This dissertation provides insight into consumers’ use of credit cards. Chapter 2 presents a simple life-cycle model that highlights how time inconsistency, naiveté and financial literacy influence consumers’ lifetime consumption paths. The model demonstrates how payment mechanisms that decouple payment and consumption incline consumers to give into behavioral influences. It first displays how credit cards tempt consumers with time inconsistent preferences to overspend early on in life. It then uses a mental accounting framework to show that consumers who overlook the cost of credit or do not consider their long-term financial well-being exhaust their available credit.Chapter 3 takes a closer look at consumers’ perceptions of the cost of credit. While several studies conclude that consumers with low levels of financial literacy are more likely to engage in high cost borrowing, other studies indicate that financial literacy is positively related to credit card debt or that it has no impact on credit card debt. All of these studies measure financial literacy as the ability to answer multiple choice questions regarding interest rates, minimum payments and credit terms. However, these questions do not directly gauge if consumers perceive credit cards as costly. This chapter contributes to the literature by showing that consumers who hold more credit card debt perceive cards as a costly payment mechanism. However, I find limited evidence that consumers who perceive credit cards as costly respond by paying down on their balances. Instead, consumers who adopt additional credit cards make use of the increase in credit.Chapter 4 investigates the “credit card debt puzzle.” Simultaneously holding high cost credit card debt and liquid assets is puzzling given the significant difference between interest rates. However, this behavior is common –about 31% of households in the 2016 Survey of Consumer Finances. The cost of co-holding may be justified if consumers anticipate future restrictions in credit or if they need to maintain liquidity. Other existing explanations for co-holding include impulsive spending and low financial literacy. Using a Coarsened Exact Matching method, we find that overconfident consumers are 20%-40% more likely to co-hold credit card debt and liquid assets.

▼ The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the factors associated with the debt accumulation of students who are currently enrolled in graduate school at a public research university in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Factors were examined through the following four key research questions: (a) How much self-reported debt do graduate students accumulate during their undergraduate education? (b) What financial decision making factors uniquely contribute to total undergraduate debt accumulation as self-reported by graduate students? (c) What life impacting factors uniquely contribute to total undergraduate debt accumulation as self- reported by graduate students? and (d) What key demographic factors are associated with total undergraduate debt accumulation? A 17-question on-line survey, was administered to 3,852 students. The survey included demographic information and the following: overall debt, federal student loan debt, and credit card debt levels. To investigate whether low, medium, and high debt levels differ with attitudes towards using credit cards, federal loans, private loans, and loans for nonacademic expenses, individual Chi-Square tests were conducted. The research discovered that there was a relationship between attitudes towards: using credit cards (χ2=163.420, df = 8, N=772, p < .001), federal loans (χ2=290.741, df= 8, N=772, p < .001), and loans for nonacademic purposes (χ2=163.420, df = 8, N=772, p < .001) with overall debt levels. In addition, a relationship between debt level and academic major (χ2=21.447, df = 10, N=772, p <.018), and a relationship between debt level and age (χ2= 22.699, df = 2, N=772, p <.001), was also discovered. Multiple regression was conducted and the data analyzed indicated that there were three main factor associated to college debt levels, 17(1; Tuition and college cost), 17(5; Lack of support from my family) and 17(10; Not having good financial /money management skills). The combination of these variables to predict total debt was statistically significant, F (3,709) = 40.20, p < .001. Results of the current study contribute to the previous literature on student debt. Recommendations for future research and survey modifications were discussed. ▼ Vulnerable consumers are likely to fall victim to negative marketplace outcomes due to the secondary effects of marketing practices. In particular, credit card targeting directed towards young people elicits ethical criticisms because of the perceived vulnerability of the target segment, the targeting efforts that are deemed more predatory than informative, and the stigmatising protectionist policies that limit the youths’ financial freedom. Vulnerable consumers are often overlooked in marketing considerations, leaving it to the public policy to intervene. This thesis aims to show that vulnerability is a marketing problem as much as it is a public policy issue, by highlighting the social effects of unethical marketing directed towards vulnerable consumers. The study depicts how young people, supposedly representing the most educated segment of the population, come to experience vulnerability due to credit card misuse and indebtedness. In addition, the study introduces a new concept and measure of susceptibility to credit card misuse and indebtedness (SCCMI) to investigate the extent to which youths are influenced by credit card temptations, which affect their likelihood to experience negative credit card outcomes. This study examines youth vulnerability and susceptibility to credit card misuse and indebtedness in a cross-country context, as the issue of vulnerability and power imbalance is arguably more pressing in the international market. The sampling involves young (18-25 years) credit card users in Singapore, Malaysia and the UK. These countries represent different degrees of credit card issuance and consumer protection regulations, which affect the youths’ credit card attitude and behaviour. The first study utilises qualitative methodology to examine youth vulnerability to credit card misuse. Baker et al.’s (2005) situational framework of actual consumer vulnerability helps to identify relevant themes pertained to the youths’ experience of credit card misuse and indebtedness. The qualitative study also serves as an exploratory phase to the subsequent quantitative study. The qualitative results enhance the conceptualisation and measurement scale development of SCCMI measure. The study then tested the validity, reliability and parsimony of the SCCMI measure and its proposed antecedent and consequent factors across the Malaysian, Singaporean and UK country samples.Vulnerability and susceptibility assessments in this study yield theoretical, methodological and practical implications. Vulnerability analysis draws upon the internal characteristics and external conditions that both facilitate and impede such vulnerability. Meanwhile, assessment of susceptibility provides an analytical tool to foresee and pre-empt future vulnerability. ▼ This dissertation provides a history of the bank credit card infrastructure in the United States from 1952 to 2007 and outlines the bank management strategies, tactics, and philosophies that helped to transform the bank credit card into a tool for survival. The dissertation traces the commercial bank management strategies, tactics, and philosophies that guided the development of the bank credit card ‘infrastructure’ and were integral to the manufacturing of debt and a financial system that enabled the widespread distribution of precarious debt. The dissertation argues that the infrastructure that makes up the credit card is simultaneously, one, the technical creation of a payment platform; two, the creation of new ways of managing and planning in banking; and three, represents explicit efforts to alter the legal, social and economic conditions that banks and payment companies operated in. It examines how postwar military inspired corporate strategies guided the design, construction, and growth of the bank credit card associations responsible for the growth and development of the bank credit card ‘infrastructure.’ The dissertation claims that beginning in the mid-1960s, American commercial bankers utilized an ‘environmentality’ approach to management, that is, they used a variety of governance techniques and strategies to understand and deliberately attempt to alter their external environment, or those external elements not under the direct control or ownership of the bank, to ensure the bank credit card’s long-term survival and growth. This systematic or environmental approach to understanding a bank’s milieu provoked bank officers into taking pre-emptive measures to avoid, eliminate, or capitalize on the risks associated with these external variables. By detailing these banking strategies, pre-emptive actions, and their effects, the dissertation claims that the 2007-2008 global financial and economic crisis was not a mistake but rather a consequence of the manufacturing of debt. ▼ The level of university students' financial literacy has been discussed in Congress, opinion pieces in the media and the increasing level of student debt has been used to suggest their financial illiteracy. This study investigated the financial literacy of graduating university seniors by comparing their financial literacy level with their debt level. The difference in financial literacy levels of business majors, minors and non-business majors was assessed. The relationship between graduating university seniors' financial literacy level and their credit card and student loan debt was also reviewed. Gender, employment status, ethnicity, family income and college major were similarly examined to see if they were predictors of financial literacy levels and debt levels. Although financial literacy is frequently discussed in the national arena there is no clear definition of financial literacy; this ambiguity has led to multiple definitions. In this study, financial literacy was defined as "an individual's ability to obtain, understand, and evaluate the relevant information necessary to make decisions with an awareness of the likely financial consequences" (Mason & Wilson, 2000). The Jump$tart questionnaire (Mandell, 2004) was used to calculate participants' financial literacy level. The study found that the majority of the students had a high level of financial literacy with an average financial literacy score of 72.56% and with students majoring in business performing significantly better than non-business students. The use of debt level as an indicator of financial literacy level was found to be incorrect. No relationship was identified between financial literacy level and credit card debt or student loan debt. The study also found that demographic factors could not be used to predict financial literacy level and debt level. It was found that the majority of participants learned about managing money either on their own or at home from family members. More than half of the participants expressed an interest in taking a personal finance class but less than 20% were aware that this course was offered at their university. More effective methods are recommended to ensure that students become more aware such courses being offered on campus.
