The number of road accidents is increasing all over the world. When Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) are involved in an accident, they are prone to more serious injuries. Half of the fatalities around the world involve VRUs. One way of mitigating the severity and the number of VRU accidents is the introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionalities. Such systems must be validated before being introduced on the market. Real-life tests for validating the system would imply driving around for millions of operational hours which would be very time consuming and therefore expensive. For this purpose, TNO has developed a scenario generation method and is currently extending it. The objective of this study was to develop a vehicle-cyclist interaction model which would then be used along the existing scenario generation method or for validating generated scenarios. The preceding literature study to this Master Thesis, from which the architecture of the models was developed and potential input parameters were defined, was used as a starting point. Based on the architecture, the interaction model was first developed with the help of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM). First, a sensitivity analysis was performed from which it was concluded that speed, acceleration, and steering angle are important parameters for a cyclist, whereas speed acceleration and yaw rate are important for a vehicle’s intent recognition. Furthermore, this analysis also indicated that distance to the center of the crossing is a very good interaction parameter. After selection of the parameters, the model was trained and cross-validated using data earlier recorded at TNO. The cross-validation results of the interaction model showed that the intent recognition is more constant for the whole observation sequence and an improved performance is seen for a prediction time of more than 2s compared to a HMM without interaction parameters. From this study, the kinematic input parameters for the cyclist and the vehicle, as well as the interaction parameters, were defined that need to be included in the vehicle-cyclist interaction model. However, the model developed in this study needs to be further validated using naturalistic vehicle-cyclist kinematic data, and for all type of vehicle-cyclist scenarios.

In order to adequately design for and promote safe and regular use of the bicycle as a form of active transportation, researchers and policy-makers alike would benefit from the input of practiced bicyclists. These lay experts possess unique experiential knowledge of local routes, gaps in the network and the degree of comfort afforded by different types of infrastructure. Furthermore, these individuals are adept at commenting on subjectively valuable aspects of bicycling, which may assist in informing promotion and marketing of this activity. This research draws on the knowledge of lay experts who regularly bicycle in Hamilton, Ontario. The objectives of this research were to identify and understand the challenges associated with bicycling in Hamilton, and to explore the subjective identities of Hamilton’s cyclists. A thematic analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews was conducted and the following themes were identified and explored: an array of physical, structural and social deterrents to bicycling exist in Hamilton; and the identities of Hamilton’s cyclists are complex, locally rooted and multidimensional in nature. Using a critical lens, with the help of the Social Ecological Model of Health and Identity Theory, this study draws the following conclusions: cyclists are well-equipped to critically evaluate the urban spaces through which they travel; cyclists may play an important role in encouraging non-users to take up bicycling; and cyclists and auto drivers may benefit from collaborating over mutually beneficial goals. Furthermore, while many individuals who ride bicycles do identify themselves as “cyclists” this terminology can be contentious and the identity is heavily rooted in cyclists’ local context. Although this identity is primarily experienced individually, a sense of community does exist; and the identity often spans beyond the simple action of riding a bicycle.

▼ With regard to climate change and air pollution within cities, interest in sustainable modes of transportation for regular use has taken a rise. Utilitarian cycling is being seen as a frontrunner for replacing everyday motorized travels within and between cities, supported by the rapid emergence of the electric bicycle. Governments are trying to use the increasing opportunities involving bicycle transportation to reduce car traffic and the related air polution, by stimulating the use of bicycles. In this light, interest is drawn to cyclist travel behavior to uncover preferences of cyclists. Existing literature shows a significant impact of weather conditions on cyclist travel behavior in terms of tranportation mode choices. Especially adverse weather condtions leave their mark on the use of bicycles as a means of transportation, as it is recognized by many studies as a main deterrent for cycling. On the other hand, the relation between weather conditions and cyclist route choice is an underexplored topic in existing literature. Consequently, it has remained unclear to what extent cyclists attempt to mitigate the influence of weather condtions through choice of route, and based on which determinants. Insights in ways to mitigate unchangeable external circumstances like weather conditions could be another step forward in stimulating utilitarian use of bicycles in the search for transportation modes that can replace motorized trips. This thesis made an attempt to partially address the research gap in existing literature, by departing from findings in the field of pedestrian mobility. In these studies, pedestrians have been found to adapt their choice of route to the degree of shelter that is offered by the built environment as a measure to change level of weather exposure. These findings were projected on cyclist route choice, to evaluate to what extent cyclist alter their choice of route based on weather conditions and the degree of shelter that can be found within a built environment. An elaborate methodology was proposed in which observed routes throughout the study area of Tilburg (the Netherlands), comprising trips made with conventional and electric bicycles, were compared with shortest and fastest alternatives. The weather conditions under which a route was conducted were modelled through a set of individual meteorological factors, spatially related to the location of an observed route. To operationalize the degree of shelter provided by the built environment, a new method was developed using aspects from existing theories on street climate design and spatial openness in order to provide a detailed description of the potential shelter along a route. Three different shelter factors were established, describing the degree of mean building shelter, maximum building shelter, and vegetational shelter in the form of tree density along a route. ▼ The focus of this dissertation is on safety improvement at intersections and presenting how Vehicle/Bicycle-to-Infrastructure Communications can be a potential countermeasure for crashes resulting from drivers' and cyclists' violations at intersections. The characteristics (e.g., acceleration capabilities, etc.) of transportation modes affect the violation behavior. Therefore, the first building block is to identify the users' transportation mode. Consequently, having the mode information, the second building block is to predict whether or not the user is going to violate. This step focuses on two different modes (i.e., driver violation prediction and cyclist violation prediction). Warnings can then be issued for users in potential danger to react or for the infrastructure and vehicles so they can take appropriate actions to avoid or mitigate crashes. A smartphone application was developed to collect sensor data used to conduct the transportation mode recognition task. Driver violation prediction task at signalized intersections was conducted using observational and simulator data. Also, a naturalistic cycling experiment was designed for cyclist violation prediction task. Subsequently, cyclist violation behavior was investigated at both signalized and stop-controlled intersections. To build the prediction models in all the aforementioned tasks, various Artificial Intelligence techniques were adopted. K-fold Cross-Validation as well as Out-of-Bag error was used for model selection and validation. Transportation mode recognition models contributed to high classification accuracies (e.g., up to 98%). Thus, data obtained from the smartphone sensors were found to provide important information to distinguish between transportation modes. Driver violation (i.e., red light running) prediction models were resulted in high accuracies (i.e., up to 99.9%). Time to intersection (TTI), distance to intersection (DTI), the required deceleration parameter (RDP), and velocity at the onset of a yellow light were among the most important factors in violation prediction. Based on logistic regression analysis, movement type and presence of other users were found as significant factors affecting the probability of red light violations by cyclists at signalized intersections. Also, presence of other road users and age were the significant factors affecting violations at stop-controlled intersections. In case of stop-controlled intersections, violation prediction models resulted in error rates of 0 to 10 percent depending on how far from the intersection the prediction task is conducted. Syfte: Ett ökat användande av cykeln ger ett minskat utsläpp från transportsektorn och skapar en mer levande stadsmiljö, dock ger en ökad mängd trafikanter även en ökad risk för konflikter och olyckor. Hastighetsskillnaden mellan fotgängare och cyklister är stora och med allt fler eldrivna fordon på gång- och cykelbanan blir denna hastighetsskillnad ännu större. Det är därför viktigt med ett fungerande gång- och cykelvägnät. Målet med denna studie är att bidra med förbättring av samspelet mellan cyklister och fotgängare genom att utreda orsaker till konflikter samt att undersöka hur större kommuner utformar gång- och cykelbanor. Metod: Observationer har genomförts vid korsningar på huvudcykelstråket i Jönköpings Kommun, konflikter och flöde har observerats. Data har även samlats in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med trafikingenjörer och trafikplanerare från fyra större kommuner. Insamlade data har strukturerats efter teman tagna ur det teoretiska ramverket, dessa teman är utformning, riktlinjer och VGU, separering eller samspel och konflikter. Resultat: Studien har visat att det saknas normer kring hur man beter sig på gång- och cykelbanan vilket påverkar trafikanternas attityd till trafikregler och medtrafikanter. Under de sammanlagt 10 observationstillfällena observerades 15st konflikter. Av dessa var 47% på grund av att minst en trafikant inblandad bröt mot trafikreglerna. Oftast inträffar konflikter mellan olika trafikslag, fotgängare och cyklister. Av de 15st konflikter som observerades var 80% mellan olika trafikslag. Studien visar inte något samband mellan inträffade konflikter och hur vida utformningen når upp till rekommendationer i GCM och VGU. Dock kan förbättringar göras, otydligheter i utformningen gör att trafikanter inte vet hur de ska placera sig och samspela med andra trafikanter på gång- och cykelbanan. För att utformningen ska respekteras är det viktigt att trafikanterna få det utrymme som krävs. Konsekvenser: Gång- och cykelbanorna måste göras tydliga och sammanhängande för att de ska användas rätt och respekteras. Fotgängare och cyklister bör ses som två olika trafikslag och ytorna dem färdas på bör utformas efter det. Ett förbättringsförslag är att skapa en standard vid utformning av gång- och cykelbanor som är anpassad för tätorten. Begränsningar: Arbetet är begränsat till större kommuner och observationerna är genomförda i korsningar på endast en kommuns huvudcykelvägnät. Flera intervjuer och observationer i kommuner av olika storlek hade behövt genomföras för att göra arbetet generellt applicerbart.

Los urbanistas están en constante búsqueda de metodologías técnicas que proporcionan apoyo a las decisiones en torno a la infraestructura de la bicicleta y cambia la actitud de ver a la bicicleta como una "actividad recreativa" para un modo primario de transporte. Sin embargo, los modelos de transporte de cuatro pasos (generalización, distribución, modo de división, y la asignación de red) se han diseñado para el transporte motorizado y proporcionar una aplicabilidad limitada para andar en bicicleta. Ciclista son diferentes a las de vehículos como principal preocupación de los usuarios no es la congestión vial causada por los automóviles sino también otros factores de conducción como la seguridad vial y la comodidad. En este trabajo se presenta una metodología que combina los sistemas de información geográfica y modelos de elección discreta para incorporar la bicicleta en la cuarta etapa del modelo de transporte. Extensos estudios de base geográfica de las rutas se utilizaron para construir un modelo estadístico que tenga en cuenta las características demográficas y de infraestructuras ciclistas ambos jinetes. Los resultados del estudio de caso en Bogotá sugieren que esta metodología se abre una oportunidad para considerar la bicicleta como modo de transporte principal, al permitir a los planificadores a asignar excursiones en bicicleta a una red de transporte urbano de todo, algo no logrado antes. Sin embargo, la determinación de los parámetros de la metodología desarrollada es altamente dependiente de la ciudad de estudio y estos parecía no ser transferibles sin trabajo de campo adecuada. In an ideal world there would be no crashes in traffic. Unfortunately the real world is far from ideal and over 20,000 people get injured in a crash in the Netherlands each year. Around 46,7% of these registered crashes, take place at intersections. To decrease the chance and number of conflicts, and therefore the chance of crashes, many intersections are controlled by traffic signal control, but these will only have effect when the signals are obeyed. In almost all traffic signal control systems the motorised streams are prioritised, because of the space and time needed for cars to cross the intersection. Therefore cyclists, who can cross in high numbers in a short time, have longer waiting times compared to motorized streams. As a result cyclists are possibly more likely to ignore the traffic lights and cross when seems safe to them. When they cross during the phase where the light is turned red, this is called red light running. The purpose of the report is to give insight in the percentage of the red light running by cyclists in the Netherlands, the influence factors and the consequences for traffic safety. Through literature review an inventory of the different factors that influence red light running is made. The characteristics found that increased the percentage of red light running were: Male cyclists, young adults, experienced cyclists, bad weather, long waiting times, reduced credibility/low conflicting traffic flow, short crossing distance, herding (when there are other people violating the red light they are more likely to also violate the red light) and a low percentage of trucks and busses. Though most literature was over 25 years old and thus was not recent enough to form hypotheses. Thus the study got a descriptive and explanatory nature. With the help of video observations on 5 different intersections, factors found in literature were analysed. The overall red light running was 27.4%. Factors that were found influencing red light running are: - Gender: Men violated the red light 1.32 times more than women. - Age: Young cyclist have a higher percentage of red light running, 1.63 times higher than adults and 1.78 time higher than elderly cyclists. - Crossing distance: A longer crossing distance decreases the red light running - Flow of the motorized streams: more traffic on the conflicting motorized streams lead to less red light running. The vehicle composition of the conflicting stream seems to have an effect on the red light running. However, the number of observations for these factors was too low to statistically test them. Therefore further research, with observation of more intersections, is necessary. The other factors did not have an effect or the effect seen was not statistically significant. It is recommended to do further research on the factors that have an influence on the red light running. The number of the observations, number of intersections or number of cyclists crossing in this descriptive research are too low to conclude without a doubt the effect of these factors.

▼ In transportation safety studies, it is often necessary to account for unobserved heterogeneity and multimodality in data. The commonly used standard generalized linear models (e.g., Poisson-gamma models) do not fully address unobserved heterogeneity, assuming unimodal exponential families of distributions. This thesis illustrates how restrictive assumptions (e.g., unimodality) common to most road safety studies can be relaxed employing Bayesian nonparametric Dirichlet process mixture models. We use a truncated Dirichlet process, so that our models reduce to the form of finite mixture (latent class) models, which can be estimated employing standard Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, emphasizing computational simplicity. Interestingly, our approach estimates the number of latent subpopulations as part of its analysis algorithm using an elegant mathematical framework. We use pseudo Bayes factors for model selection, showing how the predictive capability of models can be affected by different assumptions. In univariate settings, we extend standard generalized linear models to a Dirichlet process mixture generalized linear model in which the random intercepts density is modeled nonparametrically, thereby adding flexibility to the model. We examine the performance of the proposed approach using both simulated and real data. We also examine the performance of the proposed model in terms of replicating datasets with high proportions of zero crashes. In terms of engineering insights, we provide a policy example related to the identification of high-crash locations, a critical component of the transportation safety management process. With respect to multilevel settings, this thesis introduces a flexible latent class multilevel model for analyzing crash data that are of hierarchical nature. We extend the standard multilevel model by accounting for unobserved cross-group heterogeneity through multimodal intercepts (group effects). The proposed method allows identifying latent subpopulations (and consequently outliers) at the highest level of the hierarchy (e.g., geographic areas). We evaluate our method on two recent railway grade crossing crash datasets from Canada. This research confirms the need for a multilevel approach for both datasets due to the presence of spatial dependencies among crossings nested within the same region. We provide a novel approach to benchmark different regions based on their safety performance measures. To this end, we identify latent clusters among different regions that share similar unidentified features, stimulating further investigations to explore reasons behind such similarities and dissimilarities. This could have important policy implications for various safety management programs. This thesis also investigates inference for multivariate crash data by introducing two flexible Bayesian multivariate models: a multivariate mixture of points and a mixture of multivariate normal densities. ▼ This thesis is a study of the “underground” cycling community in Ogden, Utah. Countercultural cycling micro-communities exist across the United States, if not the world, but have not yet been thoroughly studied by folklorists. This research establishes a foundational understanding of the nature of underground cycling culture, particularly in relation to identity. Using folkloric definitions of identity and subculture as my foundation, I examine four different facets of cyclist activities: folk art, folk events, narratives, and the community’s use of space. These four facets provide a variety of lenses through with to examine actualized, expressive cyclist behavior. Each facet also illustrates the different levels (personal, community, and global) at which identity is performed. The most personal performances of cyclist identity are through the folk art of modified bicycles. Modifications tend to reflect the personality of the cyclist, and consequently a bicycle comes to hold much symbolism for the cyclist. The communitylevel studies consisted of examining group events where I observed how the group interacted with itself. The performance and participation in activities are what constitutes an actual cycling community, rather than a series of individual cyclists. The examination of narratives moves outward to contextualize the cycling microcommunity within the larger Ogden community. This chapter explores the role of conflict, illustrates how cyclists think of themselves, and illustrates how cyclists define themselves in opposition to motorists. The community spaces examination looks at the use of physical space versus digital space. These spaces illustrate how the community behaves amongst itself versus how the community behaves amongst the larger, online, Utah cycling community. The physical space reflected the creativity and utilitarian needs of the group. The restrictive digital spaces manage to be expressive through images and language. Internal group conflict occurs more often online, however, due to infractions of implicit group etiquette, possibly as a symptom of a less personal form of interaction. The marginalized, cyclist identity seemed to hold the greatest rewards at the more intimate, personal levels. V magistrskem delu je analiziranih več predlogov ureditve površin za pešce in kolesarje na županijski cesti znotraj naselja.Cesta je infrastrukturni objekt, ki prebivalcem omogoča gibanje oz. mobilnost v prostoru. Pri načrtovanju površin za pešce in kolesarje je treba upoštevati, da sta pešec in kolesar najbolj nezaščitena in najpogostejša udeleženca v prometu, zato tudi sodita med najbolj ogrožene udeležence cestnega prometa. Na začetku je opisana kategorizacija cest v Sloveniji in na Hrvaškem. Potem sledi poglavje, v katerem so predstavljeni kriteriji za načrtovanje površin za pešce in kolesarje (površine za pešce in kolesarje, prosti in prometni profili, projektno-tehnični elementi). Predstavljene so tudi osnovne zahteve za zgornji ustroj kolesarskih površin in površin za pešce ter materiali, iz katerih so lahko zgrajene. V nadaljevanju je opisana prometna signalizacija (vrste signalizacije in označbe, ukrepi in naprave za umirjanje prometa v naseljih in razsvetljava). V zadnjem poglavju so predstavljena teoretična izhodišča, prikazana ob konkretnem primeru predloga ureditve površin za pešce in kolesarje, ki je izdelan v treh variantah, te pa so med primerjane. Ob tem so ugotovljene prednosti in slabosti posamezne variante in na podlagi tega je opravljena izbira optimalne variante.

In this master thesis more proposals of surface restructuring for hikers and cyclist have been analysed. The road is an infrastructure construction that allows movement to population, i.e.. mobility in area. When planning surfaces for hikers and cyclists, it has to be considered that the hiker and a cyclist are the most unprotected and yet most frequent, therefore, most vulnerable road users. At the beginning, categorisation of roads in Slowenia and Croatia has been described. The chapter that follows describes criteria for projecting the surfaces for hikers and cyclists (surfaces for hikers, free and road profiles, project and technical elements). Also, an essential requirements of upper structure for cycling and hiking surfaces, as the materials of which they are made of, have been represented. Furthermore, the road signalling (types of signalling and labels, measures and devices for soothing traffic in settlement and lighting) has been described. In the last chapter, theoreticall sources apllied on concrete example of surface restructuring for hikers and cyclist, have been represented. Three variants of surface restructuring have been made, also a comparison of variants with advantages and deficiencies of every variant, as well as the optimal variant choice, has been made.

▼ Many breakthroughs have been witnessed in the computer vision community in recent years, largely due to deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and largescale datasets. This thesis aims to investigate dynamic scene understanding from images. The problem of dynamic scene understanding involves simultaneously solving several sub-tasks including object detection, object recognition, and segmentation. Successfully completing these tasks will enable us to interpret the objects of interest within a scene. Vision-based traffic monitoring is one of many fast-emerging areas in the intelligent transportation system (ITS). In the thesis, we focus on the following problems in traffic scene understanding. They are 1) How to detect and recognize all the objects of interest in street view images? 2) How to employ CNN features and semantic pixel labelling to boost the performance of pedestrian detection? 3) How to enhance the discriminative power of CNN representations for improving the performance of fine-grained car recognition? 4) How to learn an adaptive color space to represent vehicle images for vehicle color recognition? For the first task, we propose a single learning based detection framework to detect three important classes of objects (traffic signs, cars, and cyclists). The proposed framework consists of a dense feature extractor and detectors of these three classes. The advantage of using one common framework is that the detection speed is much faster, since all dense features need only to be evaluated once and then are shared with all detectors. The proposed framework introduces spatially pooled features as a part of aggregated channel features to enhance the robustness to noises and image deformations. We also propose an object subcategorization scheme as a means of capturing the intra-class variation of objects. To address the second problem, we show that by re-using the convolutional feature maps (CFMs) of a deep CNN model as visual features to train an ensemble of boosted decision forests, we are able to remarkably improve the performance of pedestrian detection without using specially designed learning algorithms. We also show that semantic pixel labelling can be simply combined with a pedestrian detector to further boost the detection performance. Fine-grained details of objects usually contain very discriminative information which are crucial for fine-grained object recognition. Conventional pooling strategies (e.g. max-pooling, average-pooling) may discard these fine-grained details and hurt the iii iv recognition performance. To remedy this problem, we propose a spatially weighted pooling (swp) strategy which considerably improves the discriminative power of CNN representations. The swp pools the CNN features with the guidance of its learnt masks, which measures the importance of the spatial units in terms of discriminative power. In image color recognition, visual features are extracted from image pixels represented in one color space.
