The aim of this study was; from a group of boys and girls description and interpretation of interaction with other young people, personnel and the environment of the youth centre illuminate how the social gender are constructed and maintained at the youth centre. In this study we have tried to analyse the phenomena from an intersectionalistic perspective. Except gender, the analytic category social class have been tried to capture. Our theoretical standing point is social constructivism. Institutionalized structures in our society are constructed by humans, gender is not only a biological construction it is also a man created construction. We are “doing gender”. The young people in our study tend to explain the differences between boys and girls through an essentialistic point of view. For example they explain that boys are more immature and girls are more obedient by cause of nature. The young people also experience that boys and girls are equal at the youth centre. The girls express that they do the same things that boys do in the youth centre. The boys tell it like this; “It’s nice when girls want to do what we like to do”. At the same time they say that they are not interested in joining the girls in what they like to do. Our comprehension of the young peoples statements are that the youth centres are arenas for boys which girls are allowed to join on the condition that they do what the boys want to do. Syftet med studien var att utifrån en grupp tjejers och killars beskrivningar av och uppfattningar om samspelet med andra ungdomar, personal och fritidsgårdens miljö belysa hur det sociala könet konstrueras och upprätthålls vid en fritidsgård. I vår studie har vi valt att analysera fenomenet utifrån ett intersektionellt perspektiv. Förutom kön, har vi också använt social klass som analytisk kategori. Vår teoretiska utgångspunkt har varit socialkonstruktivism. Att kön inte enbart är en biologisk konstruktion utan också något socialt konstruerat av människor. Vi gör kön! Ungdomarna i studien förklarade skillnaderna mellan tjejer och killar ur ett essentialistiskt perspektiv. Till exempel att killar är mer omogna än tjejer och att tjejer är mer lydiga än killar. Ungdomarna förklarade också att tjejer och killar var jämställda på fritidsgården. Tjejerna upplever att de gör samma saker på fritidsgården, som vad killarna gör. Killarna tycker att ”det är roligt när tjejer vill göra det vi vill göra”. Samtidigt som killarna säger att de inte vill göra det tjejerna vill göra. Vår tolkning är att fritidsgården är en arena konstruerad för killar där tjejer gärna får vara med under förutsättningen att de vill göra det killarna vill göra. ▼ Sedan 70-talet och ökningen av kvinnornas deltagande på arbetsmarknaden har hemarbetets fördelning diskuterats som en viktig jämställdhetsfråga i Sverige. Det anses inte längre givet att kvinnor ska stå för matlagning medan män ska stå för försörjning, då många av de tidigare könsbaserade skyldigheterna inte längre har samma legitimitet. Många tidigare studier har utförts kring hemarbete, ofta i syfte att studera arbetsfördelning i familjer med barn. När sambor får barn förändras arbetsfördelningen mellan dem. Denna studie bidrar med att belysa samt illustrera kvinnornas egen subjektiva upplevelse av hemarbetet i familjebildningens första stadie då paren ännu inte skaffat barn. Syftet med studien har varit att studera unga svenska kvinnors subjektiva syn på hemarbete och sina roller i hemarbetet, med utgångspunkt i en kvalitativ konstruktivistisk ansats. Studien har utförts med en teoretisk utgångspunkt i rationell handlingsteori, utbytesteori samt i teorin om att göra kön. Respondenterna har intervjuats i semistrukturerade intervjuer. De har berättat om hur de upplever hemarbetet utifrån sina roller och ansvarsområden, förväntningar, jämförelser, förändringar och emotioner. På grund av urvalets storlek kan resultaten inte anses vara representativt för hela populationen. Materialet kan dock anses vara tillräckligt för att beskriva den subjektiva upplevelsen av hemarbetet inom urvalet. Enligt respondenterna finns det i enlighet med tidigare studier en stark koppling mellan att sköta hemarbete och att vara kvinna. Resultatet visar bland annat ett missnöje hos respondenterna kopplat till en ojämn arbetsdelning i hemmet, samt till deras respektives oförmåga att ta ansvar i hemarbetet. Respondenterna delar en önskan om att varje par ska ha möjlighet att skapa en individuellt anpassad arbetsdelning utan att ta hänsyn till samhällets normer kring kön och jämställdhet. De menar att en balans mellan kompensationer och motprestationer är viktigare än att ta hänsyn till normer kring jämställdheten. Resultaten visar även på de svårigheter som respondenterna upplever att potentiella förändringar är kopplade till. Samtliga respondenter anser att en förändring av dess nuvarande arbetsfördelning är möjlig, dock endast genom handlingsalternativ som är förknippade med negativa konsekvenser. Detta leder till att de undviker att försöka förändra sin situation, trots missnöje.

Föreliggande uppsats utgår från en kvalitativ studie där medarbetarnas uppfattningar av jämställdhet har undersökts inom en statligt ägd organisation. Studien har genomförts utifrån ett genusperspektiv där syftet är att diskutera hur jämställdhet skapas i teori och praktik. Syftet innefattas även av medarbetarnas uppfattningar av manligt respektive kvinnligt och har besvarats med tre frågeställningar. Den första ser till vilka uppfattningar medarbetarna har av jämställdhet, nummer två behandlar policydokumentens betydelse och till sist undersöks vad som verkar hindrande samt främjande för jämställdhet. Empirin har samlats in genom sex kvalitativa intervjuer samt dokumentanalyser av organisationens policys rörande jämställdhet. Studiens huvudresultat visar att organisationen misslyckas med kvalitativ jämställdhet och att fokus på kvantitativ jämställdhet inte är tillräckligt för att skapa jämställdhet. Resultatet visade även att normer styr mer än policys med lovord och att det finns förväntningar på hur män respektive kvinnor ska bete sig. Studiens slutsats är att synliggörande samt ifrågasättande av stereotypa uppfattningar krävs för att möjliggöra kvalitativ jämställdhet.

This essay is a qualitative study in which the employees' perceptions of gender equality have been investigated within a state-owned organization. The study has been conducted on the basis of a gender perspective where the purpose that is answered is how stereotypical perceptions of male and female are recreated and maintained. How the qualitative equality within the organization is affected by the stereotypical views is also included in the purpose, and has been answered with three questions. The first looks at what perceptions the employees have of gender equality, number two deals with the significance of the policy documents and the last question examines what seems to be obstructing and promoting gender equality. The empirical data has been collected through six qualitative interviews and document analyzes of the organisation's policies on gender equality. The main results of the study showed that the organization fails with qualitative equality and that quantitative equality is not enough. The results also showed that norms govern more than policies with praise and that there are expectations of how men and women should behave. The study's conclusion is that visibility and questioning of stereotypical perceptions is required to enable qualitative equality.

Denna studie grundar sig i en forskning gällande arbetet kring genus och jämställdhet i två olika yrkesbranscher inom samma organisation. Den svenska arbetsmarknaden är könssegregerad och granskas arbetsmarknaden närmare framträder den interna könssegregeringen. Det betyder att kvinnor och män med samma yrke och ibland samma arbetsgivare utför olika arbetsuppgifter. Enligt tidigare forskning har kvinnors andel av arbetskraften ökat kraftigt sedan 1960 och detta har medfört att ett stort steg tagits mot ökad jämställdhet. Kvinnor och män har valt olika yrkesinriktningar som resulterat i en könssegregerad arbetsmarknad. En bidragande orsak till att den svenska arbetsmarknaden fortfarande är starkt könssegregerad är beskrivningen av yrken och branscher såsom "typiskt kvinnliga" och "typiskt manliga". Utgångspunkten för denna studie är att ta fram mer forskning kring genus och jämställdhet. Syftet med studien är således att undersöka två olika yrkesbranscher som uppvisar kvinnodominans respektive mansdominans inom en och samma organisation. Tidigare forskning påvisar att olikheter i traditioner, förhållningssätt samt värderingar som är relaterade till genusmönstret bidrar till att kvinnor dominerar i hemtjänsten och män i de tekniska verksamheterna. Dessa genusmönster har stor betydelse för arbetsmiljöförhållandena eftersom det påverkar alla delar av vårt samhälle. Studien har genomförts med kvalitativa intervjuer sett ur ett hermeneutiskt perspektiv. Intervjuer har genomförts med personer med olika befattningar från räddningstjänsten, vård och omsorg (hemtjänst) samt personalchef. Resultaten från intervjuerna har analyserats utifrån den teoretiska referensramen. I denna studie har vi kommit fram till att den mansdominerade yrkesbranschen har kommit längre i arbetet för jämställdhet genom exempelvis lön och ombyggnationer till kvinnliga omklädningsrum. Samt att vissa av brandmännens partners är emot kvinnliga brandmän.

This study is based on research into the work of gender and equality in two different professions within the same organization. The Swedish labor market is gender segregated and is the labor market to be examined closer stands the internal gender segregation. This means that women and men with the same occupation and sometimes the same employer perform different tasks. According to previous research, women's share of labor has increased significantly since 1960, and this has led to a major step towards increased gender equality. Women and men have chosen different professions that resulted in a gender segregated labor market. A contributory reason why the Swedish labor market is still highly gender segregated is the description of professions and industries such as "typically female" and "typically male". The starting point for this study is to develop more research on the importance of the Swedish gender-based labor market. ▼ In recent years, the men's fashion magazine has become a new media genre that attracts lots of attention. The sales, advertisements, and publications of the men's fashion magazine have reached a remarkable performance. Most important of all, men's fashion magazines not only provide the male readers with content about appearance beauty but also mold the male readers into a new kind of masculinity called âNew Manâ. The âNew Manâ masculinity means that men can feel more comfortable to take some gender practices to improve their appearance beauty, such as putting on make-up, applying skincare products and so on. Researches about men's fashion magazine in Taiwan mostly focus on market performance, and the notion and practice of male readers are ignored. This present study drawn on the audience in everyday life theory, also employed the masculinity theory based on the sociologist R. W. Connell and the view of fluid identity (multiple subjectivities) based on the poststructuralist feminists. This study applied a methodology of qualitative in-depth interview with 6 male participants, tried to find the relation between menâs fashion magazine and everyday gender practices of the readers. The study found that when the male readers interpret the âNew Manâ image in the men's fashion magazine, they do negotiate the mainstream masculinity discourse in their everyday life. Their negotiation involves their unequal investment in multiple subjectivities in everyday life. The study also found that men's fashion magazine is a text that can mediate the masculinity discourse, so the everyday gender practices of readers regarding the magazine text are their negotiation of masculinity as well. The male readers read men's fashion magazine and take âNew Manâ gender practices (ex. applying skincare products, putting on make-up, and taking care of figure) to create their own unique masculinity which exclude from femininity. In conclusion, the new version masculinity (New Man) does overlap the old one (mainstream or traditional masculinity), which not only shows the diversity of masculinity but also provide the male readers with some space to exert their agency and negotiate the meaning of âwhat it means to be a maleâ. ▼ Barnmorskor har historiskt sett förknippats med kvinnor, kvinnor som ville hjälpa andra kvinnor med sina förlossningar. Detta yrke har sedan dess kallats för att vara ett yrke där de anställdas vilja att arbeta kommer från motivet att hjälpa andra, ett kall till yrket. Låga löner och dålig arbetsmiljö har barnmorskor i media vittnat om i dagsläget, och barnmorskor avslutar sin anställning på grund ut av detta. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur fem barnmorskor upplever sina arbetsvillkor utifrån ett genusperspektiv. Ett intresse att försöka förstå om de intervjuades arbetsvillkor påverkas utav det faktum att arbetsmarknaden är könssegregerad och barnmorskeyrket är klassats som ett typiskt kvinnoyrke. Det finns idag lite forskning om hur barnmorskor upplever sina arbetsvillkor, och denna studie hoppas kunna bidra med information som kan vara till nytta vid vidare forskning. Det empiriska materialet utgår från tematiska intervjuer med fem arbetade barnmorskor i Stockholms län, två arbetade idag med förlossning och tre arbetade med mödravård. Resultatet visade att det fanns så väl positiva som negativa arbetsvillkor inom yrket, det positiva innehöll karriärmöjligheter, självständighet och ansvar. Viljan och glädjen att arbeta som barnmorska verkade väga upp för de sämre villkoren i yrket, vilket antydde att det fortfarande rådde någon form av kall till yrket. Mer negativt såg man på lönen och den höga arbetsbelastning som förkommit på förlossningsmottagningar. Resultatet visade tydligt att alla intervjuade ansåg att lönen var för låg, och löneutvecklingen behövde även den förnyas. Stress och överbelastning var några av de beskrivningar som det intervjuade berättade om förlossningsvården. Med hjälp av genusteorier visar analysen på att det fanns tendenser som antyder att yrket värderas lägre än andra yrken på grund av den rådande könssegregeringen på arbetsmarknaden och på grund av att yrket betraktas som ett kall.

The purpose of this study is to obtain a better understanding of what people fear might happen to them when being outside after dark. A lot of quantitative studies have been made on the subject of fear of crime to generalize and quantify people’s fears, but lacks any in-depth information about their fears and experiences. I have chosen to research about just that. Theories used are Doing gender and Ideal victims and I have interviewed 8 individuals about what they fear, why they fear it, where they think this fear comes from and other feeling and experiences associated with it. In my analysis we can see that there is a big difference in what individuals fear between men and women. The women in this study are more scared than the men to the point that they do not really venture outside after dark. Men on the other hand feel a bit more unsafe after dark, but never enough to avoid going outside. I also found that women feel shame over their pre-conceptions of men’s crime towards women. Men were mostly scared of assault and robbery while women are mostly scared of sexual assault, and their fears mostly derive from media and experiences people close to them have had.

Syftet med denna studie är att få en bättre förståelse över var människor är rädda kan hända dem om de är ute när det är mörkt. Många kvantitativa studier har genomförts angående rädsla för brott för att kunna kvantifiera samt generalisera resultaten till en hel population. Detta resulterar i en förlust av djupet i individers rädslor kring att bli utsatta för brott. Jag har valt att forska om just det. Valda teorier är ”göra genus” och ”ideella offer” och jag har intervjuat 8 individer angående vad de är rädda för, varför de är rädda för det, vart de tror denna rädsla kommer ifrån samt andra känslor associerade med det. I min analys kan vi se att det finns en stor skillnad mellan vad män och kvinnorna i denna studie är rädda för. Kvinnorna var räddare än män till den punkten att de avstod från att gå ut under kvällar och nätter. Männen å andra sidan kände sig lite osäkrare när det var mörkt, men aldrig tillräckligt för att avstå från att gå ut. Jag fann även att kvinnor upplevde skam över deras fördomar mot mäns brott mot kvinnor. Män var främst rädda för misshandel och rån medan kvinnor var rädda för sexuella brott, och deras rädslor härstammade från media och erfarenheter individer nära dem hade upplevt.

▼ Given that the military is widely recognized as one of the central sites of gender definition and production in society, my dissertation explores the ways in which women who voluntarily enter the military, a traditionally male preserve, may be acting in ways that are subversive to the gender order. Most research on women in the military has focused on their efforts to do gender in a manner that helps them fit in to this androcentric environment. The aim of my research was to explore the performance of gender by women in the military from a different perspective: one that focuses on their agency in resisting rather than conforming to traditional gender norms. My project investigated whether or not Navy women actively attempted to “un-do” traditional gender definitions and expectations while simultaneously attempting to expand the boundaries of femininity and what it means to be a woman. Military women often must walk a gender tightrope. They seek acceptance as legitimate warriors, but must at the same time be cautious not to ultimately surrender their femininity to the hegemony of masculinity within this institution by “doing masculinity” instead. This study used qualitative methodology to investigate: (1) the performance of gender among military women, focusing specifically on their resistance to traditional gender norms; (2) how women’s social location in the military bureaucracy and rank structure influences their resistance to traditional gender norms; and (3) how race and class are implicated in women’s resistance to traditional gender norms within the military context. My work is grounded in Navy women’s personal experiences and daily interactions with their male colleagues. Data was collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 23 active-duty officer and 9 enlisted Surface Warfare-Qualified Navy women. Data was analyzed using grounded theory methodologies. In moving beyond theory to explore the experiences of women in the military empirically from this unconventional perspective, I hoped to further illuminate our understanding of gender and the gendering process, and resistance to it. I found outcomes differing from those we might expect given existing gender theory. Specifically, I found that women who focus on presenting their “authentic selves” while doing gender “a la carte” offer the greatest hope for altering the gender order, even if their actions seem least satisfying to the outside observer as forms of “resistance.” Furthermore, I found that women who actively project their femininity or, conversely, downplay their femininity do so in response to negative male stereotypes of military women. Several intervening variables not presently addressed in gender literature have combined over the past decade to make the Surface Navy more welcoming to women, especially officers. Several scholars, journalists and activists have documented street harassment during the last two centuries, and the recent development of organizations such as Hollaback! and Stop Street Harassment, as well increased attention from mainstream and feminist press, suggests street harassment is a serious social problem worthy of empirical investigation. In this dissertation, I focus on street harassment, fear of violence, and processes of doing gender. I take an intersectional approach to understand the relationships between gender, race, and sexuality, street harassment, fear, and social control. Furthermore, I investigate how accountability to being recognizably female is linked to street harassment and fear of crime for lesbians and other queer women. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with thirty white and women of color lesbians and bisexuals, I explore street harassment experiences, perceptions of fear and risk, and strategies for staying safe from the perspectives of queer women in rural, suburban, and urban locations in the Midwest. I discuss several key findings. First, there are distinct links between “doing gender” and the types of harassment these women experience, as well as links between “doing gender “and the types of assault they fear. Second, race matters - institutional violence shapes the fears and safety strategies of the queer women of color in my sample, and white privilege affects women’s willingness to consider self-defense in response to their fears. Finally, responses to fear and street harassment are shaped by the incite/invite dilemma. The incite/invite dilemma describes the predicament women face during street harassment encounters when they try to avoid responses that might incite escalated violence while also avoiding responses that might be viewed as an invitation for more aggressive harassment. This study extends research on accountability and doing gender, street harassment, fear of rape, and the gender differential in fear of crime. There are several practical implications of these findings. Chief among them is the need for activists and scholars to be attentive to the ways in which racism and racial inequality shape street harassment for women of color. In addition, feminists who work to end street harassment should broaden their focus to include a host of other pressing issues that influence the severity of and risks connected to street harassment for members of queer communities and communities of color. There are also theoretical implications for the theory of doing gender. Knowledge about accountability to sex category remains incomplete. Findings suggest the need to further investigate processes of accountability to sex category, with particular attention to diverse arrangements of orientations to sex category, presumptions about sex category, race, and queer gender identities. The aim of this study was to acquire knowledge about leadership and how an organization that describes to be feminist is organized. This was done by studying how everyday tasks and institutionalised practices interact in the construction of the ”feminist” organization and its leadership. This study is a qualitative case-study based on an exploratory and investigative approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews and document study. The organization used in this study is a political youth organization with a feministic and socialistic agenda. This study is based on social constructionistic ontology and combined structural- and process perspectives on leadership and organization. The analysis was preformed using a theoretical framework comprising new institutional organization theory and a ”doing gender”-perspective.Results show that the studied organization can be described as ”feministic.” The analysis shows that there is a gap between the formal organizational structure and the informal organization. The feministic idea within the organization is mainly present at a discursive level where gender is a central aspect. The leadership within the organization is described by its members as a formal and collective leadership based on an equal leadership ideal. But analysis shows that the described leadership is contradictive. The leadership appears to be a male, gender-based construction at a symbolic level while girls in leading positions are seen as divergent as they are gendered in their leadership. The feministic idea's impact on leadership mainly consists of strengthening, supporting and developing girls as authorities within the organization. Furthermore, this study showed no evidence of a specific ”feminist leadership,” suggesting that a feminist organization does not have to bring a feminist leadership.

Syftet med denna studie har varit att utveckla kunskap om organisering och ledarskap i en organisation som beskriver sig vara feministisk. Det har skett genom att undersöka hur vardagligt görande inom organisationer och institutionaliserade praktiker samverkar i konstruktionen av den ”feministiska” organisationen och dess ledarskap. Studien är en kvalitativ fallstudie utifrån en explorativ och utforskande ansats. Data har samlats in genom observation, intervju och dokumentstudie. Organisationen som har studerats är en feministisk, socialistiskt och politisk ungdomsorganisation. Uppsatsen har utgått från en socialkonstruktionistisk ontologi och ett kombinerat struktur- och processperspektiv på ledarskap och organisering. Analysen har skett med stöd av ett teoretiskt ramverk bestående av nyinstitutionell organisationsteori och ett ”doing gender”-perspektiv.Resultaten visar att den studerade organisationen kan beskrivas som ”feministisk”. Située au croisement de la sociologie du genre et de la sociologie des groupes professionnels, cette thèse vise à explorer quand et comment le genre devient un élément constitutif de l’organisation du travail dans les métiers de la viande et des fleurs. À partir d’une enquête ethnographique qui prête une attention particulière à l’agencement phénoménal des activités, elle s’attache à rendre compte de la manière dont les appartenances sexuées sont actualisées dans le cours des interactions professionnelles. Elle montre que les membres d’un groupe professionnel statistiquement sexué ne mobilisent pas toujours le genre de la même manière et ne l’investissent pas forcément d’une même signification opératoire. Il ne s’agit donc pas de supposer d’emblée une pertinence constante de l’appartenance sexuée, même dans des contextes professionnels marqués par des asymétries profondes de ce point de vue. Il convient plutôt de reconnaitre que la mise en pratique du genre est susceptible de se décliner de façons différentes selon les contextes d’interaction. En insistant sur les effets de situation dans la manière dont les individus « font du genre » (do gender), cette thèse apporte une contribution originale à l’analyse des processus de (dé-)sexuation des activités professionnelles. Enfin, en s’intéressant à leur organisation et aux épreuves que les professionnel·le·s traversent, cette thèse propose une lecture sociologique de deux métiers qui demeurent encore peu ou pas étudiés

Located at the intersection of the gender studies and the sociology of occupational groups, this thesis aims to explore when and how gender becomes a constituent part of workplace activities for two contrasting occupational groups: butchers and florists. Based on ethnographic fieldwork that focuses on the phenomenal organization of activities, it seeks to account for the ways in which gender becomes relevant to these professionals and their clients in the course of occupational interactions. It shows that the members of a statistically gender segregated occupation don’t always mobilize gender in the same way and don’t necessarily invest it with the same operative meaning. Therefore, even in contexts marked by profound gender asymmetries, it is important not to assume a constant relevance of gender and sex categories. Rather, it should be recognized that the gendered practices are likely to be quite specific to the occupational context under study. By focusing on the effects of the situation on the ways in which individuals “do gender”, this thesis makes an original contribution to the analysis of the processes of (de-)gendering professional activities. Finally, by studying the organization and professional experiences of butchers and florists, this thesis enhances our sociological reading of two occupations that have been little studied to date.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die drei postkolonialen Romane Quicksand (1928) von Nella Larsen, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) von Jean Rhys und Homegoing (2016) von Yaa Gyasi anhand von intersektionalen Figurenanalysen untersucht. Ziel der Arbeit ist es aufzuzeigen, dass es in Bezug auf die Identität literarischer Figuren wenig Sinn macht, einzelne Kategorien wie Geschlecht oder Ethnizität getrennt zu analysieren. In der Arbeit wird dargelegt, dass die Kategorien miteinander verwoben sind und die Identität entsprechend beeinflussen. Daher ist es adäquat, einen intersektionalen Zugang zu wählen. Zu Beginn der Arbeit wird der Begriff Intersektionalität eingeführt und es werden verschiedene wissenschaftliche Positionen dargestellt. Neben der Intersektionalität werden die Konzepte der Ethnizität, der Identität, des Doing Gender/Doing Difference und der Double Consciousness behandelt. Anhand dieser Konzepte wird die intersektionale Figurenanalyse entwickelt. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird die intersektionale Figurenanalyse auf die drei Romane angewendet. Durch den Vergleich der Romane kann dargelegt werden, dass in postkolonialen Romanen von Autorinnen zwar häufig weibliche Hauptfiguren mit ähnlichen Charakteristiken vorkommen, sich die Figuren aber durch ihre individuellen Erfahrungen aufgrund der erlebten Kategorisierungen unterscheiden. Die Figurenanalysen machen deutlich, dass die erlebten Kategorisierungen das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl und die Selbstwahrnehmung der Figuren beeinflussen. Zusammenfassend zeigt die Arbeit, dass Intersektionalität ein geeigneter Zugang ist, um literarische Figuren zu analysieren.

In this master thesis, the three postcolonial novels Quicksand (1928) by Nella Larsen, Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) by Jean Rhys and Homegoing (2016) by Yaa Gyasi are analysed by applying an intersectional character analysis. The aim of the thesis is to show that it makes little sense to analyse individual categories such as gender or ethnicity separately when it comes to the identity of literary characters. The thesis shows that the categories influence the identity in an interwoven way. Therefore, an intersectional approach is purposeful. At the beginning of the thesis, the term intersectionality is introduced and various academic positions are presented. In addition to intersectionality, the concepts of ethnicity, identity, doing gender/doing difference, and double consciousness are discussed. Based on these concepts, the intersectional character analysis is developed. In the second part of the thesis, the intersectional character analysis is applied to the three novels. By comparing the novels, it can be shown that in postcolonial novels of female authors, female main characters with similar characteristics often occur. Despite their similarity, the characters differ in their individual experiences on the basis of the categorisations they experience. The character analyses make it evident that the experienced categorisations affect the sense of belonging and the self-perception of the characters.…
