▼ Thesis presents a two-way wireless
communication link
that is capable of transferring data from a remote module to a
PC/Laptop. The primary need of the wireless link is to periodically
monitor the output from electrochemical microelectrodes deployed in
the field. The system has feature of programmability for the
sensors with configuration bits that are communicated from the base
station. The uniqueness in the design is a
bidirectional
communication interface which allows
communication to be initiated
by the remote side while allowing the base station side to
determine the nature of the
communication packet. The system uses
data transceivers, in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM)
Radio Bands or in the 902–928 MHz (Centre frequency 915 MHz) band,
and employs two way
communication protocols depending on the
required data collection rate and accuracy. The system design
presents the system architecture, the interface logic on the sensor
and user side to transmit/receive the data and the programmability
interface of the sensor data from the PC/Laptop. The base station
(PC/Laptop) manages the transceivers by issuing configuration, data
acquisition, and transmission commands using wireless techniques.
For data acquisition a USB interface has been designed at the base
station to transfer data from transceiver to
Laptop/PDA/PC.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the bidirectional effects of simulated driving and conversations using different speaking modalities. Participants included 30 males and 30 females with no history of speech, language or hearing disorders. The participants were divided into three age groups: 20s, 40s, and 60s. They completed a driving simulation task in isolation and also while speaking on a hand-held or hands-free cell phone or with a passenger in the car. Speech measures included speaking time ratio, mean, and standard deviation of intensity, as well as mean and standard deviation of fundamental frequency in semitones. Driving measures included standard deviation of lane position, mean, and standard deviation of speed, standard deviation of steering wheel position, and the average number of steering wheel turns. There were significant effects of speaking while driving on mean intensity, speaking time ratio, standard deviation of steering wheel position, and the number of steering wheel turns. There were significant gender effects for speaking time ratio, standard deviation of intensity, and mean intensity, with the females having higher speaking time ratios, and the males having a higher standard deviation and mean of intensity. There was a significant age effect for mean fundamental frequency, standard deviation of lane position, and the standard deviation of steering wheel position. For mean fundamental frequency, the 60s group were lower than the 20s group. The 60s group had a higher standard deviation of lane position and standard deviation of steering wheel position. These findings reveal effects on both speaking and driving performance when speaking and driving concurrently. This has potential clinical implications for planning therapy activities that will help individuals generalize their learned skills from quiet, distraction-free clinic rooms to more realistic situations with distractions and background noise.

▼ Relay communication has been shown to be effective to
extend service coverage and mitigate channel impairments. This thesis focuses on
relay selection (RS) of both unidirectional and bidirectional
relay networks employing the amplify-and-forward (AF)
and decode-and-forward (DF) protocols.
This thesis presents four works on RS in two-hop relay networks.
In the first work, we study opportunistic relaying (OR) and
selection cooperation (SC) in
DF-based unidirectional multi-antennas relay networks.
We first propose two joint relay-and-antenna selection
schemes which combine OR and SC, respectively,
with transmit antenna selection.
For each joint selection scheme,
a single best transmit antenna at the source,
a single best relay,
and a single best transmit antenna at this selected relay
are jointly determined.
Then we derive the outage probabilities,
and show that the two schemes achieve the same outage performance.
In the second work, we study RS with
the physical-layer network coding (PNC)
in DF-based bidirectional relay networks.
By modifying the well-known SC and OR,
we first propose two RS schemes for the PNC network:
SC-PNC and OR-PNC.
Then we derive the outage probability
and diversity order of the SC-PNC.
Finally, we show that the OR-PNC achieves the same outage performance
as the SC-PNC.
In the third work, we study RS with
the analog network coding (ANC) and time division broadcast (TDBC),
in AF-based bidirectional relay networks.
We first consider RS schemes
for the ANC and TDBC protocols
based on a max-min criterion.
Then we derive outage probabilities for the ANC and TDBC protocols.
In the fourth work, we study joint relay-and-source selection
in an AF-based bidirectional relay network.
Since RS and opportunistic source selection (OSS) could individually improve
performance of relay networks,
we propose a joint RS-OSS protocol.
In this network, a best source is selected to transmit data
to the other source with the help of a selected best relay.
Then, we derive the outage probability and
average bit-error rate.
The considered RS schemes and obtained outage probability expressions will help the design of two-hop wireless communications in determining the system parameters such as relay location and the transmission power at each terminal.

▼ In this work, we study two problems in information-theoretic security. Firstly, we study a wireless network where two nodes want to securely exchange messages via an honest-but-curious
bidirectional relay. There is no direct link between the user nodes, and all
communication must take place through the relay. The relay behaves like a passive eavesdropper, but otherwise follows the protocol it is assigned. Our objective is to design a scheme where the user nodes can reliably exchange messages such that the relay gets no information about the individual messages. We first describe a perfectly secure scheme using nested lattices, and show that our scheme achieves secrecy regardless of the distribution of the additive noise, and even if this distribution is unknown to the user nodes. Our scheme is explicit, in the sense that for any pair of nested lattices, we give the distribution used for randomization at the encoders to guarantee security. We then give a strongly secure lattice coding scheme, and we characterize the performance of both these schemes in the presence of Gaussian noise. We then extend our perfectly-secure and strongly-secure schemes to obtain a protocol that guarantees end-to-end secrecy in a multichip line network. We also briefly study the robustness of our
bidirectional relaying schemes to channel imperfections.
In the second problem, we consider the scenario where multiple terminals have access to private correlated Gaussian sources and a public noiseless
communication channel. The objective is to generate a group secret key using their sources and public
communication in a way that an eavesdropper having access to the public
communication can obtain no information about the key. We give a nested lattice-based protocol for generating strongly secure secret keys from independent and identically distributed copies of the correlated random variables. Under certain assumptions on the joint distribution of the sources, we derive achievable secret key rates.
The tools used in designing protocols for both these problems are nested lattice codes, which have been widely used in several problems of
communication and security. In this thesis, we also study lattice constructions that permit polynomial-time encoding and decoding. In this regard, we first look at a class of lattices obtained from low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, called Low-density Construction-A (LDA) lattices. We show that high-dimensional LDA lattices have several “goodness” properties that are desirable in many problems of
communication and security. We also present a new class of low-complexity lattice coding schemes that achieve the capacity of the AWGN channel. Codes in this class are obtained by concatenating an inner Construction-A lattice code with an outer Reed-Solomon code or an expander code. We show that this class of codes can achieve the capacity of the AWGN channel with polynomial encoding and decoding complexities. Furthermore, the probability of error decays exponentially in the block length for a fixed transmission rate…

▼ The thesis is composed of two topics: A SOC design for one-time implantable spinal cord stimulation system ï¼SCSï¼, and the design of an inter-chip capacitance coupling circuit.
In the first topic, the SOC design using wireless power and data transmission techniques for the SCS system is presented in this work. The proposed SOC can control 4 electrodes to generate different patterns of stimulation waves. It has multiple modes to drive whole the SCS system. Notably, the SOC contains a novel ASK demodulator which converts the ASK signals into digital signals reliably. The SOC is implemented using a typical 0.18-μm 1P6M CMOS process. The chip area is only 1.71 * 1.41 mm2. Besides, the volume of the implantable SCS pulse generator utilizing this SOC is less than 24 cm3, and the power consumption is only 59.4 mW.
In the second topic, a high-speed inter-chip capacitance coupling circuit is presented. Digital signals between two chips can be transceived through capacitive coupling of the proposed circuit. Notably, the transceivers are designed below the capacitors to attain the area reduction. It is an advanced application for high-speed wafer testing and 3D IC
communication. A prototype chip is presented to achieve 2 Gbps on silicon using a typical 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS process. The chip area is 1045 à 894 μm2. Besides, it only costs 21.47 mW in terms of power consumption. This capacitive coupling technique for high-speed digital circuit has great potential in the coming future.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine interference between concurrently performed speaking and driving tasks. Participants included 60 adults, 30 males and 30 females, with no history of communication disorders. They were divided into three different age groups of 20 participants each: younger (20s), middle-aged (40s), and older (60s). The participants were given a list of topics to consider and were instructed to select eight topics that they could talk about; they completed five practice trials of the driving simulator prior to the experimental recording to eliminate practice effects. Each participant completed the speaking task and driving task both separately and concurrently. The speaking task consisted of producing a monologue about the topics that they had selected. Dependent measures for speech included metrics relating to intensity, fundamental frequency, and the ratio of speaking to pausing time. The simulated driving task involved maintaining a constant speed and lane position on a freeway. Dependent measures for driving included metrics relating to speed, lane position, steering wheel position, and a count of steering wheel turns. Results indicated significant divided attention effects in speaking time ratio, intensity, speed, and steering wheel control. There was a significant age effect for intensity and fundamental frequency as the younger group had less variation with these variables compared to the other age groups. There was a significant age effect for lane position, steering wheel position, and speed as the younger group had less variation in lane and position compared to the other groups and the older group had more variation in speed and steering wheel position compared to the other groups. There was a significant gender effect for intensity and lane position as the females had less variation in intensity and more variation in lane position compared to the males. These findings suggest that divided attention conditions impact both speech and driving performance. The results also shed some light on the effects of age on concurrently performed speech and driving tasks. These findings imply that divided attention conditions should be incorporated in treatment to help patients generalize the skills learned in therapy to everyday communication.

▼ Background: Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) is
an advanced primary care medical home model. This model aimed to
strengthen primary care through regionally-based multi-payer
payment reform and care delivery transformation. To meet CPC+ care
delivery requirements, ambulatory care pharmacists were implemented
in primary care physician offices. In addition, the primary care
offices were partnering with community pharmacists to improve
quality and reduce total cost of care. Community pharmacists
provide a unique perspective in identifying patient barriers and
adherence to care plans. The key to improving quality of care
involves consistent
bidirectional communication. The most
accessible means of
bidirectional communication was a warm-handoff,
defined as a personalized transfer of care between two members of
the health care team. Objective/Purpose:The goal of this project
was to determine if using a structured warm-handoff protocol from
ambulatory pharmacist-to-community pharmacist for high-risk
patients improved the process of patient care. The first objective
was to implement a warm-handoff process between ambulatory care
pharmacists and community pharmacists. The second objective was to
evaluate the impact of the warm-handoff in the patient care
process. The third objective was to assess the impact of the
warm-handoff on patient outcomes. Methods:This cohort-controlled
study examined the difference in standard of care transfer compared
to a warm-handoff transfer. The standard of care patient received
normal pharmacy care from the ambulatory care pharmacists and the
community care pharmacists. The warm-handoff patient also received
the benefit of structured
bidirectional communication to transfer
of care using protocol
communication between the ambulatory care
pharmacists and the community care pharmacists. Data analysis
included descriptive statistics fishes exacts tests and chi
squared. Results: Implementation of the warm-handoff was successful
with no difference in documentation identified between community
pharmacists and ambulatory care pharmacists. Warm-handoffs resulted
in one additional intervention being identified and on average took
10 minutes to complete. Community pharmacist felt that the
warm-handoff improved patient centered care but found no difference
for provider relationships and person practice. There was not a
significant difference in patients visiting the emergency room,
hospitalization or readmissions with the implementation of the
warm-handoff. Conclusions: These findings support that
warm-handoffs offer a feasible solution to a formalized
bidirectional communication with ambulatory care pharmacists and
community pharmacists that offer potential mutual benefits with
time efficiency and coordination of care compared to standard of
care. Future studies would need to power for additional factors
such as hospitalization to see the impact of this
communication
style on patient hospitalization rates to stand of
care.

The purpose of this literature study is to provide perspectives on communication in conflict and conflict management. The focus is primarily on adults' and children's interactions, with a strong emphasis on teacher - child relationships. The three questions that form the basis of this study is: Where, how, when and why does communication take place according to eight english-language articles? What do eight english-language articles consider about how communication in the form of conversations can promote conflict resolution? and What impact have relationships of conflict and conflict management according to eight english-language articles? The answers to these questions have been found by highlighting eight studies and their results. The research review is intended to give the reader a clearer picture over the importance of communication in conflict and conflict management. The results of this study show that communication in the form of conversations is of great importance to the conflicts and how they are being managed. Other key factors that are of importance, include the significance of relationships, bidirectional influences, reflection, evaluation, and continuity. It has been shown that adults influence children and children affect adults. The bidirectional influence is a highly relevant factor for communication in relationships. Good relationships between children and adults are of importance in how…

▼ The present study examined the divided attention effects of three non-speech tasks on concurrent speech motor performance. These tasks targeted linguistic, cognitive, and manual motor activity. Participants included 60 healthy adults separated into three different age groups of twenty participants each: college-age (20s), middle-aged (40s), and older adults (60s). Each participant completed a speech task once in isolation and once concurrently with each of the three non-speech tasks: a semantic decision task, a quantitative comparison task, and a manual motor task. The non-speech tasks were also performed in isolation. The speech task involved repeating a target phrase each time a beep sounded, for a total of fourteen repetitions. Dependent measures for speech were derived from lip kinematic recordings from a head-mounted strain gauge system. Dependent measures for the other tasks included timed response counts and accuracy rates. Results indicated significant divided attention effects, impacting speech and nonspeech measures in the linguistic and cognitive conditions, and impacting speech measures in the manual motor condition. A significant age effect for utterance duration was also found, as well as a divided attention interaction with age for cognitive task accuracy. The results add to what is known about bidirectional interference between speech and other concurrent tasks, as well as age effects on speech motor control.

The building is an important energy node and an ideal support to develop and analyzethe effects of an Energy Management System (EMS). Because of its potential impact, such amanagement of global energy demand is important. However, to achieve these goals, severallocks must be removed. Beyond issues related to the distribution architecture, to models(including those relating to user behavior), sizing tools, the formalization of…
