▼ China government issued policy to encourage the development of fab-less IC design house. It will re-form the world-wide market landscape. Currently, Qualcomm, Mediatek and Hisilicon are representatives in the top-3 IC design clusters, U.S., Taiwan and China. Their revenues are 17B, 4.5B, 0.95B USD in 2013, respectively. However, the CAGR of revenue is much higher in China region and the forecasted sum-up revenue will possibly surpass the number of Taiwan region in 2015. In additions, China government also issued policy to encourage display panel makers, BOE, China Star, CEC-Panda and Tianma expanding capacity. Again, it will re-form the ecosystem of world-wide display panel industry. We wonder that China display driver fab-less IC design house will boom or not after the growing local panel capacity. The research is subjected to study the scenarios of China display driver fab-less IC design house in the coming future. It takes reference fromthe theories of Michael Porterâs diamond model and competitive strategy. The research analyzes diamond model of Taiwanese display driver IC design house. Panel makers such as AUO, Innolux had brought a lot of demands to display driver IC design house. The head-to-head competition between driver IC companies, Novatek, Himax, Orise, Ilitek, Sitronix and Raydium had pushed these venders to enforce any weakness themselves. Firm strategies are variety, competition structure is complete and rivalry is severe. Benchmark of yearly fiscal performance on these companies even can explicitly and quantitatively interpret competitiveness. The related and supporting industries are also strong in Taiwan. All the supply chain companies, foundry makers: TSMC, UMC, VIS; gold bump houses: Chipbond, ChipMOS and testing houses: KYEC. Ardentec, had made Taiwanese driver IC design even stronger. The diamond model in China is also discussed. Michael Porterâs competitive strategy theory is applied to simulate the coming scenarios that China display driver IC design house will face. The research concludes that China display driver IC design house will take the advantage of governmentâs policy support. Recently, many panel-makes had expanded a lot of capacity and therefore bring local opportunity of huge demands. Existed IC design houses, Focaltech, G-core and Solomon started to invest more resource to enable driver IC production line. The factor conditions such as human resource, knowledge gap will then be improved under continuously financial support. The scenario is so-called healthy cycle of diamond model. Even though, the growing China driver IC design house will suffer many challenges from exited world-wide NO. 1 companies in Taiwan. Therefore, the proposed best strategies are âFOCUSâ and âCOST LEADERSHIPâ. Vender may choose either one of key panel makers, BOE, China Star, CEC-Panda or Tianma to collaborate with. ▼ Due to advances in the use of liquid crystal display (LCD) technology is increasingly common, and the rapid development of optoelectronics industry plays an important role in Taiwan's economic development. But the production of liquid crystal display material indium tin oxide relies heavily on imports, so recycling indium from waste liquid crystal display is a more economical way. This study compared the use of traditional extraction with microwave extraction of indium. In traditional extraction reaction temperature 100 â, reaction time 60 min, 5N hydrochloric acid concentration and solid-liquid ratio 4, the extraction have close to 100 percent. Under microwave conditions add DEPHA extracting agent to improve the overall extraction efficiency, but we found that the addition of glass powder produced DEPHA will reunite phenomenon. It cause the powderâs surface area greatly reduce, so that hydrochloric acid canât be on the indium tin oxide powder replace to liquid. Since DEPHA was originally used for the extraction solution after the displacement step, therefore, this study will be combined with the extraction agent to observe the effectiveness of microwave extraction. Thus, this stage is not to add more suitable DEPHA. Add 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquid is expected to increase the overall efficiency of extraction under microwave conditions, but the study found that the addition of ionic liquids compared with no significant effect on extraction efficiency. The reason is presumably at a higher temperature ionic liquid with an acid to lose its properties, it caused the extraction efficiency and not added ionic liquids with no difference. And the study is expected to be ionic liquids recovery experiment, however, the ionic liquid after reaction, acid combined with a homogeneous. Unable to use centrifugal separation mode, so the results of this study found that adding ionic liquids are not suitable for extraction. Under microwave conditions at the reaction temperature 90 â, reaction time 15min, solid-liquid ratio 4 and the concentration of hydrochloric acid 4N are close to 100% extraction efficiency. In this study, the microwave extraction time can be greatly reduced to about 4 times and the concentration of hydrochloric acid can not only reduce from 5N to 4N, but also reduce operating costs. ▼ Modern sonar systems have greatly improved their sensor technology and processing techniques, but little effort has been put into display design for sonar data. The enormous amount of acoustic data presented by the traditional frequency versus time display can be overwhelming for a sonar operator to monitor and analyze. The recent emphasis placed on networked underwater warfare also requires the operator to create and maintain awareness of the overall tactical picture in order to improve overall effectiveness in communication and sharing of critical data. In addition to regular sonar tasks, sonobuoy system operators must manage the deployment of sonobuoys and ensure proper functioning of deployed sonobuoys. This thesis examines an application of the Ecological Interface Design framework in the interface design of a sonobuoy system on board a maritime patrol aircraft. Background research for this thesis includes a literature review, interviews with subject matter experts, and an analysis of the decision making process of sonar operators from an information processing perspective. A work domain analysis was carried out, which yielded a dual domain model: the domain of sonobuoy management and the domain of tactical situation awareness address the two different aspects of the operator's work. Information requirements were drawn from the two models, which provided a basis for the generation of various unique interface concepts. These concepts covered both the needs to build a good tactical picture and manage sonobuoys as physical resources. The later requirement has generally been overlooked by previous sonobuoy interface designs. A number of interface concepts were further developed into an integrated display prototype for user testing. Demos created with the same prototype were also delivered to subject matter experts for their feedback. While the evaluation means are subjective and limited in their ability to draw solid comparisons with existing sonobuoy displays, positive results from both user testing and subject matter feedback indicated that the concepts developed here are intuitive to use and effective in communicating critical data and supporting the user’s awareness of the tactical events simulated. Subject matter experts also acknowledged the potential for these concepts to be included in future research and development for sonobuoy systems. This project was funded by the Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS) from Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the sponsorship of Humansystems Inc. at Guelph, Ontario.

▼ Around 20% of all automobile crashes in recent years have been linked to driver distraction or inattention. A subset of these crashes, involve “Looked But Failed to See” (LBFTS) incidents in which an otherwise attentive driver completely fails to notice a salient signal. In the best case, this may involve a driver putting on the brakes late because she failed to notice a red light and stopping with her nose into an intersection, causing embarrassment but no harm. But in the worst case, looking but failing to see causes about 6% of all injury and fatality-related crashes per data from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) maintained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). LBTFS are a type of inattentional blindness, a subset of inattentional insensitivity. Inattentional insensitivity is a blanket term that describes the well-known phenomena of inattentional blindness and inattentional deafness. These phenomena occur when an otherwise salient stimulus is missed during high levels of perceptual load. For example, pilots coming in for a difficult landing in high cross winds miss auditory alarms notifying them of a landing gear failure, or drivers lost at night on an unfamiliar route fail to see a stop sign. It is hypothesized that inattentional insensitivity is integrally tied to an individual’s working memory capacity. Previous studies have proposed theoretical accounts involving both single and dual routes for this relationship. A major goal of this dissertation is to determine which of these theoretical explanations best predict patterns of inattentional insensitivity. A second goal of this dissertation is to address methods of ameliorating inattentional insensitivity, regardless of their cause, via the design of effective, multimodal alert systems. Towards the second goal, the first study, details an investigation of multimodal urgency scaling with the goal of determining perceived changes in urgency relative to physical changes in visual, auditory and tactile stimuli. Psychometric functions were obtained for various parameters within each modality based on perceptions of urgency, annoyance and acceptability. Results indicated that auditory stimuli affected the biggest increases in urgency relative to physical changes, but that with increased urgency often came increased annoyance. Visual stimuli were rarely rated as annoying but were also unable to achieve similarly high levels of urgency relative to auditory or tactile stimuli. Tactile stimuli showed the greatest utility (indicating greater urgency changes in relation to annoyance changes). The second study, was designed to validate the psychometric functions established in the first study by examining behavioral responses to warnings designed to be perceived as highly urgent and time critical versus warnings missing key parameters within the context of driving. ▼ Design processes for engineered systems are resource intensive and have a significant impact on a product’s profitability. Over half of a product’s total costs can be attributed to design stage decisions. The development of product designs often involves creating complex 3D models in a 2D environment, a non-trivial task. Current design workflows involve the utilization of robust modeling software on a 2D display. However, previous research highlights the benefits of visualizing full-scale 3D models in an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment. These environments aid a user in understanding complex 3D geometry. Despite the benefits of VR, these systems have traditionally been large and costly, preventing widespread implementation within companies. However, the commercial availability of high-fidelity, commodity VR Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) provides an opportunity to explore the potential benefits this technology may bring to engineering design. This paper details a proof of concept VR environment displayed in a commodity HMD; specifically, the HTC Vive. The environment supports creation of full-scale 3D product geometry at the conceptual phase of a design process. The environment contains a World-in-Miniature (WIM) model for enhanced interaction and usability. WIM manipulation allows a user to modify full-scale geometry by adjusting corresponding parts on the miniature model. Free-form mesh deformation was also implemented to provide designers with flexibility and efficiency not found in traditional design packages. Vital design metrics (e.g., cost, weight, and center of mass) were incorporated to allow a user to perform preliminary design analysis to assess product feasibility. The environment was designed to provide an intuitive user interface with only a subset of features found in traditional design packages, tailored to conceptual design needs. This work aims to be a building block for the fruition of a conceptual design environment in immersive VR, motivated by proposed benefits of such a scenario. The design environment in this work is not intended to replace traditional Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages, but rather to enhance the conceptual design phase by providing conceptual designers with a system optimized for the task at hand. Throughout the development process, unique challenges and affordances associated with commodity HMDs were identified, explored, and detailed in this work.

▼ Online trading market plays a more and more important role in today’s economic activities. Its success in business is not possible with the design of trading platforms. As an attempt to boost transaction, platforms like Amazon or eBay in US, Alibaba in China, etc. designed tools to reveal seller’s reliability, facilitate communication between sellers and buyers, deliberate the display of products, etc. This thesis looks at some of the online trading platform’s design and its implication on buyer and seller’s choice as well as the platform’s proﬁt. The analysis contains both theoretical and empirical work. ❧ The ﬁrst chapter looks at the design of platform’s quality signaling, often referred to as the reputation system. I look at Alibaba’s platform where both centralized and decentralized quality signals are used. In the chapter, I empirically examine how consumers interpret the quality signals and make purchasing decisions based on beliefs of product quality. Specifically, I examine whether different quality signals work as substitute or compliments. The demand is estimated both in the game-theoretic framework and non-game-theoretic framework. ❧ The second chapter looks at the platform’s design of reputation system on participating seller’s pricing strategy. From previous chapter and earlier literature, we know buyers are more likely to buy from high rating scores sellers, but sellers’ behavior to affect rating scores is less clear. In this paper, I take advantage of Alibaba’s unique design of rating scores system for identification. The design awards sellers both on quality and sales: given quality or probability of receiving good ratings, the more the sellers sale, the faster they can accumulate rating scores. Based on this observation, I build a single agent dynamic pricing model to capture the sellers’ incentive to manage rating scores. The seller’s pricing affect both current period proﬁt and rating scores in the future. As a result, sellers are willing to undercut prices for rating scores dynamic concerns. Besides, for estimation, sellers are assumed to have two types of service quality. The mixed type model is estimated by nested ﬁxed point algorithm. I conﬁrm that demand is shifted to sellers with high rating scores and having more sales can accelerate rating score accumulation, implying sellers have incentive to manage rating scores. From counter factual analysis, the prices will be 0.1-1% higher if the sellers do not care rating score dynamics. The ﬁndings conﬁrm the effectiveness of Alibaba’s design of its rating score system. ❧ The third chapter looks at the platform’s arrangement to display products of asymmetric ﬁtness. This is a coauthered paper with Lin Liu. We are interested in how the display order will affect consumer’s choice, participating seller’s competition and the platform’s proﬁts. ▼ Research on interventions aimed to promote energy savings has shown support for direct feedback using in-home displays (IHDs) to reduce energy consumption. These displays are electronic devices that provide real-time energy information and are emerging as an effective tool to communicate with people about their energy consumption. How feedback is presented to people and how they understand the meaning of such feedback largely depends on the design of the display, yet there are relatively few studies that investigate the way in which the display can best be designed to present energy information and motivate energy-saving behaviour. Further, even though there is a wide range of variations in the visual presentation of feedback, there is a lack of focus on the process of optimising the IHD design. This thesis aims to address the need for designing IHDs at the display component level, by examining three types of display design (numerical displays, analogue displays using speedometer dials, and ambient displays using emotional faces) in both laboratory-based computer-simulated experiments and field-based experiments: participants’ abilities to detect changes in energy information shown on the computer-simulated displays were measured by means of accuracy rate and response time, and their subjective preferences for display types were assessed against experimental data; live energy data were displayed using the three design types in a student residence at the University of Bath to see how they would influence energy-use behaviour. Results from the laboratory experiments demonstrated that both accuracy rate and response time for seeing changes in the information displayed were strongly associated with the type of display design. Participants preferred numerical display and were better at detecting changes in information with this display than with the other two. Conversely, the student residence experiments showed that when participants’ attention was divided in a household setting, there was no difference in energy consumption among experimental groups who received information from any of the three display types. However, these experimental groups used significantly less energy compared with control groups, who had no displays installed. It was concluded that 1) the mere presence of a display device could influence people’s behaviour, regardless of the type of display design, people’s preferences or the level of user engagement with the display, although there was a strong indication that the ambient design worked better than the other two designs at an arbitrary statistical significance level of 0.95, and 2) subjective preferences and computer-simulated studies are poor guides to the actual performance of IHDs in real-world settings. This work helps establish how IHDs can be designed and the influence that they may have on people’s energy-consumption behaviour. The development of novel biological parts is a core principle of synthetic biology, as expanding the biological 'tool-kit' opens up new possibilities for the production of novel tools, pathways and compounds. Antibodies demonstrate high antigen affinity and specificity, making them ideal candidates for the development of novel synthetic biology tools. However full length antibodies require post-translational modifications that prevent their use in prokaryotic chassis, such as Escherichia coli, which are commonly used for synthetic biology applications. Single domain antibodies (sdAb), such as heavy chain variable domains (VHH) of camelid heavy chain only antibodies (HCAb), demonstrate improved stability and robustness when compared to conventional recombinant antibodies whilst retaining high antigen affinity and specificity. Furthermore, sdAb such as VHH are also capable of binding 'cryptic' epitopes on the target antigen, such as those that occur within clefts and cavities. As a result, these recombinant antibody fragments are ideally positioned for initial investigations into their use as tools for synthetic biology applications. This thesis describes the generation of, and subsequent investigations into, VHH with functionalities relating to the production of monoterpenoids in E. coli. First, a VHH phage display library was constructed and subsequently enriched against Streptomyces clavuligerus linalool synthase (bLinS). Next, Design of Experiments (DoE) was used to construct and optimise a platform that facilitated the production of VHH in the cytoplasm of E. coli, such that these recombinant antibody fragments may be utilised for synthetic biology applications. Finally, the ability of three anti-bLinS VHH to modulate the production of monoterpenoids in E. coli containing a heterologous linalool production pathway was investigated, revealing that these anti-bLinS VHH were capable of altering the flux within the pathway, thereby altering the profile of the terpenoid products obtained. As such, the platforms developed in this project, and the insights gained following their implementation, represent a foundation upon which further investigations and developments may build, so as to realise the full potential of VHH antibodies as powerful tools in the field of synthetic biology. ▼ This present study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of two types of school library displays: a display with books only, called Display, and a display with books, posters, models, copy, and realia, called Display +. The effectiveness of these displays was to be measured in two ways: a) through the observation of the attaction power, holding power and viewer participation in a display and b) through measuring the circulation of displayed books. Before commencing the study a literature search was conducted. The result of the literature search yielded four authors, Goldhor (1972; 1981), Aguilar (1983), Watson (1985), and Baker (1986), who had researched the relationship between circulation and displays. Each of these studies used the measurable effect of circulation increasing, decreasing or remaining constant to determine the effect of the display. This present study used a similar methodology and monitored the circulation of books on both types of displays. However, this study sought to go beyond the effect of circulation in determining the effectiveness of displays because the previous studies had not taken into account the library user who is affected by the display but is unable to borrow a book from the display. The literature search turned towards the area of museum exhibits and displays and the methodology employed to evaluate these exhibits and displays. Shettel (1968), Warren (1972), Screven (1976), Linn (1976), Clowes and Wolfe (1980), and Miles (1982) used attraction and holding power as measures of museum exhibit and display effectiveness. Similarly, library users can be attracted and their attention held by library displays. To the variables of attraction and holding power this study added the variable of participation, picking up books or other items in the display not necessarily with the intent of borrowing the books. In order to construct a Display + and control as far as possible the elements in the display a literature search of books and articles relating to the design elements of displays was conducted, and findings applied in the construction of the display. Shettel's (1968) methodology of unobtrusive observation was employed in this study with the added benefit of videotaping the observations. The hypotheses were set out in three groups, those relating to a single display, those comparing the effectiveness of Display and Display +, and those relating to circulation. The results of this study found in general that the attraction power of Display + exceeded the attraction power of Display but the holding power and participation in Display was greater than that of Display + indicating that the designer of library displays should pay particular attention to the purpose of displays in their libraries. With the growth of ubiquitous computing, people are getting familiar and receptive to the idea of using non personal devices in public spaces. An example of such a possible device are the large ambient displays which can be found in airports, subway stations, malls, and bus stops. While most of these devices are not interactive, some offer interaction through touchscreen. This study explored the impact of body-movement-based interaction on engagement of a peripheral information display. We developed and exhibited two versions of the same peripheral information display in a public space. The first version offered interactivity while no interaction was available in the second version. We counted the number of people who watched/interacted with the displays and timed how long they spent doing so. Qualitative data was also gathered through semi structured interviews and non-participant observations. The statistical analysis provide evidences that the mean time spent watching/interacting with the peripheral information display is higher when there is interaction. We are 95% confident that the interval from 0.25 to 13.71 seconds contains the difierence of mean time spent watching/interacting with the display between the two versions. The interviews and observations indicated that the interaction implemented is easily understandable by the public in few seconds without the need of instructions.

Ett exempel på en sådan enhet är dom stora bildskärmar som placerats på flygplatser, tunnelbanestationer, köpcenter och busshållplatser. Dom flesta av dessa är inte interaktiva, men några är interaktiva genom touch. Denna studie utforskar effekten av kroppsrörelse-baserat interaktion på människors engagemang med perifera informationsskärmar. Vi utvecklade och ställde ut två versioner av en informationsskärm i ett offentligt rum. Den första versionen var interaktiv medans den andra var statisk. Vi räknade antalet människor som uppmärksammade/interagerade med informationsskärmen och tog tiden på hur länge dom eventuellt stannade. Kvalitativ data samlades genom intervjuer genom semistrukturerade intervjuer och icke-deltagande observationer. Statistisk analys av data ger underlag för att säga att medelvärdet för tid spenderat framför informationsskärmen var högre när den var interaktiv. Med ett konfidensintervall på 95% slår vi fast att skillnaden i medelvärde för tid spenderat engagerad med informationsskärmen ligger mellan 0,25 och 13,71 sekunder för dom två versionerna. Intervjuer och observationer pekar mot att den implementerade interaktionen är lätt att förstå inom loppet av några få sekunder utan behov av instruktioner.

▼ Computational protein design has recently advanced to a new era with the de novo design of stable proteins targeting native protein ligands. In this dissertation, I will present the first de novo protein binder with an all beta interface targeting the T cell receptor, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1). Expressed on activated T cells, PD-1 inhibits T cell function and proliferation to prevent an excessive immune response. Tumor cells often take advantage of this pathway by over-expressing one of the ligands of PD-1, PD-L1 or PD-L2, to evade immune destruction. Additionally, impairment of the PD-1 pathway through a variety of mechanisms can lead to autoimmunity. Using a combination of computational design and experimental approaches, we have developed a de novo miniprotein that specifically binds PD-1 at the ligand interface. This protein binds murine PD-1 at a Kd of approximately 1 µM on yeast. The apo crystal structure shows that the binder folds as designed with a backbone RMSD of 1.3 Å to the design model. The 4.5 kDa protein proved to be very stable by chemical denaturation in GuHCl likely due to its three disulfide bonds. Over the years, I have identified several other binders using the canonical method of yeast surface display that ultimately had to be abandoned because of their inability to be produced as soluble proteins. I hypothesize this results from the use of the highly expressed native yeast protein Aga2p for display of the protein-of-interest (POI) on the cell surface. Here, I present a new method that replaces the Aga2p fusion with a minimal tag for covalent capture of the secreted protein and takes advantage of the natural yeast quality control pathways to discriminate between misfolded and well-folded proteins. This novel secretion capture system is a powerful tool for the screening, optimization, and production of well-expressed, functional proteins. Improved high-throughput methods for screening and optimizing stable, functional proteins enable generation of de novo binders that are more readily amenable to a variety of applications. The small, hyperstable PD-1 binding domain presented here has potential use in a variety of cancer and autoimmune therapy platforms. Advisors/Committee Members: Baker, David (advisor).

▼ Children who are unable to use spoken language to meet their communication needs often benefit from aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The design of the visual display may influence the ability of the child to communicate effectively. A display that supports efficient visual processing may facilitate success, whereas a display that is not optimal may create unintended barriers to success. However, there is limited evidence guiding clinical decision-making regarding visual display design. This is especially true regarding clinical practices targeted at supporting syntactically correct multi-symbol constructions. Clinicians often arrange symbols in groupings by part of speech as well as color-code the symbol background. In order to address this research to practice gap, the current study implemented a 2 x 2 factorial design to investigate the influence of symbol arrangement and background color on response time and task accuracy. The experiment measured the response time and accuracy of children with typical development, ages 3 ½ to 7 years as they used symbols to repeat spoken sentences. Participants received an auditory-visual stimulus (e.g., spoken sentence matching a photograph) and then touched the symbols within a 4 x 4 array that represented the stimuli. The participants completed the task across four conditions that varied the presence and absence of symbol arrangement and background color. A grammaticality judgment task assessed participants’ metalinguistic awareness to determine if this skill moderated the relationship between the features and outcome measures. Symbol arrangement influenced responding, in the participants under age 5. These participants were faster and more accurate when using displays that had symbol arrangement than when using displays that did not have symbol arrangement. Additionally, individual level analyses illustrated the younger participants (under age 5) were on average 4.3 seconds faster when using displays with symbol arrangement as opposed to no symbol arrangement. As a group, younger participants demonstrated greater accuracy when symbols had a white background compared to colored background. Children over 5 years old demonstrated no effects of symbol arrangement or background color. This dissertation discusses the results, theoretical implications, clinical implications, and directions for future research.
