▼ Recreation
demand such as national park visitation is influenced by various social, demographic, and economic factors. These key variables are important indicators in predicting future trends and provide beneficial information about potential park visitors for managers and planners. As parks and protected areas become impacted by socio-economic changes, it is important to understand the relationship between specific factors of recreation participation and national park visitation. From a practitioner perspective, recreation agencies require multi-scale levels of information in order to address visitor and facility needs. While site-based research or using disaggregated models are helpful to satisfy specific purposes for a park, they often do not provide this information in spatially distributed data on a statewide or regional level. Recreation planners and managers need recreation
demand forecasts at levels of spatial aggregations.
This study tried to identify the spatial relationships between national park visitation and its associated factors using large aggregated data. Guided by the idea of opportunity theory and Pigram???s conceptual framework, this study empirically investigated what and how factors associated with national park visitation influence
demand within the Texas boundary. Specifically, this study developed a spatial regression model of national park visitation
demand in Texas using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR). This model estimated the strength of the relationship between visitation and selected demographic, socioeconomic and situational factors. Methodologically, traditional regression models (e.g., OLS) yield only a single estimate in a relationship. In comparison, GWR allows an estimate of the spatial variation of the relationship within the study area. Several private and public data sources were used in the model to create reliably aggregated data. Several explanatory variables, e.g., poverty rate, family structures, recreation-related spending patterns and level of education, were hypothesized to influence the level of national park visitation for spatially varying relationships across the study area. From a methodological perspective, this study found interesting methodological implications (e.g., rethinking the traditional regression model for recreation
demand estimation) and the potential associated with the use of spatial statistics to analyze the relationships between recreation participation and societal factors. This research demonstrated the importance of including spatial variables as part of recreation
demand analysis. Relatively little work has used spatial models in the field of recreation. The results of this study demonstrate the usefulness of spatial analysis for detecting various relationships within the state over traditional statistical analysis.

▼ Forecasting water demand requires quantifying potential relationships between relevant statistics and ambient conditions such as water price and weather. Dr Enouy (2018) demonstrates that discrete histograms can be parameterized into continuous probability density functions. Consistent parametrization allows regression analysis to be applied to the PDF statistics, thus able to reproduce PDFs through time.
This work briefly introduces Dr Enouy’s (2018) methodology and mainly investigates the applicability of this method. It formalizes the implementation details of residential water application in terms of data culling, optimization and regression analysis. A modified version of this method is employed as an adaptation to the analysis of commercial water demand.
This thesis also discusses the possibility of employing the scheme of software development, to assure the robustness and correctness of this implementation.

▼ In the first condition six hens responded on concurrent schedule with two variable interval 60-s schedules leading to 2 s of access to wheat. This gave estimates of bias resulting from any uncontrolled differences between the two schedules (i.e., inherent bias). Then the same hens responded on concurrent chain schedules of reinforcement for two different durations of access to food: 2 s and 8 s. The initial links were both variable interval 60-s schedules and the terminal links were equal fixed ratio schedules. Over Conditions 2 to 8, the response requirement in the terminal links was varied over 1 to 128. Response and time ratios in the initial links showed responding and time allocation was greater on the key associated with the 8 s duration reinforcer, showing a preference for that terminal link, even when any inherent bias was removed. These preferences were generally greater the larger the response requirement. Preference followed the 8-s reinforcer when the key associated with that reinforcer was changed in Conditions 9 and 10, and was greater the larger the response requirement in these conditions. Thus increases in response requirement increased preference for the longer duration reinforcer. The terminal-link length increased equally for both food durations with increases in response requirement up to fixed ratio 32 for most hens. With fixed ratios of 64 and 128 there were some unequal length terminal links and these were associated with preference changes, with greater inequality between the terminal link lengths giving greater preference for the shorter terminal link. The study cannot separate out the effects of terminal link length and response requirement on preference, both most likely contributed to the preference changes. In the terminal links there were higher overall response rates and shorter post-entry pauses with the shorter duration of reinforcer (2 s) at the smaller fixed ratio values. These data follow the pattern seen in studies of fixed ratio performance, where less preferred reinforcers have given higher overall response rates and shorter post-reinforcement pauses at smaller fixed ratio values. These data indicate that differences in overall response rate in do not reflect the preference seen in the initial links.

Koska kyseessä on start-up -yritys, pelkästään kyseisen alan toteaminen epäkannattavaksi markkina-alueeksi on yritystä helpottava asia.
Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin teemahaastattelua, joka muodostui kolmen teeman ympärille. Nämä teemat olivat on-demand -palvelut, hyvinvointipalvelut ja rekrytoiminen. Haastatteluun osallistui neljä hotellinjohtajaa ja kaksi vuoropäällikköä viidestä Pirkanmaalla sijaitsevasta hotellista.
Tarvekartoitusta tehtäessä tärkeää on havaita ne seikat, missä yrityksellä (tässä tapauksessa hotellilla) on ongelmia. Näiden seikkojen havaitsemisen avulla on mahdollista miettiä, miten toimeksiantajan palvelu voisi auttaa heitä, tai miten palvelua pitäisi kehittää, jotta se olisi houkutteleva asiakkaalle. Nämä asiat saatiin haastatteluiden avulla selvästi kartoitettua.
Opinnäytetyön tutkimusosassa korostui selkeästi palvelun tarpeettomuus keskustan alueella sijaitsevissa hotelleissa. Paljon liikematkailijoita puoleensa vetävät hotellit ovat lähellä palveluita, mikä tekee vieraista erittäin itseohjautuvia. Lisäksi mainittiin lukuisat yhteistyökumppanit, jotka järjestävät hyvinvointipalveluita hotellivieraille. Nämä seikat tekevät toimeksiantajan palvelusta vähemmän puoleensavetävämmän hotellien näkökulmasta. Palvelun käyttöönottoa tukivat esimerkiksi yhteistyökumppanien rajalliset aukioloajat ja hyvinvointipalveluiden suuri kysyntä.
The aim of this thesis was to carry out a needs assessment of Vivo Warriors’ digital wellness service and to find out how big the need for this service is in the hotel business. The thesis focused on detecting the factors that both support and oppose the introduction of the service. The aim was to find out the extent of the need and to provide the commissioner with suggestions for development. Since Vivo Warriors is a start-up business, the mere fact of finding the industry in question to be unprofitable is an attempt to ease the business.
The research method in the thesis was a theme interview, that was built around three themes. These themes were on-demand services, wellness services and recruiting. The interview was attended by four hotel managers and two shift managers from five hotels in Pirkanmaa.
When it comes to assessing needs, it is important to find out where the company (in this case the hotel) has problems. By detecting these facts, it is possible to consider how the commissioner’s service could help the hotels or how the service should be developed to make it attractive to the customer. These matters were clearly mapped through the interviews.
The empirical part of the thesis highlighted that Vivo Warriors’ service for the hotels in the city center is unnecessary. Many hotels…

▼ This overall goal of this research is to examine and update U.S. at-home household demand estimates for seafood (including species and generic products) that can be used in policy formulation (by both the private and public sector). As such, this study estimated quantity-based household demand functions for seafood in aggregate, by generic product form (fresh, frozen, and prepared), and primary species. Given that the role of quality has been shown to significantly influence expenditures and seafood demand, this paper also seeks to incorporate the household quality choice into the demand model. In order to help to tailor the market strategy, this study also estimates household seafood demand in a complete demand system framework to track the substitution and complementation between seafood product forms and other protein sources. Emphasis is also given to the influence of socioeconomic factors on the demand for quantity. This study uses 2005-2006 NOAA Fisheries Seafood Consumption Survey data which consisted of 10798 completed interviews. In the complete demand system analyses, comparison of model results with a quality proxy, without a quality proxy, and with a quality adjusted price were examined to determine a ‘preferable’ means for incorporating household quality choice. Results suggest that quality does play an important role in seafood demand. As for the quantity-based demand equations, a bivariate model was applied to simultaneously investigate the quality variation and consumer preference. As an outcome of this model, and based on the hypothesis that demand for quality is proportional to the level of aggregation, the study examines whether the demand for quality diminishes in relation to the level of disaggregation. The bivariate model utilized the maximum likelihood method to successfully deal with a truncation problem as well as difficulties of unobserved unit price values.

▼ This thesis presents a forecasting model for the propane consumption within the residential sector. In this research we explore the dynamic behavior of different variables that affect the propane consumption and develop a forecasting model. The significant factors that had an impact on the propane consumption in houses were heating degree days of that area, wind speed, precipitation and the size of the houses. However in case of mobile homes only the heating degree days had significance. The behavior of the customers was assumed to be static. This model is based on multiple regression methods. The data was collected from a local propane company in West Texas. Different combinations of months were used in this model to study the propane consumption behavior for each month. These different studies were used to generate the final forecasting model. As propane consumption was low for the months from June to September, the best results were obtained when the data for the months from October through May was used for analysis. The results indicate that the forecasting model provides a potentially useful forecast.

▼ Over the past decade, the world has seen a precipitous decline in elephant populations largely due to poaching spurred by resurgent
demand, growing incomes in Asia, and enforcement shortfalls in elephant range states.
Demand for ivory, though the
subject of many studies and the target of numerous public awareness campaigns across Asia, remains poorly understood. Public education campaigns have had substantial success educating the public of the negative impacts of ivory consumption, but little is yet understood about which messaging works best to modify consumption behavior. The end goal of all these efforts is reducing ivory consumption, but how are policymakers to know which campaigns are truly effective and which may be counter productive? This study attempts to shed some light on this issue.
At the root of
demand for ivory are a number of structural and normative problems. At the structural level, outdated laws and inconsistent policy implementation at the multiple levels of Chinese government make environmental campaigns difficult to implement. Issues of corruption, interference from private interests, and state-led promotion of cultural heritage industries compound these problems. At the normative level, attitudes towards wildlife conservation and conscientious consumption are new in China. The determinants of
demand, often rooted in deeply held personal beliefs, vary across demographic groups and between individuals. Campaigns must be designed with the Chinese consumers and their unique cultural values in mind and be targeted to individual subgroups in order to maximize efficacy. Shifting norms is a slow process and must also be bolstered by consistent government enforcement.
This report proceeds in three sections. The first introduces the global trade in ivory, what is known about
demand for ivory in China and consumer groups, and what still remains to be discovered, which is the inspiration for this report. The second section discusses the structural obstacles to
demand reduction, with a specific eye to the Chinese political and social context. It covers relevant domestic legislation, the role of civil society in forwarding conservation goals, and the efforts and successes thus far in the fight against ivory trafficking. Part three presents the results of an online experimental survey that tested how potential ivory consumers react to different conservation messaging and how that messaging modifies subsequent answers to questions about ivory consumption and incentivizes political action on conservation issues. The results of the survey show that receiving conservation-related messaging is effective in manipulating subjects responses to questions regarding attitudes towards ivory, both at the policy level and at the level of individual consumption behavior.

▼ The paper attempts to estimate household energy
demand (fuel choice) using panel data for different sources of energy consumption. The study contributes to the contemporary literature a coherent view of energy
demand (fuel choice) in rural setup. The result of the finding suggests that as household’s total expenditure rises, fuel option widens and fuel mix may change. They respond by increasing the number of the fuel they use exhibiting fuel stacking (multiple fuel use) behavior but traditional/inferior fuels are rarely entirely excluded from household energy mix. It also suggests that households do not simply substitute one fuel for another due only to income or expenditure increases, rather diversify their fuel consumption in a process of fuel stacking. To envisage this issue deeply the study used econometric tool of the linear approximation almost ideal
demand system (LAAIDS) with normalized prices to compute expenditure elasticities and the multinomial logit model of household fuel choice behavior. The fuel stacking (energy mix) model is based on the fact that in any point in time, rural households use multiple sources of energy. Households make inter fuel switch and inter fuel substitution in optimizing their energy mix by adopting multiple fuel use (fuel stacking) strategy in response to income or expenditure change; rather than completely transiting to consumption of new fuels as the energy ladder hypothesis suggests. To prove this, we computed the expenditure or income elasticities of
demand for inferior fuels and advanced fuels. The result of the study, that
demand is expenditure elastic for advanced fuels and expenditure inelastic for inferior fuels provides solid and consistent argument/evidence to the economic literature that despite the income constraints, households prefer the normal good (advanced fuels) to the inferior goods (traditional fuels).
Furthermore, the study used multinomial logit estimate of the determinants of household choice between inferior fuels, advanced fuels and mix of the two fuels to scrutinize the fuel stacking(multiple fuel use) behavior of households in the energy mix model. Our result indicates that household’s total expenditure, the fact that the household is female headed, total land owned by household (holding size), total number of livestock owned by household and family size square as predictor have positive coefficients of parameter estimate. This implies that the likelihood of household’s choosing traditional/inferior fuels or mix of inferior and advanced fuels (except total number of livestock owned) away from advanced fuels increases with increment in these predictors. However, family size, education of household head, age of household head, time spent on fuel collection and expenditure on advanced fuels have negative parameter estimates. This indicates that it is less likely that households choose inferior fuel or mix of inferior and advanced fuels compared to advanced fuel with increase in these variables as predictors. Our result indicates that fuel stacking or…

▼ The theory of consumer demand is the oldest and one of the most fruitful research areas in economics. Theoretically, it is concerned with the foundation of microeconomics, that is, allocation problems. Empirically, demand analysis provides policy-makers with important references for their decisions on welfare issues such as poverty and inequality measurement. The tax reform in Europe and the US is the drive for the new round of great interest in this area because demand analysis can roughly depict welfare consequences by its indices.
The understanding of consumer demand analysis contributes to knowledge of the methodology of economic studies. In the preceding study, the present author reviews the theory of consumer demand and discusses the properties of demand functions. The literature review in that study also discusses some relevant topics in this area such as the choice of functional forms, the aggregation problem, and the comparison of different systems. It provides some examples of demand specifications and describes their merits and weakness. However, it is a great step to make from theoretical models to empirical application of the models; how to deal with the data, how to make the models econometrically workable, especially how to interpret results are the most important issues in empirical work.
This paper estimates three demand system specifications, namely, the AIDS, the Rotterdam, and the LES using British household expenditure data for the years 1974-1993. The purpose of this study is to provide an empirical comparison of these models. The focus is on demonstrating the differences in the results they yield.
Section 2 describes the data used in this empirical work. Section 3 presents a brief overview of the empirical models and the estimation method. Section 4 reports the empirical results in reasonable detail, especially through a complete interpretation of the calculated elasticities. A sequential test of the homogeneity and symmetry restrictions for the AIDS and Rotterdam models are also presented in this section. Section 5 concludes this paper.

▼ The addition of solar panels to forecasting energy
demand and peak energy
demand presents an entirely new challenge to a facility. By having to account for the varying energy generation from the solar panels on any given day based on the weather it becomes increasingly difficult to accurately predict energy
demand. With renewable energy sources becoming more prevalent, new methods to track peak energy
demand are needed to account for the energy provided by renewable sources. We know from previous research that Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models are both capable of accurately forecasting building
demand and peak electric load days without the presence of solar panels. The goal of this research was to take three different approaches for both the ANN model and the ARIMA model to find the most accurate method for forecasting monthly energy
demand and peak load days while considering the varying daily solar energy production. The first approach used was to forecast net
demand outright based on relevant historical training data including weather information that would help the models learn how this information affected the overall net
demand. The second approach was to forecast the building
demand specifically based on the same relevant historical data and then use a random decision tree forest to predict the cluster of day that each day of the month would be in terms of solar production (high, medium with early peak, medium with late peak, low). After the type of day was predicted we would subtract the average solar energy production of the predicted cluster to receive our forecasted net
demand for that day. The third approach was similar to the second, but instead of subtracting the average of the cluster we subtracted multiple randomly generated days from that cluster to provide multiple overlapping forecasts. This was specifically used to try and better predict peak load days by testing the hypothesis that if 80% or higher predicted a peak day it would in fact be a peak day. The ANN model outperformed the ARIMA for each approach. Forecasting multiple days was the best of the three approaches. The multiple day ANN forecast had the highest balanced accuracy and sensitivity, the net
demand ANN approach was the 2nd most accurate approach and the average solar ANN forecast was the 3rd best approach in terms of balanced accuracy and sensitivity. Based on the outcomes of this study, consumers and institutions such as RIT will be better able to predict peak usage days and use preventative measures to save money by reducing their energy intake on those predicted days. Another benefit will be that energy distribution companies will be able to accurately predict the amount of energy customers with personal solar panels will need in addition to the solar energy they are using. This will allow a greater level of reliability from the providers. Being able to accurately forecast energy
demand with the presence of solar energy is going to be critical with the…

Demand Opportunities. (Under the direction of Dr. Nancy Cassill and Dr. William Oxenham).
The United States textile and apparel industry is currently facing considerable challenges due to increasing trade liberalization, which has led to a dramatic increase in lower priced imports. For firms in this sector to remain competitive, they need to find ways to differentiate themselves. One way of doing this is through niche marketing. However, many companies do not know where or how to start identifying potential markets that would match their core competencies. This becomes even more complicated when the potential market is based on latent
demand, meaning the consumers have not voiced a need for a particular product.
The purpose of this research is to examine the research methodologies successful niche marketing companies use to identify potential niche markets and latent
demand. This was completed through both quantitative surveys and interviews with firms that have a successful niche marketing strategy. The results of this research were used to develop a procedural model that the US textile and apparel firms can incorporate into their overall research and development process in order to identify niche markets and/or products directly related to their core competencies. The results provided ITT member companies with a framework that they can use to identify and evaluate new market opportunities, and therefore, be better positioned to compete in the increasingly competitive global marketplace.

▼ The airline industry is a highly competitive market. Particularly after the major liberalization in the industry, the competition carried a step forward for all the concerned companies. Airline industry is a very dynamic market also; the expenses of a single operation may change substantially in a very short time period, which could be due to the fickle regulations or the fluctuation of oil prices. At any time, for a certain destination, a new airline company can start its operations and become a competitor, which can result in a market share loss for current operators. In such an environment, airline companies strive to maximize their revenues in every single flight. Load factors of a flight, classification, and pricing of airline tickets in a flight are determinative on the revenue of a single operation. In order to maximize revenue for its operations, companies should have a broad range of information about airline market conditions and passenger profile and preferences for every destination that they operate. Turkish Airlines, which is the largest airline company of Republic of Turkey and increasing its global awareness day by day, also strives to maximize its revenues per flight. In order to do so, Turkish Airlines needs to have suitable decisions regarding the capacity issues (determination of type and number of aircrafts, and flight frequencies) which will be then used worldwide in the different branches of company. These reasons lead to the increased need for the company to adopt practical total demand analysis in its operating destinations. The company aims to specify the factors, which are effective on the change of total demand for every destination. Turkish Airlines also strives to make most accurate demand forecasting in order to manage the peaks and troughs of the company’s flights. This project was brought to agenda in order to help this company to address this issue and was initiated with the purpose of making a total demand analysis for specified destinations. Destinations are from Stockholm to Athens, Thessalonica, New Delhi, Mumbai, Istanbul, Bangkok, and Dubai. This study is a quantitative study. Chosen demand factors, which constitute the total airline traffic between destination cities, are analyzed with respect to change in total demand. Various demand-forecasting methods are also applied in order to determine the best forecasting method for each destination, which is compatible with the quantitative approach. Results of the study are directly related to the airline market conditions of aforementioned destinations. Results are presented in four subheadings for every destination; overview of airline market, competition level of airline market, factors regarding the destination and demand forecasting for the destination. This study provides important information to Turkish Airlines regarding total demand analysis of specified destinations. Company learns the common factors (price, total amount of luggage, etc.) and the destination specific factors (language of crew,…

▼ Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
Electric demand charge is a large portion (usually 40%) of electric bill in residential, commercial, and manufacturing sectors. This charge is based on the greatest of all demands that have occurred during a month recorded by utility provider for an end-user. During the past several years, electric demand forecasting have been broadly studied by utilities on account of the fact that it has a crucial impact on planning resources to provide consumers reliable power at all time; on the other hand, not many studies have been conducted on consumer side. In this thesis, a novel Maximum Daily Demand (MDD) forecasting method, called Adaptive-Rate-of-Change (ARC), is proposed by analysing real-time demand trend data and incorporating moving average calculations as well as rate of change formularization to develop a forecasting tool which can be applied on either utility or consumer sides. ARC algorithm is implemented on two different real case studies to develop very short-term load forecasting (VSTLF), short-term load forecasting (STLF), and medium-term load forecasting (MTLF). The Chi-square test is used to validate the forecasting results. The results of the test reveal that the ARC algorithm is 84% successful in forecasting maximum daily demands in a period of 72 days with the P-value equals to 0.0301. Demand charge is also estimated to be saved by $8,056 (345.6 kW) for the first year for case study I (a die casting company) by using ARC algorithm. Following that, a new Maximum Demand Management (MDM) method is proposed to provide electric consumers a complete package. The proposed MDM method broadens the electric consumer understanding of how MDD is sensitive to the temperature, production, occupancy, and different sub-systems. The MDM method are applied on two different real case studies to calculate sensitivities by using linear regression models. In all linear regression models, R-squareds calculated as 0.9037, 0.8987, and 0.8197 which indicate very good fits between fitted values and observed values. The results of proposed demand forecasting and management methods can be very helpful and beneficial in decision making for demand management and demand response program.

▼ The objective of this work is to design and implement an architectural framework for a web-based
demand management system that allows an electric utility to reduce system peak load by automatically managing end-use appliances based on homeownersṕreferences. The proposed framework comprises the following components: human user interface, home energy management (HEM) algorithms, web services for
demand response communications, selected ZigBee and smart energy profile features for appliance interface, and security aspects for a web-based HEM system. The proposed web-based HEM system allows homeowners to be more aware about their electricity consumption by allowing visualization of their real-time and historical electricity consumption data. The HEM system enables customers to monitor and control their household appliances from anywhere with an Internet connection. It offers a user-friendly and attractive display panel for a homeowner to easily set his/her preferences and comfort settings. An algorithm to autonomously control appliance operation is incorporated in the proposed web-based HEM system, which makes it possible for residential customers to participate in
demand response programs. In this work, the algorithm is demonstrated to manage power-intensive appliances in a single home, keeping the total household load within a certain limit while satisfying preset comfort settings and user preferences. Furthermore, an extended version of the algorithm is demonstrated to manage power-intensive appliances for multiple homes within a neighborhood. As one of the
demand response (DR)-enabling technologies, the web services-based DR communication has been developed to enable households without smart meters or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to participate in a DR event via the HEM system. This implies that an electric utility can send a DR signal via a web services-enabled HEM system, and appropriate appliances can be controlled within each home based on homeowner preferences. The interoperability with other systems, such as utility systems, third-party Home Area Network (HAN) systems, etc., is also taken into account in the design of the proposed web services-based HEM system. That is, it is designed to allow interaction with authorized third-party systems by means of web services, which are collectively an interface for machine-to-machine interaction. This work also designs and implements device organization and interface for end-use appliances utilizing ZigBee Device Profile and Smart Energy Profile. Development of the Home Area Network (HAN) of appliances and the HAN Coordinator has been performed using a ZigBee network. Analyses of security risks for a web-based HEM system and their mitigation strategies have been discussed as well.

▼ The socio-economic and demographic conditions of
Bangladesh have changed dramatically during the last three decades
after economic and political reforms in 1991, which lead to change
in food preferences both in rural and urban areas. Following the
global trend of increasing commodity prices, the price hike in
Bangladesh has raised policy concerns regarding the potential
shifts in consumption patterns and welfare loss. Furthermore, the
agricultural industry and the food supply in Bangladesh is highly
susceptible to the effects of climate change and increased
frequency of extreme weather events. The accurate and timely
insights on food
demand patterns in Bangladesh under the changing
socio-economic scenarios can have important implications for food
and nutritional security, price stability, poverty alleviation and
appropriate import-export policy of the country. Policies on these
issues cannot produce desired outcome without accurate estimation
of consumer
demand. However, despite the increasing need for
improved understanding of food
demand in Bangladesh, the literature
in this area is relatively limited.
The purpose of this
dissertation is to provide insight on food
demand and supply in
Bangladesh by utilizing recent advancements in
demand modeling and
the latest and most complete data available on household food
consumption in Bangladesh. The first essay examines welfare
consequences of rising food prices in Bangladesh utilizing the
Exact Affine Stone Index (EASI)
demand model. Bangladeshi
households experienced a sharp increase in food commodity prices
during the last two decades especially in the period of 2007-2008.
Inflation moved to two-digit level in 2007-08 and also in 2010-11
reaching 12.28% and 10.89% respectively, mostly driven by inflation
in food prices. Estimating welfare impact of rising food price
utilizing the prevalent
demand models like the Almost Ideal
Demand
System (AIDS) and its’ family models may lead to biased estimate
due to a number of practical limitations of these models. The EASI
model has number of advantages over AIDS due to its flexibility in
analysis of disaggregated consumer level data. In Essay 1, we
utilize EASI model to estimate price and expenditure elasticities
of 14 major food items using secondary data extracted from
Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) conducted by the
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The estimated elasticities are
then used to evaluate the welfare consequences of rising food
prices in Bangladesh. Welfare analysis based on both actual price
change and simulated price change indicates that the welfare loss
is the highest for lower income household. Further, the results
indicate that the welfare loss of rural households was higher
compared to that of urban households.
The focus of the Essay 2 is
on the analysis of pre-commitments in food
demand in Bangladesh.
Pre-committed
demand is the portion of
demand where the quantity
demanded is not sensitive to changes in price or income. In the
presence of pre-commitments, the
demand is almost perfectly…

▼ The aim of this study is to close the gap between
the theory of market orientation and the practice of implementation
by determining the critical success factors of one company’s
approach, namely De Beers’ ‘Supplier of Choice’, for use by other
corporates in similar contexts. The research was undertaken as a
single, explanatory case study to gain an understanding of the
specifics of De Beers’ approach to market orientation, and was a
longitudinal study over a 10 year period. It was completed in two
stages, with phase one being qualitative, and comprising
documentary research. This was supplemented by a second qualitative
phase of three personal, in-depth, and semistructured interviews.
Several different sources of data were used to triangulate
corroboration of the findings. Implementation occurred in steps
which concentrated on communicating top managements’ vision
throughout the organisation using internal publicity and
operationalising the objectives, improving the interdepartmental
effectiveness of key divisions, and finally by redesigning the
performance management system using market-based rewards. The
theoretical elements of Kohli and Jaworski’s (1990) model are
applicable to defining the practice of implementing this type of
strategy. Two discrepancies exist between theory and practice.
Firstly, that communication of the vision can be on a ‘need to know
basis’, and secondly, across the board market-based reward systems
are not critical to managing performance during
implementation.

▼ Global shipping lanes are the arteries of international trade. They are responsible for transporting 80% of global freight by volume, thereby providing a crucial service to international economic development. In 2012, the maritime freight sector emitted 615 MtCO2, comprising 2.0% of global CO2 emissions (IEA, 2015b). Projections indicate that CO2 emissions will triple between 2010 and 2050 - since
demand growth in freight services is likely to be stronger than (energy) efficiency improvements the coming decades (ITF, 2015). The latter is partly due to the conservative attitude of the sector towards innovation and climate policy (Cames et al., 2015). Consequently, the European Parliament warns that if the ambition of the international shipping sector continues to fall behind efforts in other sectors, and if action to combat climate change is further postponed, their shares in global CO2 emissions may rise substantially to 17 % by 2050 (Cames et al., 2015). This study seeks to explain the evolution of final energy
demand and CO2 emissions from the global maritime freight sector up to 2050. This is explored from a bottom-up perspective, following a BAU pathway and a 2DS pathway. The study also provides insight into the CO2 abatement options available to the shipping sector to move from BAU to 2DS emissions trajectories. Results indicate that according to BAU projections, CO2 emissions from international maritime freight will grow with a factor 2.73 between 2010 and 2050, to a total of 1937 MtCO2 per annum in 2050. However, the 2DS scenario requires a carbon budget for the maritime freight sector of 710 MtCO2 in 2050. This is technologically achievable through the following CO2 abatement options: 1) avoided
demand of trade of oil, gas and coal 2) larger ships 3) improved operational and technical efficiency for new ships and retrofits 4) switching to LNG at 25% of the fuel mix and 5) switching to biofuel at 25% of the fuel mix. It is important to note that full implementation of these CO2 abatement options is immensely ambitious. As such, this study emphasizes the urgency of timely implementation of globally binding policy targeting GHG emissions from ships. IMO, policy makers and the academic community should bring all hands on deck to achieve this – to reduce CO2 emissions, and to design a roadmap to moving from a BAU to a 2DS future where global temperature increase is limited to 2°C only.

▼ As drop-on-
demand (DOD) applications continue to gain ground in desktop inkjet-printing, 3D printing, fluid mixing, and other areas the
demand for higher frequency operations are beginning to push against the current physical boundaries in DOD technology. The current research is exploring the possibility of controlling drop volume and velocity at high frequency ranges where meniscus vibrations can occur between drop formations and affect drop formation characteristics.
A periodic voltage is applied to a piezoelectric disk in order to generate pressure fluctuations in a single nozzle droplet generator, causing the fluid meniscus at the nozzle to vibrate. A single stronger pulse is then superimposed over the periodic waveform at different phases in order to drive drop ejection. The characteristics of the resulting drop, specifically the volume and velocity, are experimentally measured
using a high speed camera with precise timing control. The results of these experiments are then compared to a lumped element model (LEM) developed for the droplet generator geometry used. Within the LEM model framework, special attention was given to the definition of a novel method by which one can measure drop volume within an electroacoustic circuit and also allow meniscus dynamics to affect present and future drop formations.
Experimental results indicate a strong dependence of both drop volume and drop velocity on the phase of the vibrating meniscus at the start of drop formation. Positive meniscus displacements and momentums resulted in large drop volumes and velocities while negative displacements could reduce drop volume or altogether eliminate drop formation. Specifically, positive displacements and momentum of a vibrating meniscus could lead to drop volumes approximately 50% larger than the original drop volume without a vibrating meniscus. Meanwhile, negative meniscus displacements and momentums were shown to have the ability to completely prevent drop formation. Additional potential for drop characteristic control with a vibrating meniscus is discussed alongside observations on the stabilizing affect the vibrating meniscus appears to have on drop velocity as a function of time. Also, flow visualization of the drop formation is provided to demonstrate the added affect the meniscus vibrations have on the drop shapes and break-off profiles.
The LEM model presented demonstrates qualitative agreement with the experimental model, but fails to quantitatively predict drop volumes. Sources of error for the LEM model and potential improvements are discussed.

▼ Composite materials are widely used in various
sectors such as aerospace, automotive and wind energy. Global
increase of
demand, particularly for fibre reinforced plastic (FRP)
composites, unavoidably lead to high volumes of manufacturing and
end of life waste. Currently, the most common disposal route for
composite waste is through landfill. However, current and impending
legislations such as Directive on Landfill of Waste (1999/31/EC)
and End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive (2000/53/EC), have limited
the amount of composite waste permitted for landfilling. In
addition, production of virgin composite materials requires higher
energy input in comparison to other counterpart materials such as
steel and aluminium. This calls for an urgent need for composite
waste to be recycled and reused in close loop and cross sector
applications. The composite materials have a heterogeneous nature.
Thermoset matrixes, which are used in most high grade applications,
have three dimensional cross-linked structures which make melting
and remoulding impossible. Such complex nature requires appropriate
composite recycling technologies, a number of which are currently
under research and development. At this early stage it is important
to select and develop sustainable solutions in terms of economic
performance and reduced environmental impact. Unfortunately at
present, there is limited high integrity environmental related data
in literature to help assess the life cycle benefits of composite
recycling. This information is vital in exploring environmental
credentials of composite recycling processes, and to ensure
resource efficient use of manufacturing and end of life composite
waste. The work reported in this PhD thesis deals with the
investigation of energy
demand of composite recycling processes.
Composite waste and
demand in the UK market was captured through
Sankey diagrams. The diagrams, combined with environmental
footprints of virgin material and recycling processes, were used to
identify resource benefits of composite recycling initiatives.
Furthermore, environmental data for mechanical recycling of glass
fibre composites was derived through new and novel bottom up
process science inspired mathematical energy modelling approaches.
It was found that the process specific energy
demand is dependent
on the processing rate. The effects of key process variables in
mechanical recycling on process energy
demand and recyclate quality
were also investigated. This study highlights the importance of
selecting the right conditions for running recycling processes and
generating recyclate with a high market value. Potential of new
recycling techniques, namely high voltage fragmentation, was also
assessed. Performance of the method, which was originally developed
for fracturing rocks, was compared to the mature mechanical
recycling process. The final part of this study used a life cycle
assessment method to evaluate end of life options for an automotive
composite product with the highlights on positive environmental
impacts of recycling…

▼ Risk management is an important aspect of helping households avoid and escape chronic poverty throughout the world. In many settings, women and their dependents are disproportionately negatively affected by poverty and shocks, suggesting particular applicability of improved risk management. Indexbased insurance products are an innovative approach to risk management that circumvents difficulties associated with transactions costs and information asymmetries that plague standard insurance products in developing countries. General
demand for index-based insurance products remains limited despite its theoretical strengths, and very little is known about women's
demand. This paper examines the relationship between gender and
demand for index-based livestock insurance (IBLI) among Boran pastoralists in southern Ethiopia. It uses three years of household survey data and a series of qualitative interviews to investigate which
demand factors for IBLI vary by gender. Results suggest that, though IBLI appears to be equitably accessed by men and women alike, the factors determining access may indeed vary by gender. Risk aversion and informal insurance influence IBLI
demand differently for men and women. At the same time, baseline differences in financial literacy and herd size have a negative impact on women's
demand, but lower education and smaller shares of income from livestock have a positive effect on IBLI
demand by women.

▼ In this dissertation, I argue that the political environment can meaningfully influence media
demand. Studying the determinants of news consumption is critical because these processes affect the knowledge on which democratic citizens base their political thinking, decision-making, and even their efforts to hold elected officials accountable. I primarily focus on the effects of political advantage and disadvantage in electoral contexts; that is, I examine how the prospect of a win or a loss, as well as an outright victory or defeat, affects news
demand. In doing so, I draw on aggregate-level data containing local partisan newspapers’ circulations over nearly a century and individual-level data consisting of two original experimental studies and observational surveys from the 2016 U.S. presidential election. I largely find evidence that electoral advantage depresses information seeking relative to electoral disadvantage, which can be a powerful stimulant for news
demand. I also find distinct effects for disadvantage associated more with the emotion of anger versus anxiety, and in the context of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, I find that extreme levels of disadvantage may promote hopelessness and disengagement with politics.

▼ This dissertation is a collection of three economic studies on the
demand for and optimal pricing of state lottery games. Lottery betting is a multi-billion dollar industry that provides an important source of government revenue. Since lotteries operate at such a large scale, suboptimal pricing could lead to substantial losses in potential profit. This
body of work provides a significant contribution to the literature on lottery
demand by
introducing a number of innovative modeling techniques that resolve major shortcomings found in current methods and provide direct policy implications for improving the profitability of state lottery games.
The first essay discusses and resolves three important issues widely overlooked in the literature on lottery
demand: the treatment of observations with super-unitary expected values, controlling for the endogeneity of price, and the usefulness of estimating price elasticities evaluated at the sample mean. The second essay extends the effective price model of lottery
demand into a setting where a single controller operates
a portfolio of games simultaneously. Expenditure, own-, and cross-price elasticities for several on-line lottery games are estimated with a Barten synthetic
demand system.
These elasticities are used to obtain measures of price sensitivity, to determine the
degree to which these games are either complements or substitutes, and to evaluate
whether profits are maximized over the entire portfolio. Finally, the third essay
describes a new method to analyze the profitability of different pricing schemes that
explicitly accounts for the intertemporal nature of lottery games with rolling jackpots. Since period-by-period variation in sales induced by rolling jackpots causes changes in the probability that a jackpot is won, which in-turn influences the probability of reaching
new drawings with higher jackpot amounts, static analysis of lottery profitability could
lead to biased estimates of expected profit. By utilizing a Monte Carlo integration
procedure, a measure of expected profit is obtained through the simulation of lottery play over a period of four years. Hypothetical policy changes are examined to estimate
potential increases in profitability. Empirical results for the game, Lotto Texas, indicate
that a 0.40 increase in price would lead to an estimated increase in profit ranging from
142 million to 191 million over four years.

▼ The thesis includes three chapters. The first chapter studies a type of partially identified models defined by moment equalities with latent variables and proposes a novel method to identify and estimate the parameters of interest. The second chapter applies the method in chapter one to
demand estimation when the observed market shares cannot correctly represent the true market shares. The third chapter studies price competition models when firms are facing capacity constraints, and provides methods to partially or point identify and estimate the parameters of interests in both
demand and supply function.

▼ The aim of this study is to close the gap between the
theory of market orientation and the practice of implementation by
determining the critical success factors of one company’s approach,
namely De Beers’ ‘Supplier of Choice’, for use by other corporates
in similar contexts. The research was undertaken as a single,
explanatory case study to gain an understanding of the specifics of
De Beers’ approach to market orientation, and was a longitudinal
study over a 10 year period. It was completed in two stages, with
phase one being qualitative, and comprising documentary research.
This was supplemented by a second qualitative phase of three
personal, in-depth, and semistructured interviews. Several
different sources of data were used to triangulate corroboration of
the findings. Implementation occurred in steps which concentrated
on communicating top managements’ vision throughout the
organisation using internal publicity and operationalising the
objectives, improving the interdepartmental effectiveness of key
divisions, and finally by redesigning the performance management
system using market-based rewards. The theoretical elements of
Kohli and Jaworski’s (1990) model are applicable to defining the
practice of implementing this type of strategy. Two discrepancies
exist between theory and practice. Firstly, that communication of
the vision can be on a ‘need to know basis’, and secondly, across
the board market-based reward systems are not critical to managing
performance during implementation.

▼ In this paper, the determinant of Ethiopia aggregate
demand is studies using yearly data in the period 1971/2 to 2006/7. The main objective of the paper is to identify the main determinant of Ethiopia import and the relative elasticity of explanatory variables. The augmented dickey fuller and Phillips Peron test is used to test the unit root test. Johansen co integration and error correction model is employed on yearly data in order to approve the existence of long run relationship and to identify the long run and short run relationship. The main finding is that, in the long run Ethiopia import is mainly affected by real effective exchange rate, real gross domestic product and relative price. It shows elastic import
demand with respect to explanatory variables except relative price. The sign of real effective exchange rate is unexpected in the long run. The short run adjustment coefficient is identified and has a correct negative sign; however, most of the coefficients of short run variables are statistically insignificant. The implication of the finding is that, ineffectiveness exchange rate policy in the long run, effectiveness of pricing policy and difficulty of substituting imported goods by domestic product.

▼ The competitive business environment has gone through many evolutions. Great
consumer demand for customization has led to a short product life cycles thus
creating the need for flexibility strategy. The nature of these changes has necessitated
firms to have capabilities beyond flexibility described as agility.Agility capabilities
are considered as main features of today’s forward-looking organizations. Those
organizations which possess such characteristics would be able to achieve competitive
advantage and gain an edge over competitors. Over the last decade, Kenya Ports
Authority faced numerous operational challenges such as port congestion, old and
unreliable cargo handling equipment, slow and manual processing of documentations,
poor infrastructure, constrained berths and yards and high rate of cargo pilferage. The
challenges contributed to low productivity thus there was urgent need for Kenya Ports
Authority to enhance efficiency and operational productivity. The study sought to
demistify the effect of agility practices on Port productivity. A longitudinal research
design was used for the research. Secondary data was used and detailed information
on dependent and independent variables were obtained from Kenya Ports Authority.
Productivity measures namely ship turnaround time, ship waiting time, berth
occupancy, total cargo throughput, cargo dwell time and total number of twenty feet
equivalent units handled and agility measures namely reliability, quality and speed
were tested for the period under study and analysed using the SPSS software. The
study revealed that there was a significant positive relationship between the
productivity indicators (that is, ship turn-around time, cargo dwell time, total cargo
throughput and the number of twenty feet equivalent units handled except waiting
time and berth occupancy). The study further concluded that relationship between
agility practices and port productivity existed at high significance level. It
recommends that Kenya Ports Authority should adopt full implementation of agile
practices to experience improved productivity. By adopting agility practices, KPA can
provide transport solutions by developing the capability to effectively control
transport chain through extra-flexibility and capacity utilization. The study finally
recommends that more research be done not only at KPA but also in other service
firm to clearly establish the relationship of the study variables and the benefits.

▼ Regimes of economic growth with abnormally high or abnormally low degrees of capacity utilisation constitute the main analytical subject of this thesis. The theoretical explanation provided for this subject centres upon the interplay between demand and investment. Three strands of theoretical investigation are called into question in connection with this subject; a) Keynes and Harrod; b) the Steindl-Kalecki inspired literature on the capacity utilisation model; c) the Sen inspired approach to economic growth based on a multiplicity of growth regimes. Both Keynes and Harrod studied aspects of the interplay between demand and investment. The Steindl-Kalecki models of growth allow for different from normal degrees of capacity utilisation. Finally the Sen inspired literature is relevant because a regime of growth with abnormal capacity utilisation cannot be credited with long-term status, but more naturally belongs to an approach to growth which admits of a number of growth regimes. The theoretical innovation which this thesis suggests is the introduction of the concept of the medium term in the theory of economic growth as an independent construct. It is precisely by doing so that the interplay between demand and investment can be given a new role and that specific questions which remain open in those areas of investigation can be solved. All this is achieved by connecting non-normal degrees of utilisation with that part of investment demand which is designed to alter the average scale of capacity, while the capability of the system to grow over time is taken for granted. When such a separation is obtained it becomes clear that the capacity adjustment process gives rise to a process of growth worth studying for its own sake. The equilibrium rate of growth which can then be identified is a medium-term equilibrium with realised expectations.
