Les applications vidéo rencontrent un franc succes dans les nouveaux réseaux de communication. Leur utilisation dans des contextes de plus en plus difficiles : réseaux de paquets non fiables (internet), diffusion vers des récepteurs mobiles via des canaux sans fil, ont requis le développement de nouvelles solutions plus efficaces et mieux adaptées. Les travaux de cette thèse sont une tentative de réponse à ces besoins. Les solutions qui ont été développées peuvent être regroupées en deux ensembles : des solutions issues de travaux nouveaux développés dans un contexte d'utilisation ordinaire et des solutions issues de l'amélioration et l'optimisation de travaux existants développés pour des contextes extrêmes.Le canal de Bernoulli a représenté pour nous le cadre de travail pour le développement des nouvelles solutions. Ainsi pour les applications de diffusion vidéo, nous avons ciblé la protection inégale et avons développé un mécanisme à protection inégale des données vidéo (DA-UEP). Ce mécanisme se situe à proximité de la source vidéo et adapte le niveau de protection des données à leur degré d'importance. Son originalité réside dans sa manière d'intégrer la particularité d'interdépendances des données vidéo dans le générateur de la protection inégale. Dans un travail d'approfondissement et d'exploration, nous avons combiné la protection inégale des couches hautes produite par DA-UEP avec de la protection inégale de la couche physique produite par de la modulation hiérarchique. L'optimisation de ce système a permis d'obtenir des gains significatifs et a validé le bien fondé de cette piste de recherche. Pour les communications vidéo interactives, nous avons évalué les performances du mécanisme Tetrys pour les communications vidéo. Ce mécanisme de codage à la volée avec intégration des acquittements a permis d'obtenir des résultats à la hauteur de ceux obtenus par la protection inégale dans un cadre de diffusion. Ces résultats ont aussi permis de mettre en avant tout le potentiel de ce mécanisme.Pour les canaux satellites mobiles, nous nous sommes intéressés à la diffusion vidéo vers des récepteurs mobiles. Dans ce cadre, nous avons évalué des mécanismes tels que les codes correcteurs d'erreurs, les entrelaceurs de la couche physique et de la couche liaison et les codes à effacement de niveau intermédiaire. Nous avons travaillé sur un canal réaliste en prenant en compte les contraintes pratiques telles que les temps de zapping et la vitesse de déplacement des récepteurs. Nous avons révélé les relations qui existent entre vitesse de déplacement, étalement spatial et qualité de réception. Ainsi, nous avons pu mettre en évidence les combinaisons de mécanismes qui permettent d'obtenir les meilleurs résultats en termes de fiabilité et de temps de zapping dans ce contexte particulier.

▼ This thesis is concerned with the problem related to data storage and management. A large storage server consists of several hundreds of disks. To balance the load across disks, the system computes data layouts that are typically adjusted according to the workload. As workloads change over time, the system recomputes the data layout, and rearranges the data items according to the new layout. We identify the problem of computing an efficient data migration plan that converts an initial layout to a target layout. We define the data migration problem as follows: for each item, there are a set of disks that have the item (sources) and a set of disks that want to receive the item (destinations). We want to migrate the data items from the sources to destinations. The crucial constraint is that each disk can participate in only one transfer at a time. The most common objective has been to minimize the makespan, which is the time when we finish all the migrations. The problem is NP-hard, and we develop polynomial time algorithms with constant factor approximation guarantees and several other heuristic algorithms. We present the performance evaluation of the different methods through an experimental study. We also consider the data migration problem to minimize the sum of completion times over all migration jobs or storage devices. Minimizing the sum of completion times of jobs is one of the most common objectives in scheduling literature. On the other hand, since a storage device may run inefficiently while the device is involved in migrations, another interesting objective is to minimize the sum of completion times over all storage devices. We present hardness results and constant factor approximation algorithms for these objectives. In addition, we consider the case when we have a heterogeneous collection of machines. We assume that heterogeneity is modeled by a non-uniform speed of the sending machine. For the basic problem of multicasting and broadcasting in the model, we show that Fastest Node First scheme gives a approximation ratio of 1.5 for minimizing the makespan. ▼ ABSTRACT Broadcasting data delivery is rapidly becoming the good choice for disseminating information to a massive user population in many new application areas where the client-to-server communication is limited. There are two different ways of data dissemination. One is called push-based that the data items are broadcasted periodically in the channels, another one is called pull-based that the client requests a piece of data on the uplink channel and the server responds by sending this piece of data to the client. In push-based, most of the previous researches assume that each mobile client needs only one data item. However, in many situations, a mobile client might need more than one data item. In pull-based, the data items were broadcasted dynamically. Most of the previous researches assume that the data items which requested by the clients are of the same size. However, the data items may of different sizes in reality. In this thesis, we propose Improved QDS Expansion Method (Improved-QEM) and Heuristic On-line Algorithm to overcome the above two weaknesses, respectively. The issue of scheduling the broadcast data for the situation that each client may access multiple data items can not be simply considered as multiple subissues. There have been two methods was proposed, Query Expansion Method (QEM) and Modified Query Expansion Methods (Modified-QEM). These two methods are heuristic-based algorithm and do not provide the optimal solution. To improve the performance, our Improved-QEM is an efficient scheduling for query-set-based broadcasting, which is integrated with Query Expansion Method (QEM) and mining association rules technique. The mining association rules can globally find the data item sets (large itemsets) which are requested by clients, frequently. From our simulation results, we show that, as compared to the local optimal approach in the previous methods, our Improved-QEM can construct the schedule with the smaller TQD than that constructed by QEM and Modified-QEM, where TQD is denotes Total Query Distance and is proportional to the average access time. The on-line (push-based) algorithms are easy to adapt to time varying demands for the data items, which uses some decision-making mechanism to determine which data item is to be broadcasted next. Hence, when the number of data items is huge, it is important to schedule broadcasting program such that, it can provide the small overall mean access time. Therefore, Vaidya and Hameed have proposed two on-line algorithms, On-line Algorithm and On-line with Bucketing Algorithm. The main disadvantage of On-line Algorithm is the heavy run-time overhead and the main disadvantage of On-line Algorithm with Bucketing is the poor performance of the overall mean access time. Therefore, we propose the heuristic on-line algorithm to solve these two problems. From our simulation results, we show that our heuristic algorithm provides the performance that closes to the overall mean access time and has with low run-time overhead. Les infrastructures de calcul très haute performance ont connu une croissance rapide en particulier ces dernières années. Cette croissance a toujours été motivée par les besoins accrus en puissance de calcul qu'expriment les scientifiques dans divers domaines. Cependant, ces systèmes devenus de plus en plus larges constituent de gros consommateurs d'électricité et consomment déjà plusieurs mégawatts. Afin de consommer ''moins'' et ''mieux'', nous avons proposé un environnement logiciel qui d'une part, permet de choisir avant de pré-exécuter l'application, les versions de services applicatifs consommant le moins d'énergie, et qui d'autre part, repose sur une grille électrique intelligente pour planifier les réservations des ressources de calcul de ces infrastructures. Cet environnement, appelé SESAMES, a été adapté à deux services applicatifs indispensables au calcul très haute performance : la tolérance aux pannes et la diffusion de données. Des validations expérimentales ont montré que l'on peut réduire la consommation énergétique de chacun des deux services étudiés en s'appuyant sur les estimations énergétiques précises fournies par SESAMES pour n'importe quel contexte d'exécution et pour n'importe quelle plate-forme dotée de wattmètres. Notre méthodologie d'estimation repose sur une description du contexte d'exécution et sur une calibration de la plate-forme d'exécution basée sur la collecte de mesures énergétiques. Des simulations ont démontré que l'ordonnanceur multi-critères des réservations de ressources proposé dans SESAMES, permet de réduire à la fois la consommation énergétique, le coût financier et l'impact environnemental de ces réservations, tout en respectant les contraintes imposées par l'utilisateur et le fournisseur d'énergie.

High performance computing (HPC) infrastructures have experienced a rapid growth, particularly these last years. This growth has been driven by the increased need in terms of computational power expressed by scientists in various fields. However, their increasing size makes them important electricity consumers since they already consume several megawatts. In order to consume "less" and better", we proposed a framework which permits to choose the less consuming versions of the services before pre-executing the application. In addition, our framework relies on a smart grid in order to schedule resource reservations on these computing infrastructures. This framework, called SESAMES, is adapted to two services required in high performance computing: fault tolerance and data broadcasting. Experimental validations have shown that we can reduce the energy consumption of both services by relying on accurate energy estimations provided by SESAMES for any execution context and for any platform equipped with wattmeters. Our estimation methodology is based on a description of the execution context and on a platform calibration that consists of gathering energy measurements. Esta tese de doutorado apresenta uma metodologia de reconfiguração de hardware, que utiliza o sinal da emissora de TV digital como base para atualizar módulos de receptores de TV digital. A metodologia proposta permite que núcleos de hardware sejam sinalizados, durante a geração do fluxo de transporte, transmitidos e posteriormente remontados. Desse modo, os núcleos recebidos são usados na reconfiguração de dispositivos baseados em lógica reprogramável (field programable gate array - FPGA), que estão integrados ao hardware de cada unidade receptora. Além disso, a sinalização de conteúdo permite a distinção entre núcleos sintetizados para FPGAs de diferentes fabricantes, o que habilita receptores de TV digital a selecionar somente núcleos de hardware relativos aos modelos de FPGA utilizados. Os resultados obtidos com os experimentos realizados, durante o desenvolvimento deste trabalho, consistem em uma prova de conceito e demonstram a viabilidade técnica do uso desta metodologia de transmissão e reconfiguração, para núcleos pré-sintetizados de hardware enviados em um ambiente de televisão digital. Fabricantes de receptores poderiam utilizar os benefícios desta metodologia para o desenvolvimento de arquiteturas reconfiguráveis, o que permitiria a incorporação de avanços tecnológicos às funções de hardware do receptor e um maior controle do ciclo de vida de produto. Como resultado, futuras revisões de normas de TV Digital não resultariam em troca de equipamento.

This PhD thesis presents a novel hardware reconfiguration methodology, which uses the digital TV broadcast signal for reconfiguring hardware modules in digital TV receivers. The proposed methodology allows hardware cores to be signaled, during the transport stream generation step, transmitted and then reassembled. At the receiver, the recovered cores are then used to reconfigure reprogrammable field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, which are integrated into each receiver unit. Besides, content signaling allows receivers to choose between FPGA cores synthesized for different manufacturers, which enables receivers to select broadcast hardware cores related to the employed FPGA models. The results of the performed experiments, which were carried out during the development of this work, consist in a proof of concept and show the technical feasibility of this methodology, regarding reconfiguration of pre-synthesized hardware cores through the digital TV environment. Receiver manufacturers could benefit from this methodology for developing reconfigurable architectures, which would allow the incorporation of technological advances into receiver hardware and provide better control regarding product life cycle. As a result, future revisions of DTV standards could occur without the need for device replacement.

▼ The past few years have witnessed an overwhelming amount of research in the field of information security and privacy. An encouraging outcome of this research is the vast accumulation of theoretical models that help to capture the various threats that persistently hinder the best possible usage of today's powerful communication infrastructure. While theoretical models are essential to understanding the impact of any breakdown in the infrastructure, they are of limited application if the underlying business centric view is ignored. Information management in this context is the strategic management of the infrastructure, incorporating the knowledge about causes and consequences to arrive at the right balance between risk and profit. Modern information management systems are home to a vast repository of sensitive personal information. While these systems depend on quality data to boost the Quality of Service (QoS), they also run the risk of violating privacy regulations. The presence of network vulnerabilities also weaken these systems since security policies cannot always be enforced to prevent all forms of exploitation. This problem is more strongly grounded in the insufficient availability of resources, rather than the inability to predict zero-day attacks. System resources also impact the availability of access to information, which in itself is becoming more and more ubiquitous day by day. Information access times in such ubiquitous environments must be maintained within a specified QoS level. In short, modern information management must consider the mutual interactions between risks, resources and services to achieve wide scale acceptance. This dissertation explores these problems in the context of three important domains, namely disclosure control, security risk management and wireless data broadcasting. Research in these domains has been put together under the umbrella of multi-criteria decision making to signify that "business survival" is an equally important factor to consider while analyzing risks and providing solutions for their resolution. We emphasize that businesses are always bound by constraints in their effort to mitigate risks and therefore benefit the most from a framework that allows the exploration of solutions that abide by the constraints. Towards this end, we revisit the optimization problems being solved in these domains and argue that they oversee the underlying cost-benefit relationship. Our approach in this work is motivated by the inherent multi-objective nature of the problems. We propose formulations that help expose the cost-benefit relationship across the different objectives that must be met in these problems. Such an analysis provides a decision maker with the necessary information to make an informed decision on the impact of choosing a control measure over the business goals of an organization. ▼ The main goal of this dissertation is to study the Xlet-based interactive applications (such as advertisements, games, government services and early warning applications) in the digital television broadcasting environment and to improve their versatility, usability and interoperability through the simplification of their codes and content management methods. The EU had set an obligation for its member states to begin digital television broadcasting by 2012, therefore the development of such systems prior to this deadline had become a task of utmost importance in recent years. At present, there are two major systems of digital video broadcasting (DVB), which are DVB-HTML and DVB-J (DVB-Java). I decided to give more emphasis on DVB-J for my research, mainly because it’s more compatible with the interactive applications that are created with Java-based Xlets, and also because it’s easier to use, modify and update; hence the reason why DVB-J is the system that’s preferred by a larger number of television broadcasting corporations worldwide. DVB-J is also the digital video broadcasting standard that’s compatible with a larger number of MHP (Multimedia Home Platform, or DVB-MHP) systems that are utilized by the set-top-boxes for receiving interactive content (in the form of Xlets) during digital television broadcasts; as well as by handheld devices and web-based internet television networks. As of today, Italy (which has a large and expanding DVB-T network) is one of the leading countries in the world that extensively utilize DVB-MHP systems for sending and receiving interactive content during IDTV broadcasts. By 2009, several administrative regions in Italy had already completed the switch-off process of their analog broadcasting systems and had gone all-digital. Numerous interactive services are currently available in the IDTV broadcasting environment of Italy, ranging from IDTV-commerce and IDTV-government services to the use of a growing number of internet content. At present, the terrestrial antennas for sending the aerial digital signals of the DVB-T networks aren’t capable of receiving any return signals for interaction by mobile handsets like the DVB-H, therefore interactivity is currently limited to internet connection through DSL in stationary devices or to mobile telephone services in the outdoor environments. Internet connection, however, allows the interoperability between different types of stationary and mobile devices, such as television sets, PCs, notebook computers, mobile phones, DVB-H, BlackBerry and iPod. Due to the complexities which arise from the burden of having to provide an efficient and safe interoperability between an ever-increasing number of different device types, I based my research on developing a CMS that’s simple, flexible and easy to upgrade. ▼ Συνοψίζοντας, στη Διατριβή αυτή παρουσιάστηκαν τρία προσαρμοζόμενα πρωτόκολλα για ασύρματα δίκτυα. Όπως συζητήθηκε, η προσαρμοστικότητα αφορά τον αριθμό των σταθμών του δικτύου, τη μορφή του προσφερόμενου φόρτου στο δίκτυο και την κατάσταση των ασυρμάτων συνδέσεων. Στο Κεφάλαιο 1 πραγματοποιήθηκε μια εισαγωγή στη Διατριβή. Τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά της ασύρματης μετάδοσης, τα οποία επηρεάζουν το σχεδίασμά πρωτοκόλλων MAC για ασύρματα τοπικά δίκτυα παρουσιάστηκαν. Στη συνέχεια παρουσιάστηκαν οι κυριότερες τοπολογίες ασυρμάτων τοπικών δικτύων καθώς και τα κυριότερα MAC πρωτόκολλα για δίκτυα τέτοιας κατηγορίας. Το Κεφάλαιο 1 πραγματοποίησε επίσης εισαγωγή στα συστήματα εκπομπής πληροφορίας και έκλεισε με μια εισαγωγή στα μανθάνοντα αυτόματα, τα οποία είναι μηχανισμοί που έχουν βρει εφαρμογή σε συστήματα θα πρέπει να έχουν τη δυνατότητα να αποκτήσουν γνώση σχετικά με την συμπεριφορά του περιβάλλοντος στο οποίο λειτουργούν. Το Κεφάλαιο 2 παρουσίασε το TRAP. Το TRAP υπερτερεί έναντι του υπάρχοντος πρωτοκόλλου RAP, το οποίο χρησιμοποιεί ένα σταθερό αριθμό τυχαίων διευθύνσεων ο οποίος οδηγεί σε μη αποδοτική λειτουργία σε περιπτώσεις πολλών ενεργών σταθμών. Αντίθετα, στο TRAP ο αριθμός των τυχαίων διευθύνσεων προσαρμόζεται ανάλογα με τον αριθμό των ενεργών σταθμών. Το TRAP χρησιμοποιεί ένα στάδιο ανταγωνισμού βασισμένο σε TDMA. Το μήκος του σταδίου ανταγωνισμού βασίζεται στον αριθμό των ενεργών σταθμών. Στην έναρξη κάθε κύκλου ψηφοφορίας, κάθε ενεργός κινητός σταθμός δηλώνει την ύπαρξή του στο σταθμό-βάση μέσω της μετάδοσης ενός σύντομου παλμού. Ο σταθμός-βάση χρησιμοποιεί το συνολικό λαμβανόμενο παλμό με σκοπό να αποκτήσει μια εκτίμηση του αριθμού των ενεργών σταθμών. Στη συνέχεια προγραμματίζει το στάδιο ανταγωνισμού έτσι ώστε να αποτελείται από έναν επαρκή αριθμό τυχαίων διευθύνσεων Ρ σε μορφή χρονικών σχισμών, ώστε οι ενεργοί σταθμοί να μπορούν να ανταγωνιστούν για πρόσβαση στο μέσο με λίγες συγκρούσεις. Στη συνέχεια μεταδίδει ένα πακέτο READY το οποίο μεταφέρει τον αριθμό Ρ στους ενεργούς κινητούς σταθμούς. Κάθε ενεργός κινητός σταθμός υπολογίζει μια τυχαία διεύθυνση στο διάστημα [0..(Ρ - 1)] και μεταδίδει την τυχαία διεύθυνση του στην αντίστοιχη χρονική σχισμή. Κατόπιν, ο σταθμός- βάση χρησιμοποιεί τις λαμβανόμενες τυχαίες διευθύνσεις για να επιλέξει τη σειρά που θα αποδοθεί άδεια εκπομπής στους κινητούς σταθμούς. Τα αποτελέσματα προσομοίωσης που παρουσιάστηκαν αποκαλύπτουν την ανωτερότητα του TRAP έναντι του RAP σε μεσαίο και υψηλό φόρτο. Επιπλέον, η υλοποίηση του TRAP είναι πολύ πιο απλή από τις CDMA εκδόσεις του RAP, καθώς δε χρειάζεται επιπλέον υλικό για την ορθογώνια λήψη των τυχαίων διευθύνσεων. Η έρευνα που περιγράφεται στο Κεφάλαιο αυτό οδήγησε στις εργασίες [2, 6, 7], Το Κεφάλαιο 3 παρουσίασε το LEAP, ένα πρωτόκολλο MAC βασισμένο σε μανθάνοντα αυτόματα. Σύμφωνα με το προτεινόμενο πρωτόκολλο, ο κινητός σταθμός που έχει τη δικαιοδοσία να εκπέμψει επιλέγεται από το σταθμό-βάση με τη βοήθεια ενός μανθάνοντας αυτομάτου. Το μανθάνον αυτόματο χρησιμοποιεί την ανάδραση του δικτύου προκειμένου να ενημερωθεί η πιθανότητα…

▼ This thesis investigates both theoretical and practical aspects of the design and analysis of modern error-control coding schemes, namely low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and rateless codes for unequal error protection (UEP). It also studies the application of modern error-control codes in efficient data dissemination in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks. Two methodologies for the design and analysis of UEP-LDPC codes are proposed. For these proposed ensembles, density evolution formulas over the binary erasure channel are derived and used to optimize the degree distribution of the codes. Furthermore, for the first time, rateless codes that can provide UEP are developed. In addition to providing UEP, the proposed codes can be used in applications for which unequal recovery time is desirable, i.e., when more important parts of data are required to be recovered faster than less important parts. Asymptotic behavior of the UEP-rateless codes under the iterative decoding is investigated. In addition, the performance of the proposed codes is examined under the maximum-likelihood decoding, when the codes have short to moderate lengths. Results show that UEP-rateless codes are able to provide very low error rates for more important bits with only a subtle loss in the performance of less important bits. Moreover, it is shown that given a target bit error rate, different parts of the information symbols can be decoded after receiving different numbers of encoded symbols. This implies that information can be recovered in a progressive manner, which is of interest in many practical applications such as media-on-demand systems. This work also explores fundamental research problems related to applying error-control coding such as rateless coding to the problem of reliable and energy-efficient broadcasting in multihop wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. The proposed research touches on the four very large fields of wireless networking, coding theory, graph theory, and percolation theory. Based on the level of information that each node has about the network topology, several reliable and energy-efficient schemes are proposed, all of which are distributed and have low complexity of implementation. The first protocol does not require any information about the network topology. Another protocol, which is more energy efficient, assumes each node has local information about the network topology. In addition, this work proposes a distributed scheme for finding low-cost broadcast trees in wireless networks. This scheme takes into account various parameters such as distances between nodes and link losses. This protocol is then extended to find low-cost multicast trees.
