▼ Golden lion tamarins are highly social, group-living primates and are cooperative breeders. As such they are an ideal species in which to study social learning. Observations of six groups of wild golden lion tamarins were used to examine the development of social foraging and related behaviors in juveniles. Rates at which juveniles approached adults that were foraging for plant foods tended to decline with age (F=3.34, p=.0531), and the rates at which they begged (F=4.71, p=.0193), and foraged at the same site (i.e., co-foraged; F=3.44, p=.0495) decreased significantly. For prey foraging, rates at which adults vacated a site to allow a juvenile access (F=7.11, p=.0039), at which juveniles begged (F=5.41, p=.0119), and co-foraged (F=5.09, p=.0148) declined significantly with age. Interest in different types of prey foraging substrates and interest in co-foraging also were compared across juvenile age categories. By the time juveniles were in the oldest age category (about one year of age), co-foraging behaviors were still occurring at significantly higher rates than for adults. I investigated two hypotheses concerning the function of co-foraging: the nutrition hypothesis and the information hypothesis. The results most strongly supported the information hypothesis, which predicts that co-foraging provides young tamarins the opportunity to acquire knowledge about food and/or foraging. Behavioral experiments involving vocalization playbacks were carried out with one group of golden lion tamarins at Zoo Atlanta in order to investigate how a specific vocalization, the food-offering call, may influence the development of foraging behavior. The playback experiments contribute to the literature on interactions involving the food-offering call by testing the hypothesis that the call serves to focus young tamarins on productive foraging sites and thereby facilitates learning about feeding or foraging. Results of this study were inconclusive with respect to whether tamarins are preferentially attracted to foraging sites associated with the food-offering vocalization. However, analysis of tamarin foraging activity during experimentation allowed me to make recommendations for future exploration of tamarin response to the food-offering call. ▼ Infectious disease transmission requires that epidemiologically relevant contact occurs between infectious and susceptible individuals. Thus, for mathematical models to accurately predict disease emergence and dynamics they must incorporate the contact patterns responsible for transmission. In this context, this thesis investigates how the level of contact detail included in an infectious disease model influences its predictions. Three models are considered. The first investigates infections spreading through territorial populations, with potential canine rabies spread in Australian wild dogs a case study. Two factors governing wild dog contacts are considered: geographic distance and heterogeneous wild dog behaviour. Not including spatial constraints results in a model that overestimates the probability of an epidemic and that fails to generate the outcome 'rate of spread'. Conversely, not incorporating heterogeneous dog behaviour results in a model that underestimates the probability an epidemic will occur. The second model investigates tick-borne pathogen spread between ticks and vertebrate hosts. Key features of tick feeding behaviour include: tick aggregation on hosts, co-aggregation of larval and nymphal ticks on the same hosts, and co-feeding. Co-aggregation increases R0. Models failing to incorporate tick co-aggregation will therefore underestimate the likelihood of pathogen emergence, especially in geographic regions and seasons where larval burden is high and for pathogens mainly transmitted during co-feeding. The third model investigates the effect of clustering (triangle and square contact patterns) on the spread of infection through social networks. Clustering reduces R0 and the magnitude of the reduction increases with higher transmission probabilities. Models that fail to incorporate clustering will overestimate the likelihood of disease establishment, especially for highly transmissible diseases. In conclusion, the three disease models collectively reveal model predictions are improved and additional outcomes are generated by the inclusion of realistic host contact patterns. These findings reinforce the value of incorporating biologically-faithful contact patterns into infectious disease models.

▼ O crescimento da participação de biodiesel na matriz energética mundial aumentou o interesse no cultivo e processamento de oleaginosas, criando oportunidades para a produção de ruminantes pela possibilidade de utilização de co-produtos resultantes do processo de extração do óleo das sementes dessas oleaginosas e transformação do óleo em biodiesel. A glicerina é um triol viscoso, incolor, inodoro e higroscópio resultante, entre outros, do processo de transformação de um triglicerídeo em biodiesel, a partir de uma reação de transesterificação, na presença de um catalisador e de um álcool de cadeia curta (metanol ou etanol). Nesse processo, a glicerina denominada glicerina bruta, contém de 75 a 85% de glicerol, sendo o restante composto por água, óleo (7 a 13%), minerais oriundo dos catalisadores (2 a 3%) e álcool (<0,5%). Nesse sentido, avaliou-se o efeito da substituição do milho grão (MG) pela glicerina bruta (GB), nas proporções de 0%; 33,3%; 66,6% e 100%, na base da matéria seca (MS), sobre o consumo, a digestibilidade, o desempenho produtivo e o metabolismo de compostos nitrogenados (N) em vacas de leite. Foram utilizadas 12 vacas da raça Holandesa, distribuídas em três quadrados latinos 4 x 4, de acordo com o período de lactação. Os animais receberam ração na proporção de 50:50 em volumoso e concentrado, com base da MS. Utilizou-se silagem de milho como fonte exclusiva de volumoso. Realizou-se à análise de variância para comparação de médias e posteriormente, procedeu-se o teste de Williams, utilizando nível de 5% de probabilidade para o erro tipo I. O consumo de MS foi reduzido (P<0,05) a partir de 33,3% de substituição de MG por GB na dieta. Os consumos de MO, PB, FDN, FDNcp e FDAi seguiram a mesma tendência, reduzindo (P<0,05) a partir de 33,3% de substituição. O consumo de EE aumentou (P<0,05) a partir do nível de 66% de substituição, no entanto, não houve efeito significativo (P>0,05) para o consumo de CNF. Apesar da digestibilidade da MS, MO, PB, CNF e o teor de NDT (% da MS) terem aumentado (P<0,05) a partir de 66,6% de substituição do MG pela GB, os consumos de MS, MO digeridos e de NDT não foram influenciados significativamente (P>0,05) pela substituição nas dietas. A digestibilidade do EE aumentou significativamente (P<0,05) a partir do nível de 33,3% de substituição, enquanto que o consumo de componentes digeridos da PB reduziu (P<0,05) a partir do nível de 33,3% de substituição do MG pela GB da dieta. Mesmo não havendo redução do consumo de energia digestível, a inclusão de GB nas dietas acarretou redução (P<0,05) da síntese de N microbiano ruminal, a partir do nível de 33% de substituição. ▼ Cyclopentanone is a promising building block in the conversion of biomass to fuels. It can be readily obtained from furanics derived from biomass and can be converted to intermediate products in the molecular weight range compatible with fuels via C-C bond forming reactions. Among them, aldol condensation is a promising route. Conventional MgO catalysts are intrinsically active to catalyze this reaction, but they usually exhibit low surface areas and low stability in the presence of liquid water. The nitrate-citrate combustion method results in high-surface-area oxides with high condensation activity, but they are still susceptible to water attack. Here, hydrophobic MgO-based catalysts functionalized with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) are shown to exhibit remarkable stability in the liquid phase under conditions in which a conventional MgO deactivates in short time. A follow-up study investigates the effect of co-fed water on the MgO-catalyzed cyclopentanone self-aldol condensation. As more water is added, the initial rate on hydrophilic MgO drops rapidly due to site blockage. Meanwhile, the initial rate on hydrophobic MgO-OTS increases in water vapor before decreasing in excess liquid water. It is noteworthy that under dry conditions, kinetic studies indicate a shift in the rate-limiting step: from first-order α-H abstraction on MgO to second-order C-C coupling on MgO-OTS. A proposal is that the high OTS loading limits the interaction between cyclopentanone surface species and reduces the rate of C-C coupling. This step is, however, apparently favored by surface water clusters which bridge a liquid cyclopentanone to an Mg2+ acid site. Such assistance allows the electrophile to undergo a distant polarization which can facilitate the subsequent nucleophilic attack. Another important biomass upgrading process is the cyclopentanone-acetone cross-aldol condensation, since the primary products – especially cyclopentanone-activated compounds – can be hydrodeoxygenated into high octane-numbered hydrocarbons. Here, the reaction is catalyzed by high-surface-area MgO. Initial rates with various feed ratios, DFT calculations and adsorption measurements confirm both the preferential chemisorption and α-H abstraction of cyclopentanone with respect to acetone. For each ketone reactant, α-H abstraction is rate-limiting, but subsequent C-C coupling equilibria along with the feed composition control the product distribution. Gesellig lebende Tiere interagieren miteinander und können komplexe Beziehungen formen. Diese Interaktionen beeinflussen nicht nur die Art der Beziehungen, sondern können sich auch positiv auf das Überleben der Tiere auswirken, wenn ein Individuum von der gesteigerten Effizienz bei der Nahrungsaufnahme oder von erhöhtem Fortpflanzungserfolg profitiert. Regelmäßigkeiten oder Interaktionsmuster zwischen den Mitgliedern einer sozialen Gruppe darzustellen, ermöglicht die soziale Netzwerkanalyse. Soziale Netzwerke wurden bereits bei zahlreichen Tierarten beschrieben, zum Beispiel bei Fischen wie Guppies, Vögeln wie Dohlen oder bei Säugetieren wie Wildschweinen. Diese Studie hatte das Ziel die sozialen Interaktionsmuster einer Gruppe von 41 Kune Kune Schweinen (Sus scrofa domesticus), welche aus drei Sauen und ihren Würfen bestand, zu analysieren. Die soziale Netzwerkanalyse war fokussiert auf (I) Unterschiede zwischen den drei Familien zu finden, (II) den Effekt von Alter auf soziale Interaktionen zwischen den drei Altersklassen, den drei im Jahr 2013 geborenen Sauen und ihren in den Jahren 2014 und 2015 geborenen Würfen zu untersuchen und (III) Beziehungen zwischen den Schweinen zu evaluieren, um Dyaden mit besonders freundlichen und solche mit besonders feindlichen Beziehungen auszuwählen. Die Beziehungen, welche in semi-natürlichen Bedingungen in der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse gefunden wurden, wurden anschließend unter künstlichen Bedingungen (in co-feeding-Tests) getestet, um Hinweise zu finden ob soziale Netzwerkdaten welche durch regelmäßige Beobachtungen aufgenommen wurden, dieselbe Einsicht in soziale Gruppen liefern wie Verhaltensexperimente. Die soziale Netzwerkanalyse hat gezeigt, dass der Hauptunterschied im Bezug auf die Frequenz aber auch die Art der sozialen Interaktionen nicht zwischen den beiden Altersklassen der Würfe liegt sondern zwischen den Muttersauen und ihren Würfen. Der Vergleich zwischen den drei Familien hat gezeigt, dass Schweine aus der Z-Familie mehr sozionegatives Verhalten gegenüber anderen Schweinen zeigen als Schweine aus der R-Familie. Es gab deutliche Hinweise für Variationen in der Qualität der Beziehungen der Tiere untereinander, da sowohl freundschaftliche, feindliche als auch neutrale Beziehungen gefunden wurden. In den co-feeding-Tests hat sich gezeigt, dass es, im Gegensatz zu den natürlichen Bedingungen, keine signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen Dyaden mit einer affiliativen und Dyaden mit einer agonistischen Beziehung in Bezug auf Fressverhalten, Näheverhalten, soziopositives und sozionegatives Verhalten gibt. Interessanterweise, konnten die Verhaltensexperimente nicht die Beziehung der Tiere, welche in den Verhaltensbeobachtungen gefunden wurden, widerspiegeln. Erzwungener Wettbewerb um Futter scheint nur einen kleinen Teil der facettenreichen Beziehungen zwischen diesen Schweinen aufzudecken, hauptsächlich Dominanzbeziehungen.

▼ Growing interest in renewable energies due to shrinking reserves of fossil fuels and climate change concerns have led to extensive research towards gaseous and liquid fuels production from renewable energy resources such as biomass and wastes. Energy generation from municipal and industrial wastes such as wastewater sludge is also environmental friendly way to deal with large volume of waste disposal with the additional advantage of eliminating part of the indirect greenhouse gas emissions from energy crops-derived biofuels. In this thesis, a novel process for co-production of biogas and bio-crude oil from high-water-content wastewater sludge through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) treatments is developed. Hydrothermal liquefaction is a thermochemical process where raw sludge can be heat treated directly in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of water as the reaction medium mostly in subcritical or near critical conditions (T < 374 °C and P < 22.1 MPa). This eliminates the need to dewater/dry biomass which can be a major energy input for biofuel production via other processes such as pyrolysis or gasification. Since hydrothermal liquefaction is a promising technology for conversion of high-water-content biomass without the need of costly sludge dewatering, it could replace the conventional sludge treatment by making valuable energy products out of a waste material. Wastewater sludge was treated by two scenarios, operating at temperatures in a lower range (40-80 °C) and a higher range (200-350 °C), respectively. The low-temperature treatment was considered as sludge pre-treatment before anaerobic digestion, aiming to examine the possible relationship between increased solubilisation of the sludge as a result of the pre-treatment and its digestibility for biogas production. The high-temperature treatment scenario was performed to produce value-added products such as bio-crude oil from co-processing of wastewater sludge (more than 90% water content) with another type of lignocellulosic biomass to adjust substrate concentration to a higher level with better economics of the process, and to increase the bio-oil yield and quality. The main by-product from the high-temperature process (water-soluble product) was used as a potential feedstock for biogas production through anaerobic digestion.
