▼ Pionic fusion is the process by which two nuclei collide, undergo complete fusion, and then de-excite solely by the emission of a pion. Previously measured pionic fusion cross sections are inconsistent with known mechanisms for pion production and suggest unknown collective processes might dominate production at low energies in heavy ion collisions. In this work, an experiment was developed to make the first coincident measurement of pionic fusion for a charged pion channel of a reaction for which there are no previous measurements. The pionic fusion reaction ⁴He (55 MeV/u) + ¹²C → ¹⁶N + π⁺ was studied at the Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute. The ¹⁶N fusion residues were detected using a dE-E silicon telescope at the focal plane of the MARS spectrometer and the newly designed ParTI phoswich detector array was used to detect the charged pions. Fast-sampling digitizers recorded the waveform responses of the phoswiches which were used to identify the pions through fast vs. slow (dEE) pulse shape discrimination and through the characteristic decay of the muon daughters of the implanted pions. An energy calibration method for light charged particles including charged pions is developed for the ParTI phoswich detectors and the geometrical and particle identification efficiencies of the array are explored. The "muon decay trigger" which was implemented in the firmware of the onboard FPGA in the digitizers is discussed and its ability to increase the pion event selectivity is characterized. A detailed characterization of the transmission efficiency and particle identification capabilities at the focal plane of MARS is also given. Cross sections are reported for all species detected at the focal plane of MARS and upper limits for the cross section of pionic fusion based on the measurement of ¹⁶N in MARS and charged pions in the ParTI array are reported. ▼ Purpose: Advances in the field of radiation oncology have dramatically improved our ability to effectively target cancer cells. Techniques such as three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy allow the dose to be effectively shaped to maximize radiation delivered to the target while minimizing the dose to the surrounding tissue. It is vital to ensure a precise dose is delivered to the target volume and most of the above techniques mandate pre-treatment verification of planned fluences. This could be achieved by several dosimeters available in radiotherapy such as ionization chamber, diode, TLD, 2D Array, etc. Specifically, stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) uses small fields which mandate the use of miniaturized detectors for pre-treatment verification. Alanine and nanoDot are new classes of dosimeters that need to be characterized for pre-treatment verification. The aim of this project was to evaluate multiple detectors for SABR patient verification and develop a spherical array detector for verifying the dose delivered to cancer patients undergoing stereotactic radiotherapy/radiosurgery or conventional radiotherapy involving non-coplanar beams. Methods: Prior to SABR pre-treatment verification, all detectors were assessed for dose linearity, energy, and directional and dose rate dependence. The Bruker EleXsys E500 EPR spectrometer of 9.5MHz was used to read the alanine pellet dosimeters signals; Harshaw QS 5500 automatic TLD reader was used for reading the TLDs and Dose 1 electrometer was used to read the charge response of microDiamond (PTW60019). Microstar Reader from Landauer Inc. was utilized to study the signal of the irradiated nanoDot OSL dosimeters while PC Electrometer from SunNuclear was used to collect the signal response of IN5626-diode distributed on the surface of the designed phantom. All irradiations were performed using a Clinac 21iX at 6 MV x-ray beam. A 3-D novel spherical phantom was designed using Via card software. In total, 120 holes were created on the surface of the phantom that allows the insertion of diodes (IN5626). The phantom was printed using CreatBot 3-D printing machine. Also to check the suitability of the evaluated detectors, 3-D phantoms were designed for each detector and were placed separately inside an indigenous Rod phantom made of Perspex to perform SABR pre-treatment patient verification. The statistical analysis, linear and curve fitting was done using OriginPro® 2018 (Origin Lab® Corporation). Results: The relationship between dose measured using Alanine, TLD100H, nanoDot and microDiamond dosimeters, as well as a diode (IN5626), followed a linear fit of R2 = 0.9993, R2 = 0.9999, R2 = 1, R2 = 0.9999) and no significant difference between dose rate and energy was observed for the detectors. ▼ Advances in synchrotron radiation light source technology have opened new lines of inquiry in material science, biology, and everything in between. However, x-ray detector capabilities must advance in concert with light source technology to fully realize experimental possibilities. X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) place particularly large demands on the capabilities of detectors, and developments towards diffraction-limited storage ring sources also necessitate detectors capable of measuring very high flux [1–3]. The detector described herein builds on the Mixed Mode Pixel Array Detector (MM-PAD) framework, developed previously by our group to perform high dynamic range imaging, and the Adaptive Gain Integrating Pixel Detector (AGIPD) developed for the European XFEL by a collaboration between Deustsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI), the University of Hamburg, and the University of Bonn, led by Heinz Graafsma [4, 5]. The feasibility of combining adaptive gain with charge removal techniques to increase dynamic range in XFEL experiments is assessed by simulating XFEL scatter with a pulsed infrared laser. The strategy is incorporated into pixel prototypes which are evaluated with direct current injection to simulate very high incident x-ray flux. A fully functional 16x16 pixel hybrid integrating x-ray detector featuring several different pixel architectures based on the prototypes was developed. This dissertation describes its operation and characterization. To extend dynamic range, charge is removed from the integration node of the front-end amplifier without interrupting integration. The number of times this process occurs is recorded by a digital counter in the pixel. The parameter limiting full well is thereby shifted from the size of an integration capacitor to the depth of a digital counter. The result is similar to that achieved by counting pixel array detectors, but the integrators presented here are designed to tolerate a sustained flux >10¹¹ x-rays/pixel/second. In addition, digitization of residual analog signals allows sensitivity for single x-rays or low flux signals. Pixel high flux linearity is evaluated by direct exposure to an unattenuated synchrotron source x-ray beam and flux measurements of more than 10¹⁰ 9.52 keV x-rays/pixel/s are made. Detector sensitivity to small signals is evaluated and dominant sources of error are identified. These new pixels boast multiple orders of magnitude improvement in maximum sustained flux over the MM-PAD, which is capable of measuring a sustained flux in excess of 10⁸ x-rays/pixel/second while maintaining sensitivity to smaller signals, down to single x-rays. ▼ The Telescope Array Project was designed to observe cosmic rays with energies greaterthan 1018 eV. Its goals are to study the physics of cosmic rays by measuring their anisotropy,composition, and energy spectrum. This work makes a monocular measurement of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum and analyzes the physics produced from that spectrum.The flux of cosmic rays observed on Earth follows a power law over 12 decades inenergy and 32 decades in flux. At the highest energies, the spectrum has detailed structure.Studying these features can tell us about the astrophysics of the production and propagationof cosmic rays. First, it can tell us about the sources of cosmic rays such as they capableof producing a power law spectrum and the maximum energy of cosmic rays that they canproduce. Second, the acceleration mechanisms that can boost cosmic rays to ultra highenergies can be studied. Third, the spectral features themselves can tell us about theirpossible cause for formation. For example, the ankle feature in the ultra high energy regimecan tell us if it is the galactic-extragalactic transition or if it is due to e+e− pair production.Fourth, the energy losses that cosmic rays incur can tell us about their physical interactionsduring propagation. Studying the physics of the cosmic ray spectrum in the ultra highenergy regime with data from the Telescope Array Project is the goal of this analysis.The Telescope Array Project consists of three fluorescence detectors overlooking an arrayof 507 scintillation surface detectors. Due to their extremely low flux at these energies,cosmic rays can only be observed indirectly via an extensive air shower produced when theycollide with the nucleus of an atom in the Earth’s atmosphere. These charged secondaryparticles produce fluorescence light. The array of surface detectors observes the lateralfootprint of the extensive air shower when it reaches the ground. The fluorescence detectorsobserve the longitudinal profile of this fluorescence light. This thesis analyzes the data fromone of the fluorescence detectors, Middle Drum, using a different geometry reconstructiontechnique, the Time versus Angle geometry.The results of this analysis show an ultra high energy cosmic ray spectrum that isconsistent with the results previously published by the High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes)experiment, the Telescope Array surface detectors, and other experiments in this energyregion. Due to insufficient statistics at this date, the GZK cutoff cannot be confirmed inthis analysis, but a fit shows the cutoff to be at log10 E (E/eV) = 19.56 ± 0.36, with aspectral index after the cutoff of -3.86 ± 2.0. This is within the range determined previouslyby other measurements. This analysis shows that the feature known as the ankle occurs atlog10 E (E/eV) = 18.63 ± 0.09, with a spectral index of -3.27 ± 0.07 before the ankle and aspectral index of -2.81 ± 0.10 after the ankle. ▼ In this dissertation, the design, fabrication and characterization of advanced terahertz (THz) quasi-optical detectors and focal-plane arrays (FPAs) based on monolithically integrated heterostructure backward diodes (HBDs) are presented for THz sensing and imaging applications. In order to develop highly sensitive room temperature THz detectors and FPAs, zero bias Sb-HBDs are attractive to be employed owing to their relatively high curvature coefficient (γ), high sensitivity, low noise equivalent power (NEP), high cut-off frequency, and room temperature operation. To develop high performance detectors and FPAs, HBDs with submicron-scale device areas are preferred for their high detector bandwidth. Since submicron scale HBDs have high device impedances at terahertz frequencies, lens-coupled planar folded dipole antennas (FDAs) which have a wide range impedance tuning capacity at THz frequencies are adopted in the detector design to achieve conjugate impedance matching for maximum detector sensitivities without additional matching networks. For a prototype demonstration, HBDs with 0.16 μm² and 0.1 μm² active areas have been employed for the detector design at 200 and 585 GHz respectively. Simulation results show that maximum detector sensitivities of 21,000 V/W at 200 GHz and 9,500 V/W at 585 GHz could be achieved. The corresponding minimum NEPs (NEPs_min) of these detectors are estimated to be 0.42 pW/√Hz and 1.3 pW/√Hz respectively. In this work, HBDs are integrated with FDAs using submicron-scale airbridges and anode-to-mesa spacing to minimize parasitic capacitance and frequency dependent spreading resistance respectively. On the basis of modeling results, a novel, scalable, and robust fabrication process has been developed using mix-and-match electron beam and optical lithography. A record high zero bias curvature co-efficient of -58V^-1 has been obtained for HBDs developed using this process. The measurements of the lens-coupled HBD detector with a 0.7× 0.7 μm² device area show that a peak detector sensitivity of approximately 2400 V/W and a NEP_min of 2.14 pW/√Hz have been obtained at 170 GHz without applying anti-reflection coating on the silicon lens.If an antireflection coating was used, a sensitivity of approximately 3500 V/W and a NEP_min of 1.48 pW/√Hz are projected. The radiation patterns of the quasi-optical detector in both the E- and H-planes have been measured and good agreement has been achieved between simulation and measurement. Finally, for imaging applications, the single element design has been expanded into full 2D THz FPAs and the off-axis radiation patterns, angular resolution, and mutual coupling have been studied. The reported approach using monolithically integrated heterostructure backward tunneling diodes is promising for developing high performance and compact detectors and FPAs for millimeter-wave and THz sensing and imaging applications. ▼ Els laboratoris del sector adober tenen la necessitat de determinar espècies aniòniques en diferents mostres. Tot i que la cromatografia iònica és actualment la millor tècnica per a aquesta anàlisi, en el sector de la pell no existien fins ara procediments basats en ella. Aquesta tesi es basa en el desenvolupament de mètodes cromatogràfics innovadors, amb una fase estacionària d'intercanvi iònic i un detector PDA, per determinar anions d'interès en la industria de la pell. L'estudi consta de dos blocs. El primer es centra en la determinació dels anions que contribueixen a la salinitat i el segon bloc correspon a la quantificació de traces de crom hexavalent en pell i en els béns de consum de cuir. (El crom VI es determina com a anió cromat). L'anàlisi dels anions responsables de la salinitat (clorur, nitrat, sulfat, fosfat, formiat, acetat...) inclou dues línies d'investigació, segons el sistema de detecció, UV directa o UV indirecta. La detecció directa no permet l'anàlisi d'analits no absorbents, com és el cas del clorur i el sulfat, i és per aquest motiu que també s'utilitza la detecció indirecta (adequada a tots els anions). Les fases mòbils emprades són biftalat potàssic (detecció indirecta) i sulfat sòdic (detecció directa). Els mètodes s'apliquen amb èxit a diverses mostres: pells, aigües i productes químics. Fins ara, la determinació de traces de crom hexavalent en pells es duia a terme mitjançant la Norma ISO 17075:2007, basada en el mètode clàssic fotocolorimètric de la difenilcarbazida, i que presenta una sèrie de limitacions. En la segona part de la tesi es desenvolupa i valida un mètode HPLC que permet l'anàlisi directa del Cr (VI) en l'extracte, sense filtració per cartutx SPE. L'extracció del crom es realitza amb un tampó fosfat a pH 7,5-8,0, d'acord amb el mètode colorimètric. L'eluent és un electròlit de sulfat amònic a pH 8,0. L'estudi comparatiu entre la norma ISO 17075:2007 i el nou mètode conclou que l'HPLC és una millor alternativa per a la determinació de crom (VI). El mètode cromatogràfic escurça el procediment de la norma colorimètrica, disminueix la càrrega de treball, redueix la quantitat de residus de laboratori i proporciona resultats més precisos. La cromatografia iònica és capaç de mesurar la concentració de crom (VI) de mostres de fins a 3 mg/kg (límit de quantificació establert per la Comissió Europea). Aquest nou procediment s'ha publicat com a norma ISO 17075-2:2017 el febrer d'aquest mateix any. ▼ Resveratrol (3, 5, 4’–trans-hydroxystilbene) has been used since immemorial times in traditional medicine as an antimicrobial and antioxidant compound. Recent discoveries demonstrated other health benefits for this phytoalexin, such as anticancer and anti-ageing activities, making it desirable for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries. This polyphenolic is a plant secondary metabolite mainly produced by peanuts and grapevines. Although plant cells were traditionally used as a biological alternative for resveratrol production, in recent years, recombinant microorganisms, such as yeast and bacteria, were proposed to improve resveratrol production. The present work describes resveratrol production in two recombinant microorganisms – Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) – its optimization of production in bioreactor using Design of Experiments (DoE) and the impact on cell physiology and plasmid stability, which was assessed by flow cytometry and real-time qPCR, respectively. For resveratrol quantification, a liquid-liquid extraction from culture media was performed using ethyl acetate and then a method for quantification in High Performance Liquid Chromatography – Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD) was validated. In order to assess which recombinant microorganism yielded higher resveratrol production, the influence of medium composition, pH, temperature, agitation, precursor concentration and optical density (OD600) at the addition of precursor were evaluated for resveratrol production in shake flask using E. coli and S. cerevisiae. The data obtained were used to create a DoE approach in order to optimize resveratrol production in bioreactor. The bioprocess was monitored using the HPLC-DAD method for resveratrol quantification, flow cytometry to assess cellular viability and real-time qPCR to evaluate plasmid segregational instability. Shake flasks screening assays revealed a 30 times higher resveratrol yield by E. coli (about 100 μg/mL) when compared to S. cerevisiae (3.17 μg/mL), which led to the choice of the first microorganism for the scale-up optimization studies. Only the factors that had the highest impact on resveratrol production were considered for the DoE approach: temperature, pH, precursor concentration and optical density (OD600) at the addition of precursor. A Central Composite Design, rotatable and full fractioned was used, which allowed the obtention of 159.96 μg/mL of resveratrol. The population of depolarized cells varied according to the conditions used, which sometimes resulted in a 10 % difference between higher and lower production assays. Plasmid segregational instability had also been observed and variations in the values of plasmid copy number (PCN) were noticed between 22 and 30 hours of fermentation, with the highest PCN values obtained at 30 hours, when also the highest amounts of resveratrol were obtained. These separations are often pushed to their limits in terms of the number of analytes that can be sufficiently resolved from one another, particularly when a quantitative analysis of these compounds is needed. Very often, complicated methods or new technology is required to provide adequate separation of samples arising from a variety of fields such as metabolomics, environmental science, food analysis, etc. An often overlooked means for improving analysis is the use of chemometric data analysis techniques. Particularly, the use of chemometric curve resolution techniques can mathematically resolve analyte signals that may be overlapped in the instrumental data. The use of chemometric techniques facilitates quantitation, pattern recognition, or any other desired analyses. Unfortunately, these methods have seen little use outside of traditionally chemometrics focused research groups. In this dissertation, we attempt to show the utility of one of these methods, multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS), to liquid chromatography as well as its application to more advanced separation techniques. First, a general characterization of the performance of MCR-ALS for the analysis of liquid chromatography-diode array detection (LC-DAD) data is accomplished. It is shown that under a wide range of conditions (low chromatographic resolution, low signal-to-noise, and high similarity between analyte spectra), MCR-ALS is able to increase the number of quantitatively analyzable peaks. This increase is up to five-fold in many cases. Second, a novel methodology for MCR-ALS analysis of comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC x LC) is described. This method, called two dimensional assisted liquid chromatography (2DALC), aims to improve quantitation in LC x LC by combining the advantages of both one-dimensional and two dimensional chromatographic data. We show that 2DALC can provide superior quantitation to both LC x LC and one dimensional LC under certain conditions. Finally, we apply MCR-ALS to an LC x LC analysis of fourteen furanocoumarins in three apiaceous vegetables. The optimal implementation of MCR-ALS and subsequent integration was determined. For these data, simply performing MCR-ALS on the two dimensional chromatogram and manually integrating the results proved to be the superior method. These results demonstrate the usefulness of these curve resolution techniques as a compliment to advanced chromatographic techniques. Advisors/Committee Members: Sarah C Rutan.

▼ The development of new technologies and the advancement of existing technical expertise can allow for dramatic improvements to be realized in analytical instrumentation. The development of an integrating solid-state ion detector, designed to have a high sensitivity as well as maintaining a high-level of stability, is described and evaluated. Several versions of the charge-transimpedance amplifier (CTIA) technology were constructed with different operating features. The CTIA-1 is a 32-pixel array detector designed for mass spectrometry. It has the capability to simultaneously detect multiple ion channels with a detection limit less than 100 ions. The CTIA-2 detector features an independent selectable gain for each detection channel. The CTIA-2 is a 4-channel device designed for ion mobility. Further design features were built into the CTIA-5 such as differential noise reduction capabilities.The CTIA-1 technology was evaluated for use in isotope ratio mass spectrometry on a custom-built Mattauch-Herzog mass spectrometer. An evaluation was conducted in terms of the detector sensitivity, stability, accuracy, precision, resolution, and mass bias. The CTIA-2 was tested on a sector mass spectrometer for its response to low ion currents of both positive and negative ions. The detector stability, its accuracy, and its precision were studied.The technique of ion mobility spectrometry is rapidly growing, as it is the main technology used for the detection of explosives at security checkpoints. The need to improve the sensitivity of existing ion mobility instruments has led to the exploration of using the CTIA detector in ion mobility instruments. Improvements in sensitivity of two to three orders of magnitude have been demonstrated using the described CTIA detectors. Additional applications that use ion mobility instruments for the detection of analytes have been presented, the chemical mapping of a halogen-contaminated sand bed, the detection of pesticides, as well as the detection of TNT in drinking water.Results indicate that the CTIA detector technology is well suited for use in both mass spectrometry and ion mobility. The sensitive and stable multi-array CTIA detectors perform well in isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Ion mobility instruments of all types can benefit from the added sensitivity supplied by this technology. Advisors/Committee Members: Denton, M. ▼ Label-free chemical imaging provides the ability to probe chemical structure without interference from dyes or other contrast agents which potentially alter the system being studied. Two emerging, non-invasive spectroscopic methods with significant potential include the use of quantum cascade laser technology for mid-infrared spectral imaging and diffuse Raman tomography for three dimensional chemical analysis. In this thesis, we constructed and evaluated two analytical instruments which represent the first steps toward realizing these technologies. First, a discrete frequency imaging microscope that uses a tunable quantum cascade laser (QCL) source and an uncooled bolometer camera is described. Its performance is compared to a commercial Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) instrument, and a significant signal to noise advantage over conventional sources was observed when using a spatial filter aperture on the order of the wavelength of light (10μm). We further demonstrate this advantage by illustrating supersampling point mapping which is not achievable with conventional sources. Second, we present experimental results and theoretical considerations for Raman tomography measurements. Using a fiber-coupled Raman spectrometer, spectra were acquired from Teflon spheres embedded in an Intralipid-based tissue-mimicking sample. The instrument’s source-detector collection angles were systematically varied to achieve multiple diffuse projections. Two light fluence modeling methods, radiative transport calculation and Monte Carlo simulation, were compared. Reconstruction of the size and position of buried targets was attempted via an iterative modified-Tikhonov minimization algorithm without the use of spatial priors. The accuracy of these reconstructions was validated using computed tomography (CT) images. We found that although radiative transport methods provide a good first approximation for reconstructions, Monte Carlo methods may have a higher capacity for more accurately modeling the propagation of directionalized light sources over short distances (<1cm). This work illustrates a proof of principle for both technologies as well as providing a guide to future instrumentation development. Advisors/Committee Members: Bhargava, Rohit (advisor).

▼ This diploma thesis is concerned with determination anthocyanins dyes in elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.). In theoretical part there is described general characterization of the plant, its chemical composition, short view of elderberry breeding and possibilities of usage in food and medical industry. Bigger attention is paid to anthocyanins dyes. There is described their characterization, occurrence, factors that have an impact on their stability. Biosynhesis of the pigments and metabolism, benefit effects and their usage in food chemistry are then shortly sumarized. Methods of determination of anthocyanins are discused too. Next chapter deals with high performance liquid chromatography. At the end of theoretical part, there is sumarized findings of anthocyan dyes analysis by expert scientists in various matrix. In experimental part, total of 16 species of elderberry were analyzed. These species are from research and breeding institute of pomology in Holovousy. The dyes were identification and quantification by high performace liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector. Detection wavelenght was 520 nm. Gradient of mobile phase was optimilized because of shortening analyses time and resolution improvement. Four dyes were identified by HPLC: cyanidin-3-sambubioside, cyanidin-3-glukoside, cyanidin-3,5-diglukoside a cyanidin-3-sambubioside-5-glukoside. Total amount of anthocyanins ranged from 33627167,0 to 5525284,0 mAU•min-1. The most anthocyanins dyes were determined in Mammut species (33627167,0 mAU•min-1), the lowest amount was measured in Aurea species (5525284,0 mAU•min-1). The most abundant anthocyanin in all species of eldeberry fruit except Haschebrg and Aurea species was cyanidin-3-sambubioside. The concentrations of cynidin-3-glucoside in all of the berries were quantified using regression equation of calibration curve. Mammut species had the most amount of this anthocyan (0,486 mg•ml-1) and the lowest amount had Aurea species (0,033 mg•ml-1). ▼ Semiconductor neutron detector design, fabrication and testing are all performed at Kansas State University (KSU). The most prevalent neutron detectors built by the KSU Semiconductor Materials And Radiological Technologies Laboratory (SMART Lab) are comprised of silicon diodes with [superscript]6LiF as a neutron converter material. Neutron response testing and calibration of the detectors is performed in a neutron detector test facility. The facility utilizes diffraction with a pyrolytic graphite (PG) monochromator to produce a diffracted neutron beam at the northwest beamport of the KSU Training Research Isotope production General Atomics (TRIGA) Mark-II nuclear reactor. A 2-D neutron beam monitor can also be used in conjunction with the test facility for active calibrations. Described in the following work are the design, construction and operation of a neutron detector test facility and a 2-D neutron detection array. The diffracted neutron beam at the detector test facility has been characterized to yield a neutron beam with an average Gaussian energy of 0.0253 eV. The diffracted beam yields a flux of 1.2x10[superscript]4 neutrons/cm[superscript]2/s at 100 kW of reactor power. The PG monochromator is diffracting on the (002) plane that has been positioned at a Bragg angle of 15.5 degrees. The 2-D neutron detection array has been characterized for uniform pixel response and uniform neutron detection efficiency. The 2-D 5x5 array of neutron detectors with a neutron detection efficiency of approximately 0.5 percent has been used as a beam monitor when performing detector testing. The amplifier circuits for the 5x5 array were designed at the KSU Electronics Design Lab (EDL) and were coupled to a LabVIEW field-programmable gate array that is read out by a custom LabVIEW virtual instrument. The virtual instrument has been calibrated to produce a pixel response that varies by less than two percent from pixel to pixel. The array has been used for imaging and active monitoring of the diffracted neutron beam at the detector test facility. The following work is part of on-going research to develop various types of solid state semiconductor neutron detectors. Advisors/Committee Members: Douglas S. McGregor.

Les communications basées sur le principe du beamforming imposent de concevoirdes systèmes complexes utilisant un grand nombre de frontaux radiofréquences (RF). Pour le bon fonctionnement du système, chaque élément doit pouvoir être dans sa zone optimale de travail, ce qui doit être aussi le cas pour l’amplificateur de puissance (PA) dont la linéarité et la puissance dépendent de l’adaptation de sortie. L’impédance de charge de l’amplificateur, qui correspond à un des éléments rayonnants du réseau d’antennes, peut subir des variations en fonction de son environnement (TOS) et détériorer les performances globales du système. Au final, le signal distribué sur chaque antenne pour former le faisceau global doit être contrôlé et maîtrisé en phase et en amplitude pour garantir une bonne communication.Les travaux de thèse se situent dans ce contexte et portent sur la recherche denouvelles topologies, ainsi que l’élaboration de blocs élémentaires, pour créer une nouvelle architecture d’amplificateur de puissance robuste à son environnement. L'un des principaux défis est le contrôle de la phase du PA et le maintien de ses performances RF en fonction des variations du processus de fabrication (PVT). Un autre défi consiste à réaliser un PA à haute efficacité, tout en maintenant une très bonne linéarité, ce qui constitue une rupture vis-à-vis du traditionnel compromis à trouver entre le haut rendement et la grande linéarité. Dans de telles conditions, le contrôle de phase du PA constitue un avantage majeur.Une première étape de ses travaux a consisté à proposer une approche globale de laconception du PA dans son environnement et ainsi quantifier l’impact des variations de l’impédance de charge du PA sur ses performances RF (gain, déphasage) en présence d’un réseau d’antennes. Une fois les points sensibles identifiés, plusieurs architectures de PA ont été envisagées pour adresser le ou les problèmes.Une première solution avec un PA autonome a permis d’améliorer la protection vis-àvis des variations de TOS d’antenne. Plusieurs topologies de PA dérivées de cette solution ont ensuite permis d’adresser les nouvelles problématiques de contrôle de la phase et de l’ajustement de la fréquence de fonctionnement. Ces architectures de PA intégrant les nouveaux concepts développés au cours de la thèse ont été implémentées dans les technologies 130nm SiGe et 65nm CMOS-SOI de STMicroelectronics. Les résultats de mesure ont permis de valider l’architecture du PA autonome avec l’ajustement de la fréquence de fonctionnement et la détection de phase et de tension.Cette approche de conception ne se limite pas aux communications 5G et peut êtrefacilement étendue à d'autres fréquences et pour d’autres applications telles que les télécommunications par satellites (SATCOM). Elle n’est pas dépendante du choix de la technologie silicium et peut être utilisée pour d’autres circuits RF tels que les amplificateurs faible bruit.

L’apparition de la segmentation électrique des détecteurs au GeHP et de l’électronique numérique a ouvert la voie à des applications prometteuses, telles que le tracking γ, l’imagerie γ ou la mesure bas bruit de fond, pour lesquelles une connaissance fine de la réponse du détecteur est un atout. L’IPHC a développé une table de scan utilisant un faisceau collimaté, qui sonde la réponse d’un détecteur dans tout son volume en fonction de la localisation de l’interaction. Elle est conçue pour utiliser une technique innovante de scan 3D, le Pulse Shape Comparison Scan, qui a été d’abord simulée afin de démontrer son efficacité. Un détecteur AGATA a été scanné de manière approfondie. Des scan 2D classiques ont permis, entre autres, de mettre en évidence des effets locaux de modification de la collection des charges, liés à la segmentation. Pour la première fois, une base de données 3D, complète, de formes d’impulsions fonction de la position d’interaction a été établie. Elle permettra notamment d’améliorer les performances du spectromètre AGATA.

Recent developments of electrical segmentation of HPGe detectors, coupled with digital electronics have led to promising applications such as γ-ray tracking, γ-ray imaging or low-background measurements which will benefit from a fine knowledge of the detector response. The IPHC has developed a new scanning table which uses a collimated γ-ray beam to investigate the detector response as a function of the location of the γ-ray interaction. It is designed to use the Pulse Shape Comparison Scan technique, which has been simulated in order to prove its efficiency. An AGATA detector has been thoroughly scanned. 2D classical scans brought out, for example, local charge collection modification effects such as charge sharing, due to the segmentation. For the first time, a 3D, complete pulse-shape database has been established. It will especially allow to improve the overall AGATA array performances.

The absorptance in vertical nanowire (nw) arrays is typically dominated by three optical phenomena: radial mode resonances, near-field evanescent wave coupling, and Fabry–Perot (F-P) mode resonances. The contribution of these optical phenomena to GaAs, InP and InAs nw absorptance was simulated using the finite element method. The study compared the absorptance between finite and semi-infinite nws with varying geometrical parameters, including the nw diameter (D), array period (P), and nw length (L). Simulation results showed that the resonance peak wavelength of the HE1n radial modes linearly red-shifted with increasing D. The absorptance and spectral width of the resonance peaks increased as L increased, with an absorptance plateau for very long nws that depended on D and P. Near-field coupling between neighbouring nanowires (nws) was observed to increase with increasing diameter to period ratio (D/P). The effect of F-P modes was more pronounced for shorter nws and weakly coupled light. Based on the collective observation of the correlation between nw geometry and optical phenomena in GaAs, InP, and InAs nw arrays, a periodic array of vertical InSb nws was designed for photodetectors in the low-atmospheric absorption window (λ = 3-5 μm) within the mid-wavelength infrared (MWIR) spectrum (λ = 3-8 μm). Simulations, using the finite element method, were implemented to optimize the nw array geometrical parameters (D, P, and L) for high optical absorptance (~0.8), which exceeded that of a thin film of equal thickness. The results further showed that the HE1n resonance wavelengths in InSb nw arrays can be tuned by adjusting D and P, thus enabling multispectral absorption throughout the near infrared (NIR) to MWIR region. Optical absorptance was investigated for a practical photodetector consisting of a vertical InSb nw array embedded in bisbenzocyclobutene (BCB) as a support layer for an ultrathin Ni contact layer. Polarization sensitivity of the photodetector was examined. Lastly, how light flux enters the nw top and sidewalls on HE11 resonance was investigated.
