compound and "Kakwewa-Lusowe watershed" communities in Petauke. Quantitative data collected was analyzed using simple frequency distribution tables and percentages while qualitative data from interviews and physical field observations was analyzed qualitatively by coding and grouping similar themes using constant comparative techniques. Tables produced using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) were used in the presentation of data after analysis. The main findings of the study were that it is evident that illiterates and semi-literate adults in the study areas learnt about environmental sustainability mainly through informal and non-formal education. This included interactive dialoguing, sharing traditional environmental knowledge, use of the mass media and demonstrations organized by government extension workers and non-governmental organizations like PFC. ▼ Anaerobic digesters (ADs) are an important engineered system used to effectively treat wastewater sludge. The ecology of these digesters is dominated by the acetoclastic methanogens, Methanosaeta spp. and Methanosarcina spp. Though CRISPR sequences have been identified in the genomes of these methanogens, no phages infecting these archaea have been identified. Analysis of the virus size fraction of digester samples by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of numerous virus-like particles (VLPs), consistent with phages within the family Siphoviridae, which contains phages that infect both archaea and bacteria. To further investigate these VLPs, acetate-fed anaerobic reactors were established and samples removed for characterization of the viral size fraction (VSF) by DNA sequencing. Samples from functional ADs were also processed to assess the similarity to the reactor communities. Samples were 0.2 um filtered, concentrated, placed in CsCl density gradient, and DNase treated before DNA extraction. To assess sample purity and diversity, one sample was initially amplified and sequenced. Samples were then sequenced using an Ion Torrent PGM. Sequences were quality trimmed and assembled, and then analyzed using MG-RAST. Taxonomic profiling yielded ~10% of reactor sequences having significant matches, compared to 25-32% of digester sequences, and indicated dominance by the order Caudovirales, consistent with TEM images. Reactor sequence matches to CRISPR spacers of Methanosaeta concilii suggest the presence of viruses of acetoclastic methanogens in these systems. Functional profiling indicated an abundance of DNA methylase genes, consistent with a prior study. Taxonomic and functional comparison indicated moderate differences between the hourly fed reactor and other samples. Functional comparison to viral metagenomes from other environments indicated significantly lower metabolic gene frequency in our samples. ▼ Large predators are returning to ecosystems in the U.S., and their conservation is an ongoing, perhaps symbolically-driven challenge for wildlife agencies. Current research on public tolerance of carnivores is limited by scale, little theoretical direction, and difficult to replicate measures. Addressing the issue of symbolic meaning, we coded qualitative responses to an open ended survey question regarding salient thoughts and images of wolves for concrete and abstract content. We found that most respondents think of wolves abstractly, though residents of the Northern Rocky Mountains were almost evenly split between abstract vs. concrete thoughts about wolves, and individuals strongly identifying as hunters, gun rights advocates, property rights advocates, or farmer/rancher were more likely to think of wolves concretely. Next, we address existing limitations in current research with two studies that bring theories of risk and decision making to bear on policy-relevant behaviors indicating stewardship and intolerance for wildlife. Modeling wolves as a hazard, we consider the impact of affect, knowledge, risk and benefit on tolerance for wolves among an issue public. We found both stewardship and intolerant behaviors to be well predicted by our model among this sample (r2 > .85), and in particular, we found affect for wolves and perceived benefits of recovery to be the most predictive of behavior. In a public sample, a modified hazard model poorly predicts intolerance, but predicted 22% of the variance in stewardship, driven primarily by perceived benefits, which were in turn predicted by trust in the managing agency and positive affect for wolves. Together, these studies indicate some potentially motivated reasoning among the issue public, whose behavioral intentions were largely predicted either directly or indirectly by affect, and emphasize the overall importance of benefits in predicting tolerance. Conflict over carnivore management will require more than simple outreach to the public for resolution. Trusted agencies leveraging perceptions of benefit might increase tolerance for carnivore conservation, but addressing concrete risks among those with more negative affect will still be necessary. This research suggests that where the wild things will be is where there is a holistic approach to stakeholder engagement. ▼ The overarching objective of this research is to investigate the transformation of iron sulfide, mackinawite (FeS), in contaminated environments. A special research focus is to investigate the FeS oxidation products formed during dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE) and carbon tetrachloride (CT). The results from this research will enhance the ability to effectively apply FeS in the in situ remediation of contaminated sites by chlorinated aliphatic contaminants. The transformation of powdered FeS to greigite (Fe3S4) and pyrite (FeS2) under geochemical conditions similar to those in pristine or contaminated aquifers was monitored. To observe the transformation without altering or damaging the crystal structures, FeS particles were immobilized on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) supports, and mineralogical changes were monitored by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Powders of FeS immobilized on PMMA supports were placed in aqueous solutions containing polysulfides and mildly elevated temperatures (75-78 °C) to promote the transformation to greigite and pyrite. SEM/EDS results were consistent with previously reported X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis that showed the transformation of mackinawite to greigite and pyrite. The similarities in sizes between most crystals over the course of the transformation from mackinawite to pyrite, as well as the coexistence of solids with morphologies and elemental compositions characteristic of mackinawite, greigite, and pyrite, are consistent with a solid state transformation. In some cases, however, much smaller pyrite crystals were formed, which may have resulted from direct nucleation from solution. The results reported here extend the applicability of PMMA supports for studying mineralogical transformations to particles with dimensions from 100 nm to 2 µm, and to elevated temperatures. Such supports can be used to monitor iron-sulfur mineralogical changes in pristine and contaminated environments. The FeS oxidation products formed during the reaction between FeS and CT at pH 7 and 8 were studied. XRD analysis suggested the formation of greigite upon reaction of FeS with CT at pH 7. At pH 8, reaction of FeS with CT led to the formation of abundant spherical particles with diameters between 50-400 nm on the FeS surface and in solution; far fewer such particles were observed at pH 7. Analysis of the FeS surface by EDS after reaction with CT at pH 8 showed decreased sulfur and elevated oxygen compared to unreacted FeS. The spherical particles that formed upon FeS reaction with CT were mostly amorphous with localized areas of poorly crystalline two-line ferrihydrite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the predominant Fe surface species after reaction with CT at pH 8 was Fe(III)-O, consistent with ferrihydrite and other amorphous iron (hydr)oxides as major products. ▼ The study focuses on the role of government in the provision of environmental programmes, events and campaigns. South Africa is a signatory to a number of environmental treaties and protocols hence it is expected to celebrate environmental days annually, such as World Wetland Day, National Water Week, World Environmental Week, Arbor Day and many more. The study considered the community of Masibekela, a remote rural village in Mpumalanga Province under the Nkomazi Local Municipality as its study area. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to gather the necessary data from the four sets of respondents to a questionnaire survey, namely: the Sector Manager of Tonga Environmental Centre, traditional leadership and community members, learners and educators. The study discovered that the provision of environmental programmes, events and campaigns to the study area by the government leaves much to be desired. It lays bare that the community members of Masibekela are neglected environmentally by the government as compared to schools. The study also revealed contrasting features both in the knowledge and celebration of some of the environmental days by both the schools (learners and educators) and the general community members. A high percentage of learners and educators expressed their knowledge and celebration of environmental days since they are frequently visited by government officials to promote environmental programmes, events and campaigns geared towards environmental education and awareness but the same cannot be said about the traditional leaders and community members. It is recommended, among other things, that the Tonga Environmental Centre, as a custodian of provision of environmental programmes, events and campaigns, should be capacitated both in terms of human resources and strategic planning so as to meet its expectations. It is also recommended vi that more funding for bursaries for environmental studies for the youth should be made available and also more capital should be injected into the actual promotion of environmental programmes, events and campaigns. The National Department of Education in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Affairs should consider including Environmental Education in the school curriculum as a compulsory subject in all grades Advisors/Committee Members: Innes, L (advisor), Fairhurst, U. ▼ Environmental education is vital to Environmental Conservation in order to reduce or stop environmental degradation which in most cases affects women severely. In view of the point that women have the responsibility of taking care of their household resources, degraded environments mean that women must spend more time and effort than ever to manage such household resources which include, among others, collection of firewood, fetching water and producing food. There are many cases which demonstrate that women suffer a lot after the depletion of resources on which they rely. For instance, in India women now spend four to five hours a day collecting firewood where previously they would have done so once every four to five days. Investigating how to address this situation, constituted the research problem of this study as applied to Chongwe area. In this regard, the purpose of this study was firstly to find out how environmental degradation in Zambia affected rural women in general and the Chongwe rural women in particular. Having established this, the second aim of the study was to draw out some environmental education activities from the connection to be so made between environmental degradation and the rural Chongwe women. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative research designs. Questionnaires were administered to some Council workers in Chongwe, high school teachers and a few police officers in the research area. In addition, some short interviews were conducted with sampled Chongwe women. The results were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences from the qualitative data collected. The study's findings confirmed the reviewed literature assertions that there wasenvironmental degradation in Chongwe area and that such degradation mostly affected women. The study also revealed that there were some environmental education activities taking place in the research area at a very low level.Major recommendations of the study included the need to involve Chongwe residents inEnvironmental Education sensitization so that residents are sensitized on issues affecting their environment. It is hoped that such sensitization would help in reducing environmental degradation in Chongwe area. Another major recommendation is the need to involve women in environmental issues as they were the most affected by effects of environmental degradation as revealed by this research. When women are actively involved, they will understand their environment better and, therefore, will be able to preserve it.

▼ Hawaii Island has the highest incidence of rat lungworm disease (RLWD) of all the Hawaiian Islands and the mainland United States. The relatively recent introduction of the semi-slug Parmarion martensi, an effective intermediate host, and the wide-spread use of rainwater catchment systems may play a role. Studies were designed to investigate the ability of drowned gastropods to shed larvae, the location in a water column where larvae would most likely be found, the potential for larval passage through a 20µm filter, and the ability of the larvae to survive outside the slug/snail host. Whole P. martensi shed many, viable A. cantonensis larvae with >90% of larvae found in samples taken from the bottom of the water column, suggesting they may settle near the bottom of a catchment tank. Larvae that were able to pass through a 20µm sieve could not survive acid, were active for at least 56 days outside the slug host, and tested positive for RLW by qPCR. Larvae that could not pass through a 20µm sieve were able to survive HCl-pepsin, were active for at least 21 days, and tested positive for RLW. First stage larvae can survive gut acid when swallowed after migration from the lungs but cannot withstand acid immersion again until they become third stage larvae.The study results merit further investigation into the potential link between poorly maintained rainwater catchment systems and the high incidence of RLWD on Hawaii Island, and the studies clearly demonstrate the need for control of hosts of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Hawaii’s remote location makes food security an important issue. State-wide efforts to promote the Grow Local, Eat Local movement are reflected in the growing number of residential gardens, small farms, farmers’ markets, school and youth garden projects, and the recent passage of the Farm to School Bill. However, efforts to educate farmers, food handlers, and consumers about rat lungworm disease and the need for disease prevention and host control has not been similarly supported. In collaboration with five partner schools on Hawaii Island, the University of Hawaii, Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy’s Hawaii Island Rat Lungworm Working Group worked with students and teachers to develop an integrated pest management plan for school garden projects. Integrated pest management allows for the careful consideration of applications available to control a pest event and chooses those practices that are least harmful to human and environmental health. These best practices include preventative cultural practices, monitoring, mechanical control, biological control, and the responsible use of pesticides. Students were intensively educated about RLWD, the parasite’s life cycle, and prevention measures. Using best management practices, we set up traps and collected data on gastropod species abundance, and shelter-type capture rate. ▼ This study examined how children aged 9 - 14 years, attending two different residential summer camps, responded to questions related to their connection with nature, environmental stewardship, interest in environmental learning and discovery, and knowledge and awareness of environmental and ecological issues (i.e., environmental consciousness). The study also explored the association of early-life experiences in the outdoors with campers' responses related to their environmental consciousness. Both camps were situated in similar, natural outdoor settings, but only one of the camps (designated as Camp A) engaged the children in intentional environmental education programming. The other camp (designated as Camp B) served as a control group, but also provided a setting for studying the effects of participation in a summer camp in a natural outdoor setting without intentional environmental education programming on the campers' environmental consciousness. Samples of children attending Camp A and Camp B were surveyed before and after their camp experience to determine any changes in their environmental responses from pre- to post-camp experience. Early-life outdoor experiences, as reported by the children in the pre-camp questionnaires, were analyzed to determine associations between levels of early-life outdoor experiences and environmental response scores on both the pre- and post-camp surveys. Results showed that Camp A children's overall scores increased significantly from pre- to post-camp experience, although the scores were significantly higher on only two of the four indices measured. The scores of Camp B children showed no significant increases, either in the aggregate or on any of the four indices individually, from pre- to post camp experience. Higher levels of early-life outdoor experience were associated with significantly higher scores on environmental scales at both camps both pre- and post-camp. ▼ This study describes exploratory qualitative research of North Carolina certified environmental educators’ conceptualizations of sustainability within their educational context. In general, environmental educators’ perceptions of sustainability have been under-researched. Based on a naturalistic inquiry model, the study employed an Internet-based questionnaire followed by a series of semi-structured interviews and discussion groups to gain insights into the concepts of sustainability among the educators. Interviews and discussions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and imported into NVivo 9 © for data management. The constant comparative method and content analysis consistent with a naturalistic inquiry methodology were used to analyze the data. A review of the literature provided an overview of the concept of sustainability, and the role of environmental education in providing a pathway leading to sustainability. The literature indicates that critical thinking and systems thinking are important aspects of education addressing sustainability issues. Experiential and transformative education approaches also provide educational pedagogies for consideration. A discussion of the methodology and methods of exploration are presented, followed by a presentation of the findings and discussion of the content of the educators’ comments. This research study indicates that North Carolina certified environmental educators’ conceptions of sustainability are limited. The study indicates that environmental education has a history and a capacity to foster positive environment attitudes, as well as the ability to cultivate environmental knowledge, and yet the connection to action, though considered vital, is less clear. Applications of addressing social and economic issues relative to environmental issues are severely restricted. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need to provide environmental educators the tools and training necessary to provide a more holistic and integrative educational paradigm that includes experiential and transformative learning, systems thinking, and critical thinking in an interdisciplinary approach. Additionally, educators need training and curricula that integrate the economics, environmental and social aspects of sustainability.

▼ The current treatment of water contaminated with organic compounds includes adsorption, air stripping, and advanced oxidation processes. These methods large quantities of water and require excessive energy and time. A novel treatment process of concentrating and then electrochemically oxidizing compound would be a more feasible practice. This research investigated the oxidative destruction of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) and trichloroethene (TCE) at boron-doped diamond film electrodes and the adsorption of PFOS and PFBS on granular activated carbon and ion exchange resins. Experiments measuring oxidation rates of PFOS and PFBS were performed over a range in current densities and temperatures using a rotating disk electrode (RDE) reactor and a parallel plate flow-through reactor. Oxidation of PFOS was rapid and yielded sulfate, fluoride, carbon dioxide and trace levels of trifluoroacetic acid. Oxidation of PFBS was slower than that of PFOS. A comparison of the experimentally measured apparent activation energy with those calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies indicated that the most likely rate-limiting step for PFOS and PFBS oxidation was direct electron transfer. The costs for treating PFOS and PFBS solutions were compared and showed that PFOS is cheaper to degrade than PFBS. Screening studies were performed to find a viable adsorbent or ion exchange resin for concentrating PFOS or PFBS. Granular activated carbon F400 (GAC-F400) and an ion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA-458, were the best methods for adsorbing PFOS. Ionic strength experiments showed that the solubility of the compounds affected the adsorption onto solid phases. Regeneration experiments were carried out to determine the best method of recovering these compounds from the adsorbents; however, the compounds could not be effectively removed from the adsorbents using standard techniques. The electrochemical oxidation of trichloroethene (TCE) at boron-doped diamond film electrodes was studied to determine if this would be a viable degradation method for chlorinated solvents. Flow-through experiments were performed and showed TCE oxidation to be very rapid. Comparing the data from the DFT studies and the experimentally calculated apparent activation energies the mechanism for TCE oxidation was determined to be controlled by both direct electron transfer and oxidation via hydroxyl radicals.

▼ This dissertation describes a sustainable development extension plan (Sudex Plan) to help communities in developing countries achieve Goal 1 of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Goal 1 focuses on reducing poverty and hunger by 50% by the year 2015, but all the MDG are interrelated and one can not be achieved without considering the others, and to attain any is an empty accomplishment without ways to ensure that they can be sustained and continuously improved with the means to pass on the information, knowledge and lessons learned from community to community, generation to generation. The Sudex Plan is a comprehensive participatory synergistic partnership between a community and Sudex to develop and implement a strategic master plan integrating engineering and scientific methods, and business management and socio-economic practices with public affairs and community planning strategies and tactics. The community provides the direction, management and leadership; Sudex provides the nexus of consilience and information, facilitation and coordination. Together through collective learning and innovation extension through continuous improvement and progress toward self sufficient sustainable development is achieved. The various methods are tried and true, drawn from their respective tool kits; it is the integration, wholeness and conditions to which the Plan is to be applied that are unique. While initial stages of the Sudex Plan have been initiated in Ghana, Thailand and Cambodia with enthusiastic support and participation by the communities, the Plan has yet to be fully implemented, but applying proven techniques in an innovative manner should yield positive results and there is no reason to assume the application will prove to be the exception. We learn by the doing; the community’s welfare improves; success within a community leads to passing on the knowledge and lessons learned to the neighboring village, the momentum leads to continuity, which leads to sustainability and through geometric progression the vortex uncurls outwardly, its radius of influence forever expanding as each level of poverty is consumed until its only relevance is as a comparative measure relative to wealth. This is the essence and promise of the Sudex Plan.

▼ Estuaries are valuable habitats (e.g. seagrass meadows, forested wetlands) and are also economically important for various industrial avenues (e.g. shellfish, tourism). They make up only 13% of the nation's landscape, however, a majority of the human population lives (43%) and works (40%) in coastal and estuarine areas (Restore Americas Estuaries Report 2008). These locations are experiencing increases in land modifications and development (i.e. impervious surfaces) to support such populations. Subsequently, severe water quality issues have resulted due to nonpoint source (NPS) pollution, such as stormwater runoff, contributing fecal contamination to the neighboring waters. Specifically, the Newport River Estuary (NPRE) in North Carolina is listed as impaired for fecal coliforms and an estuarine-wide study was conducted to assess this impairment in relation to stormwater. Major findings regarding the NPRE, a high priority shellfish harvesting area, included (1) stormwater runoff being the main contributor of fecal pollution with concentrations ranging from 1.0 x 10² to 5.0 x 10³ fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) per 100 ml, (2) four day antecedent (day of sampling and three days prior) rainfall explained 60% of the fecal coliform pollution, and (3) tidal trends played a large role in FIB concentrations. Further research in a tributary leading to the NPRE showed loading rates to the shellfish harvesting area were approximately 1.0 x 10⁴ to 1.0 x 10⁵ FIB per 100 ml every 10 minutes during rainfall (>2.54 cm) when a dilution effect from the shore of 100 FIB per 100 ml per 100 meters was assumed (calculated from data from this study). Partitioning of the fecal signal by using an alternative FIB, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, illustrated that although a majority of FIB were above acceptable water quality thresholds for shellfish harvesting areas, the fecal contamination was likely to be not of human origin. However, the bacterial pathogen Campylobacter lari was detected in the NPRE, raising public health concerns. Overall, the NPRE is experiencing serious water quality issues from NPS pollution via stormwater runoff, and although the contamination is most likely from environmental sources, it will be important to control this runoff to keep this valuable estuary healthy.

▼ I argue that contemporary struggles with sustainability must be addressed from the perspective of critical cultural analysis that identifies attitudes and behaviors as rooted in specific worldviews, narratives, metaphors, and belief systems, and that challenges and re-envisions these structures of thought in order to reformulate new alternative conceptual frameworks for positive interaction with the more-than-human world. I define this pursuit of critical cultural reflection and creative conceptual transformation as critical ecoliteracy, and I propose the incorporation of its goals and practices into educational curricula in secondary and post-secondary humanities classrooms. I outline a list of conceptual resources that I consider essential for engaging in critical ecoliteracy and for developing an approach to the world that values and considers the full, interconnected community of life in our global ecosystem. These skills and capacities include the practice of empathy; an understanding and appreciation of ecological and relational interdependence; ethical consciousness; an awareness of local and global socio-environmental systems and problems; critical awareness of the role that language and discourse play in shaping attitudes and behaviors; knowledge of the varying worldviews and belief systems of different cultures; a capacity for imagining creative alternative future paths; and a sense of agency to enact change. I encourage the development of critical ecoliteracy curriculum materials that cultivate this set of capacities. I next describe pedagogical strategies I recommend employing when applying critical ecoliteracy materials in school settings, and I offer my own model critical ecoliteracy curriculum as an example of these goals and approaches. In order to assess the potential value of such a curriculum, I test my materials in classrooms by teaching them myself and by asking a volunteer teacher to use them. I then analyze student writing, survey results, and teacher feedback in order to gauge the effect of the curriculum materials on student thinking. Using qualitative content analysis, I explore the patterns of reactions presented by students in response to the materials, and I draw conclusions as to how effective the model curriculum may be at achieving the goals of critical ecoliteracy that I have outlined.
