The digital currency Bitcoin has attracted a lot of attention lately, partly because of its high volatility and rising popularity. The purpose of this study was to find out why companies have chosen to implement and accept Bitcoin as a payment method. Furthermore, investigate what costs and benefits companies experience from accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment, as well security concerns and risks related to Bitcoin. The scientific method of observation used to gather information was through qualitative research where interviews were conducted with six different companies that accepts Bitcoin as a means of payment. The study's results indicate that there are several factors that lead to companies choosing to implement Bitcoin as a payment method. It is perceived to be of high level of security as well the risks associated with Bitcoin are not perceived to be major among the respondents. The result showed that the costs of accepting Bitcoin as a means of payment are low for companies but unlike previous studies, it showed very high transaction fees for consumers.

Den digitala valutan Bitcoin har uppmärksammats mycket på senaste tid, bland annat på grund av dess höga volatilitet och stigande popularitet. Syftet med denna studie är att ta reda på varför företag har valt att implementera och använda Bitcoin som ett betalningsalternativ. Dessutom undersöka vilka kostnader och fördelar företag upplever med att acceptera Bitcoin som betalningsmedel, samt hur de ser på säkerheten och risker som kan uppstå. Studien utfördes med ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt där sex intervjuer genomförts med sex olika företag som tar emot Bitcoin som betalningsmedel. Studiens resultat visade på att det är flera olika faktorer som leder till att företag väljer att implementera Bitcoin som betalningsmedel. Den upplevda säkerheten var hög och de risker som förknippas med Bitcoin upplevdes inte som stor hos de tillfrågade respondenterna. Resultatet visade även att kostnaderna med Bitcoin som betalningsmedel är låga för företag, men att de till skillnad från tidigare studier visade på en väldigt hög transaktionskostnad för konsumenter.

I princip hela IT-världen ser på och häpnar medan Blockchain-tekniken växer. Många spekulerar om fördelar och nackdelar med tekniken. Men hur ser egentligen samhället på detta nya sättet att lagra data på? Det finns väldigt lite forskning på hur Blockchain uppfattas i Sverige, hur tekniken uppfattas och vad folk vet om tekniken. Det har inte heller hittats någon undersökning som tar upp graden av tillit privatpersoner har till Blockchain i Sverige och vad för faktorer det är som påverkar privatpersoners tillit. För att tekniken ska kunna accepteras på en större skala behöver man veta vad privatpersoner och konsumenter tycker om tekniken, annars finns det risk att tekniken inte omfamnas i framtiden. Syftet med denna undersökningen är att, på ett explorativt sätt, ta reda på till vilken grad privatpersoner i Sverige har tillit för Blockchain som teknik. Undersökningen skall också, i ett explorativt syfte, identifiera faktorer till varför den svenska befolkningen litar mer eller mindre på Blockchain. Studien använder sig av både kvalitativa och kvantitativa datainsamlingstekniker. Det utfördes en kvalitativ studie i form av personliga intervjuer för att ta reda på vad privatpersoner vet om Blockchain, och vad folk anser är viktiga faktorer som påverkar deras tillit för tekniken. Den kvalitativa undersökningen utfördes för att säkra att den sedan kvantitativa undersökningen fick in så pålitlig data som möjligt. Den kvantitativa undersökningen var en enkätstudie. I enkäten var det frågor som behandlade tillit, kunskap om ämnet, generell inställning till ny teknik och bakgrundsfrågor om respondenten. I analysen har det framgått att 10,47% privatpersoner från undersökningen i Västra Götalands län litar mindre på Blockchain, 19,19% litar inte alls på tekniken, 63,95% litar neutralt på den, 4,1% litar ganska mycket på den och 2,33% litar fullt ut på den. Utifrån detta kan slutsatsen dras att tillitsgraden är relativt låg. Resultatet visade också att det fanns ett antal återkommande faktorer som påverkade privatpersoners tillit för Blockchain. Dessa faktorer var manipulering, decentralisering och att Blockchain anses vara relaterat till svarta marknaden. Vidare kan man utifrån denna undersökning utläsa både en låg kunskapsnivå samt en hög neutral attityd till tekniken. Detta skulle kunna anses som någonting positivt för teknikens framtid då få förutfattade meningar finns. Mer information om Blockchain skulle därmed kunna vara en möjlighet för ökad tillit. För vidare forskning föreslogs det att det bör forskas mer om detta utanför Västra Götalands län och att man bör undersöka om privatpersoner kan tänka sig använda tekniken även om de inte litar på tekniken fullt ut.

▼ Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on tutkia lohkoketjuteknologiaa ja selvittää kuinka sitä voidaan soveltaa tiedostojen tallentamiseen ja aikaleimaamiseen käyttäen Factom lohkoketjua. Samalla käydään läpi lohkoketjuteknologian mahdollistavia tekijöitä. Lohkoketju on yksinkertaisesti selitettynä hajautettu, muuttamaton tietokanta. Nämä ominaisuudet saavutetaan käyttäen P2P verkkomallia, kryptografiaa ja peliteoriaa. P2P verkko pitää huolen lohkoketjun hajautuneisuudesta ja kryptografia takaa lohkoketjun rakenteen. Uusien lohkojen luomisesta ja sääntöjen noudattamisesta vastaa konsensus algoritmi, johon on sovellettu peliteoriaa. Lohkoketju muuttamattoman luonteensa takia soveltuu hyvin virtuaalisten valuuttojen luontiin. Jokainen valuutansiirtotapahtuma voidaan jäljittää valuutan luomishetkestä nykypäivään, mikä takaa sen, että saman valuuttayksikön käyttäminen kahteen kertaan on vaikeaa. Virtuaalisten valuuttojen lisäksi lohkoketju soveltuu hyvin tärkeiden dokumenttien varmentamiseen. Jokainen lohko sisältää luomishetken aikaleiman, joten lohkoon tallennettu data on sidottu tähän ajanhetkeen. Tämä tekee dokumenttien auditoinneista helppoa, sillä lohkoketjussa on todiste dokumentin olemassaolosta tietyssä muodossa tiettynä ajankohtana. Factom lohkoketju tarjoaa helpon ja halvan tavan aikaleimata tiedostoja luotettavasti. Hinta yhden kilotavun tallentamiseen on 0.001 dollaria. Yhteen kilotavuun mahtuu täydellisesti dokumentista hajautusalgoritmilla tuotettu tiiviste, joka toimii dokumentin sormenjälkenä. It also explains the key principles that enables the blockchain technology. Blockchain is simply explained decentralized and immutable database. These qualities are achieved by using P2P networking, cryptography and game theory. P2P network makes sure that blockchain is decentralized and cryptography secures the structure. ▼ Every time we place a bet, we implicitly trust the other participant to pay in the case we win. For this reason if we deal with people we do not know or trust, we do not bet directly with them, and instead we use a casino or other gambling sites. We expect the law or even casino reputation to help us to enforce good behavior. Cryptocurrencies made possible to store and transfer value easily without using centralized control. Given its recent popularity, many decentralized applications have been proposed and implemented on top of them. Among them, gambling. It is currently possible to safely bet with a stranger on random events using cryptocurrencies. We can bet on the value of digital dice, cards or roulette. Neither trust nor centralized entities are required. In this work we propose a protocol on top of Bitcoin to place bets on real world events in a decentralized and trustless fashion. Our protocol uses a set of oracles to bring the outcome of the event on which the bet depends into the blockchain. When a certain threshold of the oracles have reported the same outcome for the event, we unlock the winner s prize. The protocol was designed to automatically move the money to one of the players in that case, so oracles do not take control of the prize, they only decide between two possible outcomes. Economic incentives are placed to encourage good behavior on the participants. Oracles get paid if and only if they provide the right answer, where right is defined as the answer provided by the majority of them. Also, oracles are required to place a deposit to participate. This allows the protocol to establish economic penalties if the oracle fails to answer. Once the bet is placed, the prize is locked waiting for the oracles answer. Players relinquish their control over the money until the oracles decide the winner or a previously defined ti- meout expires. In case of timeout, each player gets half of the prize. Using Bitcoin scripting language, the protocol guarantees fairness and execution correctness with both, a dishonest minority of oracles as well as a dishonest peer, at least once the bet is placed. Before that a dishonest peer can cause limited economic damage to an honest player. Yet the attack produces no net gain: it costs the attacker as much as the amount of the damage done to the victim. Dishonest oracles, before the bet is placed, can cause small economic damage to both players equally, although the cost for this attack is a parameter set by the players. The protocol was implemented and run in the Bitcoin testnet using the official client to ve- rify the transactions. Our implementation is currently available as an Open Source project. Discussion on the trade off between the protocol cost and economic incentives for the par- ticipants are included in this work. We also provide a detailed cost analysis of running the protocol. We believe this work s contribution is a novel way of reasoning and deciding about real world events while integrating the outcome into the blockchain. ▼ CryptoMarket es una empresa chilena que nace con el objetivo de acercar a las personas al mundo de las criptomonedas de manera sencilla, dándole la capacidad a sus usuarios de transar en diversas criptomonedas en su moneda local. Actualmente en CryptoMarket, cerca del 40% de sus usuarios de un total de más de 40.000, acceden a la plataforma web por su dispositivo móvil. Esta plataforma si bien tiene diversas adaptaciones para utilizarse mediante un navegador móvil, no está totalmente adaptada para usarse desde dispositivos móviles. Al inicio de esta memoria, CryptoMarket contaba con una aplicación móvil en que solo se podían ver los precios de sus mercados y los gráficos de precios correspondientes a cada mercado. El objetivo general del trabajo realizado fue desarrollar una solución móvil para la empresa CryptoMarket, en la cual los usuarios pueden hacer diversas acciones de tradingdecriptomonedasdescargandolaaplicación.Estaaplicacióndebesercapaz de entregar una buena experiencia para los usuarios, dándoles la comodidad que esperan al tener una aplicación móvil, pero también la simplicidad y seguridad que acostumbran tener en la plataforma web. Se logró desarrollar la aplicación móvil, que a día de hoy está lanzada en la App Store de iOS de diversos países. La aplicación posee inicio de sesión, evitando que el usuario tenga que ingresar su correo electrónico y contraseña de CryptoMarket cada vez que quiera usar la plataforma. El usuario puede realizar todas las operaciones básicas de trading de criptomonedas como lo son; ver los precios de las criptomonedas en los diferentes mercados, vender y comprar criptomonedas, ver gráficos y datos, historiales de transacciones, cancelar órdenes, etc. Todas estas funcionalidades se lograron conectándose a un servidor ya existente en la empresa mediante API y WebSockets. Se hizo un estudio de usabilidad en donde se encontraron algunos problemas, como la dificultad para encontrar las órdenes de mercado abiertas. Actualmente se está viendo cómo resolver estos problemas en una futura actualización de la aplicación. Desde que se lanzó la aplicación ya se cuenta con cerca de 4.000 usuarios los cuales están agradecidos por entregarles esta solución, como también otorgan feedback para las futuras funcionalidades y pequeños errores que encuentran. ▼ Newly emerging cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology provide a challenging research problem for human geographers. Bitcoin, the first widely implemented cryptocurrency and example of a blockchain architecture, seemingly separates itself from the existing territorial boundedness of nation state currencies via a digital process of algorithmic decentralisation. Proponents declare that utilisation of cryptography to advance blockchain transactions will disrupt the modern centralised structures by which capitalist economies are currently organised: corporations, commercial banks, and central banks. I contest this perspective. The core argument of this thesis is that blockchains must be understood as a spatial problem where power is unevenly distributed across their networks. Secondly, and building upon this principle, it is proposed that algorithmic decentralisation is inherently a contradictory concept by highlighting a number of distinctive points across Bitcoin’s architecture where forms of centralised control are competed for. Thirdly, the thesis describes how online communities, start-up companies, and existing financial institutions exercise power from these many centres by paying close attention to the political ideologies and practices that combine to form a unique technoculture. This research analyses these sociotechnical dynamics, systems, and conditions to make intelligible the political, cultural, and economic geographies of blockchains. In doing so the thesis builds on existing literatures and empirical research pertaining to money/space and code/space to critically evaluate the postulation of blockchain decentralisation. An actor-network inspired ‘follow the thing’ methodology enables the thesis to navigate and trace some of the primary connections between diverse sociotechnical actors that create blockchain economies. The method of ‘following’ extends into an examination of the Bitcoin source code, online forums, and social media activity so as to develop a critical understanding of blockchain’s cultural economic geographies. By tracing both the humans and non-humans of Bitcoin’s infrastructure the way in which transactions are materially tied together through space is outlined. Additionally, the technique of snowball sampling was used to conduct participant observation and semi-structured interviews in the burgeoning Bitcoin/blockchain ecosystem of Silicon Valley, supported by an investigation of key entrepreneurial spaces, such as start-up companies and meet-up groups, in London and New York City. These methods help develop an analytical framework that demonstrates how the technical parameters of blockchains—block size, private key control, mining operations—are altered by people in varied cultural settings and thus practise and shape blockchains in competing ways. The analysis of empirical data frames different ‘spaces’ as strategic passage points through which various practices are increasingly funnelled (Callon, 1986). In den letzten zwei Jahren hat die Verwendung von Kryptowährungen als alternative Zahlungs-möglichkeiten stark zugenommen. Das prominenteste Beispiel hierbei sind Bitcoins, welche durch ihren stark gestiegenen Wert das Interesse vieler Investoren geweckt haben einfache Ge-winne in kurzer Zeit zu machen. Mit der wachsenden Zahl an Bitcoin Nutzer_innen stieg jedoch auch das Risiko möglicher Menschenrechtsverletzungen an. Dementsprechend zielt die vorlie-gende Arbeit darauf ab darzustellen, inwiefern im Kontext von Bitcoin Netzwerken rechtliche Regularien auf europäischer Ebene in der Lage sind Menschenrechte zu schützen oder ob es Ver-besserungsbedarf gibt. Hierfür werden das Recht auf Privatsphäre, das Recht auf Eigentum so-wie das Recht auf Arbeit als Beispiele herangezogen. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht dies in drei Teilen: Zuerst wird das Bitcoin Netzwerk im All-gemeinen beschrieben, seine Funktionsweise, die an ihm geübte Kritik sowie die positiven As-pekte, die es für seine Nutzer_innen so interessant macht. Im weiteren Verlauf werden die aktuell vorherrschenden rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen auf europäischer Ebene unter Berücksichti-gung der sich aus der Europäischen Menschenrechtskonvention sowie der Charter der Europäi-schen Union ergebenden Staatenverpflichtungen analysiert. Hierbei werden auch jene praktischen Aspekte aufgezeigt, die sich für Nutzer_innen hinsichtlich der Ausübung ihrer Rechte sowie für die Staaten hinsichtlich der Regulierung ergeben. Abschließend werden unterschiedliche Ansätze europäischer Staaten hinsichtlich Bitcoins miteinander verglichen um darzustellen, inwieweit die-se menschenrechtsorientiert sind. Auf die Darstellung der Ergebnisse folgen Empfehlungen für Staaten hinsichtlich neuer Ansätze um ihren menschenrechtlichen Verpflichtungen nachzukom-men.

In the past two years, the use of cryptocurrencies as alternative forms of payments has grown exponentially. The most famous example is represented by Bitcoins, whose value has increased so much to attract an ever-growing number of investors, attracted by the prospect of easy gains and in short times. The increase in the number of users was accompanied by an increase in potential violations of human rights. The purpose of this work is therefore to verify whether the regulatory framework in Europe is able to provide adequate protection for the exercise of the right to priva-cy, the right to property and the right to work within the Bitcoin network, or if it is necessary to improve it. In order to verify this situation, this work will be divided into three different phases. A first phase will describe the entire Bitcoin network, its functioning, the associated criticisms and the positive aspects that encourage its use. ▼ Payment channels secured with cryptocurrency as collateral enable users to make many transactions with few blockchain broadcasts. Networks of payment channels have emerged as a proposed solution to Bitcoin’s scaling problem. Since the proposal of the first payment channel network, the Lightning Network, alternatives promising significant improvements, such as the Sprites protocol, have been proposed. Without at-scale implementations to analyze in situ, it is difficult to make meaningful comparisons of payment channel network protocols. In order to bridge this gap, we introduce a new simulation framework that can be used to evaluate how different payment channel network protocols will perform in both the expected and worst cases. Our framework is generic and accommodates benchmarking across different variants of payment channel network protocols, network topologies, routing algorithms, and user behaviors. User spending behavior in our payment channel network simulator is generated based on behavioral modeling techniques used in credit card fraud research. Our simulation is the first payment channel network simulator to seed user behaviors with data from real-world credit card users. Our framework can be used to evaluate expected case performance and resiliency to attacks across different payment channel network protocols and routing algorithms. We demonstrate the utility of our framework through comparisons of the Lightning Network to Sprites. We also compare the proposed decentralized routing algorithm, Flare, to an ideal centralized routing algorithm. Our results reveal that if spending behaviors are similar to those of credit card users, scale-free network topologies achieve higher throughput and resiliency compared to small-world networks. We also confirm that the Sprites protocol enjoys numerous advantages over the Lightning Network including smaller durations, shorter path length payments, and greater resiliency, all of which are most significant in decentralized topologies using decentralized routing algorithms. ▼ This thesis describes a longitudinal study of Bitcoin, the perhaps most popular blockchain based system today. Public blockchains have emerged as a plausible messaging substrate for applications that require highly reliable communication. However, sending messages over existing blockchains can be cumbersome and costly as miners require payment to establish consensus on the sequence of messages, since the electricity consumption needed to run miners is not negligible. The blockchain protocol requires an always growing size of the information stored in it so its scalability is the biggest problem. For that reason we decided to collect and store data locally in our own data structure, necessary for the analysis, allowing us to save up to 10 times the amount of disk space. Today, systems using the blockchain protocol are emerging, and cryptocurrencies are a glaring example of its implementation. Bitcoin represents the largest cryptocurrency on market, and it has to face a massive scale due to its popularity, having in 2012 about fifty thousands transaction per day and reaching now, in 2017, more than three hundred fifty thousands of transactions approved every day. This massive scale in the system leads to a saturation of the messaging substrate, hence performance issues. In this thesis we will focus also on the Bitcoin network performance, in particular, transaction throughput and latency. From 2009 to 2017 a lot of analyses on the blockchain have been performed, enhancing the considerable change in the block size limit, from 256 bytes to 1MB, as an attempt to overcome scalability problems. Different papers were published, discussing whether changing or not the block size limit. In addition, the Bitcoin price increased from ~0.7 to more than 7.000, making the system even more desirable for miners, but causing several complications in the fee and reward mechanism. We evaluate and discuss possible ways to improve this fee mechanism in order to guarantee more revenue for miners along with an user fee optimization. We finally present our own system for longitudinal analysis on the Bitcoin blockchain, BAS. It generates a dataset which contains a significant portion of the whole blockchain, updated on September 2017. We discuss our results and compare them with other evaluations from past years, considering three main key points: scalability, performance and fees/costs. We discuss how scalability affects performance, and how the costs and fees are dependent from them both. We want also to take into consideration the environmental impact of Bitcoin and how it affects the coming of new cryptocurrencies. We evaluate and propose, using machine learning techniques, two different cost prediction models that aim to predict bandwidth for upcoming transactions according the fee they are willing to pay, and the expected revenue for miners according to the time spent mining. ▼ This project engages the study of money—and in particular, payment—as sociotechnical infrastructure, both in terms of information transmission and as vector of relations, memory, and culture. Since 2008, economic downturn paired with high penetration of information and communication technology has led to an explosion of imagination around the money form. Networked information technology has seemed particularly well-suited to rethinking the tasks that money has traditionally performed, such as assigning value, keeping account of it, and transmitting it. Payment—once a siloed and slow-moving sector of banking—is undergoing tremendous innovation from within the Silicon Valley social media industry. To address these developments and uncover their longer histories, this project engages historical, ethnographic, and documentary methodologies. Money can be understood as a communication technology in three ways: a token that can be used to exchange value, a ledger that we use to collectively remember allocations, and a set of rails that undergird and make transactions possible. These analytical categories are used as theoretical entry-points to understanding changes in payment. The dissertation begins with a chapter on the technological and social history of money and communication, attending in particular to tensions between public and private visions of transactional infrastructure in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The remaining chapters engage present and emergent concerns. New "tokens" such as rewards points and frequent flyer miles, derived from payment system interchange, have been circulating alongside traditional currencies. As the tech industry discovers payment, the "ledger" of transactional data becomes a source of value and a commons undergoing enclosure. Control over the flow of transactions through "rails" provides greater potential for proxy censorship, political and otherwise. As we look forward to possible futures of payments, we find new forms of transactional counter-power, such as the cryptographic transactional systems like Bitcoin, which can be understood as token, a ledger, and a rail. ▼ In recent years, massive growth in internet usage has spurred the emergence of complex large-scale networking systems to serve growing user bases, bandwidth and computation requirements. For example, data center facilities – workhorses of today's internet – have evolved to house upward of several hundreds of thousands of servers; content distribution networks with high capacity and wide coverage have emerged as a de facto content dissemination modality, and peer-to-peer applications with hundreds of thousands of users are increasingly becoming popular. At these scales, it becomes critical to operate at high efficiencies as the price of idling resources can be significant. In particular, the interaction between agents (servers, peers etc.) is a defining factor of efficiency in these systems – applications are often communication intensive, whereas agents share links of only limited bandwidth. This necessitates the use of principled algorithms, as efficient communication to a large extent depends on the interaction protocols. We study data center networks and peer-to-peer networks as canonical examples of modern-day large-scale networking systems. Server-to-server interaction is an integral part of the data center's operation. The latency of these interactions is often a significant bottleneck toward overall job completion times. We study complementary approaches toward reducing this latency: (i) design of computation algorithms that minimize interaction and (ii) optimal scheduling algorithms to maximally utilize the network fabric. We also consider peer-to-peer networks as an emerging mode of content distribution and sharing. Unlike data centers, these networks are flexible in their network structure and also scale well, but require decentralized algorithms for control. Of central importance here is the design of a network topology that enables efficient peer interactions for optimal application performance. We propose novel topology designs for two popular applications: (i) multimedia streaming and (ii) anonymity in Bitcoin's peer-to-peer network.
