▼ Cognitive adaptability has been conceptualised as the ability to effectively and appropriately change decision policies (i.e. to learn) given feedback (inputs) from the environmental context in which cognitive processing is embedded. Based on a large sample of 2650 established entrepreneurs in South Africa, this study attempts to determine how entrepreneurs cognitively adapt to unpredictable entrepreneurial environments. Multidimensional constructs representing cognitive adaptability and the Big Five personality traits were operationalised and empirically investigated. It was hypothesised that the Big Five personality trait dimensions of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion and agreeableness are positively related to the cognitive adaptability dimensions of goal orientation, metacognitive knowledge, metacognitive experience, and metacognitive choice and monitoring. Neuroticism was hypthesised to be negatively related to the cognitive adaptability dimensions of goal orientation, metacognitive knowledge, metacognitive experience, metacognitive choice and monitoring. Hypotheses were tested using structured equation modelling and correlational and regression analysis. Results provide support for subcomponents of the Big Five personality traits. Intellectual interest (openness to experience), goal striving (conscientiousness), activity (extraversion), prosocial orientation (agreeableness) were found to be positively related to cognitive adaptability. They were found to be negatively related to prior metacognitive knowledge. Self-reproach (neuroticism) was found to be negatively related to cognitive adaptability. It was found to be positively related to prior metacognitive knowledge. This research builds on and extends existing literature on cognitive adaptability in an entrepreneurial context by bringing together two streams of literature from psychology metacognition and personality traits. The implications of the process for dynamic, adaptable thinking are important in an emerging context such as that found in South Africa. The results of this study will inform the practice of policy makers who are trying to encourage start-up entrepreneurs to think about thinking in unpredictable entrepreneurial environments. In terms of methodology, the use of a sample of established entrepreneurs is desirable for this type of research since metacognition is better studied in entrepreneurs who are involved in a series of activities. Tyrimo tikslas – nustatyti darbuotojų asmenybės bruožų, jiems būdingo kognityvinio stiliaus ir psichologinio prisitaikymo prie pokyčių organizacijoje ekonominės krizės metu ryšius bei empiriškai patikrinti teorinį šių ryšių modelį. Tyrime dalyvavo 110 darbuotojų, 54 (40 moterų ir 14 vyrų) dirbantys akcinėje bendrovėje ir 56 (18 moterų ir 38 vyrai) einantys pareigas valstybės tarnyboje. Tyrimo metodikos: asmenybės bruožams nustatyti naudotas NEO PI-R; kognityvinis stilius nustatytas Kirton adaptyvumo – novatoriškumo inventoriumi; psichologiniam prisitaikymui prie pokyčių nustatyti naudotos dvi skalės: darbuotojų reagavimo į organizacinius pokyčius ir organizacinių pokyčių įveikimo. Šio tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad darbuotojų psichologinis prisitaikymas prie ekonominės krizės metu sukeltų pokyčių organizacijoje yra susijęs su darbuotojų sociodemografinėmis charakteristikomis (lytimi, amžiumi, išsilavinimu, užimamomis pareigomis). Taip pat nustatyta, kad darbuotojai, kuriems būdingi labiau išreikšti tokie asmenybės bruožai kaip ekstraversija ir sąžiningumas, pasižymi geresniu psichologiniu prisitaikymu prie pokyčių organizacijoje. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationships between employees’ personality traits, cognitive style and psychological adjustment to economic crisis caused organizational changes as well as to test empirically the theoretical model of these relationships. The subjects of the study were 110 employees, 54 (40 women and 14 men) working in stock company and 56 (18 women and 38 men) working in public service. Methods: personality traits were assessed by NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R); cognitive style was assessed using Kirton Adaption – Innovation Inventory; psychological adjustment to change was identified by to scales: Reaction of Employees to Organizational Change Scale and Coping with Organizational Change Scale. Results of the study showed that psychological adjustment to economic crisis caused changes in the organization are related to socio-demographic characteristics of employees (gender, age, education, position). It was also found that personality traits such as extroversion and conscientiousness are related to better psychological adjustment to changes and neuroticism is related to worse psychological adjustment to the economic crisis caused changes in the organization. ▼ Over the last several decades, a growing awareness of the benefits of regular screening for common health conditions, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, has paved the way for preventative screenings to become routine in medical settings. Given that cognitive impairment is frequently reported as the number one worry of older adults, home-based cognitive monitoring may be an innovative solution that allows middle aged and older adults to take an active role in monitoring an important aspect of their health. Although several home-based cognitive monitoring programs have been validated for use in clinical and home-based settings, the Cogstate Brief Battery (CBB) may be the leading candidate based on its brevity, reliability, and lack of practice effects. Although home-based monitoring via the CBB tends to be well-received by participants, it remains unclear how participant characteristics such as personality traits may affect their performance over time. In addition, the factors related to participants’ adherence and satisfaction with regular cognitive monitoring have yet to be examined. Addressing these unknowns are important, as they can help determine what to expect in terms of participant performance, adherence, and satisfaction, if home-based cognitive monitoring was implemented on a population-wide level in the future. This study examined how personality traits influenced cognitive performance over time on the CBB and explored participant adherence and satisfaction with regular cognitive monitoring over 60 months, using quantitative and qualitative data from a sample of cognitively healthy older adults recruited from communities in central Florida (N=158). Statistical analyses of the quantitative data using mixed effects models showed that personality traits were associated with performance on the CBB; in particular, higher conscientiousness was related to more accurate performance at baseline and improvements in speed over time. In addition, higher openness was associated with less accurate performance at baseline and slower, yet more accurate performance over time. In general, participants’ performance was relatively stable over time and fluctuations in performance occurred mostly in the first year of the study. Intraindividual variability also decreased over time, with significant decreases in variability occurring in participants who were higher in conscientiousness and openness. Mixed methods analyses of the data also suggested that participants liked their overall experience with the CBB, exhibited good study adherence over time, and were able to complete their monthly assessments with a high degree of independence. The themes that emerged from the qualitative analysis of participants’ study feedback suggest that most participants liked that CBB was easy, convenient to use, and provided them with a way to challenge themselves. ▼ The current research tests whether the inferences people make about likable and dislikable targets align with the predictions of balance theory. Specifically, I hypothesized that people exhibit a liking-similarity effect by perceiving greater similarity with a likable person than a dislikable person. In Studies 1 and 2, the liking-similarity effect was tested by manipulating the likable or dislikable impression of a target person and then assessing perceptions of similarity with the targets. In Study 1, participants rated themselves on various trait and attitude dimensions and made inferences about two targets – one likable and one dislikable – on those same dimensions.In Study 2, participants inferred the attitudes of a likable and dislikable target in regard to objects that participants had either positive or negative attitudes toward. Across both studies, people exhibited a liking-similarity effect by perceiving greater similarity with a likable than dislikable person.In Study 3, individual differences related to balance theory (i.e., preference for consistency and self-esteem) were tested as moderators of the liking-similarity effect. People with a strong, as compared to weak, preference for consistency were hypothesized to exhibit a greater liking-similarity effect because such inferences maximize cognitive balance. Similarly, people with high, as compared to low, self-esteem were hypothesized to exhibit a greater liking-similarity effect because perceiving similarity with likable targets maximizes balance for people who hold a similarly positive attitude about their own self-worth. Study 3 confirmed these hypotheses. Next, I manipulated participants’ preference for consistency (Study 4) and self-esteem (Study 5) to identify the potential causal relationship these variables may have with the liking-similarity effect. In Study 4,participants’ preference for consistency was manipulated by writing about the importance of consistency, inconsistency, or an unrelated value. In Study 5,participants’ self-esteem was manipulated via inclusion or exclusion during asocial game. Neither the preference for consistency nor self-esteem manipulation affected the liking-similarity effect. Participants in both studies, regardless of condition, continued to perceive greater similarity with likable, than dislikable, targets. Discussion focuses on the nature of the liking-similarity effect, its resistance to experimental manipulation, as well as possible implications for social cognition and behavior. ▼ In the finance area one of the issues that it has been attracting interest from several researchers is risk-taking behavior. Behavioral Finance has been seeking insert in decision making the variable Human Behavior. After all, what leads an individual to decide to buy or not certain product? This explanation comprises three assumptions, namely: personality traits, cognitive biases and sociodemographic characteristics. Accordingly, the defended thesis was that there is influence of personality traits, cognitive biases and sociodemographic characteristics in the decision maker's risk profile. The question answered was: What is the influence of personality traits, cognitive biases and sociodemographic characteristics in the decision maker's risk profile at purchasing time of a product in an auction? The choice of this type of business was due to the lack of studies in this area considering the variables mentioned being analyzed jointly. The main objective was to analyze the influence of these three variables on the risk profile of the decision maker at the purchasing time. Regarding the methodological aspects, it is characterized as an applied research, cross-sectional, using interviews and questionnaires as a way to data collection. Four semi-structured interviews were carried out in order to aid the design of questionnaire and were applied two hundred and eighty-two questionnaires with individuals who had taken part in any auction. In the qualitative stage of research one of those interviewed reported that ‘there are people who do not like to lose at anything. So I would say it goes far of personality’. It is perceived from this that personality traits and biases affect decision making by individuals. Quantitative data analysis beheld the description of the auction attendees’ profile, by using Descriptive Statistics, Factor Analysis and Linear Regression using SPSS version 20 software. Results indicated that most of the participants are male aged 26-55 and Monthly average income above R$ 2,500.00. The score data showed that amongst the five personality traits, only Neuroticism had more respondents in the low score, what is backed by the literature. The interviewed E1 mentioned that ‘the individual quickly learn operation of the auction’; thereby, whether the individual learns quickly, the trend is decrease of Risk aversion level, what can be ascertained with results achieved. Regarding cognitive biases, it was accept null hypothesis with respect to perception and it was rejected with respect to risk tolerance. Respecting personality traits, were accepted all null hypotheses as regards the perception and risk tolerance, except H2b (agreeableness), that it was rejected in relation to risk tolerance. Concerning the demographic data age and sex, it was rejected the null hypothesis as regards the perception and was accepted the null hypothesis with respect to risk tolerance. ▼ Population-level species’ cognitive traits have been well explored, as well as differences between species. However, the factors influencing variation in cognitive traits within species is less well known. I have used the swordtail fish species Xiphophorus multilineatus to explore factors potentially influencing variation in cognition, measured with two different classical conditioning tests. Males of this species have a polymorphism and exhibit two alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) – sneaker and courter tactics. Overall, females prefer to mate with the courter tactic males. Males of the two ARTs differ morphologically and behaviorally. The courter males are larger and will only courtship display for females, while the smaller sneaker males exhibit behavioral plasticity in their mating tactic, and will use a “sneak-chase” tactic to attempt to coerce mating or will courtship display for females if no larger males are in the vicinity. In the first chapter, I compared learning both between males and females and between the two male ARTs. I detected both sexual and tactical dimorphism in performance in a classical conditioning task, as well as the potential for sexual conflict to influence the evolution of cognitive traits in this species. As predicted, the sneaker males that are plastic in their use of mating behaviors performed better in the learning task than the courter males. Additionally, sneaker males performed better than females with a sneaker sire, but not females with a courter sire, which may indicate maternal effects of resource allocation that thereby affects cognitive traits in their offspring. In the second chapter, I capitalized on a known female mate preference in X. multilineatus to explore the effect of cognitive trait variation on female mate preference. I used a shape discrimination task to measure variation in cognitive ability, and a standard dichotomous preference test to measure strength of preference for the larger courter males as compared to smaller sneaker males. Females were able to learn to discriminate between the two-dimensional stimuli shapes, which is the first documentation of shape discrimination in a species of swordtail fish. I also detected a learning bias for circular shapes over squares, potentially due to sensory bias entrenching circular shapes as a more salient cue. I did not detect an effect of cognitive performance on variation in female strength of preference for courter males over sneaker males for females as virgins, experienced, or in considering the change in preference from virgins to experienced females. I suggest that future studies consider using a more difficult learning test, which would increase the variation across females, in addition to increasing the sample size, as the lack of significance appeared to be due weak statistical power. Further study of the influence of sexual conflict on learning as well as how learning influences female mate preference in this species will provide valuable insights into the costs and benefits of learning and of mating… Advisors/Committee Members: Morris, Molly (Advisor).

▼ Psychopathy is a developmental disorder characterized by deficits in emotional, interpersonal, and behavioural domains. Adult psychopaths commit a disproportionate amount of violent crime and are at a heightened risk for recidivism. Research suggests that children with psychopathic traits present with deficits similar to their adult counterparts on measures of passive avoidance learning and emotional processing. There is also evidence to suggest that these children engage in differential forms of aggression. In addition, research suggests that adult psychopathy develops early in life. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine cognitive, emotional and behavioural characteristics in children with psychopathic traits. The first objective of this dissertation was to examine cognitive and emotional processes in a sample of children with conduct problems (n = 56). The second objective of this dissertation was to examine the relationship between dimensions of psychopathic traits in children and two forms of aggression. The callous-unemotional traits, impulsivity, and narcissism dimensions of the Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD; Frick & Hare, 2001) were examined as predictors of both reactive and proactive aggression. Youth participants completed several behavoural measures and a self-report measure of aggression. Parents or caregivers also completed questionnaires assessing behaviour, personality, and psychopathic traits in their children. As hypothesized, children with high psychopathic traits displayed deficient passive avoidance. Further, children with high psychopathic also showed a bias away from threatening images. Children’s self-reported aggression was associated with callous-unemotional traits. These findings provide support for the developmental theory of psychopathy and help to explain the potential role of psychopathic traits in aggressive behaviours. Recommendations for future research and the clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

▼ Brand reputation has received the attention of many scholars and practitioners because it is central to the success of organisations of all kinds, and an intangible asset with no substitute. In the academic world, brand reputation has been demarcated by various scholars, depending on the disciplinary mind-set involved. It has been established that diverse stakeholder groups have different needs from a brand and their perceptions of brand reputation are thus varied. Acknowledging the needs of different stakeholders and the importance of the consumer stakeholder group allows for a more nuanced and systematic approach in conceptualising brand reputation. Although numerous studies have attempted to explain brand reputation, there is a paucity of studies that have actually conceptualised brand reputation as an attitudinal construct based on both cognitive (rational) and affective (emotional) components. Even fewer researchers have endeavoured to conceptualise brand reputation as an attitudinal construct in the consumer stakeholder group. The aim of this study was to explore female consumer perceptions of Nike’s brand reputation and conceptualise brand reputation as an attitudinal construct based on both cognitive and affective components. The study used qualitative research methods (focus groups and interviews) to collect data on Nike from a group of female consumers in order to identify perceptions and elements that contribute to conceptualising brand reputation on the basis of the components of attitudes. The key findings of this study highlighted the fact that brand reputation is a multidimensional construct and can be demarcated through various elements that contribute to the following themes: perception of product qualities and service, the perception of brand traits and the perception of brand strategy. These themes contribute to the conceptualisation of brand reputation as an attitudinal construct. Since brand reputation as an attitudinal construct has previously been conceptualised based on cognitive and affective components, this study confirmed the two components but a unique finding of this study was the identification of the behavioural component of attitudes. Hence the study findings not only make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge on perceptions of brand reputation in an elusive stakeholder group – female consumers, consumer-based reputation (CBR), and in defining brand reputation but also conceptualise brand reputation as an attitudinal construct based on previously identified cognitive and affective components as well as the newfound behavioural component of attitudes. ▼ The purpose of this research was to identify how and why some African American students included in gifted programs maintain academic and social success. Data from semi-structured interview responses, behavioral checklists, and personality traits rating scales were coded and themed as a means to tell Elijah's story. Currently a 20 year old African American college student, Elijah was initially overlooked by his elementary school teachers for a potential gifted placement and subsequently referred himself. Participants of this study include Elijah and eleven of his former teachers, administrators, coaches, and mentors. Emerging themes from the research as sources of qualities to use in identifying African American students for gifted referrals included social skills, self concept/internal motivation, work ethics, and academic proficiencies. Elijah's strongest area of observed behaviors that may be indicative of potential success in gifted classes was social skills followed by self concept/internal motivation. Academic proficiency was the area least noted as having a strong correlation to Elijah's success in gifted programs. The need for a prevailing support system was also acknowledged through the findings from this research. Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Social Cognitive Theory were used as the theoretical framework for this research. This research positions Elijah's story within a larger, structural context that acknowledges the interaction of internal and external factors that propel behaviors and actions. The complexity deepens as the research also addresses the systematic institutional policies, procedures and practices that covertly impede the recruitment and retention of African American students and gifted classrooms. The results of the study provide insight into a multi-faceted approach to identifying African American students for potential referrals to gifted programming and creating communities of accelerated opportunities.
