French Law stands out by a special law for commercial negociation. However, disputed, this one is challenged. Therefore, our thesis has to determine its legitimacy and its efficiency.First, its legitimacy is etablished. In order to correct the abuse of commercial power, law for commercial negociation is justified ; filling gaps of the contract law and the concurrential law, its specificity is justified too.Secondly, its efficiency is questionable. Indeed, it takes into account the effect of the power imbalance, the abuse, but does not consider its causes. That's why, many proposals have to be note. Among those, the etablishement of a collective bargaining seems the most relevant.

▼ The two-parameter Weibull function was used to
predict forest stand diameter distributions and growth.
Diameter
distribution models were developed for even-aged
Douglas-fir stands, 20 to 40 years old, in Oregon and
Washington.
In order to test if the two-parameter Weibull
function can adequately describe the diameter
distributions of such stands, maximum likelihood
estimated parameters of the two parameter Weibull
function were compared with observed
diameter
distributions.
Two sets of models were developed. The first set
of models predicted the diameter distributions of
unthinned forest stands from stand variables. Models were developed to predict each of the two parameters of the Weibull
function from stand variables. The Weibull
function with the two estimated parameters became the
diameter
distribution model for the stand. The second set
of models predicted the growth of a stand of trees after
thinning. A Weibull diameter
distribution model was
developed for a forest stand after a growth period. The
parameters of the Weibull function were estimated from
stand variables at the beginning of the growth period and
the length of the growth period.
Results showed that the two-parameter Weibull
function can describe the diameter distributions of even-aged
stands of Douglas-fir, 20 to 40 years old, in Oregon
and Washington. The diameter
distribution model for
unthinned stands predicted the observed diameter
distributions in an independent data set quite well. The
diameter
distribution model for a thinned stand after a
growth period gave a satisfactory prediction for 93
percent of the observed diameter distributions in the
independent data set.
The two-parameter Weibull function in this study
gave at least as good results as that which has been
obtained with the three-parameter Weibull function in
previous studies.

▼ Utilities of
distribution systems now are under the pressure of improving the reliability of power supply, not only from the urge to increase revenue, but also from requirements of their customers and the Independent Service Organization (ISO)???s regulation on power quality. Optimization in fault management tasks has the potential of improving system reliability by reducing the duration and scale of outages caused by faults through fast fault isolation and service restoration.
The research reported by this dissertation aims at improving
distribution system reliability through optimized fault management. Three questions are explored and answered: 1) how to establish the cause-and-effect relationship between fault management and system reliability; 2) how can individual fault management tasks benefit from the newly emerged smart grid technologies; and 3) how to improve the overall performance of fault management under new operation condition.
Optimization of the fault management is done through minimizing a risk function representing system reliability. The improvement in system reliability is approached in following steps: 1) a risk function consists of
distribution reliability indices is defined as the criterion for system reliability; 2) a new fault location method is proposed first that can accurately locate the faults with the assistance of voltage-sag-measurements from system-wide Intelligent Electronics Devices (IEDs); 3) the fault management task of field inspection is optimized using the risk function and the probability model of the true fault location established using results from fault location; 4) the decision making on the execution of during-fault service restoration is optimized through Monte Carlo simulation; 5) the optimized fault management is utilized in processing the faults and the improvement in system reliability is assessed by reduction of costs associated with these faults.
The proposed optimization is demonstrated on a realistic
distribution system. The stochastic model of faults in the system is built with consideration of normal and extreme weather conditions. Results show that the proposed optimization is capable of improving system reliability by reducing the mean and variance of outage cost calculated over the simulated years.

▼ Significant attention has been given to study various moments of the Riemann zeta function, ζ, its logarithm and their generalizations However, not much is known about the moments of \frac{ζ'}{ζ}. and the logarithmic derivative of more general L-functions. For π, a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL
d( \mathbb{A}
ℚ),
there is an associated L-function, L(s, π). We study the value
distribution of its logarithmic derivative on the 1-line, \frac{L'}{L}(1+it, π). We are able to prove that for t ∈ [T, 2T], in some sense, \frac{L'}{L}(1+it, π) has ``almost'' normal
distribution with mean 0 and variance √{\frac{log(y(T))}{2y(T)}}. An essential ingredient of the proof is the fact that our function of interest can be approximated by Dirichlet polynomial with coefficients supported on prime powers. We prove similar results for \frac{L'}{L}(1+it, π × π̅) and log(L(1+it, π)).

▼ High Performance Computation (HPC) requires a proper and efficient scheme for distribution of the computational workload across different computational nodes. The HPX (High Performance ParalleX) runtime system currently lacks a module that automates data distribution process so that the programmer does not have to manually perform data distribution. Further, there is no mechanism allowing to perform load balancing of computations. This thesis addresses that issue by designing and developing a user friendly programming interface conforming to the C++11/14 Standards and integrated with HPX which enables to specify various distribution parameters for a distributed vector. We present the three different distribution policies implemented so far: block, cyclic, and block-cyclic. These policies influence the way the distributed vector maps any global (linear) index into the vector onto a pair of values describing the number of the (possibly remote data partition) and the corresponding local index. We present performance analysis results from applying the different distribution policies to calculating the Mandelbrot set; an example of an ‘embarrassingly parallel’ computation. For this benchmark we use an instance of a distributed vector where each element holds a tuple for the current index and the value of related to an individual pixel of the generated Mandelbrot plot. We compare the influence of different distribution policies and their corresponding parameters on the overall execution time of the calculation. We demonstrate that the block-cyclic distribution policy yields best results for calculating the Mandelbrot set as it more evenly load balances the computation across the computational nodes. The provided API and implementation gives the user a high level an abstraction for developing applications while hiding low-level data distribution details.

The intensification of agricultural practices in the last decades profoundly changed agricultural ecosystems. Grassland birds are particularly affected by these changes and have been declining sharply. The implementation of Agro-Environmental Schemes (AES) failed to halt this decline. Assessing their effectiveness requires a better understanding of the ecological responses of species in the ecosystem. We attempted to quantify and analyze the distribution and habitat selection of grassland birds in the floodplains of the Loire basin in Western France. This study aimed at building and testing relevant environmental predictors of moisture, climate, vegetation and landscape. Then, we established species response to these predictors and built local distribution models. This study confirmed the prominent rôle of moisture gradient for grassland bird populations in floodplains. The location on the…

Manfred Eigen introduced the concept of quasispecies in the early 70s, in order to describe the steady – state distribution of a population subject to mutation and selection forces. Most classical models showing a quasispecies phenomenon are deterministic and deal with a population of an infinite size. The aim of this thesis is to study several stochastic and finite – population models, and to show that a quasispecies phenomenon arises in these models too. We study in detail the Galton – Watson, Wright – Fisher and Moran models. We confirm that a quasispecies phenomenon is present in the three models, and that the distribution of this quasispecies is common to all three models as well as to Eigen's original model. Moreover, we describe explicitly the distributionof the quasispecies for the sharp peak landscape, as well as for fitness functions which depend only on the Hamming distance to the master sequence.

▼ This thesis explores the links between film cultures and film
distribution. What happens to film culture when a film is passed between friends on a USB, or downloaded from a cyberlocker, or purchased on a copied DVD at a local grocery store? Beyond the cinema and the major commercial players of the formal sector, film now lives in a multiplex of different access points, from iTunes downloads, legal BitTorrent releases, host-your-own community screenings and free YouTube streams. New forms of
distribution beyond the dominant commercial players are not just restructuring the film industry, they are presenting theoretical challenges to film scholars. As disruptions and innovations in the industry, these trends speak to the research questions: How to conceptualise new forms of
distribution not previously subjected to scholarly analysis? How do audiences in Australia access film today? How does the
distribution of a film influence the terms of its use and reception by audiences? This thesis takes a multi-method path to interrogate the cultural-economic exchanges within the
distribution screenscape and a diversity of
distribution circuits. Case studies include Australia’s formal
distribution sector, Sydney Film Festival analysed as a distributor and new and disruptive digital circuits such as the BitTorrent Now e-store.Combining industrial analysis, interviews with distributors and ethnographic observation, this thesis contributes to new knowledge in three major ways. First, throughout film studies,
distribution has been primarily analysed as an industrial phenomenon. I attune
distribution research to the phenomenon of film culture, showing how
distribution and exhibition play into the contingent life of film culture. Second, I expose emerging forms of
distribution to scholarly examination, namely cinema-on-demand, crowdfunding and e-stores that legally use file-sharing technologies to the advantage of film producers. Third, the thesis develops a new conceptualisation of
distribution, moving from the historically dominant commercial conceptualisation of
distribution – the sale of films through various platforms, territories and ancillary markets – to a view of
distribution as the means of a film’s arrival in a
distribution screenscape dominated by informal and ancillary circuits.

▼ This work provides a survey of general class of distributions generated from a mixture of beta random variables. We provide an extensive review of the literature, concerning generating new distributions via the inverse CDF transformation. In particular, we account for beta generated and Kumaraswamy generated families of distributions. We provide a brief summary of each of their families of distributions. We also propose a new asymmetric mixture
distribution, which is an alternative to beta generated distributions. We provide basic properties of this new class of distributions generated from the Laplace model. We also address the issue of parameter estimation of this new skew generalized Laplace model.

▼ The world-wide earthquake locator is an online mapping application that maps the location and severity of earthquakes which have occurred since 1970`s. The current mapping system the site is using is beginning to look dated and there is an opportunity to update the display using a Google maps mash-up. This would display the data from The U.S geological survey in a modern manner that is consistent with current online mapping trends.
A new visual representation of the USGS information would hopefully allow trends and patterns within the data to be identified. Modernising the map using open source tools such as the Google Ajax API, KML, Perl scripts and Oracle RDBMS should improve the experience for the user and allow them to learn more about the
distribution of larger earthquakes.
Analysis of databases and the data infrastructure will be required in order to ascertain why certain aspects of the site currently do not function.

▼ Renewable energy production is an important
application of ultrasound waves. Ultrasound waves can increase the
ethanol and biodiesel generated by biomass during metabolic
behaviour. Ultrasound distribution and ultrasound generation
efficiency of transducers are important for these applications. The
ultrasound distribution and ultrasound generation efficiency of
transducers were studied in this project. Theories of ultrasound
distribution and ultrasound transducer were studied during
literature survey. A method of transducer modeling was proposed
based on research works before for studies of ultrasound
distribution of a cylindrical transducer, which will be used in
biodiesel production system in the future. Validation of the model
was carried out. The model of a cylindrical transducer was built.
The ultrasound distribution described by the model was validated by
both simulation in MATLAB and measurement by a hydrophone. Studies
of ultrasound generation efficiency were carried out from a
mechanics point of view. Governing equations for displacement
distribution over the transducer active surface were studied. A
physical quantity was proposed for comparison of generation
efficiency between different transducer structures. Transducer
arrays with rectangular plate transducers being the element were
validated by MATLAB simulation to be more efficient in ultrasound
generation than a cylindrical transducer. A triangular prism
transducer array was proposed to replace a cylindrical transducer
in applications.

▼ The mechanisms responsible for aseismic creep along the central section of the San Andreas Fault are not well understood. Evidence for both pressure- and chemical-dependent microprocesses of creep have been reported. Here, the kinematics and deformation mechanisms of the Southwest Deforming Zone (SDZ) of the San Andreas Fault are investigated through fabric analysis of survivor clasts recovered from ~2.6 km depth by coring at the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD). The size-frequency and shape-size distributions of survivor clasts from the SDZ were characterized through 3D analysis of X-Ray Computed Tomography (XCT) images of SDZ core samples. A number of processing techniques were employed to calibrate, remove artifacts, filter and threshold the XCT images and distinguish survivor clasts so as to enable 3D rendering of clasts for size and shape analysis. The size of clasts fit a power-law probability
distribution function with a negative exponent (scaling parameter) of 3 over the range of 0.45 mm to 60 mm in diameter. Using best-fit primitive ellipsoids and clast volume as reference, clast shapes are characterized as oblate spheroids, moderate (1.5-2.5) aspect ratio with high convexity and sphericity (>0.6); the shape distributions appear invariant with clast size.
The size and shape characteristics, and the uniform spatial
distribution of survivor clasts within the SDZ, suggest that the zone has attained a mature, quasi steady-state condition. The scaling parameter of 3 supports that the reduction in the size of clasts is a result of fracture consistent with a nearest neighbor fragmentation model for high strain, matrix-dominated shear zones. However, clast shape distributions support that surface wear, such as by abrasion or pressure solution, are the dominant clast shaping process.

▼ The advent of the Internet as a music
distribution channel led to significant transformation of the South African music industry at the end of the twentieth century. The Internet and electronic supply chain systems influences customers to migrate from physical product offerings to digital downloading platforms that offer access to digitalised music
distribution and quasi-real-time consumption. While technological innovations have enhanced the digital
distribution of music online,
distribution systems have become a challenge within the supply chain network. This study aims to determine the implications of the paradigm shift in supply chain music
distribution from analogue to digital.
This research study has five objectives: firstly, to explore the challenges confronting the supply chain transition from analogue to digital music
distribution systems; secondly, to examine the
distribution operations processes for the digitalisation of music in relation to the effects of global market demand; thirdly, to evaluate the effects of supply chain value adding innovations in influencing digitalised music
distribution and consumption in the recording industry; fourthly, to establish the extent of technological viability to which the Diffusion of Innovation theory enhances supply chain
distribution competitiveness; and finally to assess the relative magnitude of supply chain competence and capability response to digital supply chain music
distribution. The researcher selected an exploratory research design to explore digital music
distribution in the South African recording industry. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis techniques are employed to analyse the data collected from 217 musicians.
This study reveals several elements arising from the growth of digital music
distribution in the Durban region, and makes a scholarly contribution to the promotion of the South African digital music market. The results provides support for: the disintermediation of physical retail stores which are perceived as the driver of digital music
distribution; an increase in the number of independent artists and music entrepreneurs; and technologically compatible media devices that encourage more music downloads. The tools provided by the Internet inspire musicians to engage in creative music innovation, thereby creating global competitive standards. The study’s recommendations provides further insight and understanding of the digital music
distribution sector.

The distribution relationships are subject to various legal obligations and regulations. These obligations rise mainly from contract law and competition law. However, other legal subject matters, such as labor law or corporate law could be involved. The contractual technique allows to meet these obligations. The European experience and more particularly the French one, have allowed to reveal identifiable contractual methods, mostly related to franchising agreements, concession agreements, approved or selective distribution agreements, and consolidation agreements between distributors. These specific distribution agreements aggregates with more general methods such as the sale deeds, the mandates, the commissions in addition to contractual techniques as the master agreement. The subject matter of this thesis is to estimate the transposition of these contractual methods and techniques in Tunisian law. The study and analysis of the rules governing distribution agreements and relationship between the different intervening parties, shall allow to systematize and set standards for distribution law in Tunisia.

▼ The knowledge of the critical loading point of a power system is essential to assess its voltage stability condition. This point is traditionally obtained through continuation power flows which are relatively accurate but requires a considerable amount of processing time.
In this work, the search for the critical loading point of a certain power system is formulated as a constrained optimization problem which is solved using a robust scheme known as the Dog-leg Trust Region. This technique is mainly characterized by its reliability and fast convergence as it makes advantage of the merits of classical optimization techniques and gets rid of their limitations.
The proposed method was examined on several test systems namely the IEEE14, IEEE39, IEEE57, and IEEE118-bus systems. Besides successfully identifying the maximum loading point of these systems the algorithm achieved a considerable saving in processing time when compared to the continuation power flow analysis of PSAT.

▼ We study a class of probability distributions on the positive real line, which arise by folding the classical Laplace
distribution around the origin. This is a two-parameter, flexible family with a sharp peak at the mode, very much in the spirit of the classical Laplace
distribution. We derive basic properties of the
distribution, which include the probability density function,
distribution function, quantile function, moments and several related parameters. Further properties related to mixture representation, Lorenz curve, hazard rate, and entropy are included as well. We also discuss parameter estimation for this new stochastic model and illustrate potential applications with oil price data.

Harmonic analysis is significant to effectively identify and help
eliminate the harmonic sources in the system and thereby guarantees
high levels of power quality. The research in this thesis focuses
on the improvement of the accuracy and reliability of harmonic
analysis in the power
distribution network. First, an iterative
observer-based algorithm is applied to harmonic estimation in the
real-time environment. Comparing with the traditional harmonic
estimation methods, the proposed algorithm goes beyond the
framework of fixed frequencies, which can estimate harmonics with
iteratively frequencies. Further, the analysis shows that the
proposed method solves the time-delay problem during observer
design for harmonic estimation. Second, the problem of harmonic
sources identification is investigated. All the possible
combinations of harmonic sources are carried out simultaneously in
the power
distribution network and consideration of time delays for
the observer gain design. Finally, a passive filter method is
presented for harmonic mitigation in power
distribution networks
with consideration of harmonic compensation. The parameters are
mostly obtained by the first two algorithms, which make the three
proposed methods to be a complete progress of harmonic analysis
based on the iterative observer.

▼ The Janzen-Connell hypothesis proposes that species-specific enemies promote species coexistence through distance- and density-dependent survival of offspring near conspecific adults. I tested this hypothesis experimentally by transplanting juvenile-sized fragments of two species of brooding corals varying distances from conspecific adults, and observationally by assessing the spatial
distribution of those two species in the field. Small fragments (as proxies for ?6 month old juveniles) of Pocillopora damicornis and Seriatopora hystrix were transplanted 3, 12, 24 and 182 cm upstream and downstream (relative to the prevailing current) of conspecific adults and their survivorship and condition (bitten off, overgrown by algae, or bleached) checked every 1-2 d. I also characterized the spatial
distribution of P. damicornis and S. hystrix within replicated plots on three Fijian reef flats and measured densities of small colonies within 2 m of larger colonies of each species.
Contrary to the Janzen-Connell hypothesis, juvenile-sized transplants exhibited no differences in survivorship as a function of distance from adult P. damicornis or S. hystrix and P. damicornis and S. hystrix were aggregated rather than overdispersed on natural reefs. Survival unaffected by distance from focal colonies as well as certain recruitment processes could generate the observed aggregation. I did observe predation of P. damicornis that was spatially patchy and temporally persistent due to feeding by the territorial triggerfish Balistapus undulatus. This patchy predation did not occur for S. hystrix. Thus, I found no support for the Janzen-Connell hypothesis, but did document hot-spots of species-specific corallivory that could create variable selective regimes on an otherwise more uniform environment, and help maintain the high diversity of corals typical of Indo-Pacific reefs.

▼ This dissertation studies the effects of inequality on macroeconomic policies. Inequality has become a very important issue, but there are few studies about the effects of inequality on monetary and fiscal policies. This dissertation attempts to fill this gap. The dissertation consists of three chapters.
Chapter 1, “Inequality and the Interwar Gold Standard” studies the relationship between inequality and the interwar gold standard. Many economic historians have argued that adherence to the gold standard was an important obstacle to recovery from the Great Depression. It is therefore important to understand the factors that affected a country’s determination to remain on gold. Many proximate determinants of adherence have been identified, including democracy, creditor status, sterling bloc membership and the structure of a country’s trade network. Here I explore a neglected but fundamental determinant: inequality. I find that countries with higher inequality at the start of the Great Depression remained on gold longer than countries with lower inequality. I conduct a survival analysis using two discrete time hazard models to test the effect of inequality on the probability of exiting gold for each country. The paper lays out the econometric evidence for this relationship and analyzes the underlying political economy that explains the relationship between inequality and adherence to the gold standard. Four detailed case studies of the relationship are provided: Australia, New Zealand, France and the U.S., four cases that illustrate the general proposition.
Chapter 2, “The Short-Run and Long-Run Effects of Inequality on Inflation in the United States” studies effects of inequality on inflation in the in the United States. It uses a wide range of inequality measures. The cointegration test provides evidence that there exists a long-run relationship between inequality and inflation in the United States. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) and impulse response function indicate that inequality has a negative effect on inflation in the long run, however, the short-run effect is not significant.
Chapter 3, “The Short-Run and Long-Run Effects of Inequality on Inflation- Panel Data Analysis” expands the dataset to several panels and studies the effects of inequality on inflation. It uses several panels of international data covering different periods and monetary regimes. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model shows a negative long-run relationship between inequality and inflation, and the Arellano-Bond GMM estimator reveals a negative causal effect running from inequality to inflation in the short run. The paper lays out the econometric evidence for these relationships and analyzes the underlying political economy that explains the relationships between inequality and inflation.

▼ Design and calibration of spreading equipment for agricultural materials are critically important but is facing some limitations in time and costs. Lack of personnel and environmental constraints, as well as equipment features present challenges in the calibration process and results. The major objective of this project was to introduce and investigate the feasibility of integration of automated electrical equipment into this calibration process in order to optimize the overall procedure in terms of cost, time and precision as an ultimate goal. Specific objectives focused on optical techniques as well as novel accelerometer technology. A photo based method in detection of collected grains based on counting of particles was investigated. Results from tests with three different grain particles showed that the sensor could be used in applications up to 20gr of collected materials in one pass. The sensor could detect multiple particles’ passage at the same time, but was unable to go further than a certain sample weight of 20, 30 and 60 grams for ammonium sulfate, rice and urea respectively while maintaining acceptable precision. In this regard, physical characteristics of the mentioned granular particles were also investigated to better address the importance of physical uniformity in this sensing system. A novel set of sensing plates based on accelerometer technology were introduced and the practicality of the sensors was tested using the standard setup for measurement of spreading patterns. A comparison between the outputs of a set of identical accelerometer plates showed a close estimate of the trend which could be achieved in the same deposition using the traditional dry calibration process. Moreover, the introduced sensor was highly flexible and could be adjusted in various ways in order to better match the application demands. In this regard, the proposed sensor was also tested at 10 and 20 degree angles with respect to the horizon and the results indicated almost twofold improvement in resolution from 595mV/g to 955mV/g at 10 and 20 degrees respectively. This novel accelerometer based technique may be practical for improved automation of calibration techniques.

▼ The Birnbaum-Saunders (BS)
distribution is a positively skewed
distribution and is a popular model for analyzing lifetime data. In this thesis, we first develop an improved method of estimation for the BS
distribution and the corresponding inference. Compared to the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and the modified moment estimators (MMEs), the proposed method results in estimators with smaller bias, but having the same mean squared errors (MSEs) as these two estimators. Next, the existence and uniqueness of the MLEs of the parameters of BS
distribution are discussed based on Type-I, Type-II and hybrid censored samples. In the case of five-parameter bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders (BVBS)
distribution, we use the distributional relationship between the bivariate normal and BVBS distributions to propose a simple and efficient method of estimation based on Type-II censored samples. Regression analysis is commonly used in the analysis of life-test data when
some covariates are involved. For this reason, we consider the regression problem based on BS and BVBS distributions and develop the associated inferential methods.
One may generalize the BS
distribution by using Laplace kernel in place of the normal kernel, referred to as the Laplace BS (LBS)
distribution, and it is one of the generalized Birnbaum-Saunders (GBS) distributions. Since the LBS
distribution has a close relationship with the Laplace
distribution, it becomes necessary to first carry out a detailed study of inference for the Laplace
distribution before studying the LBS
distribution. Several inferential results have been developed in the literature for the Laplace
distribution based on complete samples. However, research on Type-II censored samples is somewhat scarce and in fact there is no work on Type-I censoring. For this reason, we first start with MLEs of the location and scale parameters of Laplace
distribution based on Type-II and Type-I censored samples. In the case of Type-II censoring, we derive the exact joint and marginal moment generating functions (MGF) of the MLEs. Then, using these expressions, we derive the exact conditional marginal and joint density functions of the MLEs and utilize them to develop exact confidence intervals (CIs) for some life parameters of interest. In the case of Type-I censoring, we first derive explicit expressions for the MLEs of the parameters, and then derive the exact conditional joint and marginal MGFs and use them to derive the exact conditional marginal and joint density functions of the MLEs. These densities are used in turn to develop marginal and joint CIs for some quantities of interest.
Finally, we consider the LBS
distribution and formally show the different kinds of shapes of the probability density function (PDF) and the hazard function. We then derive the MLEs of the parameters and prove that they always exist and are unique. Next, we propose the MMEs, which can be used as initial values in the numerical computation of the MLEs. ▼ Distribution automation, demand response and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) are three important elements of modern smart
distribution grid. To achieve it, the real-time state estimate is required, and enable
distribution system operators to get more system operation information. Due to the high investment in these systems, this study aims at creating an added value of AMI in order to achieve rational investment and improve system operations. By using the customer power usage data from smart meter and operational data from supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), this thesis proposes two
distribution state estimation (DSE) techniques that can be used to set up a quasi-real-time model for
distribution management in order to improve voltage quality and power restoration dispatch, and reduce system losses and network congestion. The proposed dynamic state estimation can be used to forecast system states in every 15 minutes, and based on the data obtained,
distribution system operators can make informed decisions on load adjustment, voltage control and feeder reconfiguration.

▼ D.Ing.
This thesis considers water supply and divides the water supply environment into three categories; the macro water supply environment, the water supply scheme and the consumers. Each of the categories is briefly explored in terms of the factors that may influence it. Subsequently, some of the unique features of a bulk water distribution system are dealt with, as well as different approaches related to bulk water distribution system design and assessment. One of these approaches, the probabilistic approach, offers unique features to assess the reliability of a bulk water distribution system but requires that the probabilistic characteristics of the stochastic events be quantified. The above prompted the goal of this thesis; “…to assess and quantify the probabilistic characteristics of selected factors that may compromise bulk water distribution reliability”. The objectives set and dealt with in this thesis are: • Conducting a literature review that explores uncertainty, reliability, models and techniques, highlighting selected factors that may compromise bulk water distribution reliability, as well as bulk water distribution system water requirements. • Quantifying the probabilistic characteristics of water distribution pipeline failures. • Quantifying the probabilistic characteristics of pipeline failures caused by sinkholes in dolomitic areas. • Quantifying the probabilistic characteristics of power supply failures. This study provides a comprehensive summary of a range of uncertainties that may compromise bulk water distribution reliability. However, the greatest value added corresponds to the following: • It establishes a benchmark related to the probabilistic characteristics of pipeline failures for five pipeline material categories, related to pipeline failure rates and pipeline repair times. • A new methodology is developed in terms of which the probabilistic characteristics of pipeline failures caused by sinkholes in dolomitic areas can be quantified. • It provides a benchmark of the probabilistic characteristics of power supply failures at bulk water distribution pump stations. Proposals are made related to future research needs, divided into two categories: • Complementary research needs that will complement and enhance the work undertaken within this thesis. • Promotional research needs that will promote the practical application of the outcomes generated as part of this thesis.

▼ Financial data usually possess some characteristics, such as volatility clustering, asymmetry,
heavy and semi-heavy tails thus, making it difficult, if not impossible, to use
Normal
distribution to model them. Statistical analyzis shows that the Generalized
hyperbolic
distribution is appropriate for capturing these characteristics. This research
shows that the USD/ZAR, All shares, Gold mining as well as the the S&P
500 returns are best modeled with the Skew t, generalized hyperbolic, hyperbolic,
generalized hyperbolic distributions respectively based on AIC and Value-at-Risk
(VAR) backtesting. Further multivariate analyzis of these returns based on the kernel
smoothing goodness of fit shows that; the multivariate affine normal inverse gaussian
(MANIG)
distribution provides the best fit for the affine models. Likewise, the multivariate
normal inverse gaussian (MNIG)
distribution based on AIC provides the best
model for the four returns. Finally, the positive tail dependencies exhibited between
the All shares and Gold mining returns as well as All shares and S&P 500 returns is
best modeled with the Gumbel and Clayton copulas respectively. While the negative
dependencies between the USD/ZAR returns and other returns is modeled with the
Frank copula.

Dynamic power distribution management for all electric aircraft.

▼ In recent years, with the rapid development of electric and electronic
technology, the All-Electric Aircraft (AEA) concept has attracted more and
more attention, which only utilizes the electric power instead of conventional
hydraulic and pneumatic power to supply all the airframe systems. To meet the
power requirements under various flight stages and operating conditions, the
AEA approach has resulted in the current aircraft electrical power generation
capacity up to 1.6 MW. To satisfy the power quality and stability requirements,
the advanced power electronic interfaces and more efficient power distribution
systems must be investigated. Moreover, with the purpose of taking the full
advantages of available electrical power, novel dynamic power distribution
management research and design for an AEA must be carried out.
The main objective of this thesis is to investigate and develop a methodology
of more efficient power distribution management with the purpose of
minimizing the rated power generating capacity and the mass of the electrical
power system (EPS) including the power generation system and the power
distribution system in an AEA. It is important to analyse and compare the
subsistent electrical power distribution management approaches in current
aircraft. Therefore the electrical power systems of A320 and B777, especially
the power management system, will be discussed in this thesis.
Most importantly the baseline aircraft, the Flying Crane is the outcome of the
group design project. The whole project began in March 2008, and ended in
September 2010, including three stages: conceptual design, preliminary
design and detailed design. The dynamic power distribution management
research is based on the power distribution system of the Flying Crane.
The main task of the investigation is to analyse and manage the power usage
among and inside typical airframe systems by using dynamic power
distribution management method. The characteristics and operation process of
these systems will be investigated in detail and thoroughly. By using the
method of dynamic power distribution management, all the electrical
consumers and sub-systems powered by electricity are managed effectively.
The performance of an aircraft can be improved by reducing the peak load
requirement on board. Furthermore, the electrical system architecture,
distributed power distribution system and the dynamic power distribution
management system for AEA are presented. Finally, the mass of the whole
electrical power system is estimated and analysed carefully.
