陶磁器は長年の歴史があり、美術工芸品としての側面を持つ一方で、量産される工業製品でもあり、デザインから試作を経て製品が作られる。陶磁器の量産には石膏で作られた型が使用される。型製作は、これまで熟達した職人の手作業に頼っていた。後継者が育たないまま職人たちは高齢化して退職時期を迎えているが、このままでは産業自体が成り立たなくなる。一方で、新商品開発には、以前にも増してスピードと精度が求められている。 以上のような課題を克服するためには、コンピュータ技術に基づいたデジタル化されたプロセスの導入が非常に有効である。他の製品分野でも以前は同様の問題を抱えていたが、このプロセスの導入により解決が図られた。陶磁器業界は、デザインプロセスでのコンピュータ利用が遅れている。本研究は、コンピュ一タ技術によるデジタルデザインプロセスを陶磁器デザインの現場に導入し改革を図るため、形状デザインから型製作に至る各プロセスでの種々の問題を検証し、解決を図るものである。 効果的に導入するためには、効果的なプロセスを提示する必要がある。現状のプロセスを調査し、ヨーロッパの陶磁器メーカーでの先進事例を調査し、デジタルツールで置換するための新しいプロセスモデルを仮定した。 このプロセスモデルを実現するため、まずモデリングソフトウェアによる効果的な陶磁器の3D形状データ制作法を検討した。次に3Dデータを実体化するラピッドプロトタイピング技術によるサンプルモデル製作法について研究し、有効性を検討した。また現状のプロセスでは原型が必要だったが、3DデータからCNC切削による硬膏型の直接製作法について研究を重ねた。 CNC切削による型の精度、表面品質は、手作業に頼る現状のプロセスを遥かに上回るものである。製品と同品質の試作品が得られるまでの時間が短縮され、コストも安価である。型修正は正確に短時間で終了でき、試作サイクル回数も軽減することができた。 しかしながら、陶磁器には、焼成時に大きく変形を起こすという独特の問題がある。今までは変形を,予測するには経験に頼っていたが、新たなデジタルデザインプロセスをさらに効果的なものにするため、FEM解析技術を応用して、変形を予測する技術について研究した。仮想の弾性体に重力を与えて変形する様子を焼成変形の近似モデルとする研究を行い、非常に簡便で良好な予測手法であることを確認した。一連の研究成果により、試作サイクルを大幅に低減する一方で、今まで陶磁器では商品化が困難だった形状でも商品化できる可能性が生まれた。 新たな一連のデザインプロセスにより、型製作以前のデザイン段階で詳細な検討が行え、データがデジタル化されたことにより曖昧さが排除されて当初の意図が最後まで継承される。 型を精密に作る技術など、今まで重要であった一部の技能は次第に不要になってくることも考えられる。デジタルデザインツールに関する技術があれば、陶磁器の経験が浅い若者でも、熟練した職人の技能を遥かに上回る精度で、自動的に型を作ることが出来るようになった。人員配置も変化するであろう。デザイン検討はデータを確認することで行えるため、開発はグローバル化し、今までに見られなかった製品が生まれる可能性もある。業界でも3社がシステムを導入するなど認知も進みつつあり、今後の一層の普及が期待できる。
