▼ We explore search methods for finding and removing members of a large population of mobile particles in different environments. We begin by simulating the movement of individual swarm members biased by a map image with four search patterns and find that simulation duration affects the results. We then treat particle motion as a Markov process in an environment bounded with walls that retain a portion of the swarm and in an environment that attracts the particles into a normal distribution at the center of the space. We test six search patterns with several parameter variations. We show that a two-step greedy algorithm has the best performance in all cases but second best performance varies with the parameters of the swarm and the search.

▼ Inadequate research has examined the effect of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on health insurance status in the United States after its full implementation as data were released only recently. This study analyzes changes in health insurance status and its determinants before the ACA, after its partial implementation in 2010-2013, and after its full implementation in 2014 and 2015. Data from the 2009-2015 National Health Interview Surveys are used to address the research problem and test the hypotheses for this study. The trend analysis shows that the national health insurance rate increased significantly from 82.2 percent in 2009 to 89.4 percent in 2015. The results of logistic regression analysis reveal that age, gender, race, marital status, nativity, U.S. citizenship status, education, and poverty level influenced health insurance status consistently before and after the Affordable Care Act. While the effects of several predictors were either identical or similar across years, holding other variables constant those aged 26 or younger, the foreign-born, Asians, and other races had greater odds of getting health insurance after the ACA than they did before the ACA; however, the likelihood of gaining health insurance for Hispanics and people living under poverty increased slightly during the partial implementation of the ACA but somewhat decreased after the full implementation of the ACA starting in 2014. The findings help assess the effectiveness of the ACA and have significant implications for the pending healthcare reform.

▼ An area coverage control law in cooperation with reinforcement learning techniques is proposed for deploying multiple autonomous agents in a two-dimensional planar area. A scalar field characterizes the risk density in the area to be covered yielding nonuniform distribution of agents while providing optimal coverage. This problem has traditionally been addressed in the literature to date using locational optimization and gradient descent techniques, as well as proportional and proportional-derivative controllers. In most cases, agents' actuator energy required to drive them in optimal configurations in the workspace is not considered. Here the maximum coverage is achieved with minimum actuator energy required by each agent.
Similar to existing coverage control techniques, the proposed algorithm takes into consideration time-varying risk density. These density functions represent the probability of an event occurring (e.g., the presence of an intruding target) at a certain location or point in the workspace indicating where the agents should be located. To this end, a coverage control algorithm using reinforcement learning that moves the team of mobile agents so as to provide optimal coverage given the density functions as they evolve over time is being proposed. Area coverage is modeled using Centroidal Voronoi
Tessellation (CVT) governed by agents. Based on [1,2] and [3], the application of Centroidal Voronoi tessellation is extended to a dynamic changing harbour-like environment.
The proposed multi-agent area coverage control law in conjunction with reinforcement learning techniques is implemented in a distributed manner whereby the multi-agent team only need to access information from adjacent agents while simultaneously providing dynamic target surveillance for single and multiple targets and feedback control of the environment. This distributed approach describes how automatic flocking behaviour of a team of mobile agents can be achieved by leveraging the geometrical properties of centroidal Voronoi
tessellation in area coverage control while enabling multiple targets tracking without the need of consensus between individual agents.
Agent deployment using a time-varying density model is being introduced which is a function of the position of some unknown targets in the environment. A nonlinear derivative of the error coverage function is formulated based on the single-integrator agent dynamics. The agent, aware of its local coverage control condition, learns a value function online while leveraging the same from its neighbours. Moreover, a novel computational adaptive optimal control methodology based on work by [4] is proposed that employs the approximate dynamic programming technique online to iteratively solve the algebraic Riccati equation with completely unknown system dynamics as a solution to linear quadratic regulator problem. Furthermore, an online tuning adaptive optimal control algorithm is implemented using an actor-critic neural network recursive least-squares solution framework. The work in…

▼ The aim of the research is to asses the role of ETV’s newsroom journalist, reporters’ and editors’, as gatekeepers and agenda setter in news selection and presentation. The research further asses the extent of NGOs air
coverage in ETV in 8P.m. news cast and the general overview of the relationship between NGOs and individual ETV journalists.
The research has brought important theoretical framework in chapter two, so as to strengthen the analysis part in chapter four and five. In chapter three, both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to indicate how data’s were analyzed in chapter four and five. Video-recorded news stories were analyzed using content analysis; while in-depth interviews were conducted with PR officers and ETV newsroom editors and reporter.
As indicated in the content analysis, some 472 news stories were recorded with the total air time of 37,760 second; 3.2 percent of which entertain NGOs. On the other hand, it was indicated that NGOs were the most important channel to deliver foreign aid that is estimated to be one third of the national budget, to the country.
The response forwarded by reporters and editors uncovered reason why NGOs used to get less
coverage in the 8 p.m. news
coverage and how and why NGOs try to negotiate with journalist informally to get air time.
The response came from interviews of newsroom editors, reporters showed that the gate keeping as well as agenda setting role ETV’s newsroom editors are significant. The research showed how editors’ personal biases adversely affect news
coverage of NGOs’.

▼ The media are a very powerful tool in society and should ideally be free of any government
control and interference. The Kenyan Constitution upholds press freedom and thus anytime
the government interferes with the media, it will be infringing on their constitutional right.
Regardless of this constitutional provision, the Kenyan government has sometimes sought to
interfere with the media operations. This study seeks to find out how the two leading
newspapers in the country reported on the Standard Group raid of 2006. The main objective
of this study was to find out how the Daily Nation and the Standard covered the Standard
Group raid of 2006.The study also sought to find out the themes that came out in the stories
done on the raid and to establish the sources of the stories done on the raid. This study used
the qualitative research approach and content analysis as the data collection method. The
method of analysis that was used by this study was thematic analysis. The mass
communication theory used by this study was the Agenda Setting theory. The population
used in this study was all the stories on the Daily Nation and Standard newspapers for the
month of March 2006, from 1st March to 31st March. The sample used for the study was a
census of all the stories on the Standard Group Raid. The data collected was presented in
form of tables and graphs. The study found out that most of the stories on the raid were done
by the Standard. It also found that the Daily Nation had no editorial and the Standard had
only one editorial. The study found that majority of the stories on the Standard Group raid
were news stories. The study concluded that the Standard and Nation newspapers had
covered the Standard Group raid adequately but had downplayed the affected parties that are
journalists and media owners. The political angle of coverage of the Standard Group raid had
taken prominence during the reporting on the raid by the Nation and Standard newspapers.
The study recommended that the Nation and Standard should have had more editorials to
show their strong standpoint against the raid. Another recommendation was for the two
dailies to minimize politicization of the raid when reporting on similar incidents in the future

▼ Mobile phone voice communications using the traditional Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) signal methods depends on the cellular network operator signal coverage. There is a communication problem when mobile phones users want to communicate to each other when they are located in an area where there is no GSM signal coverage.
This study objective was to develop and evaluate a prototype that can enable mobile phone calls between users who are located within an area where there is no mobile operator signal coverage. The prototype focuses on using Asterisk server which is an open source framework that can be used for building voice-protocol real-time communications applications, Session Initiation protocol which is a call setup and signaling protocol and a wireless local area network (WLAN).
This study results and analysis demonstrated that the prototype can be successfully used to make phone calls between mobile phones without using cellular network GSM or 3G signals with satisfactory voice quality. According to voice quality standards, the prototype provides acceptable sound quality as evidenced by the measured R-Factor of 93.2. The call establishment time was below a second, which is ideal for real time mobile phone calls communication. The prototype also provided the capability of multiple simultaneous calls between mobile phones. However, mobile phone calls conversations were getting poor and eventually being disconnected when either the calling or called wireless network signal becomes weak.
For the wireless network to cover a wide area, an extended distributed wireless local area network using multiple high performance access points, signal repeaters, as well as using a hybrid of wireless and cabled infrastructure is recommended for future studies. Also recommended is a server class hardware to host the IP PBX server as well as integrating the prototype with existing PBXs that are connected to PSTN lines to bridge mobile phones VoIP calls with external PSTN or GSM mobile phone users.

▼ Due to the increase in competition and increasing market liberalization, firms in the
telecommunications industry are facing a threat to the profit sustainability. As market
players’ increase and offerings diversify, the market share reduces causing decrease in
profit (Neto, Kenny, Janakiram, & Watt, 2005). Furthermore, customers’ preferences are
dangerously volatile and satisfaction of their diverse needs can prove arduous and the
heightened customer awareness results in search for better alternative offerings in the
market. As a result, customers may voluntarily switch from one vendor to the other.
The study adopted a descriptive study design. The population was ISP firms in Kenya
from which 10 large ISPs were selected. A total of 50 questionnaires were mailed to the
managers of these firms. Primary data was collected through structured questionnaires.
Data was analysed using descriptive analysis and regression analysis.
The study found that before customer make a decision to purchase or stay with a service
provider, they considered service uptime, network coverage, and customer service. The
regression results showed that product pricing, customer service, and service uptime had
negative but insignificant effects on firm performance while parent shareholding and
network coverage had positive effects on firm performance. The study concludes that the
factors influencing customer staying in a provider were service uptime, customer service,
and network coverage. The study also concludes that product pricing, customer service,
parent shareholding, network coverage , and service uptime do not have a significant
effect on firm performance. Thus the financial performance of ISPs in Kenya is not
influenced by the churn factors.
The study recommends that Internet Service Providers in Kenya should ensure that they
enhance the level of service uptime as this was a major factor that customers considered
before making a decision to purchase an ISP product or to stay with the same ISP. The
study also recommends that Internet Service Providers should have large network

▼ Universal Health
Coverage (UHC) has provided the impetus for the
introduction of publicly-funded health insurance (PFHI) schemes, involving the private sector,
especially in low-and middle-income countries with mixed health systems. Although equity is
considered as being core to UHC, the implication of UHC interventions for equity in access
(availability, affordability and acceptability) beyond financial protection is inadequately
researched. India introduced a national PFHI scheme (Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana) in 2007 which
has since then been expanded considerably through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY)
scheme. However, contestation remains as to whether PFHI schemes are the most appropriate
interventions for UHC in India. Evidence so far provides cause for concern regarding their impact
on financial protection and health equity. With PFHI schemes burgeoning globally, there is an
urgent need for a holistic understanding of the pathways of impact of these schemes, including
their roles in promoting equity of access and achievement of UHC objectives. The state-funded
universal health insurance scheme (RSBY/MSBY) in Chhattisgarh State provided the opportunity to
explore these pathways of impact, especially on vulnerable communities, as the State has a
universal health insurance scheme. This PhD aims to study equity, access and utilisation in the
state-funded universal insurance scheme in Chhattisgarh State of India, in the context of Universal
Health
Coverage. It is presented as a thesis by publications.

▼ Spurred by declining costs of robotics, automation is becoming a prevalent area of interest for many industries. In some cases, it even makes economic sense to use a team of robots to achieve a goal faster. In this thesis we study sweep coverage path planning, in which a robot or a team of robots must cover all points in a workspace with its footprint. In many coverage applications, including cleaning and monitoring, it is beneficial to use coverage paths with minimal robot turns.
In the first part of the thesis, we address this for a single robot by providing an efficient method to compute the minimum altitude of a non-convex polygonal region, which captures the number of parallel line segments, and thus turns, needed to cover the region. Then, given a non-convex polygon, we provide a method to cut the polygon into two pieces that minimizes the sum of their altitudes. Given an initial convex decomposition of a workspace, we apply this method to iteratively re-optimize and delete cuts of the decomposition. Finally, we compute a coverage path of the workspace by placing parallel line segments in each region, and then computing a tour of the segments of minimum cost. We present simulation results on several workspaces with obstacles, which demonstrate improvements in both the number of turns in the final coverage path and runtime.
In the second part of the thesis, we extend the concepts developed for a single robot coverage to a multi robot case. We provide a metric χ that approximates the cost of a coverage path, which accounts for the cost of turns. Given a polygon, we provide a method for cutting a polygon into two that would minimize the maximum cost χ between the two polygons. Provided with an initial n-cell decomposition, we apply this method in the iterative manner to re-optimize cuts in order to minimize the maximum cost χ over all cells in the decomposition. For each cell in the re-optimized n-cell decomposition, a single robot coverage path is computed using the minimum altitude decomposition. We present the simulation results that demonstrate improvements in the maximum cost as well as the range of costs over all robots in the team.

▼ Wireless sensor networks provide a wide range of applications, such as environment surveillance, hazard monitoring, traffic control, and other commercial or military applications. The quality of service provided by a sensor network relies on its
coverage, i.e., how well an event can be tracked by sensors. This research studies issues about sensor
coverage: (1) how to optimally deploy new sensors in order to improve the
coverage of an existing network, (2) how to properly measure the
coverage when the path is a line. The best- and worst-case
coverage problems that are related to the observability of a path are addressed and formulated into computational geometry problems. We prove that there exists a duality between the two
coverage problems, and then solve the two problems together. The presented new-node placement algorithm is shown to deploy new nodes optimally in polynomial time. However, in some applications, such as highway monitoring and anti-missile interception systems, the trajectory of a target is linear but we can not find suitable
coverage measurement for the straight-line path in previous research. Therefore, this research presents novel algorithms for
coverage measurement of straight-line paths. Based on computational geometry and graph theory, we propose plane sweep algorithms to find the optimal straight-line paths for both the best-case and worst-case
coverage problems in polynomial time. Both mathematical analysis and simulations are used to prove the optimality of our algorithms.

▼ Coverage analysis is critical in pre-silicon verification of hardware designs for assessing the completeness of verification and identifying inadequately exercised areas of the design. It is widely integrated in the simulation based verification flow in the hardware industry. In this thesis, we provide solutions to enable effective
coverage analysis in assertion based and emulation based verification.
We introduce two practical and effective code
coverage metrics for assertions: one inspired by the test suite code
coverage reported by Register Transfer Level (RTL) simulators and the other by assertion correctness in the context of formal verification. We present efficient algorithms to compute
coverage with respect to the proposed metrics by analyzing the Control Flow Graph (CFG) constructed from the RTL source code. We apply our technique to a USB 2.0 design and an OpenRISC processor design and show that our
coverage evaluation is efficient and scalable. We also present a technique to evaluate and rank automatically generated assertions based on fault
coverage.
We present a novel technique to extract code
coverage from emulation platforms. Using our CFG framework, we identify conditions or decision nodes and map them to other statements in the code. Triggering of decision nodes is recorded using additional trigger logic during emulation and mapped back to the source code to obtain
coverage information. We apply our technique to an industrial design and show that it can efficiently provide fairly accurate code
coverage statistics with minimal overheads during emulation.

▼ Verification is a crucial part of an engineering project to assure quality of the product. In digital design, verification is a heavily researched topic as companies desperately look for ways to make the process faster and more reliable. The challenge only grows by the day as designs ambitiously swell in size and complexity. The language used, the methodology followed, the goal of verification and the evaluation of the verification process itself are some important aspects to be decided upon before commencement of this imperative exercise.
Directed testcases can overlook peculiar cases which can easily be encountered by allowing a certain degree of randomness in test vectors. In this thesis it is shown how verification can be improved by randomizing test inputs. The usefulness of functional coverage is also elucidated. It is also shown how randomizing test vectors and implementing functional coverage compliment each other. While randomization help achieve coverage goals faster, the results from functional coverage can be analysed to update test vector generation. The design at hand is the SPARC based LEON-3 microprocessor by Cobham Gaisler. The above tasks were performed by maintaining the spirit of software-based testing.

▼ Model averaging is commonly used to allow for model uncertainty in parameter estimation. In the frequentist setting, a model-averaged estimate of a parameter is a weighted mean of the estimates from the individual models, with the weights being based on an information criterion, such as AIC. A Wald confidence interval based on this estimate often performs poorly, as its sampling distribution is generally non-normal and estimation of the standard error is problematic. A natural alternative is to use a bootstrap approach. The current method is based on the percentile method, which bootstraps the estimate from the best model. Little previous research has been carried out to assess its
coverage properties. These issues demonstrate the need for further development into the interval estimation when making multi-model inference. In this thesis, we propose a new method for constructing a model-averaged confidence interval using studentized bootstrap. We carry out simulations when the data are either normal or lognormal. Our results suggest that the studentized bootstrap interval provides the best
coverage for approximately the same interval width as competing intervals in the lognormal setting. It is also shown to be the best approach for both normal and lognormal data when the sample size is small.
Furthermore, we consider the use of model-averaging in the analysis of overdispersed count data. In a single-model setting, the default method for dealing with overdispersion is to either use a quasi-Poisson approach, or to fit the data using a negative binomial model. We examine the performance of the two methods in a model-averaging setting. Our results suggest that the quasi-Poisson approach leads to a better
coverage rate, even when a negative binomial model is used to generate the data.

▼ Background Donor financing in conjunction with national policies works through the existing health system to impact the uptake of MNCH interventions. However within countries, other key factors such as individual and household behaviors, the political economy, and the macroeconomic environment also influence the uptake of interventions. Demonstrating the relationship between increased financing and increased
coverage can provide a platform for policymakers and other stakeholders to refine and appropriately target their health programs. Methods This complex relationship between financing and
coverage was analyzed using: 1) A multi-country analysis examining the impact of official development assistance on the change in
coverage levels of MNCH interventions; 2) To further contextualize the results of the multi-country analysis, a systematic review was performed to identify the different metrics used in computing
coverage change; and 3) Individual-level factors related to
utilization of maternal health services was examined among women of varying socioeconomic status in Nigeria. Results The multi-country analysis examining the impact of official development assistance (ODA) on
coverage levels of MNCH interventions positive associations. The systematic review found that the method of computing change is important in
coverage change estimates; and this can impact findings and future research directions. Furthermore, the trend of
coverage rates within a country and the baseline rate is also important. Lastly, predictors of maternal health service utilization among Nigerian women were maternal education and employment. Conclusion This analysis has shown that ODA to maternal and child health can be effective in increasing the
coverage rates of MNCH interventions. These results are important and present a preliminary attempt to understand this complex relationship between financing and the uptake of health interventions. In addition, the
coverage change
metrics utilized are important can have a significant impact on the results of
coverage change analyses. Lastly, in our analyses that examined individual level factors associated with maternal health service utilization, maternal education and employment are shown to be important factors associated with utilization regardless of socioeconomic status. Understanding the dynamics between individual level predictors and the uptake of interventions is important to ensure that those in need are appropriately targeted for health interventions.

▼ A wireless multicast network with a stringent decoding delay constraint and a minimum
coverage requirement is characterized when the fading channel state information is available only at the receiver side. In the first part, the optimal expected rate achievable by a random user in the network is derived in a single antenna system in terms of the minimum multicast requirement in two scenarios: hard coverage constraint and soft coverage constraint. In the first case, the minimum multicast requirement is expressed by multicast outage capacity while in the second case, the expected multicast rate should satisfy the minimum requirements. Also, the optimum power allocation in an infinite layer superposition code, achieving the highest expected typical rate, is derived. For the MISO case, a suboptimal coding scheme is proposed, which is shown to be asymptotically optimal, when the number of transmit antennas grows at least logarithmically with the number of users in the network. In the second part, a joint source-channel coding scheme is motivated, where a multi-resolution Gaussian source code is mapped to a multi-level channel code. In this part, the hard and soft coverage constraints are defined as maximum outage multicast distortion and maximum expected multicast distortion, respectively. In each scenario, the minimum expected distortion of a typical user is derived in terms of the corresponding coverage constraint. The minimization is first performed for the finite state fading channels and then is extended to the continuous fading channels.

▼ This thesis explores the representation of the Dutch-Indonesian conflict – between August 1945 and December 1949 – within the American media. In contrast with the popular belief of a consistent and principled anti-colonialist approach, current research establishes that the terms in which the press portrayed the conflict were not only developing over time but, in addition, were to a great extent dependent on pragmatic interests rather than idealistic beliefs. Studying media
coverage parallel to U.S. policy-making will furthermore show that the press provided the parameters for the State Department’s actions.

▼ In the recent years, Kenyans have been scarred repeatedly by a series of attacks by the Al Shabaab terrorist group based in neighbouring Somalia. The devastating attacks have been characterised by profiling and targeting of non-Muslims, a tactic that has polarised Kenyans along religious lines and increased likelihood of conflict. This study sought to find out how the print media covered religious communities, specifically Christians and Muslims, in the Al Shabaab attacks in Mandera (November/December 2014) and Garissa University College (April 2015) in the context of the Code of Conduct for the Practice of journalism by the Media Council of Kenya (2013) and the backdrop of interreligious polarisation occasioned by previous attacks. Both attacks under study were characterised by separation of Muslims and Christians before the latter were killed. The study analysed contents of 133 news articles that made direct references to the two religious communities within four weeks of the attacks. For the Mandera attack, articles were selected between November 23rd to December 23rd 2014 while for the Garissa attack; they were selected between April 2nd to May 2nd 2015. The study also interviewed six journalists and two editors regarding the print media coverage of those attacks to gain deeper insights into the matter. The study established that the coverage of religious communities in the two publications was largely done professionally in line with the Code of Conduct for the practice of journalism in Kenya with the exceptions of a few shortcomings. In addition, the coverage was largely done in a manner that is not polarising. Instead, the majority of articles published emphasised national unity among Kenyans of all religious communities to combat Al Shabaab. The study recommends that the media should exercise extra caution in reporting terrorist attacks to ensure that they do so professionally and accurately without fanning interreligious polarisation and conflicts in the country.

▼ As a public medium and a vehicle of "culture", which frames and comprehends social priorities, relations and identities, news has received scant anthropological attention (Spitulnik 1993).
Whanganui Iwi's occupation of Moutoa Gardens in 1995 was made available to a public as"news". My project reveals a range of exclusions around these mediations, which conjure wider issues regarding the production of representations within (post) colonial contexts. As a contribution to anthropology, my ethnography responds to the limitations of traditional ethnographic praxis, providing a productive response to criticisms of the discipline and revealing the public value of ethnographic sensibilities.
Whanganui Iwi believed the Gardens to be the historical site of Pakaitore pa. The area was reclaimed as a marae, shelters were built, the perimeter fenced, and Iwi lived on site for 80 days. The initiative constituted an expression of Iwi's experiences of exteriority within Wanganui and their frustration with the delay of the Crown's response to their claims alleging breaches of Treaty of Waitangi. Iwi temporarily inverted their relationship to the Pakeha community by establishing a literal boundary to the marae, which rendered those who were not supportive of Iwi aspirations "outsiders". While access to the marae was controlled, and restrictions were placed on news workers, the only group banned from the marae were the employees of the city's newspaper, the Wanganui Chronicle.
My project details the production of news about Pakaitore, and the attempts of Iwi to control their representation; specifying the role of "location" (both spatial and ideological) in the production of written and photographic accounts (Haraway 1991). I examine how the structures of news production are deployed and contested by news workers, and the manner in which news texts may or may not be "inhabited" by their subjects and public.
I compare the journalistic practices of Chronicle workers, prior to and following their ban, with those of out of town newsworkers from press and television. The mechanisms, codes, and values of what makes "good" news structure particular locations for news workers, and this largely precluded conveying the intention and experience of nga Iwi at Pakaitore. This extended to the reports gathered by the reporter for TVNZ (the state owned broadcaster), who, as Iwi whānau, was allowed unfettered access to the marae.
Being "the news" interfered with agendas inside the marae. From this location, Pakaitore was about building relationships between hapu and strengthening a sense of community. Hui addressed the status of Iwi within Wanganui, and rangatahi and visitors were educated in tribal history and tikanga. These priorities contest the "outside" perspective that Pakaitore was simply an attempt to antagonise Pakeha authorities.
Throughout the course of my fieldwork visual aspects of media representations of Pakaitore were cited by a range of my informants as conveying particular authority. In some contexts this was by way…

▼ There is a growing concern in Zambia over what many media personnel regard as news
worthy stories and in particular corruption-related stories. Many argue that the media
would rather cover a political story than a news beat on corruption which is of great
significance to their audience. Hence one is tempted to wonder as to whether the media
deliberately ignore such stories or the ownership of a particular media house has a
bearing on the type of news they cover.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the media coverage on corruption issues in
Zambia. The study also did a comparison of two media houses namely, the Zambia
National Broadcasting Corporation TV1 (ZNBC TV1) and MUVI Television to try and
establish whether media ownership has any influence in the way corruption stories are
covered in Zambia.
A number of both qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study including
in-depth interviews, quantitative interviews and content analysis of corruption-related
news and discussion programmes on both MUVI TV and ZNBC TV1 from January to
April 2017.
The research findings revealed that the media is a key stakeholder in the fight against
corruption. However, regardless of their status as agenda setters, the media especially
the state owned ZNBC TV1 have failed to match the people’s expectations in the fight
against corruption. Being the national broadcaster, the expectations are that ZNBC TV1
should work closely with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in following up on
corruption cases and to provide feedback to the Zambian community. MUVI TV has
been an alternative for many local viewers but it also is limited to only those who are
able to buy a decoder and can manage to pay subscription fees to access its content.
This means that those who cannot afford to buy the MUVI TV decoder have to rely on
the National broadcaster for information and if they do not cover any corruption stories
then the society will believe that corruption is not an issue in Zambia. According to the
findings from this research, ZNBC TV1 only showed corruption-related news when the
victim was not a government official or someone who had fallen out of favour with the
government like the former Information and Broadcast Minister, Dr Chishimba Kambwili.
The research findings also showed a link between media ownership and corruption
reporting. It was clearly revealed that the state owned ZNBC TV did not report on any
senior government official found wanting because it was government owned and funded
by the government for its operations.

The problem of unknown area coverage with
mobile robots has received considerable attention over the past
years. This problem is a common challenge in many applications,
including automatic lawn mowing and vacuum cleaning. However, most
of the approaches find difficult to implement in real life because
of problems of environment data reading. In this paper we consider
the problem of robust area covering algorithm implementation in
mobile robot. The chosen approach is based on simple and robust
algorithm for uncertain environment and simple robot platform. The
results showed robustness, reliability of chosen method of control.
The constructed robot has shown simplicity, cheapness of creation
and possibility for different algorithm testing. The significance
of this paper lies in the practical solution for robust mobile
robot area coverage, suitable for noisy environment and low
precisions robot sensors.

▼ This report is based on an investigation of the adequacy of the financial news and information provided by the Times of Zambia. The study was aimed at assessing the role of the Times of Zambia in helping improve the public’s financial knowledge on various financial topics such as banking, insurance, credit and pension schemes among others. The study was also aimed at evaluating the scope of financial coverage by the Times of Zambia in comparison with other media and also establishing which financial information was most preferred by the general public.
The methodology used in the research included: purposive sampling, in that only salaried employees were interviewed and systematic sampling by picking interviewees from every 4th office. The collection of data included the administering of 100 quantitative interviews, 1 focus group discussion of 10 participants, an in-depth interview with the Times of Zambia business news editor and content analysis of the Times of Zambia financial coverage for 2 weeks. Quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) while qualitative data was analysed thematically.
The findings of the study revealed that people’s understanding of financial information is limited to saving or having a bank account and other complex forms of saving through pension schemes, insurance policies and other investment opportunities such as the stock market have been ignored. Information on credit, borrowing, performance of the economy and taxation which were equally important components of financial information have also been ignored. Findings also revealed that though the Times of Zambia was interested in providing financial information, the provision of that information was affected by a limited number of journalists positioned in various parts of the country and by limited resources.
Data from the study also revealed that most people felt that the Times of Zambia did not provide adequate financial information and that if it did, the editorials were boring and did not catch the attention of most people. The inadequacy of the financial information was gauged against the respondents’ responses to whether they received information on various financial topics or not. The inadequate training of the Times of Zambia financial reporters in reporting financial matters also explained why they could not break down financial information into something easy to understand or interesting for the audience. Some people, however, thought they were far more financially literate such that even when the information was available, they would ignore it because they believed they already knew it. The majority of the people preferred the financial articles in news format and medium in size. Finally, observations and recommendations were made which are meant to help the Times of Zambia improve its financial coverage and would result in people being fully informed about financial matters.

▼ Outdoor to indoor mobile coverage is evaluated for differentfrequencies in two scenarios, a single building scenario and a cityenvironment. A new model for outdoor to indoor propagation issuggested, connecting existing, highly detailed indoor and outdoorray-tracing propagation models. The model is compared to previous, site specific as well as statistical, propagation models. Resultsconclude that the new model gives higher path gain for edge users inthe single building scenario, whereas results from the city scenarioare inconclusive. Furthermore, results from the single buildingscenario suggest that indoor coverage is possible at 5 GHz and belowfor most buildings, whereas for the city scenario indoor coverage at5 GHz will be possible only for buildings without metally coatedwindows. Achieving indoor coverage at 30 GHz is highly problematicfor all cases, and it is concluded that indoor base stations arenecessary if frequencies of 10 GHz and above are to be used infuture mobile networks. In addition, an indoor analysis is made to verify existing lossper meter indoor models. It is concluded that such models are oftenoptimistic, although their assumption of log-normal shadowing remainvalid, at least for closed offices. Furthermore, the assumption ofloss as a linear function of distance might be unfeasible for higherfrequencies, where a breakpoint in the linear model was observed ata distance of roughly 10 meters.

▼ LoRa is being widely adopted by industrial communities for its long range, robustness and low power wireless communication capabilities. In fact LoRa is gaining more popularity even amongst the common people as it is an affordable solution and operates in the unlicensed radio spectrum. However, LoRa provides a widely heterogeneous coverage; it can reach hundreds of meters or up to tens of kilometers, depending on the surrounding environment. Determining the coverage of LoRa stations is key to provide a good quality of service. On one hand, the traditional method of expensive measurement campaigns can be employed to estimate LoRa's coverage; but this is impractical due to the large geographical areas involved. On the other hand, popular channel models can be adopted; but many of them are yet to be explored for LoRa or rely entirely on the user predening the type of environment to estimate coverage. Neither of those approach are suitable for thousands of non-expert citizens and organizations around the world looking forward to understanding the coverage of their LoRa stations. The aim of the thesis is to automatically estimate the coverage of LoRa, before the deployment of the gateway and without relying on on-site measurements or the user's perception of the environment. Moreover, the estimation must be carried out in a simple, low cost and low eort approach. Considering that the surrounding environment determines in a fundamental manner, the coverage of wireless technologies including LoRa, we use readily available remote sensing information coming from satellites to estimate the characteristics of an area. In this manner, we free up the user from providing any type of data. Based on this remote sensing approach, the thesis provides two main contributions: First we analyze a group of parametric models (ITU-R 1812 and Okumura Hata model) and determine that the Okumura Hata model is better suited for LoRa. Second we improve the performance of using the basic Okumura Hata model by proposing an automated approach that explores remotely sensed height models and land cover maps to automatically congure channel model parameters. The performance is evaluated based on a relative comparison due to some unknown transmitter setting parameters and assess which algorithm accurately tracks the changes in the real path loss. A validation using a relative comparison approach on 18000+ samples of real LoRa data shows that the modied algorithm gives an improved performance compared to the novel approach in path loss prediction and the ITU model. The modied algorithm could improve the coverage up to a factor of 5 compared to the novel approach in free space ranges. Moreover, in an urban built-up city the modied algorithm could improve the coverage by up to 1.5 km compared to the novel approach.

▼ In post-environmental news discourse, environmentalism is reduced to a rhetorical motif that is relayed by all sides of the political debate, including the environmental opposition. The phase of post-environmentalism in environmental discourse is indicated by the absorption of environmental messages into mainstream discourse so that they are no longer 'owned' by subversive environmentalists, but by anyone claiming to represent the cause. The result is that a counter-discourse is no longer present in the discussion to challenge dominant assumptions about unlimited economic growth. Using critical discourse analysis, this thesis examines the news
coverage of governmental regulations aimed at reducing toxic algae in Lake Winnipeg, Canada. The thesis describes how the science is used in the narratives, and compares patterns of doubting science in the
coverage with similar patterns found in news discourse historically. The analysis shows that the pro-lake cause is recruited throughout the
coverage to boost legitimacy for the Manitoba hog industry and the City of Winnipeg, who leveraged public campaigns opposing the regulations. Rather than contributing to a public understanding of the tension between environmental and economic paradigms, the simplistic cost-benefit analysis of the regulations in the
coverage decontextualises the problem from its complex political-economic origins. Furthermore, rather than presenting environmental science in a way that aids public understanding, science is either credited or discredited to reinforce the industry and governmental positions. The need for transparent communication of environmental problems and their causes is thus hindered by the legitimacy claims-making that dominates the discourse. The repeated and shared voicing of environmental messages in the media further embeds the discourse into a post-environmental phase by excluding a counter-discourse from the discussion – environmentalism becomes talked about by everyone, and yet discussed by no one.

▼ This thesis assesses the feasibility of applying
coverage model to the problem of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for aerial surveillances. The purpose of aerial surveillance is using sensors to cover the task area to obtain the information regarding to this area, such as environmental study. Comparing to static sensors, business purposes UAVs have higher mobility. Since static sensors have limited sensing range, it is not possible to use them to cover the task area. UAVs with sensors onboard can be used for surveillance and save the data to obtain more detailed information of the task area. The data retrieved by the sensors can be used for developing autonomous control algorithms for navigation of the UAV. However, there are some inevitable factors that shortens the flight time of the UAV. For example, considering the maximum payload of the UAV, the battery of UAV can usually last at most 30 minutes since it cannot be very large. It is very important to improve the efficiency of UAV surveillance by pre-designing the flight path for one UAVs or deployment positions for multiple UAVs.

▼ Pregnant women are more vulnerable to malaria than other adults; they are four times more likely to get malaria and twice as likely to die of it. In Ghana, malaria is the leading cause of morbidity accounting for about 40% of outpatients’ attendance. It was estimated that malaria accounts for 22 percent of under-five mortality and 9 percent of maternal deaths (The President’s Malaria Initiative, 2007).
At Nkoranza South District, over 7,510 ITNs have been issued out since 2007. But malaria is still the leading cause of ailment in the district accounting for about 47% outpatients’ attendance.
The main objective of this study was to assess the coverage and consistent use of ITNs among pregnant women in Nkoranza South District. Coverage of possession and use of ITNs was assessed through descriptive cross sectional survey method of twenty towns and villages at Nkoranza South District. Three hundred and eighty four (384) pregnant women were sampled from the study communities. The data was analysed using SPSS version 16.0 and Stata software. Descriptive statistics was employed in the analysis of field data.
Possession of ITN among pregnant women in the district was low (32%) when compared to the Abuja target of 60% but its use was high (73%) among those who possessed ITN. There was no association between possession and use of ITN (p= 0.12, chi = 2.47).
More long lasting nets should be imported into the country and must be highly subsidized for all and not only pregnant women and children under 5 because everybody suffers from malaria. More permanent conical nets should be imported for easy hanging even without beds. Education on ITN should be intensified and more emphasis should be laid on the re-treatment of nets since culture of net re-treatment was very low in the district.

▼ In this thesis, we present a new register-transfer level (RTL) test generation method that
makes use of two
coverage metrics, Branch
Coverage, and Mutation
Coverage across two
stages, to cover hard-to-reach points previously unreached. We start with a preprocessing
stage by converting the RTL source to a C++ equivalent using a modified Verilator, which
also automatically creates mutants and the corresponding mutated C++ design, based on
arithmetic, logical and relational operators during conversion. With the help of extracted
Data Dependency and Control Flow Graphs, in every <golden, mutation> pair, branches
containing variables dependent on the mutated statement are instrumented to track them.
The first stage uses Evolutionary algorithms with Ant Colony Optimization to generate
test vectors with mutation
coverage as the metric. Two new filtering techniques are also
proposed which optimize the first stage by eliminating the need for generating tests for
redundant mutants. The next stage is the original BEACON which now takes the generated
mutation test vectors as the initial population unlike random vectors, and output final test
vectors. These test vectors succeed in improving the
coverage up to 70%, compared to the
previous approaches for most of the ITC99 benchmarks. With the application of filtering
techniques, we also observed a speedup by 85% in the test generation runtime and also up
to 78% reduction in test vector size when compared with those generated by the previous
techniques.

▼ Rotatable and directional (R&D) sensors are wireless sensors that have the sector-like
coverage range and rotation capability. These sensors can provide temporal
coverage of objects by periodically rotating to monitor them. An object is called δi-time covered if it can be monitored by R&D sensor(s) for at least δi portion of a period, where 0 < δi ⤠1. Given a set of heterogeneous objects that have different δi-time covered requirements, the paper formulates a generalized R&D sensor deployment (GRSD) problem, which determines how to deploy the minimum number of R&D sensors to satisfy the
coverage requirement of each object. We prove that the GRSD problem is NP-hard and develop an efficient heuristic to deploy R&D sensors based on the distribution and δi values of objects. Extensive simulation results show that our GRSD heuristic can save more sensors compared with other methods, which significantly reduces the deployment cost of R&D sensor networks.
