▼ The purpose of this study was to examine school district superintendents’ perceptions of processes and strategies that are successful in passing a school bond referendum in school districts not growing in student population and have a total student enrollment of 1,000 to 3,500. Specifically, this study gave close examination to school district superintendents’ perceptions of (a) contributing factors that lead to the successful passing of a school bond referendum, (b) successful strategies that school districts utilize to successfully pass school bond referendums, (c) how superintendents’ of school districts perceive they influence the community will to vote in favor of the bond referendum, (d) perceived community barriers when attempting to pass a school bond referendum, and (e) additional challenges faced in the successful passing of a school bond referendum. Research indicated that passing a school bond referendum can determine the direction for a school district for many years to come (Faltys, 2006). Research also stated that a superintendents’ knowledge of the perceptions of the community and the processes that go into a successful bond referendum can lead to success on Election Day (R. Stein, personal communication, June 23, 2014). This study is significant because it will expand the body of knowledge related to the challenges superintendents experience in passing a bond referendum in a district with no student enrollment growth and strategies that contribute to the successful passing of a school bond referendum. viii Participants for this study included seven superintendents from Texas school districts not experiencing student enrollment growth and have an enrollment of 1,000 to 3,500 students. Semi-structured interviews consisted of 14 open-ended and close-ended questions and were conducted, audio recorded, and transcribed. Transcribed data were analyzed using a general inductive approach (Thomas, 2003) to identify emerging themes. Findings and implications related to policy and practice for superintendents and other district and community leaders were discussed and recommendations were provided that might assist public school leaders in the successful passing of school bond referendums. The results from the research questions identified superintendents’ perceptions that contributed to the successful passing of bond referendum and identified six emerging themes: (a) communicate the facts of the bond as often as possible, (b) be transparent to establish trust throughout the bond process, (c) build relationships with stakeholders in the community, (d) build community alliances to assist in strategic communication to voters, (e) solicit the opinion of experts in the bond process, and (f) be visible throughout the bond process. In this phenomenological qualitative study, the researcher used a content analysis to compare the perceptions that superintendents have regarding strategies used in passing a school bond referendum. ▼ Τhis thesis investigates a series of issues related to European bond markets in an attempt to shed light into market participant behavior. The first issue is related to bond investor reaction to unanticipated information and examines whether investors in government bond securities react efficiently to the information implied by extreme yield changes, or in other words, whether an average bond yield is close to zero during the period following a positive or negative shock. If investors underreact, then a positive (negative) shock is followed by an average positive (negative) yield, and when there is overreaction, subsequent yields are in the opposite direction. Daily redemption yields of 2-year, 5-year, and 10-year Benchmark government bonds are employed for 14 countries in order to test for differences in the behavior of investors with different investment horizons, while the sample is divided into 2 sub-periods, (1991-2006 and 2007-2011), in order to test for the stability of the results over-time. It is interesting to note that the positive yield shocks are more frequent than the negative yield shocks, while long term bonds exhibit weaker reaction to shocks in comparison to short and medium term securities. Overall, investors react efficiently or underreact to shocks in most markets, especially during the 1999-2007 period. It is worth mentioning that in short term bonds, investors overreact to extreme negative yield changes in Portugal during both subperiods, as well as to Portuguese positive shocks before 2007. Regarding the long term bonds of the four European countries with fiscal imbalances, only a visual inspection shows a shift in investors’ reaction after 2007, but this trend is not supported by our further analysis. The second issue examines the reaction of bond and equity investors to rating change announcements and tests whether rating announcements in one market affect returns and volatility in another market. We employ daily data on 10 year government bond yields for Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Ireland and daily market prices for the equity indices ATHEX Composite, PSI-20, IBEX-35, MSCI Italy and ISEQ. We use rating changes from Moody’s and Standard and Poors’s, and we divide our sample in the before-crisis period (2001-2008) and the crisis period (2009-2013). It is interesting to note that there are very few upgrades during the sample period, as most countries retain stable rating until the crisis, and the changes consist mainly from downgrades during the recent period. By the use of an event study methodology, we find that, overall, bond and stock markets seem to react efficiently to credit rating changes, indicating that the information contained in a rating change announcement is already incorporated in prices in the sample markets. ▼ In Part 1, we study the impact of bond exchange listing in the US publicly traded corporate bond market. Overall, we find that listed corporate bonds have lower bid-ask spreads than unlisted corporate bonds. We specifically show that listed bond spreads are $0.14 lower than unlisted bond spreads. We find that execution venue matters for listed bonds, and that listed bond trades that execute on the NYSE have higher trading costs than listed bond trades that execute off-NYSE. We show that listed bonds are more volatile than unlisted bonds. Lastly, we study bond trading around earnings announcements. We find no evidence that listing influences institutional (or large trading) activity in bonds. In Part 2, we study municipal bond market activity before, during, and after natural disasters (tornados, wildfires, and hurricanes/tropical storms). Using a sample of municipal bond trades from 2010 to 2013, we find that natural disasters influence municipal bond trading. Specifically, we show that spreads are lower on both tornado and wildfire event days and during following five trading days than during the preceding five trading days. While we do not document a relation between hurricane events and spreads, we show that spreads fall during the five days following the hurricane compared to the five trading days before the event. Generally, we document an increase in dollar volume in the five trading days following all three types of natural disasters. We also determine that linkages exist between the bonds affected by natural disasters and related bonds. In Part 3, we study municipal bond trading activity before, during, and after announcements of government officials’ misconduct. Using a sample of over 39,000,000 trades in nearly 500,000 bonds, we find that spreads are higher on news, indictment announcement, and trial verdict announcement days than other trading days. Spreads remain elevated through the five trading days following the announcement. We also find that large bond trades account for the majority of price discovery on event days. ▼ Nowick and co-workers have reported that ethylene-bridged triureas can be synthesised with complete conformational control by judicious use of steric hindrance and hydrogen bonding. The concept of complete but switchable conformational control of these structures has not been investigated and is of interest as it gains access to dynamic peptide mimics with switchable hydrogen-bond directionality. Previous work in the Clayden group has shown that achiral oligourea-derived foldamers can communicate stereochemical information by binding a chiral ligand and inducing a helical excess.2 This served as the first example of reversible hydrogen-bond directionality in a synthetic foldamer. In our design, the global directionality of an ethylene-bridged oligourea foldamer can be controlled by applying an electronic bias at one terminus. When terminated with a hydrogenbond acceptor (HBA), the global directionality of the foldamer is defined and controlled owing to the hydrogen bond between the HBA and the ureido proton of the adjacent urea, and the hydrogen bonding between the ureas in the foldamer. The orientation of the final urea can be inferred from variable-temperature 1H NMR and NOE studies of the ureido protons and a benzylic methylene spectroscopic reporter. The opposite directionality can be accessed by using a terminal hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) instead of an HBA. The directionality of these foldamers can be switched by employing a terminal 2-pyridyl group, which can be switched between an HBD and an HBA by protonation/deprotonation. Upon protonation, the first urea reorients in order to hydrogen bond to the resultant pyridinium. This reorientation is communicated as binary information throughout the rest of the foldamer, resulting in a global directionality switch. Preliminary experiments on effecting the switching process with the light-induced photodissociation/association of a photoacid have been performed. Investigations into directionality-switchable foldamers with binding sites complementary to those of DNA nucleobases have been conducted. Different spectroscopic or chemical outputs at the reporting terminus have also been explored. Ethylene-bridged oligoureas represent a new class of foldamers that can undergo a global directionality switch in response to pH change or exposure to light, and could be amenable to DNA ligand binding. The concept of switching hydrogen-bond directionality in foldamers is a significant simplification of how biological systems store and communicate information and could provide access to interesting and useful chemical and biomimetic functions.

Covered bonds are instruments characterized by specific features that make this product unique and considered by market players as the safest after government bonds. The two types till now existent have as main difference the legal framework. This work studies the two European countries that issued covered bonds before a legislative framework has been creates. The legal framework creates a standardized instrument. In this work we intend to demonstrate the legislation effect on the pricing of covered bonds through a linear regression with variables to evaluate covered bonds and two dummies to capture the impact of special covered bonds law. Empirical results suggest that, although investors seem to favour this type of bonds compared with senior bonds, or even structured covered bonds, we cannot find strong statistical evidence of this relation. This work also defines the characteristics that distinguish these bonds from any other type of bonds and provides a description of financial markets in general and of the covered bond market over the last years.

As obrigações hipotecárias são instrumentos que se caracterizam por certas particularidades que tornam este produto único, além de serem considerados pelos agentes de mercado as mais seguras a seguir às obrigações de governo. Os dois tipos até hoje existentes têm como principal diferença o quadro jurídico. A metodologia seguida neste estudo baseia-se na análise dos dois países europeus que emitiram obrigações hipotecárias antes de um quadro legislativo ter sido promulgado. O quadro legal cria um instrumento padronizado. Neste trabalho propusemos demonstrar o efeito da legislação sobre os preços de obrigações hipotecárias através de uma regressão linear com variáveis para avaliar obrigações hipotecárias e duas dummies para captar o impacto do quadro legislativo de obrigações hipotecárias. Os resultados empíricos sugerem que, embora os investidores pareçam favorecer este tipo de títulos em comparação com títulos senior, ou mesmo obrigações hipotecárias estruturadas, não é possível detectar uma forte evidência estatística dessa relação. Neste trabalho podemos encontrar também as características que distinguem estas obrigações de qualquer outro tipo de obrigações e uma descrição dos mercados financeiros em geral e do mercado de obrigações hipotecárias dos últimos anos.

▼ Proteases play an intricate role in the numerous functions of a living organism. Proteases are responsible for the cleavage of proteins into smaller fragments by catalysing the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. The class of cysteine proteases have a cysteine thiol group in their active site have been found in lower and higher organisms. They have been investigated as promising drug targets for various diseases due to their fundamental functions in catabolism and protein processing. The thermal stability of a protease is a key characteristic feature that is largely dependent on its amino acid sequence and composition and quantified through the determination of its melting temperature (TM). Papain is the most well characterised cysteine protease and is commonly used as a model for other cysteine proteases. Congopain is the major cysteine protease of Trypanosoma congolense which has been identified as the main causative agent of trypanosomiasis in livestock. The thermal stability for papain and congopain were investigated in this study via the thermal shift assay. Papain was purchased and the catalytic domain of congopain was expressed using the Pichia pastoris yeast expression system. The thermal stability of the proteases were determined under neutral pH conditions and the effect of pH and ligand binding were evaluated to determine if the proteases could be further stabilised. The most stable forms of papain and the catalytic domain of congopain in its monomeric form was observed at pH 5.0 with 50 μM chymostatin. The thermal stability of both cysteine proteases was successfully evaluated via the thermal shift assay and conditions to further stabilise papain and the catalytic domain of congopain were determined. The thermal shift assay has been proven to be a reliable technique in identifying factors which increase the stability of a protein. More specifically, the technique serves as a simple and primary diagnostic tool to screen potential inhibitors of a protein and detect changes in the TM of a protein. ▼ This dissertation examines the cantata Simon Bore the Cross by the composer Margaret Bonds and the poet Langston Hughes, a work that has never been studied before. It includes background on Bonds and an in-depth look at the letters between Bonds and Hughes, a correspondence which spanned over three decades and which has never been examined in its entirety. It also includes a discussion of the available drafts of the cantata libretto and music, and a detailed analysis of the final piano-vocal autograph score. Finally, it will discuss the ways in which Bonds' and Hughes' pride in their African-American heritage influenced their art. Langston Hughes was at the center of the Harlem Renaissance in New York City in the 1920s, a movement dedicated to using the arts to build pride in African-American identity. A decade later, the composer and pianist Margaret Bonds was at the center of the Chicago Black Renaissance. Both Bonds and Hughes, who became lifelong friends, believed in focusing on positive black role models as characters, and in using music written by black composers to create a sense of pride and excitement in African-American heritage and community. In much of their work, including Simon Bore the Cross, they achieve this by placing black characters at the center of the action to create a sense of historical connection among the black community to important Biblical events, and by integrating African-American spirituals into the music. Simon Bore the Cross was thought to be lost until a complete piano-vocal score was acquired by Georgetown University in 2014. Hughes' drafts of his libretto for this work are at Yale University. Both institutions also preserve a substantial amount of correspondence between Bonds and Hughes. By highlighting this overlooked work, I hope to generate interest in Bonds' neglected but significant contributions to the American musical canon. ▼ A partial equilibrium valuation model for a security, based on the idea of contingent claims analysis, was first developed by Black & Scholes. The model was considerably extended by Herton, who showed how the approach could be used to value liability instruments. Valuation models for default-free bonds, by treating them as contingent upon the value of the instantaneously riskfree interest rate, have been developed by Cox, Ingersoll & Ross, Brennan & Schwartz, Vasicek and Richards. There has, however, not been much attention directed towards the empirical testing of these valuation models of default-free bonds. This research is an attempt in that direction. Our attention is confined to retractable and extendible bonds. Central to arriving at any equilibrium model of bond valuation is the assumption about the instantaneously riskless interest rate process, since the bond value is treated as contingent upon it. These bond valuation models are partial equilibrium models, since the interest rate is assumed as exogenous to them. The choice of the interest rate process is made subject to some restrictions on its behaviour which are based on expected properties of interest rates. The interest rate process adopted in this study is a generalization of that used by Vasicek and Cox, Ingersoll & Ross., The properties of the chosen mathematical model are investigated to ascertain whether it conforms to those expected of an interest rate process based on economic reasoning. We go on to develop alternate estimation methods for the parameters of the interest rate process, using data on a realization of the process. One "exact" method and two others based on approximations are outlined. It is observed that the "exact" method is not available to the complete family of processes included in the continuous time stochastic specification assumed to model interest rates. The asymptotic properties of the estimators from the "exact" method are known from the existing literature. However, since we would have to adopt one of the approximate methods, we need to know something about the properties of the estimators based on these approaches. This could not be derived analytically and so a Monte Carlo study is conducted. The results seem to indicate that the properties of the estimators from the three methods are not very different. The yield to maturity on 91-day Canadian Federal Government Treasury bills, on the date of issue, is chosen as the proxy for the instantaneously riskfree interest rate. The impact of using such a proxy is briefly investigated and found to be negligible. The bond sample chosen is the complete issues of retractable and extendible bonds made by the Government of Canada. There were 20 issues between January 1959 and October 1975, and weekly prices on all these bonds are available in the Bank of Canada Review. To arrive at the final bond valuation equation, some assumptions are made about the term structure of interest rates. ▼ Nowick and co-workers have reported that ethylene-bridged triureas can be synthesised with complete conformational control by judicious use of steric hindrance and hydrogen bonding. The concept of complete but switchable conformational control of these structures has not been investigated and is of interest as it gains access to dynamic peptide mimics with switchable hydrogen-bond directionality. Previous work in the Clayden group has shown that achiral oligourea-derived foldamers can communicate stereochemical information by binding a chiral ligand and inducing a helical excess.2 This served as the first example of reversible hydrogen-bond directionality in a synthetic foldamer. In our design, the global directionality of an ethylene-bridged oligourea foldamer can be controlled by applying an electronic bias at one terminus. When terminated with a hydrogenbond acceptor (HBA), the global directionality of the foldamer is defined and controlled owing to the hydrogen bond between the HBA and the ureido proton of the adjacent urea, and the hydrogen bonding between the ureas in the foldamer. The orientation of the final urea can be inferred from variable-temperature 1H NMR and NOE studies of the ureido protons and a benzylic methylene spectroscopic reporter. The opposite directionality can be accessed by using a terminal hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) instead of an HBA. The directionality of these foldamers can be switched by employing a terminal 2-pyridyl group, which can be switched between an HBD and an HBA by protonation/deprotonation. Upon protonation, the first urea reorients in order to hydrogen bond to the resultant pyridinium. This reorientation is communicated as binary information throughout the rest of the foldamer, resulting in a global directionality switch. Preliminary experiments on effecting the switching process with the light-induced photodissociation/association of a photoacid have been performed. Investigations into directionality-switchable foldamers with binding sites complementary to those of DNA nucleobases have been conducted. Different spectroscopic or chemical outputs at the reporting terminus have also been explored. Ethylene-bridged oligoureas represent a new class of foldamers that can undergo a global directionality switch in response to pH change or exposure to light, and could be amenable to DNA ligand binding. The concept of switching hydrogen-bond directionality in foldamers is a significant simplification of how biological systems store and communicate information and could provide access to interesting and useful chemical and biomimetic functions.

Since the initial report of pincer complexes in the late 1960’s, much research has been undertaken to understand the reactivity and applicability of these complexes. This thesis aims to add to the rich knowledge of pincer complexes and the activation of small molecules to lead to interesting chemical transformations. Advantageously, the pincer framework can be easily adapted by changing different aspects of the ligand. The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of (Me-PCP)IrHn, in which the para position on the backbone of the catalyst has been changed from a hydrogen to a methyl group is reported. Finally, attempts to isolate the highly reactive 3-coordinate 14-electron (Me-PCP)Ir species are also addressed. Rather than isolation or observance of any active catalytic species proposed as a 14e-, agostic, solvated, or dimeric species, it has been found that the cyclometalation or C-H activation of the tbutyl group attached to one of the phosphorous atoms occurs readily. Characterization of cyclometalated complexes and an interesting cyclometalated insertion product is described. Two different mechanisms are proposed and discussed in relation to previously cited pathways for the formation of each complex. The knowledge of the activation and binding of oxygen as well as the reactivity of oxidants and isolation of reactive intermediates is limited. The synthesis and characterization of two (Me-PCP)Ir oxygen species is detailed via reaction with oxygen directly followed by a discussion of the reactivity with other oxidants. A combined experimental and computational study was completed to determine the binding energies for the addition of a variety of ligands to the metal center of (PCP)IrHCl, (PCP)IrH2, and the (PCP)Ir fragment. The thermodynamics were determined directly through equilibrium reactions and compared to values derived from DFT calculations utilizing a variety of functionals with good agreement. Finally, the activation of hydrazine and related compounds by the parent (PCP)IrH2 complex is achieved and leads to both dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of hydrazine by pincer iridium (PCP) type catalysts to synthesize N2, H2 and NH3. The reactivity of other pincer complexes for this reaction will be compared and a computationally calculated mechanism for both pathways will be discussed along with supporting experimental evidence.
