1. Salvati, Alessandra. Tektosyne Three Architectures for Orchestra.

Degree: DMA, Music Theory and Composition (Music), 2012, University of Miami

Tektosyne is a collection of three pieces for symphonic orchestra. This thesis provides an aesthetic and technical analysis of it, with particular emphasis on the constructive processes at basis of the individual and overall structures, and the generation and proliferation of materials. The title is an ancient Greek word, “tektosyne,” referring to the carpentry and, more generally, to any craftsman or workman, from gymnastics to poetry. The idea of using it as a title – and framing these pieces as “architectures” – came from a conversation I had with an architect, and my attempt to translate for him the basic ideas of my project: a dynamic system of contrasting forces and tensions. Far from any intention to provide a comparison between architecture and music – that would obviously result simplistic and forced - this analysis is the result of my personal dialogue with architecture, and particularly with Vitruvius’ treatise De architectura, through my specific point of view as a composer. Tektosyne incorporates materials and techniques belonging to past traditions, in continuity with Western composers like Ligeti, Penderecki and Sofia Gubaidulina, who offered, in their works, re-interpretations of traditional techniques. Even though, in Tektosyne, the genesis and elaboration of the materials are based on consistent mathematical procedures, the interpretative key of this work is in its dramaturgic and communicative strategies, meant to establish a contact with the audience and offer an emotional and spiritual journey. Advisors/Committee Members: Lansing McLoskey, Charles Mason, Dennis Kam, Juan Chattah, T. Michael Sleeper.

2. Κυριάκη, Βασιλική - Ελεούσα - Ελένη. Το Γυμνάσιο - Τελετουργικό Εστιατόριο, κτίριο Χ,χ στο Ασκληπιείο της Επιδαύρου.

Degree: 2012, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΕΚΠΑ)

The subject of this study is the large Complex at Epidauros, called a ‘Gymnasium’ by previous scholars, a ‘Ritual Hestiatorion-Banqueting Hall’ by more recent specalists, but originally ‘Building X,x’, a conventional name given by the initial excavator. The original structures of the Complex are examined, namely the Main Building and its Propylon. The aim of the research was to resolve architectural issues related to individual elements, as well as to the entire unit, and to verify or dismiss previously published views regarding the use and identification of the building, through examination of its architectural remains. As to the study’s methodology, the basic starting point was the architectural material itself, both the previously known but inadequately studied and also new material that has been uncovered in recent excavations, which was, for the first time, considered as a whole. This approach has provided an abundance of data, that was then studied in connection with comparative material and led to new conclusions. In the Propylon the structure’s remains were thoroughly inspected and its individual architectural elements were morphologically and structurally resolved, fully and unambiguously, where the material allowed it (e.g. the elements of the ramp, the euthentiria, etc.), while particular consideration was given to special theoretical issues such as the existence of entasis in the Doric columns or the way in which ancient drums can be incorporated in theoretic graphically restored columns. From a synthesis of the new data emerged a new graphic restoration of the Propylon, which revises the graphic restorations of previous scholars. Other general issues of architectural design are also discussed and, though through comparisons with other propyla, influences and analogies are detected, it is nevertheless attested that the Propylon has original elements which indicate its founders possessed experience in design and compositional skills. In the Main Building the research provided valuable information concerning its superstructure, which held little interest for previous scholars. Thus, for the first time, parts of the Main Building were resolved, architectural members were identified and attributed to specific categories of structural entities (e.g. to the columns and entablature of the peristyle), cuttings were interpreted as to their function (e.g. in structural elements and in the bedrock, intended to accommodate stone couch supports) and material preserved in abundance was systematically examined (e.g. stone couch supports, thresholds, etc.). Based on the information derived from the architectural remains, answers were sought concerning the use of particular spaces. Symposion rooms were identified (which comply with the specific dimentional specifications of, for example, eptaklina and endekaklina rooms or that have distinctive features as in the larger halls), rooms where the use of water is attested, or other enclosed spaces believed to be associated with other beyond symposium-related ritual practices,…
