▼ ABSTRACTThe movement of liquid drops on fibers and mats commonly occurs in fabrics used in household and commercial applications. Removal of the liquid droplets from the gas/liquid and liquid/liquid streams will be of benefit for the health of the workers, safety of the environment, and protection of equipment. For example, the presence of water in diesel fuel may lead to some problems such as plugging of fuel injectors, reduce fuel flow rate, reduce fuel lubricity, and cause corrosion of engine parts. It is better to design a self-cleaning filter, which could be used to collect the liquid droplets and drain to a collecting device. This filter has advantages of reducing the cleaning cost and extending the filter life. The quality factor is used to evaluate the performance of the filter, which is related to the separation efficiency and pressure drop. The separation efficiency is strongly related to the velocity of drops on the fibers and mats. The drag coefficient correlation is used to estimate the average velocity of drop moving on the fiber/mat surfaces. In this work, the drag coefficient is correlated to Reynolds and capillary numbers from experiments and models. The flow direction is parallel the fibers and mats. In the gas-liquid experiment, the experiments are conducted for different types of fibers and different liquids. In the liquid-liquid experiment, the experiments are conducted for water drop moving on different types of mat surfaces. Also, other correlations have been derived to estimate the minimum gas/liquid flow Reynolds numbers to initiate the drop movement on fiber and mat surfaces. Finally, when the flow direction is through the filter medium (perpendicular to the fiber mat surface), another correlation is derived to estimate the minimum flow rate to move the water droplets through the pores of the mats. These correlations are unique to determine the average velocities of the liquid drops on fiber/mat surfaces. The motion of drops on fibers and woven mats are not widely discussed in literature. Very few papers have been published on the development of such correlations to estimate the drop migration on fibers/mats which makes this work unique. ▼ Differences between a modified traditional ranking-task format (MTF) and an experimental Drag-and-Drop Assisted Ranking-Task (DDART) were investigated. Completion time for each format was determined, as was format preference, the relationship between the data of the two formats, and participant strategies for completing the tasks. Participants completed: both ranking-tasks in a counterbalanced administration, a battery of demographic and preference questions, a System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire for both formats to measure usability, and a ratings questionnaire. They also developed sequences describing their decision-making during the ranking process. There was no significant difference in completion time. However, a non-significant lower average completion time for DDART suggested that, with further exposure, participants would continue to decrease completion time faster than they would using the MTF. Participants also believed that they completed DDART faster. The results of the SUS indicated DDART was not significantly more or less usable than the MTF. However, when asked to compare the “ease of use” of the two formats, participants preferred using DDART to MTF by a margin of 2 to 1. A significant relationship existed between the ranking data obtained from both formats. The ranking data for both MTF and DDART were also significantly correlated with data garnered under the ratings format. By examining the participants’ descriptions of their decision-making process, the experimenter identified four strategies participants could have used in completing either of the two formats. Task format did not influence the frequency of selection of a participant’s strategy. The more popular strategies (Level Driven and Numeric Rank Driven) were characterized by participants initially selecting a ranking (first, ninth, etc.), and then assigning an option to that ranking. Fewer participants initially selected an option and subsequently assigned a rank to that option (Similar Option Driven and Individual Option Driven). Overall, DDART was functionally comparable to MTF because there were no significant differences in completion time, the frequency of use of the strategies was similar, and the relationship between the ranking data for each format was strong. Statistically, more participants preferred DDART to MTF and believed it was easier to use and faster to complete. Advisors/Committee Members: Moroney, William F. (Committee Chair).

Utiliser une tablette ou un smartphone est désormais courant. Cependant, les effets de l'âge sur les capacités motrices nécessaires pour l'exécution des gestes d'interaction tactile n'ont pas été suffisamment pris en compte lors de la conception et de l'évaluation des systèmes interactifs, une des raisons qui a empêché l'inclusion numérique de ce groupe d'utilisateurs. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'étudier l'interaction des personnes âgées avec les écrans tactiles afin d'identifier des problèmes d'utilisabilité sur des supports variés (smartphone et tablette, doigt et stylet). Pour cette étude, nous avons conçu un système interactif constitué de jeux de type puzzle numérique tactiles, où le geste d'interaction drag-and-drop (glisser-déposer) est employé pour positionner les cibles. Dans ce contexte, une attention particulière a été portée à l'analyse des mouvements de l'utilisateur. L'analyse des postures du poignet durant l'interaction a permis d'élucider la relation entre les caractéristiques des mouvements des personnes âgées avec leurs performances, à savoir, des temps plus longs et une augmentation du nombre d'erreurs par rapport aux utilisateurs adultes plus jeunes. Prendre en compte la variabilité des capacités motrices des utilisateurs lors des phases de conception et évaluation des systèmes interactifs est nécessaire pour comprendre leurs difficultés et améliorer l'ergonomie et utilisabilité de l'interaction tactile.

Tablets and smartphones have become mainstream technologies. However, the aging effects on the motor skills implied on tactile interaction haven't been enough considered during the design and evaluation of tactile interactive systems, what prevent this group of older adult users to be digitally included successfully. This thesis aims to study the interaction of older adults with touchscreens in order to identify usability issues on different devices and input modalities (smartphone and tablet, finger and stylus). To this study, we designed an interactive system consisted of tactile puzzle games and using drag-and-drop interaction for positioning the puzzle pieces into their corresponding targets. In this framework, a special attention was given to the analysis of the movements of the user. The analysis of the postures of the users' wrists during interaction allowed to elucidate the relationship between the characteristics of the movements of older adults and their performances, particularly concerning the longer times needed for executing the gestures of interaction as well as the increased error rates of this group of users when compared to younger adults. Taking into account the variability of users' motor skills during the design and evaluation of interactive systems is necessary to better understand their difficulties as well as to improve the ergonomics and the usability levels of tactile interaction.

▼ Distributed multiparty protocols such as multicast, atomic commit, or gossip are currently underutilized, but we envision that they could be used pervasively, and that developers could work with such protocols similarly to how they work with CORBA/COM/.NET/Java objects. We have created a new programming model and a platform in which protocol instances are represented as objects of a new type called live distributed objects: strongly-typed building blocks that can be composed in a type-safe manner through a drag and drop interface. Unlike most prior object-oriented distributed protocol embeddings, our model appears to be flexible enough to accommodate most popular protocols, and to be applied uniformly to any part of a distributed system, to build not only front-end, but also back-end components, such as multicast channels, naming, or membership services. While the platform is not limited to applications based on multicast, it is replication-centric, and reliable multicast protocols are important building blocks that can be used to create a variety of scalable components, from shared documents to fault-tolerant storage or scalable role delegation. We propose a new multicast architecture compatible with the model and designed in accordance with object-oriented principles such as modularity and encapsulation. The architecture represents multicast objects as compositions of smaller objects, glued using a decentralized membership mechanism. The benefits include support for heterogeneous networks by allowing a single multicast protocol instance to simultaneously leverage different mechanisms in different parts of the Internet. Finally, we describe and evaluate a scalable reliable multicast prototype that incorporates a novel approach to scaling with the number of protocol instances by leveraging regular patterns of overlap. The system achieves exceptional performance, scalability, and stability in the presence of perturbations, in part thanks to a novel application of techniques such as priority scheduling or pull-based processing. We describe a previously unnoticed relationship between memory overheads and scheduling and the performance and scalability of a reliable multicast protocol. Our results demonstrate that to build a new global Web operating system that the live objects vision leads to, the distributed protocol and the local system architecture cannot be treated in isolation.

▼ The motions of droplets on fibers are important to many industrial applications. In particular, the movements of drops control the performance of fibrous filters. Fibrous filters are widely used in the petrochemical industries to separate aerosol droplets from air to protect the environment and worker health. The performance of a filter medium depends on factors like fiber size, droplet, face velocity, liquid properties and gas conditions. In the operation of a fibrous filter, the droplets carried by a flowing gas are captured by the filter medium due to collisions with the fibers of the medium. Liquid droplets can deform when forces are applied and, when captured on fibers, the droplets can spread over the fiber surface, coalesce into larger drops, and can migrate within the filter as drops or as a flowing film. The movements of the drops on the fibers after they are captured require study to develop theory, correlations, and data to validate models. The overall goal of this dissertation work is to develop new generalized theory for design and manufacture of gas-liquid separation media by developing correlations for gas flow conditions and movements of liquid drops in fibrous media. These relationships will enable the design and development of the next generation of fibrous filtration/separation media with superior performance.There are four experimental tasks to achieve this goal. Experiments on droplet interactions with single fibers, crossing fibers, thin and thick mats. These experiments were conducted to study the shape and migration of drops on fibers and provide fundamental understanding and insight as to how drops attach to, move on and detach from fibers. Different liquids with different drop sizes were tested that give a range of contact angles on the fibers. Different fiber materials with different fiber diameters were evaluated that give a range of surface properties. The liquids, fibers materials and sizes, and droplet sizes were selected as those currently of interest to the filter testing community. Advisors/Committee Members: Chase, George (Advisor).

▼ For drops sessile on a solid surface, cross flowing air can drive drop oscillation or shedding, based on the balance and interaction of aerodynamic drag force (based on drop size/shape and air speed) and adhesion/capillary forces (based on surface tension and drop size/shape). Better understanding of the above has applications to, e.g., fuel cell flooding, airfoil icing, and visibility in rain. To understand the basic physics, experiments studying individual sessile drops in a low speed wind tunnel were performed in this thesis. Analysis of high speed video gave time resolved profiles and airspeed for shedding. Testing 0.5 µl to 100 µl drops of water and hexadecane on poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA, Teflon, and a superhydrophobic surface (SHS) yielded a master curve describing critical airspeed for shedding for water drops on all surface tested. This curve predicts behavior for new surfaces, and explains experimental results published previously. It also indicates that the higher contact angle leads to easier shedding due to decreased adhesion and increased drag. Developing a novel floating element differential drag sensor gave the first measurements of the microNewton drag force experienced by drops. Forces magnitude is comparable to gravitational shedding from a tilted plate and to simplified models for drop adhesion, with deviations that suggest effects due to the air flow. Fluid properties are seen to have little effect on drag versus airspeed, and decreased adhesion is seen to be more important than increased drag for easing shedding. The relation between drag coefficient and Reynolds number increases slightly with liquid-solid contact angle, and with drop volume. Results suggest that the drop experiences increased drag compared to similarly shaped solid bodies due to drop oscillations aeroelasticly coupling into the otherwise laminar flow. The bulk and surface oscillations of sessile drops in cross flow was also studied, using a full profile analysis technique to determine mode shapes. Oscillation frequency/mode shape is similar for cross flow and quiescent drops. The highest order models collected from the diffuse literature are seen to be reasonably accurate, except at maximum and minimum ranges of contact angle.

▼ This study investigated the differences between a modified version of the traditional ranking format (MTF) and a novel ranking format called the BINS format. The BINS format utilizes drag-and-drop technology to rank alternatives, allows respondents to indicate distance between ranks, and also allows respondents to assign ties to the same alternatives. Seventy-two participants completed two ranking tasks: a ranking of items from the Rokeach Value Survey – Form D (RVS) and a ranking of aspects according to how important they were in a participant’s decision to attend the University of Dayton (UD). Participants used the MTF to complete one ranking task, and the BINS format for the other. Four variables were examined for each ranking format: Completion Time (as recorded by a computer control system and as self-reported by participants), Usability on the System Usability Scale (SUS), Format Preference, and Number of Repositionings (as recorded by a computer control system and as self-reported by participants). Participants completed the RVS ranking task more quickly using the MTF when compared to the BINS format. There were no significant differences in completion time when participants ranked aspects related to UD. However, for both the RVS and aspects related to UD, significantly more participants self-reported that the BINS format allowed them to complete their ranking task faster than the MTF. Participants rated the BINS format as significantly more usable than the MTF. The majority of participants (78%) preferred to use the BINS format more than the MTF. Participants reported repositioning alternatives (ranking an alternative and then re-ranking the same alternative) significantly more often using the BINS format than the MTF. There was not a significant difference in actual repositionings between the MTF and the BINS format as reported by the computer control system. Overall, the results of this study established that the BINS format is a clear improvement over the MTF. The BINS format outperformed the MTF on measures of usability, preference, and reported number of repositionings. Furthermore, the BINS format reduces respondent burden by displaying an ordered list of ranked alternatives throughout a ranking task. By capturing information on the distance between ranks and by permitting ties between alternatives, the BINS format allows researchers to collect rich ranking data that is also compatible with factor analytic techniques. These unique features of the BINS format make it an ideal tool for implementation in the field of electronic survey research. Advisors/Committee Members: Moroney, William (Advisor).

Under de senaste åren har den mobila tekniken i stort sett helt gått över till smartphones. Smartphones är i princip mer datorer än telefoner, som vi alltid bär med oss och som innehåller allt mer känslig information. Detta medför att kraven på säkerheten kring enheten ökar. Detta arbete undersöker om det är möjligt att finna en ny metod att låta användaren autentisera sig på, som är säkrare än de som är vedertagna idag, men samtidigt har liknande nivå av användbarhet. Vår idé, som vi arbetar med under namnet Colour a Symbol, baseras på att kombinera symboler och färger i par. För att utveckla idén skapade vi en funktionell prototyp, som sedan utvärderadesmed hjälp av en mindre testgrupp. Empirin visar på att Colour a Symbol har en god användbarhet, om än något för lång inloggningstid. Idéer för att förbättra inloggningstiden presenteras. Teoretiskt sett så är Colour a Symbol säkrare än exempelvis pinkod, men testgruppen var inte tillräckligt stor för att kunna bedöma den praktiska lösenordsrymden. Utformning av symboltema påverkar även förmodligen i hög grad den praktiska lösenordsrymden. Vår slutsats är att idén har en klar potential, men att det behövs ytterligare studier för att finslipa den.

During the past years mobile technology has moved almost entirely to smartphones. Smartphones are in essence more computers than phones, which we always carry with us and that contain ever more sensitive information. This requires that the level of security around the device increases. This study strives to find a new method of authenticating users, that is more secure than those that are established today, but at the same time has a similar level of usability. Our idea, which we work with under the name Colour a Symbol, is based upon making combinations of symbols and colours in pairs. In order to develop the idea we created a functional prototype, that was evaluated by a smaller test group. The empirical data implies that Colour a Symbol has good usability, if only a little too long login time. Ideas as to shorten the login time are suggested. Theoretically, Colour a Symbol is more secure than for an example pincode, but the test group was not large enough to estimate the practical password space. Design of the symbol theme probably also affects the practical password space to a high degree. Our conclusion is that the idea has clear potential, but that further studies are needed to fine-tune it.
