Estimating a Vineyard’s leaf area is of great importance when evaluating the productive and quality potential of a vineyard and for characterizing the light and thermal microenvironments of grapevine plants. The aim of the present work was to validate the Lopes and Pinto method for determining vineyard leaf area in the vineyards of Lisbon’s wine growing region in Portugal, with the typical local red grape cultivar Trincadeira, and to improve prediction quality by providing cultivar specific models. The presented models are based on independent datasets of two consecutive years 2015 and 2016. Fruiting shoots were collected and analyzed during all phenological stages. Primary leaf area of shoots is estimated by models using a calculated variable obtained from the average of the largest and smallest primary leaf area multiplied by the number of primary leaves, as presented by Lopes and Pinto (2005). Lateral Leaf area additionally uses the area of the biggest lateral leaf as predictor. Models based on Shoot length and shoot diameter and number of lateral leaves were tested as less laborious alternatives. Although very fast and easy to assess, models based on shoot length and diameter were not able to predict variability of lateral leaf area sufficiently and were susceptible to canopy management. The Lopes and Pinto method is able to explain a very high proportion of variability, both in primary and lateral leaf area, independently of the phenological stage, as well as before and after trimming. They are inexpensive, universal, practical, non-destructive methods which do not require specialized staff or expensive equipment

▼ Gentrification methodologies rarely intersect. Analysis of the process has been cornered to incorporate either in-depth, neighborhood case studies or large-scale empirical investigations. Understanding the timing and extent of gentrification has been limited by this dichotomy. This research attempts to fuse quantitative and qualitative methods to discern the impact of gentrification between census tracts in East Nashville, Tennessee. By employing archival research, field surveys, and census data analysis this project attempts to comprehend the conditions suitable for gentrification to occur and its subsequent effect on residents and the built environment. A model was generated to determine the relationship between a-priori knowledge and empirical indicators of gentrification. Trends were gleaned between these methods, although gentrification’s chaotic and complex nature makes it difficult to pin down.

▼ A critical question faced by industrial
leaders is “which aspects of our value chain should we perform
internal to our organization and which aspects should we source
externally?” This demarcation of firm boundaries has been
increasingly studied from the perspective of outsourcing.
Outsourcing can be defined as the complete transfer of a business
process that has been traditionally operated and managed internally
to an independently owned external service provider. Outsourcing
can further be conceptualized as a process which begins with
developing a strategic and financial business case for outsourcing,
followed by implementing the external sourcing model, and
ultimately managing the relationship with the provider(s). Despite
the surging popularity of outsourcing in practice, evidence from
multiple sources suggests that a surprising percentage of
outsourcing efforts fail to realize performance expectations. Given
these observations, the research objective was to identify the
salient management practices throughout the outsourcing process
that drive performance. The research objective
was empirically addressed using a cross-sectional survey to collect
detailed data on 198 outsourcing initiatives representing a diverse
set of outsourcing experiences. Factor analysis was used to
establish the validity and reliability of the measurement model,
which includes five constructs representing aspects of the
outsourcing process. Structural equation modeling was used to
evaluate the hypothesized relationships among these latent
constructs and outsourcing performance. The
analysis clearly identifies the management practices that are
germane to realizing outsourcing performance objectives. The
structural model was able to explain 36% of the variance in
composite performance. Outsourcing firms that conduct an extensive
strategic evaluation of the outsourcing opportunity and are
committed to establishing a cooperative relationship with the
service provider(s) are significantly more likely to realize the
full benefits of their outsourcing efforts. Implementation
practices, including employee involvement and contracting, are not
sufficient to distinguish between well performing and poor
performing outsourcing initiatives. The research findings also
suggest that the relationship between strategic evaluation and
performance is mediated by relationship management practices. These
insights offer valuable guidance to outsourcing practitioners in
terms of how sourcing resources should be applied in order to
maximize the benefits realized from their outsourcing
initiatives.

▼ Empirical risk minimization (ERM) problems express optimal classifiers as solutions of optimization problems in which the objective is the sum of a very large number of sample costs. An evident obstacle in using traditional descent algorithms for solving this class of problems is their prohibitive computational complexity when the number of component functions in the ERM problem is large. The main goal of this thesis is to study different approaches to solve these large-scale ERM problems.
We begin by focusing on incremental and stochastic methods which split the training samples into smaller sets across time to lower the computation burden of traditional descent algorithms. We develop and analyze convergent stochastic variants of quasi-Newton methods which do not require computation of the objective Hessian and approximate the curvature using only gradient information. We show that the curvature approximation in stochastic quasi-Newton methods leads to faster convergence relative to first-order stochastic methods when the problem is ill-conditioned. We culminate with the introduction of an incremental method that exploits memory to achieve a superlinear convergence rate. This is the best known convergence rate for an incremental method.
An alternative strategy for lowering the prohibitive cost of solving large-scale ERM problems is decentralized optimization whereby samples are separated not across time but across multiple nodes of a network. In this regime, the main contribution of this thesis is in incorporating second-order information of the aggregate risk corresponding to samples of all nodes in the network in a way that can be implemented in a distributed fashion. We also explore the separation of samples across both, time and space, to reduce the computational and communication cost for solving large-scale ERM problems. We study this path by introducing a decentralized stochastic method which incorporates the idea of stochastic averaging gradient leading to a low computational complexity method with a fast linear convergence rate.
We then introduce a rethinking of ERM in which we consider not a partition of the training set as in the case of stochastic and distributed optimization, but a nested collection of subsets that we grow geometrically. The key insight is that the optimal argument associated with a training subset of a certain size is not that far from the optimal argument associated with a larger training subset. Based on this insight, we present adaptive sample size schemes which start with a small number of samples and solve the corresponding ERM problem to its statistical accuracy. The sample size is then grown geometrically and use the solution of the previous ERM as a warm start for the new ERM. Theoretical analyses show that the use of adaptive sample size methods reduces the overall computational cost of achieving the statistical accuracy of the whole dataset for a broad range of deterministic and stochastic first-order methods. We further show that if we couple the adaptive sample size scheme…

▼ Nanometer-scale silicon shows extraordinary electronic and optical properties that
are not available for bulk silicon, and many investigations toward applications in optoelectronic
devices are being pursued. Silicon nanoparticle films made from solution
are a promising candidate for low-cost solar cells. However, controlling the properties
of silicon nanoparticles is quite a challenge, in particular shape and size distribution,
which effect device performance. At present, none of the solar cells made from silicon
nanoparticle films have an efficiency exceeding the efficiency of those based on crystalline
silicon. To address the challenge of controlling silicon nanoparticle properties,
both theoretical and experimental investigations are needed. In this thesis, we investigate
silicon nanoparticle properties via quantum mechanical modeling of silicon
nanoparticles and synthesis of silicon nanoparticle films via colloidal grinding.
Silicon nanoparticles with shapes including cubic, rectangular, ellipsoidal and flat
disk are modeled using semi-
empirical methods and configuration interaction. Their
electronic properties with different surface passivation were also studied. The results
showed that silicon nanoparticles with hydrogen passivation have higher HOMOLUMO
gaps, and also the HOMO-LUMO gap depends on the size and the shape
of the particle. In contrast, silicon nanoparticles with oxygen passivation have a
lower HOMO-LUMO gap. Raman spectroscopy calculation of silicon nanoparticles
show peak shift and asymmetric broadening similar to what has been observed in
experiment.
Silicon nanoparticle synthesis via colloidal grinding was demonstrated as a straightforward
and inexpensive approach for thin film solar cells. Data analysis of silicon
particles via SEM images demonstrated that colloidal grinding is effective in reducing
the Si particle size to sub-micron in a short grinding time. Further increases in
grinding time, followed by filtration demonstrated a narrowing of the Si particle size
and size-distribution to an average size of 70 nm. Raman spectroscopy and EDS data
demonstrated that the Si nanoparticles contain oxygen due to exposure to air during
grinding. I-V characterization of the milled Si nanoparticles showed an ohmic behaviour
with low current at low biases then Schottky diode behaviour or a symmetric
curve at large biases.

▼ As software systems grow in size and complexity, their development and maintenance are becoming increasingly challenging. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) has been proposed as a means to increase the developer's productivity of such large-scale complex software systems. Despite its benefits, MDE has not been fully adopted in the software industry due to several barriers. Research has shown that modelling tools are amongst the top barriers for the industry's reluctance to adopt MDE, mostly because there is a little investigation of the modellers' interactions with modelling tools when editing and debugging models, which are cognitively difficult tasks. More specifically, MDE tool research has not considered 1) a thorough analysis of modellers and their tasks, to understand their challenges of using modelling tools, 2) the underlying human-cognitive factors, and 3) a systematic assessment of the effectiveness of proposed solutions (i.e., tooling techniques) on human users.
This thesis argues that MDE tools can be enhanced to overcome (some of) the challenges of adoption by considering human-cognitive factors (i.e., user-centric) when designing and proposing model-easing techniques for model editors. We advance our thesis in three main steps. As a first step, we conducted an empirical study to identify the most-severe cognitive difficulties of modellers when using UML model editors. In our study, we asked the recruited subjects to perform several model-editing and model-debugging tasks. We collected information during the sessions that could help us understand the subjects' cognitive challenges. The results show that users face multiple challenges, amongst which the most prominent challenges are remembering contextual information when performing a particular modelling task; and locating, understanding, and fixing errors in the models.
In the second step, we identified the cognitive factors that drive the most prominent challenges and subsequently devised several tooling advancements that provide enhanced cognitive support and automation in the users' interaction with a model editor. The philosophy behind our tooling advancements is to provide the contextual information that are relevant to performing a particular modelling task, thereby, alleviating the modellers' cognitive challenges of recollecting information from different diagrams. We also proposed an on-the-fly error-resolution technique that aims at resolving errors as they occur. We implemented our Eclipse-based model-editor and embedded our tooling techniques in the tool.
Lastly, we conducted two empirical studies to assess the effectiveness of our model-editor on human users. The Context study aimed at evaluating our tool's ability to reduce the challenges of remembering contextual information, whereas the Debugging study aimed at assessing our tool's ability to improve the users' experience of debugging models. Our results reveal that our interfaces help users 1) improve their ability to successfully fulfil their tasks, 2) avoid unnecessary context…

▼ The main goal of this study was to determine the scope and limitations of some state-of-the-art
methods in computational chemistry, including both molecular mechanics and semi-
empirical and ab initio quantum mechanics, in the prediction of key properties of selected colorants and their intermediates. Specifically, prediction of equilibrium molecular geometry, wavelength of maximum absorption, mutagenicity via quantitative structure activity relationships (QSAR), photostability, and the photodegradation mechanism of some nonmutagenic organic pigments prepared from nonmutagenic benzidine analogs was studied. It is known that molecular geometry influences significantly electronic and thermodynamic properties of all compounds. Hence, the accurate prediction of geometries was assessed by the development of protocols using semi-
empirical and ab initio
methods, for use in comparisons with X-ray crystallographic data. In this regard, single crystals of ten compounds were grown and the associated X-ray structures solved.
The effectiveness of each model and protocol was tested by comparison of predicted bond angles, bond lengths, intramolecular hydrogen bond distances, and torsion angles to X-ray data. Electronic properties such as wavelength of maximum absorption were calculated using PPP, ab initio and ZINDO and compared with experimental max data.
In the case of semi-
empirical calculations, different
methods (AM1, PM3, CNDO, INDO, ZINDO, PPP) were employed. With regard to geometry optimization a combination of manual adjustments followed by MM2/PM3 calculations was superior to MM2/AM1 in the prediction of the equilibrium geometry of compounds 149-152. In addition, better results were obtained using PM3 versus AM1 when an optimized energy map was employed for these compounds. While PM3 was effective in predicting the equilibrium geometry of compounds 149-152, AM1 was superior to PM3 in predicting the equilibrium geometry of pigments 153-155. As to the prediction of electronic excitation energy, ZINDO was effective in predicting the wavelength of maximum absorption of pigments 153-155 and the equilibrium geometry and spin state of compounds 174a-b.
In the case of ab initio calculations, local and non-local DFT
methods were used to predict the equilibrium geometry of compounds 149-152, pigments 153-155 and C.I. Pigment Yellow 12. It was found that the resultant geometries were generally more accurate than those calculated using semi-
empirical methods, presumably due to a superior wave function.
Ab initio calculations, however, were not effective in identifying the spin state of compounds 174a-b. This suggests that spin calculations involving charged molecules are not yet feasible using ab initio. However, by comparing experimental magnetic susceptibility data for Fe3+-complexed dyes 174a-b with the calculated spin from ZINDO (INDO2/ROHF), it became clear that this is an appropriate method for calculating the spin state of metal complex dyes. In this regard, magnetic susceptibility measurements involving…

▼ Savannahs regulate an agro-ecosystem crucial for the production of domestic livestock, one of the main sources of income worldwide as well as in South African rural communities. Nevertheless, globally these ecosystem functions are threatened by intense human exploitation, inappropriate land use and environmental changes. Leaf area index (LAI) defined as one half the total green leaf area per unit ground surface area, is an inventory of the plant green leaves that defines the actual size of the interface between the vegetation and the atmosphere. Thus, LAI spatial data could serve as an indicator of rangeland productivity. Consequently, the accurate and rapid estimation of LAI is a key requirement for farmers and policy makers to devise sustainable management strategies for rangeland resources.
In this study, the main focus was to assess the utility and the accuracy of the PROSAILH radiative transfer model (RTM) to estimate LAI in the South African rangeland on the recently launched Landsat 8 sensor data. The Landsat 8 sensor has been a promising sensor for estimating grassland LAI as compared to its predecessors Landsat 5 to 7 sensors because of its increased radiometric resolution. For this purpose, two PROSAIL inversion
methods and semi-
empirical methods such as Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were utilized to estimate LAI. The results showed that physically based approaches surpassed
empirical approach with highest accuracy yielded by artificial neural network (ANN) inversion approach (RMSE=0.138), in contrast to the Look-Up Table (LUT) approach (RMSE=0.265). In conclusion, the results of this study proved that PROSAIL RTM approach on Landsat 8 data could be utilized to accurately estimate LAI at regional scale which could aid in rapid assessment and monitoring of the rangeland resources.

▼ The EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) is about to come in force in May 2018. It poses new queries for both policymakers and businesses. Policymakers want o know how effective the new EU GDPR will be while the businesses would like to know how the EU GDPR should be implemented. To answer that question,
empirical studies on how businesses/organizations implement privacy and data protection as well as their perception towards the EU GDPR are needed. This thesis aims to answer the fill this gap by mixed
methods. Literature review and interview are exercised to get the current practices, while survey and statistic analyses are done to investigate the organizations' plans to change related to the EU GDPR. The findings are interesting, which include but not limited to the existence of DPO and organizations' high dependency would not limit the organizations' plan to change. Based on the findings, a number of recommendations are formulated for both policymakers and the practitioners, such as the encouragement to designate a DPO, to specify different approach of enforcement by policymaker for different industrial sectors and to be open to having menu of contracts by organizations for a balanced flexibility.

▼ This dissertation empirically examines factors that challenge revenue management practices in travel industry – air-travel and lodging. In particular, it focuses on strategic interactions among firms and strategic interactions between firms and customers. While most traditional revenue management focuses on single firm problems, better understanding competition and customers recently become two emerging themes in both theories and practices of revenue management. Meanwhile, with 20 years' successful implementation of sophisticated revenue management systems in both airline and hotel industries, they have accumulated rich data to better understand threats and opportunities currently facing both industries. Furthermore, with the proliferation of online distribution channels, extensive information has been made available to both customers and competitors. How to utilize such opportunity to understand customers and competition remains a question to both industry professionals and academic researchers.
This dissertation contains three parts. The first part studies implications of strategic alliances in the airline industry. Airlines in the same alliance are competitors and partners at the same time. After alliances are formed, airlines' networks are expected to be consolidated and capacity redundancies would be eliminated, as intensity of competition decreases among alliance partners. However, we find that alliance partners seek to overlap more in their networks. We also find evidence that average prices increase by about $11 per one-way segment coupon in markets where two partners are both present. After ruling out other plausible competing mechanisms, we conclude that these findings are most likely driven by multimarket competition. The second part of the dissertation studies travelers' strategic decision to delay purchases in anticipation of price decreases when purchasing air-tickets. By estimating a structural model on booking and posted fare data, we find that 4.9% to 44.9% of the population are strategic, and that incorporating such strategic customer behavior will increase revenues by 3% to 5% in certain city-pair markets. The third part of the dissertation bridges the two themes by applying a consumer-centric lens to better understand competition in hotel industry. Using online search and clickstream data, we propose a methodology to identify key competitors based on which hotels customers have compared. This approach also provides a network view of localized competition structure. We also find that there is approximately 50% mismatch between competition sets perceived by customers and hoteliers. Independent hotels and distant hotels are usually left out of competition sets.

▼ It has been shown that the most straightforward approach
to testing for the difference of two independent population
proportions, called the Wald procedure, tends to declare
differences too often. Because of this poor performance, various
researchers have proposed simple adjustments to the Wald approach
that tend to provide significance levels closer to the nominal.
Additionally, several tests that take advantage of different
methodologies have been proposed.
This paper extends the work of
Tebbs and Roths (2008), who wrote an R program to compare
confidence interval coverage for a variety of these procedures when
used to estimate a contrast in two or more binomial parameters.
Their program has been adapted to generate exact significance
levels and power for the two parameter hypothesis testing
situation.
Several combinations of binomial parameters and sample
sizes are considered. Recommendations for a choice of procedure are
made for practical situations.

▼ This paper intend to develop novel statistical methods to improve genomic data analysis, especially for differential analysis. We considered two different data type: NanoString nCounter data and somatic mutation data. For NanoString nCounter data, we develop a novel differential expression detection method. The method considers a generalized linear model of the negative binomial family to characterize count data and allows for multi-factor design. Data normalization is incorporated in the model framework through data normalization parameters, which are estimated from control genes embedded in the nCounter system. For somatic mutation data, we develop beta-binomial model-based approaches to identify highly or lowly mutated genes and to compare somatic mutations between patient groups. An empirical Bayes shrinkage approach is used to improve estimation of model parameters in all projects.

▼ In developing countries, significant resource constraints (e.g., funding and human resource limitations) hamper the effective delivery of health commodities from upstream suppliers to the last-mile, leading to supply chain failures such as “stock-outs.” For individuals who are deprived access to basic health commodities due to stock-outs, the consequences can be dire. For example, without reliable access to contraceptives, women may suffer unintended pregnancies, imposing economic and psychological burden, and unsafe abortions that often cause death. While the prevalence of health commodity stock-outs and the consequent repercussions for clients in developing countries are well-documented, there is a paucity of rigorous empirical research into the factors that drive such stock-outs. Focusing on this context, this dissertation aims to (i) empirically evaluate and uncover the factors that contribute to health commodity stock-outs in developing countries by leveraging field data collected from health facilities and using a combination of rigorous econometric and predictive modeling techniques; (ii) generate actionable insights that public health organizations, governments, and donors can use to mitigate the risk of stock-outs in developing countries. Toward addressing these objectives, the first dissertation study focuses on the effect of factors at the upstream level of the public health supply chain and explores the impact of the distribution model (i.e., pull vs. push) on the likelihood of stock-outs. At the downstream level, the second study investigates the role of practices that health facilities can use to mitigate the likelihood of stock-outs. The third dissertation study also focuses on the downstream level of the public health supply chain by examining how the provision of training to frontline healthcare providers can help reduce the likelihood of stock-outs. Taken together, the three dissertation studies serve as the first systematic attempt in the literature to conduct a rigorous empirical evaluation of the factors driving the stock-outs of health commodities in developing countries

▼ This dissertation empirically examines how an online grocer can improve its fulfillment and location-related operational decisions. In the first chapter, we examine whether fulfillment issues lead to customer defection. Based on our findings, we develop an inventory allocation rule to improve the retailer's performance. We estimate that our inventor allocation rule would increase revenue from affected customer by 2%. In the second chapter, we empirically solve the spatio-temporal location problem faced by our partner retailer. We introduce a novel procedure that combines machine learning and econometric techniques to estimate demand for potential new locations and optimize the pick-up location configuration and schedule. We estimate a revenue increase of at least 42% from the improved location configuration and schedule. In the third chapter, we study how the retailer can optimize the mix of delivery zones and fulfillment models using data-driven analytics. We show that the retailer’s choice of fulfillment offerings is economically important using a regression-discontinuity design framework. In the next step, we build and estimate a structural model based on our empirical evidence the parameters of our structural model.

▼ Several systems have been designed to monitor psychotherapy outcome, in which feedback is generated based on how a client's rate of progress compares to an expected level of progress. Clients who progress at a much lesser rate than the average client are referred to as signal-alarm cases. Recent studies have shown that providing feedback to therapists based on comparing their clients' progress to a set of rational, clinically derived algorithms has enhanced outcomes for clients predicted to show poor treatment outcomes. Should another method of predicting psychotherapy outcome emerge as more accurate than the rational method, this method would likely be more useful than the rational method in enhancing psychotherapy outcomes. The present study compared the rational algorithms to those generated by an
empirical prediction method generated through hierarchical linear modeling. The sample consisted of299 clients seen at a university counseling center and a psychology training clinic. The
empirical method was significantly more accurate in predicting outcome than was the rational method. Clients predicted to show poor treatment outcome by the
empirical method showed, on average, very little positive change. There was no difference between the
methods in the ability to accurately forecast reliable worsening during treatment. The rational method resulted in a high percentage of false alarms, that is, clients who were predicted to show poor treatment response but in fact showed a positive treatment outcome. The
empirical method generated significantly fewer false alarms than did the rational method. The
empirical method was generally accurate in its predictions of treatment success, whereas the rational method was somewhat less accurate in predicting positive outcomes. Suggestions for future research in psychotherapy quality management are discussed.

Lanthanide macrocyclic complexes, especially containing Gd(III) ions, are largely used as contrast agents in the medical diagnostic technique named Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Theoretical investigation of these compounds by molecular modeling methods is an emerging research area today. In this work we have performed a conformational study of the following supramolecular compounds: the macrocyclic ligands 1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane (DOTA) and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane- 1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (H4DOTA) and the macrocyclic complexes [Gd(DOTA).H2O]- and Gd(PhenHDO3A).H2O, where PhenHDO3A is (rel-10- [(5R,6R)-5,6-dihydro-6-hydroxy-1,10-Phenanthroline-5-yl)-1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7-triacetic acid). For this, we have developed and carried out a procedure that involves: (1) the sampling of the conformation space of these compounds through some short molecular dynamics at different temperatures and (2)…

For the research of new treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the PDE4 inhibitors are an attractive target. Our laboratory is interested in a new PDE4 inhibitors family based on the pyridazinone pattern. For this purpose, this thesis couples molecular modeling (docking: methodological development and application), organic synthesis and biological tests.First, the development of the molecular docking software AlgoGen was continued. AlgoGen (initially created at university of Lorraine in 2009) is a program which couples a genetic algorithm for the conformational research and a protein-ligand energy evaluation at the quantum semi-empirical level while other software do this evaluation at a classical level. Quantum energy calculations are very time consuming. That is the reason why some modifications have been made to improve its efficiency for the conformational search. This software was then used for calculations on a set of 22 dimers (typical in biological molecular recognition) as well on 8 ligand-protein complexes.Secondly, eight inhibitors were synthesized and tested in vitro on the PDE4 target. To complete the experimental part, a structure-activity relationship study was carried out through a molecular docking to rationalize the measured…

▼ This thesis studies the impact of employment protection legislature on employment outsourcing via temporary help services. Given the recent trend of companies shifting away from traditional employment contracts to short term contracts one should study whether this is caused by more stringent introductions to employment protection legislation. As the usage of temporary hiring services over the course of the study has continued to increase David Autor attempts to disentangle implied contract's shock from other causes.
We evaluate David Autor's empirical study on exceptions to the employment at-will doctrine and how given exceptions affect the US labor markets from the standpoint of temporary help services. Autor makes use of a state-level time series aggregate data that follows the employment level and employment characteristics from 1979 to 1995. Autor finds that the implied contract exception to the employment at-will doctrine shows an incremental increase in the usage of temporary hiring services in states that adopt the implied contract exception to their legislature.
Using a smaller sample of data and entropy balancing method we make iterative changes to Autor's regressions to study whether his results can be validated with adjusted data. Entropy balancing is a data pre-processing method that balances control and treatment groups' independent variables prior to regressions. Given that states that adopt and the states that do not adopt the implied contract exception are characteristically very different, entropy balancing could validate Autor's results in a setting where control and treatment states are more comparable. Using entropy balancing and a smaller sample size do not uniformly confirm Autor's hypothesis that implied contract exception cause anz` increase in the usage of temporary hiring services.

▼ Small area estimation has become increasingly popular due to growing demand for such statistics. In order to produce estimates of adequate precision for these small areas, it is often necessary to borrow strength from other related areas. The resulting model-based estimates may not aggregate to the more reliable direct estimates at the higher level, which may be politically problematic. Adjusting model-based estimates to correct this problem is known as benchmarking.

Poliitikud, veesektori regulaatorid ja vee-ettevõtete juhid peaksid põhjalikult kaalutlema veeteenuste osutamist reguleerivate lepinguliste sätete ning ettevõtte nõukogu kasutamise mõju vee-ettevõtte soovitud rahaliste ja mitterahaliste eesmärkide saavutamisele.; Performance improvement in public services is recognised as a goal for many governments, and has resulted in a variety of public governance reform…

▼ A formal specification language used during the requirements phase can reduce errors and rework, but formal specifications are regarded as expensive to maintain, discouraging their adoption. This work presents a single-subject experiment that explores the costs of modifying specifications written in two different languages: a tabular notation, Software Cost Reduction (SCR), and a state-of-the-practice notation, Real-time Unified Modeling Language (UML). The study records the person-hours required to write each specification, the number of defects made during each specification effort, and the amount of time repairing these defects. Two different problems are specified—a Bidirectional Formatter (BDF), and a Bicycle Computer (BC)—to balance a learning effect from specifying the same problem twice with different specification languages. During the experiment, an updated feature for each problem is sent to the subject and each specification is modified to reflect the changes. The results show that the cost to modify a specification are highly dependent on both the problem and the language used. There is no evidence that a tabular notation is easier to modify than a state-of-the-practice notation. A side-effect of the experiment indicates there is a strong learning effect, independent of the language: in the BDF problem, the second time specifying the problem required more time, but resulted in a better-quality specification than the first time; in the BC problem, the second time specifying the problem required less time and resulted in the same quality specification as the first time. This work demonstrates also that single-subject experiments can add important information to the growing body of empirical data about the use of formal requirements specifications in software development.

▼ Nursing metaparadigm concepts of nurse, person, environment, and health are the conceptual building blocks which provide direction to nursing research and knowledge development (Fawcett & Desnato-Madeya, 2013). Interaction of person, nurse and environment facilitate optimal outcomes yet, there remains a need for research on the paradigm concept of environment and creation of a healing environment in particular. (Meleis, 2010).
The purpose of this study was to explore the strategies Christian nurses used to create a healing environment and enhance well-being for non-end-of-life, hospitalized patients from admission forward. Specific aims included identifying nurses’ perspectives on (1) the strategies Christian nurses used to create a healing environment and enhance well-being, (2) the outcomes they perceived resulting from these strategies, and (3) the factors they regarded as either enhancing or inhibiting the creation of the healing environments. An additional aim was description of characteristics of nurses who created healing environments and enhanced well-being.
In this qualitative, Glaserian grounded theory (GGT) study, interview data were collected via a demographic “Information about You” sheet (see Appendix D) and semi- structured interviews (see Appendix C for interview guide) of nurses (N = 15) until data saturation was reached. A criterion-based, purposive sample was recruited, and tape-recorded face-to-face interviews were transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using constant comparative
methods in consultation with a grounded theory expert.
“Charting the healing path” is the core category and consists of four phases: helping patients get better, fostering the healing environment, charting a healing path, and observing outcomes. Within this model are ten substantive categories of baseline assessment, being available, knowing as a unique individual, hearing immediate concerns, seeing from the patient and the nurse points of view, partnering with the patient, setting realistic goals, realizing best potential, and outcomes. See Figure 1 for a conceptual model.
The “charting the healing path” model informs development of the environment domain of nursing knowledge. Knowing the patient, the juncture of nurse and patient points of view, and the resultant nurse-patient partnership seek best potential outcomes to be realized incrementally during, and after, hospitalization.

▼ This dissertation focuses on the operational impacts of crowding in hospital emergency departments. The body of this work is comprised of three essays. In the first essay, "Waiting Patiently: An Empirical Study of Queue Abandonment in an Emergency Department," we study queue abandonment, or "left without being seen." We show that abandonment is not only influenced by wait time, but also by the queue length and the observable queue flows during the waiting exposure. We show that patients are sensitive to being "jumped" in the line and that patients respond differently to people more sick and less sick moving through the system. This study shows that managers have an opportunity to impact abandonment behavior by altering what information is available to waiting customers. In the second essay, "Doctors Under Load: An Empirical Study of State-Dependent Service Times in Emergency Care," we show that when crowded, multiple mechanisms in the emergency department act to retard patient treatment, but care providers adjust their clinical behavior to accelerate the service. We identify two mechanisms that providers use to accelerate the system: early task initiation and task reduction. In contrast to other recent works, we find the net effect of these countervailing forces to be an increase in service time when the system is crowded. Further, we use simulation to show that ignoring state-dependent service times leads to modeling errors that could cause hospitals to overinvest in human and physical resources. In the final essay, "The Financial Consequences of Lost Demand and Reducing Boarding in Hospital Emergency Departments," we use discrete event simulation to estimate the number of patients lost to Left Without Being Seen and ambulance diversion as a result of patients waiting in the emergency department for an inpatient bed (known as boarding). These lost patients represent both a failure of the emergency department to meet the needs of those seeking care and lost revenue for the hospital. We show that dynamic bed management policies that proactively cancel some non-emergency patients when the hospital is near capacity can lead to reduced boarding, increased number of patients served, and increased hospital revenue.

▼ Hydrological systems seem simple, "everything flows", but prove to be even more complex when one tries to differentiate and characterize flows in detail. Hydrology has thus developed a plurality of models that testify to the complexity of hydrological systems and the variety of their causal representations, from the simplest to the most sophisticated. Beyond a subjective complexity linked to our difficulty in understanding or our attention to detail, hydrological systems also present an intrinsic complexity. These include the nonlinearity of processes and interactions between variables, the number of variables in the system, or dimension, and how they are organized to further simplify or complicate the system's dynamics. The thesis addresses these aspects of hydrological complexity. An epistemological and historical analysis of the concept of causality explores the human understanding of hydrological systems. Based on empirical approaches applied to the limestone karstic system of the Lhomme at Rochefort in Belgium, the thesis then studies methods to analyze the nonlinearity of the Lhomme river recession and associate it with the geomorphological complexity of the watershed. The thesis also handles the discrimination of dominant dynamic behaviors in the hydrological continuum of the Rochefort caves subsurface based on an electrical resistivity model of the subsurface and clustering methods grouping time-series according to their similarity. Finally, the study maps the Rochefort Caves system's organization by detecting causal interactions between several environmental data - gravity, the dynamics of subsurface resistivity, and percolations measured in the caves - using time-series analysis and causal inference methods.
