1. Tay, Noel Nuo Wi. Human-centric Semantic Reasoning and Optimization for Smart Home : スマートホームのための人間中心セマンティック推論と最適化.

Degree: 博士(工学), 2017, Tokyo Metropolitan University / 首都大学東京

首都大学東京, 2017-03-25, 博士(工学)

Subjects/Keywords: Smart home consists of various kinds of Internet of Tings (IoT) devices connected to the private house that cooperatively provide inhabitants (users) with proactive services related to comfort; security and safety. Examples of services include 1) manipulation of lighting and temperature based on time and context; 2) reminder service of user’s schedules by using the nearest output device; and 3) device organization to realize surveillance system. However; current smart homes are developed mostly from the viewpoint of technical capabilities; where users have to decide how the connected devices are going to serve them. They may have to setup the devices based on the available functionalities and specifications of the devices; and also have to alter their living styles according to the role of each device. Besides; most devices can only provide simple services independently. Œus; cooperation among the devices is important. On the other hand; human-centric approach; which centered on humans’ need to enhance their living experience; is an important technological paradigm where services are provided anywhere and anytime based on situation. Smart home abiding this approach should cooperatively maximize fulfillment of quality of life (QOL) for individual users subject to personal constraints. In this respect; the devices are bound to enable communication of information; and their operations are coordinated to deliver services cooperatively via a sequence of device actions called a plan. Due to personalization and automation; a number of problems have to be solved. First; a means of automatic binding between loosely coupled devices depending on services delivered have to be devised; as manual setup is impractical. Secondly; coordination of devices needs to generate complex plans; without requiring manual specification of sub-plans. Besides; issue of over-constrained goals during service provisions that arises from flawed or contradicting specification from multiple users should be considered. Apart from that; low training data in general environment setting for individual identification should be addressed. The aim of this research is to establish an integrated system for the human-centric smart home (HcSH) that provides personalized service through loosely coupled devices automatically. This research modularizes the overall system into three modules; which are human identification (HIM); automated planner (APM); and semantic reasoner (SRM). HIM helps select the appropriate QOL; SRM binds the devices by associating them with planning components; which are then used by APM to generate plans for device coordination to maximize QOL fulfillment. Chapter 1 gives the introduction and design motivation. Chapter 2 presents the related works and literature reviews; as well as justifications relevant to this thesis. Chapter 3 deals with HIM; which is realized via face identification. For face identification; problems faced are heavy computational load and insufficient learning data. The solution is to use transfer learning to handle data issue while being able to build generalized face model. For face model refinement; active learning is implemented. Experimental results show the method is competitive in terms of accuracy and computational cost compared to current state of the art. Chapter 4 presents APM; where planning via solving Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is laid out. CSP in planning is declarative without requiring prior specification of sub-plans; and can handle variables of larger domains. Due to the high possibility of having over-constrained QOL as in practical cases; CSP planner cannot fulfill all of them. An example is a contradicting TV channel request from 2 persons. Optimization through weighted CSP is therefore used to maximize QOL fulfillment. Experiments on weighted CSP shows that the method is capable of performing optimization while generating complex plans. Chapter 5 is on SRM; where knowledge representation is constructed by Web Ontology Language (OWL) description logic. It models knowledge on home and building layout and device functionalities. OWL is used because it is decidable and that it is endorsed by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We deal with case studies based on further inference on building state as an important example to discuss the applicability of the proposed method; and demonstrate the use of building ontology. This is followed by automated device binding and the method to generate basic planning components of rules in automated planning. Finally; an extension to robot complex planning is provided to demonstrate how it can be easily extended. Chapter 6 demonstrates the applicability of the HcSH; which integrates all three modules through its implementation in a prototype smart home with 5 rooms; which houses 2 persons. Various tests are performed to show the generated plans are near optimal without redundancy. Œe system is also shown to be scalable given increasing amount of devices. Case studies show that the system can perform well even under short time threshold. Finally; chapter 7 summarizes the thesis. Future vision of the work is also laid out; which is to implement it as a community-centric system.

Subjects/Keywords: The subject of this thesis is the development of an e-business model based on flexible participation of households in the Serbian energy market. The goal is the development of a sustainable and suitable e-business model that enables households as well as individual devices to participate in the balancing market as well as the energy exchange through the use of smart grid concepts and demand response technologies. By enabling the participation of individual households in the balancing market; a new mechanism for frequency control of energy grids is possible; which allows for the future adoption of renewables. Energy markets are traditionally B2B e-business models; which facilitate for business processes between the energy producers and the system operators. With the deregulation of energy markets; new ways of doing business are becoming possible; primarily for households for whom the participation in the market allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in the balancing mechanism and the potential to improve the stability of the energy grid as a whole. The business model proposed in this dissertation is based on the business rules as well as regulations that are currently in place in the Republic of Serbia. The implementation of the technical segment of the model is based on the design of a distributed infrastructure for the coordination of a large number of individual users and devices with the goal of providing demand response services to the energy market. Business intelligence tools; as well as analytical models; will be used for the purpose of data extraction and analysis as well as to manage the system in real time. The advantage of the proposed model is in the fact that it is adapted for energy markets that are still in development; as well as its capability to adapt to new technological trends and its integration with smart grid technologies. The dissertation gives the analysis of readiness of customers and market participants for the application of the propsed model.

Käibekohustused on inimeste kooseksisteerimise ohutuse tagamiseks kohtupraktika kaudu loodud käitumisreeglid. Erinevaid mõiste määratlusi summeerides võib öelda, et käibekohustus tähendab deliktiõiguses arusaamist, et isikul, kes loob… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: võlaõigus; õigusrikkumised; vastutus; õigusloome; Eesti; law of obligations; violations of law; liability; legislation; Estonia; One expression of defining objective standard of care is the concept of duty to maintain safety, which is based on a legally binding obligation, in the form of a general clause that affects everyone, to conduct himself or herself in a way so as to not harm the legal rights of others, as protected by law, more than necessary and acceptable in the shared life of people. By summarising different definitions, the duty to maintain safety in tort law means the understanding that the person, who creates a danger or controls a dangerous situation and allows the danger to persist, is required to employ all reasonably necessary and appropriate measures in order to protect other persons and their rights against the realisation of danger. As regards the attempts to avoid risks the general assumptions, which apply irrespective of the specific facts of an individual case, three key criteria are especially relevant: the degree of severity of potential damage, likelihood of damage, and the resources needed to prevent or remove the risk. Although liability based on violations of the duties to maintain safety is an organic part of Estonian tort law, it is still quite vague and hidden due to scarcity of case law. It would therefore be worth considering of setting out legal provisions so as to better perceive the possibility of liability based on such a duties. Bunching together general citeria that compose the objective standard of conduct would help to provide such a ground and relevant regulation contained in Articles 4:102 and 4:103 of the PETL may serve as an example. In addition to the clarification of an objective standard of conduct, the current legal provisions constructing the bases of liability based on the general composition of delict should also be specified from the same perspective. Unlike the methodological teaching modelled in the BGB, in solving cases based on violation of the duty to maintain safety by Estonian law, a presumption of the violation the duty must be applied to keep in accordance with the general rule provided in §1050 (1) of the LOA. The main advantages of this approach are that the burden of proving a negative fact is removed from the injured party and the burden is placed on the party to the procedure in whose internal sphere the facts needing proof are found; simplicity of the court procedure; more reliable evidence; and preventive impact on the violation of the duties to maintain safety.

Subjects/Keywords: Companies that have years of experience in business process management often maintain repositories containing hundreds or even thousands of business process models. The models in these repositories usually originate from various sources and are developed by different stakeholders. A common practice is that new process models are created by extending or refining existing models, or by copying and merging fragments from multiple models. As a result, process models tend to accumulate duplicate fragments which, if left unconsolidated, may evolve independently and lead to inconsistencies. Also, it often occurs that organizations manage multiple business processes that have similar goals, but pertain to different customer types, different products, business units or geographical regions. For example, a business process for handling insurance claims for motor accidents shares the same goal as a business process for handling house insurance claims. Naturally, these models will share several common fragments, but will differ from one another at various points. Managing these processes as entirely separate entities, leads to redundancy and inefficiency. In this setting, this thesis addresses the following question: How to identify duplicate fragments in process model repositories, and more generally, how to identify and consolidate commonalities across models in a large process model repository? The thesis proposes two complementary methods for process model consolidation, namely process model merging and subprocess extraction. Process model merging takes as input two or more process models and produces a single consolidated model that analysts can use to manage entire families of similar process models rather than managing them independently. On the other hand, subprocess extraction is about identifying fragments that are shared by multiple process models (also known as clones) and encapsulating these clones as separate subprocesses in order to eliminate redundancies.; business processes; models; software development; äriprotsessid; mudelid; tarkvaraarendus

Subjects/Keywords: snižování hluku; hluk v kolejové dopravě; řízení aplikace produktů pro úpravu adheze; Management of adhesion in wheel-rail contact in railway transport could be more effective; if noise is taken into account. Device; which enables that; is not available on the market. Therefore the aim of the thesis is to design the module for control of the unit for application of products for modification of adhesion in dependence on noise emission from passing-through vehicle. Experimental analysis of noise of railway vehicles in Brno is a part of the thesis. Based on the outcomes of the analysis; technical parameters of module and parameters for control of application are defined. Final solution is based on open-source platform Arduino and it is verified experimentally. Outcomes of this experiments confirmed; that application of products for modification of adhesion managed on dependence on noise is possible and it seems to be effective for reducing noise emission caused by railway vehicles.

Društvene nauke / Ustavno pravo Social sciences / constitutional law

Сматрамо да се основано може поставити питање: да ли је парламент још увек носилац законодавне… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: The following question can be raised: Are parliaments still the true bearers of the legislative power; or paraphrasing Hobbes: it is assumed who the legislator is; but is it also known? The subject of this thesis are the limits that parliaments are facing today while exercising their normative roles. These limitations are both internal and external; and may be traditional or of new origin. Today efficiency and speed are key expectations; it seems that parliaments as legislators are losing their breath and are facing many limitations in their role that has for centuries been their ”basic one”: their legislative role. The fact that the focus of power is increasingly shifting towards the executive branch of power even in countries with parliamentary systems of governance is not a novelty anymore. Parliaments; however; do not only face the limits placed before them by the governments throughout the legislative process. The key role of political parties; the relativization of the classical concept of sovereignty; and other limiting factors of the legislative role of parliaments; which need further examination; may lead to the modification of their functions in modern states. The aim of the dissertation is to through thoroughly selected scientific sources and relying on a decade-long experience as Member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia precisely determine and rationally examine and draft an academic position about the role of parliaments today with regard to the limitations in their legislative function. We started off from the hypothesis that the legislative function of parliaments is set by the constitution; and narrowed by the ever increasing role of the governments in the legislative process; by political parties and other participants in the legislative procedure; as well as by the relativization of national sovereignty in the framework of international integration and also by the impact of global economic flows.

La presente tesis doctoral se ha centrado en el reto de conseguir, mediante Fabricación Aditiva (FA), modelos para ensayo quirúrgico, bajo la premisa que los… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: This doctoral thesis has been focused on the challenge to obtain, using Additive Manufacturing (AM), models for surgical planning, under the premise that the equipment to obtain them should be accessible to the hospital field. The objective is to spread the use of prototypes as a surgical training tool, upgrading medical practice in the same way that technologies which enhanced radiographs at the time. The reason for using AM, instead of more traditional technologies, is its capacity to materialise, in a straight way, the digital data of the patient anatomy coming from three-dimensional scanning systems, making it possible to achieve personalised models. The results are basically the generation of new knowledge in order to create accessible multi-material 3D printing machines that would allow to obtain models mimicking living tissues. Related to the will to spread this technology, research has focused on open source technologies, mainly Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF), and similar technologies based on catalitzable liquids. This research is aligned with the development work related to AM at CIM UPC, and in this special field there is a close cooperation with Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona (HSJD). The first section of the thesis includes a description of the state of the art, including the existing technologies and their application within the medical field. For the first time, basis have been laid for the characterisation of living tissues – primarily soft tissues – to support the selection of materials mimicking them in an AM process, so as to improve the surgical planning experience. The stiffness linked to most of the materials commonly used in 3D printing, makes them unhelpful to simulate tumours and other anatomic references. Then, parameters like density, viscoelasticity, soft materials industry characterisation, soft tissues and vessels elastic modulus, its hardness, mimicking blood and sterilisation requirements, are successively treated. The second section starts exploring FFF 3D printing. Processes are classified from the point of view of multi-materiality, a key factor for surgical planning models, telling multi-nozzle solutions from mixing printheads solutions. A study about probable useful materials (both filaments and liquids) to mimic soft tissues is included. It is stated how liquids, compared to filaments, are more demanding related to additive manufacturing processes, and different ways to print very soft materials are detailed. Finally, six real cases – in which the doctorate has participated in these last years –, involving collaboration with HSJD, are reported. In the origin it can be found the difficulty to perform tumour resection surgeries to children, like neuroblastoma type, and the initiative of Dr. Lucas Krauel. Finally, Section 3 is devoted to the exploration of many concepts (up to 8), activity performed along the last five years thanks to the technical resources of CIM UPC and the academic activity of the UPC students, related to their final degree thesis, therefore reaching the construction of several machines and mechanisms to test them. The wide and systematic research about these concepts makes closer the day to reach a desktop 3D printing multimaterial solution. It is found that the best way to progress is having a plurality of independent printheads in order to enable a 3D printer to integrate some of the researched concepts, thus materialising a possible solution. To sum up, it is raised how a 3D printer for surgical training models should be like, for the purpose of serving as a basis for new developments.; Àrees temàtiques de la UPC::Enginyeria mecànica; 617; 620; 68

Treatment for dual diagnosis is best when the treatment of each disorder is integrated into one program. There are various forms of dual diagnosis treatment that were explored. Existing dual diagnosis treatment research will be presented. The purpose of the study is to evaluate an existing dual diagnosis and severe mental illness program that provides integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment. The research design is a pre-experimental one group pretest posttest design (Campbell & Stanley, 1963). Fifty-two people were studied to determine the program effectiveness. The effectiveness of the program was determined by analyzing the data collected on the consumers’ pretest and posttest measures. The measures used in the research were the BASIS-32, MAI, BHS, BDI, and CAR. Subjects in the study had a mean age of 30. There were 18 females and 34 males. Of the participants, 11.3% had schizophrenia, 13.2% had schizoaffective disorder, 7.5% had bipolar, 11.3% had depression, 5.7% had substance abuse, 43.4% had a dual diagnosis with mental illness and substance abuse, and 5.7% had schizotypal personality disorder. The average length of stay for the consumers was 4 months of treatment. All clients were prescribed medications at discharge with the exception of one client. The results of the study indicate that the BASIS-32 showed statistically significant improvement in results for subjects from pretest to posttest. All other inventories yielded changes that were not statistically significant. Treating dually diagnosed clients in an integrated treatment center is imperative to decrease duplication of services, mixed messages, and exacerbation of problems. In this study, the dual diagnosis program was seen to have some efficacy in treatment. Limitations of the study include a low N, which affects the power of the study to determine statistically significant changes in client inventory scores from pretest to posttest. Other limitations include no comparison group nor any control group. Despite the limitations, the study demonstrates that people improve while in dual diagnosis treatment, even those clients with a single diagnosis.","Kevin DeWeaver","Kevin DeWeaver; Patricia Reeves; Edwin Risler",PhD,Sociology,"Social Work",arnold_tara_g_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/arnold_tara_g_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Dual diagnosis; Treatment; SMI; Research; Substance Abuse; BASIS-32; MAI; BHS; CAR; BDI-II.",,"Evaluation of an innovative dual diagnosis program : Skyland Trail's Operation Prevention (STOP).",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Aten, Nancy Marie",2003-05,"Ecological landscape rehabilitation is explored in cities, especially the significance of scale, and the sense of place that is encouraged through the use of an indigenous vegetation model. The natural landscape and natural processes in cities have been modified beyond recognition, simplified, and obscured; however, the dependence of people on those processes and resources remains in a critical, tenuous, and not completely understood balance. In process-based ecological restoration, considerations of scale are related to ecosystem spatial characteristics and potential connectivity of restored patches. In cities, with unbuilt ground in very small fragments, the idea of a whole ecological landscape integrated with dense human population encourages consideration of larger scale rehabilitation. A process of ecological rehabilitation at a neighborhood scale is suggested, toward “success” in ecological and social terms, by considering case study neighborhoods in central city Milwaukee, their characteristics relevant to landscape rehabilitation, and oak savanna as a vegetation model.","Darrel Morrison","Darrel Morrison; Ian Firth; Kathleen Parker; Susan Mudd",MLA,"College of Environment and Design","Landscape Architecture",aten_nancy_m_200305_mla,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/aten_nancy_m_200305_mla,eng,uga,public,"Urban Ecology; Oak Savanna; Ecological Restoration; Landscape Scale; Milwaukee",,"City neighborhood and Oak Savanna",Thesis +,10724/20051,"Austin, Rebecca Lynne",2003-05,"Transnational environmentalism has traditionally been considered an environmentalism that emphasizes the conservation of "nature," not social justice and the empowerment of local peoples. On Palawan Island, Philippines, the linkages between meso-level environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and local fisherfolk are the primary foundation for social justice, food security, and the empowerment of local peoples through community-based coastal resources management (CBCRM). This suggests that these linkages are the basis for CBCRM, which focuses more on social justice, and less on scientific, technocratic, or preservationist approaches to resource management. Since the People Power movement and the new Philippine Constitution of 1987 the democratic space in the Philippines became especially conducive to communitybased resource management. My research is significant because it fills several gaps in the literature on environmentalism. First, the relationship between meso-level NGOs and local communities is rarely addressed in analyses of environmental movements, which are usually focused primarily on either transnational discourses or local case studies. Second, most contemporary environmental movements have focused more on the conservation of nature, and not on social justice and the empowerment of local peoples. Third, there is a dearth of literature on coastal environmentalism. Palawan in particular has received international attention for its high biological diversity and is host to a growing number of coastal environmental programs. Recently, environmentalism has begun to emphasize the conservation and regeneration of the world’s oceans and coastal zones. Utilizing tools and perspectives from cultural anthropology and other disciplines, this research analyzes the linkages between NGOs and local peoples. Unlike projections made by early critiques of NGOs, many Palawan environmental advocacy NGOs started as volunteer organizations, and with the infusion of donor funding have not “sold out” advocacy to become project mangers. On Palawan, hybrid NGOs have maintained advocacy positions and activities while taking on project management roles. The research suggests that fisherfolk become empowered through relationships with and information learned from NGOs along with government agencies, and will likely maintain those relationships for effective resource management as opposed to an ideal held by NGO environmentalists for autonomous self-determination.","J. The radial maze was placed in a featureless octagonal enclosure to minimize the availability of extramaze cues. Intramaze cues were provided at the distal end of each arm by placing a small object in front of the food trough; unique objects were randomly sampled from a large pool of objects. The use of extramaze and intramaze cues was assessed by rotating the objects, after the retention interval, on occasional non-rewarded probes, thereby dissociating the location of extramaze and intramaze cues. Most of the debate surrounding transcendental arguments has centered on their failure to accomplish what their advocates intend them to accomplish. They are typically called upon to settle decisively the philosophical difficulties they address by establishing necessary metaphysical claims through a consideration of the conditions of the possibility of epistemological premises. That is, transcendental arguments make a claim about reality, what is actually the case, based upon appearance, what is believed to be the case or how things seem. In Chapters One and Two, I will give an account of the chief characteristics and structure of transcendental arguments and provide several canonical exemplars, which will exhibit not only different manifestations that transcendental arguments can take but also the issues they have been used to address. The most common criticism of transcendental arguments is that they are not able to span the justificatory gap between appearance and reality or to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of moving from mind to world. In Chapter Three, I will consider criticisms of transcendental arguments, focusing on the most common criticism given by Barry Stroud. In light of Stroud’s trenchant criticism, recent work reveals an optimistic undertone by some philosophers who would promote a more moderate use of transcendental arguments. Rather than establish necessary claims about reality, transcendental arguments reveal necessary epistemological connections. I will argue that although these moderate versions are indeed legitimate as transcendental arguments, there is no need to discard the more ambitious version. Through the work of John McDowell, I will show how Stroud’s criticism can be overcome, thereby removing the incentive to endorse moderate versions as substitutes for ambitious versions and placing renewed confidence in transcendental argumentation. In Chapter Three, I will present and offer a critique of these moderate versions. In Chapters Four, Five, and Six, I will consider McDowell’s work in my defense of transcendental arguments against the criticisms previously noted.","O. Bradley Bassler","O. The study seeks to add to our understanding of the effect that internal organizational characteristics and external environmental factors can have on an organization’s choice to become involved in the policy process through the courts. The study uses a three-part analysis to understand the court-based advocacy of these groups, using three research questions for the study: (1) Over a period of ten years, what factors affect the choice of charitable nonprofit advocacy groups to participate in the courts? (2) What factors explain the annual frequency of the court-based advocacy of charitable nonprofit advocacy groups? (3) Of the charitable nonprofit advocacy groups that choose to participate in the courts, what factors affect the legal strategy choices they make on individual cases? To examine these questions, I collected court involvement data and organizational characteristic data on all charities in the United States that claimed to be involved in advocacy activities and whose annual income exceeded approximately three million dollars. The study finds that when considered from a cumulative perspective, over a period of ten years, internal organizational characteristics, including the presence of dues-paying members, are important in explaining the differences between charities that chose to advocate in court in the 1990s and those that did not. However, when considering court-based advocacy from an annual or case-level perspective, external environmental factors, including the regulatory and political environments, have a greater influence on charities.","Susan Haire; Scott Ainsworth","Susan Haire; Scott Ainsworth; Audrey Haynes; Jeff Brudney; Stefanie Lindquist; Hal Rainey",PhD,"Political Science","Political Science",basinger_nancy_w_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/basinger_nancy_w_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Nonprofit Advocacy; Interest Groups in Court; Charities and Public Policy",,"Charities in court : the advocacy efforts of charitable nonprofit organizations in the judicial venue - when? how? and how much?",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Bates, Benjamin Roswell",2003-05,"The Arab-Israeli conflict has long been presented as eternal and irresolvable. A rhetorical history argues that the standard narrative can be challenged by considering it a series of rhetorical problems. These rhetorical problems can be reconstructed by drawing on primary sources as well as publicly presented texts. A methodology for doing rhetorical history that draws on Michael Calvin McGee's fragmentation thesis is offered. Four theoretical concepts (the archive, institutional intent, peripheral text, and center text) are articulated. British Colonial Office archives, London Times coverage, and British Parliamentary debates are used to interpret four publicly presented rhetorical acts. In 1915-7, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration and the McMahon-Hussein correspondence. Although these documents are treated as promises in the standard narrative, they are ambiguous declarations. As ambiguous documents, these texts offer opportunities for constitutive readings as well as limiting interpretations. In 1922, the Mandate for Palestine was issued to correct this vagueness. Rather than treating the Mandate as a response to the debate between realist foreign policy and self-determination, Winston Churchill used epideictic rhetoric to foreclose a policy discussion in favor of a vote on Britain's honour. As such, the Mandate did not account for Wilsonian drives in the post-War international sphere. After Arab riots and boycotts highlighted this problem, a commission was appointed to investigate new policy approaches. In the White Paper of 1939, a rhetoric of investigation limited Britain's consideration of possible policies. By extending investigation to the limits of kairos, advocates of partition formulated policy without discussing other potential solutions. At the expiration of the White Paper, Britain withdrew from Palestine. As such, in 1947, the United Nations issued Resolution 181 to divide Palestine into two states. United Nations action was possible only because Britain articulated a rhetoric of failure and an end to Empire. None of these four policies was a panacea; each may have enhanced the problem of Palestine. In the conclusion, lessons from Britain's experience are applied to the current American approach to Palestine. Centering George W. Bush's Rose Garden Speech, and drawing on the Mitchell Commission Report and the Tenet Plan, indicates that consideration of ambiguity, epideictic rhetoric, rhetorics of investigation, and rhetorics of failure should be made when evaluating peace proposals.","Celeste Condit","Celeste Condit; Thomas Lessl; John Murphy; Kevin DeLuca; Loch Johnson",PhD,"Speech Communication","Speech Communication",bates_benjamin_r_200305_phd,http://purl.galileo.usg.edu/uga_etd/bates_benjamin_r_200305_phd,eng,uga,public,"Rhetorical history; Palestine; British Empire; Middle East; Late colonial period; Interwar decolonization",,"A rhetorical history of the British Consitution of Israel, 1917-1948",Dissertation +,10724/20051,"Baugher, Eric Brandon",2003-05,"Conventional historic preservation of military artifacts and sites is typically limited to presenting technological context and/or official military history. Based heavily on Astin’s theory of involvement (1984) and numerous national reports addressing educational excellence, this study examines students’ intensity of involvement and organization expectations as two variables influencing perceived learning in the co-curriculum. A total of 437 sophomores, juniors, and seniors completed an 87- item survey primarily using Likert scales to gather information in three areas: (a) the amount of physical and psychological energy exerted by students on the organization, (b) students’ perceptions of skills and competencies gained due to group membership, and (c) students’ perceptions of organization expectations. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlations, regression, one-way ANOVA, and t-tests. Results indicated statistically significant correlations between intensity of involvement and perceived learning, as well as expectations and perceived learning. Regression questions yielded no statistically significant findings, indicating that perceived learning could not be predicted by expectations and involvement variables when combined, nor could intensity of involvement be predicted by expectation and intensity of involvement variables when combined. T-tests run on all variables suggested that three expectation variables – high expectations, consistent and clear feedback, and joined the organization expecting to learn were most important when explaining students’ perceived learning in the co-curriculum. ANOVA tests revealed that presidents and vice presidents of organizations perceived higher levels of learning than did other students in the organization, yet student expectations for learning did not vary based on position in the organization. Implications of research findings were discussed and recommendations for future practice were made, including suggestions such as continued study of non-formal modes as they relate to the co-curriculum, the use of curriculum development models normally used by faculty to develop curricular plans in the co-curriculum, implementation of policies and practices that promote increased student invo lvement, further exploration of the practices of student organization advisors, improved training for student organization advisors, and continued investigation into how the prevalence of hierarchical structures among student organizations impacts learning in the co-curriculum.","Diane L. This performance limitation is a signifi- cant obstacle preventing the scientific community from adopting compiler-enforced array bounds checks. To reduce the overhead, we have created an abstraction that called Index Confinement Regions (ICRs). The basic idea is to place an array into a very large virtual memory region, such that any reference to the array is confined to the region. Only the portion of the ICR corresponding to the array is permissible to access. ICRs reduce the number of necessary bounds checks for n-dimensional array access from 2n to 1 for C, and from n to 0 for Java, yielding a significant reduction in execution time for array-intensive applications.","David K. To learn more about the consequences of jealousy expression, this project proposes and tests four potential cognitive and emotional reactions to another’s jealousy expression. Specifically, general partner uncertainty, relational uncertainty, jealousy-related emotion, and rumination are predicted to arise when one’s close relational partner expresses jealousy. These reactions are examined in relation to relational context (i.e., dating partnership, sibling relationship, and cross-sex friendship) and jealousy expression type (i.e., integrative communication, distributive communication, and negative affect expression). Uncertainty findings revealed that cross-sex friends were more uncertain about the partner and the relationship than either siblings or daters after another expresses jealousy. Siblings experienced greater relational uncertainty than did dating partners when reacting to another’s jealousy expression. In addition, another’s use of negative affect expression was related to greater partner and relational uncertainty compared with another’s use of integrative communication. For jealousy-related emotion, siblings and dating partners experienced stronger jealousy-related emotion compared with cross-sex friends, though jealousyrelated emotion levels did not differ according to jealousy expression type. In terms of rumination, when one’s partner used distributive communication or negative affect expression to communicate jealousy, that individual ruminated more than if integrative communication was used. Rumination levels did not differ according to relational context. In addition, a reaction model of jealousy is presented that specifies the order in which these reactions occur after one’s close partner expresses jealousy. After one’s partner expresses jealousy, that individual first experiences general partner uncertainty, followed by relational uncertainty. Next, the individual ruminates about the jealousy expression and then finally experiences jealousy-related emotion. In this study, the effects of tillage and earthworm activity on SOM and carbon (C) protection were investigated. In the first experiment, the objective was to study the mechanisms by which C is protected under no-tillage (NT) management, using 14C-labeled plant residue. Aggregate-size distribution, total C, and 14C were measured together with different pools of aggregate-associated C and 14C from 21-d laboratory incubations of intact and crushed macro-and microaggregates. The results indicated that (i) more young C (14C) is accumulated in the subsurface soil of conventional tillage (CT) than NT, but this C is not stabilized in the long term, and (ii) short- and long-term stabilization of C is higher in the soil surface layers under NT compared with CT. This C stabilization occurs mainly at the microaggregate level. The objectives of the next set of experiments were to investigate the effects of different earthworm species (Aporrotedea caliginosa and Lumbricus rubellus) on aggregation, aggregate-associated C pools and the formation of stable microaggregates within macroaggregates. Two incubations were set up. The first incubation consisted of soil samples crushed <; 250 µm to break up all macroaggregates with three treatments: (i) control soil; (ii) soil + 13C-labeled residue; and (iii) soil + 13C-labeled residue + earthworms. After 20 days, aggregate size distribution was measured and microaggregates (53-250 µm) were isolated out of the formed macroaggregates (>; 250 µm). A second incubation was conducted to determine protected versus unprotected total C and 13C from 21-day laboratory incubations of intact and crushed macro- and microaggregates. The results indicated that microaggregates are rapidly formed within earthworm casts and showed the direct involvement of earthworms in inducing an important protection of soil C at the microaggregate level. The results also suggested that important interactions between earthworm species take place affecting the incorporation of fresh residue-derived C and the formation of stable microaggregates when fresh residue was placed on the surface.","Paul F. The pharmacokinetics of the nucleoside analog (2S, 4R)-1-2-[2- (hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl]-5-iodouracil (IOddU), a potent in vitro antagonist of Epstein-Barr virus replication, were investigated. Total (mean ( † ± rsd)) and renal clearance after iv administration were 1.44 (0.588) and 0.69 (0.46) L/h/kg in six male Sprague-Dawley rats. Volume of distribution was 0.643 (0.619) L/kg. In order to support development of a clean, simple, and precise means of determining glomerular filtration rate in dogs, the plasma clearance of iohexol was compared with urinary creatinine clearance at different levels of obesity (lean, fattened, and obese). Absolute plasma clearance of iohexol increased with obesity as expected; body weight adjusted plasma clearance of iohexol did not increase significantly. A three point method sampling in the terminal phase overpredicted urinary creatinine clearance slightly. The nucleoside analogs, 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine and (-)-2',3'-dideoxy-3'- thiacytidine (AZT, 3TC) are potent inhibitors of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) for which lymph tissues serve as viral sanctuaries. The lymphatic disposition of AZT and 3TC in cats were determined. Lymph tissues included were tonsil, thymus, submandibular, bronchiolar, sternal, and mesenteric lymph nodes. Mean overall lymph tissue concentrations of AZT and 3TC were 8.13 (0.79) and 7.74 (0.66). Tissue to plasma concentration ratios were 0.36 (0.76) and 0.44 (0.51) for AZT and 3TC. Bromodichloromethane is a hepatic carcinogen present in chlorinated drinking water. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was developed to simulate concentrations in plasma and tissues of the Japanese Medaka fish (Orynchias latipes). Subjects/Keywords: Packaging is an important element responsible for brand growth and one of the main rea-sons for producers to gain competitive advantages through technological innovation. In this re-gard, the aim of this work is to design a fully autonomous electronic system for a smart bottle packaging, being integrated in a European project named ROLL-OUT. The desired application for the smart bottle is to act as a fill-level sensor system in order to determine the liquid content level that exists inside an opaque bottle, so the consumer can exactly know the remaining quantity of the product inside. An in-house amorphous indium–gallium–zinc oxide thin-film transistor (a-IGZO TFT) model, previously developed, was used for circuit designing purposes. This model was based in an artificial neural network (ANN) equivalent circuit approach. Taking into account that only n-type oxide TFTs were used, plenty of electronic building-blocks have been designed: clock generator, non-overlapping phase generator, a capacitance-to-voltage converter and a comparator. As it was demonstrated by electrical simulations, it has been achieved good functionality for each block, having a final system with a power dissipation of 2.3 mW (VDD=10 V) not considering the clock generator. Four printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been also designed in order to help in the testing phase. Mask layouts were already designed and are currently in fabrication, foreseeing a suc-cessful circuit fabrication, and a major step towards the design and integration of complex trans-ducer systems using oxide TFTs technology; Capacitance-to-voltage converter; Comparator; Oxide TFTs circuit integration; Domínio/Área Científica::Engenharia e Tecnologia::Engenharia dos Materiais

Subjects/Keywords: In order to ensure long-term adoption and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies; they must be designed to support children to participate within everyday activities and routines that are prioritized by families. Nine parents of children with cerebral palsy who used AAC technologies participated in semi-structured interviews to provide their perspectives of how AAC technologies were integrated into the functional contexts of everyday life. Five major themes emerged from the discussions: (a) integrating AAC into life; (b) AAC technologies; (c) child needs and skills; (d) parent responsibilities and priorities; and (e) AAC process and decision-making. Children were able to use AAC technologies within a variety of everyday contexts with various partners; however; challenges included access to AAC within physical and outdoor activities and partners who lacked knowledge regarding operational competencies and effective interaction strategies. In order to integrate AAC technologies into life; parents prioritized technology features including ease of programming; improved physical design (e.g.; lighter; wearable; easy to mount; durable); features to enhance efficiency and ease of access (e.g.; brain-computer interface; sentence prediction); and availably of multiple functions and features (e.g.; facial recognition software; augmented reality; projection capabilities; capability to control wheelchair). AAC manufacturers and mainstream technology developers should work to ensure that technologies are responsive to the supports; limitations; and ideal features identified by parents. Future research should seek input from a larger group of stakeholders and use longitudinal methods to examine perceptions of AAC technologies over time. Keywords: technology design; augmentative and alternative communication; parents; cerebral palsy; service delivery; technology design; family

Subjects/Keywords: Réseaux de capteurs sans fil; MIMO; Clustering; Diversité de polarisation; Capacité; Énergie; Localisation; Beamforming; Technique de sélection; The aim of this work is to study from a signal processing point of view the use of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication systems for algorithms dedicated to wireless sensor networks. We investigate energy-constrained wireless sensor networks and we focus on cluster topology of the network. This topology permits for the use of MIMO communication system model. First, we review different aspects that characterize the wireless sensor network. Then, we introduce the existing strategies for energy conservation in the network. The basic concepts of MIMO systems are presented in the second chapter and numerical results are provided for evaluating the performances of MIMO techniques. Of particular interest, polarization diversity over rich scattering environment is studied. Thereafter, beamforming approach is proposed for the development of an original localization algorithm in wireless sensor network. The novel algorithm is described and performances are evaluated by simulation. We determine the optimal system configuration between a pair of clusters that permits for the highest capacity to energy ratio in the fourth chapter. The final chapter is devoted to sensor nodes selection in wireless sensor network. The aim of using such technique is to make energy conservation in the network.; MIMO; Clustering; Polarization diversity; Capacity; Energy; Localization; Beamforming; Selection technique

Mestrado em Sociologia

O neoliberalismo como a versão atual do capitalismo tem produzido uma série de problemas, o agravamento da tendência capitalista a mercantilização universal… (more)

Subjects/Keywords: Neoliberalism as the current version of capitalism has produced a number of problems, the worsening capitalist tendency to universal commodification where everything is commodified, including education, health, culture and sports. Availing this system the individual interest where social and economic rights are minimized. The basic principles of neoliberalism are: Minimum state participation in the economy of a country, very little government intervention in the labor market, privatization of state, free movement of international capital, emphasis on globalization, opening the economy to the entry of multinationals, adoption measures against economic protectionism and bureaucracy of the state. Whereas education is more than a form of capital investment, neoliberal conception of education that became another of capitalist economic policy model strengthening element implemented in and by countries in socio economic development. In the neoliberal discourse education passes to enter the capitalist market soon working their similarity, leaving just to be part of the social and political sphere, the political content of citizenship has been replaced by consumer rights. Hence the neoliberal view that parents and students are consumers. In general, we see that in recent years through official documents show the presence of neoliberal strategies being implemented in Brazil. Similarly education has been focused on the interests of capital owners. So with this research I analyze the influence that this new capitalist strand has caused the Brazilian basic education.; Dominação; Educação; Impacto; Globalização; Neoliberalism; Domination; Education; Impact; Globalization
