▼ Fibres in concentrated suspensions are in continuous contact with other fibres and may interlock through elastic bending to form coherent networks. Such interlocking is termed Type-C cohesion. The process by which Type-C cohesion forms among fibres and the resulting structure and tensile strength of individual floes of fibres have been examined in experimental study in which relatively straight, smooth nylon (6-6) fibres of aspect ratios from 65 to 189 were suspended in aqueous-sugar solutions. The fibres were in most cases neutrally buoyant. The suspensions were caused to flow in a partially filled, inclined-to-the-horizontal or horizontally-oriented cylinder rotated about its principal axis to produce a recirculating and moderately unsteady flow. At a well-defined and reproducible "threshold concentration" Type-C coherent floes formed. The floes were verified to be of Type-C by heat treatment. The heat treatment caused stress relaxation in elastically bent fibres resulting in reduced floe strength. Visual observations of floe formation and velocity measurements with Laser Doppler Anemometer indicated that the floes originated in the zone in which flow decelerated. In this zone floes formed by compaction of crowded fibres. The threshold concentration depended on fibre geometry and viscosity of the suspending liquid. Below an aspect ratio of approximately 50 and above a suspending liquid viscosity of approximately 0.013 Pa‧s, Type-C coherent floes did not form at any concentration of fibres. Under the test conditions of this work, the threshold concentration was unaffected by the cylinder rotational speed, cylinder diameter, and angle of incline to the horizontal, provided that sufficient shear was induced in the cylinder to create recirculating flow. The structure and strength of Type-C coherent floes were examined. The number of contact points per fibre was less than values estimated from theoretical, statistical models in the literature. The tensile strength of individual Type-C floes measured in a tester with a unique comb support showed values larger than strengths reported in the literature for either man-made or wood-pulp fibre networks. A mathematical model developed to describe tensile strength based on frictional fibre-to-fibre interaction accounted for only a part of the total floe strength.

Pasirinkta analizės kryptis – nuo funkcijos prie formos – leido ne tik papildyti iki šiol atliktus konektorių lietuvių kalbos tekstuose tyrimus, bet ir atskleisti tų konektorių panašumus ir skirtumus, vartojimo polinkius. Nustatyta, kad gramatinės sakinių siejimo priemonės tiek mokslinio, tiek publicistinio stiliaus tekstuose akivaizdžiai persveria leksines gramatines. Leksinėmis gramatinėmis sakinių siejimo priemonėmis sakiniai siejami be antecedento, todėl siejant sakinius tekste tokiomis priemonėmis aiškumo, logiškumo dėlei pavartojama ir gramatinių siejimo priemonių. Mokslinio stiliaus tekstuose sakinius dažniau linkstama sieti gramatinėmis priemonėmis, kurios dėl savo funkcijų sakinių ryšius daro griežčiau įformintus. Publicistinio stiliaus tekstuose dažniau vartojamos leksinės gramatinės sakinių siejimo priemonės tekstą daro įvairesnį, netrafaretišką. Mokslinio stiliaus tekstuose dėl aprašomų objektų pateikimo principų sakiniams sieti dažniau vartojama sudėjimo ir priežasties konjunkcija. Publicistinio stiliaus tekstuose kohezijos raiška įvairesnė – vartojama ir sudėjimo, ir priešinamoji, ir priežasties, netgi modalinė konjunkcija.

The object of this dissertation is grammatical and lexico-grammatical means of sentence cohesion. This dissertation is the first study which offers a systematic and thorough description of these means in Lithuanian linguistics. The approach adopted in the dissertation – from function to form. It was found that grammatical means of sentence cohesion are much more common than lexico-grammatical means in both scientific and publicistic texts. Lexico-grammatical means of sentence cohesion connect the sentences without the antecedent, therefore, in order to achieve clarity of argumentation in text, additional grammatical means of cohesion are used alongside the lexico-grammatical means. Grammatical means which connect the subsequent sentence with the antecedent in the preceding sentence are more common in scientific texts than in publicistic texts. This way the cohesive ties are made more explicit. While lexico-grammatical means which make the text more varied and less consistent are more characteristic of publicistic texts than scientific texts. In scientific texts, sentences are linked by means of additive and causal conjunction, which is determined by the nature of the presentation of the subject matter. In publicistic texts, however, cohesive means are more varied – alongside additive and causal conjunction, we can find uses of adversative and modal conjunction as well.

▼ While a great deal of theoretical work has been conducted describing group development, there is an underdeveloped area in the examination of the development of a group or team that is faced with constant transition. The purpose of this dissertation is twofold. First, this dissertation seeks to understand how cohesion is developed within a collegiate athletic team that has players come and go each season and, at times, within a season. Second, this dissertation explores how the coaching staff sustained and managed the cohesion within the team. To explore these issues, an ethnographic study was conducted with a Division 1- A, collegiate basketball team called Private U. Over 50 practices were attended and 20 formal interviews were completed. Results showed that cohesion occurred through social and task forms and in varying contexts. The coaching staff, and specifically the head coach, used self-handicapping to protect his players and thereby potentially keeping division from happening among team members. The lens of Symbolic Convergence Theory is utilized to discuss specific cohesion-forming moments during the season. Communication about cohesion transpired through interactions between the coaching staff and the players, and in fact, even between the coaching staff and prospective players who were being recruited to play for Private U. The coaching staff attempted to convey memorable messages and provided legal incentives to recruits because the importance of building cohesion begins with the players that the staff would get to come to Private U. Through on and off-court interactions, the coaching staff managed the cohesion on the team that had been created, but this was not always an easy task. Through the use of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory and Dialectical Theory, I examined how in-groups and out-groups were experienced by some of the players. The desires from Private U team members to compete with their teammates for playing time, but also to want the best result for the team created a dialectical tension for team members that is discussed through the Competition-Cooperation dialectic. ▼ Linking adverbials play an important role in textual cohesion. Applied linguistic studies (e.g. Altenberg & Tapper, 1998; Bolton, Nelson, & Hung, 2002; Chen, 2006) have shown that second language learners have difficulty in using linking adverbials appropriately. Biber, Johansson, Leech, Conrad, and Finegan (1999) is to date the only corpus-based reference grammar book which covers all three aspects of usage patterns of linking adverbials, i.e., form, meaning and position. But as the book provides a very comprehensive grammar, there is not room for a detailed account of all three aspects of usage patterns of a small grammar category such as linking adverbials. Also, the previous literature does not agree upon the terms used to refer to linking adverbials and the linguistic elements referred to by linking adverbials and other related terms. This two-stage study examined research questions of what linking adverbials are and how they are used in different registers using both a qualitative and quantitative approach. In Stage I, a random sample of 67 texts of a total of over 100,000 words from the Wellington Corpora of Written and Spoken New Zealand English (WWC and WSC) were manually analysed, which provided coverage of the target five registers of written academic prose, academic lectures, conversation, written news and broadcast news. In Stage II, the most frequent linking adverbials identified in written registers in Stage I were automatically searched in larger corpora, i.e., the whole WWC, BNC and COCA. The intonation unit was adopted as the analysis unit for spoken data and sound files were needed in deciding intonation units. Thus, automatic search for patterns in spoken data was not viable in Stage II. This study suggests a new definition of linking adverbials and explains the difference between linking adverbials and conjunctions. This study then provides a detailed account of usage patterns of not only the form, meaning and position of linking adverbials but also patterns of types of each form, meaning and position in five registers. Such usage patterns are compared and explained among different written and spoken registers and in different social settings. It is worth noting that a register-specific meaning categorization system and a semantic-pragmatic continuum are suggested in this study. The aforementioned findings contribute to theories of the nature of linking adverbials, and have implications for second language learning and teaching in EAP and ESP contexts and future corpus-based pedagogical grammar studies. ▼ Coherence and incoherence in conversation refer to the relationship between adjacent parts of the conversation (e.g., between one statement and the next, or between one topic and the next). A clear, relevant connection is called coherent; the absence of an obvious connection is incoherent. Coherence and incoherence are therefore central to any analysis of discourse, but, despite many existing theories of coherence and incoherence, there is little empirical knowledge of these phenomena. This dissertation continues the study of coherence began in my master's thesis. In it I propose three axioms to describe the structure of coherence throughout conversations: I. Both coherence and incoherence are necessary for conversation to occur. II. Conversations optimize coherence both globally and locally. III. Coherence is optimized at several different, hierarchical levels of conversation. Because there is already evidence that coherence is maximized at a global level (Black, 1986/1988), I chose to test whether coherence is optimized at a local level. Specifically, local optimization of sequential coherence relations would consist of a series of alternations between coherence and incoherence. I also sought to test this hypothesis at several different levels of conversation (statement, topic, and macrotopic). In order to test the hypothesis, it was necessary to develop a method for segmenting conversations into statements, topics, and macrotopics and a method for measuring the degree of coherence between these segments. Using the guidelines developed, two judges were able to segment conversations at all three levels with high reliability. Similarly, other sets of raters used a magnitude estimation procedure to scale the degree of coherence between units at each of these levels and again achieved high reliability. It was also necessary to develop a time-series analytic technique for verifying the predicted series of alternations in short sequences of data, because existing methods are not applicable to small Ns. The new statistic is based on the geometric properties of a particular data set: it compares the obtained sum of the interior angles facing toward the mean of the data series with the sum of the interior angles facing the mean of all other permutations of these data points. Three getting-acquainted conversations were obtained; these yielded 325 statements (the spoken equivalent of a sentence). After segmentation, coherence scaling, and application of the optimization statistic, there was moderate support for the hypothesis of local optimization. Three quarters of the topics contained sequences of propositions with a sum of interior angles that was smaller than the sum of half of the alternative permutations. At the macrotopic level, however, the hypothesis was not supported. ▼ Purpose: Face-to-face group dynamics-based (GDB) programs have been shown to be effective in promoting group cohesion and physical activity (PA). Recent evidence suggests that GDB principles can be successfully translated to web-based applications to impact group cohesion. The social nature of such applications allows for interactions to occur between friends and strangers alike, potentially moderating the effects of such GDB applications. Optimal group composition within GDB web applications has yet to be determined. The present study examines the moderating effects of group composition in a GDB application on group cohesion and PA. Methods: Participants (n = 166) were randomized into same-sex pairs and then randomly assigned to an experimental condition: stranger (no app), stranger (using app), friend (using app) or individual control. Participants in all conditions performed two sets of planking exercises. In between sets, those in partnered conditions interacted with their partner using a GDB social media app, where they participated in a series of team-building activities. The main dependent variables were group cohesion and physical activity, calculated as the total persistence during Block 2, controlling for Block 1 persistence. Results: Results indicate that the group integration dimensions of cohesion were higher in groups that used the application than those that did not (GI-T: p= .001; GI-S: p= .004). Friends that used the app reported greater cohesion across all dimensions than strangers that did the same (ATG-T: p= .006; ATG-S: p= .003; GI-T: p= .001; GI-S: p< .001). There was also a significant difference in PA (p=.004) between the two app-using conditions. However, there was no significant difference in PA between app using conditions and strangers that did not use the app (p= .495). Conclusions: Group cohesion can be enhanced through the use of an online GDB application. Using an online GDB application with a friend is associated with higher levels of cohesion. Further research is necessary to identify effective online GDB applications for impacting physical activity and cohesion in field settings. Advisors/Committee Members: Brandon Irwin.

▼ Recent musicological output has viewed neither the aesthetic concept of organicism nor the methodology of formalistic music analysis in a favourable light. Both organicism and formalistic music analysis in the current age have been plagued by criticisms concerning its validity, purpose, and function. Thus there has been a decrease in the perceived value and usefulness of both organicism as means of rendering contemporary post-tonal compositions as cohesive entities and music analysis as a means of elucidating such organic musical construction. My aims for my thesis are, at its simplest, two-fold. Drawing upon the aesthetics of organicism and cohesion as seen in Schoenberg’s writings, I aim primarily to espouse both the purpose and effectiveness of organicism as well as music analysis in rendering art music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries comprehensible. I also argue that organicism must be accompanied by contrast in order to maintain musical variety and interest, and I explain how I, as a composer, satisfy these two imperatives in my own compositional output. A comprehensive motivic analysis of selected works from the twentieth century in conjunction with analyses of my own compositions created as part of this degree will not only demonstrate the presence of organicism but will also argue its value in achieving coherence in post-tonal music. Investigating the intervallic properties inherent in the primary musical material of each work will demonstrate the multifaceted ways in which the composer in question takes advantage of these properties to create a work that is simultaneously diverse yet unified in its structure. A consideration of the work’s construction on both the micro and macro scale (that is, the ways in which musical cells both interact and develop on local and global levels) will demonstrate how the composer has generated an organic structural trajectory through the manipulation of a small musical cell; it will also demonstrate how such an organic structure can create meaningful and coherent listenings of the work. I aim to convey the ways in which I and the selected composers develop material to achieve variety whilst maintaining unifying musical elements. I hope to convince the reader of the value of employing a motivic-based approach when composing post-tonal works due to its possibilities of ensuring musical coherence.

▼ The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) calls for education to prepare children for "responsible life in a free society, in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equality of sexes, and friendship among all peoples, ethnic, national and religious groups and persons of indigenous origin" (UN, 1989, p.9). This thesis examines the potential role of Educational Psychologists (EPs) in addressing the UNCRC call to promote community cohesion through their work in schools. A systematic review of recent international research into the effects of psychology-based educational approaches promoting community cohesion was undertaken. The review, structured by the PRISMA framework, identified 13 studies examining the effects of approaches to community cohesion. Analysis of these studies yielded insight into approaches to community cohesion, which may be best promoted through educational approaches that have both knowledge and process-based components and through a multi-level approach, which takes into account the individual and their relationships as well as the relationships between community groups and the individual's participation in their community. An empirical study with an Educational Psychology Service (EPS) in the North West of England was undertaken. This consisted of an Appreciative Inquiry cycle of four focus groups exploring ways in which an EPS could envisage promoting community cohesion. Findings from the empirical study suggest that an EPS supporting community cohesion is facilitated by aspects of current EP practice including values and by EPs knowing their school communities. EPs reflecting on their own positionality regarding community and culture may also be a facilitator. Dissemination to EP practice was considered, both at the research site as well as within the profession more generally. A multi-level approach was generated in which dissemination to practice through journal publication, conference presentations and continued contribution to a working group of regional EPSs was planned alongside dissemination through the design and delivery of training packages for schools. Deliberation over whether adopting a children's rights-based approach could help to maintain focus on community cohesion through times of changing government priorities was discussed. ▼ The major problem in this study was the examination of the differences in mothers’ perceptions of family functioning along the dimensions of cohesion and adaptability between families in mental health treatment and families not in mental health treatment. The FACES tool developed by Olsen et al. (1978) measuring marital and family functioning was used. Olson proposed that family cohesion and adaptability is two major dimension of family functioning and that a balanced level of cohesion and adaptability are most functional to marriages and families. Two parts of Olsen’s Circumflex Model were tested in this study. The two hypotheses derived from Olsen’s model compared mothers’ reports of family cohesion and family adaptability in a treatment and non-treatment group. The treatment and non-treatment groups were used for the purpose of differentiating between healthy and unhealthy families. Hypothesis I stated that there is a significant difference between mothers’ reports of family cohesion in families in treatment and mothers’ reports of family cohesion in families not in treatment. Hypothesis II stated that there is a significant difference between mothers’ reports of family adaptability in families in treatment and mothers’ reports of family adaptability in families not in treatment. The treatment group consisted of twenty-six families selected from the Family Resource and Counseling Unit at Copper Mountain Mental Health Center. Mothers were chosen to represent families. The average family monthly income for the treatment group was !,664.00. A mother completed an average of thirteen years of education and fathers an average of twelve years. The non-treatment group consisted of twenty-five families selected from Salt Lake Count’s Well Baby Clinics. Mothers were chosen to represent families. The average family monthly income for the non-treatment group was 1,251.00. Mothers completed an average of fourteen and a half years. Mothers in each group completed the FACES and a personal data form. Hypothesis I was supported statistically at the .001 level of significance. The treatment group scored as significantly less cohesive than the non-treatment group. The hypothesis was further supported by a multiple regression analysis that indicated that a set of five variables accounted for 61% of the variance in treatment group status, cohesion being the most influential variable. The other four variables were: wife’s education, income, adaptability, and social desirability. Hypothesis II was not supported by a t-test measuring the differences in the adaptability scores of the two groups. However, a multiple regression analysis revealed that adaptability was an important variable differentiating treatment group status as part of a set of five co-variables.

▼ There is a dearth of literature examining how the cohesiveness of the team may be connected to individual athlete participation in youth sport settings. Although results from studies conducted with adult athletes (Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1988; Prapavessis & Carron, 1997a; Spink, 1995) suggest a positive link between perceptions of team cohesion and individual participation, this relationship has not been established with adolescent athletes. The purposes of the studies in this dissertation were: (1) to examine the relationship between cohesion and participation in a youth sport sample; (2) to examine if task cohesion moderated the relationship between perceptions of teammates’ effort levels (descriptive norms) and a participation-related outcome (effort); (3) to experimentally test the combined influence of cohesion and descriptive norms on individual self-reported effort; and (4) to explore the plausibility of teammate support as one possible mediator of the cohesion-participation relationship. A multivariate approach was used in Study 1 to both establish the initial relationship between cohesion and individual participation as well as inform subsequent studies in this dissertation by identifying which specific cohesion factors (task, social) and participation-related outcomes (effort, attendance, intention to return to the team) were most strongly related. Multivariate results revealed that task cohesion was associated with two participation outcomes – effort and intention to return to the team. Examining if perceptions of cohesion would qualify the link between perceptions about how hard teammates were working and individual athletes’ self-reported effort levels was the purpose of Study 2. Both constructs emerged as positive, significant correlates of effort. As a follow up, a between-subjects experimental design with vignettes was used in Study 3 to test the combined effects of cohesion and descriptive norms about teammate effort on individual self-reported effort levels. Building upon Study 2’s correlational findings, cohesion and descriptive norms both had an independent, positive influence on how hard players rated that they would work. The purpose of Study 4 was to consider one possible reason why team cohesion may be associated with individual participation - social support. To examine the proposition that social support may mediate the relationship between cohesion and participation, a prospective design was used in Study 4 to test the links between early-season cohesion, late-season perceptions of social support, and two participation-related outcomes (effort, intention to return to the team in the future). Results supported the plausibility of social support as a partial mediator for both outcomes. Taken together, these four studies provided initial evidence for the potential link between team cohesion and individual participation in youth sport. ▼ Employee stress is a significant issue in the hospitality industry, and it is costly for both employees and employers. This study examined the impact of a specific event on the change trajectories of stress and strain and how group characteristics can shape those trajectories by means of testing several hypotheses that were derived from the literature on affect, stress and strain. Specifically, informed by affective events theory and the homeostatic model of stress, this study investigated how stress predicts strain outcomes, including the need for recovery, emotional exhaustion, and sleep quality, and the change trajectories of stress and strain during a stressful event. In addition, the boundary conditions of group cohesion and group members’ emotional variability were examined. The study gathered data from 69 student participants in a senior level, food production and service management course that involved a stressful event, the hosting of a “theme dinner” to the general public. Data were collected through an experience sampling methodology and analyzed by means of latent growth curve modeling. In line with affective events theory and the homeostatic model of stress, results showed that stress, need for recovery, and emotional exhaustion all displayed negative quadratic (inverted U-shaped) trajectories, and that sleep quality displayed a positive quadratic (U-shaped) trajectory. Group cohesion lowered the initial level of emotional exhaustion and increased the initial level of sleep quality. Group cohesion also flattened the linear trajectory of sleep quality over time. In addition, individuals working with group members with higher levels of emotional variability not only reported higher initial levels of stress, emotional exhaustion and need for recovery, but also higher systematic changes in their need for recovery and emotional exhaustion during the event. The implications of the findings and directions for future research are presented.
