▼ This paper is written to show that poetry is not the somewhat sentimental, useless, effeminate, out-of- date thing it is often considered to be, bat a form of literature which gives great help to the Church in broadening, guiding, ennobling the life of man as he struggles through this land of darkness and exile to his true home in heaven.|I am not discussing the poetic values of the Catholic Faith, although that would make a splendid subject for a paper. The vision of the Church, the liturgy of the Church, the far-reaching truths which are the teachings of the Church, are all profoundly poetic. Our Faith, indeed, is without doubt poetry’s strongest bulwark. The old mythologies, which inspired much of the pre-Christian poetry, have died. It is true that Christianity helped to kill them; but even if Christianity had not buried them, they would have sunk into the grave of their own weight long since. They cannot be permanently resurrected again in our present civilization.|Without faith in an after-life of reward and punishment, without belief in the free-will of man and his importance and dignity because of his immortal soul, man and his life ere not worthy subjects for poetry. Strip him of the glories which distinguish him from the animal, and man is no better than the brute. One cannot write great poetry about animals. Picture the tragedies of Sophocles or of Shakespeare written of beings without souls. It is because the will is free, it is because the effects of the choice between moral good and evil last eternally, that the struggle of the drama is so vital.|One could, therefore, write much on the subject of the poetic values of the Catholic Faith. But the following paper is taking the complementary view. That is, it treats of the Catholic values of poetic writings. Catholicism has been an inspiration to poets; poets have been a help to Catholicism. Both of these truths have remained rather obscure in the minds of many. I shall make an effort to remove some of the veil shrouding the second. I shall show especially how poetry helps the Church by siding the intellect to see the great Catholic truths more vividly and by training the emotions to seek their satisfaction in those things and ways which these truths reveal as worthy and noble. ▼ This dissertation focuses on the emergence of a public Catholic culture in the first years of the early American republic and examines aspects of Catholic-Protestant relations during the last three decades of the eighteenth century. Revising existing interpretations, it argues that both clerical and lay Catholics, chief among them the printer Mathew Carey, carefully negotiated the first Catholic presence in the public sphere through the medium of print. This early Catholic culture appropriated "enlightened" rhetoric and modes of expression in order to critique the anti-Catholic legacy of the Colonial period that viewed Catholicism as a remnant of the "Dark Ages" and incompatible with republicanism. I argue that this pervasive historical view of Catholicism as anti-progressive is key to understanding the persistence of anti-Catholicism in the history-conscious early republic. Catholics of this era strove to define the public face of the Church in America as sympathetic to the dominant values of the founding generation, and to dispute Whig historical views of Catholicism's role in history, especially the history of England and then Britain. In this era, I argue, anti-Catholicism can be viewed as primarily ideological in nature.; Mathew Carey's brand of republican Catholicism brought from Ireland in the 1780s provided an existing model for this experiment, and like-minded American-born Catholics such as first bishop John Carroll also attempted to carefully control perceptions of the new church as "foreign." This was achieved through printed statements addressed to American Catholics, to President Washington, in responses to renegade or outspoken Catholic clergy, through Catholic devotional and instructional publications, the printing and marketing of the first Douai Bible in America, critiques of Whig history, and in Carey's participation in an extended newspaper controversy sparked by a derogatory reference to Catholic doctrine made by a politician.; By the time of Carey's death in 1839, this experiment in enlightened, republican Catholicism ended, as the Church, facing renewed anti-Catholicism that arose in reaction to massive ethnic Catholic immigration, ghettoized itself into an enclosed sub-culture increasingly viewed as dominated by "foreign" clerical leadership. ▼ The Catholic experience in the Texas-US borderlands represents a void within the humanities. The attitudes that surround the topic of religion in socio-historical and literary studies have limited the scope of works. Two of the most problematic biases are the pro and anti-Catholic discourses that have been intertwined with national political agendas in both countries. They have created important obstacles that complicate the study and understanding of the identities that have arisen since the conquest. In the border, a significant percent of Mexican families maintain strong links to Catholic practices and beliefs despite living under the pressures of Americanization and secularization that are deeply rooted in the anti-clerical discourse. On the other hand, pro-Catholic approaches often lose sight of the realities found in the margins of society, as they can be over-reactionary to perceived attacks. Taking this counterpoint in consideration, this dissertation studies the multiple faces of Catholicism portrayed in the contemporary narratives of Texas: La Gran Ladronería en el Lejano Norte 2013 of Carmen Boullosa and in Generaciones y Semblanzas 1977, Claros Varones de Belken 1986 and Becky and her Friends 1990, all three novels of Rolando Hinojosa’s Klail City Death Trip Series. This analysis is situated within pro and anti-Catholic discourses, as well as with the critical works on cultural change of anthropologists such as Fernando Ortiz, Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán, Clifford Geertz, Elizabeth Fernea, and Dan Rose. Some of the historians considered with regards to the subject of Mexican-American culture and religious change are Albert Camarillo, Robert Wright O.M.I, Carlos E. Castañeda, Timothy Matovina, and Robert Treviño. The works of these critics, in conjunction with the study of the borderland titles, allow for the possibility of re-tracing the Mexican-American Catholic experience in the Rio Grande Valley starting from the years that immediately followed the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848. Ultimately, this dissertation allows for a better understanding of the religion shared by many generations of Mexican Americans and proves that Boullosa and Hinojosa’s works are crucial in understanding the processes responsible for the generational shifts and reactions that many historiographers have noted in the study of the borderlands. ▼ This dissertation argues that Catholic literature, far from being an escape from the historical to the spiritual, revises major literary forms as negotiates American culture and doctrinal orthodoxy to create an American Catholic community. My research in Catholic print culture suggests, on the contrary, that religious writers responded to complex, interwoven political and theological concerns of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. I argue, then, that the development of American Catholic fiction participates in the creation a middle-class American Catholic culture. While anti-Catholicism in the nineteenth century imagined Catholicism as antithetical to American citizenship, Catholic writers at the turn of the twentieth century tried to overcome divided loyalties and create a Catholicism that both accounted for and engaged with American culture. Although Catholic literary critics deemed traditional genres of American fiction anathema to Catholic theology and culture, Catholic writers adapted formal developments, from the sentimental novel of the nineteenth century to the popular modernism of the twentieth century, to confront an American social world that sought to exclude them and to reconsider official Church doctrine. ???Lines of Spiritual Motion??? therefore argues that American Catholic fiction is not only a religious discourse, but also a rich historical discourse. To that end, I focus on a diverse group of American Catholic writers???Mary Anne Sadlier, Orestes Brownson, Kathleen Norris, Dorothy Day, Hilary Leighton Barth, Harry Sylvester, and Flannery O???Connor???who provided a fertile ground for American Catholics to transition from a conflicted relation to dominant American culture to fuller participation in it, marked by the move from urban Catholic ghettoes at the turn of the century to American suburbs in the post-war era. ??? ▼ (Conclusion)|These are eleven letters of Saint Cyprian which are consolatory. It has been shown that the nature of the consolation is varied and that it is based upon the faith and trust o£ his readers. He appeals to their faith that God has kept His promises in the past and that He is fully able and willing to keep all promises not yet fulfilled. By stressing this, Cyprian assures his troubled reader that the present distresses will come to an end and that there will be better times ahead. He is also able, by relying on the authority of Scripture, to assure the disconsolate of an eternal reward for patient endurance of trials. That reward is eternal life in heaven.|Cyprian employs a number of methods to accomplish his purpose of consolation. For the most part he uses direct references to Scripture. He is also an artful user of many indirect references to Scripture. It has also been shown that Cyprian uses a fine psychological approach, an appeal to the emotions. with good effect.|The examples which have been quoted have also shown that Cyprian had mastered the art of writing. His language is simple and direct. He employs many figures, but uses only such as are readily understandable.|Finally, this work has shown Cyprian to have been a real comforter especially because he had a real sympathy and love toward those to whom he wrote. Among all the other skills observed in this work, •none stands out quite so well as his ability to place himself into the other person's situation and then to speak from his heart to the heart of his reader, making his thought match the reader's. This is not merely an artistic tour de force, a kind of Ethopoiia as in the case of such a writer as Lysias, but is a true example of Christ-like love uniting with the object of its solicitude. In Cyprian we have not only one who is a fine Christian, sincere believer: but also one who uses his Christian beliefs for the benefit of the downtrodden and subjugated of his time. ▼ In this treatise we shall endeavor to set forth the contribution made by Saint Paulinus of Nola to early Christian poetry. The principal sources at our disposal for a literary study of this author’s works are as follows: the "Corpus Vienna," Volume XXX; Migne, Volume LXI. Although the first of these sources is a later edition, nevertheless the differences existing in the two texts are negligible. Migne's edition contains most of the matter of former editions. In it matters of reference are inaccurate in some passages; likewise the index lacks the quality of exactness. However, as a whole, the volume presents a body of literature comprising all the extant prose and poetry composed by Paulinus. |A secondary purpose of this dissertation is to portray the exemplary character of Saint Paulinus, bishop of Nola, and that of Saint Felix, the subject of the "Natalicia." The standard source-material which we have employed to sketch the life of Paulinus is Buse's "Paulin und seine Zeit," Volumes I and II. This author of the last century has assembled with painstaking care, great moderation, and critical judgment all that can possibly be known concerning Paulinus. As regards the character study of Saint Felix, we intend to depict this martyr and confessor through the analysis of the "Natalicia." They show forth at considerable length the admirable virtues, activities, and also the martyrdom of this saint. |The "Natalicia" are also the subject of our choice in the field of Paulinus' poetry for this reason: they form a well-rounded unit of his most exquisite poems. It is not our intention to exhaust the possibilities in the literary analysis which we are undertaking. Rather, we wish to present a general view of the whole, together with specific instances to illustrate some of the outstanding characteristics contained in the verses. |By perusing the five thousand lines of the "Natalicia," which comprise approximately half of Paulinus' poetry, we hope to be enabled to sketch adequately the wealth and depth of his 'works. It is also our plan to make better known this poet, comparable to the great Prudentius, inasmuch as his life and works are insufficiently read, even among the group of scholars engrossed in the realm of literature.
