▼ Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have existed as a disruptive educational phenomenon for nine years. Grounded in the roots of distance education, open education, Open Educational Resources, and OpenCourseWare, MOOCs have now survived various critics and have continued growing globally. Reports about MOOCs in both the press and scholarly publications began to grow significantly in 2013 (Sánchez-Vera, Leon Urrutia, & Davis, 2015; Zancanaro & Domingues, 2017) and, since then, more and more researchers have joined the discussions, developing them to explore various new topics. To contribute to the literature of MOOC studies, this doctoral thesis begins with an in-depth analysis of the background, history, growth, and vision, and proposes a tentative definition of MOOCs. Meanwhile, by conducting bibliometric research to review MOOC studies conducted between 2015 and 2017, this thesis fills in the gap that has existed due to a lack of systematic reviews of MOOC literature since 2015. The results of the bibliometric research summarised the relevant MOOC research into nine categories, including learner focused, commentary and concepts, case reports or evaluations, pedagogy, curriculum and design, course object focused, provider focused, technology, systematic review of literature, and learning analytics and big data. They also suggested a limited amount of provider focused research, which became the research interest and focus of this thesis. In the centre of the Europe, Swiss universities have marched forward in the MOOC movement, together with other over 550 universities (Shah, 2016) around the world. Università della Svizzera italiana (USI; Lugano, Switzerland), a Swiss public university, became a MOOC provider in 2015 and offered the first MOOC in the topic of eTourism: eTourism: Communication Perspectives. This doctoral thesis is closely related to this university-level initiative, which was dedicated to producing the first pilot MOOC at USI. Therefore, the cases chosen by this thesis are positioned in the discipline of tourism and hospitality. The first MOOC with a large audience taught artificial intelligence in 2011 (Zancanaro & Domingues, 2017). Nowadays, MOOCs have broken the barrier of space and time to educate the masses in a wide range of subjects. However, the provision of MOOCs in the subject of tourism and hospitality did not appear until 2013, when two MOOCs from two American universities became available. In the past four years since these MOOCs were launched, the number of tourism and hospitality MOOCs available in the market has remained limited (Tracey, Murphy, & Horton-Tognazzini, 2016). This scarcity contradicts the fact that tourism and hospitality is the field that contributes the most to the employment of the global workforce. Pressing problems, such as high turnover, seasonality, and new global challenges have urged for solutions to quickly training people working in this area to become available (Cantoni, Kalbaska, & Inversini, 2009). ▼ According to the socioecological model of female sociality, females living in environments with clumped resources should exhibit strong, linear dominance hierarchies and females in the upper part of these hierarchies should receive less aggression, gain better access to food and receive more grooming than their lower ranked counterparts. This dissertation investigates the predictions of this model using females in a group of bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata). It also investigates the effects of three food distributions (0.25 m², 1 m², and 4 m²) on female aggression. This group had a moderately linear dominance hierarchy (0.63 Modified Landau Index). Although aggressive behavior increased during the feeding experiments, the overall strength of the dominance hierarchy was not significantly affected by an increase in food clumping. Higher ranked females did not receive more grooming than lower ranked females. Females engaged in both reciprocal (12.6%) and non-reciprocal bouts (87.4 %) of grooming and reciprocal grooming was time matched. Although most grooming was not immediately reciprocated, females did not appear to be trading grooming for another commodity, except, potentially, for coalitionary support. Grooming was more reciprocal across bouts than within bouts showing increased grooming reciprocity between partners over time. This long-term reciprocity suggests that bonnet macaque females reciprocate grooming over long spans of time effectively increasing the proportion of reciprocal grooming and decreasing the amount traded in a biological market. Females showed different types of competition as the experimental food distribution was decreased. High ranking females consumed more than low ranking females in each distribution. The greatest rank asymmetry in feeding was found in the highly clumped condition due to the ability of dominant individuals to monopolize the feeding platform. However, the number of aggressive acts among females was significantly lower in both clumped distributions than in the dispersed condition. Usurpation, as measured by agonistic acts, was higher in the dispersed condition, but competition through monopolization was greatest in the highly clumped condition as expected by the socioecological model. Competition in the highly clumped condition could not be measured by quantity of agonistic behavior illustrating the importance of distinguishing between monopolizability and usurpability when analyzing levels of competition

This dissertation is an explorative study of the importance of participative communication conducted at one South African organization. The influence of the external democratic environment on the internal organizational environment was discussed within the broad parameters of the open systems approach. The new labour legislation in South Africa, the new Labour Relations Act (NLRA), emphasizes democratic principles and values. Participative management is emphasized as a management style that should be encouraged. Access to information and employee participation in organizational operation are indicated as key components in the move towards more participative organizational environments. The renewed importance of an organizational context that supports worker participation processes emphasizes the need to investigate how a participative environment can most effectively be established. Information sharing and participation in decision-making require effective communication structures and an environment that supports and encourages employee involvement. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of effective communication in participative organizational contexts with specific focus on South Africa. The newly emphasized democratic external democratic external environment requires the encouragement of effective participative management. The study advocated that communication structures as mechanisms for participation in organizational decisionmaking should therefore be critically analyzed. In order to ensure effective communication in participative environments, communication effectiveness was formulated in terms of specific research objectives that were explored, namely information efficiency (availability of information), communication channels available for information and the number of channels available for participation. Variables that could possibly influence these theoretical constructs were identified and explored, including job level, union membership, workplace forum membership, workplace forum participation, fear of participation and communication climate. In the literature study consideration was given to recognized theories related to the systems approach, climate and culture and participative management. The organizational internal culture was also discussed and considered, as cultural change should play a major role in the move towards a participative culture. The empirical part of the study was conducted as a case study at Columbus Stainless. Research objectives in terms of the aim of the study were explored indicating the importance of participative communication by measuring specific theoretical constructs as formulated in terms of the theoretical framework. ▼ This qualitative case study, framed by a constructivist perspective, addresses a deficit in the literature and the knowledge base of a first year experience (FYE) academic program at a large, urban university regarding freshmen perceptions of meaningfulness in their courses. Existing studies identify concepts related to meaningfulness, but do not shed light on attributes which may inhere in those. These studies are inadequate for FYE curriculum planning due to their discipline specific contexts, quantitative nature, or sole focus on motivation. Furthermore, existing conceptualizations present meaningfulness from the etic (faculty/researcher) perspective rather than the emic (student). This is especially problematic in a postmodern era in which some scholars propose that students experience the classroom differently than educators. Purposeful sampling identified student participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and participants provided reflective journals throughout the data collection period. Interviews and journals were based on exploratory research questions related to the words participants use to convey meaningfulness, the experiences they find meaningful, and “what about” experiences they find meaningful. Students shared insights regarding what problems prevent meaningfulness. Data collection and analysis occurred in conjunction with the transcription of interviews, note-taking about emerging themes, member checking of transcripts and ideas regarding coded themes, review of appropriate literature, and exploration of theories and existing ideas. Trustworthiness and credibility existed through measures of triangulation that promote accuracy of data and findings. Analysis led to the creation of categories to answer the four guiding research questions. Integration of those categories with scholarship in curriculum studies and educational psychology provided insight and discussion regarding students’ perceptions of meaningfulness in first year experience courses. The idea of academic states (emotional transition, academic pragmatism, and survival) emerged from participants’ words describing their experiences. Interactive learning (lectures, group discussions, and practice) and opportunities where students were offered challenge/choice were practices associated with meaningfulness. Energy and comfort were the underlying aspects of experiences perceived as meaningful, and participants offered insights into what problems may exist that prevent students from perceiving their courses as being meaningful, or having meaningful aspects (once n’ done and checklist approaches). Why do rebels sometimes go to war with each other, weakening their position againsttheir common enemy, the state? This dissertation compares two cases of intra-rebel warthat pose an especially difficult puzzle for existing theories of intra-rebel war: thefighting between the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA in Belfast (1969-1980) andwar among Kurdish revolutionaries in Turkey (1974-1980). These two cases are puzzlingbecause both occurred in areas where the state was strong, and therefore able to capitalizeoperationally and politically on rebel fratricide. By comparing these two cases, thisdissertation argues that broadly similar causal mechanisms can help to explain theseintra-rebel wars.In both cases, rebel organizations were shaped by their involvement in defensiveviolence in response to repression from the state and state-aligned attackers. Learning tocounteract this violence changed the operational and cultural character of theseorganizations, with downstream effects on how these organizations strategicallyappraised the costs and benefits of using violence against rivals. Furthermore, theseorganizational changes led to an increased frequency of violence that was non-strategic;that is, it was not performed as the result of a considered and thorough decision-makingprocess. In combination, these mechanisms promoted repeated spirals of fratricidal violence that progressively altered threat perceptions, and thereby encouraged riskier, more concerted applications of violence against rivals. This dissertation fashions thiscomparative explanation into a generalizable argument about the causes of intra-rebelwar in strong states, and provides initial testing of the arguments with two shadow cases,taken from the Algerian independence movement in France and the Sinhalese leftistinsurgency in Sri Lanka.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine a potential variation between students who persist toward their educational goals from those students who are not able to persist from a specific population of adult learners. The Grit Scale-S (referred to as Grit Scale for the purpose of this study) was used to measure the level of persistence for adults who have returned to complete high school diplomas at an adult charter high school. Through quantitative analysis, this study compares and contrasts the scores on the same Grit Scale for a total of 134 students who are successful in reaching their educational goals scores and for those who are not successful. Qualitative analysis provided individual stories and experiences of a small group of five students who did not complete the school term under study. The results of the study indicated that there was not a significant difference on scores on the Grit-S between those students who completed the school term and those who did not. In spite of this result on the quantitative analysis students who completed the term did have a higher mean score on the Grit-S than those who did not complete the term. Those students who did not complete the term successfully and who were included in a semi-structured interview revealed several different reasons for their lack of educational success. All five interviewed revealed that they intended to complete their high school diploma when the reasons for their lack of success were resolved. In the mixed methods analysis of this data it was suggested that students who were able to successfully complete the term possibly faced the same barriers as those students who did not successfully complete the term. So, as other researchers have surmised the difference between success and lack of success in reaching educational goals most likely can be attributed to something other than just the barriers faced by students in reaching their goal. ▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the effect that case-based instructional methodology had on student’s development of critical thinking skills, cognitive engagement and learning as compared to the lecture-based instructional methodology. The experimental design consisted of two grade 12 high school biology classes being taught a unit of study with two different teaching methodologies. Each class was taught half the unit with case-based instruction and the other half of the unit using lecture-based instruction. The two classes were taught opposite halves using these instructional methodologies. The Applied Critical Thinking Measure was used to determine the students’ level of development of their critical thinking skills. The measure consisted of five scenarios that required students to read, identify the objective, ask questions that would clarify their understanding, draw upon existing information or list new information needed, and draw a conclusion with supporting statements. Cognitive engagement was measured by direct observations using a criterion checklist of 14 items. The teacher-researcher and her colleague designed three artifacts to measure student learning. T-tests were used to compare the mean scores of the two classes on each of the artifacts collected for student learning. The inferential statistics showed that student learning improved during the case-based teaching section of the unit. The observations showed an increase in cognitive engagement during the case-based instructional section of the unit. There was no significant difference in the mean scores for students’ critical thinking skills in Class 1, but there was a significant difference in the mean scores for Class 2. The difference appears modest but considering the duration of the study it is a notable development. The scope of this study addresses a knowledge gap regarding the use of case-based teaching methodology in high school. The implications are meaningful in that case-based teaching has shown to have an impact on cognitive engagement and student learning in a high school biology classroom. ▼ Inter-organisational knowledge transfer is of central interest both as an academic topic and in business practice. However, despite the attention given to the importance of this subject from different perspectives in various contexts, little is known about how knowledge is transferred from vendors to clients in information systems (IS) outsourcing. This research attempts to address this apparent theoretical and empirical deficiency by providing a deeper understanding and more holistic analysis of the key factors which facilitate or inhibit knowledge transfer success in IS outsourcing. This study employed a qualitative, multiple case study approach in the interpretive paradigm. Data was collected mainly from the IS departments of three public sector organisations in Oman. Oman was chosen as the context for the study due to its rapid growth in recent years and the opportunity to consider the many major IS outsourcing projects which have been undertaken by its public sector. Through semi-structured interviews, this study explored the perspectives of the internal IS staff on their experience of knowledge transfer and learning from vendors through various IS outsourcing projects. Written and electronic documentations as well as non-participant observations also served as important triangulation and complementary sources in understanding the phenomenon being studied and as means of gaining additional perspectives and further insights on key issues. The empirical evidence demonstrated that there are five sets of factors which facilitate or inhibit knowledge transfer success in IS outsourcing. These are: knowledge (knowledge tacitness and knowledge complexity), client (learning intent, absorptive capacity and motivation), vendor (vendor capability, vendor credibility and vendor openness), relationship (relationship quality, relationship duration, relationship governance and organisational distance) and knowledge transfer mechanisms (formal and informal). The findings of this study contributed and extended the growing body of research on IS outsourcing by developing a novel, holistic conceptual framework which examined five sets of factors that impact knowledge transfer success. Additionally, it provided prescriptive value for practitioners seeking to realise efficient and effective knowledge transfer in IS outsourcing.

▼ This study explored school-wide technology integration at two sites where traditional barriers to technology were minimized. Traditional barriers include access to technology and support to integrate technology. A school-wide technology integration model was introduced at both sites ten years ago. Now, ten years later, what is being sustained? In particular, what were the stories of sustainability concerning school-wide technology integration. What afforded and constrained technology integration over the course of ten years? Data were collected via interviews, observations, and document analysis at two sites within the same southern state over periods of five and four days. Participants were purposively sampled based on the number of years employed at each site. I interviewed faculty members who were present during initial implementation to the extent possible. Additionally I interviewed school-level administration and the media coordinator, regardless of number of years at the sites as they were key stakeholders within the model being implemented. Looking at each site independently and then looking across sites yielded much information. The first site, Basking Elementary, was having a difficult time sustaining implementation. While there were literally signs stating the model was at the school, in practice it was much harder to see evidence. Faculty members interviewed spoke of difficulties implementing the model but also of the benefits of the model. At the second site, implementation was strong and had in fact spread to other schools within the district. Teachers spoke of frustrations with the model, but integration was continuing. Adequate funding is crucial as is professional development geared toward new faculty, including new leadership, and explaining the how and why of the model is important to sustain the work begun ten years ago. Teacher-buy in, generated by engaged leadership, and developing a cohesive school culture is also important to sustaining technology integration over time.; Culture, Technology Advisors/Committee Members: Barbara Levin (advisor).

▼ This dissertation examines the human rights claims of two Afro-descendant communities, namely the community of Tierrabomba in Colombia and the community of Orinoco in Nicaragua. It analyzes how these human rights claims are protected in international human rights and domestic legal systems and in practice. This dissertation demonstrates that there is not one legal framework applicable to all Afro-descendant communities due to the cultural, economic, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of this population group. There is a need to tailor the nature and scope of the relevant international and domestic legal protections to the specific circumstances of the communities and their territorial States in order to adequately protect their legal claims. A locally focused approach is necessary to highlight the gaps in the different legal orders applicable to Afro-descendants and to shed light on the effectiveness of the relevant legal norms on the ground. To demonstrate this argument, this dissertation employed a multi-method approach, combining legal doctrinal research with a field study in the communities concerned. Field research revealed the communities’ human rights claims and living conditions. Through the doctrinal legal research, this dissertation analyzed the exact nature and scope of the relevant international human rights provisions and their incorporation into the domestic legislations of Colombia and Nicaragua. It then compared these international and domestic legal frameworks with the realities in the communities concerned to identify any gaps in implementation.This dissertation found that the applicable international human rights law and legal systems of Colombia and Nicaragua only partially protect the human rights claims of the communities concerned, and any protection implemented on the ground is ineffective. The communities concerned demand use of their ancestral land, access to justice, and other fundamental rights to protect their community-oriented way of life. The legal analysis showed that the applicable legal norms primarily focus on the folkloric and material aspects of culture, such as unique religious rituals and traditional economic activities. This does not reflect the communities concerned’s understanding of culture as a way of life. Additionally, conflicting legal norms applicable to the human rights claims of the communities concerned weaken their legal protections while domestic laws mostly lack effective remedies to enforce human rights provisions. Fear of threats of violence from non-State actors and State neglect further jeopardize the rights’ implementation on the ground.To overcome these legal and practical challenges in the communities concerned, this dissertation suggests a set of recommendations for human rights scholars and practitioners. For human rights scholarship, these recommendations center around the integration of empirical research into legal studies and technical analyses of the law.
