▼ Challenged by nominal revenue growth rates in their developed home markets, many MNCs are enticed to drive revenue growth through geographic expansion. Thus, for many firms, launching into emerging markets has become a key growth priority. Because international expansion and the
marketing strategy guiding it is always challenging,
organizational learning is key. However, researchers have yet to closely examine the relationship between organizational learning and marketing launchstrategy. This research seeks to address that gap. When firms enter new markets, the marketing mix framework represents a subset of decisions they must make. This study analyzes an MNC’s 4Ps (product, price, place, and promotion) through the lens of
emergent strategy, exploring
how an MNC’s marketing launch
strategy in China emerges over time through knowledge acquisition. Using the case study method, this research examines how four types of knowledge acquisition—congenital, vicarious, experiential, grafting, and sensing and noticing—influence the firm’s marketing mix to emerge and change over time. A conceptual framework illustrates how each element of the marketing mix is realized or emerges through the four knowledge acquisition activities.

▼ This work endeavours to study deliberate as well as the emergent constituents of strategy making and implementation process within the telecommunications industry. Strategy when imposed by external forces such as governmental regulations and policies as well as stiff competition, companies in the telecommunications sector tend to find new directions for their operations. However, telecommunications companies that are open to explicit or specific strategies as well as tend to find a middle ground between these two strategies as it was evident from this study. There were factors that the telecommunications company could not have planned such as government’s requirement for the registration of details of their subscribers for policy making. Planned strategies within the telecommunications industry have a lot of advantages such insignificant reduction in revenue regardless of competition. From this study it is evidence that planned or deliberate strategies which are implemented with some level of flexibility have its own advantages.

▼ In the face of technological discontinuities and disruption, convergence and increased global com- petition, established firms need to transform their business models more rapidly, more frequently and more radically than in the past. In line with the open innovation paradigm, which states that firms can and should use both internal and external ideas and paths to market, corporates are now actively engaging with startups to deal with these rapidly changing conditions. Recently, an increase is also witnessed in the types of corporate-startup engagement that are available to corporates to create, interact with, collaborate with, invest in or acquire startups. History however shows that corporate- startup engagement is by no means easy. In the past, many engagement mechanisms such as corporate venturing have been widely adopted and soon abandoned. The lack of setting and pursuing clear objectives and failure to establish a link between startup engagement and overall corporate
strategy are considered important reasons for the lack of long-term success. This research contributes to the strategic use of corporate-startup engagement by corporate management by exploring the relation between corporate
strategy and the concepts of open innovation, corporate venturing and corporate-startup engagement. A new framework has been developed linking open innovation (with corporate-startup engagement as its subset) to corporate
strategy and the innovation ecosystem.

▼ As organisational environments become more global, they have changed drastically due to
environmental needs and demands resulting to strategic paradoxes. This ultimately encouraged
researchers to respond by using different models, asking particular questions like what a strategic
paradox is and under what conditions they occur. While this research focused on the intended and
emergent strategies, it is diffused across different areas of strategic management including;
strategy,
paradoxes, strategic paradoxes, as well as intended and
emergent strategies.
A continuum of different approaches in strategic making is crystallised from the literature. The
study suggests that the fast pace of environmental change provide managers unpredictable results
for their strategic commitment. The collision of strategic commitment and strategic uncertainty is
causing what Raynor (2007) calls the
strategy paradox. This study thus endeavoured to unite various
views regarding strategic paradoxes, while also sharpening its focus on intended and
emergent
strategies. This research utilised a qualitative research method by exploring the research questions.
The insights from the in-depth interviews formed the basis of the data that was analysed to produce
research findings. Results suggested that strategic paradoxes are difficult to avoid even though they
can be reduced if the
strategy is aligned with the environmental change.
The study aimed to make a positive contribution to the body of knowledge on
strategy paradoxes by
qualitatively exploring strategic paradoxes and hoping to provide answers, to what context do
intended and
emergent strategies impact the decision making and effectiveness of the Human
Sciences Research Council (SA).

▼ The Pathways to Prosperity (PtoP) Network at JFF has a bold vision: to reimagine how young people are prepared for the future of work in the United States. Launched in 2012, the PtoP Network is leading a national effort to improve education, workforce, and economic outcomes by building career pathways systems that prepare all young people for economically sustainable futures. This capstone examines my work to design and implement a strategy to engage high-level leaders (“the leads”) from different sectors and roles across the PtoP Network in intentional and deliberate activities to increase their impact, build their affinity for and connection to the Network, and advance the career pathways field. I examine design considerations for leaders of networks and elevate tensions inherent in the complex work of cross-sector collaboration. My analysis focuses on themes of delivering value and navigating uncertainty in the network design process, with implications for my leadership in the midst of ambiguity, for the future of the PtoP Network, and for collaboration across the education sector. Overall, the findings offer insights into the promise of networks to support field-building through careful design.

▼ Well-resourced urban school gardens can provide extensive and varying benefits for students, operating simultaneously within a tradition of community transformation through urban farming, and the U.S. public education system. Benefits of school gardens include empowering, affirming, and engaging activities and relationships; knowledge about food and environmental systems; improved nutrition; stress relief; increased physical activity; and experiential education – but these benefits occur within an unequal society in which certain benefits and harms are more likely to occur based on race, ethnicity, class, gender, and other identity markers. One of many disparate risks is the exposure to environmental toxins in urban landscapes. Using statistical analysis of surveys from adult and student school gardeners, soil samples, NYC Department of Education School Survey data, and public inventories of hazardous waste sites; as well as qualitative analysis of adult interviews and student open-ended responses, this dissertation addresses the overarching questions: How do school gardens provide personal and social benefits to students while minimizing environmental risks? What factors affect the distribution of these outcomes, and is the distribution just? Theoretical framing used to guide analysis is derived largely from social determinants of health, critical race theory, food justice, environmental justice, and social capital literature. I investigate social, economic, and environmental disparities in Brooklyn, NY middle and high school gardens. Some of the main findings include: The budget and administrative support received by gardens increases with the school proportion of white students (n = 24 schools) (Chapter 1); White male students report the highest feelings of affirmation in the garden space, replicating a disparity that is also recurrent in classroom settings (n = 122 students) (Chapter 2); The number of hazardous waste sites near schools with gardens increases with the school proportion of Black and Hispanic/Latinx students, and with the proportion of low-income students (n = 31 schools) (Chapter 4). Lastly, in a chapter highlighting students’ direct words, I explore the potential of school gardens to promote liberation for racially minoritized students, proposing a four-part framework that builds on movements for justice with which the garden intersects (Chapter 3). Overall, the dissertation explores the benefits and shortcomings of Brooklyn, NY school garden spaces with a focus on marginalized student populations.

▼ Problem:
To identify how the ideas for the reorganization at Mälardalen University surfaced and explain how the strategy then translated into the organization. This will be studied by using models intended for private organizations that hold relevance for public organizations.
- What parts of the process can be described as emergent, deliberate, intended, realized and unrealized?
- What influenced the reorganization process?
- In this process, how does Mälardalen University use the concept of strategy?
Purpose:
The aim of this thesis is to explain a strategic organizational change process in a large organization. The choice fell on Mälardalen University due to its accessibility and significant size. By interpreting the empirical material, the underlying causes will be brought to the surface. The result will aim to explain how a change process might occur in a large organization and how internal and external influences were reflected in the strategic path.
Method:
The empirical data collected for this thesis was obtained through qualitative semi-structured interviews with organizational members on a managerial level. One focal organization was used for a case study. The theoretical framework had a knowledge base, based on some theories by Henry Mintzberg. After the collection of primary data additional theories were added.
Results:
The reorganization at Mälardalen University was an emergent process where the solutions and impacts were altered and adjusted along the way. In this reorganization the process has been evolving and progressing within a frame created by a few predetermined desires and plans. It also became evident that strategy for Mälardalen University is a way to achieve a position where they can benefit from their competitive advantages. The position is the goal and the way in which to get there is not as important. This has opened up the process to be as emerging as it has been. This emergent process has been allowed to progress in changing directions where decisions are taken as the solutions are found, muddling their way through the process.

▼ This study was conducted to address a distinct lack of knowledge regarding strategizing as a function of social interaction. Social researchers like Critchley contend that an organisation should essentially be regarded as an evolving product of people’s continuous interaction resulting in shared meaning. In subscribing to Critchley’s premise, and assuming that
strategy inquiry is an empirically informed social science, the current study consequently set out to gain an understanding of how social interaction between practitioners shapes organisational strategizing and subsequent strategic outcomes. The
strategy-as-practice perspective served as an integrative lens for the current research. This perspective that subscribes to the practice turn in social research, focuses on the actual practices (praxis) of
strategy actors (practitioners) within unique organisational settings with unique strategizing tools, techniques and artefacts (practices).
Informed by the philosophical underpinnings of a pragmatic worldview and a qualitatively driven mixed methods approach, a case study design allowed for in-depth analyses of multiple sources of empirical data to facilitate an understanding of the research phenomena. In addition to exploring social interaction during episodes of
strategy practice, the current research investigated how practitioners’ motivations to interact shape and are shaped by ongoing interactions and meaning making. The current study also examined how external and internal organisational contexts, including organisational practices, influence and are influenced by ongoing social interactions. Two small private higher education institutions that reflect the typology of most private providers in the South African higher education landscape were selected for the case study. These private providers face numerous challenges in a tough current economic climate. Private providers further fulfil a pivotal role in the demand absorption of a growing need for higher education in South Africa. The main findings of the current research confirmed that strategizing at the two case study organisations is indeed mainly a function of social interaction. Strategizing is mostly shaped by people as emotional beings. Strategizing is the product of sometimes-irrational interactions and subsequent constantly evolving shared meanings and relationships between people. It is the social interaction between
strategy actors during episodes of
strategy praxis that serves as a social mechanism in transforming strategizing intent into
strategy outcomes. Different
strategy actors employ a wide array of techniques to get their ideas or views accepted during
strategy-related interactions. Findings indicated that the selected strategies at the two case study organisations are mostly not based on objective reasoning linked to a clear plan or vision, but rather on
strategy actors’ abilities in getting their ideas to be accepted by the group. Findings further suggested that the owners of the respective case study organisations strongly influence how…

▼ Because of the vital roles of industry in
sustainable development, it is essentialthat environmental
management is effective in preventing pollution. To this
end, environmental management systems have been implemented to a
growing extent inindustry. Moreover, this Ph.D. research has
demonstrated that environmentalmanagement efforts must be
systematic to use environmental performanceindicators effectively.
However, the research has also revealed that
environmentalmanagement systems did not necessarily improve
environmental performance. Inorder to enable development of more
effective environmental management, thisPh.D. research explored how
environmental management efforts affectedemployees, whether
effective environmental management might be contingentupon strategy
contexts, and how environmental strategy was developed. In
thecontext of emergent strategies, change, innovation and
complexity, the researchfor this dissertation examined effective
environmental management usinginterpretive methodology and case
studies. Noting that strategy could be emergent,i.e. emanate from
the organization rather than being imposed upon it, a goal of
theresearch was to understand the practice of management without a
predeterminedstrategy. The research findings demonstrated that
management systems behaveddifferently depending on if the strategy
context was deliberate, evolutionary oremergent. In deliberate
strategy contexts, formal management systems mayimprove performance
by reducing variability and risk. In evolutionary strategycontexts,
formal management systems were employed in internal competition
bychampions. In the context of emergent strategies, formal
management systemsseemed to be irrelevant or even impediments to
necessary change and innovation.

▼ Today the e-commerce market has become a bigger part of both organizations’ and consumers’ everyday-life. Earlier established strategies within retail can't be relied upon. The online-based organizations don’t act on the same conditions as traditional shops in terms of location, customer service and personal interaction to name a few. These are factors generally important to the traditional strategy formation within retail. E-commerce is an emerging market and to survive a well-formulated strategy formation is crucial in order to endure the environment. The aim of this research is to create an understanding of how strategy is formed in e-commerce organizations. In order to answer the research questions, a qualitative research, including a case study, have been performed. Empirical material has been conducted mainly through semi-structured interviews, with one of Sweden’s largest internet retailers, regarding their ink- and beauty supply segment. Whittington’s (2001) two perspectives; evolutionary and classical, have been used to get different viewpoints on the organization studied. We came to the conclusion that the key factors in strategy formation within e-commerce are experience in combination with available information about the environment they act within. When making recommendations for future studies, a suggestion has been made to examine the whole strategic process and review successful strategies as a consequence of well-analyzed formation. Finally, to examine the impact of maturity of organizations in relation to their strategic processes, would create an understanding of how the relationship between experience within the organization and the data accessible is constructed.

▼ Despite the many researches made on emergent strategies and project portfolio management, one can hardly find studies on the link between them. It can easily be assumed that emergent strategies and market dynamics have considerable effect on the portfolio of projects in organizations and, supposedly, give rise to emergent projects. We defined emergent projects to be untypical or irregular projects for the organization which are at the borderline or even outside the mainstream of the current portfolio of projects. These types of projects impact the company’s strategy with the aim to increase the organizations competitiveness. This study will try to find out the possible distinct characteristics and strategic impact of emergent projects on large organizations so that these kinds of projects can be properly recognized for what they really are and managed effectively.
We used a semi-structured interview method to collect data from six international companies in four countries. The countries are Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and Taiwan. Using template analysis method, we analyzed the collected data. The analysis confirmed our assumption that there is a correlation between emergent strategies and project portfolio management. Moreover, we found out some of the characteristics and strategic impacts of emergent projects. The results of the study, therefore, shows that emergent projects are kinds of strategic projects which have bigger significance and bring a higher sense of urgency to organizations than the normal projects in their portfolio. Furthermore, the study indicated that emergent projects do not need any different project management methodology than typical projects do. Nonetheless, emergent projects are characterized by rarity, disrupting routine operations, enhancing company-customer relationship, causing resource reallocation, bringing profit, demanding higher budget, opening both internal and external new opportunities, posing risk due to shorter planning phase and limited implementation time, and capturing higher attention from top management. The major result we have found out in the research about the strategic impact of emergent projects is that they have a higher potential to bring profit and new business opportunities which in total make organizations more competitive in their respective markets.
The theoretical and managerial implications of our research have a common idea that emergent projects should be recognized and categorized as strategic projects of organizations. Further studies should be carried out on how the dynamic situations of business environments and emergent strategies affect the project portfolio of organizations. Moreover, it is worth researching on how the idea of emergent projects are dealt in the studies of strategic project management and project categorization both in the academic and practitioners world. Overall, the study has brought the linkage between emergent strategies and project portfolio management into light through the discussion on emergent…

▼ Firm outcomes of decisions made by senior managers have been the subjects of intense scrutiny from
strategy researchers. Three dominant approaches to strategic decision making pervade this literature: rationality, political behavior, and intuition. Although several commentaries have been written on intuition, little is known about its essence, and its use in and impact for organizations. Nevertheless, managers are increasingly adopting this decision tool as an important and effective alternative or addition to more comprehensive and extensive approaches to strategic decision making.
Fundamentally, intuitions are nonconscious, holistic and fast associations of information elements that result in affectively charged judgments. While helpful, this definition of intuition is generic, and is thus limited in its function of isolating and substantiating the nature of intuitive decision making. In this work, I define intuition as a multi-construct and multi-level phenomenon and then attempt to answer the following question: “in making strategic decisions, do senior managers use their intuition when they actually should?”
My dissertation seeks to extend intuition research in the context of strategic decision making. Specifically, I aim to shed light into the intuitive phenomenon, its use in the context of strategic decision making, and its outcomes. This is an important contribution given that managers and researchers may have bought into intuition hastily and treated it too casually given its complexity. In short, I make several theoretical contributions to the literature: (1) conceptual refinement of intuition that delineates and define its major constructs; (2) conceptual development of collective intuition; and (3) theoretical development for factors driving the use and effectiveness of collective intuition.
On the empirical aspect of intuition research, measuring this organizational phenomenon has so far been a rather difficult and intimidating task. Definitional issues highlighted in the theoretical work may have played a role in slowing the progress of intuition research. Sound measures stem from strong construct definitions, and further contributions of my dissertation rest on the quality of the measures of intuition I use to test my models. Therefore, I developed and validated four new scales that reflect the multi-construct multi-level nature of intuition. The new measures of collective intuition show good reliability and construct validity. In addition to the multi-phase and multi-sample scale development process, I describe an exploratory study, in which these new scales were used to test a subset of my hypotheses. Finally, post-hoc analyses reveal promising findings concerning the interplay among the three dimensions of the strategic decision making process – collective intuition, rationality, and political behavior.

▼ Purpose – The aim of this thesis is to explore the possibility of text mining social media, for consumer insights from an organizational perspective.
Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory, single case embedded case study with inductive approach and partially mixed, concurrent, dominant status mixed method research design. The case study contains three different studies to try to triangulate the research findings and support research objective of using social media for consumer insights for new products, new ideas and helping research and development process of any organization.
Findings – Text mining is a useful, novel, flexible and an unobtrusive method to harness the hidden information in social media. By text-mining social media, an organization can find consumer insights from a large data set and this initiative requires an understanding of social media and its building blocks. In addition, a consumer focused product development approach not only drives social media mining but also enriched by using consumer insights from social media.
Research limitations/implications – Text mining is a relatively new subject and focus on developing better analytical tool kits would promote the use of this novel method. The researchers in the field of consumer driven new product development can use social media as additional evidence in their research.
Practical implications – The consumer insights gained from the text mining of social media within a workable ethical policy are positive implications for any organization. Unlike conventional marketing research methods text mining is social media is cost and time effective.
Originality/value –This thesis attempts to use innovatively text-mining tools, which appear, in the field of computer sciences to mine social media for gaining better understanding of consumers thereby enriching the field of marketing research, a cross-industry effort. The ability of consumers to spread the electronic word of mouth (eWOM) using social media is no secret and organizations should now consider social media as a source to supplement if not replace the insights captured using conventional marketing research methods.

▼ Meta-synthesis is an approach to synthesize qualitative research results. Originally proposed in the medical field and in education, this approach helps to advance current knowledge by generating a new interpretive synthesis. Since current research practices and knowledge development in emergency management is excessively divergent, there has been a need for a synthesis of knowledge from practice and research. One of the main arguments of this study is that the need is met by this study of a meta-synthesis.
In this research, I suggested that many research results dealing with the issue of how to improve the performance of emergency management can be integrated into strategies for network management in emergencies. I used the term strategies in a much more generalized way to capture the idea of managerial/behavioral skills, plans, and insights for emergency management. The meta-synthesis was conducted from a keyword search, surveys, and expert interviews, which identified representative studies in emergency response. The review process of the representative studies is captured in a two-by-two matrix (intervention point axis and planning-improvisation axis) as a way of presenting the meta-synthesis results.
This study then, turned to an analysis of reports of the Hurricane Katrina response using the meta-synthesis results. Qualitative content analysis was used as a method for the analysis. Reports from the White House, the House of Representatives, and the Senate are the target documents of the analysis. While conducting the analysis, I argued that the attempt of interpreting the failures of Katrina response into the failures of network management strategies provides clearer understandings regarding what went wrong and what was lacking. Furthermore, I argued that the way of thinking attempted in the analysis is a constructive one in that it provides an instructive action agenda for future disasters by connecting lessons learned to the strategies for emergency management.

▼ This thesis reports the results from an in-depth longitudinal study of how a new strategy actually forms in practice. The focus is on a Swedish multinational firm called the “MECH Group” and its efforts to combine environmental and business concerns in the new strategy called “Positive
Impact.” Detailed examinations of people and their activities and practices uncover the dynamic and firm-wide aspects of strategy formation in general, and the greening of business in particular.
The study shows how the combination of the strategy-as-practice and strategy process
traditions can yield new insights. It contributes to the theorizing about strategy formation in three ways. First, it provides detailed real-time activity-level descriptive accounts about this phenomenon. Four kinds of activities that have strategic outcomes are identified and analyzed: visionary, prescribed, evaluative, and unrecognized. Second, it broadens the focus from top management
and their intended activities to include other people in the organization and their activities, which can emerge with little or no involvement from top management. Six types of internal strategy practitioners are shown to be influential in the strategy formation process, either consciously or unconsciously, directly or indirectly: top management, strategy task force, corporate staff management,
temporary governance, operational middle management, and operational-level employees. Third, it connects
activity- and firm-level findings. More specifically, it lets a rich understanding about an actual practice inform the theorizing about the convergence of deliberate and emergent strategies. Three different kinds of integrating functions are identified: i. downward implementation, ii. upward recognition, and iii. horizontal facilitation.
The findings also contribute to the knowledge about the greening of business. By developing
a detailed empirical account about the practice of integrating environmental issues into business strategy, the study provides a descriptive view as a complement to the many normative ideas that are found in the existing literature. It also connects the greening of business to general strategic management theorizing.
Furthermore, this study provides a methodological contribution in terms of how the richness of strategy formation can be researched, especially concerning the capturing of relevant empirical material in real time. It demonstrates the importance of having significant access to, and knowledge about, the organization under scrutiny. Moreover, it shows how a focus on the
practitioners and their doing in the intermediate micro-context can enable the study of multiple people involved in various activities that have strategic outcomes.
Finally, the improved understanding of both how a new strategy actually forms in general,
and of how environmental issues are integrated into business strategy in particular, provides more realistic grounds upon which implications for practicing managers can be derived.

▼ In this study an effort is made to bring more clear insights into the effect of management control systems on
strategy formation. The content of management control systems does not have a final conclusion. Primary components of management control systems include managerial accounting and other controls. In the other hand, the process of
strategy formulation mainly divided into two ways which are deliberate
strategy and
emergent strategy. The deliberate
strategy is more applied to stable and predictable conditions while
emergent strategy is a prompt response of enterprise to strategic uncertainties. Different perspectives of management control systems will separately help for two kinds of
strategy formulation.
This is an exploratory study which is contingent on size of organizations. Choosing steel industry as interviewers, the study divided them into two groups that are three large companies and three middle & small companies and proceeded elite interview separately. The conclusions are as follows:
1. High formalization of management control systems help for the need of information of deliberate
strategy formulation.
2. The degree of participation and communication of interactive control systems in large companies are higher, while those of interactive control systems in small companies are lower.
3. No matter what the size of an organization is, the initial stages of strategic activities are shaped by management control systems.
4. No matter what the size of an organization is, boundary systems do not serve as a
strategy filter.
5. The top management of interviewer companies tends to not realize that employees may make up the key performance indicator (KPI) due to the changes in the priority of KPI for responding to strategic uncertainties.
6. No matter what the size of an organization is, complete management control systems will help for higher performance in organization.

▼ An increased openness and rapidity of the media has resulted in more comprehensive coverage of organizations and their behavior. Additionally increased customer awareness of corporate ethical behavior has led to higher customer demands and expectations resulting in added pressure on companies. Corporate social responsibility has by researchers been identified as the solution to these increased expectations. There are various types of CSR activities and this study focuses on the concept of Fair Trade. A literature review examining the existing research within the field was performed to identify a research gap that assisted in establishing the purpose of the study. The purpose of this study is to assess how practicing CSR strategies at Coop influence subjective performance, and if these are deliberate or emergent. Three research questions were formulated to answer the purpose. The study tests a research model that has not yet been tested in practice, namely the 3C-SR model. The study has been conducted through a case study in the form of in-depth interviews and content analysis. The study was carried out through five interviews with employees from the Swedish grocery chain Coop. Organization-wide needs for well-developed communication, consistency and clear goals regarding CSR and Fair Trade were recognized. Practical managerial implications have been concluded based on these findings. Additionally, a suggestion for developing the existing research model is presented. The study reveals that Fair Trade is not practiced entirely in accordance with the 3C-SR model. Potentiality was identified concerning the subjective assessment, hence the subjective performance was not ultimate. The study further concluded that despite deliberate features, the corporate strategy was highly emergent.

▼ Increasingly, researchers on strategy are turning away from the highly abstracted and de-humanized components that seem to typify the macro approach to strategy. This movement is at least partially brought about by a philosophical recognition that the emergent and unpredictable nature of organizational life is fast exposing the constraints of an approach to strategy that is based on the values of rationality, predictability and control. In this thesis I argue that organizational change in general and the act of strategizing in particular can be thought of as a social, transformative and emergent process as opposed to the overly orderly, rational, formative and/or humanistic views on strategy presented by systemically oriented theorists. I draw on the theory of complex responsive processes of relating as espoused by Stacey, Griffin and Shaw (2000) and specifically on Stacey’s (2003, 2007) substantial contribution to the field of strategic management. By utilizing a reflexive research methodology I describe the arduous social and emergent process of transformation in my practice and identity (observable in subtle changes in disposition, language and assumptions) as I begin to act into the understanding of strategizing as an ongoing, incomplete, social process. In doing this, I am suggesting that the narrated accounts of our shifts in practice due to us knowing differently are important contributions in the process of transforming our theories on and beliefs around strategy. These accounts should not be seen as premature attempts at methodological frameworks, but rather as explorative participation in the emergent transformation of a radical, social approach to strategizing. I engage critically with the notion of strategy-as-practice and suggest a review of the fundamentally rational and formative assumptions still prevalent in the work of researchers like Johnson, Melin and Whittington (2003) and Samra- Fredericks (2003). Whilst acknowledging the role of culturally mediated dispositions in the ongoing transformation of organizations advocated by Chia and Holt (2006) and Chia and MacKay (2007), I argue for the paradoxical and therefore simultaneous occurrence of habitual and mindful actions by people strategizing as opposed to the authors’ suggestion of a predominantly mindless experience of organizational change. Finally, I turn to Stacey’s (2007) question as to why people continue to make long-term forecasts if their usefulness is so obviously limited. Whilst understanding his frustration, I argue that there is value nevertheless in engaging in strategy making albeit not for the rationalist reasons usually stated. In my view the real value of strategising is to be found in two areas: first in the social activity that goes into creating these documents, and second: the documents not only serve as markers in an ongoing process of strategising; they also give us a way of ‘going on’ and taking the next step.

▼ The key mission of a defence force is the ability to
execute successful operations. If it is unable to do this, it is
only a liability to the nation, and its right to exist ceases. The
White Paper on defence requires the South African National Defence
Force (SANDF) to be an affordable, small and technologically
advanced force. The engineering technical family (ETF) is an
integral part of this organisation and must contribute to its
success. This study investigates how the ETF can enable the SANDF
to be both successful and meet the requirements of the White Paper
on defence. The success factors of a defence force are assumed to
be based on the thirteen principles of war defined for the SANDF.
This study proposes the ETF's contributions to the principles of
war to increase the success of operations. The profiles of
artisans, technicians, technologists and engineers, which are
members of the ETF, are defined in terms of their technical and
concomitant competences. This determines their roles. The ETF's
competences are mapped to the requirements of the weapon systems
during their life-cycle phases. This finding determines the mix of
the ETF required over a typical weapon system's life. The
strategy
for aligning the ETF effort with the SANDF's core business is then
developed. The ETF is divided into the technical services who
ensure the readiness of weapon systems for the war-fighters, and
the engineering services that change the baselines of the weapons
systems to meet the changing demands of the the environment.

▼ This thesis presents a conceptual analysis of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) from a change management perspective. The conceptual analysis identifies three principal change management models that have implicitly underpinned the operation of the BCA: logical incrementalism, emergent strategy and co-participative change management. It notes a shift of emphasis in the BCA as it has sought to change from an essentially reactive prescriptive code to one that embraces greater flexibility and proactivity.
In order to identify the operational strengths and weaknesses of each of the change management frameworks that underpin the BCA in coping with the more rapid social and technological change that is characteristic of 21st century Australia, each framework was compared in terms of its ability to enable a proactive response to the prevailing BCA hazard identification and risk management requirements.
Whilst this analysis showed that the BCA is continuing to provide a generally acceptable built environment it nonetheless identified that the management of change and risk by the BCA is not sufficiently flexible to proactively identify and respond to emerging demographic needs and demands. These weaknesses are particularly evident in situations where building occupants lack the capacity or capability to adapt their behaviour to overcome the restrictions of a BCA compliant built environment in order to satisfy their needs and goals. This condition is known as environmental docility (Lawton, 1974).
The limited ability of the BCA highlighted by this analysis pointed to a need to add to the BCA’s underlying conceptual frameworks. Drawing together McLain and Lee’s Adaptive Management Theory (McLain & Lee, 1996), Tolbert & Zucker’s Radical Innovation Management Theory (Tolbert & Zucker, 1966) and Cohen and his colleagues’ work on assessing building performance (Cohen et. al., 2001) a conceptual framework better suited to contemporary needs was proposed. It seeks to provide a
conceptual framework for the BCA that enables proactive response to change that draws on past evidence based knowledge and build new knowledge into this evidence base to inform the continuous improvement of the BCA and its application.
The thesis proposes practical addition to improve the ability of the BCA to manage more rapid change. This framework is described as an Adaptive and Reflexive Governance Pathway (ARGP). The ARGP seeks to provide a practical theory based approach that supports experimentation and learning as well as active citizen and stakeholder engagement in policy making and implementation whilst maintaining the strengths of building regulation secured by building codes such as the BCA.
To test the utility of the AGRP ARGP as an additional methodology to improve the operation of the BCA the thesis reports two proof of concept case studies.
The first study considered sleep quality in irregular hour sleepers as an example of a group subject to a type of environmental docility that to date is not recognised by the BCA. The discovery stage of…

The evolution of the ways of thinking strategy development carne along with the changes in the environment, organizations and individuais. ln each decade, the dominant themes ab'out Strategy changed, allowing the incorporation of different ways of thinking into the resolution of strategic nature problems.
Strategy is a process, and it can only be managed, if it is understood by Organizations managers. The understanding of the various perspectives about what is or should be the Strategy enables to minimize the difficulty in strategic management. ln this sense, it is presented a suggestion for the concept of Strategic Thought, as an ability of thinking how Analysis, Experience and Creativity influence strategy development.
By deduction, it's possible to resume the different ways of thinking, in three lenses of Strategy (Analysis, Experience and Creativity), which aren't prescriptions of the best way to perform, but concepts based in theories that…

▼ First, this study sought to generate and critically analyze a concise, systematic and rigorous multi-method approach to future-oriented competency modeling. The next phase involved using this hybrid methodology to develop a model that will profile exemplary business market managers using a prospective naturalistic inquiry methodology. This research was conducted using a modified Delphi technique where the initial Delphic instrument was created using a literature review, interviews and expert review panels.
Agreement within the groups was measured for each competency in order to assess levels of consensus, differences within the groups were measured to identify controversial competencies and inter-rater reliability was measured to assess the consistency of the ratings. Competencies were clustered in order of importance and a competency “kernel” was identified. The Delphi panelists were selected using a purposive non-probabilistic dual-stage stratified sampling technique mixed with a snowball approach. The subjects represented three continents and a wide range of expertise.
The design of the competency model entailed three main steps: construction, de-construction and reconstruction. In the construction phase, 153 competencies were identified, arranged into 17 functional clusters and rated. Using the quantitative data, the model was deconstructed and its various parts examined. It was later reconstructed based on the results of the analysis. Since a large number of competencies were identified, the data were analyzed and broken down into a series of “perspectives” with more manageable “chunks” of data.
In an attempt to provide a more holistic view of the data, an
emergent model based on the six strata of the 102 “core” competencies was synthesized. Two additional expositions were offered: (1) in the second adaptation of the model, the 102 core competencies were broken down and reanalyzed to synthesize the “
Emergent Functional Model” (EFM). The third synthesis of the model, the “
Emergent Systems Model” (ESM) was exploratory and sought to depict the interdependencies and relationships that exist between the core competencies. This holistic perspective of the business-to-business market management competencies was built based on concepts borrowed from systems theory and cybernetics (first and second order). The EFM and the ESM blur the line between individual and organizational competencies.
