▼ Current requirements of nonvolatile memory (NVM) are the high density cells, low-power consumption, high-speed operation and good reliability for next-generation NVM application. However, all of the charges stored in the floating gate will leak into the substrate if the tunnel oxide has a leakage path in the conventional NVM during endurance test. Therefore, the tunnel oxide thickness is difficult to scale down in terms of charge retention and endurance characteristics. Nanocrystals (NCs) NVMs are one of the promising candidates to substitute for conventional floating gate memory since the discrete storage nodes as the charge storage media can effectively enable the improvement of data retention for the scaling down device. In this thesis, we try to overcome the limitation of conventional NVMs during the scaling down process and further increase the retention time by means of changing the structure of Nanocrystals NVMs. Firstly, we deposit a NiSi2 layer as the nanocrystal self-assembled layer and thereby apply it to Nanocrystals NVMs. In room temperature, we bombard NiSi2 target to form single layer and double layer charge trapping layer through sputtering system layer by layer, and the two charge trapping layers are separated by 30 Å silicon-oxide (SiO2). Next, we also deposit silicon oxide as control oxide. According to rapid thermal anneal (RTA) mix oxide gas, we improve the oxide quality and supply NiSi2 sufficient energy to reach the smallest Gibbs free energy so as to form uniform and high density NiSi nanocrystal. On account of the increasing of trapping center and the coulomb repulsion power, the double layer structure NiSi Nanocrystals NVMs has better memory window and retention than the single layer one. In the similar process, we sputter NiSi2 target with Ar gas mixes NH3 gas to form silicon-nitride compound layers. Then, we use the same RTA process to form nanocrystal and improve the oxide quality. In the light of TEM and XPS analysis, we may infer that the nanocrystal is formed by NiSi2 and SiNX compound. Further, based on our electronic analysis, we can observe that the retention of NiSi2/SiNX compound Nanocrystal NVMs after 104 sec rises from 50% to 72% in comparison with the traditional one due of the quantum well band structure contributes by NiSi2 and SiNX compound nanocrystals. The retention of NiSi2/SiNX compound Nanocrystal NVMs after 104 sec is even better than the double layer without NH3 mixed one, 68%. Furthermore, the threshold voltage of NiSi2/SiNX compound Nanocrystal NVMs has not been subject to change after endurance with 104 programming and erasing cycles continuously. Thus, by means of depositing nanocrystal charge trapping layer mixed with NH3 gas, we achieve the objective of simplifying the fabrication process. These fabrication techniques for the application of nonvolatile nanocrystal memory can also be applicable to the current manufacture process of the integrated circuit manufacture. ▼ This article is about pit latrines. In Zambia, pit latrines are among the most common human excreta disposal systems that have been in use for many decades especially in informal settlements. Kanyama is one of the largest informal settlements of Lusaka where pit latrines are largely in use. However, pit latrines have for long been widely associated with environmental pollution. The main aim of the study was to make an ethical evaluation of the impact of the use of pit latrines on the health of the human and natural environment in Kanyama compound. The specific areas that were investigated to achieve the main aim are: the current situation regarding pit latrines in Kanyama; the impact of pit latrines on the residents in Kanyama; the impact of pit latrines on the natural environment in Kanyama and making an ethical evaluation of the findings. A case study design using a qualitative methodology along with an ethical component was used. Primary data was collected using in-depth interviews with 40 heads of households selected by systematic sampling and six key informants purposefully selected, focus group discussions selected by convenient sampling and observations. The six key informants were two officials from the Lusaka City Council (LCC), two officials from Kanyama Water Trust (KWT) and one official from Kanyama clinic. Three focus group discussions were conducted comprising seven discussants in each selected by convenience sampling. Sources of secondary materials involved literature obtained from the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) library, University of Zambia (UNZA) library, the School of Education, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), the School of Natural Sciences and online resources. Focusing on the common themes emerging from the data, findings were analysed and discussed, and then evaluated using two ethical theories and two ethical principles namely: Utilitarian theory, the Land Ethic, the Precautionary Principle (PP) and the Principle of the Lesser Evil (PLE). Findings revealed that the majority of Kanyama residents use pit latrines for human waste disposal; that because of the poor water and sanitation situation in the area, the impact of pit latrines on residents was not good, because inappropriate methods for constructing pit latrines and water wells were mostly used and because most pit latrines were constructed close to sources of water; and that although Kanyama residents are aware of the threats posed to the health of the human and natural environment by pit latrines, they still believe that they have no option but to continue using them because they are a better alternative for now. The ethical evaluation revealed a tension between the Land Ethic and the Utilitarian theory as follows: while Utilitarianism would justify the presence and use of pit latrines because the majority of residents benefit from using them despite some negative consequences associated with them, the Land Ethic together with the Precautionary Principle would not justify their existence and…

▼ Vascular development is important for vertebrates, and genetic control vascular patterning has been intensively characterized. In addition, many studies have been show environmental hormones and chemical compounds affect vascular growth. Natural marine compound GB9 was isolated from the marine soft coral Capnella imbricate, the study show GB9 had anti-neuroinflammatory and anti-nociceptive effects. However, the effect of GB9 on blood vessels is still unknown. In this study, we use transgene zebrafish as an animal model to understand the effect of vascular development in GB9 treated embryo. The results showed that GB9 treated embryos impair ISV (intersegmental vessel) growth, and CVP (caudal vein plexus) sprouting, which leads to pericardial edema and circulation defects. TUNEL assay and AO staining showed that vascular defects were not caused by apoptosis, but likely due to the impairment of cell proliferation and/or migration. We further showed GB9 treatment reduce cell proliferation marker p-HH3 and protein level, by counting p-HH3 immunostaining cell and Western blotting. In addition, we quantitated the migration distance of ISV between 24hpf and 28hpf and perform wound healing assay in endothelial cells EA.hy926. We show that GB9 treatment inhibits cell migration. Next, we examined the molecular mechanism of vascular defects by in situ hybridization, qPCR and Western blot, the results showed GB9 treatment decreases the expression of arteriovenous markers, ephrinb2, flt4, mrc1, flk and stabilinï¼the protein levels related to VEGF, BMP signal pathways. Those results suggest that GB9 interfere vascular signaling regulation in zebrafish. Besides, we examine whether GB9 treatment cause vascular defect due to the increase of oxidative stress? We co-treated low-dose GB9 and H2O2, observed that defects in CVP formation was more severe than single treatment. Moreover, antioxidants Acetyl-cysteine (NAC) can rescue vascular defects in GB9 treated embryos. These data suggested that GB9 exposure causes vascular defects mediated by an increase in oxidative. Together our data show that GB9 treatment affect vascular development mediated by the interference of VEGF and BMP signals by the enhance of oxidative stress. Certain models of the mental lexicon feature a lemma level that stores lexico-syntactic representations such as case, gender and number in inflection-rich languages. However, as Chinese lacks this type of inflections, it remains a question as to whether lexico-syntactic features are represented and activated in the mental lexicon of the Chinese language. As a result, the immediate objective of the present study was to examine if classifiers, a syntactical device common in Chinese, are activated during visual word recognition. Nevertheless, the scope of the study was limited to compound words firstly because of their prevalence, and secondly because they purportedly embody the semantic and also possibly the syntactic features of both internal constituents. This representational dualism would in turn provide valuable insights into the representation of compound words as to whether they are stored as a whole (full-listing), as decomposed parts (full-parsing) or both (dual-route). If a compound is represented as a whole, then it should assume a single classifier representation. Conversely, if a compound is represented as the concatenation of constituents, then they should be associated with separate classifier representations with the representation of the head being dominant. To test the above hypotheses, a grammaticality judgment task in which a classifier matched only the first constituent (related foil), a classifier matched the whole compound (target) and a classifier unrelated to both (control) was conducted on eighteen Cantonese-speaking participants. Consistent with the above hypotheses, latencies for target selection were significantly longer for related foils than the controls, implying activation of the classifier representation of the first constituent and its later competition with that of the whole compound (i.e. two classifier representations are activated for each compound) as predicted under a connectionist framework. A corollary of this interpretation is that compounds are decomposed prior to the activation of the lexico- syntactic features of the constituents. Overall, the above findings have huge implications for existing Chinese reading models in that these models should take into account the role of lexico-syntactic representations in the mental lexicon. Finally, the above findings were evaluated against two competing but unlikely accounts which involved erroneous parsing and the skipping of the second constituent.

▼ This study investigated the microbial ecology of Pony Lake, Antarctica. The main objectives of this research were to 1) characterize physicochemical parameters in Pony Lake during the transition from ice covered to ice free, 2) highlight seasonal and inter-seasonal alterations in lake parameters, 3) relate the physicochemical conditions in the ice and water column to microbial processes and community structure, 4) characterize the effects of phototransformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on its bioavailability to bacteria, and 5) demonstrate the role of carotenoid pigments in protecting cells against environmental stresses. Also included are results from three McMurdo Dry Valley lakes on the survivability of microbes encapsulated within the lake ice covers. The results of this study highlight the sensitivity of Antarctic environments and the close coupling of environmental conditions and biological processes. Inter-seasonal differences in weather conditions and snow accumulation strongly affected the physicochemistry of this lacustrine system. Biological processes were closely tied to the physicochemical lake conditions. As a consequence planktonic abundances, production rates, and community structure evolved distinctly in each year. Bacterial production was regulated by the quality of DOM. Whereas nutrient availability appeared to play a minor role in eutrophic Pony Lake water, it became more critical for microbial communities found within the ice column of Antarctic lakes. Especially in the ice cover of the McMurdo Dry Valley lakes, enhanced microbial diversity and survivability was associated with particles (nutrient enriched micro-zones) within an otherwise ultra-oligotrophic habitat. In Pony Lake ice, microbial activity and community structure differed with respect to different strata within the ice column, induced by freeze-concentration of solutes, bioavailability of DOM, and oxygen gradients. A comparison of carotenoid pigmented and non-pigmented heterotrophic bacteria indicated that pigmentation provides enhanced resistance to environmental stresses such as freeze-thaw cycles or solar radiation. Collectively, the Pony Lake data demonstrated that microorganisms that persist throughout the year were able to survive much more severe conditions while entrapped within the ice compared to those observed in the lake water during summer months. ▼ Knowledge on metabolic networks across species can be utilized to help address many challenges in biotechnology, including metabolic engineering. Large-scale annotated metabolic databases, such as KEGG and MetaCyc, provide a wealth of information to researchers designing novel biosynthetic pathways. However, many metabolic pathfinding tools that assist in identifying possible solution pathways fail to facilitate the interpretation of these pathway results. This work begins to address this problem by examining the performance of standard clustering algorithms on results produced by a popular metabolic pathfinding algorithm and suggesting the use of compound ”hubs” for examining the produced results. To address the first point, we assessed the ability of standard clustering method to expertly group pathways. Three standard clustering methods (hierarchical, k-means, and k-medoids) along with three pair-wise distance measures (Levenshtein, Jaccard, and n-gram) were used to group lysine, isoleucine, and 3-hydroxypropanoic acid (3-HP) biosynthesis pathways produced by a recent metabolic finding algorithm. The quality of the resulting clusters were quantitatively evaluated against expected pathway groupings taken from theliterature. Hierarchical clustering and Levenshtein distance appeared to best match external pathway labels across the three biosynthesis pathways but results suggest that grouping pathways with more complex underlying topologies may require more tailored clustering methods. In summary, the clustering of pathways proved much more nuanced than excepted due to the various intricacies of computed paths and several ways of getting between two compounds conserving the same number of atoms. To address the second point, we investigate the use of “hub” compounds. Hub compounds were selected by metabolic experts among compounds with a large number of in-degree reactions. An analysis of our results shows that hub compounds are common in the pathfinding results but that themselves alone cannot be used to cluster pathways. Our observations give rise to a new proposed method that will compute pathways between input and output compounds by using a precomputed a lookup table for pathways between the most well connected compound hubs in the metabolic network. The ultimate goal of precomputing the lookup table is to reduce search space while still obtaining most, if not all, pathway results found by the original search algorithm. We provide evidence that this is a promising direction for future research and can yield results that are more easily interpreted and refined by users. ▼ This thesis is focussed on the use of the diene-regenerative Diels-Alder reaction to assemble bicyclic molecular frameworks that are commonly found in bioactive natural products. Chapter 1 examines the history of natural products in pharmaceuticals, and introduces the concept of natural product derivatisation to improve biological activity. The development of focussed libraries of compounds to discover potent natural product derivatives is contrasted with combinatorial chemistry, using two illustrative case studies. The diene-regenerative Diels-Alder reaction is introduced, and key literature examples of this transformation are discussed.Chapter 2 describes the application of the diene-regenerative Diels-Alder reaction to the synthesis of functionalised 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines bearing aromatic substituents at the C(5)-position. This strategy provides access to a number of compounds that would be difficult to generate using existing methods for 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline synthesis. The diene-regenerative Diels-Alder reaction was tolerant to a broad range of substrates in terms of both sterics and electronic character. Furthermore, the reaction was used to prepare a 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline containing three contiguous synthetic handles in the form of an aryl silane, aryl bromide and aryl ether.In Chapter 3, the use of the diene-regenerative Diels-Alder reaction in the preparation of carbocylic compounds is discussed. Ten 1,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalenes were prepared in this manner. One of these compounds was selected as a model substrate and subjected to a variety of conditions to illustrate the broad spectrum of reactivity these 1,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydronaphthalenes exhibit. This enabled the synthesis of a variety of highly functionalised molecules containing a decalin scaffold.A summary of the work described in this thesis, and the future directions for the project, is provided in Chapter 4. ▼ This work describes results obtained from TEM, TED and HREM studies of MBE and MOCVD InAS_ySb₁_-_y, MOCVD In_xGa₁_-_xAs, MOCVD InP_ySb₁_-_y and MOCVD GaP_ySb₁_-_y layers which were grown over a wide range of conditions. These semiconductor layers are of considerable importance for a variety of applications in optoelectronic and high-speed devices. TEM/TED investigations showed that phase separation occurs in MBE InAsSb layers, resulting in two phases with platelet structures ~5 to ~200nm thick approximately parallel to the layer surface. Phase separation was dependent on growth temperature and layer composition. Anisotropic geometry of the platelets was observed when viewed in the [110] and [110] directions. The compositions of the two phases were derived by TED and EDX analyses. A model for the phase-separated layers was proposed based on the presence of a miscibility gap and using the lateral and island growth mechanisms. TEM results of InGaAs, InPSb and GaPSb layers showed a fine scale modulated contrast (8-20nm in scale) which is a characteristic of alloy clustering occurring by spinodal decomposition, and a fine scale speckle contrast (4-5nm in scale). TEM/TED studies showed that [110] diffuse intensity lines in [001] TED patterns of InGaAs are not related to the fine scale modulated contrast but to the fine scale speckle contrast. It was concluded that a fine scale modulated contrast due to alloy clustering coexists with a fine scale speckle contrast associated with static atomic displacements from the average lattice in InGaAs. For InPSb and GaPSb, a fine needle-like contrast was also observed, which corresponds to diffuse streaks in the [110] patterns. This fine needle-like contrast was attributed to segregation of atoms at missing rows of atoms in the reconstructed growing surface. TED investigations revealed CuPt-type ordering in some of the InGaAs, InAsSb and InPSb layers. Regardless of alloy systems and growth conditions, the ordering occurred on only two of the four possible {111} variants. The degree of ordering was strongly dependent on growth conditions. Two variants of the ordered regions in InGaAs nucleated separately. TED/HREM studies of the ordered structure in InGaAs revealed a direct relationship between the inclination and elongation of superlattice spots and the morphology of anti-phase boundaries present within the domains. Two competing processes of surface-induced ordering, and bulk-induced disordering within a transition region, were considered to interpret the growth condition dependence of the ordering in InGaAs. A model for the ordering observed was proposed based on the surface reconstruction mechanism. MBE InAsSb strained layer superlattices (SLSs) were examined by TEM and HREM techniques. ▼ The purpose of this project was to study the antioxidant potential of selected Namibian Leafy Vegetables (NLV), using Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid contents (TFC) as well as Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and Reducing Power (RP) assays. The study also aimed at detecting and characterizing eight phenolic acids (4-hydroxybenzoic, trans-ferulic, vanillic, gallic, syringic, sinapic and para-coumaric acids) using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirteen leafy vegetables collected from Kavango East Region were identified as: Hibiscus sabdarifa, Aeschynomene nambalensis, Hibiscus cannbinus, Oxygonum delagoense, Amaranthus thunbergii, Amaranthus hypochondriacus, Vigna unguiculata, Cleome gynandra, Cucurbita maxima, Lagenaria siceraria, Aeschynomene fluitans, Citrullus lanatus, and Corchorus tridens. Organic extracts were prepared using aqueous methanol, ethanol and acetone solvents. Acid and Base hydrolyses were employed for extraction of bound phenolic acids which were analysed by GC-MS. The best yields for each assay were as follows: TPC: methanol: 333.8±2.7μgGAE/g in H. sabdarifa. TFC: methanol: 166.0±0.6μgQE/g in A. nambalensis. DPPH assay: methanol: 79.3±0.6% in H. cannbinus. ABTS assay: ethanol: 98.8±0.2% in H. sabdarifa. RP assay: ethanol: 1227.5±106.2% of L. siceraria. GC-MS detected phenolic acids in twenty extracts of Base Hydrolysed Samples (BHS), seven extracts of Acid Hydrolysed Samples (AHS) and thirteen extracts of Non-Hydrolysed Samples (NHS). BHS yielded the most phenolic acids among the three extraction methods, with highest yields of p-coumaric acid in A. nambalensis (53.1μg/g). Results obtained from the TPC, TFC and antioxidant assays showed that the selected NLVs are potential sources of phenolic compounds and antioxidants. GC-MS analysis indicate that this tool can be used for characterizing phenolic acids. This projects’ work has contributed to our understanding of the phytochemical constituents of the selected NLVs and further studies are recommended on the possible industrial application of the identified phenolic acids.

▼ The main objective of this study is to develop a rapid, reliable test method to determine the aggregate reactivity due to alkali-silica reaction (ASR) with respect to the overall alkalinity of the concrete. A volumetric change measurement device (VCMD) developed at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute was used in this research. The VCMD simulates the aggregate-pore solution reaction in concrete and measures free solution volume contraction due to ASR over time. The solution volume change over time at multiple temperatures was modeled to determine ASR compound activation energy (CAE) based on the Arrhenius equation. The CAE-based test can reliably predict aggregate alkali silica reactivity in a short period of time (5 days) in terms of measuring CAE. A representative CAE can be determined by testing as-received aggregates (i.e., field aggregates) with 0.5N NaOH (NH) + Ca(OH)2 (CH) solution (similar to concrete pore solution) and with permissible repeatability. A CAE-based aggregate classification system is developed, which can serve as a potential screening parameter in an aggregate quality control program. A relationship between CAE and alkalinity is also developed, which became the basis to determine threshold alkalinity (THA). The proposed method has the potential to be considered as an alternative method to the current ASR test methods (e.g., accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT)). An effective way of tailoring ASR mix design depending on the level of protection needed is developed based on CAE, THA, pore solution alkalinity (PSA), and concrete validation testing. An accelerated concrete cylinder test (ACCT) using VCMD at 60?C is developed with no involvement of errors due to operation and temperature change along with arresting alkali leaching to test concrete mixes in a short time. Composite spherical and finite element modeling where relevant gel properties and free strain of ASR are the main inputs were developed for prediction of the measured linear ACCT expansion in a pure phase system as a proof of concept. An expansion limit of 0.04% using 0.82% Na2O equivalent (Na2Oe) cement without alkali boosting after a testing period of 28 days is proposed for the ACCT to diagnose ASR aggregate reactivity. The ACCT method has the ability to emerge as a potential method to test job mix and to validate the ASR-resistant mix design. Advisors/Committee Members: Zollinger, Dan G. Nos últimos anos a indústria de semicondutores, nomeadamente a produção de memórias, tem sofrido uma grande evolução. A necessidade de baixar custos de produção, assim como de produzir sistemas mais complexos e com maior capacidade, levou à criação da tecnologia WLP (Wafer Level Packaging). Esta tecnologia permite a produção de sistemas mais pequenos, simplificar o fluxo do processo e providenciar uma redução significativa do custo final do produto. A WLP é uma tecnologia de encapsulamento de circuitos integrados quando ainda fazem parte de wafers (bolachas de silício), em contraste com o método tradicional em que os sistemas são individualizados previamente antes de serem encapsulados. Com o desenvolvimento desta tecnologia, surgiu a necessidade de melhor compreender o comportamento mecânico do mold compound (MC - polímero encapsulante) mais especificamente do warpage (empeno) de wafers moldadas. O warpage é uma característica deste produto e deve-se à diferença do coeficiente de expansão térmica entre o silício e o mold compound. Este problema é observável no produto através do arqueamento das wafers moldadas. O warpage de wafers moldadas tem grande impacto na manufatura. Dependendo da quantidade e orientação do warpage, o transporte, manipulação, bem como, a processamento das wafers podem tornar-se complicados ou mesmo impossíveis, o que se traduz numa redução de volume de produção e diminuição da qualidade do produto. Esta dissertação foi desenvolvida na Nanium S.A., empresa portuguesa líder mundial na tecnologia de WLP em wafers de 300mm e aborda a utilização da metodologia Taguchi, no estudo da variabilidade do processo de debond para o produto X. A escolha do processo e produto baseou-se numa análise estatística da variação e do impacto do warpage ao longo doprocesso produtivo. A metodologia Taguchi é uma metodologia de controlo de qualidade e permite uma aproximação sistemática num dado processo, combinando gráficos de controlo, controlo do processo/produto, e desenho do processo para alcançar um processo robusto. Os resultados deste método e a sua correta implementação permitem obter poupanças significativas nos processos com um impacto financeiro significativo. A realização deste projeto permitiu estudar e quantificar o warpage ao longo da linha de produção e minorar o impacto desta característica no processo de debond. Este projecto permitiu ainda a discussão e o alinhamento entre as diferentes áreas de produção no que toca ao controlo e a melhoria de processos. Conseguiu–se demonstrar que o método Taguchi é um método eficiente no que toca ao estudo da variabilidade de um processo e otimização de parâmetros. A sua aplicação ao processo de debond permitiu melhorar ou a fiabilidade do processo em termos de garantia da qualidade do produto, como ao nível do aumento de produção.
