▼ This paper analysis the levels of total factor productivity and
competitiveness of Ethiopian textile and garment industries in sight from medium and large scale firms over the period 2001-2005. In this regard, textile and garment sub-sector plays an important role in industrialization and economic development. Despite its importance for industrialization, the Ethiopian textile and garment sub-sector has not shown encouraging sign both in terms of productivity and
competitiveness. Hence, the general objective of this study aimed at analyzing the level of total factor productivity and
competitiveness of Ethiopian textile and garment sub-sector using secondary data from central statistical agency of Ethiopian which covers five years period. The study considered 17 textile and 8 garment sample firms.
In the analysis, the study employed stochastic frontier production function model and unit cost ratio method. The study made use of a computer program frontier version 4.1c and stata version 9 as a tool for analysis. The results of the analysis revealed that the level of total factor productivity and
competitiveness capacity of the sub-sector is not good. On average, technical progress, technical efficiency and scale efficiency (economies of scale) declined by -34%, -25% and -1.3% per annum over the study period, respectively. The negative change of these efficiencies resulted in negative total factor productivity growth. So, the contribution of total factor productivity to output growth is found -60.3% per annum. With regard to competitive capacity, all the four digit groups of manufacturing activities in the sub-sector prove to be uncompetitive even in the domestic market.
From this analysis, therefore, it would be probably drawn that the growth of the sub-sector is pulled back by total factor productivity growth & failed to compete both in domestic and international market as a result of increasing trends in technical regress, technical and scale inefficiencies as well as cost ineffectiveness. This is, perhaps, a reflection of firm level weakness with mediocre product design, use of backward machineries, limited international exposure and passive reaction to competitive products. Thus, textile and garment firms ought to family work in addressing their weakness and adjust themselves with the challenges of the changing global environment. Government should also play its supportive role in terms of ensuring fairly competitive domestic market, providing market and technology information, supporting trainings and minimizing transaction costs related to the provision of its services.

▼ The airline industry has grown rapidly over the past few decades, recording a ten-fold rise in
passenger numbers and a fourteen-fold increase in cargo volumes. This growth has created
overwhelming value to airline passengers, employees, suppliers and the broader economy.
Unfortunately, this industry has been affected by terrorism attacks, wars, revolutions, pandemic
fears, earthquakes, volcanoes, failing economies and skyrocketing fuel prices all of which have
negatively impacted on profitability and resulted in intense competition. Consequently, airlines
have spent the last decade in survival mode having to adapt to harsh changes.
Air Zimbabwe, a state-run organisation which operates in this highly regulated and turbulent
industry, is faced with numerous micro and macro environmental challenges and has been
purposively selected for this study. According to company statistics, the airline’s annual
passenger uplifts have declined from a peak of over 1 million in the 1990s to less than 200 000
in 2011, with revenue generation declining in correlation. Whilst Air Zimbabwe has experienced
depressed demand for its services, competitor airlines are recording brisk business. The aim of
this study was to investigate how a struggling organisation, which operates in a turbulent
environment, can improve its
competitiveness and profitability by better understanding the
impact of industry role players and adapting organisational strategies to industry variations.
This study examined, from the point of view of the industry players themselves, the extent to
which customers, suppliers, competitors, regulatory authorities, substitute products and new
entrants have impacted on the
competitiveness and profitability of the airline. Major findings
reveal that an organisation cannot operate in isolation and be competitive or profitable, but
constantly needs to analyse the industry environment in which it operates in and to amicably
interact with other industry role players. The research outlines the need for competition in
certain areas and cooperation in others.

▼ The topic of renewables and their effect on economies is widely discussed in the world. Are the methods which are used towards the transition adequate and how will these attempts affect the economies of countries which are undertaking a leading role in changing to renewables? Is it true that using renewables makes economies more competitive? Or is it just coincidence that most of the competitive countries are using more of them?
These are the main questions that I want to answer, or give a clearer picture of, during the pages of my thesis, with an emphasis on Germany and its special law and policy concerning renewables.

▼ Abstract: This research examines gender differences in willingness to compete with differing incentives . The results of previous experiments show that women are significantly less competitive, even when they perform equally well as men. However, in these experiments cash was the only incentive provided. Therefore, we investigate what happens to gender differences in willingness to compete when we switch the incentive from cash to non-cash prize. Similar to Cassar, Whordofa, and Zhang (2016) who found that women become equally competitive as men when incentive is related to wellbeing of their children, we find that the gender gap in
competitiveness still exists when a gender neutral incentive is offered, but women are significantly more willing to compete at significantly higher rates for a gender-specific cosmetic store voucher relative to cash.

Konceptualiojoje darbo dalyje nagrinėjama konkurencingumo samprata,
išskirti konkurencingumo vertinimo metodai, dažniausiai
konkurencingumo vertinimui naudojami rodikliai, apžvelgti pramonės
sektoriaus konkurencingumo didinimo būdai. Analitinėje –
tiriamojoje dalyje analizuoti sektoriaus konkurencingumo rodikliai:

▼ The dominance of global markets has created a need
for organisations to search for a new set of competences to enable
them to survive into the future. Whether they operate in local or
international markets, global challenges are felt in every
business. Research posits global mindset as a prerequisite for
internationalisation, but there is emerging debate about whether
global mindset is also a competence required for companies perform
and compete in a local context as well. This is a qualitative and
largely descriptive study that was conducted in two companies. The
primary research was undertaken using electronic surveys. These
were structured questionnaires used to obtain data to ascertain
global mindset maturity, performance and
competitiveness. Secondary
data was used for actual performance and
competitiveness measures.
Two propositions out of the three were supported. The global
mindset factors in a local context fall within the bounds of the
three core global mindset themes. Global mindset maturity was found
to be significant in the performance of an organisation in a local
context. However, the relationship between global mindset and
competitive was not explained by the results. Contextual global
mindset was the most significant variable in explaining the
variation in performance.

▼ How do presidential candidates allocate campaign resources within the framework of the Electoral College? Despite the abundance of research on presidential resource allocation strategies, we still do not have a complete answer to this
question. This paper argues that the availability of information that campaigns have at their disposal are a key component in understanding candidate allocations throughout the course of an election. If we operate with the belief that competitiveness
influences presidential campaign strategies, then we must also consider how these strategies are subject to change based upon competitiveness levels. As the election progresses, the information that candidates have regarding states' competitiveness will
become more available. Specifically, candidates will have access to more state polls. I argue that candidates are more likely to formulate allocation strategies in response to polling data during the post-convention period of the election while
candidates should be more likely to allocate resources based upon the previous election during the pre-convention period. Once candidates acquire more information, I argue that they should then expend more resources in competitive states (since they will
be operating with more certainty). I find evidence supporting my hypotheses, with the exception of the 2008 election. Additionally, since a higher level of information allows candidates to identify which states are the most crucial to their chances of
winning, I expect for presidential candidates to allocate to fewer states during the post-convention period. However, the findings do not clearly support this expectation.

Building Frameworks for Competitiveness and Innovation: Identification of Strategies and Tactics to Aid the Performance Textile Industry.

▼ The purpose of this research study was to analyze the performance textile industry in North Carolina in order to identify indicators needed to build a
competitiveness framework that companies can use to benchmark themselves. Another purpose of this research was to evaluate new product innovation techniques and identify the strategies used to successfully bring a new product to market. Frameworks for
competitiveness and innovation were developed to better understand the critical areas facing performance textile companies.
Performance textiles are defined as textile materials and products manufactured primarily for their technical and performance properties in addition to their aesthetic or decorative characteristics (definition adapted from various sources, including ‘technical textiles’ definition from Horrocks & Anand, 2000 and Nelson, 2008). These materials are a growing sector of the global textile industry. World market expectations for the textile industry are projected at $122 billion in 2010 (IFAI Webinar, 2009). In the United States, specialty fabrics are seeing a slight decline due to the current economy. Innovation is key for U.S. companies to stay competitive. There are many types of innovations; however, the ones most examined in this study are the radical, or disruptive, innovations, which are defined as innovations that create new market categories that are making their first appearance in any form (Moore, 2005).
The conceptual models used in this study provide frameworks that will aid companies in their
competitiveness. New product innovation is a critical step in global
competitiveness. Models that were analyzed in this study include Dany Jacob’s Lifecycle of Innovation (Jacobs, 2007), Geoffrey Moore’s Innovation Types Model (Moore, 2005), and the Textile Added Value Curve (Cassill et al, 2006). Each model involves innovation throughout the product lifecycle. Jacob identifies a “chasm†in the early stage of innovation, through which innovations must cross to gain acceptance. However, the chasm, or “gate,†is an area where many promising radical innovations collapse (Jacobs, 2007). Both models acknowledge the presence of a gate that products must cross. This study attempted to analyze how to get across the gate.
The methodology used in this study focused on a qualitative approach to gathering information to answer the research objectives. Convenience sampling of North Carolina performance textile companies was used to create a list of participants for focus groups, both physically at the College of Textiles and also electronically. Participants were asked to complete data collection instruments to build the
competitiveness and innovation frameworks according to their own opinions. Results were analyzed and compared to the existing frameworks in order to validate their soundness and make refinements.
Results from the study showed that of the 270 companies in the performance textile industry, 33% are flourishing, 45% are…

▼ The dominance of global markets has created a need for
organisations to search for a new set of competences to enable them
to survive into the future. Whether they operate in local or
international markets, global challenges are felt in every
business. Research posits global mindset as a prerequisite for
internationalisation, but there is emerging debate about whether
global mindset is also a competence required for companies perform
and compete in a local context as well. This is a qualitative and
largely descriptive study that was conducted in two companies. The
primary research was undertaken using electronic surveys. These
were structured questionnaires used to obtain data to ascertain
global mindset maturity, performance and
competitiveness. Secondary
data was used for actual performance and
competitiveness measures.
Two propositions out of the three were supported. The global
mindset factors in a local context fall within the bounds of the
three core global mindset themes. Global mindset maturity was found
to be significant in the performance of an organisation in a local
context. However, the relationship between global mindset and
competitive was not explained by the results. Contextual global
mindset was the most significant variable in explaining the
variation in performance.

▼ The purpose of the wood furniture manufacturing analysis is to assess the current
competitiveness of
the sub-sector and the main opportunities for moving from the current relative inefficiency and low
competitiveness to reach a competitive production level in the medium and long term future. This
research provides a model with systemic function in order to analyze the relationship between
different factors those have a core value to improve the
competitiveness. Since there is no
common consensuses and there is no perfectly fit the situation of the Ethiopian furniture
manufacturing sector, new model is developed to fill the gap, the developed model is highly
suitable for describing and analyzing the
competitiveness of this manufacturing sector. System
dynamics simulation techniques and Any logic simulation software have been used to study the
relationship of the variables and to evaluate the developed scenarios. This research work finally
approve that the new alternative model is better suited to study the
competitiveness of this
manufacturing sector.

▼ This research work shows how to secure a competitive position using a systematic
approach of TMS. A TMS approach is used to customize the general TMS model to the
context of companies, analyze gaps, map the position of companies, and implement
measures to minimize the gaps and thus improve
competitiveness. Though the GoE is
promoting the EFI as a priority area to improve the export market of the nation, the result
achieved proves that the sub-sector is not competitive in the global market. Thus, the
main objective of this study is to assess the performance of the EFI, identify problems
and recommend solutions to enhance their performance and global
competitiveness using
a TMS approach. Two surveys have been conducted to accomplish the objectives of the
research. A preliminary survey is to customize the general TMS model to the context of
EFI. Four footwear companies which have been given due attention by the GoE for
export market are considered in the study. The result exposes that the appropriate TMS
model customized for EFI has five pillar areas underpinned by twelve foundation stones.
The second survey is a self-analysis exercise accomplished with the help of structured
questionnaire consisting of 166 questions. The result of this analysis shows three major
outcomes: there is a large performance gap between EFI and those industries which
implemented best practices and performances, the present position of the EFI is plodder
and each of the major foundation stones are weak and associated with company-wide
problems. Best international practices and performances have to be adapted to strengthen
the foundation stones and improve the global
competitiveness of EFI. In order to
implement these best international practices and performances, the improvement strategy
required has been verified to be BPR accompanied by a CI strategy. Accordingly, a BPR
implementation guideline model consisting of 7 phases have been developed for EFI.
This study shows how efficiency in manufacturing can be achieved and how eventually a
company can become competitive in the global market by attaining best practices and
performances in both primary and supportive activities. Achieving competitive edge
requires total, not piecemeal manufacturing solutions. I hope that this thesis is a blueprint
for manufacturing innovation and a breakthrough in performance improvement.

▼ The operating environment for business has become very volatile and dynamic following increased innovation and globalization. This has meant that organizations have to constantly be ready to develop and implement new strategies that would boost their competitiveness. One of the strategies that companies have adopted is diversification wherein a company tries to increase profitability through increased sales volume from new products and new markets. The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of diversification strategies on the competitiveness of Safaricom (K) Limited. The research used a case study approach to give an in-depth understanding of the diversification as a competitive strategy by Safaricom Company Limited in Kenya. Primary data was collected from 5 senior managers using an interview guide and data collected was analysed using content analysis. Data was then organized into various thematic areas so as to build a profile on how Safaricom Limited has used diversification as a competitive strategy and a report generated to show how successful Safaricom has applied diversification strategy as a competitive strategy. The study established diversification had been a key factor in the success of Safaricom and that the innovative culture within the organization had highly contributed to the success of the diversification strategy. The study also established that through diversification, the company has been able to increase its revenue streams and hence increased profitability. This study concluded that one of the contributing factors to the success had been diversification. The innovative culture within the organization had highly contributed to the success of the diversification strategy where new products and services that appeal to their customers have been launched to suit different market segments. It was also concluded that through diversification, the company had been able to increase its revenue streams and hence increased profitability. The study recommends that the company should continuously review its diversification strategies guided by the market dynamics so as to stay ahead of competition and that the company should continuously encourage innovation among its employees by reward innovative ideas. The respondents were reluctant to give information on strategy since it is at the core of design of the future of an organization and creating a competitive advantage over competitors. The researcher proposed that further studies ought to be carried out to investigate the relationship between innovation and the success of diversification strategies. Moreover, a more detailed study needs to be carried out to investigate the influence of diversification strategies amongst other telecommunication companies in Kenya.

▼ Dynamic environment changes impact on organizations goals and objectives and this makes it difficult for organizations to remain viable. To be able therefore to stay ahead of competition, it is imperative for the organizations to continually scan the environment so that the organizations adjust their strategic responses to address the demands of the environment. The appropriate response strategies guarantee a competitive edge that ensures the organizations remain relevant. The study was set to establish the effects of strategic responses adapted by BASF East Africa Limited to increased competitive conditions in the market with the changes in the agrichemical industry. The study adopted a case study design. Primary data obtained was qualitative and was collected by the use of interview guides which was administered to the correspondents face to face. The interview respondents were the regional manager for East Africa, marketing manager and the country managers for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Data collected was analyzed by way of content analysis. The major findings of the study were that strategic responses which are well developed and appropriately adopted are powerful tools. It is evident that BASF East Africa Limited has responded to the challenges arising from the competitive conditions in the market. BASF East Africa Limited needs to be more diligent in environment scanning and be proactive in formulating strategies that meet and preempt any anticipated adverse changes spinning out of its operating environment. Dynamic environment changes impact on organizations goals and objectives and this makes it difficult for organizations to remain viable. To be able therefore to stay ahead of competition, it’s imperative for the organizations to continually scan the environment so that the organizations adjust their strategic responses to accommodate the demands of the environment. The study recommended that in order to stay ahead of competition, commercial banks should continuously scan the environment aggressively and speed up implementation of various strategies. The study similarly did not consider the process of implementing the strategic responses adopted by the organization as a whole but focused on strategic responses adopted by the organization in increasing competitive conditions in the market. This is a limitation since it ought to have considered the strategy responses process as a whole. That is, from strategic objectives setting, planning, analysis and choice, implementation and evaluation. Thirdly, the study did not consider the role of regulation and policy framework in the manufacturing industry in increasing competitive conditions in the industry hence serving as a limitation. A study can be carried out to establish whether strategic responses in the manufacturing firms in Kenya are similar. This will give an indication of responses made by the manufacturing firms in Kenya to their changing competitive situation and hence allow industry generalizations to be made. These generalizations can be used as…

▼ Despite policy efforts to diversify exports, Kenya’s export base is still largely dominated by primary products from the agricultural sector. Trade and commodity concentration has led to export earnings fluctuations which eventually leads to the problem of balance of payments, budgets deficits and does not permit future systematic economic planning. With dwindling fortunes in the agricultural sector due to vagaries of weather among others, it is imperative for policy makers to deal with the issue of diversification of the country’s exports. This will help cushion the country against shocks arising from the instability in the foreign exchange markets especially for the primary products. This strategy will contribute to the development of new export markets for manufactured goods destined for the EAC.
By using panel data this paper investigated factors influencing competitiveness of Kenya’s manufactured exports to the EAC. The primary concern of policy makers and macroeconomic analysts is what factors promote or inhibit the flow of Kenya’s manufactured exports to the EAC.
The findings indicate that trade policy, captured by openness and nominal exchange has a large effect on export competitiveness, their coefficients are large. However, fixed capital formation which is a proxy for trade facilitation has a small effect on export competitiveness. Infrastructural development is not playing the rightful role in releasing export potential of the trading bloc; hence is a bottle neck on the export supply side.
The national government should have a policy of infrastructural investment like construction of corridors and upgrading of railway system to increase accessibility and ease the movement of manufactured exports. Unit labour cost has a negative effect on export competiveness. EAC member countries are labour abundant and therefore productivity of labour is more important than numbers. The member countries should invest in research and development, health care, education and capital equipment to increase labour productivity that lower unit labour cost thereby increasing competitiveness of manufactured goods.
Therefore, manufactured exports are important for Kenya’s export matrix. It is therefore critical for the GOK and policy makers to work towards accelerating policies that will improve the volume of exports of manufactured goods to the EAC while drawing lessons from Asian tigers.

▼ There is a new wave of optimism across Africa with the advent of open market and support of private enterprise by many governments after years of a tight public sector led development. Accompanying the euphoria of entrepreneurship is the phenomenon of tech start-ups. The study of tech-start-ups is still in its nascent stages in academic circles on the continent. There is limited literature on the prospects tech start-ups can have on socioeconomic development in Africa. As a result, this study was centred at finding role-played by tech start-ups on the socioeconomic development in Ghana in particular. The study employed the qualitative research methodology and relied on semi-structured interviews and observation to gain more insights into Ghana’s start-up ecosystem from major stakeholders in different components of the tech start-up ecosystem in Ghana. There was also a review of the relevant literature on the topic. The study found that the major roles of tech start-ups in Ghana are harnessing innovation, creation of jobs, and increased competition for firms. The major challenges that are obstacles to the prospects of tech start-ups were identified by the study included poor infrastructure, financial constraints, unfavourable regulations and an immature ecosystem. The study proposed recommendations which included the need to have more academic research on the significance of tech start-ups to Ghana’s development, the need for tech entrepreneurs to explore crowdfunding as a solution to their financial constraints and the need for annual reports on the state of the Ghanaian tech start-up ecosystem to help identify progress made and challenges. It is imperative to find solutions to these challenges to improve upon the ecosystem in Ghana and enhance their global competitiveness.

▼ For the Cyprus Manufacturing Industry, previously committed to the production of medium quality standard products, the increased and changing nature of competitive pressures represents a fundamental challenge. The major problems the Cyprus manufacturing industry is facing appear to be labour shortages, together with low product competitiveness and poor production organization. It is widely believed that the introduction of Advanced Manufacturing technologies (AMTs) offers a means of resolving the above problems but their implementation is a risky venture. The main objective of the study was to examine the implementation of AMTs in the Cyprus Manufacturing Industry, identify the factors leading to successful application of these technologies and based on these factors develop an integrated process plan to facilitate their successful implementation. A survey was conducted on a sample of 40 companies using personal interviews based on a purpose designed comprehensive questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed the international trends in the management and implementation of AMT. Successes and failures have been considered in terms of the Technical, Manufacturing and the Business aspects and influences of each technology. It has been found that the most important factors contributing to the successful implementation of AMT were the level of long term planning, the fitness level of AMT in the existing processes and the attention given to infrastructure preparation and human resource development. Based on the success factors identified an integrated planning model has been developed. The model incorporates all the planning procedures and implementation parameters to be followed in order to ensure successful AMT adoption and implementation. The model addresses the three main stages of AMT adoption and implementation: (a) the planning phase, (b) the selection, transfer and pre-implementation phase and (c) the post implementation phase. For each phase the steps to be followed are fully explored and analysed. Finally the usefulness of the model in facilitating the successful application of AMT is illustrated through two case studies.

▼ There is also a growing interest from African policy makers- practitioners on how best to configure their national systems of innovation in their respective countries. Many countries including Botswana and Namibia, have embraced the concept of national systems of innovation into their national policies for science, technology and innovation. The study did literature review on theories, models and characteristics of National Systems of Innovation, including science, technology and Innovation (STI) policies from both countries and how these STI policies drive wealth creation as well as outlining challenges faced in implementing the STI polices, aspects of university industry linkages and role of government in creating an enabling environment. The methodology adopted by the study was Mixed Method research design which was a pragmatic philosophical worldview of explanatory sequential mixed methods that compared Botswana’s and Namibia’s National Systems of Innovation for economic competitiveness. This study presented findings of a comparative analysis of innovation systems for national economic competitiveness for Botswana and Namibia by concluding that, lack of evidence-based STI policies developed with clear implementation plans, weak linkages between industry and higher education institution, including research institutes fragmented systems or nodes of innovation, hampers economic growth and development. Finally, the study recommended for policy cohesiveness that encourages consistency in governance and coordination of science and technology portfolios to promote social innovations, strengthening linkages between governments, higher education institution & industry, support physical infrastructure for research & development, through committing funds for the procurement of equipment needed by scientists and technicians in both countries. The study has both practical and academic importance. Firstly, it provides solutions to questions constantly asked by academic practitioners and policy makers on how to customize the concept of a National System of Innovation, which is modelled on knowledge-based economies to an African situation and how it helps nations gain national economic competitiveness. Secondly, the study contributes to the body of knowledge by generating literature and closing the knowledge gap on the application of the innovation system concept to resource-based economies like Botswana and Namibia.

▼ Leadership coaching has grown to become a significant intervention to respond to the management needs of an increasingly complex organisational environment. The substantial investment in leadership coaching corresponds with current accountability trends, raising the profile of evaluation; however, evidence shows that organisations treat evaluation in this context as being of low strategic value, characterised as limited and problematic, both operationally and strategically. Specifically, whereas evaluation has primarily focused on current organisational imperatives and financial targets, there is also evidence of the increasing emphasis on a new set of leadership behaviours to achieve competitiveness through adaptive capacities characterised by complex decision-making which balances short term outcomes in known circumstances with longer term capacity building in unknown contexts. In response, this study adopts ambidexterity (the adaptive capacity to balance shortterm-known and long-term-unknown demands) as a conceptual lens to examine the evaluation of leadership coaching and used in depth semi-structured interviews with 12 senior practitioners engaged in this area. The study found multiple incongruences between espoused strategic priorities and evaluation practice in-use, and identified apparent moderators that influence evaluation practice in-use. As such, an exploration of moderators contributed fresh insights into barriers and enablers, including six new dimensions for evaluation problematics, and seven promising movements with implications for practice. More generally, this study also asserts that the lens of ambidexterity presents new opportunities for an expansive exploration of evaluation in terms of a wider strategic contribution and, accordingly, suggests the dimensions of an ambidextrous framework, simultaneously pursuing a workable system that is also strategically helpful.

▼ China has become the second largest pharmaceutical market since 2014 and its industry is highlighted as the most attractive in the emerging countries. However, its specialities are rooted in historic reasons and the current dynamic situation in addition to the uniqueness of the pharmaceutical industry, make it complicated and unclear to market participants. On the other side, a lack of serious and systematic academic research about the competitiveness of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry, and the existent studies still wander at an entry level or dispersive areas further make those participants hardly stand at a higher position to draw out their strategy for a long-run. This research starts from the definitive discussion of competitive advantages in the pharmaceutical industry, and a review of various capabilities or competencies (classified as drivers to competitive advantage) at different stages of the drug lifecycle process especially related to the Chinese pharmaceutical industry. Based on these, we designed the competitiveness conceptual framework by combining traditional competitive mechanism and 'environment-strategy-performance' model. A further study builds upon the mixed method approach with elite interviews and a structured survey. Qualitative analysis on the elite interview data provides a systematic description on the Chinese pharmaceutical industry, and also links the dispersive research results from previous studies about the competitiveness of this industry. Together with a chronological review on the evolution of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry since 1949, Pearson's chi-square analysis based on survey data draws out a broad picture about this industry, not only from a historic point of view and a static anatomy of current status: principles of its regulatory system, regulatory influence on innovation, safety and risk management, cost and availability; but also from the strategic group's perspective to explore the competitive landscape by their heterogeneities and homogeneities analysis on behaviour patterns, including major investment in the past five years, causes of today's success (failure), perception on future's challenges, as well as future strategy selection. Data from the survey also demonstrates how the mechanism operates and influences Chinese pharmaceutical firm's strategy selection for future development. Using principal component analysis (PCA) and multinomial logistic regression (MLR), this research builds a strategy selection model to identify these significant factors for each fundamental strategy that the Chinese pharmaceutical firms will select for their future, and to illustrate dynamic conduction among environmental factors, drivers to competitive advantage and strategy selection. This research commits to build a bridge on the gap between part and the whole of current academic research about the competitiveness of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry, and the gap between the superficialness and depth of it also.

▼ This thesis contains three essays exploring demographic and technological challenges to environmental sustainability. Chapter 1 theoretically and empirically investigates the impact on government environmental expenditure of the divergent policy preferences of young and old generations, taking into account two distinct though interrelated aspects of population ageing: increased longevity and a rise in the proportion of individuals aged over 65 years. An implication of the overlapping generations model presented in this chapter is that a heightened preference for environmental care expenditure among the young dominates the preference of the older generation for higher transfer payments and lower environmental expenditure. To test this theoretical result, I employ a panel data set containing observations on a diverse set of 47 countries. Empirical results provide clear support for the theoretical hypothesis that the proportion of individuals over the age of 65 negatively impacts public spending on the environment, though this effect is overwhelmed by the statistically significant positive effect on environmental expenditure of both longevity and the proportion of the population aged between 15 and 64 years. Chapters 2 and 3 utilise an OECD survey of over 4000 manufacturing facilities to focus on technological facets of environmental sustainability. Chapter 2 investigates the drivers of environmental R&D at the facility level and whether investments in R&D at the industry level are complementary to facility specific investments in green R&D. Broad-based industry R&D intensity and facility R&D intensity are shown to mutually reinforce one another, positively and significantly impacting the proportion of R&D expenditure that a facility devotes to environmental R&D. This is suggestive of positive technology spillovers at the facility level. Chapter 3 explores whether environmental R&D expenditure enhances facility profitability and whether the profitability enhancing effect of environmental R&D is attributable to green innovation. Key among the empirical results is that the proportion of R&D expenditure that a facility devotes to environmental R&D positively and significantly impacts facility profitability. Intriguingly however, this result is not driven by contemporaneous environmental innovation. Rather, it may be that by enhancing the green credentials of a facility, environmental R&D serves to elicit preferential treatment from key stakeholders.

▼ Abstract:
This project is a follow up to Cassar, Wordofa, and Zhang (2015), which aimed at testing whether extending incentives beyond cash would alter the estimated
competitive tendencies of men and women. Here we extend this work to an urban Colombian setting. In the previous study conducted in China, men have proven more competitive than women; however, once the incentive changes to a child-benefitting voucher, women increased their likeliness to compete.
This research uses statistical and regression analysis to test whether or not women become more competitive when competing for a voucher, which directly benefits their child as opposed to cash. The results show that, in this urban Colombian setting, women prove equally competitive to their male counterparts regardless of the incentive. Interestingly, forced displacement proves to be a key determinant of a woman’s desire to compete.
