▼ Cyclopentanone is a promising building block in the conversion of biomass to fuels. It can be readily obtained from furanics derived from biomass and can be converted to intermediate products in the molecular weight range compatible with fuels via C-C bond forming reactions. Among them, aldol condensation is a promising route. Conventional MgO catalysts are intrinsically active to catalyze this reaction, but they usually exhibit low surface areas and low stability in the presence of liquid water. The nitrate-citrate combustion method results in high-surface-area oxides with high condensation activity, but they are still susceptible to water attack. Here, hydrophobic MgO-based catalysts functionalized with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) are shown to exhibit remarkable stability in the liquid phase under conditions in which a conventional MgO deactivates in short time.
A follow-up study investigates the effect of co-fed water on the MgO-catalyzed
cyclopentanone self-aldol condensation. As more water is added, the initial rate on hydrophilic MgO drops rapidly due to site blockage. Meanwhile, the initial rate on hydrophobic MgO-OTS increases in water vapor before decreasing in excess liquid water. It is noteworthy that under dry conditions, kinetic studies indicate a shift in the rate-limiting step: from first-order α-H abstraction on MgO to second-order C-C coupling on MgO-OTS. A proposal is that the high OTS loading limits the interaction between
cyclopentanone surface species and reduces the rate of C-C coupling. This step is, however, apparently favored by surface water clusters which bridge a liquid
cyclopentanone to an Mg2+ acid site. Such assistance allows the electrophile to undergo a distant polarization which can facilitate the subsequent nucleophilic attack.
Another important biomass upgrading process is the
cyclopentanone-acetone cross-aldol condensation, since the primary products – especially
cyclopentanone-activated compounds – can be hydrodeoxygenated into high octane-numbered hydrocarbons. Here, the reaction is catalyzed by high-surface-area MgO. Initial rates with various feed ratios, DFT calculations and adsorption measurements confirm both the preferential chemisorption and α-H abstraction of
cyclopentanone with respect to acetone. For each ketone reactant, α-H abstraction is rate-limiting, but subsequent C-C coupling equilibria along with the feed composition control the product distribution.

▼ The infrared, Raman and ultraviolet spectra of cyclopentanone, cyclopentanone -α,α,α',α'-d₄ and cyclopentanone-d₈ have been studied. The high resolution ultraviolet absorption spectra of the three isotopic species have been analysed in detail. The electronic transition has been identified as a single-singlet transition associated with ṉ→π* orbital electron promotion. The vibrational and rotational structures accompanying this electronic transition have been analysed and the results are in agreement with theoretical predictions. The geometry of the molecule in both ground and excited states has been calculated. In the excited state conformation, the oxygen atom is bent out of the plane of the three adjacent carbon atoms; there is a potential barrier of 705cm⁻¹ with respect to the oxygen out-of-plane bending vibration in the upper state.

susintetinti naujus antibakterinius ir priešgrybelinius
3-amino-2-tiokso-4-tiazolidinono darinius su pakaitais, esančiais 3
ir 5 padėtyse ir nustatyti N-3 padėtyje esančių pakaitų įtaką
junginių priešmikrobiniam aktyvumui. Tyrimo metodai – junginių
priešmikrobinis aktyvumas buvo prognozuojamas naudojant PASSonline
programą. Antimikrobinis aktyvumas buvo tiriamas in vitro būdu
dvigubo serijinio praskiedimo būdu, naudojant standų Miulerio –
Hintono agarą. Tyrimo rezultatai – Atlikus prognozes naudojant
PASSonline programą, gauti rezultatai nerodė didelio antibakterinio
ar priešgrybelinio aktyvumo. Atlikus tyrimus in vitro, pastebėta,
jog aktyviausi junginiai N-3 padėtyje turi alifatinius ciklinius
ketonus LRT-1; LRT-21 ar C-5 nitrofuraldehido radikalą LRT-3;
LRT-23. Įvedus kitus elektronų donorinius pakaitus į penktą padėtį,
kai N-3 blokuota, aktyvumas labai sumažėjo. Aktyviausi junginiai
savo sudėtyje turi N-3 blokuotą padėtį alifatiniais cikliniais
ketonais ir C-5 įvestą nitrofuraldehidą – LRT-3 ir LRT-23. Didelis
aktyvumas yra prieš S.aureus, B.subtilis, K.pneumoniae, B.cereus,

3-amino-2-thioxo-4-thiazolidinone derivatives with cyclohexanone
and cyclopentanone substitutes and evaluation of antimicrobial

Research – to synthesise new 3-amino-2-thioxo-4-thiazolidinone
derivatives and evaluate impact of aliphatic cyclic ketone
substitutes at N-3 position for antimicrobial activity. Methods –
Activity prognosis of new compounds was evaluated using PASSonline
program. Antimicrobial activity was testes in vitro, using double
serial diliuotn method using Miuler-Hinton agar. Results. Prognosis
with PASSonline showed weak activity againt bacteria and fungi. The
results of tests in vitro showed that compound LRT-1 and LRT-12
with aliphatic cyclic ketones at N – 3 position characterized
medium activity and compounds with 5-nitrofuraldehyde radical at
C-5 position (with N-3 position blocked) LRT-3 and LRT-23 showed
high activity against S.aureus, B.subtilis, K.pneumoniae, B.cereus,
E.faecalis, C.albicans (MSK 1,5625 – 6,25 μg/ml). Other electrone
donating substutes at C-5 position (with N-3 blocked) show very
weak activity. Conclusions – tests in vitro showed that the most
active compounds: LRT-3 and LRT-23 had 5-nitrofuraldehyde fragment

OUR EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS COVERED THE ONE PHOTON ABSORPTION SPECTRA IN THE GAS PHASE AND IN THE WAVELENGTH RANGE FROM 2100 TO 1400A. THE STRUCTURE OF THIS SPECTRA WAS ANALYSED. THIS STRUCTURE IS DUE TO RYDBERG TRANSITIONS. THE ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT IN ABSOLUTE VALUES, THE OSCILLATOR STRENGTH FOR ALL THE MOLECULAR TRANSITIONS AND THE FIRST IONIZATION POTENTIAL OF THE MOLECULES WERE CALCULATED. MEASUREMENTS WERE ALSO TAKEN IN THE REGION OF THE TRANSITIONS TO THE 3P RYDBERG STATES (1850-1750A) BY RESONANCE MULTIPHOTON IONIZATION SPECTROSCOPY (REMPΙ) IN AN IONIZATION CHAMBER AND IN A SUPERSONIC MOLECULAR BEAM. FOR ALL THE MOLECULES STUDIED A VIBRATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE 3S, 3P AND 3D RYDBERG STATES WAS PERFORMED. THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE REMPΙ SPECTRAWAS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN THE DETECTION OF THREE DIFFERENT 3P RYDBERG STATES. WE SAW IN THE REMPΙ SPECTRA OF CYCLOHEXANONE ITS METHYL-DERIVATIVES AND OF CYCLOHEPTANONE THAT THE 3P2 RYDBERG STATES, WAS ABSENT, AND A POSSIBLE EXPLANATION FOR THIS IS GIVEN. IN THIS MOLECULES WE CONFIRMED PHOTODISSOCIATION AND ACETALDEHYDE PRODUCTION. FINALLY WE EXAMINED THE BROADENING OF THE RYDBERGSTRUCTURE UPON METHYLATION.
