▼ The international debate on human trafficking dates back to the 1980s and 1990s when human trafficking was not envisioned outside of the perimeter of prostitution within international law and was sparked by the feminist protests against gender-based violence. Human trafficking is still regarded as a rapidly growing social phenomenon within the current globalised world. Trafficking of persons refers to the recruitment, transportation, harbouring or receipt of persons through the use of coercion or force for the purpose of exploitation. Therefore, political actors, civil society which incorporates counter-human trafficking non-governmental organizations have emerged within the human rights debate, advocating different views and interests. Nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) are increasingly active internationally in organising initiatives around raising awareness in the interests of the most vulnerable groups as well as challenging public policy and legal frameworks. Due to NGOs maintaining different agendas, there is a battle for power positions within their own frameworks as to what constitutes to human rights violations. In terms of the use and misuse of power, particularly discursive and political power, previous research highlighted that states often use typical depictions of the crime in impoverished and developing areas to raise awareness. These intentions often carry a political aim and/or interest blurring the roles of counter-human trafficking NGOs. However, there is still insufficient research on the different roles these NGOs actually play in counter-human trafficking within the South African context. It is therefore on this basis that the following dissertation discusses the role counter-human trafficking NGOs play in combatting human trafficking in South Africa. The dissertation further assesses factors which impact the role of these NGOs. Lastly, the dissertation investigates the role of discursive power on human trafficking and counter-human trafficking NGOs in South Africa. The research is guided through a qualitative empirical research design and a conceptual framework of power. NGOs play a significant role in assisting the South African government with combatting human trafficking despite the many challenges they face which adversely impacts their efficacy. Their experiential knowledge should be leveraged more effectively by government role-players, and their critical voices should not be silenced in the fight against trafficking in persons. Na visão de Michel Foucault, o discurso pode ser compreendido como todo conjunto de enunciados que estão em regularidade uns com os outros, tendo em comum a mesma produção de sentidos e estando inseridos na mesma formação discursiva. Toda forma de linguagem que se realiza em um ato de comunicação oral, pictórica ou escrita será disseminadora de discursos, e estes discursos estão atrelados ao contexto sócio-histórico em que as materialidades discursivas são produzidas. Desta forma, uma vez que as histórias do personagem de ficção Super-Homem constituem produção discursiva, elas refletem as relações de poder e os jogos de verdade que estão em operação na sociedade em que são veiculadas. Em nosso estudo, tomando como referenciais saberes inscritos na disciplina Análise do Discurso (AD) e os princípios de proliferação e apropriação dos discursos, propostos por Foucault, bem como as noções de jogos de verdade e relações de poder na perspectiva foulcaultiana, analisamos um corpus constituído por histórias do personagem Super-Homem através das quais foram difundidos discursos que circularam nos Estados Unidos em momentos históricos marcados por mudanças nas relações de poder. Evidenciamos, por meio de nossas análises, que estas histórias do Super-Homem, embora originalmente inseridas em uma formação discursiva de resistência ao poder exercido pela classe dominante, transitaram para uma formação discursiva que alinha discursos de suporte aos posicionamentos político-ideológicos do Estado norte-americano, passando a refletir a postura da própria América perante seu povo e o mundo. A investigação de como se deu esse processo de transição dos discursos do Super-Homem nos levou à conclusão de que qualquer produção discursiva, mesmo uma aparentemente inócua como as histórias de um herói dos quadrinhos, constitui elemento estratégico nas disputas pelo poder entre classes sociais antagônicas.

In the view of Michel Foucault, the discourse can be understood as any set of statements that are in regularity with each other, while sharing the same production of meanings and being inserted in the same discursive formation. Any form of language that takes place in an act of oral, pictorial or written communication will disseminate discourses, and those discourses are associated to the socio historical context in which the discursive materiality is produced. Thus, since the stories of the fictional character Superman are discursive production, they reflect the relations of power and games of truth that exist in the society where they are produced. In this paper, we analyzed a corpus formed by stories of the fictional character Superman taking as reference knowledge of the discipline Discourse Analysis (DA) and the principles of proliferation and appropriation of the discourses, as proposed by Foucault, as well as the notions of games of truth and relations of power in a foucaultian perspective. O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender a possibilidade e os desdobramentos do que percebemos como uma forma diferente de abordagem da história, que privilegia a categoria de acontecimento em sua composição. Para tal, escolhemos verificar sua operacionalidade através da obra de Michel Foucault partindo de uma leitura que explicita as relações entre os domínios do discursivo e do não-discursivo para dar conta das modificações trazidas por sua acontecimentalização da história. Pretendemos, desta maneira, analisar uma especificidade decorrente desta construção teórica que visa realizar uma história do presente: a configuração do poder pastoral a partir da problemática da condução e sua relação com o diagnóstico foucaultiano da Insurreição Iraniana de 1979.

L‟objectif de ce mémoire est de comprendre la possibilité et les développements de ce dont nous percevons comme une forme différente d‟aborder l‟histoire, celle qui privilégie la catégorie d‟événement dans sa composition. Pour soutenir cette idée, nous avons choisi de vérifier son opérabilité à travers l‟oeuvre de Michel Foucault en partant d‟une lecture qui rend explicites les relations entre les domaines du discursif et du non-discursif pour faire état des modifications acquises par son « événementialisation » de l‟histoire. Nous prétendons donc analyser une spécificité qui résulte de cette construction théorique qui vise à réaliser une histoire du présent : la configuration du pouvoir pastoral à partir de la problématique de sa conduction et sa relation avec le diagnostic foucaldien de l‟insurrection iranienne de 1979.

The aim of this thesis is to understand the possibility and developments of what we perceive as a differentway of approaching history, one that gives privilege to the category of event in its composition. To achieve this, we have chosen to check its operational plausibility in the work of Michel Foucault based on a reading that makes explicit the relations between the domains of the discursive and the non-discursive. Our objective is to give an account of the modifications brought out by his eventalization of history. We thus aim to analyse a specific result stemming from the theoretical construction whose purpose is to accomplish a history of the present: the configuration of pastoral power as based on the problematic of its conduction and its relation to the Foucauldian diagnosis of the Iranian Insurrection of 1979.

▼ Abstract: The pedagogical dimension of Ethnomathematics runs through and is treated/aproached by a large number of research works in this field considerated pluri and transdisciplinary. And in several of this works we find pedagogical actions guided by Ethnomathematics being developed in different school contexts of different Brazilian cultural and geographic spaces. The focus of this research is to understand how the participants of these actions are constituted and how they act within the discursive practices and within the power relations that mobilize and/or produce these actions. The thesis that moves/drives this study deals with the understanding that the discourses that mobilized and/or were (re)signified by the researchers when they developed pedagogic actions guided by Ethnomathematics, - as well as the power relations that produce and make move these discourses -, operate to produce certain subject-positions not only for the teacher and the student, but also for the people who are part of the sociocultural groups involved. Thesis that raises two analytical questions: (a) Principal question: from a discursive analytic, how these subjects and these pedagogical actions guided by Ethnomathematics operate in certain modes but not others?; (b) Secundary question: what knowledge (inclusive that knowledge identified as mathematics) are produced or mobilized on/by discourses and in/by power relations and how do they participate or contribute to working/constitution of these subjects? Thus, the analytical corpus of this research is composed by some of these works, which were selected from a broader set. As a theoretical-methodological resource, I turn to a discursive analytic, mainly in a Foucaultian perspective, which was constituted itself along various movements in this Thesis. As a conclusion, always partial and in construction, I was able to perceive certain statements that emerge from a discursiveness that mobilizes/crosses these pedagogical actions guided by Ethnomathematics and that, driven by both epistemological and subjective-positional purposes, this actions enable the existence of a conduction practice of the subject actions. This practice contributes, in its turn, to the constitution/production and working of certain subject-positions marked (or demarcate) within the discursive practices and power relations inherent in these pedagogical actions, producing also certain (pedagogical, curricular) knowledges to the ways in which knowledge identified as mathematicians should be mobilized. ▼ In the United States, cross-sector partnerships, a form of collaboration, are becoming increasingly common in practice (Gray & Purdy, 2018). However, questions remain regarding the effectiveness of these partnerships and if the many challenges of using them can be overcome. In particular, the intersection of cross-sector partnerships and power, which can deeply impact these partnerships, needs more attention. This study used interpretive phenomenology to understand, from the participant perspective, (a) the experience and construction of power, (b) the impact of power on participants, and (c) how power dynamics in these initiatives compare to dynamics in organizations. Seventeen participants from four homelessness-focused Collective Impact (CI) initiatives, a popular cross-sector partnership model, were interviewed about their experiences. In addition, I reviewed key documents about each initiative. Data was interpreted using a variety of theoretical lenses, including critical theory, as well as my own work experience in this area, and carefully analyzed through iterative re-engagement, reflexivity, and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that power presented in six different ways: resources, structures and processes, identity, resistance, formal leadership, and framing and communication. When examining the differences between collaborations, differences in these six areas, as well as the identity and ways of operating of the partner who began the partnership, seemed to influence the experience of power. Financial resources were a dominant form of power and provided some partners with disproportionate influence. Dominant partners were also able to stack power across these six areas. The impacts of power dynamics were largely negative. Other significant findings included that some partners did not experience power at all. Critical theory and positive framing may explain this outcome. I call for an expanded CI model with a sixth condition related to power. As part of this sixth condition, I suggest communities make structural changes, such as, to honor discursive power more effectively, putting consumers in positions of power and rotating facilitation responsibilities. The present doctoral thesis, following the epistemological approach of social constructionism, attempts to examine the way that the non interventive therapeutic stance is performed by post-modern therapists, both in the context of therapeutic interaction, and in out-of-session conversational contexts, such as interviews and conference presentations. Drawing on the methodological approaches of discursive psychology and critical discursive social psychology, this therapeutic stance is not regarded as an intrinsic characteristic of the therapist, but as a rhetorical construct which is performed in the context of therapeutic dialogue and has specific macro-social consequences. The research data are derived from transcribed Milan systemic family therapy sessions and its transformations, semi-structured therapist interviews and presentations by the recognized therapist Harlene Anderson. Considering the rhetorical and ideological consequences of the interactive contexts of participants, it seems that the participants' discourse is formed around a bipolar, with one pole referring to the acknowledgment of the equal participation of all members in the therapeutic dialogue and the other to the recognition of therapy as an institutional process. As therapists move from one pole to another during interaction with their interlocutors, trying to find a difficult balance between authority and equality, it seems that in the context of postmodern therapy, these two poles are the two sides of the same coin, as each pole is used to perform its opposite.

Η παρούσα διατριβή αντλώντας από την επιστημολογική προσέγγιση του κοινωνικού κονστρουξιονισμού, επιχειρεί να εξετάσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο επιτελείται η μη παρεμβατική θεραπευτική στάση των μεταμοντέρνων θεραπευτών, τόσο στο εδώ και τώρα της θεραπευτικής αλληλεπίδρασης, όσο και σε συνομιλιακά πλαίσια εκτός συνεδριών, όπως είναι οι συνεντεύξεις και οι παρουσιάσεις σε συνέδρια. Μέσα από την αξιοποίηση των μεθοδολογικών προσεγγίσεων της λογοψυχολογίας και της κριτικής λογο- κοινωνιοψυχολογίας, η συγκεκριμένη στάση δεν προσεγγίζεται ως ένα εσωτερικό χαρακτηριστικό του θεραπευτή, αλλά ως μία ρητορική κατασκευή οποία επιτελείται στο πλαίσιο του θεραπευτικού διαλόγου και επιφέρει συγκεκριμένες μακροκοινωνικές συνέπειες. Τα δεδομένα της έρευνας προήλθαν από μετεγγραμμένες συνεδρίες συστημικής οικογενειακής θεραπείας τύπου Μιλάνου και μετεξελίξεων αυτής, ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις θεραπευτών και παρουσιάσεις της αναγνωρισμένης θεραπεύτριας Harlene Anderson. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις ρητορικές και ιδεολογικές συνέπειες των αλληλεπιδραστικών πλαισίων στα οποία συμμετείχαν οι ομιλητές, φαίνεται ότι ο λόγος των συμμετεχόντων, συγκροτείται γύρω από ένα δίπολο, με τον ένα πόλο να αναφέρεται στην αναγνώριση της ισότιμης συμμετοχής όλων των μελών στο θεραπευτικό διάλογο και τον άλλο στην αναγνώριση της θεραπείας ως μίας θεσμικής διεργασίας. ▼ Parents of children with intellectual disabilities born in Ontario in the era following World War II found themselves obliged to make significant yet misinformed decisions regarding their child’s long-term care. Immersed in postwar discourse which promoted the normative construction of the Canadian family, in combination with limited community support and generalized misconceptions of intellectual disability, many families had to choose between two principal options: keep their child at home and raise a child with needs divergent from the “norm” with few resources, or place the child in a segregated institution. Dating back to the latter half of the mid-nineteenth century, large-scale institutions for people with intellectual disabilities had become the predominant model of care for people with intellectual disabilities in Ontario outside of the family home. Many thousands of individuals were admitted to institutions; this bore significant consequences both for those admitted and for the families who decided to send them there. To date, scholarly work on institutions has focused on historical, political, and social factors which contributed to their development, as well as the more recent address of the narratives and histories of people who have lived there. Little is known, however, about the effect on family relationships and understandings of disability when one member of the family is institutionalized. The purpose of this project is to explore family relationships and understandings of disability when a family member with an intellectual disability is institutionalized for an extended period of time. Its principal body of data stems from thirty-six in-depth interviews conducted with the members of several families, including parents who institutionalized their children, siblings of those institutionalized, and those who were themselves institutionalized in Ontario in the years following World War II. Family members had widely divergent experiences in regards to institutionalization processes. Interpretations of the impact institutionalization had on the family were dependent on one’s location in relation to institutionalization. Findings demonstrate how relations of power were manifested in the family though institutionalization processes, and show the significant role that discursive constructions of intellectual disability have had on participants’ understandings of disability and of their family member. ▼ This thesis presents a critical analysis of the dilemmas of doing a PhD in the social sciences from the perspective of discursive psychology. It aims to contribute to qualitative studies of higher education, especially work in the sociology of education on social science doctoral research and training, and discourse analytic work on the dilemmas of education. It argues that there is a crucial bias in the literature on doctoral study. Much of the theory and research on doing a doctorate has been written and carried out by doctoral supervisors and established academic researchers, rather than doctoral students themselves. As a result, researchers have tended to study supervisor rather than student dilemmas and have left certain gaps in their studies, including the experiential dimensions of doctoral research, the discursive construction of postgraduate identities, and the patterns of ideology and power at play in doctoral student life. The present doctorate on doing a doctorate attempts to fill in these gaps, and at the same time introduces a distinctive critical, discursive, and reflexive take on postgraduate education. Detailed discourse analyses are carried out of in-depth semistructured interviews with PhD students in various psychology and social science departments in the United Kingdom. The analysis pays attention to the conversational, rhetorical, and ideological patterning of doctoral postgraduate discourse. In particular, it concerns the academic identity work done by the postgraduates, the ways in which they manage particular interactional, selfpresentational, and ideological dilemmas in their talk, and the different forms of power that are at play as they carry out their doctorates. In addition, a form of practical, analytic reflexivity is developed in the thesis, whereby the authors' own methodological and interviewing practices are analysed, along with text of the thesis itself. The general argument is that the topic of postgraduate academic identity proves a good case study for the investigation of some of the hidden dynamics of power, as well as the use of wider ideological values, in the construction of identities in contemporary institutional settings.

Abstract This dissertation looks into the meanings of the duodji, Sámi handicrafts. The study approaches duodji as an institution that regulates, defines, and produces the meanings of the duodji in different ways. The research material – Sámi Parliament Statements, Committee Memorandums, Craftsmen's Seminar Speeches, and Interviews with Duodji Entrepreneurs – are interpreted by means of discourse analysis. The theoretical framework is social constructivism, which is tangibly defined by the concepts of social norms and commercial branding. The research questions are how the duodji institution is built and how it produces the meanings of the duodji, and how the norms and brands of duodji work in this process. The aim is to find out the role of duodji as a mirror and interpreter of the Sámi society and to explore how the Sámi political and economic phenomena are reflected in the meanings of the Duodji. The research shows that in the 1970s a discursive shift was taking place in the duodji, whereby the duodji was incorporated into the Sámi ethnic politics and it became strongly institutionalized. As a consequence, the continuous meaning negotiations of the duodji are the core of the existence of the duodji institution. The formal duodji institution seeks to produce representative and meaningful duodji through, inter alia, duodji picture books and public statements concerning handicrafts. As a social institution, duodji is linked to social norms and their control. The control of norms is not so much the subject of duodji authenticity, but the power relations within the Sámi social interaction. The commercial duodji institution builds brands that utilise norms and norm control as well as representational duodji discourses.

Tiivistelmä Väitöskirjan aiheena on duodjin eli saamelaisen käsityön merkitykset. Tutkimuksessa duodjia lähestytään instituutiona, joka säätelee, määrittelee ja tuottaa duodjin merkityksiä eri tavoin. Tutkimusaineistoa eli saamelaiskäräjälausuntoja, komiteamietintöjä, käsityöntekijöiden seminaaripuheenvuoroja ja duodjiyrittäjien haastatteluja tulkitaan diskurssinalyysin keinoin. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä on sosiaalinen konstruktionismi, jota konkretisoidaan sosiaalisen normin ja kaupallisen brändin käsitteillä. Tutkimuksessa kysytään, miten duodji-instituutio rakentuu, miten se tuottaa duodjin merkityksiä sekä miten duodjin normit ja brändit toimivat tässä prosessissa. Tavoitteena on selvittää duodjin roolia saamelaisen yhteiskunnan peilinä ja tulkkina sekä tutkia, miten saamelaisten poliittiset ja taloudelliset ilmiöt heijastuvat duodjin merkityksissä. Tutkimuksessa käy ilmi, että 1970-luvulla duodjin kohdalla tapahtui diskursiivinen käänne: duodji otettiin osaksi saamelaista etnopolitiikkaa ja se myös institutionalisoitui voimakkaasti. ▼ In 2010, I was seconded from my classroom teaching position to work as a facilitator in the implementation of the newly-established National Standards. In this role, I ran in-depth Literacy and Assessment workshops in schools. I found that despite the national effort to close the gap between achievers and non- achievers, schools are still faced with the issue of most Samoan students not doing well as they should be, especially in the area of literacy. Assessment procedures from which such data is derived are widely researched in New Zealand and abroad. In spite of the numerous studies conducted on literacy assessment, none has ever been done to critically analyse the linguistic nature of these literacy assessment tools; yet these tools and their implementation may well contribute to the phenomenon of underachievement among Samoan students in New Zealand. Thus the aim of this inquiry was to open up the practice of standardised reading tests to examination. This thesis examines unacknowledged issues in the design of the standardised reading tests by which students are assessed in multicultural contexts. A Samoan critical approach was adopted specifically for this research: ‘Tofā'a'anolasi’, which draws on Foucault’s analytical tool box to counter-read tests texts and practices, including the way achievement data is managed and applied. Tofā'a'anolasi is based on my interpretation of Foucault’s ideas about power, knowledge and language in society, and how these ideas are useful in educational research undertaken from a Samoan perspective. This research framework is used to examine assumptions within and about assessment practice, particularly as it pertains to Samoan students in New Zealand. This thesis shows how the normalising hegemonic nature of assessment has profoundly disadvantaged Samoan students. This study includes critical discourse analysis of selected standardised reading testing tools in New Zealand primary schools. For this work, two reading test papers routinely used throughout New Zealand to assess the reading knowledge and skills of Year 7 and 8 students were analysed and critiqued. I also gathered stories from teachers as assessment administrators and Samoan students as assessment takers. Through focus group conversations, these assessment participants shared their own understandings and critiques of assessments. Moreover, I communicated with three key informants, who are also experts in the area of New Zealand primary school literacy assessments about the two standardised tests examined in thesis. Their stories are included in this research thesis. The analysis of the findings reveals serious mismatches between the language, culture, knowledge, experience and interests most of the Samoan students bring into the testing context, and those expected to succeed in the standardised tests. These discrepancies cause students confusion and dismay. The analysis also reveals the predominantly male oriented nature of tests contents and administration. Paikallisagenda painottaa kansalaisten osallistumista ja poikkihallinnollisuutta. Tarkastelen tutkimuksessa Tampereen kaupungissa vuosina 1994-2002 toteutunutta kestävän kehityksen suunnittelua. Kestävän kehityksen suunnittelun ymmärrän paikallisena hallintana (local governance), jonka keskeisenä piirteenä on kestävää kehitystä tavoittelevien paikallisten hallintaverkostojen muodostuminen. Tavoitteena on paikallisten verkostojen ja hallintojärjestelmän uudelleen organisoituminen, vallitsevien toimijatahojen välisten rajojen muuttaminen ja ylittäminen. Kyseessä on tapaustutkimus. Aineistona ovat kansalaisosallistujien, luottamushenkilöiden ja viranhaltijoiden haastattelut, suunnittelu- ja päätösasiakirjat sekä lehtiartikkelit. Tutkimus keskittyy kuntalaisten ja kunnallisten viranhaltijoiden ja luottamushenkilöiden välisten suhteiden kuvaamiseen ja analysoimiseen. Analyysin lähtökohtana on valtasuhteita tähdentävä kulttuurin tutkimus, joka painottaa yhteiskunnan toiminnan merkityksellisyyttä sekä toimijuuteen ja identiteettiin liittyviä kysymyksiä. Diskursiivisia valtasuhteita tarkastelen diskursiivisina kamppailuina ja toimijoiden välisinä rajoina. Diskursiiviset kamppailut muodostuvat erilaisten todellisuustulkintojen kohdatessa. Toimijoiden väliset rajat ilmentävät heidän osallistumis- ja toimintamahdollisuuksiaan kestävän kehityksen suunnittelussa. Kestävän kehityksen suunnittelun puhetavoissa ja käytännöissä ilmeneviä merkityksiä tulkitsen hegemonisina diskursseina ja vastadiskursseina sekä toimija-asemina ja identiteetteinä. Tarkasteltuna ajanjaksona kestävän kehityksen suunnittelusta on erotettavissa neljä erilaista vaihetta. ▼ The object of this thesis is to describe, analyze and understand the terms and meanings of the public information and the political communication for local democracy, in today´s media landscape, out of the interaction between the main parties of the local society in Sjöbo and Ystad and from the stand point of earlier research and theories. The study has analyzed the actions performed by citizens, politicians, employees and journalists as well as the scenes for this information and communication. The interplay is a never ending power struggle between the three parties, concerning the accessibility of information and communication, especially to the kind that is given and takes place in informal, nonofficial rooms and channels which are not publicly accessible. Theories by M Weber, E Goffman, Z Bauman, M Foucault, J Habermas etc are being used. Case study method has given rise to three themes. The first describes how the increasing demands of rationalization, are displayed in the everyday practice, how it manifests in the interaction between the three parties, where processes of rationalization undermine the possibilities of dialogue. The second theme describes how the three parties use different strategies in order to obtain or keep the power of the information and the communication and thus the power of the politics, how the definitions of the main parties can be deconstructed and how the power can shift from one actor to another, depending on available power positions. Those in power withdraw themselves from communication with the citizens in different ways,by the use of different power techniques, which leads to a dynamic resistance where both journalists and citizens work out counter strategies. The public speech about the need to revitalize the civic sphere has been prominent for a long time. The third theme thus describes this promising speech of the public information and the political communication, how it has been handled and what the consequences are. The empirical material displays that the holders of the traditional power positions, tend to polish this visible side. The cosmetic considerations have proved to be the most significant ones in the studied practice and do play a significant part in the contemporary discursive practice as well as it terms the public information and the political communication. Those in power try to project the cosmetic democracy and the speech of new opportunities, on democracy, on the importance of communication and information and of participating, have become necessary ingredients in the cosmetic democracy, which is increasing. This does not mean that all democracy being exercised is cosmetic. Nevertheless, the surface and the speech of democracy become more distant from the content, by all the talk of its splendid qualities.

▼ In this dissertation, I focused attention on the narratives of what I defined as “these new generation rural migrant female workers.” In explaining their existence, I addressed the issue of significance in highlighting what I have termed “macro discourse”—the One-Child policy, the Household Responsibility System, and the discursive reality that they have been embedded in, along with the “micro discourses” that were represented in the discourses of the rural migrant female workers. In order to approach these new generation rural migrant female workers’ identity (re)construction in both macro and micro narratives, I engaged in a rhetorical analysis of the two policies and the social-historical discourse that they were embedded in as well as went to the field to conduct 20 in-depth interviews with members from this group of female workers.Under the guide of Nietzsche’s understanding of discourse and language as well as Foucault’s theory of discourse, I asked: 1) What and how image(s) of new generation rural migrant female workers have been constructed in the One-Child policy and the HRS? 2) How, if at all, the policies are reflected in the stories told by these new generation rural migrant female workers? 3) What, if possible, alternative understanding of the relationship between discourse and agency can be offered as rural migrant female workers talk about their way of acting/negotiating/reconstructing their identities? and 4) How might questions 2 and 3 provide a deeper conception of these new generation rural migrant female workers in this particular historical time?Nietzsche’s aesthetic language philosophy as well as Foucault’s theory of discourse offered me lenses to carefully examine the texts of the two policies and the social-historical discourse that they were ensconced within. Meanwhile, the abductive nature of grounded theory offered me insights as I was analyzing the raw materials collected from the field about what to focus on when examining the texts of the two policies and the interview data.Therefore, as I analyzed the two political texts—the Open Letter and the HRS, I answered the first research question in Chapter Four. I noted that these new generation rural migrant female workers, a group born after the launch of the OL and the HRS, were described in the OL to be “the origin of problems” for the family and for the country as they would definitely jeopardize the progress of the “Four Modernization” and retard economic development.In Chapter Five, through analyzing the 20 in-depth interviews with these new generation rural migrant female workers, I answered the second research question as I argued that the rural migrant female workers’ stories were around two themes: receiving love and care from their parents, and experiencing hardships in the discourses that they have lived in. ▼ During the last 30 years deliberative democracy and public engagement with science have developed in theory and practice to the extent that areas of consensus have emerged about good deliberative public engagement in theory. This thesis argues that in practice some areas of consensus require tradeoffs. Tradeoffs help practitioners to make decisions in design that they will otherwise have to navigate in process. Other researchers have discussed five tensions in STS public engagement; this thesis adapts three as tradeoffs. The tradeoffs are representative or inclusive participation; public or organisational ownership; and upstream or actionable outcomes. These tradeoffs are analysed through three case studies of deliberative public engagement with science in Australia. The three case studies used two different methods of deliberative public engagement with science, namely deliberative voting and citizen’s jury methods. All of the case studies were examples of invited participation, reflecting organisational ownership. Public ownership is incompatible with invited participation, given the role of an organising sponsor or group of people who have power in designing deliberations. Criteria for good deliberative public engagement with science can make power imbalances transparent, but organisational norms remain evident in outcomes. Access to information varies in deliberative public engagement with science. Organisational norms are revealed through what information is chosen as relevant in design phases. What information becomes part of a deliberative process depends on which scientists present and with which expert witnesses are available for participants to engage. In addition, communicative actions of participants during processes can change what information participants use to develop mutual understandings. For example, in the second case study, live results of attitudinal voting were shared on a screen during deliberations. This may have influenced how participants engaged with each other. Deliberations in the third case study were organised around the report of an earlier commission, however personal narratives shared by deliberators became extra sources of information. Though much information is predesigned, communicative actions during deliberations can have impacts. Considering what information participants bring to deliberations through their perspectives during recruitment is discursive representation. In this thesis, all three case studies were analysed for demographic representativeness. Some scholars have argued discursive representativeness is more valuable for deliberative public engagement with science. ▼ Since the post-positivist turn in critical political theory, many scholars of political science have tried to reimagine the discipline through feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial critiques. However, even critical scholars often overlook that all forms of critique are aesthetic- as is the mainstream of political science that they criticize. Despite these proliferating critiques, much of political science is still shaped by a robust epistemological orientation towards scientific aspirations, which I describe as a scientific epistemic mode. The argument of this thesis is that the dominance of a scientific epistemic mode in political science orients this discipline erroneously against aesthetic receptivity and production. The relationship between political science and aesthetics is often characterized by affects of discomfort and shame, so that aesthetic qualities in research are associated with unscientific, and therefore illegitimate outcomes. The claim that aesthetics is not suited to the study of politics is longstanding, but not necessarily legitimate. Rather than conceive of aesthetics and science as essentially opposed, this thesis considers how this dualism can be understood as a discursive formation. The notion of aesthetics as a threat to science exists as far back as Plato’s Republic, where poetry is banished for the sake of philosophy. Contra Plato, Kant acknowledges aesthetics as a relevant epistemic mode in The Critique of Judgment, but determines aesthetics to be irreconcilable with a reason-based, scientific epistemology. Finally, in The Birth of Tragedy Nietzsche’s reading of Attic Tragedy suggests that, like the figures of Dionysus and Apollo, aesthetics and science can be thought of as two forces in a relation of productive antagonism rather than mutual exclusion or domination. In response to the naturalized, scientific epistemic mode in political science, an aesthetic epistemic mode acknowledges the fusion of aesthetics and science in the production of political analysis. Following Isabelle Stengers, this thesis tries to slow down the sense that aesthetics is inferior, excluded and dominated by science, suggesting that political science begin to cultivate a receptive awareness of its own aesthetic value. In making aesthetics a legitimate focus in political science, an aesthetic epistemic mode is practised by seeking out relevant questions rather than demanding immediate, “scientific” answers. ▼ The abuse of power, dominance of certain shared perspectives, and reduction of personal values into so-called organizational core values are problems that plague traditional organizational direction setting. The purpose of this study was to explore how power intersects with the knowledge formation process, shared perspectives, and participatory processes within organizational direction setting. The study used an ethnographic case study approach to focus on a church that went through a yearlong direction setting process. The church had lost its senior pastor and wanted to determine its direction before hiring a new pastor. The researcher was a participant in that process. His field notes and other documentation provided one source of data. The researcher also interviewed 20 people who participated in the process. In terms of the intersection of power and knowledge formation, the study revealed that the discursive practices of the facilitator along with the voices of those in privileged groups, the outspoken, and those who had engendered trust in others carried considerable weight during the process. At the intersection of power with shared perspectives, there were two major perspectives representing subgroup cultures: a traditional perspective that resisted change and a progressive perspective that wanted change. The progressives dominated the church’s privileged groups and exerted extensive influence on the direction setting process. The organizational symbols of church staff and worship music style served to galvanize some people in the battle over which perspective would prevail. Transparency functioned as a bridge that brought some on either side of the conflict closer together. The research revealed two major types of power related to the intersection of power with participatory processes: the power of pain and intimidation. Both minimized the participation of some women, youth, and traditionalists. All three intersections featured deployments of power that influenced the construction of directional knowledge. This knowledge helped to inform the rules of “appropriate” conduct within the organization’s emerging truth regime. The study revealed that, in this case, robust directional knowledge would have accommodated personal, subgroup, and widely shared values in a state of dynamic equilibrium. The researcher concluded with a discussion of implications for organizational leaders.

This dissertation interrogates the deficit assumptions about English proficiency of skilled immigrants who were recruited by Canadian governments between the late 1990s and early 2000s. Through the lens of literacy as social practice, the eighteen-month ethnographic qualitative research explores the sequential experiences of settlement and economic integration of seven well-educated Chinese immigrant professionals. The analytical framework is built on sociocultural approaches to literacy and learning, as well as the theories of discourses and language reproduction. Using multiple data sources (observations, conversational interviews, journal and diary entries, photographs, documents, and artifacts collected in everyday lives), I document many different ways that well-educated Chinese immigrants take advantage of their language and literacy skills in English across several social domains of home, school, job market, and workplace. Examining the trans-contextual patterning of the participants’ language and literacy activities reveals that immigrant professionals use literacy as assistance in seeking, negotiating, and taking hold of resources and opportunities within certain social settings. However, my data show that their language and literacy engagements might not always generate positive consequences for social networks, job opportunities, and upward economic mobility. Close analyses of processes and outcomes of the participants’ engagements across these discursive discourses make it very clear that the monolithic assumptions of the dominant language shape and reinforce structural barriers by constraining their social participation, decision making, and learning practice, and thereby make literacy’s consequences unpredictable. The deficit model of language proficiency serves the grounds for linguistic stereotypes and economic marginalization, which produces profoundly consequential effects on immigrants’ pathways as they strive for having access to resources and opportunities in the new society. My analyses illuminate the ways that language and literacy create the complex web of discursive spaces wherein institutional agendas and personal desires are intertwined and collide in complex ways that constitute conditions and processes of social and economic mobility of immigrant populations. Based on these analyses, I argue that immigrants’ successful integration into a host country is not about the mastery of the technical skills in the dominant language. Rather, it is largely about the recognition and acceptance of the value of their language use and literacy practice as they attempt to partake in the globalized new economy.
