The source of nonlinearities in the dynamic response from electronic equipment was investigated. One possible source identified was the existence of clearances at the constraints of a printed circuit board, which were illustrated on a product. The nature of the clearances was defined theoretically through the use of nonlinear elastic elements. Theoretical models were created based on the results from experimentation. Experimental and theoretical results were compared and it was determined that the theory correctly described the behavior of the product, and therefore clearances were dictating the response. The effects of changing the clearance on the dynamic response were examined by further experimentation. The relative displacement response between the constraint and printed circuit board showed several different impact cases resulted based on the constraint clearance. Large differences in accelerations measured from the printed circuit board showed that the product was highly sensitive to minor changes of the clearance.
