Structure Optimization has been an important subject with many applications for centuries. In the last sixty years, numerical optimization has facilitated large advancements in this field. One of the areas in Structure Optimization is Topology Optimization, which is used for Additive Manufacturing purposes. In this thesis we explore Static and Dynamic Topology Optimization. In the optimization problems matrix equations of the type Ax = b, with A sparse and badly conditioned, are accelerated using deflation techniques in addition to preconditioning. We have applied several iterative methods, preconditioners, and deflation types to the topology optimization problems. The static problem concerns compliance optimization of a two-dimensional MBB-beam. The deflation type that reduced the number of iterations the most without introducing large overhead costs was rigid body modes deflation, divided over element squares. It was found that dividing the rigid body modes vectors over density based regions did not reduce the number of iterations. The dynamic problem concerns eigenvalue optimization of a three-dimensional moving wafer stage that is used for laser-printing computer chips. The optimization formulation contains a shifted eigenvalue problem that is solved using model order reduction. In the computations of bases for the reduction matrix equations appear, to which deflation techniques were applied. All deflation types reduced the number of iterations and needed time to solve the matrix equations. The best deflation type was using rigid body modes (RBM) divided over element cubes combined with eigenvectors from the previous iteration. The next best was the same combination without the division over cubes. Using eigenvectors or RBM separately were the least effective deflation types. There is an optimal amount of element cubes to use when dividing the RBM. The tests on a few grid sizes suggested a quadrupling of the amount when the grid size doubles, but more research is needed to really identify a relation between the grid size and optimal amount. When increasing the grid size to a level where parallel computing on a cluster was required, the deflation type using element cubes could not be used due to complications with parallel implementation. Using the deflation type RBM and eigenvectors, reductions by a factor of 1.60 and 1.75 in the total needed time for 150 optimization iterations were achieved for grid sizes 120x120x20 and 180x180x30, respectively. In the first case the objective function of the optimized design converged further in the same amount of iterations when using deflation. future research could include using the promising deflation type RBM in cubes + eigenvectors in parallel computing to obtain an even larger time reduction in the optimization of the wafer stage with large grid sizes.

▼ In this work we study the implementations of deflation and preconditioning techniques for solving ill-conditioned linear systems using iterative methods. Solving such systems can be a time-consuming process because of the jumps in the coefficients due to large difference in material properties. We have developed implementations of the iterative methods with these preconditioning techniques on the GPU and multi-core CPUs in order to significantly reduce the computing time. The problems we have chosen have a symmetric and positive definite coefficient matrix. We have further extended these implementations for scalability on clusters of GPUs and multi-core CPUs. We outline the challenges involved in making a robust preconditioned solver that is suitable for scaling in a parallel environment. To start with, we experimented with simple techniques to establish the feasibility of implementing specialized preconditioning schemes (deflation) for specific problems (bubbly flow). We provide an analysis for the choices we make for implementing certain parts (e.g. solution of inner system in deflation) of these operations and tune the data structures keeping in mind the hardware capabilities. We improve our solvers by refining the choices we make for the application of these techniques (Neumann Preconditioning and better deflation vectors). For different options available we compare the effect when varying problem parameters (e.g. number of bubbles and deflation vectors). After testing our methods on standalone machines with multi-core CPUs and a single GPU we make a parallel implementation using MPI. We explore different data divisions in order to establish the effect of communication and choose the more scalable approach. In order to make our results more comprehensive we also test the implementations on two different clusters. We show the results for two versions of our code: one for multi-core CPUs and another one for multiple GPUs per node. Our methods show strong scaling behavior. To further evaluate the use of deflation combined with a simple preconditioning technique we test our implementation of the iterative method for solving linear systems from porous media flow problems. We use a library with many different kinds of preconditioners on parallel platforms. We test implementations with and without deflation. Our results show good performance of the iterative methods we use in combination with deflation and preconditioning for a number of problems. Through our experiments we bring about the effectiveness of deflation for implementation on parallel platforms and extend its applicability to problems from different domains. Création ou destruction de monnaie sont des facteurs majeurs de variation de sa valeur. Il est essentiel de cerner d’où provient originellement cette valeur, puis de comprendre comment de tels mécanismes de création ou de destruction l’affecteront, et enfin de mesurer les conséquences de ces mécanismes en termes de création ou destruction cette fois de richesse, au sens où Adam Smith traitait de la Richesse des nations. Plusieurs écoles de pensée ont formulé des propositions divergentes en matière d’émission de monnaie, pour sa bonne régulation et dans une recherche de relation efficace avec les besoins économiques. La montée en puissance des monnaies fiduciaires et scripturales a exacerbé ces divergences depuis deux siècles. La démonétisation progressive de l’argent métal puis de l’or ont parallèlement octroyé aux politiques monétaires une liberté d’action mais également une responsabilité croissantes. Une analyse critique de ces politiques et doctrines monétaires, ouvrira dans un second temps sur des propositions de nouveaux mécanismes d’injection de monnaie. Avec pour objectif premier de maintenir une stabilité entre inflation et déflation. Un deuxième objectif étant un meilleur lissage de la croissance économique, atténuateur notamment des cycles Juglar. Un troisième, de cercle vertueux, où les émissions de monnaie parviennent à établir des conditions économiques favorables à leur propre reproduction future. Ces mécanismes de création de monnaie, articulés avec la croissance et la productivité, trouvant pour complément une destruction des « faux-droits » dans l’acception que leur donnait Jacques Rueff, ou du « faux-monnayage » selon la définition de Maurice Allais.

Creation and destruction of money are key factors to determine its value. Therefore, gaining a clear understanding of the origin of this value is of crucial importance. Then, understanding how this value will be altered by these creation or destruction mechanisms. And finally, measuring the consequences of these mechanisms for creation or destruction of wealth, as Adam Smith understands that term to be : An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Several schools of thought exist, as to what factor has to be taken into account in order to ensure economic effectiveness and to achieve proper regulation of these monetary phenomenons. The growing importance of fiat and scriptural money, and the demonetization of silver and of gold, have increased the monetary authorities’ room for manoeuvre, but also the weight of their responsibility. The analysis of these monetary policies will lead to proposals for improvements and for new mechanisms of money creation. With a first objective of price stability. With a second one of facilitating the smoothing of economic business cycles (Juglar cycles). With a third one of implementing a virtuous cycle, where money creation provides an environment favourable to future new money creation. ▼ Os campos de dunas ativos e os eolianitos do litoral nordeste brasileiro compreendido entre Luís Correia (PI) e Paracuru (CE) estão localizados na área de influência da Zona de Convergência Intertropical, de onde vêm os ventos alísios efetivos na sua formação. A variação da direção exata com que estes ventos atingem a costa constitui o principal critério para dividir a área de estudo em três setores: norte, centro e sul. Em cada setor, a direção do vento efetivo, conjugada com a orientação da linha de costa, determina o grau de desenvolvimento da planície deflacionária,o qual aumenta com o ângulo entre vento e costa. No setor norte (Luís Correia a Camocim, CE), o rumo de vento efetivo é ENE-WSW e o ângulo entre vento e costa varia de 60°, no Piauí, a 20°, no Ceará, com extensões das planícies deflacionárias de 7,5 km e 2,5 km, respectivamente; o setor centro (Itarema e Almofala) apresenta rumo do vento E-W e caracteriza-se pela ausência de campos de dunas; o setor sul possui sentido do vento ESE-WNW e ângulo com a linha de costa de 35°, com zona deflacionária de até 3 km de comprimento. Os eolianitos apresentam-se como cordões descontínuos com 1 a 15m de altura, paralelos à direção do vento efetivo, que ocorrem em meio a planície deflacionária e exibem morfologia análoga à dos rastros lineares residuais ativos típicos desta planície. As datações realizadas em grãos de quartzo, pelo método da luminescência (LOE), e embioclastos ou no cimento calcítico, por 14 C AMS, indicam idades de 650 a 5700 anos, mas com cerca de 80% delas concentradas no intervalo entre 800 e 3200 anos. Os eolianitos mais próximos à linha de costa são mais antigos que os mais distantes, padrão esperadoem rastros lineares residuais, os quais são sucessivamente deixados para trás e estabilizados à medida que o campo de dunas migra. Na análise de fácies deposicionais dos eolianitos, reconheceram-se quartzo calciarenitos com estratificações cruzadas de alto e baixo ângulo e com ou sem rizoconcreções; a elevada concentração de grossos e o padrão dedistribuição de azimutes de mergulho de estratificações cruzadas, o qual é predominantemente bimodal divergente, tendo a direção do vento efetivo e do alongamento das cristas deeolianitos como bissetriz entre as duas modas, reforça a hipótese de associação com rastros lineares residuais. A concentração de eolianitos nesta área do Nordeste brasileiro está ligada à constituição da plataforma continental interna adjacente, a qual é rica em algas vermelhas ramificantes; no entanto, o teor de carbonatos nos eolianitos (10 -25%) é baixo, comparado com o registrado na plataforma submersa abaixo da isóbata de 10m (50% ou mais), e similar ao do sistema praia-duna atual e da plataforma interna rasa, o que leva a interpretar área fonte imediata na praia. A análise petrográfica permitiu reconhecer quatro petrofácies, todas dominadas por quartzo (Q) no arcabouço. ▼ Nonlinear response, bifurcations and stability of rotor-fluid film bearing systems are studied using various numerical investigation schemes such as autonomous/non-autonomous shooting, arc-length continuation, direct numerical integrations, Poincaré sections, Lyapunov exponents, etc. Two types of hydrodynamic bearings, a floating ring bearing (FRB) and a tilting pad journal bearing (TPJB), are employed in this study. The nonlinear characteristic of each bearing is analyzed as supports of a rigid rotor system as well as a flexible rotor system. Depending on the existence of the unbalance force on the rotor/disks, autonomous (free vibration) and non-autonomous responses (mass unbalanced excitation) are both identified, and the nonlinear reaction force produced on the lubricant layer is obtained using the finite element method. In addition to isoviscosity lubricants, thermo-hydrodynamic lubricant model is developed to investigate thermal effects on rotordynamic bifurcations; in the procedure, a variable viscosity Reynolds equation and the energy equation are solved simultaneously. For computation efficiency in the analytical bifurcation study, an advanced shooting algorithm, which is combined with the deflation theory and the parallel computing strategy, is proposed for both the autonomous and the non-autonomous cases. In the study with flexible rotors, the finite element based beam models are employed and the model reduction technique such as Component Mode Synthesis is utilized to condense the system degree of freedom. This dissertation consists of four main discussions regarding: 1) nonlinear response and bifurcations of a rigid rotor supported by FRBs; 2) effects of a thermo-hydrodynamic (THD) FRB model on rotordynamic bifurcations; 3) nonlinear response and bifurcations of a rigid rotor supported by TPJBs; 4) extension of study to general, complex, multi-mass rotor beam models. In case 1), multiple coexistent solutions and bifurcation scenarios are identified, and those are depended on the ratio of floating ring length to diameter (L/D). Numerical illustrations regarding jumps between two stable limit cycles and quenching large vibrations are demonstrated, and chaos is investigated with the aid of Lyanpunov exponent. In case 2), the Hopf bifurcation onset is strongly dependent on thermal conditions, and the saddle node bifurcation points are significantly shifted compared to the isothermal model. In addition, the unbalanced responses stability and bifurcation onsets are highly reliant on the lubricant supply temperature. In case 3), loci of bifurcations are identified, and heavily loaded bearings and/or high unbalance force may induce consecutive transference of response in forms of synchronous to sub-synchronous, quasi-periodic responses and chaotic motions. The periodic doubling bifurcations, saddle node bifurcations and corresponding local stability are reliably determined by selections of pad preload, pivot offset, and lubricant viscosity sets. Les politiques économiques menées depuis les années 1990 dans les pays de la zone euro échouent à répondre à la question centrale de la crise, le manque d’emplois. Des politiques de déflation compétitive ont été imposées aux pays en difficulté, notamment à la Grèce après 2008. Pour analyser les aspects factuels et les enjeux théoriques de ces politiques, nous utilisons une démarche comparative qui croise l'histoire économique et la théorie économique.La politique menée au Royaume-Uni de 1920 à 1931 présente de nombreuses similitudes avec celle conduite en Grèce de 2008 à 2015 (chapitre 1). Les échecs des expériences de politique déflationniste menées dans l’Europe de l’entre-deux guerres ont conduit à une remise en cause théorique, dont J. M.Keynes a été le principal acteur, en montrant la nécessité de prendre en compte la demande globale dans la politique économique (chapitre 2). Les idées et les politiques keynésiennes, après avoir connu le succès durant les années 1950 et 1960, ont été abandonnées et rejetées théoriquement. Aussi, la politique de déflation compétitive a-t-elle été de nouveau mise en oeuvre (chapitre 3). D’autres pays ont conduit des politiques différentes, qui présentent pourtant des fondements théoriques et des limites communs avec la déflation compétitive. Leurs résultats plaident à nouveau pour un soutien de la demande globale (chapitre4). Néanmoins, une croissance accélérée ne répondrait pas au manque d’emploi, car il ne dépend pas mécaniquement de la croissance – ni aux défis écologiques. Intégrer les variations du volume global et de la durée moyenne du travail dans l’analyse rendrait les politiques économiques plus efficaces (chapitre 5).

The economic policies carried out since the 1990s in Euroland have failed to respond to the central issue of the crisis: the lack of employment. Based on austerity as a mean to achieve competitivness, competitive deflation policies have been imposed from 2008 onwards to countries having difficulties in the zone,particularly Greece. To analyze the factual aspects and the theoretical issues of these policies, we have used a comparative approach that makes economic history and economic theory meet.The policy carried out in the United Kingdom from 1920 to 1931 shows many similarities to that carried out in Greece from 2008 to 2015 (chapter 1). The failures of the experiments with deflation policies in interwarEurope led to theoretical questioning whose main actor was J. M. Keynes, by showing that it was necessary to take into account aggregate demand in economic policy (chapter 2). The keynesian ideas and policies were a success during the 1950s and the 1960s before being dropped and theoretically rejected.Consequently, the competitive deflation policy was implemented again (chapter 3). Other countries have carried out different experiments ; yet they show common theoretical foundations and limits with competitive deflation. Todas as referências sobre as quais a Zona Euro se ergueu foram postas em causa no dia em que se iniciou a crise. O choque inicial teve início com a chamada crise do suprime nos Estados Unidos tendo-se alastrado globalmente afetando, de forma particular, a União Europeia. Esta ganhou uma dinâmica própria na sequência de problemas estruturais já existentes na União, que vieram ao de cima, impedindo-a de dar uma resposta coerente aos problemas da crise conjuntural. O presente estudo justifica-se pelas mudanças que se fizeram sentir desde então. Pode-se mesmo classificar o período iniciado de transformador, inovador, extravagante ou, simplesmente, incomum, no quadro do que tem sido a evolução da zona euro. Várias ocorrências atípicas se sucederam: estagflação seguida de deflação, taxas de juro nulas e medidas extraordinárias de política monetária. O foco do presente trabalho recai sobre o fenómeno da deflação e das medidas extraordinárias de política monetária, incluindo as taxas de juro nulas e o que daí resulta. Assim, pretende-se dar resposta à questão se as medidas não convencionais do Banco Central Europeu conseguiram dar resposta ao fenómeno da deflação (e taxas de inflação muito reduzidas) recuperando a estabilidade de preços. Para isso, utiliza-se uma abordagem teórico-descritiva, assente numa análise de alguns indicadores, posteriormente analisados de forma qualitativa. Concluiu-se que, apesar das medidas inovativas, a abordagem do BCE não conseguiu até agora dar resposta aos problemas essenciais vividos pelos Estados-Membros da Zona Euro, nomeadamente, o da estabilidade de preços.

All the foundations on which the Euro Zone rose were called into question in the day that the current crisis began. The initial impact began with the so-called subprime crisis in the United States taking up sprawled globally affecting, in a very particular way, the European Union. This gained its own dynamics, worsening the already existing structural problems, and blocking a coherent and united response to the crisis. This study is justified by the dramatic changes felt since then. This period may even be classified as transforming, innovative, extravagant or, at least, unusual in the context of what has been the evolution of the eurozone. Several atypical events have taken place: deflation followed by stagflation, zero interest rates, and extraordinary monetary policy measures. This work focuses on the deflation phenomenon and the extraordinary monetary policy measures, also including the zero interest rates and its related effects. Thus, it is intended to answer the question whether the unconventional measures the European Central Bank failed to respond to the phenomenon of deflation (and very low inflation rates) restoring price stability, or not. For this, a theoretical and descriptive approach was employed, based on the analysis of certain indicators, posteriorly explored in a quantitative way. Cette thèse présente un travail sur les méthodes itératives pour résoudre des systèmes linéaires en réduisant les communications pendant les calculs parallèles. Principalement, on est intéressé par les systèmes linéaires qui proviennent des simulations de réservoirs. Trois approches, que l’on peut considérer comme indépendantes, sont présentées. Nous considérons les systèmes linéaires non-symétriques (resp. symétriques), cela correspond au schéma explicite (resp. implicite) du problème modèle. On commence par présenter une approche qui ajoute plusieurs directions de recherche à chaque itération au lieu d’une seule direction comme dans le cas des méthodes classiques. Ensuite, on considère les stratégies de recyclage des espaces de recherche. Ces stratégies réduisent, par un facteur considérable, le nombre d’itérations global pour résoudre une séquence de systèmes linéaires. On fait un rappel des stratégies existantes et l’on en présente une nouvelle. On introduit et détaille l’implémentation parallèle de ces méthodes en utilisant un langage bas niveau. On présente des résultats numériques séquentiels et parallèles. Finalement, on considère la méthode de décomposition de domaine algébrique. Dans un environnement algébrique, on étudie le préconditionneur de Schwarz additif à deux niveaux. On fournit la forme algébrique explicite d’une classe d’espaces grossiers locaux qui bornent le conditionnement par un nombre donné a priori.

This thesis presents a work on iterative methods for solving linear systems that aim at reducing the communication in parallel computing. The main type of linear systems in which we are interested arises from a real-life reservoir simulation. Both schemes, implicit and explicit, of modelling the system are taken into account. Three approaches are studied separately. We consider non-symmetric (resp. symmetric) linear systems. This corresponds to the explicit (resp. implicit) formulation of the model problem. We start by presenting an approach that adds multiple search directions per iteration rather than one as in the classic iterative methods. Then, we discuss different strategies of recycling search subspaces. These strategies reduce the global iteration count of a considerable factor during a sequence of linear systems. We review different existing strategies and present a new one. We discuss the parallel implementation of these methods using a low-level language. Numerical experiments for both sequential and parallel implementations are presented. We also consider the algebraic domain decomposition approach. In an algebraic framework, we study the two-level additive Schwarz preconditioner. We provide the algebraic explicit form of a class of local coarse spaces that bounds the spectral condition number of the preconditioned matrix by a number pre-defined.

▼ The Helmholtz equation is the simplest possible model for the wave propagation. Perhaps this is the reason, despite denying traditional iterative methods like Krylov sub-space methods, Multigrids, etcetera, numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation has been an interesting and abundant problem to researchers since years. The work in this dissertation is also classified as an attempt to develop fast and robust iterative methods for the solution of the Helmholtz equation. This works is specified for applications in seismic imaging-Geophysics, where usually high frequency are used. Thus we will be targeting large wavenumber Helmholtz problems. The finite difference discretization of the Helmholtz equation with typically given Absorbing (Sommerfeld) boundary conditions gives rise to symmetric, non-Hermitian, indefinite linear systems. Resolution of large wavenumber requires larger number of grid points, thus large linear systems. Many (sparse) direct solvers and hybrid (direct and iterative) solvers have been proposed, but it is quite obvious for very large problems that (sparse) direct solvers have been too much depending upon memory, which makes them less acceptable. Quite a lot of work has been invested in researching iterative solution methods for the Helmholtz equation since many decades. The indefiniteness, which increases with respect to an increase in the wavenumber, poses extra problems for iterative solvers and robust solution of indefinite (large) linear system forms an important research activity. Many iterative techniques like domain decomposition methods, multigrid methods and preconditioners for Krylov subspace methods have been proposed but non of them has been quite robust. For multigrid methods, indefiniteness arises difficulties in having both good smoothing property and constructing appropriate coarse-grid approximations of the problem, which are responsible for further reduction of low frequency errors. Many attempts have been spent in algebraic variants of multigrid methods. Some of them works well with limitation of homogeneity. Most of them fails to show satisfactory convergence. The same holds for Krylov subspace methods. One of the difficulties for Krylov methods is to find a cheap and performing preconditioner for the indefinite Helmholtz equation. An overview of preconditioners, ranging from classical to matrix based, for indefinite Helmholtz linear system has been give in this thesis. A matrix-based complex shifted Laplace preconditioner (CSLP) has been seen as best in the available ones. However, with increasing wavenumbers CSLP shows a slow convergence behavior. We address this issue continuing using CSLP while taking care of its requirement of specific complex shifts. The projection-type preconditioners have been widely investigated by researchers in numerical analysis community. We propose the projection-type deflation preconditioner to tackle the near-singular nodes, which are the cause of the decay the convergence of, this otherwise well performing, CSLP.
