As the world enters the new millennium, we are experiencing one of the most important changes since the industrial revolution - the move to an Internet-based society. Traditional business channels are moving to a new platform of interaction that is called Electronic Business (EB). Electronic Business is becoming a significant business tool, provided that businesses understand the benefits, the application areas and impacts of EB, and can apply these concepts optimally. The problem with many businesses, especially SMMEs (Small Medium and Micro Enterprises), is that they are ignorant to many EB-related concepts, how EB can assist their business needs, and how to apply EB into their business components. Various solutions for EB exist in the industry, which are very comprehensive and complex. However, with the constant wave of mergers, acquisitions and new IT-companies forming, as well as the myriad of new solutions being developed, many businesses are not sure which solution would suit their business best, and which solution provider would be the best to approach. What businesses need is an understanding of EB and guidelines on how to start becoming EB focused. The principle aim of the Enterprise-Wide Electronic Business (EWEB) Framework developed is to form the bridge between a traditional business and an electronic business. This is achieved by defining many EB-related concepts and providing guidelines on how to streamline business processes with technology in moving to an EB platform. The EWEB Framework targets this from three perspectives. Firstly, the EWEB Framework follows a top-down approach to EB, targeting business processes across the enterprise as well as business issues from strategic, architectural and infrastructural levels. This allows EWEB to be applicable to all types of business processes and businesses needs. Secondly, the EWEB Framework also consists of business processes that are common across all industries. ▼ This thesis will examine electronic (debit and credit) card transactions in New Zealand, utilising the Electronic Card Transactions (ECT) statistics from Statistics New Zealand. The aim of this thesis is to test the Statistics New Zealand claim that the ECT variables can be used as an indicator for the change in the level of consumption expenditure and of economic activity in general. This will be done via business cycle analysis and through a forecasting exercise. The ECT series are only available from the fourth quarter of 2002, so the sample size utilised in the analysis is small. Cyclical information is extracted from the original series using univariate business cycle filters, due to the small sample size considered. These are then compared to the cyclical components of GDP, consumption expenditure and its components and measures of economic activity from the labour market (unemployment rate, weekly hours worked). Results show that the cyclical components of the ECT series are highly associated with cyclical movements in both GDP and consumption (and its components). Their association with the labour market variables is slightly weaker. Differences in the timing of the cyclical co-movements are also found between the debit and credit card series. The forecasting exercise tests the ability of the ECT series to improve short term economic forecasts. The results from the bivariate forecasting exercise indicate that the ECT series may be useful for improving forecasts, particularly for consumption spending. When an ECT variable is included in a more realistic forecasting model for consumption expenditure, the performance of the model is improved dramatically, relative to the case when the ECT variable is excluded. The two sets of results provide some evidence in support of the Statistics New Zealand claim and suggest that policymakers and economic forecasters should consider how to include the ECT series into their forecasting models. ▼ Electronic Business (e-Business) is recognised as being able to help organisations in the construction industry to achieve competitiveness and substantial benefits. However, the uptake of e-business in the construction industry has been relatively limited and ineffective. Previous research covers the body of knowledge about how to identify the value of e-business once it has been created or how to identify the capabilities that can create value. There is no guidance available to help organisations to maximise their leverage by investing intelligently and matching the size of their demand for e-business solutions to the size of the market they plan to supply. This research aims to identify the strategic e-business needs and requirements of organisations in the construction industry; it helps them to scan or position their current situation, and provide a holistic approach to assist them in developing an executable e-business strategy. In order to achieve the aim and the formulated objectives, a multi-methodological research design and a pragmatic mixed-methods approach, involving a combination of both quantitative and qualitative datasets, were adopted to investigate the e-business practices of organisations in the industry. These include an exploratory investigation (an industry survey with 250 industry organisations), and an explanatory investigation (four case studies with specific industry end-user companies). The collected data was analysed and problems were identified; the elements for a holistic approach to manage e-business implementation emerged. Subsequently, a Strategic e-Business Framework was developed to provide a holistic approach for organisations in the construction industry to plan, execute and review their e-business strategies. The Framework enables organisations to consider the medium term (three to five years), long-term (over five to ten years), and emergent needs to derive business value. The key features of the Framework include six phases and phase gates, five functional factors, and 23 activities. The six phases include Analyse Situation, Establish Vision, Define Critical Success Factors (CSFs), Develop Action Plan, Implement Action Plan, and Review Strategy. The phases were defined to guide the IT leaders in carrying out consistent e-business planning. The outputs of each phase (phase gates) were defined to assist IT leaders in the review of procedures during their e-business implementation. The functional factors include management, people, process, technology and external environment. The factors were identified to address every facet of an organisation, and obtain collaboration efforts from both internal and external. They also ensure organisations have the opportunities to improve capabilities in these areas, and make them ready for immediate e-business implementation. ▼ SMEs are slow adopters of new technologies and understandably so because they are entangled in a vicious cycle of poverty. It is even more so for SMEs located in developing markets such as the sub-Saharan Africa. SMEs in these areas are faced with several difficult institutional and cultural bottlenecks which often impede their access to and use of new technologies. In Nigeria, the recently introduced cashless policy is one of many strategies intended to enhance SMEs' chances in the global e-commerce market as much as the general Nigerian economy. Studies reveal that Nigerian SMEs are slow to adopt and use this new technological innovation called the e-payment system (EPS) even when it can improve their chances to participate successfully in e-commerce. However, there is little in the literature to understand why and what is needed to be done to encourage and facilitate their participation in adopting and using this technology. This area of study has not been sufficiently explored. Thus, this thesis fills the void and explores the factors influencing EPS adoption and extent of use by SMEs in Nigeria. The study develops an integrated model drawing from the Technology-Organisation- Environment (TOE) framework and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) model. We employed the mixed methods. 239 respondents were served the questionnaire. Also, 4 SMEs and two stakeholders were interviewed as a follow-up to the statistical analysis. We employed the Logistic regression analysis in addition to the personal interviews analysis. The results revealed that technological, environmental and owner/manager's factors majorly influenced the adoption of EPS among SMEs in Nigeria. The study finds that perceived benefit is the single major factor positively influencing the decision to adopt and use EPS in Nigeria. Others are owner/manager's educational level and knowledge in IT. The study also finds that perceived complexity, perceived insecurity and lack of government policy are major barriers to the adoption of EPS. Age, perceived benefits, and perceived trust facilitated frequent EPS usage while age, perceived complexity and competitive pressure positively influenced the number and type of EPS channels used by SMEs in Nigeria.

The purpose of this research was to determine the status of e-readiness of Small and Medium-Sized enterprises (SMEs) in the ICT sector in Botswana with respect to information access using ICTs for competitiveness in the local and international markets. The population of study consisted of key informants from 114 SMEs in the ICT sector in Gaborone and Francistown, the capital city and the second largest city of Botswana respectively. The official list of ICT companies provided by the government of Botswana was used as the sampling frame. The research used a two-phase design - the preliminary survey and the main survey of the project. The preliminary survey consisted of two stages. During the first stage, a short structured questionnaire was administered to a census of 114 key informants from SMEs in the ICT sector. During the second stage, six focus group discussions were used to collect data from key stakeholders in the ICT sector who included representatives from: ICT companies, ICT professional body in Botswana, government utility corporations, academia and the business community. The participants in the focus group discussions involved representatives from 55 SMEs who were identified like in the first stage using the government official list of SMEs in Botswana. The quantitative data collected through questionnaire were analysed using SPSS while the qualitative data collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were analysed using thematic tables. The results were represented using tables, pie charts, categories and narrations. The results of the preliminary survey of the project were used to characterise the ICT sector in terms of its size, key players, nature of businesses, products and services traded in, distribution of business by location and the issues that affected the sector. This characterisation was important in two main respects. Firstly, it provided a clear roadmap for the design of the main survey of the research since little information existed on the subject of e-readiness on Botswana in general and with respect to SMEs in particular. Similarly, the government had invested a lot of resources in ICT infrastructure development and was focusing on SMEs especially those in the ICT sector to diversify the economy from the dominant diamond mining to service industry. Secondly, the results of the preliminary survey of the project supported the development of a structured interview schedule that was used during the main survey of the project. During the main survey of the research data was collected from companies that participated in the focus group discussions. From the focus group list of participants, an alphabetical name list of 55 SMEs was created. Das Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit war es, die Zusammenhänge zwischen der elektronischen Musikszene und Social Web zu erläutern und die User-Motive von Akteuren der elektronischen Musikszene im Social Web zu erforschen. Dazu wurden zwei zugrundeliegende Forschungsfragen formuliert: Inwieweit haben und hatten Social Web-Faktoren Einfluss auf die elektronische Musikszene? Welche User-Motive verfolgen die Akteure der elektronischen Musikszene im Social Web? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen wurden zunächst alle Grundlegenden Begriffe zum Thema geklärt und anschließend ein Leitfaden für Interviews mit Akteuren aus der elektronischen Musikszene verfasst und angewandt. Die Auswertung der Interviews brachte einige interessante Erkenntnisse. Zahlreiche durch Electronic Business induzierte Veränderungen im wirtschaftlichen Umfeld der Musikbranche hatten starke Einflüsse auf die elektronische Musikszene. Die Wertschöpfungskette hat sich in der Szene stark verkürzt und oft verschmelzen mehrere Wertschöpfungsstufen in einer Person. Auch entwickeln sich viele Konsumenten entlang der Wertschöpfungskette hin bis zu Produzenten und weiter. Social Web hat in der elektronischen Musikszene die Kommunikation, Kollaboration, Promotion und Distribution stark beeinflusst und wirkte für einige Subgenres als Nährboden bzw. Wachstumsbeschleuniger.

The aim of this diploma thesis was to describe the connection of the electronic music scene and social web and to look into the user behaviour of the players in the electronic music scene. Therefore the two underlying research questions were raised: To what extent is and has social web been significant in the electronic music scene? What user behaviour do the players in the electronic music scene exhibit when using social web? In order to answer those two questions the author explained all definitions important to the research subject. After that an outline of questions for several guided interviews with players of the scene was composed and applied. The interviews brought some interesting insights. Numerous electronic business-induced changes in the economic environment of the music industry had significant influence on the electronic music scene. The value chain has shortened in the scene and in many cases several value chain levels are being united within a single person. In addition many consumers develop along the value chain to the point of a producer or even higher. Social Web has highly changed the way players communicate, produce, collaborate, promote and distribute in the electronic music scene and functioned as a developmental boost for several sub-genres.

Most efficient internet advertisement of electronic jewellery shop is researched in the final master thesis. The first chapter describes the history of internet advertisement, links to marketing, internet advertisement objectives, functions, communications and consumer segmentation. The second section is further explored in the form of internet advertisement and application features. The third chapter provides an overview and analysis of internet advertisement research in the world and Lithuania, works of authorship sales online surveys and overview most attractive web sites. The fourth chapter describes and analyzes the completed questionnaire on the experience of buying online shop, buy or present jewelry and most attractive ways of internet advertising techniques. After exploring online advertising methods, distribution and access are presented conclusions and suggestions.

Magistriniame darbe buvo įvertinti elektroninio verslo ir bevielio ryšio technologijų taikymo aspektai, atliktas elektroninio verslo paslaugų plėtros galimybių panaudojant bevieles technologijas tyrimas. Darbe pateikiama susisteminta bevielio ryšio technologijų ir paslaugų kaip mokslo problemos analizė, įvertinamos Lietuvoje veikiančios technologijos, paslaugos ir sprendimų sistemos, kurioms įgyvendinti panaudojamos bevielės technologijos. Pirmoje magistrinio darbo dalyje buvo išanalizuotos bevielės technologijos, taikomos elektroninio verslo ir mobilaus verslo organizavimui. Antroje magistrinio darbo dalyje buvo išanalizuotos bevielio ryšio technologijų taikymo galimybės elektroninio verslo ir elektroninio verslo paslaugų srityse. Trečioje magistrinio darbo dalyje buvo išplėstos elektroninio verslo paslaugų teikimo modelio komponentės, taikant bevielio ryšio technologijas. Ketvirtoje dalyje buvo atliktas eksperimentinis tyrimas, kuris leido įvertinti elektroninio verslo plėtros galimybes panaudojant bevieles technologijas Lietuvoje.

In this master work the aspects of application of electronic business and wireless communication technologies were evaluated, the research of electronic business services’ development, while using wireless technologies, was completed. In the work systemized analysis of wireless connection technologies and services is provided as analysis of scientific problem; technologies, existing in Lithuania, services and solution systems, the implementation of which uses wireless technologies, are also evaluated. . In the first part of this work wireless technologies applied in organization of electronic business and mobile business were analyzed. The second part of master work analyzes the possibilities of wireless communication technologies’ application in the field of electronic business and services of electronic business. In the third part of master work the components of model of e. business’ service provision were enlarged by applying wireless communication technologies. The fourth part presents experimental research, which allowed evaluating the possibilities of electronic business development by using wireless technologies in Lithuania.

Este trabalho teve como objecto a análise da situação do Negócio Electrónico no mundo e especificamente em Portugal, para em seguida desenvolver um plano de negócio que incorpore os learningse best practicesde algumas das empresas bem sucedidas nesta área. A opção pelo desenvolvimento de um plano de negócio, numa tese de mestrado, teve como objectivo melhorar os conhecimentos do autor na área do Negócio Electrónico, mas sobretudo discipliná-lo na transformação de uma ideia vagamente definida, numa solução concreta de negócio, seguindo as etapas e metodologias de análise necessárias para a sua construção e avaliação. Neste sentido, o autor desenvolveu um plano de negócio para uma plataforma do tipo e-marketplace, que tem algumas características de um modelo de e-procurement, que facilita o encontro e o negócio entre compradores e fornecedores de um vasto leque de serviços, e tem por base um modelo de negócio não dependente das tradicionais receitas de publicidade, mas sim de comissões e feessustentados pela proposta de valor proporcionada aparceiros e clientes.

The object of this project was the analysis of the current status of electronic business in Portugal and in the world, to build a business planthat incorporates the learnings and best practices of some of the most successful companies in this field. The option of developing a business plan, in a MSc project had the objective to allow the author to improve his know-how in the electronic business area, more specifically to push him to convert a vague idea into a specific business solution, following the necessary analysis and methodology steps, to build and evaluate it. In this context, the author developed a business plan for an e-marketplace with some features of an e-procurement model, which facilitates buyers and providers of a wide range of services to meet and do business. This business model is not based on the traditional advertising revenue stream, but on commissions and fees sustained by the value provided to partners and clients.

▼ The Adoption of E-commerce in SMEs: An Empirical Investigation in Egypt It is recognised widely that e-commerce can offer substantial opportunities for Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to compete in the global market. In developing countries, e-commerce opportunities can be a meaningful approach for SMEs to be able to compete with large businesses and to access, with lowest possible costs, international markets. However, the current situation shows that SMEs continue to lag behind in maximising their capabilities in taking these chances. Universally, they are reported to be slow adopters of new technologies as a result of limited financial resources and lack of expertise. The importance, of SMEs, emerged from their positions since they contributed more than 90% to many developed or developing countries’ economies and they were considered to be the backbone of any economy. Hence, the main purpose, of conducting this research, was to increase the body of knowledge about the process of the adoption of e-commerce. This was done by a primary empirical focus on small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt. SMEs represented about 90% of all Egyptian businesses (ITP, 2012). This study aimed to investigate the factors which could influence the SMEs’ adoption of e-commerce. In order to accomplish this objective, the researcher investigated the previous studies, on the same approach, in order to identify the gap, within the literature, regarding the adoption of e-commerce amongst SMEs. Additionally, the researcher integrated existing theories on the adoption of innovation in order to develop a conceptual framework for the determinants of the adoption of e-commerce in the SMEs sector. The researcher reviewed the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI); Resource Based View of the Firm (RBV); Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) Model; and Technology Acceptance Models (TAM) to give constructive information about the firm and decision makers, within the firm, who were believed to have an impact on the adoption of innovation. 3 The proposed model was tested using quantitative research data. The data was collected by means of an online questionnaire survey and, subsequently, due to the high rate of non-respondents, changed to a face-to-face survey. A total of 130 usable responses were generated for purpose of analysis. The study contributed to the existing research by providing valuable information about the factors which influenced the SMEs’ adoption of e-commerce. As the results showed, there were 6 groups of factors which impacted mainly on the adoption processes. ▼ Supply chains encompass all of the diverse activities that are associated with the flow and transformation of goods, right from the beginning stage of the raw materials, all the way through to the consumer. Supply chains are broken into three distinct parts, namely upstream activities involving the material and service inputs from suppliers, internal activities involving the manufacture and packaging of the goods, and downstream activities, which involve the distribution and sale of the goods. Since the inception of the automotive industry, buyers and suppliers have been linked in rigid, inflexible relationships. With the advent of the Internet, however, supply chains are becoming less rigid and more efficient. E-enabling an automotive supply chain involves two distinct spheres of interest, namely, the sphere of automotive supply chains and that of e-business. Both spheres are evolving fast and becoming increasingly complex. Due to the increasing complexity, there is a lack of understanding with regard to incorporating e-business principles effectively into automotive supply chains. In order to address this lack of understanding, the dissertation proposes a conceptual framework that can be used to assist in the process of e-enabling an automotive supply chain. Before the dissertation ventures to propose this conceptual framework, a number of challenges that may be encountered when attempting to enable an automotive supply chain are highlighted. The proposed framework, therefore, specifically aims to position activities conceptually in such a way that it can be argued that the identified challenges are considered at the appropriate time in the e-enabling process. The framework therefore, focuses on the entire process, starting at the planning phase and going right through to the implementation phase. As such, the framework consists of various phases, with each phase containing a myriad of activities. The different phases of the framework include developing a strategic business plan, designing an information technology architecture, identifying system and resource requirements, creating a project plan and finally implementing the project. These phases aim to address the entire e-enabling process. The contribution that this dissertation makes is in the form of a conceptual framework which may be followed during the e-enabling process. The framework aims to provide direction and to ensure that the many activities that are involved in the e-enabling process are considered. The dissertation also highlights the many challenges that may be encountered when enabling a supply chain. Lastly a prototype application has been developed using a new Internet technology. The prototype has been developed in order to ascertain the new technologies suitability to the e-enabled supply chain environment.

▼ This paper reports the results of a study investigating the effects of PCAOB inspection (Inspection) and internal quality review (IQR) salience on auditors' audit planning and reporting decisions. To investigate these judgments, 48 auditors participated in a 1 x 3 between-subjects experiment in which the salience of a post-audit review is manipulated as Inspection salient, IQR salient, or no post-audit review is salient. Manipulating post-audit reviews salience is justified using the results of Stefaniak and Houston (2009), which suggest 63 (62) percent of their audit partners can or try to anticipate the engagements that will be selected for IQR (Inspection). Using the Houston, Peters, & Pratt (2005) model, I predict that auditors will assess higher audit fees in conditions where a post-audit review is salient. Using extant accounting research on the influence of accountability (DeZoort, Harrison, & Taylor, 2006) and sanctions (Shafer, Morris, & Ketchand, 1999), I also predict that auditors will make more conservative judgments in conditions where a post-audit review is salient. While I do not find auditors were more conservative in their judgments, I do find that post-audit review salience significantly increases audit fees. Furthermore, post-audit review salience significantly increased perceived litigation risk, overall client riskiness, substantive testing efforts, and budgeted hours, as well as significantly decreased the perceived financial condition of the client. This study is important for several reasons. First, it provides initial evidence as to the impacts of IQRs on auditor planning decisions, a quality review mechanism thus far not considered in the accounting literature. Second, it provides initial evidence and understanding of whether, and how, auditors pass post-audit review costs along to their clients. ▼ The future employment market will require college graduates to possess strong and effective leadership skills. It is crucial that higher education provide numerous and practical opportunities for students to develop these skills. Research confirms that preparing students for leadership roles is one of the founding tenets of American higher education. However, studies regarding leadership and the nontraditional student have not been well documented. The conceptual framework for this research was based on the ecology theory of leadership that proposed a departure from the traditional hierarchical style of leadership towards a more systemic style through an open process that involves all members of the organization. Athens State University serves a population comprised mostly of nontraditional students, many of whom are already employed. This study used the Leadership Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (LABS-III) instrument developed by Dr. Richard Wielkiewicz to examine the preferred leadership styles of students at Athens State University and determine if there was a significant difference in those styles based upon a set of demographic variables that included gender, age group, employment status, and college of record. Results revealed that an overwhelming number of students still preferred the traditional hierarchical style of leadership, while a much smaller group preferred the systemic style of leadership. Statistical results revealed no significant differences in preferred leadership styles based upon any of the demographic variables. However, research did show that the older the study participant, the more likely they were to prefer the hierarchical style of leadership. Based upon the results of this study, it is apparent that institutions of higher education many want to consider redesigning the leadership development curriculum with an emphasis on building systemic leadership skills, specifically through the ecology of leadership theory. In addition, specific and meaningful learning opportunities in leadership should be incorporated into all curricula, not just business programs. As the population of nontraditional students continues to outnumber traditional college students, institutions may want to consider establishing an official point of contact for this student, such as an Office of Student Support Services for Returning Adult Students. ▼ This dissertation investigates the role of institutional investors in capital market tax studies. Specifically, this studies examines how institutional investors influence firms' cost of capital and financing decisions following changes in personal tax rates on debt and equity income. The dissertation is organized into three essays that examine these topics. The first two essays examine tax rate changes in 1997 and 2003 that reduced the personal tax rates on interest, capital gains and dividends. Essay 3 summarizes relevant literature involving institutional investors and capital market tax studies. Essay 1 investigates whether differences between the tax liabilities of the underlying shareholders of institutional investors affect firms' capital structures and decisions to issue debt versus equity following changes in tax rates on investment income received by individuals. The study predicts that firms with high concentrations of tax disadvantaged institutional investors (institutions whose underlying shareholders are taxable) will issue more equity relative to debt than those with high concentrations of tax-advantaged institutional investors (institutions whose underlying shareholders are not taxable). The results find that the financing decisions of firms with high levels of tax-disadvantaged institutional investors are influenced by changes in individual tax rates. Essay 2 investigates whether differences in the tax attributes of the underlying shareholders of institutional investors influences the impact of equity tax rate changes on a firm's cost of equity. The study examines a sample period of two years (eight quarters) around the enactment of the 1997 and 2003 Acts. The study finds that firms with high levels of tax-disadvantaged ownership experienced a decrease in their cost of equity capital following a decrease in the individual tax rate on capital gains. In addition, the interaction of the institutional investor dummy variable and a dummy variable indicating the observation is after the 2003 Act indicates that the cost of equity capital for firms with high levels of tax-disadvantaged ownership decreased following the 2003 Act. The results of Essays 1 and 2 provide evidence that institutional investors are not homogeneous with respect to their influence on firms' cost of capital and financing decisions following changes in individual tax rates.
