▼ This study utilizes Pierre Bourdieu's concept of
cultural and social
capital as a theoretical framework to understand student persistence. The research design is a mixed-methods approach, using data collected through the Social and
Cultural Capital Questionnaire and interviews with select survey participants. The sample includes seniors who entered college in the fall of 2008 and have persisted towards degree attainment. The selected research sites are small, religiously affiliated, private colleges located in the Southeast. A description of student experiences will be beneficial in reviewing each of the site's current retention efforts and developing plans for future students. Their experiences will show the effect, if any, a student's social and
cultural capital has on ability to persist. The final aim of this study is to make practical recommendations and contribute to the literature on the concept of
cultural capital as the framework for understanding student persistence on a college campus.

▼ How students perceive education influences their extracurricular engagement at university. In this study, I investigate how Malaysian students perceive the importance of a university education and how this influences their choices about extracurricular voluntary activities. Participants included 21 university students (aged 17-25 years old) studying at a university in East Malaysia. Data collection methods included questionnaires, visual data, semi-structured individual and focus group interviews. The findings reveal that while
cultural capital plays a significant role in influencing student perceptions of educational success, other forms of
capital are also highly valued in the education system. Academic excellence is emphasized, with families often investing in private tuition and other skills to achieve distinction thus giving students a perceived edge over their competitors. The results also show that social
capital has a significant influence on students’ involvement in extracurricular activities while at university. The social
capital embedded in friendships functioned as an investment strategy and participants relied on this
capital to sustain their interest in community service projects or club activities. They also relied heavily on social
capital resources embedded in kinship and religious institutions to obtain information and make decisions regarding future career plans and goals.

▼ Our high school students are worthy of a global
education embedded with a commitment to bringing them learning
experiences, which readily provide opportunities for building their
own human
capital potential through
cultural proficiency. These
students will need to cross
cultural boundaries as they attempt to
interface in a globalized world. They will need academic skills, as
well as a high level of
cultural proficiency to define their role
as employees and students in a globalized world. A qualitative
study was conducted to determine if high school students and their
teachers identify
cultural proficiency as a necessary component of
skills needed to find success in the twenty-first century. It
examined the evidence as to the existence of specific measures,
policies, and practices within a high school and its district in
order to determine if this was a priority in educating students
within this segment of skill formation. So while identifying the
value that students and their educators place on these critical
competencies and the level of measurement currently in place, this
study intends to serve as a guide for future organizational and
programming structure development for schools nationwide as they
work toward providing students the opportunities they need to be
ready to transition into a progressive global
society.

▼ This study has been undertaken to analyse the
potential of sport as
cultural capital in the South African Police
Service. There is a need to determine the role of sport in the SAPS
and its realisation as a
cultural capital and to also find out why
the SAPS does not fully realise sport as
Cultural Capital. The
study offers an understanding of aspects of law enforcement agency
sport,
cultural and social
capital, social cohesion, the social
role of sport, sport governance, political power and struggle and
sport policy in the SAPS.
A review of relevant literature dealing
with sport in the law enforcement agencies,
cultural and social
capital and sport policy was carried out. The sources to gather
information embody: books, magazines, articles, newspapers,
Government media reports, journals and information from the
internet.
Single stage sampling procedure was used as the
researcher has access to names in the population and can sample the
people or other elements directly (Creswell, 2009). A schedule of
questions served as the main data collection tool, and it was
piloted on ten per cent of the members of the population who did
not serve in the final sample of respondents. This exercise
assisted in validating the questions. The qualitative study was
done with face-to-face semi-structured interviews to get the views
of SAPS sport participants relating to SAPS sport. The questions
schedule was used to conduct face-to-face interviews to collect
data analysed using Atlas ti.
SAPS sport contributes towards the
accrual of
cultural capital within the South African Police
Service, but with an exception of language culture, embodied
cultural capital and objectified
cultural capital. The study
concludes that workplace sport has a positive influence on
employees' performance and it contributes significantly towards the
high level of employees' commitment to the organisation.
Police
officers should be given opportunities to be involved in sport and
recreation activities within the working environment. SAPS should
ensure that proper resources are provided and are made easily
accessible to enable employees to participate in sport regardless
of rank. All police personnel should be exposed to opportunities
that are there because of participation in sport in the work
environment. SAPS top management should give full support to all
members who are interested in participating in sport because of the
benefits that are accrued when taking part in sport. Proper sport
structures should be put in place at all levels of SAPS sphere of
operations so that there should not be communication breakdown in
relation to sport issues.

▼ The main research problem in this study was to identify a framework that can be utilised for the integration of skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates (SIEs) into Qatari organisations. The main research problem gave rise to six sub-problems that were addressed through the following actions: A literature study was conducted to explore what the existing literature revealed about facilitating successful expatriate integration. In particular, the theoretical guidelines for expatriate recruitment and selection, orientation and cross-cultural integration were presented and discussed. Special attention was given to community embeddedness. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten members from the sample group. These were undertaken to obtain their views on the expectations that their organisations had of them upon their arrival in Qatar, as well as on what they felt made it easy or difficult for them to adjust. Subsequently, a structured survey questionnaire was developed using the theoretical guidelines from the literature review and the insights gained from the semi-structured interviews. The survey was conducted in Qatar and administered to 102 skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates from diverse backgrounds and three work sectors, namely: healthcare, education and aviation. The final sample size was 94 due to eight questionnaires not being completed properly. The results from the empirical study revealed a gap between theoretical guidelines/ best practices and the recruitment and selection, orientation and cross-cultural integration practices at the respondents’ organisations. The knowledge gained from the existing literature and from the quantitative and qualitative results of the empirical study were combined and developed into a framework for the integration of skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates into Qatari organisations (refer to Table 5.35). Areas that were identified for improvement related to issues such as the need for Qatari organisations to: provide SIEs with more comprehensive information regarding the role that they will play as knowledge workers with regard to the development/training of Qatari nationals; implement a more comprehensive recruitment, selection and orientation process, and implement a more robust set of strategies to enhance the cross-cultural integration of their expatriate workers. Globalisation has fuelled organisations and countries towards building and/or strengthening knowledge-based economies. However in order to build competitive, knowledge-based economies, organisations and countries require skilled/professional workers. Skilled/professional self-initiated expatriates can provide Qatar with a pipeline of knowledge workers to support the growth of their emerging knowledge-based economy. As such, a framework that will enhance the integration of self-initiated expatriates into Qatari organisations is of paramount importance, specifically with regard to fostering performance excellence, satisfaction and community embeddedness within the Qatari work…

profundos significados.

▼ This study explores how minority community college students who participated in in a structured science research program, perceived the program???s effectiveness in trying to mitigate the unique challenges they face as minorities pursuing science careers. Through qualitative interviews with a convenience sample of six, the researcher sought to understand from the student???s standpoint how/if participation in the program helped mitigate the challenges they faced and continue to face as minorities pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees, both in and outside of the classroom. Guided by Tinto???s retention model (1975) and Bourdieu???s (1977) concept of
cultural capital, this study attempts to elucidate how institutional support affects students??? intention to persist, sense of belonging, identity, and ability to negotiate the distinct set of challenges they face as minority students. To this end, the researcher hopes to elicit findings that can guide institutions in their effort to recruit, retain, and graduate greater numbers of minority STEM majors.

▼ In this thesis, I investigate the
relationship between
cultural capital and school engagement.
Cultural capital has been investigated in its relation to academic
achievement and attainment, with the ultimate finding that it has
little direct causal effect on student success. A lack of school
engagement has been determined to be a significant contributor to
high school dropout. While
cultural capital researchers have found
differences in classroom behaviors related to levels of
cultural
capital and socioeconomic background, few have examined these
differences in relation to attachment or engagement with schooling.
In addition, while some researchers have begun to examine
engagement as an educational outcome, none have examined whether
culture may influence engagement. To this end, I investigate the
relationship between
cultural capital and school engagement, as
well as the associations among
cultural capital, engagement, and
high school dropout. I find that, as predicted,
cultural capital is
significantly associated with school engagement. I also find that
cultural capital is significantly associated with high school
completion, with and without controlling for engagement. Consistent
with previous work, lower engagement is significantly associated
with high school dropout. I also run several analyses to
investigate these relationships, with findings pointing toward the
importance of
cultural capital during early development, reading,
and student excitement in school as key predictors of continued
schooling success (or failure). I conclude with a discussion of
limitations of the current study and promising avenues for further
investigation.

▼ After-School Martial Arts utilizes mixed methods to further our understanding of (a) how martial arts became an established after-school activity for elementary school children, (b) how parents and participants perceive the value of martial arts, and (c) whether sustained participation in martial arts is associated with academic gains. I begin with a historical case study that examines how parents came to see martial arts as one of the viable after-school activities for their elementary school age children. Next, I employed qualitative observations and in-depth interviewing techniques to learn more about what parents and participants perceived as attractive in marital arts programs and any connection to educational success. Finally, I used quantitative methods and a nationally-representative data set to explore the relation between sustained martial arts participation and improved test scores of U.S. elementary school children (from kindergarten through fifth grade). The central findings of my dissertation are three-fold. First, parental interest in martial arts for their children dovetailed with the growing integration of the practice into U.S. culture along with the marketing of multiple benefits of participation to parents. Second, parents and participants today perceive multiple benefits of participation, including (but not limited to) enhanced academic performance. Third, my quantitative findings did not lend strong support for academic benefits of any martial arts participation, but I uncovered some evidence that sustained participation was associated with increased reading scores.

▼ This thesis investigates the increased interest being shown by Australian universities and their business faculties in the development of employability skills for students. Many universities have demonstrated their commitment to translating such interest into practice by elaborating lists of graduate attributes to enable the development of generic skills and by encouraging their staff to adopt specific pedagogical tools for such ends. This approach is informed by the assumption that the acquisition and transferability of such skills enhance students human
capital and, therefore, their employability. This thesis aims to identify the limitations of this perspective and to present a different approach that will enable a critical examination of the notions of skill acquisition and transferability. This thesis draws particular attention to the use of group assignments in the university classroom, which have been assumed to develop students teamwork skills. To overcome definitional problems regarding the nature and characteristics of teamwork skills, this thesis draws upon three different sets of scholarship: employability, cooperative learning and teamwork. The use of in-depth interviews with three key stakeholders in the employability debate students, academics and alumni throws light on their experiences and perceptions. This triangulation is of particular importance as staff and alumni have been traditionally ignored in employability research. This approach can enhance our understanding of teamwork skill acquisition in the university classroom through group assignments, makes it possible to draw conclusions regarding the appropriateness of this tool for the development of teamwork skills and can illuminate the understated complexities surrounding skill transferability from this context to the workplace. The theoretical framework employed for this investigation is based on Bourdieu's notions of field, doxa, habitus and
cultural capital. These concepts emphasise social context and they help to tease out the interstices between technical and social skills. This framework also provides a basis on which to acknowledge the roles of the three key stakeholders. Finally, the conceptual framework elaborated and applied by this thesis provides a way of overcoming the assumption that acquisition and transfer of skills is neutral and a result of objective ability, which informs the human
capital perspective.

▼ Wellbeing is an increasingly important topic of schooling policy and research internationally. There is growing awareness that many young people experience challenges to their wellbeing during their schooling years. Supporting student wellbeing is a stated goal of Australian education policy and is embedded in the Australian Curriculum.
While research focusing on wellbeing has extended understandings of its physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual aspects, cultural aspects of wellbeing remain underexplored. The very term culture is one that has various and contested meanings across an array of research disciplines. In educational research, potential convergences between culture (variously conceptualised) and wellbeing, and their role in learning are being realised.
This study contributes to this emerging area by exploring educators’ perceptions and practices of cultural wellbeing in classroom communities. Three research questions framed the inquiry: (i) What are educators’ perceptions of cultural wellbeing? (ii) How do educators support cultural wellbeing in classroom communities? and (iii) What might a typology of cultural wellbeing look like?
The research integrated constructivist grounded theory methodology with situational analysis to explore a multiplicity of interpretations of cultural wellbeing, while also interrogating complex power relations that the concept of cultural wellbeing surfaced. The primary data source for the study was a series of interviews with 15 educators from schools across a range of socio-economic settings.
The findings revealed that educators constructed varied and multiple meanings of cultural wellbeing which were informed by fluid interpretations of culture. This thesis reveals that educators perceived that cultural wellbeing related to students’ sense of connection to school, to people, places and cultures and that educators perceived they supported cultural wellbeing through enabling such connections to form.
Three prominent interpretations of culture were evident in the educators’ accounts and became the basis for a typology of cultural wellbeing which was produced within the study and employed for analysing the multiple ways in which educators’ cultural locations informed their perceptions of cultural wellbeing. The three components of the typology of cultural wellbeing related to (i) school culture, or the ways of life in the school, (ii) processes of recognition, and (iii) cultural participation and production.
Considering educators’ perceptions of cultural wellbeing in the context of schooling in Australia reveals the many ways that schools continue to reproduce social and cultural inequalities. This occurs through the unequal access to forms of capital that educators in high and low socio-economic locations have for supporting students’ cultural wellbeing. Inequalities are also reproduced through the reinscribing of dominant mainstream culture within schools. Schooling is concerned with broad goals of increasing equity and this thesis troubles school cultures,…

▼ This thesis seeks to explore and understand the appointment process of first-time FTSE 100 NEDs. It has been widely acknowledged for over three decades that the appointment process of NEDs is an opaque process involving a homogeneous group of people in an ‘old boys’ network. Corporate governance reforms recommend a formal and transparent appointment process which taps into a wider pool of talent. Companies comply with these recommendations yet there has been scant change in the composition of corporate boards.
The pilot study consisted of nine interviews with the main stakeholders in the appointment process of a NED, namely Chairman, Executive Search Firms and NEDs. Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed that reputational capital was the basis on which a first-time NED appointment was made after the Chairman had carried out an extensive vetting process to establish the fit of the individual. The main study, based on 15 first-time FTSE 100 NED interviews, sought to understand reputational capital, its constituent parts and how individuals developed it. Further, it sought to explore how an individual’s fit for a NED was established. The analysis revealed that the reputational capital of an appointed NED was a blend of sufficient levels of human, social and cultural capital which had been communicated to the Chairman and other members of the corporate elite. A first-time NED, in gaining a foothold on a corporate board was also entitled to membership of the corporate elite. As reputational capital drives success of directors in the corporate elite, new individuals needed to fit with the norms and values appropriate for membership and carry no reputational risk for existing members particularly the Chairman.
This research offers three main contributions to the literature. Firstly, at a theoretical level it extends the concept of board capital to include cultural capital in addition to human and social capital. Secondly, it proposes a conceptual framework which demonstrates how an individual builds reputational capital over the course of a career to secure fit for a first- time NED, as a position in the corporate elite. The framework clarifies our understanding of reputational capital as a combination of human, social and cultural capital in a unique blend of board capital. This board capital is communicated through reputation building activities to members of the corporate elite. Thirdly, at an empirical level it provides an understanding of the FTSE 100 NED appointment process.

▼ The practice of parent-initiated school choice in China is characterized by the involvement of substantial amounts of money, various forms of capital, the explicit government policy of banning the practice in words but accommodating it in deeds. This research investigates the school choice situation in three middle schools in Nanning, China. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of the forms of capital and cultural and social reproduction and Brown’s Positional Conflict Theory, this thesis argues that the use of cultural, social and economic capital is widespread in the school choice process. With more capital of various types available, middle class families are at a competitive advantage compared to their working class counterparts in the current struggle to gain a place in a good school. The resources of the former families enable their children to gain more cultural capital through extracurricular enrichment activities, exercise more social capital through existing guanxi1 networks and focus more economic capital with which to pay large sums for choice fees, all of which result in the greater chances of entering a desired school. The change of the school admission policy since the mid-1990s from universal entrance examination for junior middle schools to the present school place assignment by proximity has resulted in an unintentional shift from meritocracy to “parentocracy”2. School choice effectively closes out opportunities for quality education for working class families, because they lack the cultural, social and economic capital that is necessary to “work the system”. As a result, school choice tends to insure the intergenerational transmission of existing social classes and to decrease the possibility of upward mobility for the next generation. 1 A network of contacts which an individual may draw upon to secure resources or advantage in the course of social life (see 4.1.2 for detail). 2 See Brown (1990).

The health hut model in Senegal is the result of a socio-historical process as well as the health policy evolution. It underpins the health pyramid and is integrated into the health system. Paradoxically, communities struggle…

▼ Symbolized as a kind of life style, the
cultural tourism became an integral part of consumer society in modern world. Most nation governments or regional organizers have renewed these faces of
cultural commodity through their trick of spectacle which was used to be attracting and promoting benefits of
cultural tourism. Taiwan government has begun a discussion of developing new policy for the repertory since 2008, even though, there were various problems in the promoting process, and they could be deemed as an explorative period. Therefore we should research these experiences for governmentâs reform and provide them to relevant performing groups, not only for correcting misconceptions but also for providing adequate examples of repertory for futureâs development.
Furthermore, we have to ask three questions about the repertory phenomenon: (1) How can the repertory molds be established with
cultural spectacle and become an eidetic symbolization of
cultural tourism? (2) Standing at the position of performance arts group, what dose they need the conditions of repertory? How can we improve the circumstance and reality in promoting it with the benefits of
cultural tourism? (3) What the role of government, company or arts groups should be in any operative situation of repertory? Since these questions are main issues in this research, so it follows the research structure with qualitative method, we have gathered material through archive research and have made in-depth interviews. By that we also try to exposit some theories for expounding the characteristics of
cultural capital and
cultural spectacle, and applying them to discuss the phenomenon of
cultural tourism of the consumer society. Then, we make a new clarification of used definitions of repertory that let us find out the core difference between âtourist programs as repertoryâ and âclassical program as repertoryâ. With the experience of repertory policy of
cultural tourism in Taiwan, we have probed the commodities of
cultural tourism to what the conditions repertory should be.
In the conclusion, we ought to say that performance arts should not be completed if the repertory was taken by them independently. The government has to provide the grants for guaranties of adequate performing spaces and always gives the respects of autonomy and independence to the public affair of arts, combines diversities and distributes resources with local government, and finally it can supply a high quality circumstance to create any actual repertory in Taiwan.

▼ Balikbayan is a Filipino term used to describe Filipinos who have left the homeland, and have returned for temporary visits. Due to the large economic contribution of balikbayans in the past, the Philippine state has hailed those who occupy this status as Heroes of the Nation. In the recent years, balikbayans have been targeted by real estate development companies as sources of
capital due to the widely held belief by Filipinos that balikbayans are very wealthy. Many development companies specifically look to target balikbayans to purchase luxury enclave development properties in the Philippines as investment properties. Using data that I had gathered from my fieldwork in the Philippines in the summer of 2014, I will examine what role these luxury properties and consumer consumption have in displaying the balikbayan identity, why it is such a desired
subject position by Filipinos, and the discrepancies between the state definition of balikbayan, versus on the ground definition of balikbayan.

▼ This research proposes understanding the influences that
cultural and social capitals exert on the immigrant entrepreneurship process of individuals who decided to move to a nation that is economically and culturally different from their home countries. Immigration is an increasingly phenomenon that affects several countries around the world, some of them having their economies heavily related to this group of people. When trying to find a job placement in the new market, most immigrants face difficulties such as language barriers, taste discrimination and lack of recognition of their accumulated capitals. A common option to reduce such challenges is pursuing entrepreneurship, which is usually related to fields that possess less influence of the aforementioned barriers, and that do not require much specific knowledge. Nevertheless, immigrant entrepreneurship has important differences when being compared to other types of entrepreneurship, and this fact is usually due to
cultural and social aspects. In this context, it is inquired: “how does both the
cultural and social capitals linked to the entrepreneur's country of origin relate to his/her opportunities to undertake and sustain an enterprise of the culinary field in a culturally and economically distinct country?”. In order to address this inquiry, four immigrant restaurant owners were interviewed. Two of them immigrated to England, coming from Latin American underdeveloped countries, while the other two immigrated to Brazil, coming from European developed nations. The semistructured interview script had 16 questions formulated according to Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of
cultural and social capitals, aiming at qualitatively understanding in what consisted these two types of capitals of each entrepreneur, as well as understanding how they related to each moment of their individual entrepreneurial journeys. The interviews were conducted in person in both cities of London and Florianópolis, during the first semester of 2016. The results show that all of the immigrant entrepreneurs faced some type of
cultural shock and discrimination during their entrepreneurship processes, which is most evident in the Latin entrepreneurs. Regarding the influence of their
cultural capitals, family influences, accumulated knowledge and professional experiences greatly influenced their entrepreneurship process, and the entrepreneurs who possessed the higher amount of accumulated and recognized
cultural capital faced far less difficulties as immigrant entrepreneurs. When talking about their social capitals, the entrepreneurs mostly relied on their social connections with people born in their home countries or in nations more culturally similar to their own. These relations, however, were of different natures between the Latin and European immigrants. The social
capital that mostly influenced the Latin entrepreneurs consisted on their families and Latin immigrant friends, who faced similar obstacles as they did. On the other hand, the social
capital the European entrepreneurs relied during…

▼ Most Brazilian students are segregated according to the hierarchy of types of schools. Normally
public schools welcome the children of families without economic and
cultural capital in the Pierre
Bourdieu sense and lack adequate infrastructure, while well-equipped and well-equipped private
schools are the choice of families holding economic and
cultural capital to children. In fact, private
schools are the best students to join the most prestigious courses of Brazilian universities. However,
there are Federal Institutes that offer integrated secondary education articulated with technical
education and that are public schools with recognized quality that does not resemble the traditional
pattern of public school in Brazil. By law, these Institutes reserve a quota of 50% of places for
children of low-income families, and, within that, a sub-quota for minorities. Vacancies for the other
50%, free competition, are mostly filled by students from private schools. A rare example of a public
school where it is possible to interact with families with such distinct economic and social
capital as
to better represent the Brazilian social reality. This thesis presents a study developed at the Federal
Institute in the state of Rio Grande do Norte on the central campus of the city of Natal, where,
among other objectives, the aim was to identify the effects of economic, social and
cultural capital
on students' school success. It was selected the class with 2012 entrance of the technical course of
administration for the case study, with that, was followed by three academic years (2013, 2014 and
2015), using, as data collection techniques, observation in Classroom and extra-classroom,
semistructured interview to students and teachers, and statistical analysis of students' academic
performance data. The results showed the effects on the school performance of the different forms
of
capital accumulated by the students, as well as on the teaching practices, both influencing
differently the learning of the quota students and non-quota students. The "school effect" and the
"peer effect" were important for understanding the object of study and for a compound habitus.

capital cultural, gosto e campo).

▼ The fertility transition in Brazil, as in other Latin American countries, presented a sharp
and rapid decline and differences between the groups with better and worse
socioeconomic conditions. Among the population groups with lower socioeconomic
situations in Brazil include indigenous peoples, which are highlighted by the highest
levels of fertility in comparison with non-Indians. However, between 1991 and 2000,
women who declared themselves indigenous to the respective population census was
classified as a significant reduction in fertility levels, giving evidence that these
populations accompanying the decline in fertility that has occurred in the country. Thus,
this study aims to estimate the fertility of indigenous women in Brazil in 2010, in the
light of their
cultural and economic
capital profiles. Therefore, we used micro data of
Census 2010 to apply the method Grade of Membership (GoM) to construct a typology
of indigenous women taking into consideration the dimensions: demographic,
cultural
and economic
capital and household characteristics. Additionally, we estimated the
fertility levels obtained for each of the profiles, using the indirect technique Brass. The
typology of indigenous women found in this work revealed three pure profiles: the first
women profiled on "
capital traditionally indian", which have characteristics of a
indigenous population, practicing their traditions and live in hollow or tents, for
example. At the other extreme profile met indigenous women living in urban areas,
which in the context of indigenous peoples, was classified as the highest levels of
education and household income, the profile which is known as "
capital urbanized ". A
third profile entitled "
capital intermediary", inhabitants rural women with intermediate
education level and household income, and living in households without public
sanitation services. The results found for each profile fertility level was found: A Total
Fertility Rate of 5.9 children on average per woman for the profile with
capital
traditionally indian, the
capital of which has distance from the dominant
capital (not -
indígena) and corresponding to 13.9% of indigenous women; the profile of women with
capital intermediary, also was classified as a high level of fertility (5.5 children), even
though it has a smaller representative in the group of indigenous women (6.3%), make
up a group that lacks more attention by government institutions. But the profile of
women with
capital urbanized, whose representative corresponds to 43.9%, reached a
lower level than the national average (3.9 children) for this population segment,
showing a very close behavior to the surrounding society. Finally, the study shows the
importance of thinking reproductive health policies sensitive to
cultural aspects to
different groups of indigenous women found.

▼ Using inspirational sources for generating ideas and
stimulating productivity in designing is a significant stage in the
design process that impacts designing and design outcomes. Another
important aspect during designing is the role of influence on the
designer as they work through design projects. This research
explores how the adaptations of inspirational sources manifest
during the early phase of textile designing. Specifically, it
examines how inspirational sources of biological specimens are
adapted in designing, with one group of designers using actual
biological specimens and the other group using representations of
the specimens in the form of photographs. This research attempts to
understand the adaptation of inspirational sources and to
understand how adaptations occur when sources are presented
differently. It also seeks to acknowledge the role of influence in
the design process and to explain how it differs from
inspiration.

▼ The impact of neo-liberalism on education policy
and practice in England means that assessment at GCSE is higher
stakes than ever, not just for the students, for whom it determines
access to courses and jobs, but for teachers and schools under
ever-increasing pressure to meet performance targets. Given the
published evidence regarding the strong relationship between family
background, academic achievement and future income, this research
considers how the GCSE English assessment contributes to the
maintenance of the status quo with regards to advantage and
disadvantage. The details of the assessments, the structures of the
assessment systems as well as the impact of those systems on
schools, teachers and students are matters of policy, hence this
research is within the tradition of policy scholarship. In it I set
out to engage with and understand policy, and to reveal its impacts
through the lens of Bourdieusian thinking. I use interview data
from students, teachers and examiners as well as documentary
analysis of examination papers and mark schemes in order to give
voice to those with lived experiences of the assessment and to
explore the case of GCSE English assessment from multiple
perspectives. I use the data to examine the ways in which the
assessment privileges a culturally specific form of English in a
way that necessarily includes and excludes particular groups of
students. I reveal how the assessment advantages students with wide
world knowledge and privileges the ability to instinctively access
formal discourse. Through examining the ways in which teachers,
students and examiners conceptualise English GCSE I reveal the
relationships between assessment, curriculum and classroom practice
and thus uncover the impacts that policy is having on teaching and
learning and on teachers and students. As a result I recommend
changes in policy as well as in teaching and assessment practices:
I recommend that awarding organisations review their procedures to
ensure that a greater range of voices informs assessment
procedures; I recommend a shift in emphasis in the GCSE English
assessment to focus on an understanding of language and the
relationships between discourse and power; I recommend that
teachers find ways within the classroom to enable students to use
their funds of knowledge; and finally, regarding policy, I
recommend an open conversation about what is taught, assessed and
measured and for what purposes.

▼ Recently, there have been a string of cases where students abide by the dress code yet school officials still deem them as dress code violators. To address this issue, I use theories on the hidden curriculum and
cultural capital to examine how teachers enforce the dress code and what informs their decisions. Interviews with 19 teachers at two different high schools in a racially diverse school district revealed that teachers perform the roles of both the educator and the disciplinarian. However, their ability to regulate students are limited by the administration. Teachers rationalize their actions under the frameworks of respectability and professionalism. These frameworks draw upon dominant understandings of race, gender, class, sexuality, and embodiment. When teachers regulate students as a result of a dress code violation, female students and students of color are given lessons on respectability and professionalism. This study shows that teachers’ practices of regulation help reify the continuation of racial, gendered, and classed lines in high schools. Teachers adhere to anti-black middle class heteronormative values and attempt to instill those values in their students through the enforcement of said dress code. This is particularly harmful to marginalized groups in the educational system as these messages replicate androcentric, anti-black, middle class values.

▼ This study examines how full-time Christian employees perceive their faith as an advantage or disadvantage in the workplace. I frame these perceptions in two ways: religious
cultural capital which reflects employees' religious dispositions and socialization; religion as
cultural toolkit which amplifies their experience of workplace as culturally unsettled. Interview findings from 63 full-time suggest that religious disposition and socialization enhance psychological coping, improved work relationships, and work performance. Also, the most commonly perceived challenges to their faith including the mixed expectations within religious tolerance policies, anti-Christian hostility, higher ethical and civic expectation of Christians, and heteronormative religious dissonance reflected their perceptions of workplace as culturally unsettled. Bonding with other fellow Christian colleagues or evangelizing others suggest serve as responses or tools which help them to make sense of contemporary workplace culture.

▼ One of
cultural sociology’s most important
contributions to the study of social inequality has been the
explication of the role that the possession of
cultural resources
plays in the ordering of society and social groups. To investigate
the relationship between the expression of aesthetic tastes and
symbolic exclusion, I analyze original data that measure variation
in respondents’ propensity to change their expressed taste about a
particular
cultural object given information about that object’s
typical fans. I find that respondents were likely to change their
opinion to approximate the taste expression of a group of
high-status others, but did not change their opinion when told the
taste of a group of low-status others, except in the case of
low-status persons being told that a group of low-status persons
taste for the object was negative, in which case low-status
respondents (but not high-status respondents) reacted by giving a
more positive evaluation. I also analyze respondents’ perception of
solidarity with the groups they were told about, and find that
differences in taste between respondents and the group are a
stronger predictor of the perception of social distance than were
differences in status (measured by education and occupation).
Finally, with regard to perceptions of social distance, I find that
the possession of

▼ This study focuses on the parental involvement among Eastern European immigrant parents of elementary school students in Ontario. Immigrant parents are shaped by their own educational experiences in home countries and face particular challenges to be involved in the education of their children who attend schools in the immigrant-receiving nations due to language barriers and low familiarity with the new school system. I collected my data through interviews with parents and the analysis of parental involvement documents in Ontario. The analysis was informed by the concepts of social and
cultural capital developed by Pierre Bourdieu. I found that Eastern European immigrant parents see their role supporting children mainly in the home by emphasizing academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Interviewed parents grew up in countries with strict boundaries between school and family, as a result they often do not see volunteering and taking part in decision making in Ontario schools as meaningful for them. Although most parents possess high levels of
cultural capital there was a variation in the amount of social
capital available to immigrant parents. Those who managed to recreate rich social networks in the new country communicated with teachers more successfully and were satisfied with school. The critical analysis of policy documents showed that despite the shift towards acknowledging different types of involvement more value is still given to school-based activities, which makes the immigrant parental involvement less visible. The results of the study will enable educators and policy makers to pay more nuanced attention to the involvement among immigrant parents for better achievement and well-being of all children in Ontario classrooms.
