▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Assets allow organizations to achieve their strategic objectives. Asset management translate these objectives into asset related decision and actions. A key enabler of asset management decision-making is data. Data quality, however, is a common challenge faced by many organizations, especially in the asset-intensive industry. This problem is compounded by the multitude of business intelligence systems and data standards competing for market share in some subset of an organization’s data pipeline. With rapidly increasing data volumes and global competition demanding optimal management of assets, data quality is a problem that all asset mangers will have to face. With the release of the ISO 55000 series of international standards for asset management in February 2014, many asset managers will seek to implement a compliant asset management system. The ISO 55000, however, intends to be applicable to the broadest range of assets, organizations and cultures and therefore does not provide specific technical requirements. Previous studies have attempted to provide such technical requirements for data quality in asset management and subsequently contributed one more standard or system to an already crowded market. Asset managers’ continued struggle with data quality is thus not due to a lack of standards or systems. In fact, the many competing and often incompatible systems and standards are one of the many reasons for poor data quality. The severity of data quality issues and their impact on asset management decision-making were observed in a Southern African diamond mine. A preliminary literature review confirmed that these observations were not isolated. Data quality, however, was also found to be a complex and contextspecific problem, especially in asset management. Thus, instead of developing yet another standard or system to either replace or provide compatibility between existing systems, this study adopts a pragmatic approach to develop a framework to help asset managers identify their most critical data quality issues. To answer the question of what such a framework would look like, a pragmatic research approach was adopted. The framework and its components were developed through an iterative cycle of development and evaluation. Applicable knowledge from a comprehensive literature review assured innovation and the business needs from the diamond mine case study ensured that the solution is relevant. The study found that the framework requires three components to be of value. The three components are: (1) a data pipeline reference model, (2) a methodology to guide asset managers in collecting the relevant data and (3) a tool to help asset managers populate their data pipeline model and identify data quality issues. The usefulness (which is the measure of value in the pragmatic world view) of the framework was demonstrated by applying the framework in practice and fixing the critical data quality issues that it identified. Dempster-Shafer theory nowadays is used to model the epistemic (subjective) uncertainty as an alternative to the traditional probabilistic approach. Few decades back, Bayesian probability theory was used for this purpose as to handle problems encountered in different engineering disciplines. Since bayesian theory primarily needs precise measurements from experiments, this requirement restricted its application for problems having weak and sparse information and urged for further research to explore new techniques. In the meanwhile concept of imprecise probability came to light ensued different formalism, among them Dempster-Shafer theory is a prominent frame work. In this thesis Dempster-Shafer theory (D-S Theory) a data fusion technique is discussed along with subsequent improvements for combining conflicting information in D-S structure. In mining engineering during underground extraction of minerals (coal particularly) chances of occurrence of natural hazards like mine fires, gas outbursts, flooding with water and subsidence of overlying strata etc are although rare but with high uncertainty thus provides weak information about the system. Their history having detailed records is short. To wrestle with such problems, Dempster-Shafer formalism is a strong and effective tool. Here in this thesis complete modus operandi of the Dempster-Shafer formalism has been narrated with the help of illustrative examples. And by using this technique, quality of mine air in a coal fire zone is ascertained and a Mine Fire Index (MFI) is developed which is easy to use even for the lower hierarchy of the mine management and is helpful in making decision.

▼ Coal quality plays a crucial role both economically and environmentally in the operation of a coal-fired power plant. These plants are designed to operate most efficiently when coal of consistently good quality is used as the feed. For example, the ash content should be monitored to control slagging problems in the burners. For emission control purposes the sulfur content of the feed should be carefully scrutinized. This realization of the importance of coal quality to the end-user has made the prediction of coal quality an important concern. Computerized mine planning systems can be used to help suppliers predict the quality of future coal shipments. One such system was implemented at an underground coal mine to determine its performance in an operating environment. Following some extensive revisions to the system, the results of the implementation exercise showed the ability of this mine planning system to account for coal quality while producing a workable short-range plan. To be of direct use to the end-user, the mine planning results should be adjusted to account for mining dilution and subsequent beneficiation of the run-of-mine coal. To help power plant owners in predicting the quality of the power plant feed a computer program was developed to solve the blending problem faced by plants dependent on multiple sources of supply. This interactive program utilizes the predictions from the mine planning system to obtain a goal programming formulation of the blending problem. This type of problem formulation gives the program the flexibility needed to solve the blending problem in both long and short term time frames. Use of the program in both planning scenarios was illustrated by examples. The results showed the ability of the program to determine the best blend possible based on a set of user-specified objectives. Use of this interactive blending program in conjunction with the mine planning system provides the capability of computerized prediction of coal quality from mine mouth to blended plant feed. Implementation of these planning aids on a routine basis will assist the owners of coal-fired power plants in their attempts to maximize plant efficiency and maintain environmental standards. As the average user is often faced with a variety of motivations and distractions when determining whether to download an application, this study created an experimental setting in which certain participants were told that they would have to justify their decision to download with a sample of their peers upon reviewing typical opt-in privacy policies, while others faced a time restraint when making a decision to download.Based on the academic literature, this study hypothesized that 1) When faced with a time restraint, participants would be less likely to download an application than those who did not face a time restraint; 2) Participants who were asked to justify the basis of their decision would be less likely to download an application than those who were not asked to justify their decision; 3) Participants who faced a time restraint and who were not asked to consider the basis of their decisions prior to download would be more likely to download an application than those in other experimental conditions; 4) Participants who did not face a time restraint and who were asked to consider the basis of their decision prior to download would be less likely to download an application than those in other experimental conditions; and 5) Participants who scored higher on a self-efficacy scale would be more likely to download applications than those who scored lower. It also questioned how the various factors outlined in this study (motivation, opportunity, and self-efficacy) worked together to affect the decision-making process.The results of this study help to show that while motivation and opportunity has often been shown to play a role in decision-making processes, age, experience, and self- efficacy may play a larger part in the access mobile application users are willing to provide to third-party developers than was previously considered. While individuals boast the importance of protecting their privacy online, the more one interacts with the technology the less risk they come to expect when deciding whether or not to accept permissions and download a mobile application. Les terrains ultramafiques de Nouvelle-Calédonie, riches en Ni, Co, Mn et Cr sont exploités par des mines à ciel ouvert, ce qui génère l'émission de poussières riches en métaux. L'objectif de ce travail est de développer des approches pour estimer le risque environnemental lié aux poussières émises par les mines à ciel ouvert et les usines de traitement du minerai de nickel. L'estimation de la fraction biodisponible des métaux contenus dans deux fractions granulométriques de poussières, celle inférieure à 100 ~m mobilisable par le vent (F<1 OO~m.) et celle susceptible de pénétrer le système respiratoire (PM1 0), a été réalisée par extractions cinétiques à I'EDTA. L'obtention des PM10 a nécessité la mise au point d'une technique de tri par transport des particules dans un tube horizontal grâce à un flux d'azote. Les extractions cinétiques ont permis de discrimtner trois fractions de métaux: rapidement extraite, lentement extraite et non biodisponibles. Les concentrations en métaux potentiellement biodisponibles sont toujours très élevées et la fraction lentement extraite est toujours la plus concentrée. Pour F<1 00 ~m. les constantes cinétiques de la fraction lentement extraite sont plus faibles pour les poussières de sols miniers que celles de sols forestiers. Les poussières issues de sols miniers seraient alors un réservoir en éléments métalliques biodisponibles à plus long terme. La bioindication lichénique avec traitement en données compositionnelles des concentrations en métaux permet de définir un indice de dispersion des poussières. Cette méthodologie pourrait appuyer les réseaux de surveillance de la qualité de l'air en Nouvelle-Calédonie.

Bioavailability estimation of nickel, cobalt and manganese in dust from ultramafic soils likely to be mobilized by wind and~eve lopment of a bioindication tool using lichen for dust emitted by mining activities in New Caledonia New Caledonian altered ultramafic soils, particularly rich in Ni, Co, Mn and Cr, are extracted by opencast mines which generale dust rich in metals. The objective of th is work is to develop approaches for environmental risk assessment of dust emitted by opencast mines and nickel ore metallurgical plants. The assessmentof metals' bioavailable fraction from two dust granulometrie size fractions, one less than 100 IJm which is mobilizable by wind (F<1001Jm,) and another one able to penetrate the respiratory system (PM 1 0), has been determined by kinetic extraction with EDT A. The development of a new separation deviee based on particle transport subjected to a nitrogen flux in a horizontal tube has been necessary for PM1 0 segregation. Kinetic extractions le ad to the distinction of th ree metal pools: rapidly labile, less rapidly labile and non-bioavailable. Trace metal potentially bioavailable concentrations were always high and the less rapidly labile pool is always the most concentrated pool. Human capability to recall episodic memories depends on how much time has passed since the memory was encoded. This dependency is described by a memory retrieval curve that reflects an interesting phenomenon referred to as a reminiscence bump - a tendency for older people to recall more memories formed during their young adulthood than in other periods of life. This phenomenon can be modelled with an attractor neural network, for example, the firing-rate Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) with incremental learning. In this work, the mechanisms underlying the reminiscence bump in the neural network model are systematically studied. The effects of synaptic plasticity, network architecture and other relevant parameters on the characteristics of the reminiscence bump are systematically investigated. The most influential factors turn out to be the magnitude of dopamine-linked plasticity at birth and the time constant of exponential plasticity decay with age that set the position of the bump. The other parameters mainly influence the general amplitude of the lifespan retrieval curve. Furthermore, the recency phenomenon, i.e. the tendency to remember the most recent memories, can also be parameterized by adding a constant to the exponentially decaying plasticity function representing the decrease in the level of dopamine neurotransmitters.

Människans förmåga att återkalla episodiska minnen beror på hur lång tid som gått sedan minnena inkodades. Detta beroende beskrivs av en sk glömskekurva vilken uppvisar ett intressant fenomen som kallas ”reminiscence bump”. Detta är en tendens hos äldre att återkalla fler minnen från ungdoms- och tidiga vuxenår än från andra perioder i livet. Detta fenomen kan modelleras med ett neuralt nätverk, sk attraktornät, t ex ett icke spikande Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) med inkrementell inlärning. I detta arbete studeras systematiskt mekanismerna bakom ”reminiscence bump” med hjälp av denna neuronnätsmodell. Exempelvis belyses betydelsen av synaptisk plasticitet, nätverksarkitektur och andra relavanta parameterar för uppkomsten av och karaktären hos detta fenomen. De mest inflytelserika faktorerna för bumpens position befanns var initial dopaminberoende plasticitet vid födseln samt tidskonstanten för plasticitetens avtagande med åldern. De andra parametrarna påverkade huvudsakligen den generella amplituden hos kurvan för ihågkomst under livet. Dessutom kan den s k nysseffekten (”recency effect”), dvs tendensen att bäst komma ihåg saker som hänt nyligen, också parametriseras av en konstant adderad till den annars exponentiellt avtagande plasticiteten, som kan representera densiteten av dopaminreceptorer.

Cette thèse est une contribution à la connaissance des impacts, quantitatifs et qualitatifs, liés à la déprise minière de la région d’Alès. Le travail a consisté en l’analyse et l’interprétation de données quantitatives et qualitatives des eaux d’émergences des anciennes mines de charbon du bassin alésien afin de connaître la composition chimique des eaux d’émergences et de l’expliquer. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé des Analyses en Composantes Principales (ACP), des diagrammes de Piper et de Schoeller-Berkalov sur l’ensemble des émergences. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons réalisé une analyse de l’évolution temporelle des concentrations de chaque élément pour les émergences où les données sont disponibles. L’aspect quantitatif est étudié grâce à une synthèse des connaissances disponible sur le réservoir minier de Fontanes (géologie, répartition spatiale, données de pompage et de niveaux piézométriques). Certaines émergences présentent une qualité qui rend impossible leur rejet direct dans l’environnement et il est important dans cette situation de bien définir la masse d’eau concernée. Pour cela, nous avons élaboré un modèle hydrodynamique par automates séquentiels. Il est appliqué aux anciens travaux de Rochebelle-St-Martin, aboutissant à la détermination des paramètres perméabilité et épaisseur du réservoir par reconstitution du niveau piézométrique du réservoir tout en tenant compte d’un pompage encore maintenu dans l’exploitation. Cette modélisation permet de mieux connaître les paramètres définissant l’aquifère minier dans la perspective d’exploiter cette réserve. Ces eaux de mines présentent une qualité médiocre. A partir d’une meilleure connaissance hydrodynamique du système, obtenue par la modélisation, il devient possible de proposer une valorisation de cette eau par utilisation de ses calories en géothermie connaissant la géométrie du réservoir minier. Les anciennes exploitations minières sont à nouveau source d’énergie

This thesis is a contribution to the knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative impacts, linked to the abandonment of the mining works on Alès coal basin. This work consisted in analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data on the waters outflows of former coal mines in order to determine the chemical composition of groundwaters outflows and the water chemistry. For that, we used principal component analysis, diagrams of Piper and Schoeller-Berkalov on all waters outflows. Secondly, we analyzed the temporal evolution of concentrations of each element for the waters outflows. The quantitative aspect is therefore considered by the synthesis of knowledge available on the mining reservoir of Fontanes (geology, spatial distribution, pumping data and piezometrics levels). Some groundwaters outflows have a quality that makes their direct discharge into the environment impossible and it is important, in this situation, to define the affected body of the water. IN THE PRESENT DISSERTATION A BASIC MODEL FOR THE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF MINING PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IS DEVELOPED. THE MODEL IS IMPLEMENTED IN KARDIA FIELD AND SOUTH-FIELD OPENCAST MINES OF PTOLEMAIDA-AMYDEO LIGNITE CENTRE OF PUBLIC POWER CORPORATION FOR THE TIME PERIOD 1981-1990 AND IN THE LIGNITE SUBSECTOR AS A WHOLE FOR THE PERIOD 1970-88. TWO ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES ARE USED: THE PARAMETRIC APPROACH, FOR LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS AND THE NON-PARAMETRIC APPROACH, FOR TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY MEASUREMENT. THE APPLICATION OF TWO APPROACHES PROVIDES THE SAME RESULTS, EXCEPT FOR THE SOUTH-FIELD MINE CASE, AS IT IS SUPPORTED BY CALCULATED RANK CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS. FROM THE VARIOUS CASE STUDIES COMBINED RESULTS, IT FOLLOWS THAT LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT SHOULD BEBASED MAINLY ON THE EFFICIENT UTILISATION OF CAPITAL EQUIPMENT.

▼ Various production sampling tests were performed during 1987 and 1988, at the FMC Gold Paradise Peak precious metal open-pit mine. Testing of blasthole hammer and reverse circulation drill sampling was conducted to determine what degree of sampling error (bias) was being introduced by drilling methods and sample acquisition techniques. Statistical analysis of sample data obtained from run-of-mine and high grade ore, using a below- the-deck frame mounted bag, has indicated that on average a sampling error of 24 to 29 percent can result from production bench drilling employing air hammer methods. Tests employing a below-the-deck wedge shaped pie pan have demonstrated that on average sampling error can be reduced to 17% due to an improved representation of the actual chip pile particle size distribution. However, problems remain with over and underfilled sample containers due to various drilling conditions. Comparison of rotary reverse circulation with down-the-hole hammer sampling of a mill feed grade ore test block (31,000 ton), has shown that on average reverse circulation upgraded over blasthole hammer sampling by as much as 6 to 7% for gold and 8 to 11% silver. Bulk sampling of the entire test block during mill feed transport to the fine ore bin, indicated that the bulk chip pile samples for 140 blastholes upgraded by 0.03 oz./ton gold and 2.2 oz./ton silver over the average mill bulk sample grade. Upgrading of both reverse circulation and blasthole hammer sample data suggests that significant sampling error is being introduced in the form of bias that produces non-representative (upgraded and downgraded) assays caused by contamination or loss of particles into the actual container (bag or pan) employed. The main recommendations obtained from these tests and their statistical results are that 1: to improve acquisition of the chip/dust particle size distribution that is delivered from the blasthole, it is essential that larger sample volumes be taken (i.e. through-the-deck pie pan or larger bag(s)) in conjuction with the use of full wrap-around drill skirts, 2: consideration should be given to develope an automated sampling system incorporating down-the- hole sample acquisition, cyclone collection, and on-site splitting.
