▼ The primary focus of this thesis is the evaluation through experimental and numerical investigations of pipeline performance under earthquake-induced ground deformation. This kind of deformation is associated with soil liquefaction, landslides, fault rupture, tectonic uplift and subsidence and settlement of loose granular soils. A large part of this thesis involves the earthquake response of pipelines with defects, e.g., cracks and/or leaking joints, rehabilitated with
cured-in-
place linings (CIPLs). The thesis begins with the description of a series of full-scale static and dynamic axial tension tests to characterize the tensile capacity of CIPL-reinforced pipelines. The CIPL de-bonding is of great importance for the accommodation of tensile deformation. The amount of CIPL de-bonding is a function of the CIPL properties (i.e. stiffness, tensile strength) with respect to the pipe/CIPL interface bond strength, which increases with increasing internal pressure. A one-dimensional finite element model is developed that accounts for the CIPL de-bonding mechanism as a Mode II fracture propagation phenomenon, including the enhanced pipe/CIPL interface strength in the presence of internal pressure. Seismic wave interaction with CIPL-reinforced pipelines subjects them to alternating tension and compression as the waves propagate through the ground. The combinations of ground velocity amplitude and pulse period that cause lining deformation are evaluated through analytical models of seismic wave/pipeline interaction and finite element simulations. CIPL-strengthened pipeline response to permanent ground deformation was also investigated through large-scale fault rupture experiments and numerical simulations. Fault rupture test results on pipelines with CIPLs are presented and compared with test results on unlined pipelines, to assess the effectiveness of the CIPLs for seismic retrofit. The results of the numerical model developed in this work that accounts for de-bonding between the lining and pipe as Mode II fracture propagation are in good agreement with full-scale fault rupture test results. The thesis also includes a comprehensive evaluation of ductile iron (DI) pipeline response to earthquake-induced ground deformation through the results of a large-scale testing program, including a fault rupture test on a 150-mm DI pipeline with restrained axial slip joints. Three different types of DI joints are considered in this study: push-on, restrained, and restrained axial slip joints, which are often referred to as hazard-resilient joints. A series of axial tension, axial compression, four-point bending and ground rupture test results conducted on DI jointed pipes are used to identify the limit states associated with DI joint performance. A two-dimensional finite element model accounting for (i) coupled shear/normal forces to the pipeline and (ii) bell resistance to movement, validated against large-scale fault rupture test results, is used for the quantification of the DI pipeline performance under strike-slip faulting…

▼ This thesis summarizes the testing procedures and key results of full-scale tests on
Cured-In-
Place Pipe (CIPP) to evaluate its performance under earthquake induced ground deformation. The CIPP used in this work is commercially available as Aqua-pipe, manufactured by Sanexen Environmental Services, Inc. to rehabilitate water mains. The investigation covered in this work includes tensile coupon tests, direct tension tests, friction tests, and direct shear tests. The test results improve the understanding and characterization of the axial force vs. displacement relationship for CIPP movement relative to the host pipe, lining/pipe interface friction, and the effects of geometry, internal pressure, and repeated loading on the axial force vs. relative displacement relationship. The direct tension test results show that the mobilization of axial force is affected by Mode II fracture propagation, friction between the exterior surface of the lining and interior surface of the host pipe, and geometric resistance generated by the relative movement of the lining within a host pipe of variable inside diameter. The most important finding from the direct tension tests is that substantial additional axial forces may be mobilized after debonding as the lining is affected by geometric interference caused by movement through a pipe with variable internal diameter. The test results provide a first-time confirmation of this loading mechanism. The friction tests show that the axial load response is independent of loading rate, with a similar load range and maximum load for the tests conducted at 1 in. (25 mm)/min, 10 in. (250 mm)/min, and 100 in. (2500 mm)/min. The first friction test, done under no pressure, developed larger axial forces due to the greater frictional resistance between the lining and pipe than in a subsequent test under the same testing conditions and geometry. The difference in the axial loads show that over-cleaned field pipes or new ductile iron pipes can have a greater frictional resistance between the lining and pipe than properly cleaned or previously loaded pipes. The most important result from the friction tests involves the influence of internal pressure on axial load response. As the internal pressure increased, the axial load for a given displacement increased linearly. Regressions of axial load vs. internal pressure at the same levels of displacement show a clear linear relationship with similar slopes. The results of the direct shear tests for new ductile iron and field cast iron pipes show a coefficient of friction of 0.61. This value represents the relatively smooth debonded lining surface conditions representative of the CIPP cleaning and lining process for old cast iron water mains. It also represents the interface between the lining and new ductile iron pipe after repeated displacements. The test results show that a coefficient of friction of 0.84 is a good estimate for lining/pipe interfaces that are rough and irregular.

▼ We address the problem of quickly inverting the standard representation of a permutation on n elements in place. First, we present a naive algorithm to do it using O(log n) extra bits in O(n2) time in the worst case. We then improve that algorithm, using a small bit vector, to use O(√ n) extra bits in O(n √ n) time. Using a different approach, we present an algorithm to do it using O(√ n log n) extra bits in O(n log n) time. Finally, for our main result, we present a technique that leads to an algorithm to invert the standard representation of a permutation using only O(log2 n) extra bits of space in O(n log n) time in the worst case.

▼ This thesis begins with a critical introduction about the function of
place in works of fiction and creative nonfiction. I use quotes from Joan Didion, Flannery O'Connor, Dorothy Allison, and others to support the idea that, though many hold to the belief that people are shaped by
place, really it is people who prescribe meaning to landscape and location, not the other way around.
Place is at the mercy of memory and language. After the critical introduction, you will find short stories, flash fiction, essay, short memoir, and flash nonfiction. These works were not written with a specific theme in mind, but the strongest thread throughout is certainly a sense of
place and accompanying culture, particularly in my memoir piece, "Empire Blue," which explores my parents' relationship, its effects on me as a child moving from one military base to the next, and my reflections on those effects now.

▼ Did place attachment have an impact on the mobility decisions of older adults post-Hurricane Katrina? This exploratory study used data from the American Community Survey (ACS) to examine why older adults chose either to stay in New Orleans
and remain in their homes; or why they returned back to their homes shortly after Hurricane Katrina(one year later) by looking at multiple contributing factors associated with place attachment. The empirical model used for analysis looked at factors
related to economic security and social influences attributed to place attachment, while controlling for a number of demographic and socioeconomic variables. The results showed that while both age and having grandchildren decreased the likelihood of
older adults to either remain in their homes, or return shortly after Hurricane Katrina, there are still policy implications that are important for older adults wanting to age in place.

▼ The aim of this research project is to create an expressive body of drawings derived from exploring personal experiences with place and landscape. The objective is to visually capture experiential and emotive dimensions of place as an alternate way of depicting landscape and understanding place.
The impetus for the project and its subject matter derives through personal experience of Tasman Island that lies approximately 1 kilometre off the southeastern coast of Tasmania. I am drawn to the island by its wild and imposing natural elements and its wildly varying weather conditions. Throughout the project four trips were made to the island and these, together with both historical and pictorial accounts of the island, form the basis of imagery.
Mark making and gesture are central to methods. Approaches to mark-making were explored through a variety of figurative forms from representational through to purely abstract. The objective was to establish drawing forms that best expressed a sense of an embodied relationship to landscape and place.
Key within these methods was the use of the scribble and rhythmic gestural drawing. Explorations within mark-making were expanded through investigation into figure and ground relations and through adoption of processes of chance. As the project developed the performative dimensions elemental to large-scale gestural drawing became increasingly important.
The project is primarily located with reference to the work of Gosia Wlodarczak, Claude Heath, Akio Makigawa and Vija Celmins as well as three 19th century drawings of Tasman Island. Works are discussed in relation to core conceptual and methodological focus of my project, specifically how each artist has employed mark-making and gesture to express a deeply personal experience of landscape and to place.
The outcomes of the project are evidenced through works comprising the submission exhibition, through backup works and supporting exegesis. These outputs contribute to the field of art practice concerned with issues of environment and place but also to broader philosophical debates about the relationship of humans, subjectivity and the natural environment. Through their forging a deeper connection to place and the natural environment the drawings provide an alternate to more conventional visualisations that give primacy to objectified representations of place.

▼ Cold in-
place recycling (CIR) is a pavement rehabilitation technique which has
gained momentum in recent years. This momentum is due partly to its economic and
sustainability characteristics, which has led to CIR market expansion. When pavement
network deterioration is considered alongside increasing material costs, it is not beyond
reason to expect demands on CIR to continue to increase.
Historically, single component binder (SCB) systems, those with one stabilization
binder (or two if the secondary binder dosage is 1% or less), have dominated the CIR
market and could be considered the general state of practice. Common stabilization
binders are either bituminous or cementitious. Two example SCB systems would be: 1)
3% portland cement, or 2) 3% asphalt emulsion with 1% hydrated lime.
While traditional SCB systems have demonstrated positive economic and
sustainability impacts, this dissertation focuses on multiple component binder (MCB)
systems (bituminous and cementitious combined) which exhibit the potential to provide
better overall economics and performance. Use of MCBs has the potential to alleviate
SCB issues to some extent (e.g. cracking with cementitious SCBs, rutting with
bituminous SCBs). Furthermore, to fairly represent both binders in an MCB system a
universal design method which can accommodate multiple binder types is needed.
The main objectives of this dissertation are to develop a universal CIR design
framework and, using this framework, characterize multiple SCB and MCB systems.
Approximately 1500 CIR specimens were tested herein along with approximately 300
asphalt concrete specimens which serve as a reference data set for CIR characterization.
A case study of a high-traffic Mississippi CIR project which included cement SCB and
emulsion SCB sections is also presented to support laboratory efforts.
Individual components needed to comprise a universal design framework, such as
curing protocols, were developed. SCB and MCB characterization indicated that cement
SCBs yielded low cracking resistance, high rutting resistance, and lower costs. Emulsion
SCBs yielded the opposite. MCBs demonstrated the ability to balance rutting, cracking,
and economics. Overall, the universal framework presented appears promising as it could
offer agencies flexibility and, in some cases, improved overall performance beyond that
of current SCB design methods.

relationship between perceptions of policing as a suitable career option and
individual socialisation. The primary factor identified in the literature as influencing
career choice is gender socialisation - within the family, from significant others,
through educational institutions and within the workplace. This factor is related to
the development of personal attributes such as self-esteem and perceptions of
gender-appropriate activities. Further, the research examines whether a
policewoman's gender identity influences her experience of policing. A conceptual
framework was developed integrating Bourdieu's (1990) concepts of 'habitus'
'field' and 'culture', Connell's (2002) concept of 'negotiated gender' and
Messerschmidt's (2002) concept of situated gender performance. The research was
conducted within Western Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian police services
using a mixed methods approach: that is, a survey distributed to both male and
female police constables; interviews with female police constables and observations
in the police workplace. The findings suggest that there are more similarities than
differences between male and female officers. Although different socialisation
factors are involved, both male and female officers were found to have low
attachment to stereotypical gender expectations and similar levels of self-esteem.
Overall, female officers had higher levels of education and provided more evidence
of leadership potential than their male counterparts. In interviews and observations
it was found that while police culture is influential on policing practice, female
officers are negotiating gender and using agency to change the way policing is
performed. These findings have implications for the development of recruitment
and retention strategies for police services and contribute to a sociological
understanding of the relationship between gender socialisation, career choice and
performance of gender in a masculine workplace.

▼ Nanowires have become of great interest for many applications in different fields of science and engineering. They have many interesting properties, such as high surface area to volume ratios and tunable electrical properties. These properties make nanowires ideal for integration into electronic and optoelectronic high performance devices. Nanowire-based logic devices are still in an embryonic stage and more research is needed for the integration of nanowire building blocks into CMOS technology. For the potential future of semiconductor nanowires in very-large-scale-integrated VLSI circuits, the challenge of high density alignment and precise placement of nanowires for individual device control must be addressed.
The “Grow-in-Place” approach for encapsulated nanowires can overcome some of the limitation of post-growth integration of these one-dimensional materials by essentially combining growth and integration into a single step. In order to build robust nanowire FETs, precise control over the in-plan growth of the nanowires must be realized. The grow-in-
place approach can provide an excellent platform for innovative nanowire based TFTs. This thesis is intended to investigate alternative sacrificial materials to fabricate nanochannels for in-plane growth of encapsulated SiNWs using the grow-in-
place approach. The objective is to advance the current grow-in-
place approach that has been proposed by the Fonash Research Group. This keen interest in optimizing the approach is important in order to make encapsulated growth of SiNWs commercially feasible and economical for high volumetric device integration of nanowire FETs that will enhance the performance of current CMOS technology.

▼ While cognitive deficits have been described in the heterozygous Pten (+/-) KO mouse model of autism, little work has been done to demonstrate how corresponding
in vitro physiological alterations in this model may underpin these cognitive deficits
in vivo. As Pten KO (+/-) is known to alter electrophysiological characteristics of neurons
in vitro, this study measures the
in vivo electrophysiological characteristics of CA1 interneurons, pyramidal cells, and
place cells which may underlie the spatial cognitive deficits seen in the model. Four transgenic conditional heterozygous <em>Pten
+/loxPloxP</em>;
Gfap-cre mice (HetPten) and four homozygous Pten littermate control mice were used in this study. This transgene drives cre expression and excision of the
Pten gene in hippocampal granule cells of the dentate gyrus, and neurons in CA2 and CA1, but not astrocytes.
In vivo local field potentials and single cell recordings were made in CA1 of each mouse during an open field foraging task in two distinct arenas. HetPten mice were found to have increased interneuron and pyramidal cell firing rates. In addition,
place cells demonstrated abnormal properties including increased out-of-field firing rates, an increased number of fields, and trends towards larger field sizes that were less stable in comparison to controls. HetPten mice had slower CA1 fast gamma oscillations and more variable speed/theta oscillation correlations. Behaviorally, there were weak trends towards decreased motor output compared to controls. These data suggest that the electrophysiological alterations due to Pten KO (+/-) in mouse hippocampal neurons lead to hyperactivation of CA1 interneurons, pyramidal cells, and
place cells.

▼ What happens when the home expects the unexpected?
Since the beginning of the current housing price rise in 2012, homeownership in New Zealand has become increasingly difficult. The desire to enter the property market has been impeded by the unsuitability of current housing stock that no longer meets the needs of the modern household.
While it is widely accepted by economists, yet denied by politicians, New Zealand is amid a housing crisis. The government is addressing the issue by introducing a means to allow housing to be produced more quickly. This new housing is expected to mitigate the issues surrounding a shortage of land and population increase, by developing a large proportion of new developments in the classification of medium density housing.
With a shortfall of 10,000 houses per annum, the current situation presents an opportunity to reassess how medium density housing (MDH) is configured in New Zealand. To break the cycle of housing stock rendering itself unsuitable in the future, this thesis aims to investigate how housing could be designed to allow for change over time.
All age groups stand to benefit from a home that is carefully planned and considers their lifetime needs. An established design framework enables the prefabricated modular system to adapt, reflecting the lifetime requirements of its occupants.
The outcome is an innovative, alternate design solution that considers the wellbeing of occupants through a lifetime design approach, offering adaptability and efficient production through prefabrication.
A home that expects the unexpected.

▼ Understanding how memory, learning and reward work in unison to form adaptive and sometime maladaptive behaviour is at the forefront of modern neuroscience. The largest unmet need in treating maladaptive reward learning behaviours such as addiction is maintaining long-term abstinence and preventing relapse after re-exposure to drug-associated cues. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) have been implicated in responses to drugs of abuse other than nicotine (Rahman et al., 2015) and the aim of this work was to characterise the role of α7 nAChRs in morphine reward learning using conditioned place preference (CPP). The α7 nAChR antagonist methyllycaconitine (MLA) was used to determine if these receptors contribute to specific stages of drug-paired learning, namely acquisition, expression, reconsolidation or reinstatement of morphine-CPP. In 7-8week old C57BL/6J mice MLA (4mg/kg, s.c), given 20 minutes prior to a conditioning dose of morphine (10mg/kg, i.p) or post-test trial, had no effect on the acquisition, reconsolidation or expression of morphine-CPP. However, when given 20 minutes prior to a priming dose of morphine (5mg/kg, i.p), MLA (4mg/kg, s.c) significantly inhibited drug-induced reinstatement. The mechanisms of this effect were investigated using glutamate receptor autoradiography. Changes in 2-Amino-3-(3-hydroxy-5-methyl-isoxazol-4-yl)propanoic acid (AMPA) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) binding were examined in mice treated with either saline or MLA at morphine reinstatement. There were no significant changes in NMDA receptor binding (using [3H]MK-801) but morphine reinstatement significantly increased [3H]AMPA binding in the CA1/2 of the ventral but not dorsal hippocampus, or in any other brain regions examined (including mPFC, nucleus accumbens, amygdala and VTA). The selective increase in the hippocampus was partially antagonised by MLA, linking α7 nAChR activation to glutamatergic synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Intracranial infusions of MLA into the ventral but not the dorsal hippocampus or medial prefrontal cortex blocked reinstatement to morphine-CPP in male Wistar rats.

Pilotointi toi omaisille turvallisuuden tunnetta ja he uskoivat laitteiden tukevan kotona asumista.
This Master’s thesis is a part of the pilot study “Supporting Elderly People Living at Home with Help of New Technology”. The pilot study is a part of Western Finland’s National Development Programme for Social Welfare and Health Care (Kaste) “Operational in Ageing–Developing the Service Structure and Operational Model of Elderly Services in Western Finland in 2010–2012” which was implemented in Eurajoki municipality in 2012–2013. importance with respect to time of absorption, form of nitrogen absorbed, rate of application,
concentration in the leaf and numerous other aspects. Soil nitrogen must be sufficient during
early and mid-season growth stages to ensure vigorous, but not excessive growth, and it
should be nearly depleted by flowering for the plant to mature and ripen properly insuring a
quality leaf. In general, as total N in the plant increases, above the amount required for
maximum growth, quality of flue-
cured tobacco tends to decrease.
Field studies were conducted at two locations in both 2006 and in 2007 to evaluate
response to nitrogen rates. Cultivars NC 71 and K 346 were selected for this study based on
differences in the North Carolina Official Variety Test, with NC 71 averaging greater than
450 kg/ha more yield than K 346. Also, it has been observed that K 346 has a lower quality
index than NC 71 when both varieties are produced using similar rates of nitrogen. Calcium
nitrate was used as the total source of nitrogen and rates used were 45, 56, 67, 78, and 90 kg
of nitrogen per hectare. Nitrogen was split applied with one half of the total applied within
the first week after transplanting and the balance applied approximately 14 days later. All
other production practices followed standard practices for the individual research station.
There were significant main effects for variety. NC 71 averaged 3175 kg/ha while K 346
averaged 2798. There were no differences between varieties for grade index or dollars per
kilogram. Dollars per hectare followed the same trend as yield with NC 71 grossing $1,247
dollars more per hectare than K 346. The main effect for nitrogen rate was also significant.
Yield and dollars per hectare increased as nitrogen rate increased up to 78 kg of nitrogen per
hectare. Total alkaloids increased as nitrogen increased and total reducing sugars decreased.
Although yield between the cultivars was different the trends were the same with response to
nitrogen. As the nitrogen rate increased, yield for both cultivars increased with no negative
affect on quality. Therefore, K 346 requires the same rate of nitrogen to achieve maximum
yield as NC 71 even though there was a significant difference in yield between the two
cultivars.
Studies were conducted at one location in 2006 and two locations in 2007 in order to
determine if fertilization with urea or urea plus Agrotain (urease inhibitor) would produce
flue-
cured tobacco similar to that obtained from a nitrogen regime of all nitrate nitrogen.
Treatments consisted of three sources of nitrogen: calcium nitrate, urea, and urea plus
Agrotain and applied at rates to provide 56 and 78 kg of nitrogen per…

▼ Prior to the invention of refrigeration, the addition of salt during meat processing was used for meat preservation. Present day,
cured meats have a combination of salts and sodium nitrite that will inhibit most psychrophilic flora (spoilage bacteria) thus increasing shelf life of products. Thermal processing of meat products to an internal temperature of 65˚C to 77˚C is sufficient enough to kill most harmful microorganisms. Brine chillers are used in industry to keep cure at a cool, constant temperature. If brine temperature exceeds 10˚C, along with the addition of erythorbate, there will be a rapid reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide gas which will escape before brine injection. With brine temperatures below 10˚C, the reduction of nitrite to nitric oxide to nitrosylhemochrome will remain in the brine without evaporation, allowing a greater amount of nitrite in the brine available to cure the meat. Research has been conducted at the University of Arkansas on the effects of brine and ham temperature on injection yield, instrumental color, tenderness, and sensory characteristics of
cured hams; however, no research has been conducted on the effects of brine temperature on ham and bacon processing and sensory characteristics. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of brine temperature on ham and bacon processing characteristics as well as an additional experiment designed to test the effects of a brine and ham temperature combination on processing characteristics. The objective of these experiments was twofold: 1) evaluate the effects of brine temperature on ham and bacon processing characteristics and 2) evaluate the effects of brine temperature and meat temperature on ham processing characteristics. For this set of experiments, a total of 170 pork knuckles and 60 pork bellies were used to evaluate the effects of brine temperature. In the first ham experiment, 111 ham knuckles and 60 bellies were randomly allotted to 1 of 3 brine treatment groups; 1) -1˚C (Cold), 2) 7.2˚C (Average), or 3) 15˚C (Warm). For the second portion of the experiment, 59 of the 170 ham knuckles were randomly allotted to 1 of the 3 same brine treatment groups as the previous experiment. However, each of the knuckles were tempered to equal the brine temperature in which they were allotted. In the first experiment (brine temperature with equal temperature hams), processing characteristics including initial weight, pumped weight, drained pumped weight, initial pump uptake percentage, drained pump uptake percentage, cooked weight, cooked yield, and chilled weight did not differ (P ≥ 0.32) among treatments. A trending dif teference (P = 0.06) occurred among treatments for evaporative chill loss percentage. Instrumental color differed (P < 0.02) among treatments with a 1.2 unit greater L* (lighter color) value for warm, however, the magnitude of difference was not great enough for consumers to notice a difference. A trending difference (P = 0.07) was detected for a* values, and no differences were detected…

▼ Light-curable epoxy resins, methacrylate-based resins in particular, were a major improvement to the dental field, especially to orthodontic treatments. Indeed they provide a strong bonding of the bracket to the enamel while requiring the minimal amount of work as they do not require mixing time and only take a few second to polymerise when submitted to the proper wavelength. However, if optimal polymerisation is not met, or if the resin is submitted to wet conditions while still uncured, methacrylate monomers are known to leach out in the mouth environment. Besides being potentially harmful, cytotoxic, and the cause of bad, or incomplete treatments, these leakages create an extremely bitter aftertaste forcing the practitioner to rush their work, leading to improper polymerisation. In this work, a natural sweetener protein was used to modify the taste of the monomers leakage without altering the resins’ properties. The protein chosen, thaumatin, is an intensely sweet protein with a sweetness threshold in the nanomolar range. This flavour adjuvant was successfully added to a methacrylate- based orthodontic epoxy resin before being submitted to water or simulated saliva in order to analyse the leakage. Significant differences were found between the release in water and the release in simulated saliva. Mechanical tests were performed to see the effects, if any, the protein had on the dental resin properties, such as microhardness and rate of conversion during the polymerisation process. The studies performed for this Thesis, suggest that using a protein, such as thaumatin, is a viable method to modify the taste of the dental composite leakage without weakening the composite’s structural integrity.

The Role of Architectural Design in Enhancing Place Attachment for Older Adults in Retirement Communities.

▼ New Zealand, like many other countries, is experiencing a significant change in its population. According to Statistics New Zealand (2015), the number of people aged 65 and over (65+) is on the rise, having doubled since 1980, and the number is likely to double again by 2036 (Statistics New Zealand, 2013). Retirement villages are a relatively new residential-type that caters for this ageing population. Demand for this form of housing by a small but increasing number is influenced by the growth in the number of people living beyond retirement age and because of a lack of other appropriate alternatives. Relocating to such housing requires many residents to adjust to an entirely new environment and lifestyle.
Place attachment is understood to support successful adjustment to a new condition, aiding older adults to age contentedly in their new surroundings and as a result, age in
place.
This research highlights the relationships between architectural features and people’s sense of
place attachment, arguing that
place and space are important variables for how older adults feel about ageing in a retirement village. The key questions in this research are: What are the design features in planned retirement villages that can enhance the satisfaction of residents, the sense of
place they feel and their attachment to it? Finding the answers to these questions requires understanding how a sense of
place attachment develops, the degree to which each causal factor affects this sense, and also the effects between factors. A total of 22 residents of a recently completed retirement village in Wellington, all aged 65+, were recruited through purposive and snowballing sampling. Data were collected through a mixed-methods approach using photovoice and semi-structured interviews. The aim was to explore at two scales, those of the home and of the neighbourhood, the features of a physical environment that older adults consider important for enhancing
place attachment and facilitating ageing in
place.
The findings reveal that themes such as age-friendly design and autonomy related to the functionality of space (
place dependence) were important in enhancing older adults attachment to
place. Findings from this research also show that having an open/semi-open layout of internal space, large windows and plenty of sunlight, accessible large closet and storage space, shared/public green space and accessible and age-friendly design of entry, bathroom and kitchen area are features most participants found to be important in raising their sense of attachment to where they live.
This research suggests that retirement villages could be an option for older adults to age in
place and to ensure that they can develop a sense of attachment it is important to hear their voice and engage potential users at an early stage in the design process.
The outcomes of this study could aid older adults when looking for a suitable retirement village or even alternative housing. They could also serve other researchers in the fields of gerontology, architecture and…

▼ Developing a place into ‘a good place to live’ for
people of all ages is a prioritized issue in many municipalities in
Sweden, as well as around the world. But what do we really mean by
‘a good place to live’? How do the residents themselves comprehend
and perceive ‘a good place to live’? And how do municipalities view
their place and what they offer to their residents? This thesis
explores how ‘a good place to live’ can be understood,
conceptualized and studied, and the roles co-creation and the
residents themselves play in this context. Taking the resident as a
starting point and using the service-based logic as a theoretical
foundation, this thesis connects the stream of research within
place marketing focusing on co-creation and the users’ role with
the stream of research dealing with success measurements and place

▼ The rising numbers of individuals emerging into older adulthood may lead to overcrowding of current facilities in the near future. Many existing facilities do not seem to be preferable environments for numerous older adults deciding where they will live out the duration of their life. Facilities often appear to neglect two important aspects of transitioning to a new home and aging in
place in older adulthood:
place attachment and autonomy. This study examined the opinions of potential residents regarding the residential floor plan design of senior cohousing communities as a means to provide older adults with an alternative housing option in which they may optimally age in
place. For this study, current and potential members of a senior cohousing community participated in unstructured, individual interviews and in an open-ended focus group to gather this information. Data collected from participants was used in conjunction with the seven universal design guidelines to guide the design of four individual floor plans that addressed
place attachment and perceived autonomy. These floor plans were presented to participants in a questionnaire with a post-evaluation that determined the observed successes and deficiencies of the floor plans in promoting
place attachment and perceived autonomy in relation to aging in
place. These observed successes and deficiencies were based on participants' perceived connectedness to the residences, creating relationships with other members within the community, and whether they would feel autonomous within that residence. According to the responses of the post-evaluation questionnaires, it was supported that the four individual floor plans would promote both
place attachment and perceived autonomy. The collected responses from the post-evaluation provided evidence that these four floor plans could work for future senior cohousing communities whose members may opt for universally designed residences. Results from this study may aid older adults in finding a new alternative housing option in senior cohousing in which they can optimally age in
place. This study may serve other researchers in the fields of interior design, architecture, and gerontology as it may provide answers to the gap in literature concerning the residential preferences of older adults.

▼ The objectives of this study were: a) analyze the impact of different variables on a performance based mix design method for cold in-
place recycling (CIR), b) develop a practical method for CIR in-
place density determination during construction, and c) conduct long-term performance and benefit-cost analysis of CIR pavements throughout Nevada over the period of 2000-2015.Four types of asphalt emulsions, two contents of lime slurry (4.5 and 6.0%), and two types of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) gradations; a medium graded RAP according to the Pacific Coast Committee on Asphalt Specifications (PCCAS), and a non-graded RAP passing 1.0 inch sieve, were used for the mix design of CIR. The mix designs were conducted following a method using the Superpave gyratory compactor, and evaluated for their moisture susceptibility and raveling performance. Gradation plays a role on the optimum emulsion content (OEC) determination for CIR mixtures, whereas there is no noticeable increase on the performance by using 6.0 or 4.5% lime slurry.Three test methods were used to determine the in-
place density of CIR pavements; the Sand Cone test method, the Balloon test method, and permeability testing using the NCAT field permeameter. Density tests were conducted on full scale CIR slabs produced in the laboratory and compared to the actual density of the compacted CIR layer obtained from core samples drilled out of the slabs. Permeability test was difficult to perform, and was discarded due to water leaks around the base of the equipment causing fines to wash away from the CIR mixture while performing the test. The best alternative to estimate the in-
place air voids is the Sand Cone method coupled with measuring the bulk density of the cores using the parafilm technique. Field verification conducted on a CIR project in Fernley, Nevada, confirmed the selected test method results.Long-term performance analysis was conducted on CIR pavements constructed in Nevada during the period of 2000-2015. A total of 94 CIR pavements were identified throughout Nevada; 63 CIR pavements with AC overlays and 31 CIR pavements with surface treatments. Pavement condition index (PCI) data indicated that most of the CIR projects are in excellent or in very good condition, at the age of 15 years for CIR pavements with AC overlays and at 12 years for CIR pavements with surface treatments. The benefit cost analysis determined that pavements with lower AADT and lower CIR thickness tend to have higher benefit cost ratio, indicating a strong interaction between the structural design of the CIR pavement and its long-term performance.

▼ This dissertation argues that transnational literatures of the 1990s emphasize everyday place-making during a period when physical distance might be erased through new technologies and social identities might be understood diffuse and "groundless." Drawing on a range of cross-disciplinary scholarship on space and transnationality, this project maps the literary place-consciousness of the "long nineties" (1989-2001) by attending to each text's representation of the multiple histories and geographies of a given place and how characters' identities are shaped by them. Specifically, each author imagines real places marked by vertical, (post)colonial relationships and lateral, transnational ones in a transitional period of geopolitics neither overdetermined by Cold War factionalism nor circumscribed by a twenty-first century, Euro-American "war on terror." The resulting transformation of these places offers Nadine Gordimer and Salman Rushdie (chapters 1 and 2, respectively) opportunities to grapple with spatial legacies of British imperialism while forging new place-making practices. Gordimer's The Pickup suggests that a productive sense of place might be recovered by fleeing corrupt postcolonial space for a "pure," local space, while Rushdie's The Satanic Verses recognizes that coming to terms with postcolonial spatial politics means understanding space as underwritten by racial and sexual difference. In contrast to the post-imperialist legacies that haunt but do not dominate Gordimer and Rushdie's work, Karen Tei Yamashita's Tropic of Orange (chapter 3) and Joe Sacco's Palestine (chapter 4) suggest that colonialist spatial practices continue to have real, material effects in the 1990s. The former engages the intersection settler colonialist boundary-making and neocolonial boundary erasure located at the U.S.-Mexico border; the latter represents national narration as an act of claiming place, therevy resisting settler colonialist logics of elimination. While previous scholarship tended to focus on representations of hyper-mobility, placelessness, and deterritorialization, this dissertation ultimately seeks to re-introduce overlooked spatial-historical contexts of the "long nineties" into current scholarship in postcolonial and transnational literature studies. Such an approach generates new ways of understanding how authors attempt to reconcile sweeping, globalized flows of power with everyday spatial practice.

▼ A two-dimensional constant heating rate thermoelastic model has been used to develop design and selection criteria for refractory components of linings of high-temperature furnaces and process vessels. The criteria are in the form of resistance to fracture initiation and resistance to damage parameters which account for the influence of thermal and mechanical properties, geometry, and temperature range, while distinguishing between the heating and cooling cases. The resistance to fracture initiation parameter ɸs is the maximum rate at which a shape can be heated or cooled through a specified temperature range without causing fracture. The damage resistance parameter Rd is expressed as the ratio of surface energy per unit area to the elastic strain energy available for crack propagation. Both parameters can be quickly estimated for arbitrary conditions with the aid of tabulated solutions for the maximum principal tensile stress and total strain energy
Thermoelastic analyses were used to interpret published results of a variety of thermal shock experiments. Thermal conditions associated with water quenching, radiative furnace heating, gas burners, and controlled heating were simulated using appropriate analytical solutions. Finite element analysis was used to compute maximum principal tensile stresses and elastic strain energy. A simple procedure was developed to invert the stress solution and thereby determine the instant of fracture. Good agreement between thermoelastic predictions and published experimental results with regard to strength retained versus thermal shock relationships, location of fracture, and safe heating rates provided justification for a thermoelastic approach to the thermal shock.

De acordo com Pastalan (1990) “Aging in place refers to being able to remain in one’s current residence even when faced with increasing need for support because of life changes, such as declining health, widowhood, or loss of income” (p.1).

▼ The potato tuberworm, (Phthorimaea operculella Zell.) is the most serious of all potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) pests worldwide (Fenemore 1988; Saur 2004; Kroschel 1995). It also goes by older synonyms, Bryotropha solanella, and Gelechia solanella (Meyrick, 1885). In tobacco, the insect is known as the tobacco splitworm, and can be found in most tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. It was first detected in the U.S. in 1856 in California (Graf 1917).
Biology
The tobacco splitworm is an oliphagous insect confined to species in the family Solanaceae, including both cultivated and feral plants (Broodryk, 1971, Fenemore 1988). The cash crops attacked by P. operculella include Solanum tuberosum, Nicotiana tabacum, Solanum melongena, and Solanum lycopersicum (Fenemore, 1988), while some of its weed host species include Solanum dulcamara, S. rostratum, and Datura stramonium (Potato Association, 2008). The moth is distinguished from other solanaceous-feeding moths by a costal hairpencil on the hind wings of the male (Meyrick, 1885).
Females lay 60-200 eggs in as little as four days, and eggs hatch within three to six days. Eggs are typically laid on green foliage in potato, as larvae prefer to be leaf and stem miners rather than tuber miners, but can be laid in soil or on stems (Potato Assn, 2008). Larvae will pupate in a variety of sites, including walls, windows, screens, plant debris, leaves, soil, ect. (Ferro 1993). Adults usually emerge within a week. In New Zealand, the pupal stage overwinters (Potato Assn, 2008). In the Pacific Northwest, it is possible that all stages but the adult are able to overwinter, although the overwintering behavior is not understood as well in the United States (Potato Assn 2008).
Pest Status
As a pest of potatoes, the tobacco splitworm not only does minor to moderate damage in the field through larval leaf mining, but can cause severe crop loss in stored potatoes through larval tuber mining (Das 1995). There is zero tolerance for tuberworm in fresh potatoes (Potato Assn 2008). Control methods in potatoes are mostly cultural, such as deep planting, sealing soil cracks, covering tubers with soil, eliminating waste products and maintaining a clean environment, as well as keeping a close eye on stored product (Ali 1993; Coll et al. 2000; Hanafi 1999; Potato Assn 2008). Other practices include using insecticides, mass trapping with pheromone traps, microbial control through the PoGV Granulosis Virus (Baculoviridae) and the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, and biological control through the Braconid wasps Apantelels subandinus and Braconi greeni, and the Encyrtid egg parasitoid wasp Copidosoma koehleri (Baggen 1998; Hanafi 1999; Mohammed et al. 2000).
Little is known about Phthorimaea operculella as a tobacco pest since most previous research has been in the context of its status as a potato pest. In tobacco, P. operculella is a leaf miner, producing translucent patch mines in tobacco leaves, reducing the value of the leaves. Frass ensnared in these mines also contaminates harvested…

▼ This is a cross sectional study aimed at establishing prevalence and factors associated with casual sex engagement among military personnel in the Defence Force.
The general objective of the study was to identify factors associated with casual sexual intercourse among military personnel so as to develop ppropriate measures to address the problem and avert HIV and other sexually transmitted i ions. Specific objectives were to determine the prevalence of casual sex among military personnel;
examine the extent to which demographic factors such as age, education and marital status could influence casual sex among military personnel, a also establish any association between length and frequency of military operations; and engagement in casual sex.Data was collected quantitatively by administering a standard pre – tested questionnaire to each participant from a sample size of 341. A convenient sample was chosen from the six military camps in Lusaka. The sample size was calculated to ena 95% confidence. Results show that 46.0% of surveyed respondents engaged in pre/extramarital sexual activities.
There were significant relationships between responden participation in military operations(p = <0.001), marital status (p = 0.001) and engagement in pre/extramarital sex. There were no significant relationships between the respondent’s age, sex, education qualification, rank and engagement in pre/extramarital sex. Among the surveyed respondents, only 46.5% used condoms consistently with a non regular partner. It can be concluded from this study that the high prevalence of casual sex with multiplerelationships among military personnel carries the ris of HIV transmission. Contributing factors from the study are; long periods of absence from home on military duty; influence of alcohol, boredom and peer pressure. The Defence Force needs to play a more proactive role in HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. Personnel on deployment, in – and outside the country should be provided with the necessary awareness messages aimed at behaviour change and to guard against HIV infection.

▼ Taiwan's population structure is facing a huge change when the baby boomers gradually entering retirement age. This change leads to many social problems such as population structure and traditional thinking are changed. It has affected the lives of the elderly directly.
Taiwan is entering a lower birth rate and aging society. The traditional concept of "Rearing children for old age" has been broken. The care of the elderly is not only a family problem, but a social problem. The âreverse mortgage (RM)" provides a cash flow mechanism for the elderly who are house-owners but have no cash. The RM helps the elderly enjoy their later years in their own house.
In this study, we introduce the concept of the RM in the beginning. Secondly, we further investigated the experience of other countries which have started this program. Also, the problems we are going to face in Taiwan if we want to do this business. Besides, we do in-depth interviews base on these studies and Taiwan market. After analyzing and summarizing, we provide the feasible suggestions for helping proposal in order to help banks handle the business of the RM.
By doing this study, we find that there are five issues and 20 sub-problems we have to face if we want to do the RM business in Taiwan. These issues include risk, law, institution, culture and financial supervision.Based on these points of view. We summarized three conclusions and provide six recommendations. We hope these could help banks clarify these points quickly in order to enhance their willingness to open the RM business. Also, the government might read this study for reference. Finally, to achieve the purpose of increasing income for the elderly, reducing the financial burden to their children and maintaining living quality and dignity of the elderly.
