▼ Despite its legal protection, La Primavera Forest (LPF) conservation is increasingly threatened by several issues exacerbated by economic pressures, lack of environmental enforcement, poor co-ordination among municipal authorities and mixed land tenure (State, private and collective ownership). Payments for Environmental Services (PES) have been proposed as means of conservation and local development, which triggered discussion and site-based research.
International PES discourse, first conceived as market-based mechanism, have clashed with Mexican social realities and an enduring developmental-state legacy, when separation of nature and society resulted problematic in a socially embedded context, such as communally managed and collectively owned Mexican forested lands. Thus, national PES programs have evolved since formal government declaration in 2000, towards a conception of eco-social systems and poverty alleviation, contesting original PES criteria emphasising conservation efficiency.
In LPF, there is an ongoing discussion around PES, with State government calling for public support, and promoting opportunities for conservation and local development. Although it is stereotyped as `city lungs' by inhabitants of Guadalajara (GDL) and its metropolitan area, they are not aware of LPF key provision of Environmental Services (ES), challenging the task of raising awareness. Regarding the situation in the ground, LPF landowners and ejidos have contesting priorities and pressures that confront their conservationist attitudes with economic development.
All this, urges for comprehensive approaches for predicting PES participation that go beyond economic valuations, as different social embeddedness degrees of individuals deviate their behaviour from rational choice. Social acceptability is a key element for environmental policy and practice, as it involves comparisons of known alternatives, influenced by a suite of contextual factors and a behavioural component. Environmental psychology gives hope to building understanding of this as function of processes internal to the individual or cognitive pathways.
The aim of this research is to review environmental psychology theory to be analysed and integrated with existing relevant research for LPF, from a social psychology perspective, argued to be coherent with the socially embedded context and particular national PES discourse. This is done for each group of interest; `GDL dwellers' and `LPF landowners and ejidos, in their differentiated role as 'ES users' and 'ES providers', with different level of social embeddedness. As a result, a conceptual framework for prediction and increase of PES social acceptability is proposed from a social psychology perspective, showed in Figure 5. This is comprised by specific research recommendations for potential investigation of each group of interest. Social acceptability judgements of each, has been found to be specially informed by a certain behavioural theory and influenced by a suite of contextual factors,…

▼ The objective of this study was set to establish the strategies adopted by courier firms to cope with environmental challenges in the industry in Kenya. The courier industry, which is regulated by the Communications Commission of Kenya, was liberalized in 1998, opening doors to stiff competition for the Postal Corporation of Kenya which had been a monopoly. The data and information received in this study presented the similarities and differences in management practices in different courier companies in strategy selection and application of popular strategic management concepts. Establishing the firms’ actions in coping with challenges in the external industry environment, and identifying the challenges in the industry enabled the researcher to relate the findings of the study with the research question on the appropriateness of strategies adopted, since some courier firms have succeeded in coping with the environmental challenges in the industry, while others have not.
The descriptive sample survey research method was used to collect the data. A sample of 50 courier firms within 47 counties in the country was selected, and the data was collected through a self administered questionnaire send to the respondents on email and through the drop and pick method. The data was analyzed, summarized and conclusions drawn based on the firm profiles received and the strategic options presented. It was found out that different category licensees adopted various strategies in an endeavor to cope with various challenges in the industry including increasing competition, unlicensed entrants, high operational costs and regulatory influence. The most popular strategies included using better information systems that make customer service fast and reliable, offering high quality, better terms, value added services, and offering unique services to customers that are not offered by competitors Differentiation was the most popular generic strategy, with diversification being the least favored and applied grand strategy.
The limitations of the study included restricted access to information, unreachable selected courier firms, and unwilling respondents who did not wish to participate in the study. The findings of this study support the fact that strategy is a fundamental ingredient for success and that to survive and thrive in a challenging business environment, every firm needs a strategy. The findings of the study also help to inform policy on management of courier companies in Kenya, and can be used as a source of reference by managers and strategists in courier firms, scholars of strategic management, researchers and stakeholders in the courier services industry in Kenya

▼ The provision of adequate sanitation is an essential service. In terms of schedule 4B of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 108 of 1996 (the Constitution), such provision is a function of local government. It falls within the developmental mandate of local government in that it is a basic service that contributes to the quality of people’s lives. However, the lack of access to adequate sanitation is a problem in South Africa, as roughly 17 million people are still without access to improved sanitation. This lack has a detrimental impact on people’s lives and merits an enquiry into the role of local government in providing such services.
In this study, the legal mandate of local government in relation to sanitation is explored from an environmental justice perspective, as access to sanitation is an environmental issue. Although there is no explicit constitutional right to sanitation, it is argued that such a right is implicitly recognised by means of the provision of other rights in the Constitution, legislation and policy documents. The study further unpacks the mechanisms and instruments available to municipalities to enable them to achieve the objectives of environmental justice when providing sanitation services.
The urban and rural landscape in South Africa have different features, and the people who live in them have different needs. For this reason the features and challenges of urban and rural municipalities are discussed separately, thus establishing the different approaches that urban and rural municipalities might have to follow in the provision of sanitation services.
The study concludes with recommendations and the identification of the various governance tools that municipalities may use in order to realise the right to sanitation whilst achieving the objectives of environmental justice.

▼ Environmental science is a growing field that draws data from a broad range of
disciplines. These data represent the intellectual and financial efforts of countless
individuals and institutions and are invaluable for continued research on the environment.
This thesis details three case studies that center on providing users with improved access
to
environmental data and suggest an information model. Users will be better served by
environmental information systems that provide detail on the strengths and limitations of
data in archives, and that give direct access to individual measurements accompanied by
metadata. Metadata provides the required, essential summary of the applicability of data.
The first case study describes the creation of a prototype metadata system CODIS (the
Continental and Oceanographic Information System). It examines the creation of an
effective database organization for a multidisciplinary information system and the
generation of conventions and techniques to assemble and structure multidisciplinary
data. These conventions included the requirement for input using previously prepared
lists and the development of parallel data structures between disciplines to facilitate data
entry and searching. This improved database organization was demonstrated to decrease
the time needed for data entry while reducing error rates in the entered data.
Data in CODIS are appraised for reliability using discipline-specific protocols. The
protocols are based on a dichotomous, decision tree format accompanied by detailed
guidelines. The output from the appraisal process is a non-hierarchical assessment based
on a five-point scale and comments from appraisers. These products inform users about
the reliability of the included data. The protocols were examined for repeatability and
replication between appraisals. The outputs from the appraisal processes were
demonstrated to be comparable to peer review.
Contextual evaluation, developed in the second case study, provides insight into the
potential applicability of data in databases. The NCIS (National Contaminants
Information System) study examines the development of a system to create contextual
metadata to be stored with archival data. Contextual evaluation is carried out by
examining and documenting each step in the experimental process. This study entailed
developing a set of protocols for the assessment, and creating educational tools to ensure
their effective implementation. NCIS groups datasets as either experiments or surveys,
with only experiments being evaluated for context. It was necessary to develop a unified
organizational scheme to classify diverse research and monitoring activities into defined
categories. The process was reviewed and a refined version is currently in use across
Canada in the implementation of NCIS. The case study highlighted difficulties
associated with the division into experiments and surveys.
The third case study examines the censoring of data, a practice that involves reporting
values as unknown…

▼ Mexican mangroves are being deforested at an average rate of 1.15% per year, yet these essential ecosystems provide surrounding communities with increased fishery yields, protection from hurricanes, and run off filtration. Additionally, mangroves are well known for their ability to sequester and store carbon and have gained international recognition for this ecosystem service. The purpose of this study is to estimate current carbon stocks and sequestration rates and quantify their economic value at a local level throughout Mexico. We analyzed data from literature and calculated municipio-specific estimates of carbon. We found average carbon stocks of 519.3 MgC ha-1, with sequestration rates between 0.63 to 3.46 MgC ha-1 yr-1. Using the social cost of carbon, we estimated that the total carbon stocks in Mexican mangroves is worth 62 trillion US dollars. If baseline deforestation continues from 2016 to 2040, Mexico will lose more than 3 trillion dollars. Currently, each hectare of mangroves deforested costs an average of 42 thousand dollars between oxidation of carbon stocks and lost sequestration. In most places, the damages from deforestation outweigh the opportunity costs of cattle ranching and agriculture, which are common alternative land uses. In addition, the cost of investing in mangroves to meet Mexico’s climate goals is less than the damages resulting from deforestation per area, although targeted management is necessary. The calculated value of carbon and cost of deforestation versus the price of investment in each municipio should be used to inform mangrove conservation policy in Mexico.

▼ AbstractHuman ingenuity and activities have
resulted in erosion of ecosystems and their capacity to support the
sustainable production of goods and functions that we depend on.
Biodiversity i.e. the diversity within and between species and of
ecosystems, underpins many of the ecosystem functions critical for
human well-being and resilience, and is declining faster than at
any time in human history. Thus, the ongoing loss of biodiversity
and its associated ecosystem functions is one of the most critical
challenges we face today. The intensification of agriculture during
the last century, including both in-field intensification and loss
and fragmentation of habitats, has played a major role in the
degradation of biodiversity and ecosystem services world-wide. The
intensification of agriculture has resulted in increased production
of private goods such as crops but at the expense of public goods
like for example regulation of water and climate. In addition, the
intensification of agriculture also erodes regulating ecosystem
services such as pollination, which ultimately threatens the
provision of sustainable crop production. In this thesis I have
investigated how to integrate management of ecosystem services in
arable farming, to promote multifunctional landscapes that are able
to support sustainably both private and public goods. In a
conceptual study, framing the thesis, I suggest that the whole
‘ecosystem service cascade’ needs to be taken into consideration
when formulating agri-environmental policies and that by exploiting
synergies between private and public goods, it is possible to let
public goods hitchhike on private goods. I have investigated the
possibilities of and constraints on integrating ecosystem services
under current EU agri-environmental policies, how these policies
affect farmer behaviour and the consequences of alternative policy
formulations for ecosystem services such as pollination and natural
pest control. I contribute to the currently weak evidence base on
the ecological effect of agri-environmental measures, using the CAP
ecological focus areas as a case study. Annual ecological focus
areas sown with flower strips had weak effects on natural enemies
but positively affected bumblebees up to several 100 m from the
strips. Together the two studies showed the potential for networks
of annual flower strips to provide complementary resources in
intensively managed agricultural landscapes, where late-season
resources are often scarce. By investigating the role of farmer
attitudes and farm characteristics for decisions to take up a
voluntary agri-environmental measure, we showed that uptake of
buffer strips is connected to both attitudes and farm size. The
results highlight the importance of ensuring positive attitudes
among farmers as well as the need to facilitate environmentally
friendly management. Using ecological-economic modelling we
demonstrated that by restricting ecological focus areas to such
with a high quality with optimal placement, they could have
positive effects on functional…

▼ During this research project, an attempt was made to understand the role of ecotherapy as a therapeutic model in post conflict healing. The aim was to evaluate the application and significance of ecotherapy as an intervention strategy for post conflict healing for individuals who were exposed to violent encounters during the liberation struggle. Eight respondents (involved in the arms struggle) from Mdanstane Township in the Eastern Cape, were taken through a series of workshops as part of an ecotherapy healing process. The research concluded that all the participants had suffered from some form of traumatic stress because of their exposure to violence and violent experiences. Moreover, on closer examination the situation of ex-combatants proved to be more complex and often volatile, due to the absence of social support, loss of social status, absence of economic, employment opportunities, and the dislocation from their families and communities. Subsequent to the ecotherapy intervention, a positive outlook amongst the participants was recorded. Furthermore, there was an indication of a significant increase in their sense of self-worth and personal development, which influenced the manner in which the participants viewed the world, related to their families or communities and responded to life in general. Essentially, the research findings, conclusions, and recommendations contributed towards a better understanding of ex-combatants and the value that could be derived from ecotherapy as a post conflict healing method for individuals and groups exposed to violence and trauma.

▼ Fifteen years ago, the 2005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a global assessment of the world’s ecosystems, found that 60% of global Ecosystem Services (ES) examined were being degraded or used unsustainably. Net economic and human well-being gains in the last half century have placed significant pressure on the earth’s natural resources, caused irreversible biodiversity loss, and reduced vital ecosystem functions, services, values and benefits (MA, 2005). This is particularly concerning in an era of climate change as ecosystem services offer natural climate resilience. Sustainable development has been instrumental in driving responses to improve ecosystems at all scales, including inter alia, the SDGs and Paris Agreement (internationally), resource management and conservation strategies (regionally), and sustainability planning (locally). The focus of this thesis is the local scale, using select Canadian cities and Ontario watersheds, to assess the applications, gaps and opportunities for integrating the ecosystem services approach to strengthen urban sustainability and climate change planning.
The research presented here shows that despite progress in planning for sustainable development, ecosystem services are neither a planning priority nor fully accounted for in land use decisions. Therefore, ecosystem services are either completely left out of urban sustainability planning decisions or appear in an ad hoc fashion. A review of Canadian city sustainability plans, survey to planners and interviews with watershed managers support this finding. If vital constituents of human well-being are directly linked to the integrity of ecosystem provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services, why are ecosystem services not fully integrated into decisions? This thesis discovers answers to this question by investigating the literature and conducting evidence-based research. The thesis also provides advice for action. In cities, a shift in environmental-ecological thinking and doing has to occur, starting with a formal recognition of the Ecosystem Services Approach (ESA) in city planning. By doing so, cities can build ES capacity and talent to commit to full cost accounting of ES. Cities must bridge the science-policy gap using a multiscale and interdisciplinary approach to allow for ES in decisions. Similarly, in Ontario watersheds, Conservation Authorities (CAs) must integrate consistent and long-term ES monitoring across all watersheds and raise their profiles. Regional authorities must make ES explicit in policies and plans. This will drive the environmental-ecological shift that must occur.
This thesis contributes to the literature by uncovering from a planning perspective, current perspectives and applications of the ecosystem services approach within Canadian cities and Ontario watersheds. Evidence shows that cities such as Vancouver, Toronto and Edmonton have made some progress to advance the science and integration of ES in city planning. It also shows that CAs, while generally conscious of the value…

Each European Union state member performs analysis on certain projects possible impacts
on the environment through the instrument of Environmental Impact Assessment. This
procedure has been implemented on each member state level, being altered and improved e
several occasions, finding itself under constant evolution.
The content of that assessment verified in the correspondent documents of the EIA,
specifically in the Environmental Impact Statement, appear to be somewhat subjective, being
that the description of the affected environmental resources by the project implementation
under that procedure is presented with a certain level of abstraction. This work looks forward
to present ways to enhance the objectivity and consequently the clearness of those
Environmental Impact Assessments, focusing mainly on demonstrate the valuation the
environmental resources affected by the Environmental Impact Assessment project, allowing
a better comprehension by the stakeholders about the real value of the pre-existent
resources in the area of the project.
The great problematic directly linked to the resources valuation is centred in the easy
monetary value attribution whenever a resources has a market price counter pointing the
remaining non-marketed resources. Such approach involves the adoption of a classification
system of ecosystem goods and services, particularly in this case the Common International
Classification of Ecosystem Services that comprises the environmental resources considered
in the Environmental Impact Assessments Finally the application of the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services
approach integrated in the Environmental Impact Assessment is demonstrated and the
valuation of the environmental resources is performed through the benefit transfer method
serving as example for the potentiality of this procedure

▼ Ecosystem services (ES) are highly important for the municipalities to work with since their function as decision-making authority decides about the exploitation of the commune. The degrading of biodiversity is at its highest speed and the ecosystems and the services they provide is at stake. The EU and the Swedish government have therefore decided on goals for ES which affect the municipalities. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Swedish municipalities are working with ES, focusing on the environmental planning, and whether there is a difference between larger and smaller municipalities. A survey was sent to all municipalities in Sweden and 135 of them participated. Comparison was done between three groups depending on population size. The results show that despite all the goals, guidelines and methods that exist, something is missing. Only half of them uses the guidelines and methods, and more than half of them says that knowledge partially is missing among them. There is a difference in this integration and knowledge when comparing large municipalities to smaller ones, which can be explained by lack of expertise, budget and time, but also lack of exploration in smaller municipalities. To achieve the goals and improve the work with ES, simple, user- friendly guidelines and methods is requested but also a widespread knowledge in the whole management. One big reason why not all municipalities are working with this is lack of legislation.

▼ I assessed the economic value of tropical mountain forests’ hydrologic services in two localities of Costa Rica, Turrialba and Guácimo, using the Contingent Valuation Method. The survey elicited the willingness–to–pay (WTP) of various water
consumers to fund a local Payment for Environmental Services Program (PES), for hydrologic protection, through a water conservation fee. Results indicate that the mean WTP is US11.69 to the logit model, and US7.54 to the linear model. Value estimates
about the benefits of hydrologic services conservation provides information to design policy instruments and programs to halt the rapid loss of environmental services. A cost–benefit approach determined that the adoption of a local PES program to finance
the conservation of hydrologic services is feasible; however, it may not necessarily result in Pareto improvement. For rural communities in the tropical mountains, hydrologic services require urgent protection. Therefore, it is necessary to find
alternative mechanisms to finance conservation and promote equity.

▼ Abstract: The Payment for
Environmental Services (PES) is a policy implemented from the revision of the Brazilian Forest Code (2012 Federal Law no. 12,651), whose main objective is to stimulate the maintenance of vegetation and/or recovery of areas of permanent protection in rural areas. In the State of São Paulo the "Produtor de Água" and "Programa Nascentes" programs are projects aligned with this policy and which aim at water protection in the country. Such programs are conceived in a format of partnership between different actors of society in the spheres of federal, state and municipal public management, non-governmental entities, rural producers, and private initiative. It is understood that, for their successful development and guaranteed continuity, those programs should occur parallel to a continuous process of Education for the Earth System, which establishes the knowledge/acknowledgment of natural processes as a premise for the involvement of the rural producers in the recovery and/or preservation of the areas. From this scenario, the development of a methodological tool is intended: one that allows the creation of socio-economic-
environmental indicators, for the stages of implementation and supervision of the programs, which aid in the evaluation and production of elements for their post-implementation sustainability and replicability in other locations. The research adopted the qualitative framework, from case study, and used tools and instruments like semi-structured interviews with the involved actors, in the federal, state and municipal spheres; and workshops with these actors, through participatory education. The municipalities focused on were Salesópolis and Jundiaí, in the context of the São Paulo state macrometropolis. The municipalities present distinct scenarios in relation to progress of the programs and political and social aspects. With results, it was possible to observe that some differentiating factors between the municipalities are strongly related to the programs process of implementation. In Jundiaí there is a bigger adherence and involvement with the program from landowners, as well as a better comprehension of the process; the producers understand the importance of reforestation and what motivated them to participate, having complete awareness that they are important actors in this process. It is important to emphasize that the landowners convinced themselves to participate in the program regardless of financial benefit (PES) and they have a strong partner in the City Hall, with effective technicians and with training in agronomy, forestry engineering. In Salesópolis, the same scenario does not apply, as many owners tended to accept participating in the program just because there was a benefit. It was not observed, in this group, a notion of the "cost" of the investment made in planting and maintenance carried out on the properties, nor a close relationship with the local government, a factor that will contribute to guarantee the sustainability of the program in the long term. It…

▼ Payments for Environmental Services (PES) emerged as a popular forest conservation policy across the Global South since the 1990s, first in Latin America and then elsewhere. PES aim to reduce deforestation and degradation by providing payments to participants conditional on forest protection. PES attracted much attention among policy-makers as a potentially cost-effective and efficient conservation alternative, and for their poverty-alleviation prospects when operating among 'poor' forest-dwellers. This rising agenda has been accompanied by significant scholarly efforts to understand PES and their socioenvironmental effects. However, such understandings have overlooked local stakeholder perspectives, and evaluations have mostly examined short-term effects. Thus, less is known about PES' long-term effects, their determinants, and how local stakeholders perceive them. Using a multidisciplinary, multi-level, and dynamic livelihood approach combining geospatial and socioeconomic data collected from 2013-2017, this thesis helps to fill this gap by examining PES' role in the broader livelihood strategies of six communities in the Mexican Lacandona Rainforest. The thesis makes three main contributions to PES literature. Methodologically, it presents a novel lens to understand PES effects, one that brings to the fore the voice of local stakeholders, while paying attention to evolving context and design aspects. Empirically, it shows that participants think about their livelihoods at broader temporal and spatial scales than short-term policies, which allows them to exert some control on the various policies they encounter. This longer-term thinking is reflected in the three analytical chapters in this thesis that examine how people engage with PES among other land uses, how communities devise payment distribution mechanisms, and how people combine multiple policies to pursue various goals. Conceptually, it shows that unless aspects of 'context', 'design', and 'decision-making' are examined simultaneously, PES' manifold, multi-level, and evolving effects will not be sufficiently understood. Overall, the thesis shows that there are real implications for conceptualising rural development policy as an integrated 'policy matrix', instead of individual and self-contained policies.

This thesis describes the process of structuring of environmental policies in the Amazon, to the context of design management of Proambiente, inserted in the issue of payment for environmental services. It is also demonstrated how the model of occupation of the Amazon, led by the Brazilian State, making it difficult to structure a process of growth and balanced development. Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe the factors that contribute to the lack of effectiveness in implementing environmental public policies for the Amazon and how these issues…

▼ In recent years, issues associated with natural rubber production have gained visibility and a number of industry stakeholders across a range of rubber submarkets have started to adopt forms of eco-certification and labeling in response to a growing market for certified rubber products. While encouraging, the disparate nature of rubber certification efforts across an already highly fragmented industry makes it difficult to determine the alignment between claims to address environmental and social concerns and actual performance. This thesis contrasts the environmental and social impacts of natural rubber production with the range of emerging natural rubber certification efforts to assess the alignment between certification needs and certification outcomes. In addition, this thesis seeks to understand the processes that give rise to particular forms of eco-certification that may or may not serve to address actual issues associated with current production practices. By examining the nature and contexts of the relationships between certification stakeholders along the rubber commodity chain, this paper illuminates the ecological and social processes that have given rise to the demand, supply and adoption of natural rubber eco-certification as a particular form of private environmental regulation.

▼ An abstract of a dissertation: As humans increasingly alter the surface geomorphology of the Earth, a multitude of artificial aquatic systems have appeared, both deliberately and accidentally. Human modifications to the hydroscape range from alteration of existing waterbodies to construction of new ones. The extent and ecosystem
services of these systems are underexplored, but likely substantial and changing. Instead of simply accepting that artificial ecosystems have intrinsically low values,
environmental scientists should determine what combination of factors, including setting, planning and construction, subsequent management and policy, and time, impact the condition of these systems. Scientists, social scientists, and policymakers should more thoroughly evaluate whether current study and management of artificial aquatic systems is based on the actual ecological condition of these systems, or judged differently, due to artificiality, and consider resultant possible changes in goals for these systems. The emerging recognition and study of artificial aquatic systems presents an exciting and important opportunity for science and society. Irrigation ditches are ubiquitous features of water networks in rural and urban settings in drylands, and are thus potentially important habitats within the modern hydroscape. The habitat value of ditches and other artificial systems depends on whether these systems respond to local and watershed-scale land use in similar ways to natural features, or whether artificial origin inherently constrains a system's ecological condition. The ditches and creeks of Bishop, California are fed by water from the same minimally developed watershed on the Eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and so served to test whether artificial and natural waters in the same watershed setting and with shared water can provide similar habitat. We sampled benthic macroinvertebrates at 52 sites within the town, stratified by substrate and season. Communities varied by substrate and season as expected, but did not differ significantly between artificial and natural streams. Instead, both types of streams changed as water flowed from undeveloped desert through town, suggesting that irrigation ditches respond to local urbanization in much the same way that natural streams do. Differences in finer-scale spatial structure of community similarity suggest that community assembly processes may differ between natural and artificial channels, but potential mechanisms for these differences are unclear. This study demonstrates that artificial aquatic systems may have substantial ecological value, and suggests that the poor condition of many artificial aquatic systems may reflect stressful watershed settings rather than something intrinsic to their artificiality. The drainage ditches of the North Carolina Coastal Plain do not merely degrade wetlands; they themselves have ecological structural characteristics of wetlands. We surveyed 32 agricultural, freeway, and forested ditch reaches across…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT:
Environmental injustice is a global phenomenon that entails the unequal distribution of
environmental resources as well as disproportionate exposure to
environmental hazards. Invariably, low socioeconomic populations carry a higher burden of negative
environmental conditions such as pollution and vulnerability to natural dangers, while having less access to
environmental resources such as vegetation, public parks, and adequate infrastructure. The case is no different in South Africa, where unequal and oppressive environments were deliberately created under apartheid governance, and of which the effects persist to this day.
The Social Work profession emphasises the importance of considering the person in their environment, yet there is very little empirical understanding of the impact of
environmental injustice on social functioning and development.
This qualitative study sought to investigate
environmental injustice in low socioeconomic settlements from the perspective of residents. Utilising a combined exploratory and descriptive research design, residents of a low socioeconomic settlement in Cape Town, South Africa, had been interviewed to collect thick descriptions of their lived experiences regarding
environmental injustice. A semi-structured interview schedule had been utilised to conduct in-person interviews. A purposive sampling method was utilised to attain a sample of 15 participants who met the sample criteria.
The key finding of this study is that residents of a low socioeconomic settlement face adverse
environmental conditions daily. This includes a lack of adequate access to resources such as clean water and basic sanitation
services; insufficient infrastructure; and natural or constructed spaces that render residents vulnerable to crime and
environmental dangers such as fires, flooding and toxic pollution. This lack of
environmental resources and exposure to dangers is contrary to the Constitution of South Africa, which ensures a safe environment, housing and basic
services to all citizens. Not only do the residents of low socioeconomic settlements experience these
environmental injustices, but their plight is perpetuated by little recognition of the impact of the environment or legal protection of their rights.
The findings also highlight the profound impact of these unequal
environmental conditions on the social functioning of residents and state of their social development within the low socioeconomic settlement. Residents are wrought with anxiety and fear; their self-concept is degraded; they feel undignified; community cohesion dissolves; spiritual and cultural alienation occurs; residents lose hope for the future; and crime prevails. With little intervention by the government and social sector to address these continued issues, residents are trapped in an oppressive cycle of
environmental injustice that prevents optimal social functioning and inhibits social development.
In the light of the findings, several recommendations are made for role players in different sectors,…

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the application of the ecosystem services concept can provide decision makers and stakeholders with additional relevant information for decisions regarding establishing of aquaculture on a local level, using the Lake Storsjön as a case study. In order to provide this knowledge, three different tasks are carried out within this thesis: the identification of the main ecosystem services provided by Lake Storsjön, the understanding of ecosystem services that will be affected by the expansion of aquaculture and the identification of the services that will be used for a possible expansion of the aquaculture sector. The CICES methodology (Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services) is used to identify the ecosystem services provided by Lake Storsjön. The understanding of the affected ecosystem services is carried out with the use of a Delphi-inspired approach. The identification of the services required for the establishment of aquaculture is driven by a cross-reference matrix. Lake Storsjön provides thirty-nine out of the fifty-nine ecosystem services included in the CICES. About half of these will be effected by environmental impacts connected to operations of ecosystem management required by aquaculture expansion, mostly with a low or medium degree of impact. An increase in the implementation of aquaculture might cause detrimental trade-offs with these ecosystem services: “Wild animals”, “Genetic materials from all biota“, “Disease control”, “Maintaining nursery populations and habitats” and “Filtration/dilution/sequestration/storage/accumulation by ecosystem”. An expansion of the aquaculture sector requires seven of the ecosystem services provided by Lake Storsjön. The vital services for this process are: “Surface water for non-drinking purposes”, “Filtration/dilution/sequestration/storage/accumulation by ecosystem” and “Chemical condition of freshwater”. These services have to be safeguarded and maintained in order to guarantee adequate conditions for an expansion of this sector. At the same time the expansion of aquaculture supports the service “Animals from in situ aquaculture”. The benefits connected to the implementation of aquaculture shall be economically assessed and compared to the actual economic value delivered by the other ecosystem services in order to further understand the positives and negatives outcomes of aquaculture expansion in an ecosystem services perspective. This is considered to be a relevant step for strategic and decision making processes concerning aquaculture expansion in Lake Storsjön. In addition to the economic perspective, it seems that the most relevant factor when discussing planning and development processes towards ecosystem services is the importance of not overshooting the resilience ability of the ecosystem in order to ensure the accessibility of the services to future generations. This belief is recommended to be…

▼ Forest management is a multi-objective problem. Managers must plan treatments and harvests while accounting for multiple factors such as
environmental regulations, economic and silvicultural constraints, and ecosystem
services. Decision support in forestry management can benefit from a comprehensive approach to develop strategies that meet all the constraints while also accounting for their effects on ecosystem
services. My research provides practical methods for decision support in forest management that can enhance forest stewardship and facilitate planning and communicating proposed actions and their effects to the public. Optimization can be effectively applied to solving such management problems, and can serve as a basis for an integrated approach. Mathematical models have the benefit of low cost associated with multiple reruns of an existing model, and often the addition of new conditions and/or data does not require changing the model's entire structure. Changes to the model's input and conditions are reflected in its output values, and these results can be conveniently summarized and interpreted for use in forest management. These qualities can be used to analyze how the provision of ecosystem
services changes depending on different management decisions, or strategies that are
subject to multiple
environmental regulations and constraints. My research resulted in a number of practically applicable methods and conclusions to facilitate planning and decision making in forest management. Approaches proposed in this dissertation demonstrated the potential to 1) evaluate
environmental regulations with regard to their unintended effects on land management as well as their effectiveness in achieving their intended goals; 2) identify the guiding factor for allocating fuel treatments to reduce fire hazard landscape-wide; 3) estimating
environmental risks associated with fuel treatments; and 4) quantify tradeoffs between management objectives. The mathematical programs described here produce management plans, allowing managers to analyze the effects and assess the tradeoffs of different strategies on ecosystem
services and land management, rather than designing and evaluating such strategies manually. The practical results are useful not only to achieve the stated management goals but also for communicating the potential consequences of the proposed actions to stakeholders and evaluating the possibilities for providing ecosystem
services for sale on the market.

▼ Catastrophes, such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, exemplify how accidents that damage the environment affect society in ways that exceed human and property losses.
Environmental damages caused by disasters are often continuous, influencing a broader portion of society, and might continually affect future generations moreso than the acute impacts associated with human health risks. As this paper demonstrates, policies in the United States and abroad affirm the importance of protecting the environment as a common asset for current and future members of society. The
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a required common tool implemented by decision-makers to analyze the
environmental impacts of their actions. Analysts around the world use various methods and techniques to assess the impacts of human actions on the environment. However, the effect of
environmental impacts on individuals’ well-being is not sufficiently assessed in current EIA methodologies. Although current methodologies discuss how the environment may be changed by a particular human action, the scholarship does not sufficiently address questions related to how the affected environment can change human life. In response, this paper aims to improve the completeness of EIA methodologies by proposing a capability approach for assessing the effect of
environmental impacts on humans’ well-being. Two human capabilities are specified to explicitly address the
environmental impacts of human actions. Evaluating the proposed capabilities in EIA procedures can enrich and complement current EIA practices and more fully assess human actions’ impacts.

▼ In a rare comparative analysis of governance towards sustainable governance, this thesis investigates three modes most prominent in the literature, i.e. adaptive management, transition management and payments for
environmental services. The three modes are here analysed in terms of their orientation towards sustainable development and towards steering. Using a set of criteria, i.e. equity, democracy, legitimacy, handling of scale issues and handling of uncertainty issues, each mode is also examined in terms of its orientation towards these criteria on governance for sustainable development. The three modes are studied according to their articulations in the literature, and according to experiences in practice in the Dutch fen landscape. The Dutch fen landscape reveals itself as an exceptional
subject for study, as it is a location where the three modes of governance are recognisable in empirical cases, thus enabling a comparative analysis. The Dutch fen landscape features a high population density, intensive economic usage, high pressure on natural resources, and dense institutional setting. In total 15 case studies are analysed in this thesis, for which actors involved were consulted and project documentation was reviewed. The present research observed that the studied modes provide some limited contributions to the sustainability challenge as encountered in the setting studied. No single mode was found to be more suitable to meet the challenge than the other two. The issues identified in the literature as central – i.e. lack of knowledge and cooperation, lack of transformation and innovation, and lack of appropriate economic instruments – are not the central issues in the empirical contexts studied. Central issues in the empirical context include intensive use of natural resources, conflicting interests of actor groups, diverse ideas about urgencies and priorities, and conflicts in or about the decision-making process, mainly about distribution of impacts and decisions perceived as unfair. Efforts to address the sustainability challenge in the Dutch fen landscape may be assisted by a broad, public debate at the supra-regional level among a representation of a large number of actors involved about the future of the setting – not necessarily to achieve consensus, but to clarify options, positions and priorities of groups involved. Analysis of the criteria on governance for sustainable development shows that the setting studied may be further assisted by insights into options to achieve fair and acceptable decision making, especially about distribution of losses and gains. Findings indicate that understandings of the modes of governance in the academic debate may be enhanced by addressing observed equity and legitimacy issues and handling of scale issues. Strikingly, diagnosis of the ‘sustainability problem’ receives barely any attention in the literature on governance for sustainable development. Understandings of these modes would be further enhanced by better diagnosis of a sustainability challenge; that is,…

▼ The motivation for this study arose from the dual
observation that there are very few estimates of the local costs of
climate change in developing countries and that the few studies
that do exist rarely take into account the non-market value of
ecosystem
services. Using a case study of a coastal lagoon
ecosystem in Uruguay, I explore practical reasons for why this
might be the case. Informational difficulties related to
identifying local climate trends and the identification of
ecosystem
services as well as the relevance and feasibility of
monetary valuation methodologies are discussed using specific
examples. Three valuation methodologies are implemented to estimate
the monetary values of climate change impacts on specific ecosystem
services. The results suggest that climate change is affecting the
economic value of the coastal lagoon ecosystem. Implications for
local management and lessons learned from the case study are
discussed.

▼ Agricultural pests can be reduced or controlled by naturally-occurring predators and parasitoids, but effective management of this ecosystem service requires an understanding of the factors contributing to its delivery. Pest control services are thought to be enhanced by natural habitat in agricultural landscapes, based on a large body of research demonstrating positive relationships between predator or parasitoid abundance on farms and the amount of nearby natural habitat. However, there is little or no evidence for a concomitant increase in pest control – if "control" is defined as the maintenance of pest populations below a certain level. The difficulty in measuring pest control by pest densities is that it is unknown how much more abundant pests would be in the absence of their enemies. This dissertation investigates different aspects of pest control to assess whether and under what conditions natural habitat can provide this ecosystem service to farms, using the study system of cabbage aphids (Brevicoryne brassicae) and their syrphid predators (Diptera: Syrphidae) in broccoli (Brassica oleracea) on California's Central Coast. A major factor that may affect the potential for natural habitat to provide pest control services is the presence of alternate host plants for pests within the weed community surrounding the farm. Physiological experiments show that one weedy relative of broccoli, black mustard (Brassica nigra), could serve as more than merely an alternate host. Due to its toxic chemistry, B. nigra allows cabbage aphids to develop more quickly than when on broccoli, and to build a mustard bomb that can compromise or kill their syrphid predators. Weedy B. nigra may provide a refuge from an important predator and thus could be serving as a source of aphid pests to crops. The potential for habitat around the farm to benefit pests as well as natural enemies is an important consideration in understanding the impact of habitat complexity on pest control services.Underlying spatial variation in pest distributions (whether due to alternate host plants or a number of other factors such as microclimate and dispersal) makes it difficult to detect the contribution of natural enemies to overall pest control. A cage experiment holding initial aphid densities constant across a landscape gradient measures the effect of habitat complexity on pest reduction by natural enemies, and reveals the importance of habitat at the landscape level as well as at the local on-farm level late in the growing season. Reduction of cabbage aphid densities is up to four times higher at more complex sites. The degree to which habitat at one scale could compensate for a lack of it at the other is dependent on aphid colonization and population growth early in the season, determined by abiotic factors such as temperature and dispersal patterns. In addition to considering such variation across spatial scales, this dissertation tackles variation in pest populations and the delivery of pest control services across temporal scales. A three-year…

The facilities sustainability is a premise for a global sustainable development. Therefore, this thesis aims to recognize what are the new aspects of facilities management to be developed to ensure existing buildings performance and its evolution along time. The model presented in this thesis for the management of facilities sustainability is drawn from the characterization of the activities usually performed by the facilities managers, which is a quite new staff member in the real estate market, but that already has demonstrated its importance in terms of reducing operating costs and value appreciation. The buildings evaluation and certification models and the environmental management systems also help in preparing this management model, as they present requirements and relevant tools to the issues of environmental performance and buildings management. Thus, based on the concept of management performance, the model proposed by this thesis suggests management guidelines and some requirements for assessing the performance of existing buildings in all kinds of typologies. The goal is to provide a concrete way to insert sustainability issues in the daily routine of facilities managers through a systematic management and a key parameters control.

▼ Cities are currently facing numerous challenges and uncertainties - climate change, aging infrastructure, growing urbanization - with many turning towards green infrastructure (GI) as a possible solution. Perhaps the most common application of GI is for stormwater management, though some cities are also hoping to use GI to combat climate change and urban heat islands, recharge groundwater supplies, and restore habitat for native fish and wildlife. Though many municipalities are using GI, few have a comprehensive vision for GI or consider all the possible benefits when planning, siting, and designing new sites. As a result, efforts remain largely uncoordinated and disjointed, with many missed opportunities. This is partly because the exact benefits of GI remain largely unquantified. Without knowing what to expect, cities are hindered in their efforts to integrate GI into broader goals and coordinate across programs. To address this need, this dissertation adopts a mixed method approach to address some of the knowledge gaps surrounding GI's co-benefits. Specifically, statistical modeling, participatory engagement, and complex, multi-agent modeling are used to more clearly define and measure the ES available from various GI sites. For all efforts, New York City was used as a case study, although the methods used here are applicable to all cities. First, this research focused on quantifying the benefit of a single ES, mitigation of
environmental disturbances, during Hurricane Sandy. This is a service often attributed to GI, but poorly understood in urban settings. Despite the numerous anecdotes that stated GI had protected people and property from the worst of Sandy, results of this research suggest GI is limited in its ability to provide protection during extreme coastal events. The second part of this research used stakeholder interviews and surveys to quantify the value of all ES from multiple GI types. Results suggest that NYC could get more value from its GI investments through minor changes to program, e.g. including more community gardens and refocusing messaging away from stormwater management, a
services New Yorkers do not value. Lastly, this research used an agent model to simulate two different approaches to greening in NYC and measure physical, social, and economic consequences of GI looking specifically at how stormwater capture, public approval, and the economic value of these new investments will change over time. Simulations indicate that NYC is capable of meeting, and even exceeding, the stormwater management potential of its current program by taking a more multifunctional approach to GI and trying to address community needs first, and stormwater second. The results suggest that integrating GI with other initiatives, including improving resilience, should improve the co-benefits available for New Yorkers, including stormwater management
services. The approaches taken in this research pilot methodologies for quantifying and calibrating the value of benefits of GI according to local preferences and…

▼ Salt marshes have been modified for mosquito control since the early 1900s. Open marsh water management (OMWM) is a mosquito control technique first applied in New Jersey in the 1950s. It has been extensively used in the mid-Atlantic and also in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Florida, and Louisiana. This practice involves excavation of areas of marsh, constructing shallow ponds to provide habitat for mosquito larvae-eating fish with the goal of reducing mosquito populations. Nearly half of Barnegat Bay, New Jersey’s coastal marshes have been subject to OMWM since 1976, and its effects on ecosystem function are not well understood. Here, we assess the impacts of OMWM on the carbon balance of salt marshes associated with the conversion of intact vegetation to open water ponds. Using a precise object-based image analysis classification technique, we found that over 7,000 ponds, approximately 3% of Barnegat Bay’s coastal marshes, have been constructed for mosquito control. Using state of the art IR technology to examine in-situ greenhouse gas fluxes in Barnegat Bay, we found evidence to suggest that the conversion from intact plants to open water ponds negatively shifted the carbon balance of the salt marsh, both within the footprint of the constructed pond as well as within the area where deposition of sediment has prevented the recolonization of marsh vegetation. We conclude that this management technique has significantly reduced the carbon sequestration capacity of Barnegat Bay’s tidal wetlands.

▼ Impacts on parks and protected areas are modifying ecosystems that provide
benefits to sustain human health and well-being. Compelling evidence of ecological and
economic values has been gathered to better understand the implications of these
changing social-ecological conditions; however, social values have received
considerably less attention. There is a strong need to integrate disciplinary perspectives
on the value concept and illustrate the full value of nature experienced through outdoor
recreation activities. My dissertation drew from theoretical frameworks in psychology,
economics, and ecology to better understand the multiple values of Channel Islands
National Park (CINP), California, U.S. Specifically, I examined “held” value
orientations, “assigned” values of ecosystem
services, and ecological values of the
CINP. In first of three papers, I tested the value-belief-norm (VBN) theory of
environmentalism to determine the psychological processes driving low-impact behavior
among outdoor recreationists. I observed that behavioral engagement was more strongly
related to biospheric-altruistic held values than egoistic concerns. Also, moral norm
activation was a direct antecedent to behaviors that minimized the spread of invasive
species, degradation of archeological artifacts, and overfishing in marine protected areas.
In the second paper, I investigated how
environmental worldview shaped the spatial
dynamics of assigned values for ecosystem
services on Santa Cruz Island within the
CINP. Using Public Participation Geographic Information Systems methods, I found
that held value orientations (i.e., biocentrism, anthropocentrism) manifested different
values ascribed to marine and terrestrial environments. In the third paper, I compared
assigned biodiversity values to spatially-explicit measures of ecosystem structure and
function using a Social Values for Ecosystem
Services (SolVES) mapping application
and Maximum Entropy modeling. My results showed that distance to features relevant
for park management, carbon sequestration, species richness, elevation, vegetation
density, and several categories of land cover predicted the locations and intensity of
preferences for biodiversity on Santa Cruz.

▼ Intention for this study is driven by finding patterns that may be shown to reveal primary factors of influence for the abundance and diversity of wetland birds. These correlations may be used to promote wetland management strategies for the benefit of waterbird species, and help illuminate current local wetland conditions for waterbirds, respectively. The idea is to help enliven individuals to become a more conscious steward and manipulator of our environment through incorporating structural and biological components into wetland development and management strategies, and broadly speaking, urban development practices.

▼ Many poor households in South Africa find themselves living in informal housing and only become proprietors of formal housing via the government subsidy scheme for core low-cost housing, thereby also realizing their constitutional right to housing. The subsidy is however limited and it largely determines materials, and construction methods used. Obtaining a formal low-cost dwelling means that basic
services such as electricity, sanitation, water and waste collection, is available to the home owner. Formal low-cost housing settlements are commonly located in poor areas and recipients of the housing subsidy are commonly unemployed or have low-income jobs, and frequently originate from informal settlements where
services, albeit limited and often communal, were provided at no cost. This study sought to assess the combined effect of relocating from an informal dwelling to a formal low-cost dwelling and receiving individual house-based basic
services of electricity, water, sanitation and waste collection, on
environmental- and household health. An ecological study design was used whereby data was collected at "baseline" while households were living in the informal settlement, and again at "2 years relocated" i.e. 2 years after moving in to the formal low-cost dwelling. The study population included all households residing in the Phumlani- and Pelican Park- Zeekoevlei Informal area in the year 2000, who were on the waiting list to receive low-cost core housing units in Phumlani Village and were due to be relocated there. Due to the rapid pace at which construction of new homes occurred not all households could be captured whilst living in the informal settlement, i.e. at "baseline". The actual sample subsequently consisted of 53 households at "baseline", and all, i.e. 124 households at "2 years relocated". Data was collected via a structured interview, whereby one respondent per household was interviewed by a trained fieldworker. Positive health improvements were reported by households in terms of personal and household health. Significant (p<0.05) positive improvements were found for households in formal lowcost housing at "2 years relocated" for exposures to: overcrowded living conditions (PR=1.159, 95%CI=1.153 – 3.328); indoor air pollution due to cooking and heating (PR=2.185, 95%CI=1.655 – 2.885); improper household waste management (PR=7.381, 95%CI=4.313 – 12.633 and inadequate sanitation (PR=0.365, 95%CI=0.255 – 0.523). The incidence of childhood diarrhoea episodes decreased significantly (PR=5.588, 95%CI=1.284 – 24.315) at "2 years relocated". Water access, availability and use also increased significantly (PR=0.212, 95%CI=0.125 – 0.358) 2 years after relocation. Factors that did not improve include levels of employment for which households were found to be worse off, with 16% of households having no person employed at "2 years relocated" as opposed to only 2% at ‘baseline”. Other factors remaining unchanged included incidences of respiratory, skin and eye infections amongst children ≤ 6 years old. Although…

▼ Two original computer simulation models are presented in this thesis. Although these models differ in their temporal, spatial, and structural dimensions, they are unified by a common purpose: to build quantitative understanding of
environmental resources and better inform their future management. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service, there are significant undiscovered reserves of oil and natural gas located in the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf region. While the existence of these energy resources is critical to the nation’s future economic well-being, of equal importance is the amount of already extracted energy that will be required to deliver the new fuel to society in a useful form; the difference between the two quantities is the net energy supply. “Energy return on investment” (EROI) is an indicator of the net productivity of an energy supply process; specifically, it is the ratio of gross energy production to total, direct plus indirect, energy cost. Chapter 1 describes a dynamic model designed to calculate the EROI of offshore energy extraction in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico from 1985 to 2004 under differing assumptions regarding energy cost and technology. In 2004, the EROI of the process is estimated to range from 10 to 25 depending on how comprehensively energy costs are defined. In comparison, the EROI of U.S. onshore petroleum extraction in the 1930s was at least 100. Ecosystem
services are those functions of ecosystems that support, directly or indirectly, human welfare. Although interest in ecosystem
services has surged in recent decades and is currently still on the rise, these phenomena have yet to be universally quantified. The current Multi-scale, Integrated Models of Ecosystem
Services (MIMES) project is an ambitious attempt to do so through dynamic, spatially explicit modeling. As a part of this broad initiative, Chapter 2 details the development and testing of a model designed to measure and map the ecosystem service “water regulation” at multiple scales. The model is an extension of the well known and widely used “runoff curve number” method originally developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; it is applied to the Winooski watershed (Vermont, U.S.A.) and to the entire globe.
