▼ This thesis focuses on experimental investigations of transport in two dimensional electron gases (2DEG) driven out of equilibrium by microwaves and dc current. Part I presents the background information in four sections that describe the basics of magneto transport, Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (SdHO), microwave-induced resistance oscillations (MIRO), and Hall field-induced resistance oscillations (HIRO). The second part of this thesis is broken into three sections that each discuss experimental findings of MIRO and HIRO in various 2DEGs. The fifth section discusses the observation of MIRO and HIRO in p-type Germanium quantum wells. This is significant because previous studies into a variety of different materials never showed any MIRO response. P-type Germanium is the second material for which MIRO and HIRO have been observed, making MIRO and HIRO not unique to GaAs quantum wells. The sixth section looks into the role of introducing alloy disorder into the quantum well on MIRO and HIRO. The quantum scattering rate was found to increase with the amount of alloy disorder and the MIRO prefactor that is decided by scattering times was not found to have a measurable change with increasing alloy disorder concentration. It was found the amplitude of HIRO is controlled by sharp disorder scattering contribution in mobility. The seventh section provides a systematic study into the effects of density on MIRO, which is not well understood. The analysis focuses on when one energy sub-band is populated, but also gives some observations of when two sub-bands are populated. When one sub-band is populated, increasing density was found to suppress the effective mass extracted from MIRO. The change in MIRO amplitude was found to be described by a combination of the zero-field resistance and the increase of quantum lifetime as density increased. When the second sub-band was populated, MIRO was found to be highly suppressed and this suppression cannot be explained by the MIRO mechanisms, quantum lifetime, or MIRO’s power factor.

▼ The research objective of this thesis is to develop a method to measure the capability-based connectivity robustness of a Collaborative Information Network (CIN) against link failures by using existing topological connectivity robustness measures. A capability-based network modeling process was developed to transform the problem of measuring capability-based connectivity robustness into the problem of measuring the (structural) connectivity robustness between several critical node pairs. The connectivity robustness of a node pair can be directly quantified by the average number of link failures until its disconnection happens, which can be estimated using the effective resistance between the node pair. The estimation method proposed is fast and scalable. The estimation error stabilizes as network node number increases. Centrality analyses for both existing and non-existing network entities were performed in terms of their importance to the capability-based connectivity robustness of a CIN. The proposed centrality measures of network entities are based on the Moore-Penrose Pseudoinverse of a network Laplacian, which was also used to calculate the effective resistance value between a node pair. In addition, a framework for the fast evaluation of the capability-based connectivity robustness of a CIN was constructed and demonstrated, followed by an alternative topology design generation process. Assigning substitution nodes, which is a dynamic link failure copying mechanism, can help strengthen connectivity. In this thesis, it was also demonstrated how the proposed evaluation framework can be used to quantify the effects of having substitution nodes on the capability-based connectivity robustness of a CIN. Finally, the effects of the capability-based connectivity robustness of a CIN on the required information processing capacity of each network node were also explored. ▼ Dykstra Naval Architects are regularly designing large classic sailing yachts or motor-sailors, of which the draft is an important design restriction.The sailing performance is increased by adding lift-generating appendages,without increasing the draft. An example is a retractable centre board, havinga big influence on the sailing properties. Predicting the performance of the centre board contribution in a hull-keel-centre board configuration is the subject of this research. When predicting the performance of large sailing yachts, Dykstra wants to keep the ability to superpose an appendage to the data of a hull-keel configuration obtained from towing tank experiments or CFD simulations. This means that a method must be developed to estimate the contribution of the centre board, in terms of side force, resistance and centre of effort. Both towing tank experiments and CFD simulations are conducted for this research. The Maltese Falcon is used as the 'case ship'. A towing tank model of the Maltese Falcon was already made and tested at the TU delft in 2002. This model is again subjected to towing tank experiments, with a new keel and two new centre boards, resulting in 9 different hull-keel-centre board configurations. The main focus was on the towing tank experiments, executed in the Delft Hydromechanics Laboratory. CFD simulations were done to validate the results of the towing tank experiments and to gain visual insight in the flow around the vessel. The lift-carry-over on the keel and hull above the centre board can clearly be seen, as well as the influence of the centre board on the circulation in the flow around the underwater body of the yacht. After post-processing all experimental data, the results of the towing tank experiments are used to develop formulations to predict the performance contribution of the centre board. The measured lift of the centre board contribution was roughly a factor 2 higher than the centre would generate according to Wicker & Fehlner theory. Additionally, it was found that the lift-carry-over does not only have a positive effect on the generated side force, but also on the resistance. Furthermore, it was found that heeling the Maltese Falcon model by 15 degrees, yields the same magnitude oflift-carry-over as for the upright conditions. This resulted in the conclusion that heeling the yacht has no influence on the lift-carry-over from centre board to keel-hull. The new prediction methods, derived from the towing tank experiment data, are validated on YACHT1 and Adela. These are existing yachts with hull-keel-centre board configurations, but both very different. This enabled an interesting examination on the influence of certain aspects of the configuration on the performance of the centre board contribution. All in all, it was found that the predicted centre board contribution corresponded really well to the measured data of YACHT1 and Adela. This provides enough trust to implement the new centre board performance prediction methods in the Dykstra performance prediction tool. ▼ The seemingly endless development of integrated circuits has seen a dramatic increase in the usage of electronic devices over the past few decades. It would be difficult to imagine life without devices like computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones to name a few. Yet all of these will unavoidably generate heat during operation. Removing this heat in an acceptable manner has been the subject of much research and development in order to cope with the ever increasing electronic demands. Two-phase heat transfer devices generally form part of the thermal management system for many electronic devices due to their excellent performance and passive operation. Of these two-phase heat transfer devices, the vapour chamber acts like a heat spreader which can effectively transfer heat from concentrated sources to larger sinks. The intention of this research was to perform an experimental and numerical investigation into vapour chamber heat spreaders. The experimental investigation consisted of the development of a vapour chamber with both sintered powder and mesh structures for the evaporator wick. This composite wick was designed such that the inherent strengths in each wick structure could be better utilised. An experimental setup was also developed to measure thermal performance. Through detailed measurements, spreading resistance was determined. It was found that the vapour chamber had superior performance to that of a solid copper heat spreader with reductions of up to 50% observed in spreading resistance. Further measurement of the vapour chamber temperature distribution highlighted some interesting heat transfer mechanisms that governed performance. Thereafter, a simple numerical model was introduced. It assumed that all heat transfer mechanisms were conduction based and thus the detailed aspects of two-phase heat transfer were replaced in favour of simple conduction mechanism. Through this model, which was validated against the solid copper heat spreader, the effective thermal conductivity of the vapour region was determined for a number of cases. It was found to be a function of heat source size, with reduced heat source sizes leading to reduced values for effective thermal conductivity of the vapour region. This value has been rarely explored in the literature however it provides useful information to designers of thermal systems which use vapour chambers. Some of the intricacies of this value were explored in further detail. Finally, an investigation was performed into the composite evaporator wick structure using the numerical model. This investigation helped determine practical guides for wick structures and provided suggestions for improving thermal performance of the vapour chamber. The overall research presented here will help in the continued development of the vapour chamber so that they can better achieve future demands.

▼ As new technologies continue to find their way into everyday life, the world becomes more and more connected. Airplanes and other means of transportation provide global connections in the physical world, while the omnipresence of the Internet means that information is shared around the globe, easier than ever before. But not only these man-made systems are distinctly connected, other complex systems like the human brain, or metabolic networks are successfully being studied from the perspective of their constituting connections. The combining concept in all these examples is the structure of the problem at hand: each system consists of interacting elementary components at the lowest level, from which a network structure emerges at the global level. The study of such networked systems, their observed features and the wide range of related analysis tools is commonly referred to as Network Science. In this thesis, the specific problem of how diseases spread over networks is addressed. Better understanding this spreading behavior has significant practical importance, i.e. for the prediction and control of disease prevalence, and poses many interesting theoretical challenges. In the context of modeling epidemics on networks, we formulate the Universal Mean-Field Framework. This new and theoretically well-founded framework unifies and generalizes a number of existing approximate models, and brings forth new approaches to bound the approximations. Apart from the work on epidemics, some new insights are explored in the context of the connections between electrical circuits, networks and simplices (higher-dimensional triangles). These deep theoretical equivalences allow the tools and intuitions from electrical circuits and geometry to be used in the study of networks. A comprehensive introduction and discussion of the equivalent representations and their connections is given. Additionally, we derive a new formula for the volume of a hyperacute simplex and propose to use this volume as a network-robustness measure. ▼ Measurements of in situ planetary thermal conductivity are typically made using long needle-like probes inserted in a planet's surface, which measure effective thermal conductivity (ETC) in radial direction (parallel to surface). The desired vertical (perpendicular to surface) ETC is assumed to be the same as the horizontal. However, ETC of particle beds in vertical and horizontal directions is known to be an anisotropic property under low compressive pressures. This study further examines the anisotropy of bed ETC under low and high compressive pressures in both vacuum and air environments. The ratio of vertical to horizontal stress, K0, is measured for the particles used in these experiments. A resistance network heat transfer model has been developed in predicting the vertical and the horizontal ETC as a function of applied compressive pressure. The model predicts vertical ETC by using only macro-contact thermal resistances for both high and low applied compressive pressure regimes. It is proposed that the vertical and horizontal ETC of particle beds under uniaxial compression is related by compressive pressures in each direction. The horizontal compressive pressure, which is perpendicular to the applied compressive pressure, can be calculated with the use of at-rest pressure coefficient and subsequently used in macro-contact thermal resistance to predict the horizontal ETC. The vertical ETC is obtained using the same model by substituting vertical compressive pressure into macro-contact thermal resistance. A two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model in the COMSOL Multiphysics software package has been developed to simulate heat transfer coupled with structural deformation of spheres under compressive pressures in a simple cubic (SC) packing arrangement. The numerical model is used as a tool to predict the lower limit of bed ETC as well as validating thermal contact resistance used in the theoretical model. ▼ The study set out to assess the impact of organisational restructuring (OR), the independent variable on organisational behaviour (OB), the dependent variable, in private and public sector organisations as well as state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in South Africa. OB, for the purposes of this study, consists of turnover intention, resistance to change, commitment to change and job security. It further aimed to evaluate whether the various types and magnitude of OR impact on employees in the different sectors. OR was delineated into three factors, that being Restructuring (Type), Restructuring (Leadership) and Restructuring (Frequency), before being further regressed into sub-factors, that being Restructuring (Type_Count), Restructuring (Leadership_Count) and Restructuring (Frequency_Count), for the purposes of using it as categorical variables and indexing it. The study assessed whether effective change management (ECM) mediated the relationship between OR and OB, across sectors. ECM is underpinned by effective change management processes, leader-member exchange (LMX) and perceived organisational support (POS). Finally, it aimed to assess whether employees’ psychological capital (PC), comprised of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience, moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study found that OR does, indeed, impact on the OB of employees in different sectors. It has also confirmed the mediating role of ECM and that PC moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study assessed whether effective change management (ECM) mediated the relationship between OR and OB, across sectors. ECM is underpinned by effective change management processes, leader-member exchange (LMX) and perceived organisational support (POS). Finally, it aimed to assess whether employees’ psychological capital (PC), comprised of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience, moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study found that OR does, indeed, impact on the OB of employees in different sectors. It has also confirmed the mediating role of ECM and that PC moderated the relationship between ECM and OB. The study found that the unidimensional construct, effective change management, coupled with PC, another unidimensional construct, has indeed been able attenuate the impact of OR on OB. In the case of this study, it was primarily the employees of large organisations, such as SOEs, which are affected, while employees of private and public organisations were also affected. Recommendations to organisational leaders and practitioners are provided, with the aim of assisting with the successful implementation of organisational change and restructuring initiatives, while at the same time reducing the impact thereof on the organisational behaviour of employees Advisors/Committee Members: Grobler, Anton (advisor).

Emphasis is placed on the eﬀective elastic properties as well as electrical and thermal conductivities of nanocomposites con-sisting of randomly oriented single walled carbon nanotubes in epoxy. The eﬀective elastic properties of aligned, as well as clustered and well-dispersed nanotubes in epoxy are discussed in the context of nanotube bundles using both the generalized self-consistent composite cylinders method as well as using computational microme-chanics techniques. In addition, interphase regions are introduced into the composite cylinders assemblages to account for the varying degrees of load transfer between nanotubes and the epoxy as a result of functionalization or lack thereof. Model pre-dictions for randomly oriented nanotubes both with and without interphase regions are compared to measured data from the literature with emphasis placed on assessing the bounds of the eﬀective nanocomposite properties based on the uncertainty in the model input parameters. The generalized self-consistent composite cylinders model is also applied to model the electrical and thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube-epoxy nanocomposites. Recent experimental observations of the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube polymer composites have identiﬁed extremely low percolation limits as well as a per-ceived double percolation behavior. Explanations for the extremely low percolation limit for the electrical conductivity of these nanocomposites have included both the creation of conductive networks of nanotubes within the matrix and quantum eﬀects such as electron hopping or tunneling. Measurements of the thermal conductivity have also shown a strong dependence on nanoscale eﬀects. However, in contrast, these nanoscale eﬀects strongly limit the ability of the nanotubes to increase the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite due to the formation of an interfacial thermal resistance layer between the nanotubes and the surrounding polymer. As such, emphasis is placed here on the incorporation of nanoscale eﬀects, such as elec-tron hopping and interfacial thermal resistance, into the generalized self-consistent composite cylinder micromechanics model. ▼ In this work, AC loss in superconducting composites was described using both an anisotropic continuum model and a discrete model. The efforts were concentrated in three main areas. First, the eddy current coupling loss of composites with rectangular cross section was calculated using an anisotropic continuum description based on a block model with different effective resistivities in each block. In this case, a numerical approach was used. This treatment, like the more typical lumped component network model, was able to describe many factors influencing the eddy current loss in the rectangular composites, such as twist pitch, aspect ratio, and core resistivity. However, the influence of core thickness and the presence of an outer sheath were also described with this model. Certain simplifying assumptions were used here to minimize computation time, while allowing the essential information to be extracted. In the second area, the eddy current loss of round composites were calculated from a discrete (network) point of view, and analytic expressions were developed which allow comparison to analytic expressions which were derived from effective medium theory. We need to measure only the contact resistance between the strands. The eddy current coupling loss of seven-strand MgB2 cables were then calculated by this model. With this model, it was possible to use a measured contact resistance between the strands to both predict the loss and compare to effective medium based resistivities. The results from the block model and from the analytical model give results in reasonable agreement. In the third part of the work, we attempt to compare the developed expressions to experiment. In some cases, data extant in the literature were used; in other cases, direct measurements were performed. For the rectangular geometry composites, existing data were sufficient. In the case of round composites, direct experiments were performed. The specific working medium chosen was round, seven-strand MgB2 cables. In comparing measurements to theory, it was necessary to add the hysteretic component of loss. In this case, it was also necessary to include the effect of magnetic shielding. It was shown that there are two kinds of hysteretic losses in these ferromagnetic/SC composites; the real loss and the apparent loss. Reduction of the real loss is always smaller than reduction of the apparent loss due to the shielding effect of sample signal with respect to the pick-up coil of VSM (Vibrating Sample Magnetometer). In turn, the eddy current component for round composites was controlled by the contact resistance. The contact resistance was in some cases about two orders higher than the control samples when certain insulating surface treatments were performed on the surface of the individual strands of the cable. Loss predictions form contact resistant measurements were very low. However, actual loss measurements gave losses even lower, due to a low strand permeability. ▼ The work carried out throughout the thesis focused on the behaviour of demountable composite beams in order to facilitate the integration of steel-concrete composite construction into the concept of circular economy. There are several hindrances in the way of reuse when considering traditional composite structures. One of them is the method that the current construction practice applies for connecting the concrete deck to the steel beam. The traditionally applied welded studs are advantageous in the terms of structural performance; however, they do not provide the ability of dismounting. In order to overcome this issue, different demountable shear connection types were investigated that use pretensioned bolted connections. The investigations included laboratory experiments in the means of push-out tests and full-scale beam-tests. The experiments were complemented by numerical simulations and parametric studies. The experiments showed that the developed shear connections have highly a nonlinear load-slip behaviour. When these types of connections are applied in a composite beam, the nonlinearity of the shear connection causes a nonlinear load-deflection response already in the elastic phase. Analytical equations were derived for the description of the elastic properties of composite beams with nonlinear shear connection. For the calculation of the elastic deflections an iterative procedure was developed. This method is capable of capturing the nonlinear load-deflection response. With the developed iterative method, the elastic deflections can be determined with a similar accuracy by using spreadsheet calculations as by using nonlinear finite element simulations. Due to the highly nonlinear behaviour of the tested shear connections the basic assumptions of Eurocode 4 for the determination of the plastic moment resistance of composite beams with partial shear connection are not valid anymore. The code does not enable the use of equidistant shear connector spacing and the design needs to be conducted using fully elastic analysis. This would make the use of demountable shear connections complicated and uneconomic. In the face of these issues, the probability of the practical application of demountable and reusable composite structures would be very low. On the other hand, experiments and numerical simulations show that composite beams can develop plasticity even if a non-ductile shear connection is applied. In order to overcome these issues, a new calculation method was developed for the prediction of the plastic moment resistance of demountable composite beams. A simplified method was proposed based on the developed procedure by defining an effective shear resistance for the demountable shear connections. The effective shear resistance allows the current calculation method to be extended for demountable shear connections. In this way, the benefits of composite construction can be maintained while providing the possibility of reuse. ▼ This study uses poststructuralism, Michel Foucault’s “Effective History,” and Africanist epistemology to examine ways in which scholars in k-16 schools perpetuate subjugation by using Eurocentric and other discourses. This study focuses on an interview study I conducted with three students I taught as a high school literacy educator. I use effective history to examine a racially motivated shooting event in which these one sixteen-year-old African-American male, three fifteen-year-old African-American females, and one fourteen-year-old African-American male shot at by a white security guard while attending a field trip in the southern United States. I examine reasons why these students were more afraid of revealing the fact that they were violated to their chaperones than in demanding the justice they deserved. As a participant as well as researcher, I enlist a qualitative researcher and university professor to conduct an intrasubjective interview with me. As a result of this interview, I discovered ways that my discourse as an African-American female educator reflected discourses characteristic of white supremacy. Using effective history, I examined events in the lives three of the young people involved and disclosed how their lives did not always circulate around race issues. This methodology revealed discourses participants used to resist effects of the shooting and other events in which they were raced or subjugated. Participants used Africanist, Eurocentric, and other discourses to negotiate their lives and challenges. I analyzed how discourses often oppressed them and spawned resistances or capitulation. In addition to the shooting, students experienced black-on-black violence, physical injury, abuse by collegiate athletic apparatuses, and efforts to diminish their scholarly achievements by professors. The methods of resistance they engaged in tandem demonstrated the array of discursive tools needed by young people of color in order to succeed in secondary and postsecondary institutions. It also shows how poststructuralism, particularly “effective history,” is used along with race theories, Africanist epistemology, and Eurocentric discourse for qualitative studies.

▼ An operating vehicle requires energy to oppose the subjected driving resistances. This energy is supplied via the fuel combustion in the engine. Decreasing the opposing driving resistances for an operating vehicle increases its fuel efficiency: an effect which is highly valued in today’s industry, both from an environmental and economical point of view. Therefore a lot of progress has been made during recent years in the area of fuel efficient vehicles, even though some driving resistances still rises perplexity. These resistances are the air drag F_d generated by the viscous air opposing the vehicles propulsion and the rolling resistance F_rr generated mainly by the hysteresis caused by the deformation cycle of the viscoelastic pneumatic tires. The energy losses associated with the air drag and rolling resistance account for the majority of the driving resistances facing an operating vehicle, and depends on numerous stochastic and ambient parameters, some of which are highly correlated both within and between the two resistances. To increase the understanding of the driving mechanics behind the energy losses associated with the complexity that is rolling resistance, a set of complete vehicle tests has been carried out. These tests were carried out on the test track Malmby Fairground, using a Scania CV AB developed R440 truck equipped with various sensors connected in one measurement system. Under certain conditions, these parameters can allow for an investigation of the rolling resistance, and a separation of the rolling resistance and air drag via explicit subtraction of the air drag from the measured traction force. This method is possible since the aerodynamic property A_HDVC_d(β) to some extent can be generated from wind tunnel tests and CFD simulations. Two measurement series that enable the above formulated method of separation were designed and carried out, using two separate measurement methods. One which enables the investigation of the transient nature of rolling resistance as it strives for stationarity, where the vehicle is operated under constant velocities i.e. no acceleration, and one using the well established method of coastdown, where no driving torque is applied. The drive cycles spanned a range of velocities, which allowed for dynamic and stationary analyses of both the tire temperature- and the velocity dependence of rolling resistance. When analysing the results of the transient analysis, a strong dependence upon tire temperature for given constant low velocity i.e. v ≤ 60 kmh⁻¹ was clearly visible. The indicated dependency showed that the rolling resistance decreased as the tire temperature increased over time at a given velocity, and vice versa, towards a stationary temperature and thereby rolling resistance.
