▼ Tremor is a very low amplitude involuntary oscillatory-like limb motion that is barely visible to the naked eye but present in all individuals. In this study, we investigated the tremor dynamics of digits within and across hands that occurred under both 0 degree postural angle and 30 degree postural angle crossed with eyes open and eyes closed conditions. Twelve healthy young adults participated in the study (4 conditions, 12 trials/condition, 30s/trial) and accelerometers were used to measure
digit tremor. Amplitude analysis showed that the 30 degree posture angle increased the magnitude of acceleration regardless of vision condition. Visual information increased tremor amplitude of the left hand but not the right hand digits. Tremor amplitude was greater in the index finger and progressively smaller in the middle, ring and little fingers. Approximate Entropy (ApEn) showed that the higher postural angle led to greater tremor irregularity. The coupling of the tremor of the index and middle fingers was highest and the level of the coupling within hand decreased as the relative adjacency of digits from each other increased. There was no evidence of tremor coupling in the homologous digits across hands. Postural angle of the digits and the availability of visual information modestly changed the scaling of the tremor dynamics. It is concluded that the anatomical and physiological structures are the primary influence on the tremor dynamics of amplitude and coupling within and between digits of the hands.

RANKL and RANK are members of the TNF-superfamily and TNF-receptor superfamily, respectively. They are known to play an important role in the regulation of bone mass and in the development and the function of the immune system. However questions still remain. We have used genetically modified mice to address some of these questions, in particular by using a mouse whose lymph node marginal reticular stromal cells lack RANKL. The results obtained during this PhD provide important new insights into the positive impact of stromal RANKL on lymph node macrophages…

▼ This thesis provides the first documentation and description of the signs created and used by deaf individuals in Vanuatu. The specific aims of this research were as follows: to establish the sociolinguistic context experienced by deaf people in Vanuatu; to identify the repertoire and characteristics of signs used by the deaf participants; to compare features of participants’ individual signs with the characteristics of home signs and emerging
sign languages; and to consider the degree of similarity and potential similarity of signs between participants and how this reflects individuals’ opportunities for contact with other deaf people and signing interlocutors. The limitations of this study are that field methodology for data collection was developed in situ as conditions allowed. The sociolinguistic context for deaf Ni-Vanuatu confirms that language isolation leads to marginalisation from community and society. The study established that these home
sign lexicons were limited in quantity and conceptual range, and that shared background knowledge was essential for comprehension. Overall, 22 handshapes were documented, and the predominant handshapes unmarked. Most participants preferred handling strategy for depicting signs. Some evidence of noun-verb distinction was noted in the repertoire of some participants. However, across this range of formational characteristics, results showed significant individual variations. Furthermore, multiple barriers have precluded development of a shared
sign language and any form of deaf community.

▼ This dissertation is devoted to the measure theoretical aspects of the theory of
automata and groups generated by them. It consists of two main parts. In the first
part we study the action of automata on Bernoulli measures. We describe how a
finite-state automorphism of a regular rooted tree changes the Bernoulli measure on
the boundary of the tree. It turns out, that a finite-state automorphism of polynomial
growth, as defined by Sidki, preserves a measure class of a Bernoulli measure, and
we write down the explicit formula for its Radon-Nikodim derivative. On the other
hand the image of the Bernoulli measure under the action of a strongly connected
finite-state automorphism is singular to the measure itself.
The second part is devoted to introduction of measure into the theory of limit
spaces of Nekrashevysh. Let G be a group and φ : H → G be a contracting
homomorphism from a subgroup H < G of finite index. Nekrashevych associated
with the pair (G, φ) the limit dynamical system (JG, s) and the limit G-space XG
together with the covering ∪g∈GT · g by the tile T. We develop the theory of selfsimilar
measures m on these limit spaces. It is shown that (JG, s,m) is conjugate
to the one-sided Bernoulli shift. Using sofic subshifts we prove that the tile T has
integer measure and we give an algorithmic way to compute it. In addition we give
an algorithm to find the measure of the intersection of tiles T ∩ (T · g) for g ∈ G. We
present applications to the evaluation of the Lebesgue measure of integral self-affine tiles.
Previously the main tools in the theory of self-similar fractals were tools from
measure theory and analysis. The methods developed in this disseration provide a
new way to investigate self-similar and self-affine fractals, using combinatorics and
group theory.

▼ The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, continuously develops to form a tight epidermal barrier that is required for animal hydration and survival. Epidermal development occurs during embryogenesis via the mechanism of epidermal differentiation. We have previously described the role of the epidermal transcription factor Grainyhead like-3 (GRHL3) in epidermal differentiation and barrier formation. Additionally, we observed that mice lacking Grhl3 in the epidermis exhibit soft-tissue syndactyly between their digits, this phenomenon was also detected in Grhl3 germline knockouts (Grhl3KO). Through our work, we identified epithelial mechanisms required for normal digit separation during development. We discovered the formation of a multi-layered epithelial structure between the digits. In Grhl3KO embryos, the interdigital epithelia is fused, resulting in syndactyly. The separation of the epithelial structure depends on the anti-adhesive properties of the periderm, a transient layer located at the uppermost surface of the embryonic epidermis. We found that periderm cells in Grhl3 KO are hyper-adhesive with abnormal expression of adhesion molecules on their surfaces. Our findings reveal novel epithelial mechanisms required for digit separation; they also uncover a crucial role of Grhl3 in normal periderm development. Adult skin is normally maintained in the absence of Grhl3. Our previous work indicated that Grhl3 is required for epidermal recovery after injury. Adult mice lacking Grhl3 in the epidermis exhibit impaired full-thickness wound healing and delayed keratinocyte migration. We observed an increase in cell-cell adhesion between follower cells at the wound-edge in Grhl3 cKO, concomitant with an increase expression of the adherens junction’s protein, E-cadherin. Gene expression analysis of Grhl3 cKO wounded-keratinocytes 3 days post wounding shows a significant downregulation of F-actin protein Fscn1, a protein known to negatively regulate the expression of E-cadherin. These data indicate a novel Grhl3-Fscn1 mechanism required for cell-cell loosening in follower cells during keratinocyte migration in wounding. In addition, we observed that early after wounding, Grhl3 cKO mice exhibit a defect in dermal vasodilation and decreased blood flow. Gene expression analysis of wounded-keratinocytes 24 hrs post wounding suggest that Grhl3 regulate the expression of enzymes required for the biosynthesis of vasodilator factor prostaglandin E2. These observations are intriguing and suggest a Grhl3-mediated vasodilation during cutaneous wound healing.

▼ Customer choice means that customers, who are in need of a product, service or any kind of service, could have more impact and more opportunity to influence the activities they are dependent of. Customer choice models are introduced at a rapid pace today in several municipalities and counties. About Freedom of Choice Act (LOV), introduced January 1, 2009 is to facilitate this development. Today is the customers who need home care able to choose providers in the communities that have chosen to implement LOV. Now that the municipalities in the future to meet the competition they will face in the LOV, it is interesting to look at what the customers in the current situation, the possibilities of choice, think about this.My purpose was to conduct a study of user model used in the municipality of Boden. This is to be able to contribute important knowledge from this work to a subsequent, broader evaluation of the choice systemThe study is qualitative and it is conducted five interviews with customers who have home-help both through the agency of the municipality and a private provider. This was done to gain a deeper understanding of how customers perceive the choice they have been incorporated by the introduction of LOV. The theoretical framework consists of concepts: the user-oriented management model, generations, public institutions cases, the individualized society and evaluation. The results show that the generation that currently affected by the choice models do not have knowledge of what choice means for them. The information from local governments should be reviewed and adjusted so that provided this information understands what it means and what opportunities there are. The next generation in need of assisted living has grown up with entirely different conditions than the current home care clients, they have been through growing up a point to choose and cut, and only then will choice model to function as intended.

▼ The light–oxygen–voltage sensitive (LOV) domain subset of the PAS superfamily is a ubiquitous photoreceptor class that enables organisms across multiple kingdoms to sense blue light. LOV photoreceptors are modular flavin-binding proteins that consist of discrete sensor and effector domains. Blue-light drives a LOV sensor to trigger a conformational change in photoreceptor structure that ultimately regulates the biochemical function of one or more of its fused effectors. The nature by which LOV photoreceptors vary in their sensor-effector domain combinations allows for light-gated regulation by a single-photoreceptor class of diverse physiological processes across species in varied ecological settings that underlie circadian rhythms, virulence, phototropism, and stress responses.
Here, we report the bioinformatics identification of over 6,700 candidate LOV domains and their annotation for sensor-effector topology and inferred ontological function. In addition to nearly tripling the number of reported LOV sequences, we identified several classes of LOV proteins with predicted sensor-effector pairings that were previously unknown or considered rare and thus have yet to be functionally characterized, including photoreceptors with LOV sensors and Regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) and PAS homology effectors (“RGS-LOV-PAS”) in dikarya fungi and brown algae. We report the experimental characterization of two bioinformatics-identified fungal RGS-LOV-PAS photoreceptors, BcRGS5 from B cinerea and CeRGS from C. europaea, that rapidly localize from cytoplasm to the plasma membrane upon blue-light illumination in a heterologous mammalian cell expression system. Dynamic membrane localization by BcRGS5 is mediated by a light-switchable high affinity electrostatic interaction with anionic phospholipids. The seconds-timescale membrane-recruitment, likely driven by a conserved lipid-binding amphipathic helix, may serve to potentiate RGS effector activity on membrane-bound binding partners in the native fungal organism. As neither LOV photoreceptors nor RGS proteins nor PAS sensory proteins are known to traffic by light-gated and direct association with phospholipids, this work establishes a novel photosensory signaling mechanism for multiple protein classes and highlights the value of applying genomic technologies to diverse organisms to capture photosensory protein diversity that is vastly important in adaptation, photobiology, and optogenetics.

▼ Sign language is the primary means of communication for the hard to
hear and speak people around the globe. Sign language emphasizes on visual
possibilities as the participants are unable to hear sound patterns. Sign language
uses different signs, body postures and gestures as opposed to sound patterns
for communication, and evolves like any other spoken language. American
Sign Language (ASL), British sign language (BSL), Arabic sign language
(ArSL), Chinese sign language (CSL) and Indian sign language (ISL) are some
of the widely used sign language systems around the world. There exists
significant variation between sign languages, and due to these inherent
variations, it is not possible to fully adopt a methodology that is found suitable
for all. There are enormous complexities in ISL. Contrary to ASL, ISL
sentences follow Subject-Object-Verb pattern. For example, the relative
positioning of hand on face with respect to nose can convey ‘WOMAN’ or
‘THINK’ in ISL. Such complexities necessitate independent research in ISL.
Sign language recognition involves integration of different categories
of signs. The signs can be mainly categorized into three groups like static hand
gestures, dynamic gestures and facial expression. This research focuses on
these three different channels and work to identify the potential of different
computational methods to address some of the associated complexities with
each channel. These complexities include static gestures with resemblances,
static overlaid gestures, differential movement and directional changes in
dynamic gestures and facial expression changes.

sign language found in Afghanistan (Lewis, Simons, and Fennig 2014).
Signs in Afghan
Sign Language contrast based on the handshape parameter. Furthermore, handshapes contrast based on selected fingers, thumb configuration, arrangement, and aperture. The thesis gives evidence for the selected fingers features [one], [two], [three], and [four]; for the thumb configuration features [opposed], [radial], and [contacting]; for the arrangement features [spread], [joined], and [crossed]; and for the aperture features [open] and [closed].
Of the 22 expected feature combinations, 18 are found in the data. The feature system presented here accounts for native handshapes in Afghan
Sign Language. A minority of handshapes, six of 506 in the data, require extra features such as [middle] and [little] for the selected fingers and [extended] for the unselected fingers, as well as [bent]. Non-native handshapes such as those borrowed through the fingerspelling alphabet or from American
Sign Language also require extra features. Factors such as movement, point of contact, and articulatory constraints account for differences between the underlying feature combinations and surface handshapes.

▼ This dissertation represents the first ethnographic study of the formation of a signing community in the San Juan Quiahije (SJQ), an indigenous Mesoamerican community in the Oaxaca, southern Mexico. The SJQ community consists of two neighboring Chatino villages, San Juan Quiahije and Cieneguilla. The Chatino people are an indigenous Mesoamerican group. Although the SJQ community does not have a high incidence of hereditary deafness, the community is unique because the families with deaf people have produced their own
sign languages, San Juan Quiahije Chatino
Sign Language (SJQCSL). I present three linked claims. First, an emerging
sign language and signing community arises through families in coresidence. The family is the central social institution in the SJQ community, and serves as the primary organization of the signing community. The family serves as a community of practice; at the same time, the families belong to same larger social network of the SJQ community. Second, each signing family develops its own lexicon and perceives the lex- icon as their own creation. At the same time, the families share the communitys repertoire of conventional gestures. A closer examination of the lexicons reveal some overlap – an iconic patterning for the semantic categories of tools, food, and animals – between the family lexicons, but there are some distinctive characteristics such as different iconic patterning of animals and the development of directional verbs in one family. The family
sign languages are not wholly distinct but they are not standardized either. Third, there is variation in family language ecologies. The ecologies shape and are shaped by overlapping and characteristic language ideologies about communicative accommodation, signed and spoken language development, form and function of
sign language, and schooling. The consequences of the language ideologies are such that caregivers do not generally provide their children communicative accommodation, which has profound implications and consequences for the access and input to signed and spoken conversations for children. These findings suggest that SJQCSL may be best classified as a constellation of family
sign languages and the signing community of SJQ consists of multiple, extended families in co-residence.

▼ Signed-
digit representation has been used to perform
fast binary addition by eliminating the dependant carry chains. In
this thesis, a high-speed radix-2 signed-
digit architecture is
first presented, which is easily expandable to 8-bit, 16-bit,
32-bit, and 64-bit signed-
digit adder. The architecture mainly
consists of two digital components: 1) 2s complement adder, and 2)
redundant binary to 2s complement converter. The 2s complement
adder adds two input operands and gives the sum resulting in a
signed-
digit format. The redundant binary to 2s complement
converter converts the redundant binary format to the 2s complement
format output. Next, by using a blend of software and custom design
optimization, the 2s complement adder, the redundant binary to 2s
complement converter, and the N-bit signed-
digit adder (for N= 8,
16, 32, 64) are all 100% testable.

▼ Research has shown that five parameters are required to recognize any
sign language
gesture: hand shape, location, orientation and motion, as well as facial expressions. The
South African
Sign Language (SASL) research group at the University of the Western
Cape has created systems to recognize
Sign Language gestures using single parameters.
Using a single parameter can cause ambiguities in the recognition of signs that are
similarly signed resulting in a restriction of the possible vocabulary size. This research
pioneers work at the group towards combining multiple parameters to achieve a larger
recognition vocabulary set. The proposed methodology combines hand location and
hand shape recognition into one combined recognition system. The system is shown to
be able to recognize a very large vocabulary of 50 signs at a high average accuracy of
74.1%. This vocabulary size is much larger than existing SASL recognition systems,
and achieves a higher accuracy than these systems in spite of the large vocabulary. It
is also shown that the system is highly robust to variations in test subjects such as skin
colour, gender and body dimension. Furthermore, the group pioneers research towards
continuously recognizing signs from a video stream, whereas existing systems recognized a single
sign at a time. To this end, a highly accurate continuous gesture segmentation strategy is proposed and shown to be able to accurately recognize sentences consisting of five isolated SASL gestures.

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ understanding and knowledge of the equal sign, so that instructional resources could be identified to improve student’s conceptual understanding about mathematical equivalence. A test, consisting of a combination of items taken from previous studies, as well as items developed by the researchers, was designed to gauge students’ understanding of the equality symbol. The test was administered to 54 seventh-graders in Spring 2015. The results of the test indicated a significant number of students in our district have a limited understanding of mathematical equivalence. This papers ends with some suggested activities recommended to prepare students for formal courses in algebra by offering teachers opportunities to understand and develop their student’s grasp of equality and the equal sign.

▼ Home
sign systems are gestural communication systems that arise when a deaf child is deprived of manual communication, but not social interaction. Yet, despite not having conventional linguistic input, the
sign systems developed by such children have been found to exhibit many properties of natural language. In this paper, I examine the productions of RCM, a 28-year-old deaf home signer, and his three most common interlocutors, all living in Nueva Vida, a village in Peruvian Amazonia. According to his parents, RCM has never spoken and has used gestural communication since childhood. Neither RCM nor anyone within the community have been exposed to a conventional
sign language. However, RCM's family and friends gesture with him to communicate. Analysis focused on the use of spatial modulation and
sign order in argument structure and negation for all four signers, comparing consistency both internal to the signer and across signers. I found that RCM produces a consistent
sign order for transitive constructions, intransitive constructions and negation. RCM used
sign order to mark semantic role contrasts. He produced two different lexical negation signs to mark three types of grammatical negation. The ordering of semantic arguments and negation was matched in almost all cases by the three hearing interlocutors. Although RCM had a consistent and productive means of assigning arguments, he also employed space in a class of signs that can be classified as `directional verbs'. These action signs marked the patient or recipient through movement. In addition to spatial modulation, he assigned referents to abstract space and was able to refer back to these referents using points or spatial modulation. All three hearing signers were found to use some degree of spatial modulation. However, the degree to which the hearing signers were capable of using abstract space varied across signers. I showed that RCM is the innovator of these structures and that the hearing signers learned the structures from RCM.

▼ Highly parallel VLSI implementations of low-density
parity-check (LDPC) block code decoders have a large number of
interconnections, which can result in designs with low logic
density. Bit-serial architectures have been developed that reduce
the number of wires needed. However, they do not fully realize the
potential for deeply pipelined serial data processing. Digit-online
arithmetic allows operations to be performed in a serial,
digit-by-digit manner, making it ideal for use in implementing a
digit-serial LDPC decoder. Digit-online circuits for the primitive
operations required for an offset min-sum LDPC decoder are simple,
and allow deep pipelining at the digit level. A new hardware
architecture for LDPC decoding is demonstrated, using redundant
notation to allow for most-significant-digit-first processing of
log-likelihood-ration (LLR) messages at all nodes. We examine the
effect of changing the precision of LLRs on the throughput, area
and energy efficiency of bit-parallel and digit-online decoders for
the irregular WiMAX rate 3/4A length-1056 code. Both single-frame
and frame-interlaced decoding are considered. To examine
post-layout and code size effects, 9-bit bit-parallel and
digit-online decoders for the irregular WiMAX rate 3/4A and rate
5/6 codes are compared for code lengths varying from 576 to 2304.
Post-layout decoder results are presented for the (2048,1723)
10GBASE-T LDPC code in a general-purpose 65-nm CMOS technology. The
decoder requires a core area of 10.89 mm2 and operates at a clock
frequency of 980 MHz. Decoding can be done with a message precision
of 4 or 10 bits. With 4-bit precision, the decoder achieves a coded
throughput of 82.8 Gbit/s, 73% higher than the state-of-the-art
published decoder. We extend the message precision of previously
published 10GBASE-T decoders from 4-5 bits to 10 bits. In this
10-bit mode we achieve a throughput of 41.8 Gbit/s, only 12% less
than the state-of-the-art 4-bit decoder.

The objective of this dissertation aims to bring the methodological reflection elements around the Napping® method. Chapter 1 provides the concept of Napping® via a description of its procedure and data format, as it was originally conceived by Jérôme Pagès (2005). This chapter also discussed the importance of taking into account the subject's behaviour during the task for a better understanding of the data collected and their analysis. Chapter 2 proposes a model of the subject's behaviour in which the number of stimuli is relatively high, a situation commonly encountered in practice. This model and its limitations lead to Chapter 3, where a new technique for collecting Napping® data, named digit-tracking, is presented. This new technique of data collection allows to observe the subject’s behaviour over time by recording the relative positioning of all stimuli throughout the task rather than solely her/his final configuration. Finally, Chapter 4 presents a tool devoted to collecting Napping® data over time. This tool is a collaborative platform that works together with an android application for collecting data on tactile tablet devices – Holos environment, which enables researchers to share totally or partially their study resources.

▼ Mednarodna in globalna podjetja potrebujejo učinkovite informacijske sisteme in sicer za svoje interne in zunanje povezave. Ti sistemi morajo zagotavljati zanesljive informacije in njihovo hitro izmenjavo, kar je ključno v procesu sprejemanja poslovnih odločitev, za hitro reakcijo in kratek odzivni čas.
Z uvajanjem in vzpostavitvijo ERP sistemov (Enterprise Resource Planning – poslovni informacijski sistem) družbe vodijo in obvladujejo procese planiranja in razporejanja virov, nadzor nad stroški ter pregled ekonomskih kazalnikov uspešnosti.
Infor ERP LN v Sloveniji uporablja veliko število uveljavljenih podjetij.
International and globally acting companies and corporations need efficient informational systems to enable them with internal and external connections. Informational systems are supposed to assure a quick exchange of reliable information as a crucial factor in the process of efficient business decision making.
The introduction and implementation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) brings benefits to internal management processes and the determination of resources, to management costs and to the management of key performance indicators. The quality of processes and the continual improving of the processes quality management significantly affect the business efficiency. This can be notably increased through establishing, implementing and maintaining diverse standardized…

▼ This dissertation studies a series of freeway and arterial traffic modeling, estimation and control methodologies. First, it investigates the Link-Node Cell Transmission Model's (LN-CTM's) ability to model arterial traffic. The LN-CTM is a modification of the cell transmission model developed by Daganzo. The investigation utilizes traffic data collected on an arterial segment in Los Angeles, California, and a link-node cell transmission model, with some adaptations to the arterial traffic, is constructed for the studied location. The simulated flow and the simulation travel time were compared with field measurements to evaluate the modeling accuracy.Second, an algorithm for estimating turning proportions is proposed in this dissertation. The knowledge about turning proportions at street intersections is a frequent input for traffic models, but it is often difficult to measure directly. Compared with previous estimation methods used to solve this problem, the proposed method can be used with only half the detectors employed in the conventional complete detector configuration. The proposed method formulates the estimation problem as a constrained least squares problem, and a recursive solving procedure is given. A simulation study was carried out to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. In addition to addressing arterial traffic modeling and estimation problems, this dissertation also studies a freeway traffic control strategy and a freeway and arterial coordinated control strategy. It presents a coordinated control strategy of variable speed limits (VSL) and ramp metering to address freeway congestion caused by weaving effects. In this strategy, variable speed limits are designed to maximize the bottleneck flow, and ramp metering is designed to minimize travel time in a model predictive control frame work. A microscopic simulation based on the I-80 at Emeryville, California was built to evaluate the strategy, and the results showed that the traffic performance was significantly improved .Following the freeway control study, this dissertation discusses the coordinated control of freeways and arterials. In current practice, traffic controls on freeways and on arterials are independent. In order to coordinate these two systems for better performance, a control strategy covering the freeway ramp metering and the signal control at the adjacent intersection is developed. This control strategy uses upstream ALINEA, which is a well-known control algorithm, for ramp metering to locally maximize freeway throughput. For the intersection signal control, the proposed control strategy distributes green splits by taking into account both the available on-ramp space and the demands of all intersection movements. A microscopic simulation of traffic in an arterial intersection with flow discharge to a freeway on-ramp, which is calibrated using the data collected at San Jose, California, is created to evaluate the performance of the proposed control strategy. The results showed that the proposed strategy can…

▼ Current radar signal
processor architectures lack
either performance or flexibility in terms of ease of
modification
and large design time overheads. Combinations of processors and
FPGAs are typically
hard-wired together into a precisely timed and
pipelined solution to achieve a desired level of functionality
and
performance. Such a fixed processing solution is clearly not
feasible for new algorithm
evaluation or quick changes during
field tests. A more flexible solution based on a high-performance
soft-core processing architecture is proposed.
To develop such a
processing architecture, data and signal-flow characteristics of
common radar signal
processing algorithms are analysed. Each
algorithm is broken down into signal processing and
mathematical
operations. The computational requirements are then evaluated using
an abstract model
of computation to determine the relative
importance of each mathematical operation. Critical portions
of
the radar applications are identified for architecture selection
and optimisation purposes.
Built around these dominant operations,
a soft-core architecture model that is better matched to the
core
computational requirements of a radar signal
processor is proposed.
The
processor model is
iteratively refined based on the previous
synthesis as well as code profiling results. To automate this
iterative process, a software development environment was designed.
The software development environment
enables rapid architectural
design space exploration through the automatic generation of
development tools (assembler, linker, code editor, cycle accurate
emulator / simulator, programmer,
and debugger) as well as
platform independent VHDL code from an architecture description
file. Together
with the board specific HDL-based HAL files, the
design files are synthesised using the vendor
specific FPGA tools
and practically verified on a custom high performance development
board. Timing
results, functional accuracy, resource usage,
profiling and performance data are analysed and fed
back into the

from this iterative design process yielded a unique transport-based
pipelined architecture.
The proposed architecture achieves high
data throughput while providing the flexibility that
a
software-programmable device offers. The end user can thus write
custom radar algorithms in
software rather than going through a
long and complex HDL-based design. The simplicity of this
architecture enables high clock frequencies, deterministic response
times, and makes it easy to understand.
Furthermore, the
architecture is scalable in performance and functionality for a
variety of
different streaming and burst-processing related
applications.
A comparison to the Texas Instruments C66x DSP core
showed a decrease in clock cycles by a factor
between 10.8 and
20.9 for the identical radar application on the proposed
architecture over a range of
typical operating parameters. Even
with the limited clock speeds achievable on the FPGA…

Ecological behavior is the manifestation in favor of environmental issues translated into consumption situations. It may be intentional, conscious, full of self-interest or natural and unconscious. ▼ Marketisation reforms has for a long time been a recurring and debated phenomena, which has recently blossomed by the reform proposal of the Swedish Public Employment Service presented in the so-called “January-agreement”. The aim of this qualitative study is therefor to examine the reform proposal of the Swedish Public Employment Service presented in the “January-agreement” and relate this to marketisation. This will in this study be done by theory consuming of first George Sörensen theory about the impact of globalization on the welfare state, to give a broad view of the cause of marketisation. Then Patrik Halls definition of marketisation within NPM, to explain the meaning and effects of marketisation. And finally, Bo Rothsteins description of the market-equal model, to examine how the creation of legitimacy can be seen as a motive for the reform. The conclusions show that marketisation can describe the reform proposal presented in the January-agreement, which can be seen as a creation of public constructed market with a distinct client focus. Further, the market-equal model shows how the low public confidence for the Swedish Public Employment Service can be seen as a strong motive for some type of marketisation in other to create an increased legitimacy.

With a growing elderly population the age structure of the Swedish society is expected to change. Consequently, the need for service and elderly care has increased and municipalities are faced with the challenge with providing for the needs of elderly people based on better utilization of resources. The new law about freedom of choice system (LOV) allows for competition in the home help sector. Can competition according to LOV lead to an increased utilization of resources and greater efficiency in the municipal home care business? The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explain how the competition in the home care sector, according to freedom of choice, affects municipal efficiency. We also aim to explain how management control in the municipality affects the efficiency of the introduction of the choice system. This study has a positivist research philosophy, a deductive research approach, an explanatory purpose and a quantitative method. Although the freedom of choice system is a relatively unexplored area, the hypotheses are based on previous research on competitive conditions in primary care. The foundation of the study is two…

▼ Power and energy have become primary design constraints for modern processors. Power no longer scales with transistor channel length, causing power density to increase. Continued transistor scaling will require prohibitively expensive cooling technologies. This is particularly an issue in data centers, where the cost of power and cooling has a major impact on the total cost of ownership. Data centers have grown and expanded rapidly due to the advent of cloud computing and interactive web services. The unabated migration of compute to data centers means future data centers will continue to require more compute which can be cooled in a cost-effective way. As a result, architects have looked to manycore processors due to their performance on parallel workloads and energy efficiency benefits. As opposed to conventional multicore data center processors which utilize a few large out-of-order cores optimized for instruction level parallelism, manycores utilize many smaller cores optimized for throughput. The sea of smaller cores work in parallel on a problem, each working on a smaller portion of the overall problem. As a result, each core can run slower, and the same amount of work can be completed in the same amount of time using less energy.
The focus of this thesis is to understand the power and energy characteristics of manycore processors and improve their already superior energy efficiency. Execution Drafting (ExecD) is a microarchitectural mechanism that exploits commonality between identical or similar programs or threads in data centers to improve the energy efficiency of fine-grained multithreaded cores. When similar or identical threads are scheduled to the same core, a thread synchronization mechanism that attempts to synchronize the threads in time to the same instruction takes over the thread scheduling decision. Once synchronized, identical instructions from different threads are consecutively issued down the pipeline, leading to reduced activity factors on control signals and potentially data buses resulting in energy savings. Additionally, if the threads are synchronized and their code is identical, the fetch stage can be disabled for all but one of the threads, resulting in a single instruction, multiple thread-like execution with increased energy efficiency. ExecD is evaluated with a custom-built simulator and in hardware based on the implementation in the Princeton Piton
processor. Piton is a manycore research
processor designed at Princeton which implements a tile-based architecture with on-chip networks for communication. It utilizes multithreaded cores and a distributed cache-coherent memory system for throughput and implements ExecD for energy efficiency. Piton was taped-out on IBM's 32nm SOI process and is fully functional, booting full-stack Debian Linux. This thesis details a full power and energy characterization of Piton, exploring many aspects of the
processor. All data collected and the full hardware platform are open-source, providing a research platform for…

▼ Biological clocks are ubiquitous in nature; observed in almost all life forms. The role of clock is not only to synchronize the various biological activities of an organism, but also to synchronize the organism to the day/night cycle and gain the most out of sunlight. At the molecular level, a negative feedback loop is the basis of eukaryotic clocks and light triggers activity within the feedback loop affecting either the negative or the positive arm of the loop. In the current study, both these modes of light input to the clock have been investigated. Vivid (VVD) is a photoreceptor protein in the fungus Neurospora crassa and is important for photoadaptation in continuous light. VVD senses light via a flavin cofactor incorporated in a light, oxygen and voltage sensing (
LOV) domain. Light induces the formation of a covalent bond between the flavin and a conserved cysteine, which causes conformational changes with VVD that lead to its dimerization. This dimer is the signaling state of VVD and it was crystallized in this study using a Met135I:Met165I variant that increases the lifetime of the light state. The structure reveals the mechanism of light-signaling where in light induced bond formation alters hydrogen bond pattern, leading to the release of the N-terminal loop of the protein, which ultimately docks into the other subunit to form the dimer. The dimeric structure was confirmed in s olution and in the organism. Based on similarities in sequence alignments, this mechanism appears to be conserved among all fungal
LOV proteins. Cryptochrome (CRY) is the principal photoreceptor in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster that senses light via a flavin cofactor. Determination of the conformational changes associated with light exposure and the role of the flavin redox state in these conformational changes was the aim of the investigation. A trypsin based limitedproteolysis assay was developed to monitor the light state conformation of CRY. This assay in combination with mass spectral analysis, kinetic studies and mutational analysis reveals structural rearrangements in and around the C-terminal extension, which are strongly coupled to the light-induced redox changes of the flavin. Chemically reducing CRY in the dark was sufficient to replicate the structural rearrangements observed in the presence of light, which strongly indicates that the role of light is to reduce the flavin.

▼ The increasing privatization of society has lead to a new bill that has passed, that concerns primary health care. The new law (LOV) gives consumers the opportunity to choose their own health care provider and thereby letting private enterprises to the market. This case study has researched which institutionalized conditions that effect public and private health care providers in their development of a business model. The purpose of the study is to determine what kind of resources that is in the focal point for the different kind of health care providers, considering their different prerequisites. The primary empiricism has been acquired by interviews with selected members of both public and private health care providers in the county of Norrbotten in Sweden. The study will also conclude that the different institutionalized prerequisites have lead to different opportunities. A clear distinction can be seen in the private health care providers focus on health and an all inclusive package in their approach and the public health care providers focuses more on continuity and the fact that they have a long standing relation with the customer. The public provider is also trying to play “catch-up” with their private competitors, when they are shifting to a more customer orientated approach. This study will also show that with the changes that occur on the market, the old participants will be forced reevaluate their strategy to remain competitive. This will in turn drive the public and private health care providers business models to resemble each other’s more and more as the market matures, within their specific prerequisites.
