▼ This dissertation explores the entanglement of temporality, realism, and representation in the making and viewing of Dutch art. I explore these issues through paintings, prints, and drawings by Dutch artists of Amsterdam made in the second half of the seventeenth century. Printed maps, paintings, drawings, and engravings of the destruction and ruination, both historical and imagined, of well-known Amsterdam structures, and images that have been understood to be straight-forward portraits of Amsterdam buildings and spaces are the main subjects of this study. This is not, however, a dissertation about architecture, or even, directly, about the representation of real architecture. Instead, I consider what happens in the intervals between representation and represented, the spaces where imagination transforms the experienced into the imaged. That is, this study begins with the assumption that what is represented in the works of art under consideration is not something that resides in the physical world, but rather the artist's imagining of what could, or should, or might exist in its place. This dissertation therefore questions the very structure of Dutch realism, arguing that the realism effect was actually the location of the severing of world from image. I argue that Amsterdam cityscapes subvert their own apparent status as realistic representations of contemporary Amsterdam. Though these images have always been treated as mimetic, they actively resist recording the present city, sometimes including structures that have yet to be built, in other instances destroying edifices that were already extant. These images, by Rembrandt, Ruisdael and Jan van der Heyden, among others, visually remake the city in a variety of ways: as it was meant to appear in the future; as a nostalgic and idealized version of its lost, past self; as a decayed ambivalent version that is neither clearly past nor clearly future. Denying the present, seventeenth-century images of Amsterdam convey unease about contemporary urban experience and probe the uncomfortable limits of representation itself. These creative reconstructions of Amsterdam were a form of resistance to the modernizing environment of the city, for they catered to both a false nostalgia for a fictive ancient past, and a deep ambivalence about the modernization and monumentalization of the urban fabric. I argue that Dutch art, which appears to insistently transcribe contemporary experience, is also paradoxically invested in the erasure of the present and the construction of alternate realities. The realist mode favored by many Dutch artists was far more concerned with the construction of new paradigms for society than with the representation of contemporary life.

Flykt i hög hastighet genom stadens raviner och klipplandskap, i en hängande berg-och-dalbanevagn med fötterna dinglande över stadslivet påverkas stadsuppfattningen av det visuella flödet. Hela tiden växlande g-krafter, ett lätt sommarregn och vinden i håret gör stadsupplevelsen fysisk på riktigt. Stockholms landmärken är välbekanta, där de glider i och ur synfältet, men ändå inte. Folk på marken tittar på dig, skrattar. Där! Visst var det din gamla fysiklärare i gathörnet? Borta! Projektet beskriver en berg-och-dalbana i Stockholms City. Banan förbinder Sergels Torg med Stureplan via loopar och svängar över tak, mellan hus, i gränder, över Kungsgatan och stannar till på ett par andra platser. Syftet är flerfaldigt; erbjuda en för storstäder unik typ av sightseeing, skapa möjlighet till den hisnande omedelbara glädjen som bara kan uppstå när kroppen utsätts för kontrollerade g-krafter, vara ett dekorativt slingrande fackverk med organiska stolpar i en hård stadsmiljö och frigöra de krafter som kan uppstå när människan möter staden på ett oväntat sätt. Som en del av projektet har ett flertal digitala verktyg utvecklats för att formge, analysera och simulera en rolig och njutbar berg-och-dalbanefärd. För generering av strukturens form, utifrån åkturens och stadens förutsättningar. För visualiseringar med planer, sektioner, animationer, bl.a. annat via kopplingar till karttjänster på internet.

Flying along the city canyons at high velocity, sitting in an inverted coaster car with feet dangling above the street life, the optical flow alters your visual perception of the city. Constantly changing g-forces, a light rain and the wind in your hair makes the city experience physical. The landmarks of Stockholm are recognized as they enter and exit your field of view, but they feel different. People look at you, laughing. There! Wasn’t that your old physics teacher at the street corner? Gone! The project describes a roller coaster in the CBD of Stockholm, Sweden. The circuit connects Sergels Torg with Stureplan, going through loops and turns, over roofs, between facades, into alleys, along Kungsgatan, making stops at a couple of other places. The purpose is manifold; to provide a unique type of city sightseeing, create an opportunity to experience the specific and immediate happiness that only an abundance of controlled g-forces can give you, to be a decorative, clinging and surprising space truss with organic steel pylons in an otherwise hard city environment, and to release the powers that can ignite, when people get to meet the city in unexpected ways. Part of the project has been the development of a digital toolset to design, analyse and simulate a fun and pleasant roller coaster ride, to generate the geometry of the space truss and pylons, based on the needs of the ride and the city, and to generate plan drawings, sections, animations and connections to geographic data services on the internet.

Esta investigação discorre sobre as transformações da paisagem que envolve o percurso contemporâneo formado pelas ruas Duque de Caxias e Professor Annes Dias no bairro Centro Histórico em Porto Alegre. O local ocupado sobre a ponta da ‘península’ deu origem a importantes ruas da cidade de Porto Alegre, entre elas a do Hospital (atual rua Professor Annes Dias) e a da Igreja (atual rua Duque de Caxias). Verificou-se na paisagem urbana contemporânea uma considerável variação em suas morfologias. A partir disso, o estudo demonstra como ocorre o diálogo entre edificações resultantes dos diferentes planos reguladores urbanos de Porto Alegre, com a paisagem urbana preexistente à sua aplicação. Destaca-se uma avaliação sobre os regimes urbanos e as edificações de interesse cultural, ou seja, edificações inventariadas e tombadas do trajeto. A análise da paisagem contemporânea foi realizada por meio da investigação de traços das arquiteturas presentes ao longo do percurso, da utilização ou não desses traços como referência às transformações que ocorreram e, também, da investigação de conjuntos edificados em diferentes trechos do percurso.

This research deals with the transformations of the landscape that surrounds the contemporary route formed by the streets Duque de Caxias and Professor Annes Dias in the Historic Downtown neighborhood of Porto Alegre. The place occupied on the tip of the peninsula, gave rise to important streets of Porto Alegre city, among them the street of the Hospital (current street Professor Annes Dias) and the street of the Church (current street Duque de Caxias). There has been considerable variation in the morphology of the contemporary urban landscape. From this, the study shows itself as an organization that brings together the different urban regulatory plants of Porto Alegre, with an urban landscape pre-existent to its application. An evaluation of the urban systems and buildings of cultural interest, that is, inventories buildings and toppled buildings. The analysis of the contemporary landscape was carried out by means of the investigation of traces of the architectures present along the route, of the use or not of these traces as a reference to the transformations that occurred and of the investigation of sets constructed in different stretches of the route.

O presente trabalho centra-se na problemática de melhorar a cidade existente e de que modo a arquitetura pode articular e contribuir para noções como cidade, sociedade, espaço público e habitação. A procura de melhor cidade pode ser realizada com propostas que demonstram novas lógicas ou pontos de interesse na cidade, tomando assim como zona de estudo a Freguesia das Avenidas Novas em Lisboa. O trabalho enquadra-se na sequência da proposta da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian que tem por objetivo melhorar a Freguesia a que pertence, no âmbito do projeto “O Nosso Km2”. Assim o entendimento e conhecimento de uma cidade existente consolidada é fundamental para dar resposta a alguns dos seus problemas, criando novas vivências através de percursos/rampas, ligações, conexões. Contudo a análise da malha urbana desta freguesia de Lisboa tem um aspeto marcante nas fases do seu crescimento ao longo dos tempos: a existência de uma barreira física ferroviária. Ela corresponderá ao ponto fulcral da intervenção, propondo-se pontes pedonais e cicláveis que promovam a fusão cultural e socioeconómica do território, enquanto objetivo real e concreto. Olhando ao envelhecimento populacional e à mobilidade na cidade como sendo uma realidade à qual não podemos fugir, será de extrema necessidade darmos um contributo agradável com novas lógicas do uso dos espaços na cidade, em função da realidade dos nossos tempos. Devido à existência de vários polos universitários e à problemática do idoso solitário, a habitação intergeracional será o tema que se pretende aprofundar, tentando criar espaços que possam ser usufruídos por todos; e para que tal suceda, serão abordadas todas as escalas do projeto numa linha conceptual que vai desde o urbano ao edifício. A proposta pretende criar locais de transparência e fluidez de passagem, com diversas zonas onde o espaço social vive e penetra, convivendo com o privado e assim criar novas perceções sensíveis na paisagem urbana.

This paper focuses on the issue of improving the existing city and how architecture can articulate and contribute to notions such as city, society, public space and housing. The demand for better city can be performed with proposals that demonstrate new logic or points of interest in the city, taking as study area the Town of New Avenues in Lisbon. The work is part of following the proposal of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which aims to improve the parish to which it belongs under the project "Our Km2." So the understanding and knowledge of a consolidated existing city is crucial to address some of their issues, creating new experiences through routes / ramps, connections, connections. However the analysis of the urban fabric of this parish of Lisbon has a striking appearance in the stages of their growth over time: the existence of a physical barrier rail. It will correspond to the focus of intervention, proposing pedestrian and bike bridges that promote cultural and socio-economic merger of the territory, while real objective and concrete. ▼ This dissertation argues that compositional shifts that appear in Dutch cityscape paintingsdepicting Haarlem and Amsterdam between 1650 and 1672 indicate cultural fluctuations thatimpacted expressions of urban citizenship. In the decades following the Protestant Reformationand the eighty-year revolt against Spain, Dutch academics and political reformers proposed arelationship between city and inhabitant structured around rationality, voluntary collectivism,and a desire for environmental and existential certainty. Chapter 1 evaluates texts that addressthe destabilizing effects of the war with Spain and the necessity to strengthen Dutch culture in itsaftermath. While written at different times between the start of the war in 1568 and theconclusion of the Stadholderless period in 1672, each of these texts written by various culturalreformers and critics, from the philologist Justus Lipsius, to the historian Caspar Barlaeus, andthe economist Pieter de la Court, propose a subjective engagement with Dutch cities and theirsystems of local government. Chapter 2 maps this trend toward subjective engagements withcultural and political institutions onto visual depictions of the Dutch cities of Haarlem andAmsterdam. Prints and then paintings of cities replace distanced compositional views with moresubjective views, where the features of the city are apprehended from fixed and specificlocations, emphasizing each city’s distinctive cultural character. Chapter 3 looks morespecifically at cityscape paintings produced between 1650 and 1672 to argue that paintersproduced images responsive to urban residents’ own developing sense of subjective intimacywith Amsterdam and Haarlem. These images provided a visual vocabulary to the desire forneostoic order and social collectivism expressed by Lipsius, Barlaeus, and the engineer SimonStevin. Chapter 4 considers how these paintings functioned as symbolic objects, arguing thatthey were physical expressions of urban citizenship and bourgeois social inclusion for theresident-collectors who bought and displayed cityscapes in their homes. The concluding chapterproposes additional topics of consideration, such as a comparison between Dutch and Englishpictorial expressions of urban citizenship and the extent to which these expressions wereimpacted by the political instability experienced by both cultures during the seventeenth century.

L’époque hellénistique est le moment où les villes d’Ionie et de Carie changent peu à peu d’aspect. Dans chaque ville ou presque, quantité de monuments publics nouveaux façonnent progressivement un paysage urbain inédit qui se présente comme un miroir de la cité qui l’a créé. C’est cette transformation sans précédent des centres urbains durant l’époque hellénistique que cette thèse se propose d’étudier, en portant attention aux villes d’Ionie et de Carie dans toute leur diversité. Elle cherche à dégager le sens des changements dans deux régions à l’hellénisation ancienne et fortement urbanisées, caractérisées par des interactions entre cités et rois hellénistiques. Cette étude propose des pistes pour mieux comprendre les sociétés civiques au travers d’un lieu de vie : la ville. L’approche privilégie ce que la ville a de plus remarquable, ses édifices publics. Dans une première partie consacrée aux fortifications urbaines, aux lieux qui abritent les activités politiques, et aux espaces de la vie culturelle au sens large, les monuments publics sont évoqués en tant qu’espaces de la vie civique, et l’on s’interroge sur les raisons de la construction de tant de bâtiments nouveaux. Dans un second temps, une étude plus transversale de l’espace urbain décrit comment se met en place à cette époque un cadre de vie véritablement urbain, avec un paysage, des aménagements et une organisation de l’espace bien spécifique. La troisième partie consacrée aux thématiques économiques montre comment la prospérité des cités se traduit dans la pierre : la construction de bâtiments pour abriter les activités économiques témoigne autant du souci des cités de développer et d’encadrer ces activités que de la richesse de la vie économique des poleis. Ce dynamisme contribue aussi à expliquer une activité de construction soutenue, rendue possible par l’existence de ressources abondantes et variées à la disposition des cités. La réflexion porte pour finir sur la dimension politique et sociale des transformations de l’espace urbain. Cette dernière partie se place dans une perspective historique plus large, celle de l’évolution de la cité hellénistique.

The Hellenistic period is the time when the aspect of the cities of Ionia and Caria is changing gradually. In almost each city, an amount of new public buildings progressively shaping a new urban landscape that looks like a mirror of the city that created it. It is this unprecedented transformation of urban centers during the Hellenistic period that this thesis studies, with attention to the cities of Ionia and Caria in all their diversity. Interested in the relations between cities, the citizen and the arts, this project turns to the work of the French multi-media urban artist JR. The research is guided by the hypothesis that his production can be inserted in the so-called rebel culture, emphasizing the utopian content in its production, having the assumption to use art as an instrument of intervention and social revolution. The corpus of the research comprises the projects of JR that, since 2005, began to have international scope, such as Women are Heroes (2008 - 2010), Rio de Janeiro and Wrinkles of the City (2008-), Cuba . The artist transits among photography, video, dance, scenography, music and, in the limit, digital media, having a personal website as the final support of his interventions. Thus, in consonance with the extremely hybrid nature of the object and the research hypothesis, the communicational ambience and the intersemiotic relations among the mediatic discourses, involved in creative processes, are equally considered. The state of the art involves studies focused on the historical vanguards, such as Le Siècle Rebelle - Dictionaire de la Contestation au XX Siècle de Emmanuel de Waresquiel. The main theoretical references refer to the theories of the image, as formulated by Rancière in O Destino das Imagens and, alternatively, the Hubermasian theory, with emphasis on the reading model proposed in Diante da Imagem. Methodologically, the research is bibliographical and documentary. We believe that its relevance lies in unveiling an internationally renowned artist, still unkown among us and – above all - pointing out an interesting form of convergence between art and social communication

This study was conduct as a candidate thesis at Jönköping’s School of Engineering. The purpose of the study was to examine how the light zone of façade lighting on a historical building is perceived in correlation to the cityscape. Historical buildings are an important part of the cityscape and connect the identity of the city, the cultural heritage, and the history of the building to the inhabitants. However, currently there is little published research within the area perception of façade lighting. The study is conducted as three case studies on the buildings: Rådhuset (the townhall) in Jönköping, Grand Hotel in Stockholm, and the Stadshuset (City hall) in Gothenburg. The case studies used qualitative observational methods (Lynch /Branzell, PERCIFAL & FOG). To be able to compare the different objects a new method was developed by the authors, named “FOG”. FOG stands for the English word fog. The new method is based on methods established by Lynch, Branzell, Cullen, and the optical scale. Our results indicate that the new method FOG is suitable to use when planning for façade lighting on existing facades, historical or not. FOG also have the potential to be used on other objects than facades when evaluating or working with the cityscape. Historical buildings façade suitability for façade lighting is based on its ornamentation and correlation with the urban space. Lighting on historical building façades increases the accessibility of the area and the perception of exclusiveness of the area.

Studien genomfördes som ett examensarbete vid Jönköpings Tekniska högskola. Syftet med studien är att undersöka hur ljusrum upplevs i samband med historiska fasader och stadsrummet. Historiska byggnader är en viktig del av stadsrummet samt stadens identitet, kulturarv och historia. I dagsläget finns nästintill ingen tidigare forskning publicerad på upplevelsen av fasadbelysning. Studien genomfördes som tre fallstudier på platserna: rådhuset i Jönköping, Grand hotell i Stockholm och stadshuset i Göteborg med kvalitativa observationsmodeller (Lynch / Branzell, PERCIFAL & FOG). För att kunna jämföra de olika objekten har författarna tagit fram en egen metod kallad ”FOG”. FOG kommer från det engelska ordet dimma. FOG grundar sig i metoderna Lynch, Branzell, Cullen och optisk skala. Studien visar att FOG kan användas vid planering och som observations metod av fasadbelysning av en befintlig byggnad. FOG har även potential att kunna användas på andra objekt och för att stödja arbete med stadsgestaltning. En historisk fasads lämplighet för belysning påverkas av fasadens ornamentering och relation till stadsrummet. Resultaten från studien visar att belysning på historiska fasader ökar tillgängligheten av platsen, samt ökar upplevelsen av exklusivitet.

▼ In many Latin American cities, like Medellín, the food distribution system has an apparent irrational structure. The case is that food is distributed first to the city centre and from there redistributed towards the periphery with a concentrically raising price. This becomes most clear if we look at the informally built settlements that are mostly located in the outskirts of the city adjacent to surrounding rural area. These settlements mainly started to grow from the 1950s on. Until the 1970s the city of Medellín prospered economically. This prosperity leaded to an immense growth of the city, as in most of the other Latin American cities. It was round this time that the expansion limits of the city were reached as well. Next to the growth of industrial centers, proliferation of squatter settlements took place. This resulted in an increasing differentiation between the formally and informallu built parts of the city. The informally built neighbourhoods on the slopes around the city covers the whole ring surrounding the metropolitan area in all possible directions. A clear example of this differentiation is the food distribution system that was not equally developed throughout the city. Ever since the introduction of the Mayorista (central wholesale market) in 1971 no public markets were added to the network. Instead private developments took over, from the 90s on mainly supermarkets, and big vacuums emerged in the supply network. This imbalance causes increasing food prices for the people in lower social classes (mostly living in informally developed areas in the periphery). Next to that it creates an undesirable dependence on big scale centralized systems and organizational structures. There is a big contrast between the systematics of the informally built neighbourhoods and the (food) logistics system. The informal as a counter to the formal system is developed in a decentral and adhoc manner. The informal systematics work just like the slums themselves namely from the bottom-up. This decentral character of the informally built structures is not reflected upon in the (spatial) structure of the food distribution network in Medellín (and other Latin American metropolitan areas). The hypothesis is that this issue becomes most clear there where we can see exchange between the formal and informal. For this reason this will be the area of focus. In order to develop strategies that are complimentary to the projects that are done in the past years in Medellín the research and project that will follow from this is focused on food. The issue of food (in)security is not widely covered within the upgrading projects as they are proposed up till now. By addressing the theme of food we start at the foundation of the Maslow pyramid. We could say that without proper nutrition one is not able to develop further as a person. It makes possible that people will go to libraries, study and go to school. Yanaka ist ein auf einem Hügel gelegenes Viertel in Tokyo, in dem historische Strukturen und Altbausubstanz das Stadtbild besonders stark prägen. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem partizipativen Stadtbildschutz in Yanaka unter dem Blickwinkel des explorativen Ansatzes der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT). Es wird untersucht, wie in dem Akteur-Netzwerk historische Ensembles und Strukturen auch in einer modernen Megametropole wie Tokyo geschützt werden können. Als Herausforderungen für den Stadtbildschutz gelten unter anderem der Modernisierungsdruck, hohe Immobilienpreise und strenge Katastrophenschutzmaßnahmen. Mithilfe von Interviews, die während eines Forschungsaufenthaltes 2017 geführt wurden, werden die Verknüpfungen zwischen den einzelnen Aktanten analysiert. Die Initiative zur Stadtbilderhaltung geht in Yanaka vorrangig von der Zivilgesellschaft aus. Auf der Ebene von zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen sticht die NPO Taitō Rekishi Toshi Kenkyū Kai hervor, welche die Koordination zwischen einzelnen Aktanten im Netzwerk vornimmt. Aus den Untersuchungen geht auch hervor, dass trotz steigendem Organisationsgrad der Zivilbevölkerung Erhaltungsinitiativen besonders mit einzelnen engagierten Aktivistinnen und Aktivisten assoziiert werden. Die zivilgesellschaftlichen Aktanten haben bisher in Yanaka erfolgreich Einzelobjekte vor dem Verfall oder Abriss geschützt. Ihnen sind hingegen Grenzen gesetzt, wenn es darum geht, ganze Ensembles zu schützen. Insgesamt zeichnet sich im Netzwerk eine Zweiteilung zwischen öffentlichen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Aktanten ab. Letztere fordern von den Behörden mehr Maßnahmen zum Schutz des Stadtbildes und zur Förderung der eigenen Schutzinitiativen. Die Lokalregierung zeigte bisher Zurückhaltung darin, durch rechtliche und finanzielle Maßnahmen zur Erhaltung des historischen Stadtbildes von Yanaka beizutragen. Jüngste Entwicklungen geben jedoch Aussicht auf eine bessere rechtliche Stellung des Stadtbildschutzes in Yanaka.

Yanaka is a district on a hill in Tokyo, the urban landscape of which is particularly marked by an abundance of historic structures and buildings. The present paper addresses the participatory conservation of the urban landscape in Yanaka, particularly through the lens of the explorative actor-network theory (ANT). It examines how historic ensembles and structures can be protected even in a modern mega-metropolis such as Tokyo. The challenges relating to the conservation of urban landscape include the high pressure of modernisation, high real estate prices and strict disaster control measures, among others. Based on interviews that were carried out during a research visit in 2017, links between different actants are analysed. It is mostly civil society that initiates steps to protect the urban landscape in Yanaka. One of the most salient civil society organizations is the NPO Taitō Rekishi Toshi Kenkyū Kai which coordinates different actants within the network.
